Though it bears little resemblance to the original 1969 thriller starring Michael Caine, the 2003 remake of <I>The Italian Job</I> stands on its own as a caper comedy that's well above average. The title's a misnomer--this time it's actually a Los Angeles job--but the action's just as exciting as it propels a breezy tale of honor and dishonor among competing thieves. Inheriting Caine's role as ace heist-planner Charlie Croker, Mark Wahlberg plays straight-man to a well-cast team of accomplices, including Mos Def, Jason Statham, and scene-stealer Seth Green in a variation of the role originally played by Noel Coward. As the daughter of Croker's ill-fated mentor (Donald Sutherland), Charlize Theron is recruited to double-cross a double-crosser (Edward Norton in oily villain mode), and once again, speedily versatile Mini Coopers play a pivotal role in director F. Gary Gray's exhilarating car-chase climax. It's perhaps the greatest product placement in movie history, and just as fun the second time around. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars Good Cast-Good Movie, BRING ON THE SEQUEL!.......2007-06-15

The Italian Job brings to the screen the story of a group of thieves bent on revenge on one of their own who betrayed them by murdering their leader and running off with the gold.
Mark Wahlberg, Donald Sunderland, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron, Seth Green, and the rest of this AMAZING cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are commendable to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few thrills, not to mention a few laughs.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the humor, and the music are all wonderful!
In short, The Italian Job is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

4 out of 5 stars The Italian Review.......2007-06-03

I live right around the corner from a Mini Coop dealership and I'm an Italian-American, so I thought it fitting that I finally rented this movie. It's a remake of the 1969 original starring Michael Caine. Whereas that film took place in Italy, the remake stays there only for the introduction and then swiftly moves to California.

I love heist films. Like Ocean's Eleven or Heat, it's all about the cast. You can see a pattern in the characters:

THE WHEELMAN: This is the guy who mans the getaway vehicle, be it helicopter, jet, or car. Handsome Rob (Jason Statham, my favorite action hero) plays a decidedly scrappy, suave wheelman. This also happens to be almost the exact character from The Transporter. Hopefully, Statham will move beyond this type of character, but it's a testament to action tropes that he can actually be typecast as "the wheelman."

THE TECH: This guy is almost always a nerd and usually the comic relief. Lyle (Seth Green) nails this role and actually steals the show with his jokes. One ad-libbed sequence of Lyle mocking Handsome Rob is the funniest part of the movie. Of course, the challenge with this sort of character is that he needs to be able to pull off seemingly magical feats of technological wizardry without overshadowing the expertise involved. When Lyle manages to take control of the entire traffic system, you really have to wonder if he couldn't be better off striking out on his own. He's almost too good for the movie.

THE DEMOLITIONIST: The demolitionist's job is to blow things up. Sometimes he's a homicidal maniac, other times he's cool and collected. Left Ear (Mos Def) is a cool customer. And he doesn't like dogs. He gives Lyle competition for the funniest line in the movie:

Left Ear: This dude got dogs. I don't do dogs... I had a real bad experience, man.
Charlie Croker: What happened?
Left Ear: I had. A bad. Experience.

THE OLD MAN: You've seen this guy before. He's probably the former leader of the group. He's seen too much, been around the block too many times, and he knows his days are numbered. He just wants one last, big heist so he can retire forever. He almost always dies in the film. That pretty much sums up John Bridger (Donald Sutherland).

THE HOT CHICK: A recent invention, the hot chick's purpose is to keep men interested. She can have a variety of roles (tech, wheel-err-woman, demolitionist). Sometimes she has her own unique set of skills as safecracker. That's John's daughter, Stella (Charlize Theron), who competes admirably in the sea of testosterone.

THE LEADER: Handsome, smart, a safecracker himself, this guy is the one who pulls off a sneaky job right under the bad guys' noses. Unfortunately, Charlie Croker (Mark Wahlberg) is more narrator than anything else. He seems to have very little to do, and that's a shame, because Wahlberg's talented enough to do much more.

The villain is Steve (Edward Norton) a thief turned bad. He knows all of our protagonists' tricks, so he knows how to counter them. And since he stole the gold from the original Italian Job, he's the perfect foil. Norton plays him with just the right amount of shifty-eyed sleaze.

The Italian Job has lots of cool car chases, lots of near misses, and a lot of twists and turns (literally and figuratively) that make it a brisk, entertaining movie. You get quickly caught up in the machinations of the characters, which allows the film to get away with a lot of unbelievable nonsense. But who cares? From the funky flashbacks to the quippy asides, it's clear that Italian Job doesn't take itself too seriously.

Although it's more Job than Italian, the Italian Job is still a fun ride.

4 out of 5 stars Great Caper Film.......2007-05-14

This is a good cast and a fun story, and what I really like about it is not everything they do works for them the first time, so it seems more realistic that way. There's suspense and action and great characters. Theron and Wahlberg play off each other well and are both great actors as is most of the cast. I highly recommend this if you are into the "root for the theif" type of movie. It's one of those movies where everyone's a bad guy and you get to root for the anti-hero. Oh and Edward Norton plays a great bad guy. You really love to hate this jerk.

Nothing unique, but loads of fun.

3 out of 5 stars A F.I.N.E. Movie.......2007-03-14

The Italian Job was fun to watch. It was a good double-cross/revenge story that kept me thoroughly entertained all the way through.

Kudos to Director F. Gary Gray for making such a good feature film when his directorial resume mostly consists of rapper videos. Gray's other most recent notable feature films were 2005's flop sequel to the classic Get Shorty (1995) and 2003's A Man Apart (which I have not seen).

Storywise, The Italian Job really worked well. It had a good flow that kept you interested. There were way too many of the typical over the top Hollywood action film sequences that are just plain old unbelievable: cars driving down busy sidewalks at high speed; driving through a busy subway; people surviving sure-death situations; absolutely zero police response to what would realistically summon a cavalry of cops...these kinds of surreal action take a bit away from the movie.

The cast is pretty good, and the acting is very good. The story is familiar enough as it is popular throughout the history of film: A heist is made by a group of thieves/one of the crooks goes rogue/the group seeks revenge.

So if the genre is up your alley, then by all means The Italian Job should work for an evening of entertainment. And if you like it, you're in luck....A sequel has been announced for 2008 called The Brazilian Job with (mostly) the same cast and director (the most important aspects in a recipe for a successful sequel).

Let's hope in the sequel that Gray keeps a better handle on reality. I'm sure that it'll be F.I.N.E.

4 out of 5 stars steadily satisfying entertainment.......2007-03-11

As a veteran action-flick fan, I found this film very satisfying on all fronts: the plot was believable and coherent, the bad guy was compellingly evil and arrogant; the technology was current and appropriate, the settings - specially Venice - were interesting, the female lead (Theron) was sexy and a nice mix of feminine, seductive, vengeful, and hard-nosed; the main and suppoorting characters were clearly-drawn, human, and interesting, the violence/action scenes were well spaced and paced, And the (classic) ending was predictable and still satisfying. I commend the writers, producer, and director for maintaining a steady level of "What's going to happen next?" suspense throughout the flick. Worth investing in, if you're an action fan!

"I put the grrr in swinger, baby!" a deliciously randy Austin Powers coos near the beginning of <I>The Spy Who Shagged Me</I>, and if the imagination of Austin creator Mike Myers seems to have sagged a bit, his energy surely hasn't. This friendly, go-for-broke sequel to 1997's <I>Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery</I> finds our man Austin heading back to the '60s to keep perennial nemesis Dr. Evil (Myers again) from blowing up the world--and, more importantly, to get back his mojo, that man-juice that turns Austin into irresistible catnip for women, especially American spygirl Felicity Shagwell (a pretty but vacant Heather Graham). The plot may be irreverent and illogical, the jokes may be bad (with characters named Ivana Humpalot and Robin Swallows, née Spitz), and the scenes may run on too long, but it's all delivered sunnily and with tongue firmly in cheek. <P> Myers's true triumph, though, is his turn as the neurotic Dr. Evil, who tends to spout the right cultural reference at exactly the wrong time (referring to his moon base as a "Death Star" with Moon Units Alpha and Zappa--in 1969). Myers teams Dr. Evil with a diminutive clone, Mini-Me (Verne J. Troyer), who soon replaces slacker son Scott Evil (Seth Green) as the apple of the doctor's eye; Myers and Troyer work magic in what could plausibly be one of the year's most affecting (and hysterically funny) love stories. Despite a stellar supporting cast--including a sly Rob Lowe as Robert Wagner's younger self and Mindy Sterling as the forbidding Frau Farbissina--it's basically Myers's show, and he pulls a hat trick by playing a third character, the obese and disgusting Scottish assassin Fat Bastard. Many viewers will reel in disgust at Mr. Bastard's repulsive antics and the scatological bent Myers indulges in, including one showstopper involving coffee and--shudder--a stool sample. Still, Myers's good humor and dead-on cultural references win the day; Austin is one spy who proves he can still shag like a minx. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

4 out of 5 stars A bit too much at times.......2006-07-25

This is what happens when you get a film that does modest business, but becomes a huge cult sensation once it hits the home audience. You make everything bigger and better and hope the audience eats it up without noticing how empty the film feels at times. Ironically this was also one of the principle flaws of the James Bond series, which Austin Powers chiefly parodies.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me lacks the heart of the first film. That may seem like an odd comment for a comedy film like this, but it was really the character-driven bits in the first one (and the third) that kept the comedy bits together. Here the plot feels kinda random and disorganized. There are defnitely some new concepts and gags (Mini-Me!), but a lot also feel recycled. The gags are also a little much this time around, even for someone used to this kind of bathroom humour. I found the gags in the first and third much more clever and entertaining.

So we get a 3 star film, which has flaws but is generally a nice reunion of old characters. The dvd however, presents a lot of great extras that boost the final rating to 4. Lots of hilarious deleted scenes, a great commentary track, music videos, and other fun extras. A lot of care was put into this set and it shows.

The weak link of the Austin Powers trilogy, but worth owning for fans, and worth a rental for those who haven't experienced Austin Powers yet.

5 out of 5 stars Hop on the good foot and do the bad thing.......2006-07-09

Austin Powers (AKA "Sir Austin Danger Powers"), Dr Evil and Fat [...] all played by Mike Myers? Fantastic! The costume and make-up team are second to none.

Verne Troyer as Mini me is great. Not that many other actors could have "filled his shoes". Danny Devito doesn't even come close!

Ivana Humpalot (Kristen Johnston) is a Russian woman sent to kill our hero. As a chess fan I was curious about the direction of this particular game.

Overall, this film is a comedy. You can't expect a Les Miserables plot or the depth of Ben Hur. It's a great laugh for a night in and it achieves what I believe it set out to do.

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Evil's movie.......2006-06-21

This sequal to the first austin powers is not quite as good as the first one, but it's not that bad. Austin power's character has pretty much been reduced to nothing in this movie. Heather Graham's character is just in the movie for eye candy. That leaves Dr. Evil, who pretty much has all of the funny scene's in the movie. Although, I thought the whole thing with him trying to be a rapper was stupid. Fat Bastard's character was ok, but it got dull after a while. Overall: I think you should check it out just for dr. evil's scenes in the movie.

4 out of 5 stars AUSTIN POWERS IS BADDER THAN EVER AND HE'S BACK.......2006-05-08

THE RETURN OF AUSTIN POWERS

STILL A FACETIOUS IRREVERENT LIGHT- HEARTED SATIRE & VERY FUNNY TOO!

IN A NUTSHELL: STILL A BIT TOO MUCH - BUT SO WHAT IF IT WORKS!

Still a bit too facetious, a bit too vulgar, a bit too irreverent, and a bit too overdone. Only now, everything, including Austin's new nemesis FB [also played by Mike Meyers] is supersized. Nevertheless, this comedy still does work and it still pays homage to the original James Bond series, as well as the anglo and american cultures of the 1960s. In the end, "Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me" is still simply quite effective in its role as a satirical comedy.

HOWEVER THERE ARE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE 1st & 2nd FILMS:

The tone of the film is the same, but more. In doing so, the film has had to rely more on comical set-pieces than the natural progression of a silly satirical story line, as it did in the original film. At times this slows things down or seems to detour the film almost to the point of derailing. Almost, however, is the key word and the film keeps on trucking. Some of these comedic set-pieces are self-contained entertainment in their own right, such as Dr. Evil's duet ["Just The Two Of Us"] with Mini Me, and the commotion in the tent where strange things seemed to be happening within Austin's innards, as seen from outside the tent by Dr. Evil's disgusted henchmen. Or that whole story line involving group family therapy which spilled over to the "Jerry Springer Show" - very effectively silly, irreverent stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Great Sequel.......2006-01-24

When it appeared in theatres back in summer '99, I thought this is one of the good sequels that was just as good as before. Vanessa Shagme and Fat Bastard were both a plus to this new movie. Doctor Evil and Austin Powers still act the same, and still make me laugh. Michel Meyers didn't loose with this one. The story line made sense (unlike the one after this one)and it was one enjoyable movie. I recommend that you get this one, because it will make you laugh.

4 out of 5 stars Classic 80s Movie.......2007-05-05

Standard unpopular boy dates popular girl to become popular. This is a classic from the 80s and I still enjoy it today. It's even fun to laugh at what we used to wear and what our hair looked like back then. Story line is very good and the acting is good for a group of teenagers, the adults were actually the bad ones in this film.

3 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD TEEN HIGH SCHOOL COMEDY FULLSCREEN DVD BUMMER!.......2007-04-10

This is another good teen comedy from the 80'. It's a shame that the DVD release is fullscreen. This movie deserves a deluxe DVD treatment.

4 out of 5 stars Good Comedy : reviewers here miss the mark.......2007-03-25

This was filmed in the 80's but other than some of the fashions you'd never really know it and that are where I think reviewers here miss the mark. This is not a "typical 80's teen comedy" in the way that phrase is generally understood. There are no references to pop culture (movies or music) in this film at all. Many of the songs used in the film are either not from the 80's or, with the exception of the Billy Idol song used, obscure pop tunes. The soundtrack to this movie is barely noticeable.

There are no decade defining actors or actresses in this film either. No Anthony Michael Hall no Molly Ringwald et al. Other than Patrick Dempsey in "Loverboy" I don't remember any of the people in this film in anything else during the 80's. This movie should never be lumped into the "Sixteen Candles/Breakfast Club/Pretty in Pink" trilogy of sorts. It's a much different type of movie the most obvious reason being John Hughes did not direct or produce this film.

I originally saw this movie in 1988 on VHS while I was a freshman in HS. The plot of this movie could easily be set in 1967, 1977, 1997 or 2007. I may be mistaken but I don't think cliques in High School were an 80's phenomenon that disappeared after 1989. As far as I know there are still jocks, nerds, and being "cool" in HS is still and always will be defined by who you hang out with.

This movie used the still annoying habit of trying to cast 23 year olds as high school students. Most of it is obvious but amazingly enough Amanda Peterson, the prettiest girl in school, was really 16 at the time. Perhaps that is what makes the movie more enjoyable. If you are looking to watch a teenaged HS comedy that most of us can relate to on one level or another you might like this. If you want to watch a "decade defining 80's movie" you should look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars 80's fun.......2007-03-24

This is a typical 80's romantic comedy. It is very formulaic yet it still manages to be fun. I love looking back on these films because I grew up with these movies, clothes, songs, and culture.

If you love the 80s then you should see this movie. It is better than several other options. However, it is not the best option. I think "Say Anything" is my favorite. I am partial to John Cusack.

The acting, story, and overall feel of the movie is fine. One of the other reviewers mentioned that some actors went on to huge careers and it shows in some scenes. However, some show their inexperience.

So if you love the 80s you should see this film; if not rent "Say Anything" because every one should see this movie once.

5 out of 5 stars good oldie.......2007-03-09

This movie is an older movie but still has a lot of charm. It is great to see Seth Green and Patrick Dempsey when they were kids. It has a lot of laughs and sincere moments in it. a must see!

Product Description

In this exclusive 83 minute DVD premiere, featuring brand new, never before seen content, Stewie, the maniacal baby genius, is distracted from his plans for world domination when he sees a man who looks just like him on television. Convinced that this man must be his real father (after all, how could he possibly share genetic material with the dimwitted Peter?), Stewie sets off on a cross-country road trip to find him. But his incredible journey leads him to discoveries far more vile and shocking that anything found in his diaper.

For Family Guy fans, there are no freakin' sweeter words than "Never Before Seen." A triumphant homecoming for the Griffins, <I>Stewie Griffin</I> is not so much a movie as it is a not-yet-aired three-episode story arc enhanced with a home-video-exclusive "red carpet premiere" prologue and an epilogue (capped, of course, with a fart joke). Family Guy's resurrection is a television miracle, and its creators have rewarded the faithful by picking up right where they left off, offending any and all sensibilities (recasting Jesus as comic magician Art Metrano), dissing the celebrity disenfranchised (Ellen Cleghorne references, anyone?), and generally taking potshots at anyone on their enemies list (Stewie breaks the neck of a reporter for Entertainment Weekly, the magazine that once called Family Guy "the Awful Show They Just Keep Putting on the Air"). The Untold Story! is a star vehicle for Family Guy 's breakout character, in which the mega maniacal and matricidal infant has a Grinch-like change of heart after a near-death experience (and a disturbing encounter with Steve Allen in Hell) and, more life-altering, discovers a football-pated man who could be his father (the truth is more shocking!). As go the gags, so goes Family Guy, and there are enough good ones here to compensate for the many misfires. The Miller-esque (as in Dennis) penchant for channeling arcane pop culture can grow tiresome. But for those who do remember the words to the Who's the Boss theme song, know (or still care) who Steve Bartman is, and are always up for "a sexy party," this will be the greatest story ever untold. --Donald Liebenson

5 out of 5 stars Does this really need a review?.......2007-05-10

A great feature presentation of arguably the best comedy animation series ever made.

5 out of 5 stars The good, the bad and the hilarious .......2007-05-04

"Stewie Griffin - The Untold Story" is a big, colorful and tasty collection of everything we love about Family Guy (and I mean, certainly, open-mindness... and fart jokes). Don't miss nearly 90 minutes of insane Family Guy laughs, all combined in this work of genius. Join Stewie in his time-travel to the future, watch Cris grow even more fatter and Meg become a guy, and Stew himself - a 30 year old virgin.

3 out of 5 stars Yawn........2007-05-02

Honestly, I only bought this because I heard that a David Bowie character appeared in it. When I actually watched it, I was saddened to see that it was just a few Family Guy episodes (rather boring ones, to tell the truth) that I had already seen strung together. I wouldn't say it's worth 20 bucks, but if you feel the need to watch this and you're a big Family Guy fan, go ahead, if you must...

3 out of 5 stars Family Guy: The Movie Review .......2007-03-13

I saw separate pecies of this movie on TV and I must say that I am somewhat impressed. There are laughs and misses on this movie. I enjoyed most of the movie except the flashbacks and other off topic sequences. Some of them are funny at first and then get annoying. I wish I would have watched the movie on its DVD because I bet there were things on it that TV wouldn't show. So I guess if people are going to see this movie on TV I would read this review, but if you're going to rent it or buy it, I would rather read another one.

5 out of 5 stars Too funny...Stewie is my favorite .......2007-03-09

Forgot about the Simpsons...Family guy is so funny and this dvd will crack you up. I caught myself saying "oh wow did they really say that?"...through out the entire thing. Definately recommend this one.

Despite symptoms of sequelitis, <I>Austin Powers in Goldmember</I> is must-see lunacy for devoted fans of the shagadelic franchise. Unfortunately, the law of diminishing returns is in full effect: for every big-name cameo and raunchy double-entendre, there's an equal share of redundant shtick, juvenile scatology, and pop-cultural spoofery. All is forgiven when the hilarity level is consistently high, and Mike Myers--returning here as randy Brit spy Austin, his nemesis Dr. Evil, the bloated Scottish henchman Fat Bastard, and new Dutch disco-villain Goldmember--thrives by favoring comedic chaos over coherent plotting. Once they've tossed Austin into the disco fever of 1975 (where he's sent to rescue his father, gamely played by Michael Caine), Myers and director Jay Roach seem vaguely adrift with old and new characters, including Verne Troyer's Mini-Me and pop star Beyoncé Knowles as Pam Grier-ish blaxpo-babe Foxxy Cleopatra. A bit tired, perhaps, but Powers hasn't lost his mojo. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars Pretty funny, but not as funny as Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me.......2006-07-03

Austin Powers in GOLDMEMBER

Not a bad movie at all. Pretty funny, but not as funny as Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

Should've given more dialog to Foxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles from Destiny's Child); instead, she's just the next girlfriend for Austin, and not a more fleshed-out character, like Heather Graham or Elizabeth Hurley before her.

The character of Goldmember, while not in the film a lot, could've been cut down a bit more. He isn't particlularly interesting. He's not as evil as Dr. Evil, and not as disgusting as Fat [...], and comes off as a washed out amalgam of the two.

Fred Savage, from TV's "The Wonder Years," is good in his two scenes as "the Mole." It's Dr. Evil, as usual, who steals the show, however. And it's a pretty good show.

F.Y.I.: While in the movie we hear ELO's "Evil Woman," King Floyd's funk classic "Groove Me," and Bobby Darin's "Beyond the Sea," Darin's song is not on the soundtrack, and absolutely awful cover versions of the first two make the album. Avoid this soundtrack at all costs!

3 out of 5 stars It has its moments.......2006-06-21

I'm a big fan of the first 2, but this one just seemed unnecessary. Most of the jokes in this one are recycled from the 2nd one and other jokes were just stupid. The only funny moments came mostly with scenes that had dr evil in them and the "mole" scenes were pretty funny to. But, even some of the scenes with dr evil were kinda stupid. The opening credits thing was really stupid to, it just went too far with the cameos. I really only bought this one cause it was like 5 bucks at compusa. Overall: If you've seen the first two, just stick with those cause you won't be getting anything new from this one.

3 out of 5 stars Oscars 0 stars, funnywise 5 stars.......2006-06-21

Austin Powers, back again for Goldmember. As usual, with half the characters played by Mike Myers, nothing is really out of the ordinary. Dr. Evil and his clone, Mini Me go back to 1975 to find Goldmember, a lover of gold trying to take over the world. When Austin goes back, he find sexy Foxy Cleopatra (Beyonce Knowles)and they work together to find Dr. Evil and Goldmember. In the meanwhile, Austin's father, Nigel Powers gets kidnapped by Goldmember and Austin saves him.

The biggest problem of the movie is that Beyonce can't act. Her punchline is "Shazzam". The movie is extremely funny, but no serious people would want to see it. If you came for a James Bond movie, you are in the wrong place. If you are looking for a few good laughs, Goldmember is for you.

If you don't think <I>Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery</I> (1997) is one of the funniest movies of the 1990s, maybe you should be packed into a cryogenic time chamber and sent back to the decade whence you came. Perhaps it was the 1960s--the shagadelic decade when London hipster Austin Powers scored with gorgeous chicks as a fashion photographer by day, crime-fighting international man of mystery by night. Yeah, baby, yeah! But when Powers's arch nemesis, Dr. Evil, puts himself into a deep-freeze and travels via time machine to the late 1990s, Powers must follow him and foil Evil's nefarious scheme of global domination. Mike Myers plays dual roles as Powers and Dr. Evil, with Elizabeth Hurley as his present-day sidekick and karate-kicking paramour. A hilarious spoof of '60s spy movies, this colorful comedy actually gets funnier with successive viewings, making it a perfect home video for gloomy days and randy nights. Oh, behave!

"I put the grrr in swinger, baby!" a deliciously randy Powers coos near the beginning of <I>The Spy Who Shagged Me</I> (1999), and if the imagination of Austin creator Mike Myers seems to have sagged a bit, his energy surely hasn't. This friendly, go-for-broke sequel finds our man Austin heading back to the '60s to keep perennial nemesis Dr. Evil (Myers again) from blowing up the world--and, more importantly, to get back his mojo, that man-juice that turns Austin into irresistible catnip for women, especially American spygirl Felicity Shagwell (a pretty but vacant Heather Graham). The plot may be irreverent and illogical, the jokes may be bad, and the scenes may run on too long, but it's all delivered sunnily and with tongue firmly in cheek. Myers teams Dr. Evil with a diminutive clone, Mini-Me (Verne J. Troyer), then pulls a hat trick by playing a third character, the obese and disgusting Scottish assassin Fat Bastard.

Despite symptoms of sequelitis, <I>Austin Powers in Goldmember</I> (2002) is must-see lunacy for devoted fans of the shagadelic franchise. Unfortunately, the law of diminishing returns is in full effect: for every big-name cameo and raunchy double-entendre, there's an equal share of redundant shtick, juvenile scatology, and pop-cultural spoofery. A bit tired, perhaps, but Powers hasn't lost his mojo.

I am a fan of all Michael Myers movies. I loved the first two movies of series and am going too buy them soon! Too bad I can't say the same for the third one. The first "Austin Powers" movie is funny and not too crude (4 stars). The second one is funny, but is a little more crude (3 stars) and the third one is nothing but fart jokes (2 stars). If people agree wiht me, don't buy this whole entire series, just buy the first two. If you are a die hard fan, buy the whole pack.

I love this movie, I had it on DVD and I got it on HD DVD recently. My only gripe is the quality of the video transfer. There is a lot of graining and artifact noise, especially on dark scenes. The blacks on the DVD version look better than the HD DVD version's blacks...

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite comedies.......2007-04-07

I Love owning this film because its one of those silly comedies that just gets funnier to me with each watching. just the anticipation of some of the jokes about to happen can make me laugh. Its like an old friend that you share so many private jokes with.you begin to giggle before its even said, even the really stupidest and corny of the lines. Dr. Evil is just so classic and probably my favorite of all of Myers characters.

Anyway, I think its worth letting it grow on you and watching again every few weeks.

whenever I might need a lift I know I can pop this movie in and its got me smiling again .

5 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy -- But Don't Waste Your Time with the Sequels.......2007-04-02

I actually saw "The Spy Who Shagged Me" first, and was mostly bored throughout. There were maybe two funny scenes. I thought to myself, why do people seem to love "Austin Powers" so much? This was pretty lame.

Several months later I caught bits and pieces of the original ("International Man of Mystery") on TV, and found myself laughing at almost every scene! This is why people loved "Austin Powers"! Eventually I'd seen enough to know I needed to own the movie. I bought it on VHS about 5 years ago, and just got the DVD today. It is an absolute classic. I have to rate it among the best comedies of all time. If you haven't seen it yet, you just don't know what you're missing. It is extremely well-written, clever, witty, and with great delivery and timing.

Now, a warning. It is my opinion that the two sequels to this movie amount to a pile of crap. They are cliché, unoriginal, lame movies. If you like the first one, there is absolutely no guarantee you will like the second or third installments. I would recommend you not waste your time with them, period. I personally just try to pretend they don't even exist. That allows me to continue to love "Austin Powers."

5 out of 5 stars Austin Powers, Man of Mystery Indeed!.......2006-11-10

What a film, brilliantly executed, the gags all reach without dragging on. Mike Meyers has done a good job with the script and characterizations as I really haven't laughed this hard in a while--probably since 'Mars Attacks'.

He manages to spoof 'Bond' films tastefully with a comics' aplomb. I fear however, that the mainstream Tom Cruise/Julia Roberts type of fan will miss the point on this one though.

5 out of 5 stars Give your undercarriage a little bit of a "How's your father?".......2006-11-06

The first Austin Powers flick is still funny today, despite several catchphrases ("Do I make you horny, baby?", "Oh, behave!", etc.) having long since worn out their welcome and a duo of redundant, unimaginative sequels. There are two primary reasons why this movie is comic gold:

1. It's the best James Bond spoof you'll ever see. (You can take my word for it: I'm a HUGE 007 fan.)

2. The dialogue crackles with wit and is delivered flawlessly by the cast.

For reference, check out the scene where Dr. Evil struggles to come up with a contemporary scheme that *hasn't* already happened: "Oh, hell. Let's just do what we always do: hijack some nuclear weapons and hold the world hostage."

Or how about when Austin tries to live dangerously by staying at five while playing Blackjack with Number Two. "I SUGGEST you hit, sir!"

Yes, the movie plays to the adolescent crowd sometimes by throwing in a bunch of sex-related jokes, but at least they're clever and often howlingly funny (especially the Swiss-made penis enlarger bit). To the film's credit, there are no gags that go on for too long and the script is very economical.

Very few comedies have a killer-to-filler ratio as high as the first Austin Powers. Buy this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars FACETIOUS IRREVERENT LIGHT- HEARTED SATIRE & VERY FUNNY TOO!.......2006-05-08

IN A NUTSHELL: A BIT TOO MUCH - BUT SO WHAT IF IT WORKS!

A bit too facetious, a bit too vulgar, a bit too irreverent, and a bit too overdone. Nevertheless, this comedy does work and it pays homage to the original James Bond series, as well as the anglo and american cultures of the 1960s. In the end, "Austin Powers - International Man of Mystery" is simply quite effective in its role as a satirical comedy.

Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on <I>The Daily Show</I> and in movies like <I>Bruce Almighty</I> and <I>Anchorman</I>--leaps into leading man status with <I>The 40 Year-Old Virgin</I>. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humor and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (<I>Clueless</I>, <I>The Shape of Things</I>) and Jane Lynch (<I>Best in Show</I>, <I>A Mighty Wind</I>), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (<I>Lovely & Amazing</I>, <I>Being John Malkovich</I>). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

1 out of 5 stars Horrible piece of you know what.......2007-06-17

Terrible terrible movie. Not funny in the least. I heard so much buzz about how this was the funniest thing ever so I made the mistake of watching this on TV. My God what a horrible movie. Not funny at all. I guess people now a days have no idea what a good comedy is.

5 out of 5 stars R-rated Widescreen...Finally Available.......2007-06-15

After more than a year since its DVD release, "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" is finally available in all of its R-rated glory in widescreen format!

For those unfamiliar with the unrated version, it was the exclusive widescreen version available up until now, and included 17 additional minutes of "outrageous" deleted scenes that were left on the cutting room floor for good reason. The R-rated version is a comedic gem, and has finally gotten its due with this widescreen DVD release.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites!!!.......2007-06-10

This is one of the best comedies of all time!! I've watched it 25-30 times! The unrated DVD has some really great deleted scenes that are must-sees!!

2 out of 5 stars Where's the FUNNY version?.......2007-06-05

I've only seen 40 Year Old Virgin on video, and I've been kicking myself in the nads ever since I realized that waiting out the theatrical release becuase "it'd be just as good on video" was a huge mistake. I'll neve know if this movie was originally good or not. The bloated, formless version we have on DVD has some great parts, but they're buried in cut bits that should never have been put back in. I mean, they could have put out a longer version for hard core fans, but gee whillakers--put out the version that was a big hit in theatres too! When I watched the DVD the fat and repetition was just painfully obvious; there was no forward momentum and jokes repeated themselves.

PLEASE release the original theatrical version!

4 out of 5 stars Hysterically Funny!.......2007-06-05

What a funny movie! It has no special meaning or deep thinking involved, just a normal single guy with one little hang-up - he's never had sex with a woman.

If you have the sense of humor required for a flick like this, you will love it and laugh heartily. The main character is a total goofball, and with the help of his buddies gets himself into some of the most precarious situations.

When he does meet a woman, (Catherine Keener), there are a plethora of trials and tribulations this poor guys gets himself into. Most of the characters have their own little quirks, but she is a refreshing addition to the story - she is friendly, intelligent and pretty.

Great light-hearted movie with a large splash of screwball comedy.

    3 out of 5 stars Ultra Dark.......2007-06-23

This was a brilliant, dark, and disturbing series. While as a fan I was very disappointed this show only lasted one season. From an objective perspective I'm surprised it actually ever saw the light of day at all, on CBS no less. That to me shows just good this controversial show was. Gary Cole as always was fantastic as the malevolent Sheriff Lucas Buck. I expect no less from him. The surprise to me was the acting of a young Lucas Black. He brought a depth and range to character Caleb Temple. He could ably portray Caleb as just a normal kid, enjoying the activities any 10 year old would enjoy. Also the intense melancholy to a boy that has so much inner pain and turmoil for the loss of sister Merlyn. When young Lucas Black has to act dark, he becomes one scary young lad. I wonder why he hasn't had more prominent acting roles nowadays. It is not often I am impressed with child actors, but his performance really left a mark on me, even a decade later. This was one of my all time favorite TV shows.
So why only three stars for a five star series? Well as others have stated DVD compilation was horribly mishandled. What with the episodes out of order. The source material wasn't remastered in anyway. That is unforgivable in this high def world we now live in. Also double-sided discs are the worst. I had no problems with any kind of skipping or freezing, as is commonplace with some double-sided DVDs. But it shows to me how Universal cut costs any way they could in bringing this series to DVD.
Do not let those drawbacks dissuade you from checking out a groundbreaking, excellent series. If you, the potential customer, can look past these flaws, I guarantee you this will be a show that will stick in your mind long after you are done viewing.

5 out of 5 stars How could they get these episodes out of order?.......2007-05-27

American Gothic is a fantastic timeless mysterious series. I am very happy to find it available on DVD. However, how on earth could these disks have been put together is such a sloppy manner? The episodes are out of order. I surely recommended boxed set this because it is the only way you will get the series, but do not watch the progams in the order on the three disks. If you read a few of the other reviews you will find the correct order. Love Gary Cole in this role!

5 out of 5 stars AMERICAN GOTHIC ROCKED !!!.......2007-05-14

Fantastic cast... from Gary Cole to Lucas Black & everyone in between. Too bad Shawn Cassidy didn't pitch this series to HBO instead of the networks... it might have actually gotten its run for the money. The series was moved around... episodes shown out of order.... sometimes pre-empted for weeks at a time... even the loyalist of fans had trouble finding it from week to week (especially since it aired back in those pre-Tivo days). It's also sad that when it finally made it to DVD they did the same hatchet job on the episode order as the network did when it first ran the series. Thanks to everyone out there who gave us lists showing the correct order to view the episodes even if it does mean going from disk to disk/side to side just to see them in the correct sequence. As for quality... the picture is sometimes grainy & the scene endings where commercial breaks were to be inserted are painfully obvious... but having said all that... and even though you can catch it right now on the Chiller network if you have DirecTV like we do... it was fun to do a weekend marathon of the entire series in the correct episode order & without commercial interuptions.

For me it was well worth the buy... but of course the series ended too soon and you're left wanting more... after all... the battle for Caleb's soul was just getting interesting....

    5 out of 5 stars American Gothic = a fun creative series.......2007-05-09

Blink and you could have missed it as a series from network television but fortunately for those who love story telling with a supernatural bend American Gothic is back as a ongoing series on Chiller as well as this DVD series. Complete and fun the DVD set doesn't disappoint. And now the cult following for Sheriff Lucas Buck can always be assured that this Andy of Mayberry from another dimension and his little town and inhabitants are as close as your DVD player.

5 out of 5 stars Good vs Evil.......2007-04-01

American Gothic, was one of televisions most interesting and original broadcasts in many, many years. The show takes place in South Carolina, in a town called Trinity. The name Trinity says it all. it is a constant struggle between good and evil. Lucas Black, who plays that character of a little boy is so adorable. His southern accent is to die for. What a remarkable cast as well. This horror/drama/thriller is an excellent way to take a look at the real world and see what is really going on under the facaud of our perception of what is good and what is evil and what is real and what is imagined. Amercian Gothic takes you on a trip of self exploration and soul searching. This show really makes you question yourself and your values.
