With refreshing intelligence, <I>A Walk to Remember</I> offers welcome relief from the recent onslaught of teen-movie crudeness. Adapted from the novel by Nicholas Sparks and transplanted from 1958 to the present day, this admirable teen romance recognizes that two 18-year-olds--Landon (Shane West) and Jamie (pop singer Mandy Moore)--can be smart, mature, and sensible about the very real love they share. He's a popular kid in the cool crowd. She's got a goody-goody reputation as the dowdy daughter of a local minister (Peter Coyote); her values and priorities aren't rooted in peer pressure, and Landon feels blessed by her self-assured nobility. Their mutual affection inevitably heads into <I>Love Story</I> territory, but the movie is honest enough to survive its own schmaltz, and its attractive cast (including Daryl Hannah as Landon's mom) embraces a tone of sincerity and mutual respect. Finally... a teen movie with teens you can admire. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars A heart-warming chick flick........2007-06-21

A Walk to Remember stars Mandy Moore and Shane West. I remember when it first came out, it was the "IT" movie to see. Even now, roughly 5 years after its initial release, teens are oogling not only over the eye candy, but also from the heartwarming storyline.

So what's this movie about? Basically, you have a popular guy, Landon, and a geeky girl, Jamie, who are obviously from completely different worlds. When the two are forced together due to a school play, things heat up between the two and they eventually fall in love. Unfortunately, something comes between them that tries to pull them apart.

So what's to like about this movie? First, I believe this was Mandy Moore's debut in acting. She does a pretty good job playing her role and Shane West does a superb job as usual. Second, this movie brings out a ton of different emotions. You feel sympathetic, you feel happy, you feel sad, and you feel the cockles of your heart warming up. A really good movie not only makes you think, but also strikes a chord with you and this movie certainly did. Third, this is just an overall entertaining film. If you've read the book, you know what's going to happen, but that won't stop you from enjoying the film.

And what's not to like? The storyline is nothing new. We've seen it with Never Been Kissed and She's All That. The ending is different from the majority of movies with the same storyline but it's still not a ground-breaking film.

If you're looking for a cute, chick flick-type movie to watch, this is a great example. But keep a tissue box handy. You might need it.

5 out of 5 stars Always Remembered.......2007-05-31

A very well written story of life in the high school years. Exactly as I remember it being when I was in school. From what Grandchildren say it still is.

A walk to remember is a story of Landon Carter, the rebellious trouble maker(Shane West)and Jamie Sullivan, the reverend's daughter (Mandy Moore), a quite good-natured girl but teased by Landon and his friends. When Landon finds himself playing the lead role in the highschool musical along side Jamie he turns to her seeking help with lines. As he spends more time with her the two become closer and closer. Jamie shares a list of life goals with Landon inspiring him to do more with his life. He begins his own list of goals. When he first learns Jamie has terminal leukemia he is shocked but then talks to his dad who pays for her home care. Landon helps Jamie complete many tasks from her list as she is too weak to do them herself. Jamie's number one is finaly completed when Landon and Jamie are married in the church where her parents were married. Jamie dies just one summer later but in that short time she had changed Landon's life.

This is one of my favorite movies! It has great charaters, story line, music, lesson...everthing about this movie is great!!! This is one of the very few movies I enjoyed more than the book!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-05-21

When i first saw this movie i was rather uneasy because most teen movie have sex and profanity, but this movie surprisingly had none of that! A very good movie for the whole family cause it teaches the real meaning of life and i liked that it had some God related parts that made me like it even more! I don't want to ruin the end for you but for sure it will make most of you cry! I cried more in this movie than in the Titanic which is famous as being a tear gerker. And you can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-04-09

this movie was incredible. it is for sure one of the most romantic movies i've ever seen. it is truely just an honest & heartwarming film. i recommend to all audiences!

A wild collection of hip actors--from Will Ferrell to Drew Barrymore to David Cross--provide voices for <I>Curious George</I>, based on the classic, gentle children's books. Ted (voiced by Ferrell, <I>Elf</I>) works at a natural history museum that's fallen on hard times. The museum director's son (Cross, <I>Arrested Development</I>) wants to turn it into a parking lot, but Ted offers to bring back a mysterious idol from Africa that's guaranteed to pull in crowds. Unfortunately, the idol turns out to be three inches tall. But Ted (who, before he heads on safari, gets outfitted in head-to-toe yellow, transforming him into the beloved Man in the Yellow Hat from the books) accidentally brings back a lonely yet irrepressible monkey, soon dubbed George. In no time at all George gets into all kinds of mischief--painting an apartment, soaring aloft with a bunch of helium-filled balloons, climbing on a dinosaur skeleton, and generally getting Ted into hot water. Older fans of the books will probably wince at the formulaic save-the-museum storyline, as well as at the obligatory love interest (Barrymore, <I>Charlie's Angels</I>) whose role is utterly passive. Jack Johnson's songs are so bland you can't remember the melodies even as you're listening to them, and the animation (an odd but not ineffective blend of two-dimensional drawing and CGI) has grossly cutified the book's illustrations, eroding their origina charm (the contrast is made sadly clear by a montage of the original drawings over the closing credits). But the basic relationship between man and monkey remains sweet, and younger kids will delight in George's innocent troublemaking. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

The heroes of 1899 are brought to life with the help of some expensive special effects in <I>The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen</I>. From the pages of Victorian literature come Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll (and his alter ego Mr. Hyde), Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, an Invisible Man, Mina Harker (from <I>Dracula</I>), and the hunter Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), all brought together to combat an evil megalomaniac out to conquer the world. Hardly an original plot, but perhaps that's fitting for a movie sewn together like Frankenstein's monster. The movie rushes from one frenetic battle to another, replacing sense with spectacle--Nemo's submarine rising from the water, a warehouse full of zeppelins bursting into flame, Venice collapsing into its own canals; flashy, dumb, and completely incoherent. Fans of the original comic book will be disappointed. Also featuring Peta Wilson, Shane West, Stuart Townsend, Richard Roxburgh, and Jason Flemyng. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

4 out of 5 stars I have to agree..........2007-05-23

With the majority so far here...this picture, panned almost to a man by the critics, was actually as enjoyable as I thought it would be before I started hearing the avalanche of negative reviews. Why did they hate this film so much?! It has NON-stop action, great art direction, good casting, (I am in love with Peta WIlson!) a nice, world-threatening plot, (probably yet another nod to Connery,) and passable special effects.

Perhaps it was the obvious hand that Marvel may have had in it...the whole movie reminds me an AWFUL lot of "Van Helsing", what with Mr. Hyde having a prominent part in it, on top of the presence of Richard Roxburgh, who played Dracula in that movie. "Van Helsing" also, in turn, bore a strong resemblance to "X-2, X-Men United". CGI effects are also a lot more obvious in Marvel's movies than they are in anybody else's, and they are here...THAT could have been a put-off...but for me, the not-so-great CGI was hidden well enough by shadows so that it wasn't as bad as it was in "The Hulk" or "Spiderman".

The group consists of: Allen Quartermain, (Connery...glad they didn't pick Richard Chamberlain,) Tom Sawyer, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Captain Nemo, (wait 'til you see the Nautilus...WOW!) and a persona de femme from "Dracula", Mina Harker, played by Ms. Wilson. Dorian Grey is along for the ride, too, but how much can you trust a character made up by Oscar Wilde?

It's great seeing Connery slug a villain and making it stick, at his age...(he's 77 now, can you believe it?) and Peta Wilson...YES!! Love that accent, love that stature, love that improvement-on-Julie-Christie thing she's got going for her....Love that car, too...I'll bet you anything either Panther Westwinds or Sbarro had something to do with that beast! That looked like a Lancia grille, too!

Anyway, there is, indeed, non-stop action! You really do root for the good guys, especially after it's revealed that the group's being conned by a surprising source, and just marvelling at the great sets and cinematography used in the film is a kick. I highly recommend this underrated little film, one that the critics made look much worse than it is!

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars--Over-the-top, ridiculous, fast paced, action adventure comic book style.......2007-04-28

I always feel you have to know what kind of movie you're about to watch so you can judge it accordingly. If it's based on a comic book it's going to be big, loud, dumb and ridiculous. If you don't go into "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" expecting Oscar-caliber work you won't be disappointed.

The movie is set in 1899. Characters that we know from the literature of the times are assembled as the League: Alan Quartermain, The Invisible Man, Dorian Gray, Captain Nemo, Tom Sawyer, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Dina Harker from Dracula. They are asked to work together to stop a man called The Phantom who is amassing a huge army and futuristic weapons to take over the world. You don't need to know much more because in the end it doesn't make any sense anyway. But why should it, it's source material is a comic book.

The movie is fast paced with some good special effects and well staged action scenes. There are also some bad effects and poorly staged action scenes, cliches aplenty and some dreadful dialog. I didn't take any of it too seriously and found myself enjoying the movie quite a bit. If you absolutely can't stand people with automatic weapons shooting at point blank range and not hitting anything or effects so overblown you can't believe them, this isn't the movie for you. On the other hand, if you can suspend your disbelief and just politely shake your head at some of the more ridiculous scenes, I would recommend "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen."

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly...decent *Spoilers*.......2007-03-21

3.5 stars. For me the movie didn't really start to be fun until after the Venice thingy. I didn't quite understand what that whole thing was about and then sighed with relief when that plot line turned out to be a ruse. I thought there was an interesting assembly of characters set in a Victorian age and I agree Dorian Gray stood out in his performance. I can't quite put my finger on what this film is missing, but I do know that it's missing something. Maybe a better explantion of bringing this assembly of people together in the first place when they, quite frankly, didn't have you in their radar to begin with. Couldn't he go about gathering what he needed from them without all this elaborate drama? Overall, this is an entertaining film and not at all as bad as I feared.

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie!!.......2007-03-17

This is another great work by Sean Connery!! The movie is really cool too~ combining differen classic novels in one. I really like how it's done. Although squeezing in a female dracula in there so there's a woman is kinda funny... =P

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Entertaining!.......2007-03-04

Ignore the critics and naysayers - Most of them wouldn't know entertainment unless it exploded in front of their face - Also, people (especially young people don't read the classics anymore - I say this and I'm only 33) - One of the best things about this movie is the use of the literary characters (Love the casting) - I've never read the comic, so I had not been influenced by it upon watching this movie - However, I have read most of the novels these characters were based upon - Fantastic to see them brought to life on the big screen! - dark, somber - perfect mood for this time in history - but i can see why this movie didn't go down well - not enough dumb action, useless bloodshed, stupid jokes, and whiny characters for the masses

Between Oscar Wilde and Boy George, Quentin Crisp was the most important gay icon in England. The TV movie <I>The Naked Civil Servant</I>, adapted from Crisp's autobiography and broadcast in 1975, had a significant social impact in the cause of gay rights, and it's easy to see why. Packed with witty aphorism but also unflinching in its portrayal of the verbal and physical abuse Crisp received for being an openly effeminate homosexual; throughout most of Crisp's life, simply being flamboyant was a political statement, one not always appreciated by other gay men who sought to pass unsuspected. The film briskly moves from when he stumbled into London's gay demimonde to his bohemian social world and career as an artist's model to a particularly superb scene when he was put on trial for solicitation. <I>The Naked Civil Servant</I> also brought the brilliant John Hurt, who played Crisp with intelligence and humanity, to wide acclaim. Hurt has since appeared in movies as diverse as <I>Alien</I>, <I>The Elephant Man</I>, <I>V for Vendetta</I>, and <I>Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone</I>, but Crisp remains a signature role for this unique actor. The fortuitous combination of Crisp and Hurt makes <I>The Naked Civil Servant</I> essential viewing. Extras on the dvd include a short television piece in which Crisp interviewed Tina Brown when she was editor of <I>Vanity Fair</I> and a sweet, reminiscing commentary by Hurt, director Jack Gold, and producer Verity Lambert. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

The Naked Civil Servant created a furor in 1975 when it premiered on PBS in North America with viewers threatening to yank their support of their local stations. It was a film ahead of its time about a man even more ahead of his time. The Naked Civil Servant is based on the autobiography of Quentin Crisp, a man struggling to live an openly flamboyant, gay lifestyle during a time when homosexuality was against the law in Britain. His outlandish behavior shocked the intolerant pre-WWII British society and provoked frequent homophobic attacks, but Crisp staunchly refused to compromise his lifestyle and went on to become a cult celebrity and an international gay icon, a 20th-Century Oscar Wilde. This colorful, heartwarming coming of age tale is by turns funny and tragic.

5 out of 5 stars John Hurt at his best!.......2007-06-10

I was delighted to see this release coming out, so I pre-ordered. Had some concerns, considering how long ago the BBC production aired in the US. I know I was in college, and I was very impressed with John Hurt's performance.

Seeing this some 27 years later, it still impresses me. My wife saw this and exclaimed that John Hurt really is a good actor. She now understands why I attempt to see every movie he is in. Even if it is just a walk-on part.

Full screen format was disappointing, but the print quality is very good. Sound is Mono, but then I would expect that of a 27 year old TV movie.

By the way, the subject matter is handled with as much grace as possible, but it is blunt. The court room scene makes the message.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great page to screen adaptations........2004-12-02

"The Naked Civil Servant" has long been one of very favorite books, and now Jack Gold has brought that story to life in this superb film. Quentin Crisp was a pioneer of the 'silence = death' philosophy adopted by the gay rights movement in the 80's and 90's. An uninhibited homosexual in a time when it was illegal, Crisp never lost his wit or his dignity dispite living through poverty, malicious prosecution and physical abuse. John Hurt - long a favorite for his work in "10 Rellington Place," "Midnight Express," "The Elephant Man," "Love and Death on Long Island" and "Scandal" - won a much deserved Best Actor award from the British Film Academy for his work here. He has never been better. A wonderful and inspiring story of one man's triumph over adversity.

5 out of 5 stars "Do you intend to spend your whole life admiring yourself?".......2004-06-25

"The Naked Civil Servant" is based on the life of Quentin Crisp, and in the opening sequence, the real Quentin Crisp makes the introduction that in a film "even the worst is at least better than life." Crisp led a remarkable life--not always a very happy one--but the film manages to transport us beyond the actual events of Crisp's life, and instead concentrates on the things Crisp said and the things Crisp stood for. This is largely accomplished by John Hurt's outstanding, performance as Crisp. Hurt perfectly captures the essence of Crisp and delivers his words with an even, detached and amusing style. Crisp, who described himself as a 'flamboyant homosexual' was born in 1908 to middle-class parents. It becomes clear that Quentin is 'different' and his exasperated father really never knows quite what to do with Quentin. Quentin seems to lack ambition, and he'd rather stand in front of a mirror admiring himself than go out and find a job. Quentin abruptly leaves home and becomes a male prostitute, and eventually--an artist's model.

Crisp accepted the labels placed on him by society (moral perversion), and he dealt with it--never once offering excuses, apologizing or attempting to gain acceptance. Crisp was simply a remarkable person who showed fortitude and amazing moral courage. He was constantly humiliated, brutalized and the subject of wanton cruelty, yet he maintained dignity in spite of humanity's frequent attempts to belittle him. The film contains two outstanding segments that illustrate Crisp's approach to society. One segment occurs when Crisp encounters army recruitment officials during WWII, and the second segment covers Crisp's trial.

The film follows Crisp's life up until 1975. During his lifetime, Quentin Crisp was called "the heir of Oscar Wilde", and this film really illustrates Crisp's ironic, detached humour. If you enjoyed the film, I also recommend Crisp's autobiography "The Naked Civil Servant" and "Stately Homo: A Celebration of the Life of Quentin Crisp."--displacedhuman

5 out of 5 stars where is the DVD version???.......2004-02-29

This brilliant piece of work should long since have been released on DVD. And "An evening with Quentin Crisp" (now OP even in VHS) should also be DVDized!

5 out of 5 stars Top of the "A" list.......2003-10-23

This film was an excellant mix of outstanding acting, fantastic script and overall an uplifting story. I totally enjoyed the film and could not even start to tell you why without a mile long list. I would strongly suggest that you buy it and you will understand. This is an excellant investment. The truth is even better than fiction and I now have a new found understanding and respect for Q. Crisp. One of the strongest persons, that I know of in the past 100 years. Be inspired!! Be grateful for the times we live in. A tool to help find pride in the victories of the past.

<I>Whatever It Takes</I> initially seems little more than another comedy with impossibly attractive teenagers trying to get into each other's pants. Ryan (Shane West) is a bit of a geek with eyes for the school sex bomb, Ashley (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe), which induces cringing in his neighbor and best friend, Maggie (Marla Sokoloff), a cute intellectual girl. But popular jock Chris (James Franco) has his eye on Maggie, and he offers to help Ryan win Ashley if Ryan will help Chris woo Maggie. So begins a two-headed variation on <I>Cyrano de Bergerac</I>; Ryan composes soulful e-mails for Chris, and Chris advises Ryan to treat Ashley like dirt, which seems to be the only way to get her attention.<P>At first, neither finds it easy to change their ways; Chris comes on too strong, and Ryan is too nervous to be a jerk. But as they start to succeed, Ryan begins to see Maggie in a new light and wonders if he's pursuing the right girl. Which could all be very standard and shallow, but as the story unfolds the movie examines staying true to yourself and finding self-worth in surprisingly trenchant and unpreachy ways. Which is not to say that <I>Whatever It Takes</I> is high-minded--everyone's excessively good-looking and prone to wearing tight or revealing clothing, and there's a subplot about a kid who aspires to achieve school immortality through a topnotch prank. But the movie offers more than you might expect, which sets it apart from many of the recent swarm of teen flicks. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

3 out of 5 stars James Franco in Whatever it takes.......2007-01-12

This movie sure is a 90's teen movie. But if you like she's all that and all the other 90's teen movie you'll like it. If you like James Franco then you'll also like the movie. Its way back when he was young and there are good bouns features.

4 out of 5 stars 2 Reasons To Get This DVD.......2005-10-22

This is your typical teen/chick flick, but it is still funny and even guys will enjoy it. But the main two reasons to get this movie: Marla Sokoloff and Jodi Lyn O'Keefe. These girls are certainly easy on the eyes and make for excellent viewing. Collin Hanks also makes what I think is his movie debut in this film.

4 out of 5 stars Slightly Better than Average Teen Exploitation Moview.......2005-05-04

It's a teen exploitation movie. That means you already know the plot. Gut has hots for girl and is willing to do "whatever it takes" to get her, even be incredibly stupid. That's what the genre is all about so people should not be surprised when that happens. In essence, guys, especially young ones, tend to do hilarious things to satisfy their...desires. This movie goes a step better.

Synopsis: one of the school geeks is infatuated by the head cheerleader but lives next door to the proverbial "beautiful girl next door". A cousin of the head cheerleader, a jock, wants to add the "girl next door" to his scorecard. The two guys get togther to make each other's fantasies come true. Along the way, the "nice ones" learn important lessons and the "not so nice" ones get their comeuppance. Its as predictable as the sunset. It's still funny.

Where this movie does its best is in the way it charactures the popular people. They are usually depicted as shallow and vapid. They still are but are taken to new heights of idiocy. It's fun to see them get taken down a peg by some nice kids who find each other.

Don't expect any education from this film. Its strictly for laughs. Its not the best but it is certainly entertaining.

2 out of 5 stars Worst teen romance flick I have seen...........2005-02-09

Whatever it Takes...

This movie was not even worth my time in watching it. I even heard it was so good I bought it and I hate it! I love teen/romance movies but this one was not one I will ever watch again and struggled to get through the first time!

Reading the synopsis will let you know just what the plot of this movie is. My thoughts skip this one all together.

4 out of 5 stars How low will they go to get the girls of their dreams?.......2004-06-19

It has taken me a while to get around to checking out this 2000 teen romantic comedy for the simply reason that when it came out I had actually finished writing a movie script for the first time and it was a teen romantic comedy entitled "Whatever It Takes" (using the song from Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Go's first solo album as inspiration) and I was crushed by cruel fate once again taunting me. But I was having a good week so I thought I could stand to watch this and not curse the heavens. Of course I somehow missed out on the 1999 "Whatever It Takes" which had Andrew Dice Clay and Fred Williamson in a film about undercover cops checking out steroid use by body builders, the 1998 animated short by director Joanna Quinn, the 1993 sexploitation comedy by director Michael Quarles, and the 1986 drama starring Martin Balsam. Gee, if only I had stopped crying long enough to find out that films were coming out with this title every year I could still done nothing but felt better about it.

This particular version of "Whatever It Takes" was hurt by the idea that it was a modern version of "Cyrano de Bergerac," the way "Ten Things I Hate About You" is an updated "Taming of the Shrew" and "Cruel Intentions" is a teenage version of "Dangerous Liaisons." However, while we do have a version of the famous balcony scene, there is a big difference in that this time around the scene is missing the pivotal irony that a man who is in love with a woman gives another man the words to woe her (although the scene is a pivotal moment in the film). So the "Cyrano" connection is a minor one, especially compared to Steve Martin's "Roxanne."

The situation is that Ryan Woodman (Shane West) has the hots for the school's reigning sex goddess, Ashley Grant (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe). Ryan is a good kid who has the twin misfortunes of playing the accordion and having a mother (Julia Sweeney) who is the school nurse. Meanwhile, the campus bad boy jock, Chris Campbell (James Franco) wants to add good girl Maggie Carter (Marla Sokoloff) to his list of conquests. Ryan and Maggie are nextdoor neighbors whose bedroom balconies almost touch and who have been best friends almost since birth, while Chris happens to be Ashley's cousin. So Chris comes up with the great idea that he and Ryan can help each other get the girl that they want.

The only real problem with this story line is that Ryan falls way behind the audience in terms of realizing the truth about both Ashley and Maggie. The cinematic reference I flashed on during this film was actually "10." But if Ryan is slow on the uptake this "Whatever It Takes" gets redeemed because West and Sokoloff really do come across as nice kids and the pivotal scenes are the best in the film, which really saves it. The homage to the "Cyrano" balcony scene is probably the best in the film, the grand gesture required of Ryan turns out to be an elegantly simple example of public humiliation in the name of true love, and Maggie carries off a nice case of the requisite comeuppance. That is not bad for any sort of teen romantic comedy, even one with a title for which lots of people apparently like to write scripts.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fun teen movie.......2007-05-10

I didn't have great expectations for this movie. I figured it would be just another teen movie. However, "Get Over It" totally went above and beyond my expectations.

Kirsten Dunst is gorgeous as Kelly, the true talent in the play. Shane West plays the villian incredibly well, and although you love him, you really want him to lose in the end. Martin Short is hilarious and a laugh a minute, and the supporting cast all do a very good job of keeping you entertained. Ben Foster does a great job as the slacker trying to win his girlfriend back.

I truly would love to see a live showing of "A Midsummer Night's Rocking Eve" if ever available. From the random songs to the entertaining dances put together by Dr. Desmond Forrest Oakes, I'm sure it would prove to be a very entertaining night.

Watch this movie, and then watch it again. It is funnier each time you watch it.

3 out of 5 stars A Decent Teen Movie.......2007-04-08

Get Over It is a cute, yet fairly predictable, teen movie. The good cast helps make it different from the other teen movies. What it lacked in plot originality, it make up for in the look and feel of the movie. I think it would have been a better movie if had been from Kirsten Dunst's (who shined brighter than any of the others) point of view,, instead of Ben Foster's, who is good in his role too. Still, if you are looking for a cute, fun, mindless movie to watch, this is a good one to pick. If only to see the costumes, set, the performance of Kirsten Dunst (and her singing!) and Vitamin C at the end. 3.75/5 stars

5 out of 5 stars Get Over It.......2005-07-20

It is ok for preteens it is a musical, funny. I would recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Oddly charming.......2005-07-12

While there are moments where this film gets bogged down in the traditional teen comedy pitfalls- gross-out humor and over-the-top sexual antics - it really is very clever and funny. Martin Short's name-dropping, weirdo drama coach reminds me of waaay too many people I knew in college. Shane West's take on an accent-faking recovering boy band member is hilarious. And, Lord help me, I even liked some of the musical numbers. Some of them.
I don't know if I'd let my tweenage daughter watch it, but it's certainly safer than "American Pie" or "Scary Movie."

5 out of 5 stars A hilarious teen comedy.......2005-05-09

I'm not a big fan of teen comedies, because they usually tend to be the same. So what made me buy GET OVER IT! without even seeing it? I have no idea. But I'm really glad that I did, and I fell in love with the movie after watching it for the first time.

GET OVER IT! is a great mix of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and a fun story about a group of friends (much like "10 Things I Hate About You"). Berke's girlfriend Allison just broke up with him, and he's determined to get her back, especially when she starts dating the new guy in school. Berke thinks that he'll win her over if he decides to be in the school musical, A Midsummer's Rockin' Eve. Of course, the movie also has parties, gross-out jokes, practically naked women, and lots of sex talk, but somehow, it ends up being hysterical.

Highlights of GET OVER IT! are definately the opening credits, with Vitamin C "performing" the song 'Love Will Keep Us Together;' Martin Short, who is absolutely hysterical as Dr. Desmond Forrest Oates, the drama teacher; the Martin Short outtakes, which show how he improvised almost all of his lines; and the music videos/musical performances. Highly recommended to fans of "10 Things I Hate About You" or "American Pie."

Customer Reviews:

When he's not crafting lavish Hollywood features like <I>Rain Man</I>, <I>Bugsy</I>, or the misbegotten <I>Sphere</I>, Barry Levinson occasionally makes highly personal films (the so-called "Baltimore series" of <I>Diner</I>, <I>Tin Men</I>, <I>Avalon</I>, and <I>Liberty Heights</I>). The latter, a 1999 release that disappeared all too soon from theaters, finds the aging Levinson working in a vein of pure memory: lyrical, mystical, forgiving. Ben Foster and Adrien Brody star as the middle-class Jewish sons of a shrewd burlesque operator (Joe Mantegna) running a petty numbers racket on the side. Set in the mid-'50s, the story finds the boys restless within the confines of their tight-knit community and unwilling to be restrained or rejected by anti-Semitic barriers or other racial and class prejudices.

Before the film is over, the young men's pursuit of the unattainable will include a troubled WASP princess (Carolyn Murphy) to a remarkable African American girl (Rebekah Johnson) kept on her family's short tether. Levinson provides generous glimpses of a nation undergoing re-invention, from white discovery of rock & roll to racial integration in classrooms. There's lots of broad satire (Jewish shock at being fed something called "luncheon meat" by a Gentile friend), some delicate comedy of manners (a touchingly chaste relationship between two key characters), suspense (a kidnapping), and shattering passages of pure yearning. Levinson is in top form with <I>Liberty Heights</I>, his instincts acute, his skills at the service of beauty, his purpose clear. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars An excellent film that is often overlooked.......2006-07-24

A Barry Livingstone production, which is semi-autobiographical. The story centers on a Jewish family living in Baltimore at the height of anti-Semitism. Other racial issues emerge, such as the introduction of African American students into White schools. Despite the `weighty' content, this movie is actually a comedy, and there are several moments that are truly funny. Benefits from a great cast, including Adrian Brody - before his `mainstream' emergence.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2006-06-10

A movie about a Jewish family in Baltimore, Maryland in the mid-1950s. One of my favorite movies.

5 out of 5 stars Good all around movie.......2006-05-20

Everyone who's seen this movie knows what happens to the dad(Joe Mantegna) at the end. If you havent seen it- dont read it ahead---------

Anyway, the end is so sad when the father gets arrested and charged with crimes he never commited, and sentenced to 8 to 10 years, which he doesnt live through. ANd its even more sad because its so realistic. The police were evil back then, just like they're sick, evil people now. They are racist, they are immoral, they're ignorant, brainwashed, sick people. Its amazing how people can look back on an era and realize how corrupt the cops were in it, but then think that nowadays they arent. They are still horrible. There are countless people getting put in jail for no reason today, just like in this movie. Our country has numerous immoral laws- most glaring drug prohibition. It is immoral to put someone in jail, where they will be raped, beaten up(often by gaurds), and forced to live in torturous conditions. Its immoral to put any one in these conditions for commiting a non violent crime. Its absolutely immoral. Therefore, any person who becomes a cop and enforces these laws has to be an immoral person. In a hundred years(hopefully much sooner), the majority of the population will consider our imprisonment of drug users and sellers as just as sick and misguided as we do the imprisonment for homosexuality, miscegenation, drinking alcohol(during alcohol probition), and countless other laws we consider ridiculous and evil today.

But anyway, the movie is very good. Im not jewish, but i think everyone can relate to the characters and the lives they live. I love the 1950's and 60's culture- the cars and the parties and the soda founatain shops and all that, and this film is steeped in that kind of 50's nostalgia. It isnt the kind of insipid, mindless film that treats the time period as some idealized era steeped in goodness and innocence. It portrays it as it was- a cool time period but one absolutely amok with discrimination, paranoia, racism, conservativism, and corrupt authority figures- politicians like McCarthey, and cops like the ones in the movie- in these ways the 50's were a time period that is much like the last ten years here in america- one of innocence on the surface but discrinimation and corruption and evil underneath. One has only to watch the TV show cops or listen to various politicians on C-Span(of both parties)to see this.

But yeah, i dutifully reccomend the movie, its not fantastic, its kind of unique in that it doesnt really adhere to a three act format or anything, but it is well made, extremely well acted, and an accurate, well rounded portrait of both the positive and negative aspects of the 1950's in America.

4 out of 5 stars Just barely got 4 stars -- here's why.......2006-01-30

Story: Joe Mantegna, Bebe Neuwirth, Adrien Brody, and Ben Foster portray the Kurtzmann family, a Jewish family, in the 1955 suburbs of Baltimore. As the father runs a burlesque show (the legitimate family business), he also runs a numbers racket. Meanwhile, the older son falls in love with a non-Jewish blonde, who is outwardly perfect but actually very troubled. The younger son, portrayed by Ben Foster, falls in love with a Black girl (Rebekah Johnson), who is in the first group of Black students integrated into their school. Then, the world begins to crumble when Orlando Jones wins big in the numbers racket, and Mr. Kurtzmann and Company don't have the cash to pay off.

Why I gave it four stars: Ben Foster and Rebekah Johnson are completely likeable, cute, funny, charming, and realistically wonderful. The story is replete with the cultural and ethnic clashes that were rife in that era, but none of it is overdone, underdone, or trivialized. Some of the music is very good, especially the scene near the end, as everything is falling apart for the elder Kurtzmann, while the burlesque tune "It's Over" plays.

Why it doesn't get the fifth star: This is a good character study, but it meanders and drifts quite a bit. For the first half of the movie, I kept expecting something to happen, and trying to figure out if the story was actually going anywhere at all. Also, from the other reviews, it appears that others found this film to be funnier than I did. There were two somewhat funny scenes (when Foster and his friends try to analyze an anti-Semetic and racist sign, instead of being incensed by it; when Foster and his friends very creatively protest the exclusion of Jews from a local beach). Oh, and Adrien Brody added nothing to this film, in my opinion.

Bottom line: This is a good, likeable film, weak on action but strong on characterizations. Ben Foster, Rebekah Jonhson, and Joe Mantegna were excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent film, valuable history lesson..........2005-04-11

A lot of Americans---especially the younger generations---are breathtakingly ignorant of their own very recent history, and films like "Liberty Heights" are invaluable for reminding us that no, this country has never been a utopian paradise of freedom as current day simpletons (read: George W. Bush and all his right wing partisan prostitutes like Rush Limbaugh, etc.) would have us believe.

The idea is not to fixate on the past but to use it as a guidepost towards the future---the kind of racist and anti-semitic world that "Liberty Heights" portrays has abated on many fronts but is far from vanquished, and all this progress did not magically arise but was the fruit of the blood sweat and tears of many principled and brave individuals over the course of the last several decades. Many battles have been won but the war is not over by a long shot.

Aside from social history, Levinson's film is also stirring entertainment: he has assembled a very strong cast, with an excellent script and masterful camera direction. "Liberty Heights" does not have the grand epic sweep of "Avalon" but is deals more directly with racial and ethnic tensions in 1950s Baltimore without falling into the usual cliches and sensationalistic traps that such socially conscious films (see "Grand Canyon" or recent Spike Lee movies) often stoop to. This is no cheap Hollywood tear-jerker but an honest, balanced and very mature work---probably explains why it tanked at the box office.

3 out of 5 stars Love it for the dancing.......2006-05-09

Alrighty so this isn't exactly the best movie when it comes to the story, but at certain points it is definately a tear jerker...I didn't like the relationship that the two girls had with eachother...I kept thinking to myself, why are they friends? It was just odd. And I also didn't like how the best-friend takes the prima dancer's spot and Larissa Olynik didn't have any ANGRY emotion...it was kind of unrealistic in that sense, but don't get me wrong...I don't think it's a bad movie...maybe because I am obsessed with any movie that has to do with dance (even Bring it on). The good things about this movie are the dance scenes...they're incredible so if you're into dance then I suggest watching it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.. Great Music and Dancing.. .......2006-04-01

..But not the best movie I've ever seen. It can be a little depressing watching this wonderful.. perfect.. prima ballerina.. disappear.. dying of cancer. I LOVE the song that larissa's character dances to foe her Julliard audition. It is very inspirational.

3 out of 5 stars Good for dancers only..........2005-11-07

This movie didn't develop the characters very well. The storyline was rather weak and you couldn't help but feel that the two main characters weren't as close as the writers wanted them to appear to be. As for the dance scenes...EXCELLENT! As a dancer and choreographer, I will buy this movie as a point of reference only. If you're into strong storylines and well developed characters, don't bother. But if you're looking for ideas artistically for dancing, it's a "must have."

1 out of 5 stars Bad Movie--Read the books!.......2005-10-05

I saw the movie before I read the books so then I had an idea what it was about, but the movie was so different from the books. The books are so full of emotion and they really are alot better than the movie...I wouldn't watch the movies again but I'd definitely read the books. They are great books. I wish I had a relationship that Julie and Sammie have. Well, I hope this helped! :)
Read the books! Way better!

1 out of 5 stars If you loved the book..........2005-09-22

...then please, do yourself a favor and stay far away from the movie. I will never understand why filmmakers obtain the rights to novels like "A Time For Dancing", only to create movies that deviate so far from the book that they shouldn't even be allowed to carry the same name. It is just tragic what was done to this beautiful story. So many things, big and small, were changed from the book, and in this case change is NOT good.

What made the novel so special was primarily the friendship between Julie and Samantha. They were more than best friends, they were a part of each other, and that came through the pages of the book so clearly that I was envious of what they had together. The movie turned their relationship into a sorry case of hero worship on Samantha's part, while Julie needed Sam only to tell her how wonderful she was - something the movie Sam accuses her of. In the book, the girls' friendship was strengthened by their shared passion for dancing, and both of them eloquently expressed what it meant to them. But here, Julie is the one with talent, while Samantha doesn't seem to care much but only dances because Julie does. They even reversed the girl's physical appearances by having Julie be a blond and Samantha a brunette.

The whole spirit of "A Time For Dancing" is destroyed in a cheesy, poorly written disease of the week type film that apparently went direct to video, and deservedly so. Please don't waste your time. Read the book (and it's sequel) by Davida Wills Hurwin instead.
