In a fitting follow-up to <I>Rushmore</I>, writer-director Wes Anderson and cowriter-actor Owen Wilson have crafted another comedic masterwork that ripples with inventive, richly emotional substance. Because of the all-star cast, hilarious dialogue, and oddball characters existing in their own, wholly original universe, it's easy to miss the depth and complexity of Anderson's brand of comedy. Here, it revolves around Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman), the errant patriarch of a dysfunctional family of geniuses, including precocious playwright Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow), boyish financier and grieving widower Chas (Ben Stiller), and has-been tennis pro Richie (Luke Wilson). All were raised with supportive detachment by mother Etheline (Anjelica Huston), and all ache profoundly for a togetherness they never really had. The Tenenbaums reconcile somehow, but only after Anderson and Wilson (who costars as a loopy literary celebrity) put them through a compassionate series of quirky confrontations and rekindled affections. Not for every taste, but this is brilliant work from any perspective. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) and his wife Etheline (Anjelica Huston) had three children-Chas, Margot, and Richie-and then they separated. Chas (Ben Stiller) started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have an almost preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) was a playwright and received a Braverman Grant of $50,000 in the ninth grade. Richie (Luke Wilson) was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure, and disaster. The Criterion Collection is proud to present Wes Anderson's hilarious, touching, and brilliantly stylized study of melancholy and redemption.

1 out of 5 stars What is it with these movies?.......2007-06-17

These should be a new genre for all the wierd movies popping up like this...I bought this movie a few years ago, and could not even sell it in a garage sale, so I am still stuck with it. I HATE this movie. It has such an all-star cast- but it's awful.
What is with these movies? I mean, do people honestly find these dry, awkward, pointless, trite comdies (with no funny parts) any good?
It's a waste of film.....and nothing special.

4 out of 5 stars oh criterion.......2007-06-10

i dont understand the criterion collection aside from being overpriced, but i must say, i love wes anderson

he is not a director that all can watch though - slow and lengthy films = if you love him you love him, but there is no gray

if you have never seen one of his films, i would suggest rushmore as a first dip into the movies of anderson

3 out of 5 stars Too Sad To Be Funny, Too Funny To Be Sad.......2007-04-08

This is a comedy remake of The Godfather Part lll. No, really. You have the father who tries to reconcile with his broken family, only to fall back into his old conniving ways and discover that it was too late anyway. Oh, and you have the incestuous subplot. It's all there!

I was seriously dissapointed in this movie after Rushmore. But the more I think about it, the more I want to see it again. Ultimately, I think this is a movie about a guy who has spent his life running from his family thinking there was something better in life. He finally realizes there is nothing better. But he's been scamming his way through life for so long that he can't ever communicate his remorse and loneliness sincerely.

But this is a comedy, not a tragedy--even if it often borders on tragedy. I think the comedy comes from the fact that the characters have an instinct to do the right thing but they just don't know how. But knowing they are trying is good enough. Almost.

5 out of 5 stars Hillarious, Intelligent, Quirky.......2007-03-09

The Royal Tenenbaums is a very rare film, the perfect blend of Wes Anderson's unique style with some of the best talent in Hollywood. While the movie is definitely open to criticism, I find the family dynamics to be scarily reminiscent to my own--minus the adopted Margot thread. A film about my family is sure to have a limited audience, since most people don't care about the same things we care about. However, if you're willing to look about some of Anderson's randomness, the heart of his film is very powerful and had me laughing more than any other film of recent memory.

5 out of 5 stars Straight to the point.......2007-02-26

I'll skip the plot breakdown and try to explain what it is about this movie that I love so much. First is the characters, who are all messed up and highly unique. Their personalities are breifly described in the beggining of the movie, and their characters develop from then on. Second is the setting of the movie. The house, the gym, the city, everything has a certain retro feel. The next thing I love about this movie is the dark humor, I never thought suicide could be funny, but I was wrong! The story, the writing, the music, everything is so wonderfully integrated, another Wes classic.

Finally, Bill Murray... enough said.

Wes Anderson's follow-up to the quirky <I>Bottle Rocket</I> is a wonderfully unorthodox coming-of-age story that ranks with <I>Harold and Maude</I> and <I>The Graduate</I> in the pantheon of timeless cult classics. Jason Schwartzman (son of Talia Shire and nephew of Francis Coppola) stars as Max Fischer, a 15-year-old attending the prestigious Rushmore Academy on scholarship, where he's failing all of his classes but is the superstar of the school's extracurricular activities (head of the drama club, the beekeeper club, the fencing club...). Possessing boundless confidence and chutzpah, as well as an aura of authority he seems to have been born with, Max finds two unlikely soulmates in his permutations at Rushmore: industrial magnate and Rushmore alumnus Herman Blume (Bill Murray) and first-grade teacher Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams). His alliance with Blume and crush on Miss Cross, however, are thrown out of kilter by his expulsion from Rushmore, and a budding romance between the two adults that threatens Max's own designs on the lovely schoolteacher.

Never stooping to sentimentality or schmaltz, Anderson and cowriter Owen Wilson have fashioned a wickedly intelligent and wildly funny tale of young adulthood that hits all the right notes in its mix of melancholy and optimism. As played by Schwartzman, Max is both immediately endearing and ferociously irritating: smarter than all the adults around him, with little sense of his shortcomings, he's an unstoppable dynamo who commands grudging respect despite his outlandish projects (including a school play about Vietnam). Murray, as the tycoon who determinedly wages war with Max for the affections of Miss Cross, is a revelation of middle-aged resignation. Disgusted with his family, his life, and himself, he's turned around by both Max's antagonism and Miss Cross's love. Williams is equally affecting as the teacher who still carries a torch for her dead husband, and the superb supporting cast also includes Seymour Cassel as Max's barber father, Brian Cox as the frustrated headmaster of Rushmore, and a hilarious Mason Gamble as Max's young charge. Put this one on your shelf of modern masterpieces. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

Description

RUSHMORE is the story of a gifted, rebellious teenager named Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a 10th grader at elite Rushmore Academy. Editor of the school newspaper, captain or president of innumerable clubs and societies, Max is also one of the worst students in the school, and the threat of expulsion hangs permanently over his head. Max's world is rocked when he falls for elegant 1st grade teacher Miss Cross (Olivia Williams) and he plans to erect an aquarium in her honor -- then finds himself competing for her affections with his friend, steel tycoon Mr. Blume (Bill Murray), the wealthy father of two of his classmates.

5 out of 5 stars Get Them In Your Crosshairs And Take Them Down..........2007-06-24

This is probably my favorite movie of all time.
The story concerns one Max Fischer, 15 years old, student at the illustrious Rushmore Academy. But Max is not your average student- he's one of the worst.
Max (Schwartzman) befriends wealthy industrialist Herman Bloom (Murray), and falls in love with Rushmore's newest teacher, Rosemary, a widow from England, and unleashes some truly machiavellian schemes to get her to fall in love with him, (including trying to build an unauthorized aquarium for her on school grounds, backed by Mr. Bloom's millions), getting himself expelled in the process. Meanwhile, the married Herman also falls in love with her and they begin to have an affair, which sets off one of the funniest sequences in American film history; watching a 50 year-old man being attacked by bees that have mysteriously invaded his hotel room and intentionally running over a 15 year old boy's bicycle always makes me smile.
In the end, Max learns alot about life and love and friendship and all of that, and makes peace with Mr. Bloom, Rosemary, the memory of his deceased mother and the end of his tenure at Rushmore Academy. While watching, ask yourself why Max does what he does, why he never wants to leave Rushmore- his reason, never stated, is among the most touching aspects of a character that I have ever seen in any movie.
The soundtrack is truly amazing, as with all of the Wes Anderson films; check out The Who singing "A Quick One While He's Away."
The best thing I can say about this movie is that most people will see a bit of themselves and the people they know in the characters. Truly a wonderful film.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most original and entertaining comedies of the '90s..........2007-05-23

Since making his directing debut with the 1996 cult caper film "Bottle Rocket," Wes Anderson has established himself as one of film's most exciting young directors. His second film, "Rushmore," is a witty, heartfelt and often amusing film that features a hilarious performance by Bill Murray.

Anderson wrote the quirky script with his right-hand man, actor Owen Wilson, with whom he also collaborated on "Bottle Rocket" and "The Royal Tenenbaums." The story follows the trials and travails of high school student Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a sharp kid who focuses his attention on a plethora of offbeat extracurricular pursuits (fencing club, Latin, playwriting) rather than his studies.

In between attending to his various activities at Rushmore (the name of the private school he attends), Max develops a crush on Miss Cross (Olivia Williams), an elementary school teacher at his school. He also befriends Herman Blume (Bill Murray), an eccentric millionaire whose two sons attend school with Max.

Things soon fall apart for Max: The school expels him, Miss Cross denies his flirtations, and Blume begins courting Miss Cross himself. That sets up an extremely funny tete-a-tete between Max and Blume, highlighted by the scene in which Blume runs over Max's bike with his car.

As the intriguing love triangle of Max, Blume and Miss Cross plays out, Max finds solace in his caring father and a female student at his new school. The ending, which features all the characters coming together to watch Max's newest play, is entirely satisfying without being hokey or cynical.

Schwartzman, the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola ("The Godfather"), exhibits a great knack for comedy throughout "Rushmore." But Murray steals the show with a masterfully funny turn that scored him a Golden Globe Nomination and Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor. In one unforgettable scene, Herman suggests that his sons invite Max to their birthday party. "There's gonna be girls there," replies one. "Yeah," adds the other, "Get your head out of your a--." Murray's initial deadpan reaction will have you howling; his subsequent reach into the back seat to pummel his son will have you rolling on the floor.

Anderson, who captured the Independent Spirit Award for Best Director, exhibits a sense of craft that's rare for comedic directors. Rather than depend solely on physical gags or even amusing one-liners, Anderson uses set direction, art direction and music to enhance his vision. Even if your sense of humor doesn't jive with Anderson's, you'll walk away from "Rushmore" with an appreciation for his careful attention to detail.

5 out of 5 stars You either love it or hate it........2007-05-12

You have to love the little moments because this movie is made of little moments. I watched this before I knew it was a comedy and when I found out it was I figured they just couldn't think of anywhere else to put it. This movie makes me feel like there are lots of things moving and changing that have nothing to do with me. A lot of people say they don't like the movie because they think Max is a prick. You're supposed to feel that way, I think. You're supposed to forgive him for that because he's got something special in him, or at least that in his case he knows about it. But it also seems like some people don't like the movie because it's different. I guess that if you're patient and you like the little things, you'll enjoy this movie. Also, if you feel like you're left out or sort of an outcast you might enjoy this movie. You know, the kind of person that doesn't have red or hammer as the first thing they think of when you ask them for a tool and a color.

3 out of 5 stars Not really my cup of tea....*Spoilers*.......2007-03-20

2.5 stars. I'm not really sure how I feel about this movie. I truely didn't contect to Max. I, too, found him to be a pompous spoiled brat and often times bordered on the creepy side in his pursuit of Mrs. Cross. And I'm not sure where his air of entitlement came from. For a boy with such humble orgins, his character seems totally out of whack. Bill Murray surely has his middle-aged blues shtick down (Lost in translation/Broken Flowers). he, too, was not a character I could root for. I understand he was not happy with the direction of his life, but the whole affair thing just seems so typical...and I'm not sure if he and Mrs. Cross were going to pick up things where they left off or not. Max never does pick up his grades or cut back on the extracurriculum activies--so I'm not sure about his character arch. He's pretty much the same boy at the end of the film as he was in the begining. Oh, except, he does admit his father is a barber now. Overall, check it out at your own peril.

3 out of 5 stars Great flick for nerds.......2007-03-11

OK...my title is a little mean, but I found this kid, whom we're supposed to "just love" a little mean and the fact that I lost sympathy for him early on (due to his meanness) kept me from rooting for him. This is defintely a film in which we are supposed to root for the hero (or the anti-hero)...the adorable short nerdy kid with a big nose and glasses. His mother died of cancer, his father is a poor-but-good hearted barber,
he got into this fancy prep school on a scholarship, he is so smart that he solved a math problem that stumped MIT profs in a matter of minutes, etc. And the school bully picks on him.

Well he isn't really that nice, himself. He's insufferably rude to the Chinese girl, destroys Blume's marriage without a second thought, disables Blume's car which could have killed him. But he's still "adorable nerdy Max" so we're supposed to overlook these quirks and love him. I found his egotism much more annoying than cute.

I suspect that guys who felt like nerds in middle school might like this film due to some sort of wish fulfillment but beware, he doesn't end up with the pretty school teacher in the end! Maybe if another, more naturally likable actor had starred I'd have more interest in him..(Leonardo DiCaprio captured our sympathy as a young kid, in spite of committing huge crimes in Catch Me if You Can and I think that a lot of that was due to DiCaprio's natural sweetness) Jason Shwartzman (whom I actually liked a lot in Marie Antoinette) just didn't grab my heart the way the script obviously intended. Only once, when he smiled in the end did he seem a little sympathetic. For most of the film he sails through his antics with a vague superior smirk on an opaque, masklike face. There's no light there except an evil glint in his eyes when he's seeking revenge.

He looks like a cross between Woody Allan and Groucho Marx (were those his real eyebrows?.) Maybe if you find those guys endearing, you'll love Max. Otherwise... well, I warned you.

On the plus side, Bill Murray was genuinely touching and funny and many of the supporting cast were very good. I liked the music too.

<I>61*</I> is an endearing ode to the baseball days of yore when the press was the enemy, salaries were in check, and breaking records with bat and glove took on Ruthian proportions. In 1961 baseball expanded its season from 154 games to 162, allowing weaker pitching into the major leagues and two New York Yankees teammates--the colorless Roger Maris and golden boy Mickey Mantle--to make an assault on the sport's ultimate record: Babe Ruth's 60 home runs. To add to the stew, baseball commissioner Ford Frick announced any record set in the last eight games of the season wouldn't count toward the official record; records had to be achieved in 154 games.

Director Billy Crystal guarantees success for his movie in the perfect casting of the leads. Barry Pepper (<I>Saving Private Ryan</I>'s religious sniper) is deft as Maris, and Thomas Jane is a perfect Mantle, a superman in a Yankee uniform. Despite the differences between family man Maris and hard-living Mantle, they form a rewarding friendship amid the media and fan frenzy. The shy Maris took the brunt of the storm, even facing boo-birds in his home stadium. Crystal and first-time writer Hank Steinberg keep the pace moving quickly between the field, the locker room, the press box, and the home front. The film never tries to dazzle with more than the facts (and it softens Mantle up a bit), yet it belongs on the short list of grand baseball movies. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

5 out of 5 stars Another great baseball movie!.......2007-05-29

I think that I have never watched a game of baseball on tv all the way through. I have been to see some great teams play live, including one of the last games with Nolan Ryan pitching. So you could say I'm not a fan, nor am I a complete non fan.

However, I find that I almost always love baseball movies! Bull Duram, The Natural, The Rookie, The Babe, Field of Dreams, Eight Men Out, etc, etc, etc...

Here in "61" is another great Drama, with comedic moments, but more so a touching film, that explores the trials and tribulations of greatness. Watching this fillm is an excellent way to spend a couple of hours!

4 out of 5 stars Still the homerun King.......2007-03-07

I wasn't alive during the chase. Wasn't born until 20 years later. However my father was and his father as well. From what they tell me, it was a great time for baseball. It was a great time to be a baseball fan. Little did I know that in the summer of '98, I'd be going through a chase of my own. Yes, it was a great moment for baseball, and yes it was great to be a fan.

However, as we all now know, the most respected record in all of baseball was tainted soon after by allegations and denials and by the sheer un-believability that 61 and eventually 70 would fall. As baseball fans we went through enormous highs to then go through an enormous low. Some of us are still stuck down there actually.

So a couple of fans of my father's generation decided to come out with a true story of baseball glory. A real chase of monumental proportions was made available to us in the movie, 61. Some of us younger fans were glad we got to see records being broken, but now the majority of us feel cheated. We didn't get to see records being broken. We got to see records being stolen. So what do we have to look back to? What can we say was the greatest moment in baseball history while we were alive? Right now, I can't think of any. This is why I appreciate the efforts of this movie to tell the true-life story of the real chase between Mantle and Maris for Ruth's record. While I was never ther to witness it for myself, I can certainly paint a picture now thanks to Billy Crystal and to the actors involved.

I don't think I can rate this movie based on performances, but I can rate this movie based on facts and what is real. Something whole and pure was brought back to us some 40 years later to remind us of how pure the game used to be. This film is not the greatest film ever made, but if you're a generational baseball fan, this movie stands right next to the likes of Field of Dreams and others who were true to the sport of baseball.

1 out of 5 stars Crystal's "Rewriting of history" is a shameful joke.......2006-12-30

Crystal's rewriting of history does no one any service. The historical scene about Mantle complaining that he "failed" his draft induction physical is laughable at best. Mantle was selected to the all star team that year! He was MVP later! Mantle was known as the "fastest man to first base" at this time, and his complaint that he couldn't serve is a joke. Boston Red Sox's Ted Williams, while in Korea on his SECOND tour of military duty (WWII was his first), stated when he was crash landed his fighter jet, he ran away from it "FASTER THAN MICKEY MANTLE!" Crystal a draft dodger himslf (Vietnam), should be ashamed of this portrayal of Mantle and rewriting history! Disgusting.

It's appropriate that this extravaganza of lowbrow cinema had its premiere at the 2006 Cinevegas Film Festival, because what happens in Artie Lange's Beer League should stay in Artie Lange's Beer League. Lange is most recognizable for his stint in the Mad TV ensemble, but probably more idolized by the people who will get wild kicks from his leading man debut as the resident guest-baiter and booze/scatological/flatulence/sex joke expert on Howard Stern's radio show. Those are the same kinds of laughs this movie relies on in telling the wisp of a story about a bunch of New Jersey boneheads whose lives are fulfilled by softball games and the beer-guzzling that goes on before, during, and after. Artie's team is proud to be in the bottom ranks of their league, especially when brawls erupt at games against their slick, archrival team. Artie and the rest of his team know these arrogant jerks in their immaculate black (of course) uniforms are unbeatable, so it's only natural that Artie thinks its easier to just beat the hell out of them. The local cop who's had to deal with both teams finally gets so angry with the escalating brawls that he issues an ultimatum: Whichever team loses the season has to disband and never play on the league again. It's kind of an utterly tasteless version of The Bad News Bears for people who like their movies vulgar, offensive, misogynistic, and often really funny in spite of it all. Some of the subplots and supporting players include Ralph Macchio as one of Artie's childhood friends who's about to get married (cue depraved bachelor party scene with lots of topless babes), Mary Birdsong from Reno 911! as a kooky waitress, and a delightful turn by crusty character actor Seymour Cassel as Artie's teammate Dirt, who may be old but loves booze, fisticuffs, and debauchery as much as anyone. For some reason, Artie's foul-mouthed slobbery attracts a local Jersey girl (Cara Buono), even though he's jobless and still lives with his mom (Laurie Metcalf, who should get some kind of good sport award). The buffoonery doesn't just stop with the movie. There's also more than two hour of bonus material tailored for Artie Lange enthusiasts who probably number more than you'd think -- whether they'd ever admit it or not. --Ted Fry

4 out of 5 stars Lewd, crude, offensive, and downright hilarious.......2007-06-25

For the purposes of my review of Beer League, I want you to forget about Howard Stern - more to the point, don't judge your potential enjoyment of this movie based on your dislike of the infamous shock jock. I for one do not care for Stern (and I had no idea Artie Lange was ever involved with the radio show), but I pretty much loved this movie. Sure, it's tasteless and juvenile and has to rank near the top in terms of its curse words per minute average (the MPAA's R rating is based on "non-stop language" among other things), but you know what? I say this is all about boys being boys - Jersey boys being Jersey boys, to be more exact. As a proud Southerner, I'm not naturally drawn to full-fledged Yankees, but you can't help but feel a kinship with real, 100% men like Artie and his gang who concentrate on the three B's: brewskis, baseball (or softball), and babes.

You know how some guys never grow up? Well, that's Artie DeVanzo in a nutshell. He's a thirty-something, beer-guzzling, unemployed lazy slob who lives with his mother (Roseanne's Laurie Metcalf) and is still all caught up in a high school rivalry with the slick and slimy Dennis Mangenelli (Anthony DeSando). Things get especially heated between their respective softball teams. This year, the police chief has had enough of breaking up the annual fisticuffs, so he decrees that whichever team finishes behind the other one will be thrown out of the beer league. This puts Artie and his buddies at quite a disadvantage, as they really aren't very good. Artie himself likes to smoke and drink out on the field. After an 0-5 start, though, the guys decide they might need to actually practice if they want to make a miracle comeback and give themselves a chance to knock out Mangenelli's team in the championship game.

Artie Lange is pretty funny, but he could never have carried this movie on his back; luckily, the supporting cast is very funny. Johnny Trinno (Jimmy Palumbo) always made me laugh with his play-by-play of his .700-chasing at bats, Cara Buono is great as Artie's used-goods but improbably attractive girlfriend, and Ralph Macchio proves he has put his annoying Karate Kid character completely behind him as he plays Artie's best friend Maz (who, in the spirit of the Jersey beer league, postponed his wedding until the end of the season).

Beer League is clearly a guys' movie; unless your girl likes to engage in belching contests and actually understands the basics of professional baseball, she probably ain't going to like this movie one single bit. It's not like Artie is a noble hero in disguise; he's a jerk for the most part (except when compared with Mangenelli), he's offensive in just about every way possible, and he's basically everything a woman isn't looking for in a man. For us guys, though, Artie's crude gestures and words, not to mention the give-and-take and acerbic dialogue that defines this movie, are oftentimes as funny as all get out.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a few laughs.......2007-06-03

This movie is about a man who is unemployed, living at home with his mother who continues to live life to it's fullest...at least full on whiskey. Artie Lange plays a man who lives for softball, but hasn't played well in years. Now after letting his temper get the best of him as always, his team may be out of the league forever if they do not try and turn it around. Also featuring Ralph Macchio and Jimmy Palumbo, this is a pretty funny crew. The humor is relatively crude, but still make will make you laugh enough to enjoy at least viewing this once. Onother note, special features are really not that special. Rent this or borrow it, but not a buyer.

3 out of 5 stars It's Not Bad!.......2007-05-31

This movie wasn't as good as I thought it would be. But it wasn't terrible either. It's an average movie with some admittedly hilarious parts here and there. I can say that I didn't regret my purchase of this movie.

3 out of 5 stars funny but as funny .......2007-05-25

great movie the "pitching machine" is so funny some of it is it's just a dirty movie you don't need to use the F word after every other word because It sounds a lot like me the keratie kid is in her alon with some stand u p comidiens it gets a 3 because there was not enoufh nudityArtie Lange's Beer League

2 out of 5 stars Beware Stern Fans...........2007-05-16

I am a huge fan of Howard Stern's radio show. Even though I am not particularly fond of Artie Lang's contribution to the radio show I wanted to see this film due to Stern's saying he laughed alot of lot when he watched it. I really wanted to like this film but unfortunately it was pretty bad. It has been 2 weeks and I still wonder how is it such a bad film gets made and break even.
I give it 2 stars because I was able to endure the film but I was not enjoying it and the end could not come soon enough. It wasn't so bad that I had to turn it off before the end BUT I definitely wouldn't have been oppossed to it.
Bottomline- If you are "curious" about this film and would like to see the film as I did, sure, that's fine...but if you are looking for more than fulfillment of your curiosity then don't bother. Then on the other hand if you are a Lange fan you will see it no matter what I say so hope you like it.

Amazon.com essential video

A flawed but stylish adaptation of the Chester Gould comic strip by director Warren Beatty, who also stars in the title role. The minimalist plot involves a battalion of baddies who confront the intrepid detective in a series of strung-together vignettes. Al Pacino is a comedic if overblown standout as Big Boy Caprice, and Madonna simply smolders as aggressive blonde bombshell Breathless Mahoney. It matters not that the plot is Spartan, as this dazzling eye candy is much enhanced by Stephen Sondheim's songs, including the Academy Award-winning ditty, "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)." Beatty took his cue from the source material and concentrated on the relationships between these people, whether strained, romantic, or hateful. The performances are subtle and more amusing than you would expect from such a visually bold picture. Shot in bright, primary colors, this also won Oscars for Best Art/Set Direction and Makeup (for those inventively hideous criminals). Watch for well-known names, such as Dustin Hoffman and Dick Van Dyke, in cameo appearances and supporting roles. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Description

Dedicated to his work but at the same time devoted to his loyal girlfriend, Tess Trueheart, Tracy find himself torn between love and duty. His relentless crusade against crime becomes even more difficult when he gets saddled with an engaging orphan and meets seductive and sultry Breathless Mahoney, a torch singer determined to get the best of Tracy. A faceless character, the Blank, threatens both Tracy and Big Boy, and it takes all of Tracy's skills to save the city.

A good movie with lots of known players. Good clean fun. Brings back the good old days. Enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie for the dectective at heart.......2007-05-15

Dick Tracy is an action packed classic detective story. The movie features loads of bad guys that each has a unique visual presence throughout the movie. Warren Beatty gives a realistic and believable performance as Dick Tracy himself. For those looking for some nostalgic Madonna action, look no further. She's stylish and sexy in those black outfits she wears.

If you're looking for a fun night at the movies, this is a winner!

5 out of 5 stars Dick Tracy.......2007-05-13

Excellent film! Excellent soundtrack! Seen it time and time again.

Why Marvell Cariaga is listed as the main star, I have no idea. Warren Beatty is the main character.

3 out of 5 stars a good film bad judgement.......2007-02-25

why is itevery time beatty enters the picture with a film hes gotta louse it up by acting in it i know he like to look at himself in the mirror but so dose every other director look at george lucas for example and you dont see him screwing all his films up well not all his films any way take this picture for instantce it could do without the love story and stick to the point of the plot getting caprice this is why sin city was great it stuck to the point second nobody cares for madonna somebody else that could have stayed out of this film ive read dick tracy its no brodway comic strip or disney for that matter frank miller should have taken over the screenplay and did it justice.hopefully somebody else will remake this film but with beatty fighting to ruin the strip yet again in court that wont be happening anytime soon.

5 out of 5 stars Film/Comic Book Noir at its Best.......2007-01-28

With great performances from Al Pacino to Dustin Hoffman, music by Sondheim and Danny Elfman, and beautiful colors and costumes, this is a truly unique and highly enjoyable movie each time you watch it.

If you have an appetite for Sicilian soapers, then you're like all those other people who made <I>Mario Puzo's The Last Don</I> the highest Nielsen-rated show for the week in mid-May 1997 when it originally aired. And who could blame you, since the story line of this TV miniseries is chock-full of all the familiar elements that make up a bestseller--power, money, sex, murder, gambling, madness, fame, Hollywood, loyalties made and broken. The story proper begins with a little <I>Romeo and Juliet</I> when Rose Marie, daughter of Don Domenico Clericuzio (Danny Aiello), falls for the youngest son of the warring Santadio family. On their wedding night, Rose Marie's new husband and the entire Santadio family are slaughtered by the Clericuzios to avoid further conflict between the two families, and Rose Marie goes completely insane and grows up to be Kirstie Alley. But not before she gives birth to another Santadio, Dante (so named because he has to live in Hell), in whom she invests all her hatred for her own family. So he grows up to be a psychotic hitman, played with sly and sadistic ingenuity by Rory Cochrane. The Clericuzios' chief executioner, Pippi (played with smooth aplomb by Joe Mantegna), is responsible for killing Rose Marie's husband, and wants his own son, metaphorically overburdened with the name "Cross," to follow in his footsteps. The sins of the fathers are visiting all over the sons in this picture, and naturally the two kids will have to resolve this inheritance. The acting is the main attraction here. Aiello in particular invests The Don with a stately grace that is just right. <I>--Jim Gay</I>

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Mafia Movie.......2007-06-09

I saw this on tv, and bought it as a gift to a Mafia fantatic, and he loved it!

5 out of 5 stars The Last Don by PK Reyes.......2007-05-13

Now this was a good Mafia Movie! Action, Action, and more Action. The acting was supuerb! Danny Aiello out done himself in this. This movie is about a mafia family, how father finally wanted the family to go legit. They were too far in to get out. Movie not for anyone under 13. The movie is rather long, but it won't matter because the action, drama, story keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time! This movie has a great group of actors. The movie is long, but the actions seems to never end. I tried to find this movie in the library, video stores, I had difficulty finding it. Oh I found the book, but I remember seeing the movie years ago as a mini series.Thank you Amazon for having it available. What other little treasures do you have??

3 out of 5 stars I've got space for this.......2007-04-26

Kept in suspense every minute. Danny Aiello finally displays his finer talent as the Don. Has the required skill. Kirsty Alley portrays dreadful hate and darkness toward the Don, the Clericuzio. Jason Gedrick, innocent from the start, a given for the future. Serious family business headed toward the flame. Ruthless to the point, perhaps wiser.
Never cross the Don. Ever.

2 out of 5 stars The Godfather it isn't...........2006-08-07

I remember this movie from when I was a kid...was a television min-series type deal. If you really like mafia movies, this one is adequate, but not spectacular. The characters come off almost goofy at times, and the acting is a bit over dramatic. It's certainly not close to Godfather quality...but taken for what it is, I've definitely seen worse movies too.

4 out of 5 stars Love "Godfather" type movies.......2006-07-04

I love these types of movies. To update the "Godfather" bring the family into the techno age, I like it.

In <I>The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou</I>, director Wes Anderson takes his familiar stable of actors on a field trip to a fantasy aquarium, complete with stop-motion, candy-striped crabs and rainbow seahorses. And though Anderson does expand his horizons in terms of retro-special effects and a whimsical use of color, fans will otherwise find themselves in well-charted waters. As <I>The Life Aquatic</I> opens, Zissou (Bill Murray), a self-involved, Jacques Cousteau-like filmmaker, has just released a documentary depicting the death of his best friend Esteban, who was eaten by some sort of sea creature--possibly a jaguar shark. Zissou's troubles also include his waning popularity with the public, and a nemesis (Jeff Goldblum) who hogs up all the grant money. Hope arrives in the form of Ned Plimpton (Owen Wilson), an amiable Kentuckian who may be Zissou's son. Despite his lack of enthusiasm for fatherhood, Zissou welcomes Ned--and Ned in turn saves Zissou's new documentary (in which he seeks revenge on the jaguar shark) in more ways than one.

One of Wes Anderson's greatest achievements as a director to date has been launching the autumnal melancholy phase of Bill Murray's career, starting with <I>Rushmore</I> in 1998, and Murray delivers a similarly comedic yet low-key performance here. Unfortunately, Zissou is one of the few characters in this ensemble to achieve multi-dimensionality. Even co-star Wilson doesn't get to develop Ned much beyond Noble Southerner, and he ends up seeming more like a prop for illustrating Zissou's emotional development rather than his own man. <I>The Life Aquatic</I> probably won't be remembered as a great film, but it is still one that no Anderson (or Murray) fan can afford to miss.--<I>Leah Weathersby</I>

Description

Internationally famous oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) and his crew -- Team Zissou -- set sail on a expedition to hunt down the mysterious, elusive -- possibly nonexistent -- Jaguar Shark that killed Zissou's partner during the documentary filming of their latest adventure. They are joined on their voyage by a young airline co-pilot, who may or may not be Zissou's son (Owen Wilson), a beautiful journalist (Cate Blanchett) assigned to write a profile of Zissou, and his estranged wife and co-producer, Eleanor (Anjelica Huston). They face overwhelming complications including pirates, kidnapping, and bankruptcy. Oscar(R)-nominated writer-director (Best Original Screenplay, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, 2001) Wes Anderson has assembled an all-star cast that also includes Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Michael Gambon, Noah Taylor, and Bud Cort in this wildly original adventure-comedy.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Maybe it was too deep for me.......2007-06-12

If there was humor in this film it was over my head. I found nothing in this film to be even mildly humorous let alone down right funny. I think the joke is on the people who paid money to see it. Someone who says they see the 'genius' in this film is either deluding themselves, lying or a heck of a lot more thoughtful than I am. My advice: Avoid this garbage at all costs.

5 out of 5 stars Comedic genius. Better than Rushmore........2007-06-11

This movie is so funny and surprisingly there is a real story in it as well. This movie has a laugh in spite of itself, while coming off as dryly serious. Bill Murray is a master of this kind of delivery. You have to listen to the entire dialogue of this movie, alot of the jokes are subtle and you may need to use your brain. Yes the fish look stupid, beautifully done but utterly fake looking. Yes Zissou smokes pot like a chimney, but he is utterly confident in his ability to come out on top. Being the ever sarcastic wise cracker Murray is at the top of his game here. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Life Aquatic, Freaky Zissou Styley.......2007-05-12

This is one of my favorite movies and I was glad to finally get it on DVD. The special features are nice for a fan like me, you can see how incredibly creepy Mark Mothersbaugh is and what the actor who plays Esteban had to think, along with lots of great footage of Seu Jorge playing his guitar.

A must have for fans of the movie. I understand this is one of those polarizing movies where people with good taste and a good sense of humor get it and love it, while lots of other people don't get it. If you saw it and got it, then get this; or if you are into strange, odd, dark-ish, and/or interesting comedies, then check this out.

Peace
Blessed Be

1 out of 5 stars Boring!!!.......2007-05-03

I am sorry but I do like Bill Murray and Owen Wilson. But this movie is just plain bad and is very boring. I turned it off after the first hour when the movie was developing into nothing. I don't leave bad reviews like this unless they are very bad, and this one is. Rent something else, anything else besides this one.

4 out of 5 stars A charming film, I wish more were like this........2007-04-12

I decided to take a chance one day and buy this used, I had been worried about watching it because there had been many used copies of the dvd(criterions no less) at my local video store for 5.99 with no one buying them for months on end. However, with a Anderson, Murray, Dafoe, and Goldbloom on board, it couldn't be that bad.
I'm glad I took the chance and bought the movie without having seen in. I really liked Anderson's previous movie the Royal Tenenbaums, and I was glad to see that in this film, he continued on making a very specific style. Although I think he has a great feel, viewers should be warned that it tends to have a rather polarizing effect(check out the other reviews on here),with not many in the middle ground. Personally, I find the look and feel of his films to have a great flair and imagination. The score is interesting as well, with the much discussed foriegn langauge versions of the Bowie songs. However, to me I think some of the creatures they came up with show the spirit of the movie. The scene that makes the movie to me is when the cast in under the sea in a small diving chamber watching a giantic "leopard shark" while a Sigur Ros track plays in the background.
Pretenious or not, who gives a damn, its a great escape from the dull world for a couple of hours that makes me happy for sure.

Ethan Hawke, fresh faced and full of determination, tackles the icy wilds and rowdy boom towns of Alaska in Disney's 1991 adaptation of Jack London's turn-of-the-century gold rush classic. Though somewhat tamed for young audiences, the story of a city kid who befriends a feral half-wolf/half-dog orphan while learning to survive the dangers of nature and man has its share of peril and rousing scenes of wilderness adventure. But the humans are upstaged by both the animals (the standoff between White Fang and a wild brown bear is a highlight) and the Alaskan landscape, from the snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes of winter to the rich green forests and whitecap rivers of summer. The scenes of dogfights and wild wolves hunting game are carefully shot to avoid bloodshed (the opening disclaimer takes pains to remind viewers that all such scenes have been simulated), but they may still be too intense for young children. Recommended for 9 and up. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

2 out of 5 stars Good movie ---but nothing like the book.......2007-05-31

I had read White Fang with my 8th graders recently and thought it might be good to compare with the movie. WOAH! Who is Jack? Where was Weedon Scott? Gray Beaver is actually kind of a nice guy in this movie. It was a good adventure movie, but if you are expecting it to be like the book, think again. It WAS good to show the students that movies aren't always accurate to the book, and that was a good lesson to teach. I would have liked this production to be truer to the novel, but not a bad movie to enjoy with the family.

5 out of 5 stars White Fang.......2007-05-12

A very well orchastrated and touching sequel to that age old classic "Call of the Wild." I loved the book and the old movie, and this has proven to be a classic in the making to match it. The actors were believable and had you right in the midst of their struggles, clashes, and victories. Heart tugging and a tear jerker at times. It is definitely a keeper and well worth to add to ones library of films.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful Surprise.......2007-04-29

I own this movie. First saw it on satellite because I love Jack London and the TIVO caught this because it is based on his novel. Even though it is different from the novel it captures the spirit of his story and as Ebert says, it is great entertainment in its own right. Anyone who loves canines is going to love this movie. Even some people I know who don't love canines, still loved the movie.

I liked it so much I bought the DVD. Excellent story, excellent soundtrack (the music is beautiful), excellent cinematography, excellent acting by both man and beast. Four stars because as like another previous reviewer, to release a movie as beautiful as this one in pan and scan instead of widescreen is a crime. Why Disney? This movie deserved widescreen. This movie is quality, maybe the best Disney live action movie, surely the best Disney live action movie I have ever seen. Good for repeated viewing at my house and well worth the purchase.

I was very pleased. Will order other movies.

2 out of 5 stars What does this have to do with Jack London's book?.......2007-01-09

I love Jack London's books and have since childhood, so it's hard for me to understand why Disney would take a classic book title and make up a new story to go under it. I re-read WHITE FANG two months ago and there is precious little in this movie that was in the book. Jack London did not write kiddie books (nor did Anna Sewell, for that matter) and I understand how difficult it would be to adapt his works to the screen and get a family rating. Even so, people who read and loved the book and expect to see an adaptation of the original classic might well be terribly disappointed. If it's a good film and a good original script, then it should be allowed its own title and the Disney writers should get the credit for the story.

5 out of 5 stars Waugh Pilgram! Ain't fer flatlanders........2007-06-23

Seriously, this is a great movie. FAR, FAR better and more accurate than "Jeremiah Johnson"... a Robert Redford movie. This movie is kinda gritty and realistic. Even down to the guns and clothing. The script might be a little better, but... it's entertaining, it's pretty much true-to-life showing the mountain man's life and last, it doesn't have that stupid 1970's hippy singing that PLAGUES "Jeremiah Johnson." It's also not chock-full of political correctness and blatherings about the evyil United States.

So, if you're interested in the fur trade era, give it a look. If you're a reenactor, you HAVE to!

5 out of 5 stars Great frontier film!.......2007-05-14

Charlton Heston and Brian Keith have great chemistry. This film is humorous and is a wonderful portrayal of life in frontier times! Like us, you'll watch it over and over again!!

4 out of 5 stars Good western.......2007-02-13

This is a comic western with the old characters we recognized for their true grit and gruff manner. Two seasoned trappers try to get their beaver plews to the Rendezvous for trade without losing their scalps to the Crow or the very aggressive Blackfoot. There's also a greenhorn thrown in the mix with big ideas for future trade that the old timers find laughable, despite the shrinking market for beaver.
The trail becomes even more treacherous when a squaw from the Blackfoot tribe that attacks them would rather stay with the two white trappers than return to her abusive husband. Heavy Eagle of the Blackfoot has no intention of allowing his women to run off with white men. His blood feud is spurred by pride rather than love for his wife, but he stops at nothing to get even with the trappers. The humor in the film was fun and something I feel is missing from some westerns. This movie is definitely a keeper for my Western collection of DVD's.

1 out of 5 stars The Mountain Men.......2007-01-19

My husband and I were very disappointed with this movie. The best way to describe it is "goofey". I figured with big names like Charlton Heston and Brian Keith (and I'm a fan of both) that this would be a good movie, but it wasn't. Every other word out of Brian Keith was G-- D--- and I mean through the entire movie..well all that we watched anyway. If you want to watch a good mountain man movie, Jeremiah Johnson is the best.
The quality of the DVD itself was great..it's just a bad movie.

4 out of 5 stars MOUNTAIN MEN MAYHEM.......2007-01-12

I loved this movie when it was released in 1980 to the big screen. Right from the start it grabs your attention with the beautiful scenery and sweeping music score supplied by Michel Legrand. There's action aplenty right from the start and lot's of humor and gratuitous violence throughout to keep your interest. It stars Charlton Heston and Brian Keith as two crusty old mountain men who get more than they bargained for when Heston's character takes an indian sqaw under his wing. The acting is plausible, the direction is well done by Richard Lang, the script is also pretty well handled by Heston's own son Fraser Clarke Heston although it is at times (most times)rather foul.
I remember seeing Chuck Heston saying in an interview that he actually regretted making this movie. Perhaps it was because instead of playing a biblical character in this movie he was actually taking the Lord's name in vain.
I am dissapointed in this dvd release because it is not in widescreen. If any movie deserves it this one does, and even though it boasts about being mastered in high definition the picture quality really sucks. Surely Columbia will release a better version with remastered picture and sound restoring this movie to the glory of it's original release. Here's hoping.

2 out of 5 stars Seems to be edited.......2007-04-14

Limp movie by today's standards, with jarring switches from locations in NY to obvious Universal studios backlot. Very TV movie in its look and overuse of extreme closeups. A view of the 60's counterculture that didn't even ring true then. I also seem to recall that when I saw this in the 60's that Susan Clark points out the actual Coogan's Bluff (a real natural landmark in NY) to Eastwood's character during their scene above the Cloisters. She tells a little story about it, tying it to the character's "bluff" about how tough he is. If I am recalling correctly, that scene has been clumsily trimmed out on this DVD. Note how in one shot Eastwood is wearing his hat, but in the very next one it is off. At that point the dialogue appears to jump from one subject to an entirely different one. Without this scene the title doesn't even make sense anymore

2 out of 5 stars 10-gallon Hat Eastwood in New York City.......2007-02-15

This is great for Eastwood lovers, unless you don't like to see him getting beaten up and bloodied (on several occasions). However, he does beat up lots of baddies in return and makes love to lots of chicks.

4 out of 5 stars Eastwood's Western Sheriff Arrests All of 1968 New York.......2007-02-05

This film has aged extremely well -- a time capsule red state/blue state story of Eastwood's Arizona deputy sheriff -- "Texas" to the hard-bitten, seen-it-all New York cops, and his foray to New York City to pick up a fugitive. Eastwood's understated comic performance is spot-on, and New York of 1968 is a bizarre, mysterious melting pot, with hookers, freaks, crazies, druggies, and all manner of miscreants -- all portrayed with a wink and a nod in Don Siegal's steady hand. The scenes at New York's famous Electric Circus, and Eastwood's reaction, are priceless.

The Lalo Schifrin soundtrack is especially strong, and Lee J. Cobb's turn as the exasperated police chief adds to the fun. Good supporting roles too by Conrad Bain and Susan Clark. All in all this film is of a piece with New York films of its time, like Frank Sinatra's The Detective, Midnight Cowboy, even The Out-of-Towners. A treat.

3 out of 5 stars Stranger in a Stranger Land.......2006-08-30

This is a "fish out of water" story. Clint Eastwood plays a deputy sheriff from rural Arizona. He is a westerner in the sense of the western movies. He is strong, confident about women and does not tolerate obstruction in any form. He has also hacked off his boss so he gets sent to New York City to extradite a prisoner. That's bad enough but this is NYC of the 60s with all of the additional strangeness brought on by that decade.

While there, he finds that picking up the prisoner is not as easy as it should be. He is bogged down by administrative procedures seeming designed to keep anyone from getting anything done. Worse, it keeps him in NYC waiting. He decides to take matters into his own hands and bluffs his way into custody of the prisoner. He is about to head back to Arizona when he gets bushwhacked and the prisoner escapes. Now he has to deal with a hostile NYCPD and track down a prisoner in very unfamiliar surroundings while the local police threaten to arrest him if he interferes any more.

This is a good but dated story. It has action but not as much as most modern movies. The chase scene seems rather tame. Still, it is about the good guy breaking the rules to bring in the bad guy. Dirty Harry would approve

Leo K Jacob (i.e. Lee J. Cobb) plays
frustrated New York Det. who tries
to get Coogan (AZ lawman) to stay in
