Customer Reviews:
Classic 80s Movie.......2007-05-05
Standard unpopular boy dates popular girl to become popular. This is a classic from the 80s and I still enjoy it today. It's even fun to laugh at what we used to wear and what our hair looked like back then. Story line is very good and the acting is good for a group of teenagers, the adults were actually the bad ones in this film.
VERY GOOD TEEN HIGH SCHOOL COMEDY FULLSCREEN DVD BUMMER!.......2007-04-10
This is another good teen comedy from the 80'. It's a shame that the DVD release is fullscreen. This movie deserves a deluxe DVD treatment.
Good Comedy : reviewers here miss the mark.......2007-03-25
This was filmed in the 80's but other than some of the fashions you'd never really know it and that are where I think reviewers here miss the mark. This is not a "typical 80's teen comedy" in the way that phrase is generally understood. There are no references to pop culture (movies or music) in this film at all. Many of the songs used in the film are either not from the 80's or, with the exception of the Billy Idol song used, obscure pop tunes. The soundtrack to this movie is barely noticeable.
There are no decade defining actors or actresses in this film either. No Anthony Michael Hall no Molly Ringwald et al. Other than Patrick Dempsey in "Loverboy" I don't remember any of the people in this film in anything else during the 80's. This movie should never be lumped into the "Sixteen Candles/Breakfast Club/Pretty in Pink" trilogy of sorts. It's a much different type of movie the most obvious reason being John Hughes did not direct or produce this film.
I originally saw this movie in 1988 on VHS while I was a freshman in HS. The plot of this movie could easily be set in 1967, 1977, 1997 or 2007. I may be mistaken but I don't think cliques in High School were an 80's phenomenon that disappeared after 1989. As far as I know there are still jocks, nerds, and being "cool" in HS is still and always will be defined by who you hang out with.
This movie used the still annoying habit of trying to cast 23 year olds as high school students. Most of it is obvious but amazingly enough Amanda Peterson, the prettiest girl in school, was really 16 at the time. Perhaps that is what makes the movie more enjoyable. If you are looking to watch a teenaged HS comedy that most of us can relate to on one level or another you might like this. If you want to watch a "decade defining 80's movie" you should look elsewhere.
80's fun.......2007-03-24
This is a typical 80's romantic comedy. It is very formulaic yet it still manages to be fun. I love looking back on these films because I grew up with these movies, clothes, songs, and culture.
If you love the 80s then you should see this movie. It is better than several other options. However, it is not the best option. I think "Say Anything" is my favorite. I am partial to John Cusack.
The acting, story, and overall feel of the movie is fine. One of the other reviewers mentioned that some actors went on to huge careers and it shows in some scenes. However, some show their inexperience.
So if you love the 80s you should see this film; if not rent "Say Anything" because every one should see this movie once.
good oldie.......2007-03-09
This movie is an older movie but still has a lot of charm. It is great to see Seth Green and Patrick Dempsey when they were kids. It has a lot of laughs and sincere moments in it. a must see!

Description
Nice guy accountant Robbie lives an idyllic life with his partner Trey in a quiet suburban neighborhood. But when a venomous neighbor moves in and starts harassing them, hate sparks violence. Recipient of the Best Feature Award at the Outtakes Dallas and Sedona International film festivals, Hate Crime features a brilliant cast including Seth Peterson (Providence) as Robbie, Lin Shaye (Snakes On A Plane, There's Something About Mary) and Golden Globe winners Susan Blakely (The Towering Inferno, Rich Man, Poor Man) and Bruce Davison (Longtime Companion). A provocative thriller, Hate Crime delves deep into intolerance, challenging audiences to question their own prejudices as they witness the heartbreaking consequences of hate and a family's painful quest for retribution.
Customer Reviews:
A Little Too Pat.......2007-06-13
This movie may be a little too pat a morality play about homophobia. The haters appear to be too one-dimensionally villainous; and the hated appear to be too one-dimensionally admirable. There is even a lovable pet thrown into the mix to wring our hearts on cue. And tragedy strikes with a predictable knell.
However, the plot takes an interesting turn or two. There is some suspense and some detective work involved. And the movie does bring home the lesson that no good can come of blind hatred.
Overall, this is a worthwhile film.
Required viewing for all.......2007-02-12
Robbie and Trey live a peaceful suburban life, well known and respected by all. That idyllic picture quickly changes, however, with the arrival of an inhospitable new neighbor. Christopher Boyd, son of the local fundamentalist pastor, immediately goes out of his way to vehemently demean the two men and warns Robbie to watch his back because he's "going to hell." Following a viciously unprovoked attack that leaves Trey lying comatose in a hospital bed, Robbie endeavors to fill the unbearable void left in his life and seek justice.
Director Tommy Stovall has crafted a bold, hard-hitting slice of reality. Any one person who, upon watching "Hate Crime," can still come away quoting it as a "cheap jab at religion" that promotes the so-called "Gay Agenda" is plain and simply beyond hope. Prejudice is prejudice, no matter how you choose to approach it. The fact that some members of society still choose to justify blatant acts of violence as "God's will" represents the sole reason I feel this outstanding film should be required viewing.
This has everything. Tight scripting, fine acting by a strong cast of professionals, and an unflinching look at the heart-wrenching pain intolerance can breed. My spouse and I were both extremely moved and impressed with what Mr. Stovall brought to the table. "Hate Crime" deserves all the praise it has received and has definitely earned a spot in our collection. It is, in every conceivable manner, a true eye-opener that shouldn't be missed.
Love, Intolerance, Justice.......2007-02-04
Tommy Stovall makes a stunning debut as a writer and director for the very insightful, sensitive, and courageous film HATE CRIME. It is difficult to believe that this is his first attempt at cinematic communication, the film just works that well.
Robbie Levinson (Seth Peterson) and Trey McCoy (Brian J. Smith) have been in a successful relationship for six years, complete with home, cute and devoted dog, supportive parents and siblings, and especially funky supportive neighbor Kathleen Slansky (a major turn for veteran character actress Lin Shaye). They are approaching their commitment ceremony and even talking about adopting children when the sky darkens with the moving in of next door neighbor Chris Boyd (Chad Donella), a stormy right wing bible-thumping homophobe who catches a glimpse of Robbie's and Trey's affection. When Trey is walking their dog in the park one evening he is beaten severely with a baseball bat: the obvious suspect is neighbor Chris.
Kathleen warns Robbie that justice will never be achieved in the hands of the law and sets of a sense of revenge in Robbie's mind. Trey lies in a coma in the hospital while his mother (a superb Cindy Pickett) is shaken not only form her only son's tenuous condition but also from her recovering alcoholic husband's (Sean Hennigan) flat affect and continued lack of communication. A fine young detective Elizabeth Fisher (Farah White) does what she can to attempt to gather the shaky facts of evidence of Chris' guilt, but is thwarted by the entry of Detective Esposito (Giancarlo Esposito) who has homophobic issues of his own.
Chris' father, Pastor Boyd (Bruce Davison) rants from his pulpit that all sinners - especially fornicators - must be punished by God and Chris supports his father's preachings and actions, as does his beautiful bimbo mother Martha (Susan Blakely). As facts are found and everyone surrounding Trey's beating is suspect, the story gathers momentum in the true fashion of the best detective mysteries. Dark secrets appear from every corner and eventually the crime is 'resolved', but not without many surprises as to the perpetrator and the motivation.
The entire cast is excellent from the leading roles to the cameos and Stovall keeps the pace at a breathtaking speed. Yes, there are some gaping holes in the script, giving us the feeling that Stovall had to pare down his story to the 104 minutes it takes. But what he does accomplish is a masterly look at strident right wing religious views of gays while balancing those with compassionate religious views by the more moderate and love-oriented factions. He raises a lot of issues, leaves many concepts unresolved intentionally, and draws performances from his committed cast that rank with the finest. This is a film that SHOULD be viewed by a wide audience. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, February 07
Powerful film shows hate and violence breeds more of the same. .......2007-01-21
Robbie Levinson and Trey McCoy are your stereotypically-successful suburban "guppie" (Gay urban professional) couple, until Trey becomes the victim of a violent "Hate Crime" (2005). The likely suspect is tehir new bible-thumping neighbor, son of the local fundamentalist preacher, who had recently made anti-gay taunts against them, and has a history of homophobic acts. Robbie cannot believe that the police refuse to just arrest him based on the recent verbal bashing and implied threat, and works with friends to try to push the police into action.
A relatively low-budget indie first film by writer/producer/director Tommy Stovall, who managed to attract a mostly-experienced cast of actors who made the rather simplistic screenplay seem a lot better than it really is. Bruce Davidson is riveting as the fundamentalist preacher, and Seth Peterson shows considerable range as Robbie. The musical score is also impressive, including several new songs by writer/artist Ebony Tay. Personally, I was a bit turned off by the "Fight violence and hate with more violence and hate" message conveyed, though it could be commendable that it illustrates that gay men are not content to simply be victims. Overall, I give it four stars out of five.
Ahh sweet revenge!.......2007-01-12
This movie is very touching. It shows a couple who are basically just normal folks living their lives, They are interesting and complex characters who feel like people you know who truly love each other, but there's a twist. They're gay.
I'm straight, but this couple reminds me of gay couples I actually know. They would never be cast on "Queer Eye .." or "Will and Grace" or whatever. They're not "flame-boyant" or outlandish. They're just people living their lives and trying to get a long in the world. Anyway, in the film they have conflict w/ their neighbors and some really bad stuff happens. Then you get to see how normal people react in extreme circumstance. The best thing about the story is that their reactions are NOT what you'd predict and everyone I know who's seen the movie agrees. To be fair, I should mention that I have a small part in the flick, but I have shown it to many people and know many who saw it in the theatres or on their TV. Everyone agrees that it is interesting to see a much more natural depiction of an alternative couple and that the story is a wild, unpredictable ride.
I highly recommend it for people sick of the same old stereotypical flick. Enjoy!

Description
Uneasy Allies Track Down an Escaped Killer OSCAR(r) nominees Burt Reynolds (Boogie Nights) and Bruce Dern (Coming Home) star in a tense Western about the uneasy alliance between a convict and a Territorial Marshal. Billy Bucklin (David Figlioli) busts out en route to Yuma Prison, so Marshal Hutchinson (Dern) has his brother-in-law, John McKay (Reynolds), released to help bring him down. Hutch offers a possible pardon for the killing McKay claims was in self-defense, and also reveals that his deputy, John's son Joshua (Seth Peterson), is tracking the dangerous man. Elizabeth Kennedy (Amy Jo Johnson) is saved from Bucklin's henchmen after her family is massacred, and doggedly joins the three searchers as they try to get him-dead or alive.
Customer Reviews:
Great actors in a made-for-TV mediocrity.......2005-08-13
First, I love Bruce Dern and Burt Reynolds. I could watch them just sit around and talk, and in fact those scenes are the best part of the movie. Hard Ground is a very predictable western with very predictable special effects (how many dynamite blow-ups in slow motion with people flying have you seen lately?)
The young female survivor of a stage coach massacre has got "sand" and alternates between being feisty and vulnerable on a very predictable basis. The estranged son of Burt is also heroic but oversleeps on the trail of the bad guys. The two veterans and the two young people pull together in the end to a very predictable climactic shoot-em-up with a very predictable outcome. Have I said this movie is totally formulaic and predictable?
Nevertheless, Burt and Bruce are always worth the price of admission, so I'd watch it, but not expect too many surprises. Hopefully next time the producers will actually hire writers who can develop characters and throw a few surprises in to spice up the movie.
hard to kill.......2005-08-06
Another good movie of Bruce Dern as Marshal Hutchinson still crafty as he was in the movie "Hang Them High" and that was 30 yr's ago and still he looks good and very impressive.Burt and Bruce has such a good understanding that it seems both injoyed making this movie.Burt Reynolds as John McKay who was being transfered to Yuma Prison along with David Figlioli as Billy Bucklin as the chief villian and rest of the hardend criminal's in a prison van and they breakout leaving Burt Reynolds to die in the desert without water or horse. Thats where the story starts. The Outdoor Photography is really beautiful. The sunset in the mountains is breath taking.Marshal's sister married john McKay and had a son named joshua (Seth Peterson)who was broughtup by the marshal and he becomes his deputy and a decent citizen.Joshua rescue's a Elizabeth Kennedy (Amy Jo Johnson) on the way following the tracks of escapies. Its a deadly game of Manhunt,Story is Written by a famous writer Frank Q Dobbs (Johnson County War, Streets of Laredo)It was also directed by him. I liked this movie as any other good old western.

So if you love the 80s you should see this film; if not rent "Say Anything" because every one should see this movie once.
good oldie.......2007-03-09
This movie is an older movie but still has a lot of charm. It is great to see Seth Green and Patrick Dempsey when they were kids. It has a lot of laughs and sincere moments in it. a must see!

Roadsign ahead reads 'You'll see it coming'.......2005-12-04
CAPTURED is a thriller which pits a development tycoon against a car thief.
Holden Downs (Nick Mancuso) is a developer who has his dream of building Millenium City halted due to a lawsuit by a conservation group. Two car thieves choose the wrong time to attempt a theft of Holden's car and he takes it out on one of them by breaking his arm. This act leaves a bad taste is the mouth of the older brother, Robert Breed (Andrew Divoff), who plans to steal the car for good. Meanwhile, Holden, who has not taken kindly to the threat, has the security system on the car updated to set a trap for the would be car thief. Robert acts on his plan to steal the car and end up as Holden's captive; pitting two captor and captive against each other with a downward spiral which presents a moral dilemma of going too far and at what point one went too far.
CAPTURED does a good job of maintaining its pace and giving Mancuso quite a bit of dialogue to deliver overzealously. As Divoff presents a balancing character, it is ashame that they did not give him as much with which he could work, leaving his character underdeveloped. Despite this, Divoff does give a good performance with what he has. The imbalance in the characters, even though Mancuso's character is the primary, takes away from the potential to sypathize with other than Mancuso's character, and that will disappear in short order.
What CAPTURED ends up presenting is a story about one man, who nobody cares about, and a thief, who nobody cares about, winding its way through a predictable series of events and an overdrawn ending which was obvious well before the movie got there.
Despite this, CAPTURED does maintain a good pace with Mancuso and Divoff working well off of each other. There are moments of tension which raise the film above its own predictability. CAPTURED is not a movie I would highly recommend, but, if you have nothing better to do, it will not bore. It frankly strikes me as a 95 minute episode of The Outer Limits with its moral dilemma and its twist ending.--Bob
Peter Liapis definitely did a good job with this movie........2002-02-10
This movie was so good, all I can say is, "wow." One of the best thrillers I have seen in a long time. Peter Liapis who starred in Ghoulies and Ghoulies IV wrote and directed this movie. It was creepy and suspenseful.
Andrew Divoff stars in this movie as a petty thief who gets caught trying to steal a car owned by Holden Down (Nick Mancuso) and ends up trapped in the car.
During the middle/end of the movie, Andrew (Robert Breed) gets out and then things get really interesting. From the beginning to the end the movie kept up with the plot, and it never got boring.
I think in the beginning though, it is kind of hard to understand until you see Andrew's character and his Brother going after Holden's car, then it starts from there when Holden catches his Brother and breaks his arm. The acting was really good, Andrew Divoff was the best actor in this movie. I enjoyed his performance as well as Nick Mancusos.
A Great Straight to video release.......2001-02-05
Just like to say simply, that this is one of the best straight to video titles I have ever seen.
It's one of those movies that is SO much better than it sounds, and therefore greatly under -rated!
I was on the edge of my seat all the time!!
Nick Mancuso at his best.......2000-07-17
I loved this picture. First, the twist of the story itself and a moral dilemma in it, second - brilliant performance by Nick Mancuso - his character , who used to be IN CONTROL AND LOVING IT, now being on the edge of insanity... Well, Nick Mancuso IS IN CONTROL of your attention till the very end. Add music, photography... An hour and a half very well spent!
Attention: All Ye Michael Mahonen Fans!.......2000-06-28
Michael Mahonen is one of Canada's finest actors. I loved him when he played,"Lee Colagen",on the CBS/Canadian mini-series, "Conspiracy of Silence". I also agreed with other people that he role should have been more in-depth. On "Captured", I feel as though they wasted the talent of a good actor. Is there a website for Michael Mahonen; if so, please let me and the rest of his U.S. fans know about it. Thanks.

It has been four years and still there is no sign of marriage.
Laura feels that she has given Wil enough time to propose. So, with the encouragement of her close friend and guidance from the best selling dating manual, "The Law", she decides that the best way to get Wil to the alter is . . . to dump him.
Following Step #1 of "The Law", Laura wakes up one morning and says "goodbye" to Wil. Shattered, Wil commiserates with his best friend, George, who has also just been "dumped," and finds himself on an emotional roller coaster ride as Laura tries desperately to follow the book and get him to commit.
When "The Law" advises Laura to make her man jealous, she begins dating her ex-boyfriend. Overcome with jealousy and against George's recommendation, Wil stalks Laura's old flame. She continues to follow the advise of the book and arranges for the two to conveniently run into each other at a party, where sparks ignite.
Now Laura moves on to the most important phase of "The Law" -- RISK EVERYTHING. She stages an engagement to another man. Wil is devastated. Laura's plan seems to be working until Wil believes that the relationship is truly over and moves on --
Realizing that her plan has gone awry, Laura throws out the book, only to find that she may have lost Wil forever.
In a climactic series of twists and turns, true love prevails as Wil and Laura find their way back to one another.
