The 1979 sequel to The Apple Dumpling Gang reunites Tim Conway and Don Knotts as thieves with hearts of gold, this time helping out a soldier (Tim Matheson) whose commander (Harry Morgan) is being undermined by a villainous lieutenant. The film is for kids, but the adult-heavy plot takes this movie in a different direction than its predecessor, which focused on three adorable orphans. The slapstick comedy is good, and supporting cast, Morgan, Matheson, Ruth Buzzi and Jack Elam, are enjoyable, but the freshness of the first film is missing. --Tom Keogh
Description
There's more trouble afoot as The Apple Dumpling Gang (Don Knotts and Tim Conway) can't stop causing trouble -- and laughs -- even when they give up their life of crime! First the ditsy duo is accused of bank robbery as they try to deposit a check. Then they join the U.S. Cavalry and wind up in the stockade for inadvertently blowing up their fort. Although they escape this mess, the witless team who could never shoot straight still can't seem to succeed in going straight. It's riotous, raucous fun as THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG RIDES AGAIN!

Excellant.......2007-05-07
This is an all time favorite movie ever. I is a clean family orient movie. Not one inapproptiate scene and not one vulgar or curse word is used. It is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Highy recommend it to anyone looking for a clean funny movie
NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST ONE.......2007-02-25
This is the sequel of the first movie that was made in 1975 and that was The Apple Dumpling Gang. In 1979 The Apple Dumpling Gangs Rides Again starring Tim Conway as Amos Tucker, Don Knotts as Theodore Olevie and Tim Matheson as Private Jeff Reed. Those two bumbling outlaws Theodore and Amos are broke and down on their luck. So they decide to try to deposit a check in the local bank only to be accused of trying to rob it. While trying to escape they run into legendary Marshall Wooly Bill Hitchcock. With Hitchcock on their trail the two bumbling outlaws decide to enlist in the Army. Enters Private Jeff Reed who trying to figure out whose stealing guns from the Army surplus. After getting in all kinds of trouble Amos and Theodore end up in the stockade. Although they escape this mess, the witless team who could never shoot straight still can't seem to succeed in going straight. It's riotous, raucous fun as THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG RIDES AGAIN! I saw the first one and I don't think this was as good. However with Tim Conway and Don Knotts together you can't go wrong so I'm giving this picture 8 weasel stars.

<I>The Reivers</I>, based on a William Faulkner novel, is a spirited comedy-drama starring Steve McQueen in a rare character part as Boon Hoggenbeck, a ne'er-do-well, turn-of-the-century Mississippi farm hand and cousin of 11-year-old naif Lucius McCaslin (Mitch Vogel). The arrival of a handsome new automobile purchased by Lucius' grandfather, Boss McCaslin (a golden performance by Will Geer), causes an uproar when Boon and another cousin, Ned McCaslin (Rupert Crosse), who is half African American, vie to drive the vehicle around town. Boss's departure by train for a funeral gives Boon, Ned, and Lucius an opportunity to drive in style to Memphis, where young McCaslin's eyes are opened to a larger world of hard-core racism, prostitution, corruption, and the tyranny of the powerful over the vulnerable. In short order, Lucius finds his innate decency and integrity lessen the sting of disillusionment and helplessness. Director Mark Rydell (<I>On Golden Pond</I>) keeps things brisk and breezy, but never loses sight of the long shadow of adulthood that blots out Lucius' innocence. Presented in widescreen. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Description
Based on the novel by William Faulkner, THE REIVERS tells the story of a young boy who leaves home and sets out on a journey with his best friend and Boon Hogganbeck (McQueen), his family's handyman. During the trip from Jefferson to Memphis, the trio learns some valuable life lessons.

The Reivers starring Steve McQueen.......2006-11-10
The Reivers is a wonderful film, suitable for the entire family. It has funny and touching moments and as in many other films, includes life lessons. Steve McQueen isn't half bad either!
John Steinbeck's - "the Reivers".......2006-09-14
First time I saw this movie was the spring of 1970 - in a theatre that I was the projectionist. We played this movie for a week. Right at first, I wasn't sure if I was either going to be bored with a movie and title that I never heard of, or might be surprised. It was the latter. I was massively impressed with Steve McQueen's performance as Boon Hoggenbeck, along with the narrative by Burgess Meredith (in which 10 yrs later on PBS stations. Meredith was in a concert of sorts and read the story of this same novel). The way the film was made - with the "Yellow Winton Flyer" as the basis of the movie, the way Boon made the boy lie to his grandpa - all of that what made this movie so memoriable. I managed to grab a copy of this movie when it broadcast on public tv on video, but a pretty sloppy copy to be had.. Now, just glad that it finally made it to DVD and in the WideScreen edition that it solely deserved to be viewed in. OH..one thing that I forgot..John Williams did the music for this and one can almost hear what would be coming from this composer in the coming years..
"I just want to pay my dollar and have some fun.".......2006-08-12
This Norman Rockwell snapshot of turn-of-the-century Mississippi has aged better than expected. I remember this being such a grand adventure on its theatrical release, now its more of a moderately paced nostalgic curio, but good wholesome family entertainment nonetheless.
Steve McQueen plays Boon Hogganbeck, an adopted stray that was taken in by the local Big Daddy played by the inimitable Will Geer known simply as "Boss." Boon is assigned to watch over the Boss' grandson Lucius, but Boon has been around the block a few times, and his testosterone goes into warp drive when the Boss has a spanking new Winton Flyer delivered on the inbound train.
While Boon is ardently watching over his new toy, another "family" member Ned who just happens to be a descendant of slaves AND Boss McCanlis' own grandaddy, takes off in the Winton Flyer causing general mayhem and destruction all over town before accidentally bringing this new horseless wagon to a stop. as punishment, Boss and the family leave town for a funeral, and consign 11 year old Lucius to the care of Boon, who has the Memphis city limits on his mind. Once safely out of town, Boon and Lucius concoct a story that is told to all the local family members assuring their safe gettaway, then off they go only to find later that lunatic Ned has stowed away in the back seat, setting the stage for a raucous adventure that had been largely forgotten over the past 30 years.
A terrific supporting cast with Michael Constantine as the owner of uh "The House", and Sharon Farrell as the...er object of Boon's affection. This movie is a delight for the family, and any serious DVD collector as the original brilliance of the sets and Mississippi Delta scenery has been fully restored with this beautiful widescreen transfer, and the 5.1 audio remastering is much better than the original release. All in all I would have to say this film classic deserves 5 Melons.
A wonderful original music soundtract.......2006-02-19
I agree with many of the other reviewers that this is a very well made film. It has one additional overlooked attribute -- it has a marvelous music soundtract and was the first film score written by John Williams, who went on to write scores for Star Wars and many more films.
An American classic..........2005-12-23
I don't know what to say that hasn't been said before, but this is one of the most well-made films of 1969. Period detail is well-presented, acting is excellent, wonderful Panavision widescreen makes this DVD a treasure. William Faulkner wasn't known for his lightness of heart, but this precious memoir shows love, spirit and excitement that sets this film aside. I won't blab away the plot, but Steve McQueen, at the height of his career, is having a ball in a fine performance. Sharon Farrell is so lovely; where did her career go? Mitch Vogel, as young Lucius, gives one of the best kid performances ever; I hate bad kid-actors. Where did his career go? And the most auspicious debut performance came from Oscar-nominated Rupert Crosse, knowing everything, wanting to be included, causing the most trouble, and, ultimately, saving the day. Best in the film! And where did his career go? There's also the great Juano Hernandez, and a really great performance by a horse. And it's always good to see Ruth White, the most reliable character actress since Jane Darwell. Non-obtrusive narration by Burgess Meredith is a plus. The odds seem insurmountable, but they all emerge victorious and young Lucius has life-affirming experiences; shocking, painful and ultimately exciting. And memorable. This film is nothing but fun, and I enjoy it a lot. 1969 brought about some magnificent films: Midnight Cowboy, Anne of the Thousand Days, They Shoot Horses Don't They, Butch Cassidy...and The Reivers is right up there with the best of 'em.

Pure nostalgia.......2007-03-08
Just brings back memories of childhood. Get this one rather than the 'Roy Rogers Theatre' version. No idle chat or cuts. Lovely!
The Real Thing.......2006-09-10
The children of the 1940's loved Roy Rogers. He was the leading box-office cowboy for 10 years. However times were slower then. "The Little Rascals / Our Gang" series of the 1930's is a wonderful series, loved by children and adults of the time; but also made when times were slower. Children and adults today, may not have the patience and appreciation for the charm of "Roy Rogers" and the old "Little Rascals".
Roy Rogers was everything in real life that he plays in the movies. You like Roy Rogers films; if you like Roy. The stories are pleasant, and hold your attention; but not as exciting compared to today's special effects. Many of his films have similar plot style. Some of his stories, like the sheriff being crooked, with a gang of deputies that robs every gold shipment from the mines, with the town helpless, except for the arrival of the hero, seemed far-fetched. However, I later read a historical biography that told this same true story. It was true. Reality is sometimes stranger than fiction.
Roy was the best, in real life and on film, he was the best singer, always some good songs, the best yodeler,(he yodels in his songs in a couple films), he had true close, life-long, friendships with many of his on-screen friends, he was a great shot, and a real hunter, best outfits, his horse, which he owned in real life, did lots of tricks, his hard to win love, Dale Evans, took some effort for him to win in real life, but became a true and romantic love, and his wife. Roy was quite the athlete, he could walk for an hour on his hands. Roy was a good guy in real life, visiting children's hospitals throughout all the States.
Reading about Roy and Dale's off-screen lives, in their great book, "Happy Trails", makes their films endearing. The book tells how Dale was not at first interested in the real, cowboy, Roy; because she wanted to be a glamorous, city, singer, (it is best to read it) however, in summary, Roy does save her in a real life, adventure, incident, sweeping her off her feet. Their romance on-screen plays so interesting; because of their true romance off-screen.
I like the "Happy Trails Theatre" versions best. (This is such a version). A before and after segment, made many years later, is hosted by Roy and Dale, in their later years. They always have a guest.
The "Dont Fence Me In" song in this film is a good song.
I have seen 40 Roy Rogers films, and liked them all. Roy and Dale were good people, of an era gone by, the era of Walt Disney and Shirley Temple. Roy's films, not found here, can be found on RoyRogers dot commmmmm. "The Television Collection Vol.2" of Roy's has excellent songs, with guests, and is a pleasant surprise.
2/3 of perhaps the best and funniest Roy Rogers movie.......2004-07-24
Don't Fence Me is a 5-star Roy Rogers-Dale Evans movie which runs 71 minutes (B&W). This Happy Trails Theatre version cuts out about 19 minutes from the original movie. (An introduction and closing remarks with Roy and Dale done for TV in the 1980's adds about 12 minutes, but the film itself runs about 49 minutes in this eviscerated Happy Trails incarnation.)
The original version of Don't Fence Me In became available in 1998 on Republic VHS AIBN B00000EZWW. The audio on the Happy Trails DVD reviewed here is cleaner, raising hopes for an authentic DVD restoration of the whole film at some point. The 2 stars for this DVD are for better-than-nothing and the audio improvement. However, since songs such as Along the Navajo Trail have been edited out, along with much of the comedy--a 13 minute continuous segement is missing-- much of the benefit of better audio is lost. Get the Republic (not the Happy Trails) VHS instead for a delightful 1945 matinee classic.
The Best Roy Rogers Video.......2004-01-08
This video is probibly the best Roy Rogers video there is. Dale Evans is an Eastern reporter/photographer who goes west to find the true story of the long dead Wild Cat Kelly. She meets Roy and Gabby and messes things up for them, but in the end everything works out. Roy and Dale have some funny scenes together and Gabby does a wonderful job. Some of the great songs include Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Along the Navajo Trial and the title song by Cole Porter .
Comments on Don't Fence Me In.......2000-02-10
The quality of this video is very good from both visual and sound aspects. In addition this is a full length version with a running time of over 70 minutes as opposed to the 54 minute TV version found in some earlier video releases. This is one of the very best Roy Rogers films. An outstanding performance as the retired outlaw Wildcat Kelly by "Gabby" Hayes adds considerably to the value of this film. This is a must for Roy Rogers' fans

The tranquility of a small Texas town is ruined when an enormous rear-projection lizard begins to terrorize the place! At first, the adults dismiss the kids' hysterics as nonsense. The sheriff is helpless and the adults fail miserably to defeat the thing, so it's up to the teenagers to take it on. Though this movie relies a little too heavily on plot and characters and not enough on giant lizards, it's still a fun slice of '50s camp. The lead character (played by Don Sullivan) sings some wildly inappropriate and goofy songs for some unintended comic relief. Rock & roll, hot rods, teenagers, huge monsters... all the elements are in place for this faintly ridiculous '50s funfest. <I>--Jerry Renshaw</I>

CAMP CLASSIC!!!.......2007-02-12
BUY THE IMAGE VERSION!!!
Nice, clean clear version of this classic involving teenagers, sock-hops, hot-rods, & a GIANT GILA MONSTER that pushes it's smooching head through the barn dance wall. Nitro-city!!!!
This is the absolutely BEST version of this film out there (& I have several).
Co-billed with THE KILLER SHREWS this was a double-feature to die for!!!
STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Attack of the Defenseless Gila Monster!.......2006-12-31
This movie is worth watching for several reasons. First, this movie actually had a somewhat plausible plot. Second, many of the Gila monster scenes were well done. Third, Fred Graham and Shug Fisher are in this movie; more on them in a moment.
There were many movies made for drive-in theaters that featured teenagers in weak plots with a poorly costumed actor as the monster. These movies were cheesy, but many of the teens that went to the drive-in were not really there to see the movie anyway, so everyone was happy. However, some of these movies actually tried hard to present a relatively coherent story and featured a plausible monster. This movie is one of those.
The monster in this case is a huge Gila monster. The movie glosses over the source of the monster, but the movie uses a genuine Gila monster on various miniature sets that generally match the full-sized locations in appearance. My only disappointment was that the Gila monster never appeared in the same frame as any of his victims.
Gila Monsters make poor actors. In one scene I could see that someone was pushing the Gila monster forward because sand was piling up in front of the Gila monster's legs. In another scene the Gila monster breaks through a wall, but the Gila monster appeared more enthusiastic about getting unstuck than breaking through the wall. I felt sorry for the Gila monster.
Our human actors are principally teenagers. The teenagers in this case are good kids who are generally misunderstood. There is more than a little conflict between characters because Sheriff Jeff (Fred Graham, a veteran actor of more than 200 films, including "Wake of the Red Witch," "The Horse Soldiers," and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon") is supportive of the misunderstood teenagers in opposition to wealthy Mr. Wheeler who believes the sheriff is incompetent and the teenagers are a bunch of hoodlums. The lead teenager is Chase Winstead (Don Sullivan, who also appeared in "Teenage Zombies" and "The Monster of Piedras Blancas") who sings several songs in the movie and has a sister who gets braces for her legs so that we have a bit of "aww" factor in this movie, especially when the Gila monster chases the sister in her leg braces. One of Chase's songs is passable, but I fast-forwarded through all of them.
The Gila monster makes regular appearances throughout the movie. There is the dramatic claw shot; there are the ominous Gila monster in the brush shots; and then there is the ever-popular Gila monster under the railroad bridge shot. This Gila monster is multi-talented. As is often the case in monster movies, most of the major characters do not know there is a monster lurking about until about two-thirds of the way into the movie. Once everyone finally realizes there is a giant Gila monster munching its way through the local population, including some passengers of a wrecked train, the sheriff and the teenagers are galvanized into action! The excitement builds as the Gila monster threatens a dance, which somehow includes Chase Winstead's boss Old Man Harris (played by Shug Fisher, a member of Sons of the Pioneers, who sang with Roy Rogers, and a veteran of many movies including "My Pal Trigger," "Mr. Roberts" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance") and then attempts to eat Chase's polio stricken sister as she runs in her new braces. Will the excitement ever end!
This movie is a study in contrasts. On the one hand the movie has very weak special effects. For example, the train scenes used film from at least two different trains, and maybe three. Also, the model train that wrecked was a poor match for the actual train used in the shots leading up to the wreck. While some of the scenes of the Gila monster were nicely done, others looked exactly like what they were, a genuine Gila monster walking around (or being pushed) on the ground.
On the other hand, the movie does play as a serious movie. The movie painted the teenagers as being a bit too goody-goody, but otherwise everyone acted reasonably typical for the era and the teenage parts of the movie refrained from the over-the-top nonsense that plagued many other teen movies of the era. I also admit that when I was a kid I thought this movie was really scary. I was probably ten at the time but I was impressed!
If you like old monster movies from the 1950's and 1960's, this one is certainly worth a watch. I have this one in my collection because I liked it when I was young and because it was cheap. It is also great for a Friday or Saturday night watch on a Halloween weekend or on New Year's weekend instead of letting a television programmer decide what you are going to watch.
Enjoy!
SORT OF A POOR MAN'S VERSION OF THE BLOB WITH A HOME-GROWN MENACE.......2006-10-22
IN A NUTSHELL:ONE CAN'T HELP THINKING OF THE BLOB WHEN WATCHING THIS CREATURE FEATURE
Like the 'The Blob', 'The Gila Monster' takes itself seriously -- dead seriously. Watching this film makes my mouth water for an audience to lampoon this charming 50s creature-feature for, but that is just part of the fun. You see, this film approaches its subject with the same gothic intensity that the original 'Outer Limits' did in 1963-1964. The film opens with a missing couple, presumed to be eloping, but we all know otherwise. Gradually, the County Sheriff begans to notice the same pattern that the audience had, only a bit slower. People are disappearing and in increasing numbers. Since most of the adults are drunk in this film, especially the witnesses, it is up to the teenagers to assist the Sheriff in bringing this big lizard to justice.
WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT: SO YOU NEVER SAW A 50 FT. GILA MONSTER?
Okay, so it's a bit corny and cliche, probably even when it played to drive-in crowds in 1959: small crowds, but crowds to be sure. It is played in earnest and the tension does build. Unlike the first feature, this film seems a bit drawn out, perhaps to be long enough to play for European audiences looking for new eclectic American productions -- perhaps not. Anyway, it seems as though this would have made a neat 'Outer Limits' episode if it had been tightened-up at bit with editing. Maybe a couple of country tunes could have been omitted, or maybe the serenade was important for the atmosphere of the film -- in any event it seemed too long for a very short film. Maybe we could have seen more of the Gila Monster, which Ray Kellogg, a Special Effects A-List veteran, expanded from a 2 foot reptile into a 50-80 foot long behemoth rather convincingly. All the scenes showing the monster were miniatures, but a full-scale set was made to make the transition from mini-monster to actual set with people pretty real looking for a low-budget thriller. Of course we don't see people and the Gila Monster in the same frame. For that kind of magic in 1959, you'd need Ray Harryhausen and about 3 years of his time. The film does start with a bang and then gradually builds suspense to a Nitro charged conclusion which is after all, all we want from a Drive-In thriller. From that standpoint 'The Giant Gila Monster' delivers as advertised, "ONLY HELL COULD BREED THE GIANT GILA MONSTER"!
BOTTOM LINE: GOOD CLEAN FUN -- NO BLOOD - GORE - NUDITY or PROFANITY
Okay, this is not classic cinema, but it is a classic drive-in creature-feature! There are some better entries in this genre, like 'The Blob' and 'The Killer Shrews', but in the end they're all fun to see and the variety now available on DVD simply gives us more opportunities to enjoy these B-creature-features of yesteryear in all their campy wonder -- again and again.
Fan of 50s sci-fi? This movie is FUN !!!.......2006-08-01
I love this movie.
Most people may think the acting is corny and special effects are lousy, but there is a certain kind of charm this movie has that stays with you. It's the kind of movie, if you saw it as a kid, you would never forget it.
I even think the Gila Monster is kind of cool .. Hey, he's cooler than some of those stupid Japanese monster movies (ever seen those Gamera flicks?)
The characters all have personality and charm (even the drunk is great!). The eerie music is great (it defines 1950s sci-fi), the hot-rods are cool and the low-lit scenes are great too. It just adds to the charm of the movie.
This movie is FUN, bad acting and all ... it's just a good time. Enjoy it!
Bad movie, but a lot of fun to watch.......2005-11-12
This is one of those movies that is bad but fun to watch anyway. A couple of teenagers and then the local garage owner disappear and it turns out the culprit is a giant lizard that somehow exists for weeks with no one noticing. No explanation is ever given as to where the lizard came from or why or how no one saw something that was big enough to derail a train with its head.
There is too much time spent on the main character and his problems and little spent on creating any actual tension with the lizard. The effects are what you would expect, a regular sized lizard walking aimlessly around a miniature set with weird music playing to let you know to be terrified. There are also two interludes where our hero sings. He isn't talented, even though the movie tries to tell you he is. The songs are terrible, have nothing to do with the movie and you will be praying for them to end.
The way the lizard is killed in the end is ludicrous, our hero is vindicated and everyone lives happily ever after blissfully ignorant of why their lives were interrupted for a few days by a mutated gila monster.

"With an eye like an eagle and tall as a mountain was he" <P><b>DANIEL BOONE...</b> legendary and long on trail-blazing adventure, Dan'l kindles pioneering spirits as he leads fearless men, women, and children in the quest to settle new territory (or... tame an undiscovered country). Starring Fess Parker as one of history's most famous frontier explorers, this classic television series brings the old frontier to life, packed with Indians, renegades & scalawags, struggling pioneers, and plenty of wilderness action.<P><b>Cain's Birthday </b><P>Mysterious betrayals, hostile Indians, explosions and more face Daniel Boone in this 2-part episode from the TV series' 1st season (1964-'65). <P>Boonesborough's men, away from the fort processing salt, are ambushed by warring Choctaws and Boone orders the men to surrender. Led to the Indian encampment, Boone bargains for the settlers' lives, but the Indians prepare for an attack on the fort, now only defended by women and children. Meanwhile, the water supply at the fort is running out and help from the militia is far away. With the powder supply blown up, there seems little chance that Boonesborough will be able to survive an attack. <P><b>Cain's Birthday</b> stars Fess Parker, Patricia Blair, Albert Salmi, Ed Ames, Cesare Danova and Ted De Corsia. <P>

Texas cowpoke Lincoln Costain (James Garner) washes ashore on the Hawaiian island of Kauai and helps the widowed owner of a potato plantation (Vera Miles) turn her ailing farm into a thriving cattle ranch, despite the machinations of a sneaky local merchant (Robert Culp). <I>The Castaway Cowboy</I> has all the qualities of Disney's other live-action movies from the 1970s: a clear, straightforward story; serviceable, unfussy acting; a dose of ethnic stereotypes (in this case, the simple, happy-go-lucky islanders); a mixture of sentiment, slapstick, and modest adventure; and a cute, spunky kid, for whom the hero becomes a substitute parent. Garner's easy charm makes the proceedings pleasant enough, though the cultural chauvinism doesn't date well. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

ADVENTURE ALL THE WAY FOR KID'S.......2005-07-06
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST CHILDREN'S MOVIE WHERE EVEN THE ADULT'S ARE CARRIED AWAY. I AM ABOUT 60 AND I STILL ENJOY THIS MOVIE. YOU HAVE TO LOOK FROM THE EYE'S OF CHILDREN IT IS SO GOOD THAT YOU WILL FORGET THAT YOU ARE ADULT BUT WILL INJOY WITH THE LITTLE KIDS-THANKS TO DISNEY AND ONE OF THE LAST OF THE OLD LEGEND OF THE WESTERN WORLD JAMES GARNER-WE ARE PRIVILIGED TO SEE HIM IN THIS 21ST CENTURY LIKE THE OLD TOM MIX IN THE BEGINNING OF THE CENTURY WHEN HE WAS AROUND WITH REAL WYATT EARP GIVING HIM THE TECHNICAL DETAILS. I DONT WANT TO GIVE AWAY THE STORY WITH VAST OPEN SPACES AND THE SEA FOR THE CHILDREN WHO MAY HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN THE SEA BUT THE HIGH RISE APARTMENTS OF CONCRETE JUNGLE.-I AM SURE THEY WILL ALL INJOY AND LAUGH AT THIS ADVENTURE TRIP-CURTSEY OF DISNEY FILMS.
Entertaining little Disney comedy-western.......2004-05-20
In the early '70's, James Garner made two films for Disney studios, "One Little Indian" and "The Castaway Cowboy." Of the two, "Cowboy" is by far the best: a slight but entertaining little comedy-western co-starring the lovely Vera Miles (who was also in "Indian"). She plays Henrietta McAlvoy, the owner of a failing Hawaiian (known here as the Sandwich Islands) potato plantation whose native workers fish a nearly drowned deserter named Costain (Garner) out of the ocean. While Costain waits for a ship home to Texas, he hatches a plot to save the farm by turning it into a cattle ranch, using the Hawaiian workers as ranch hands. Of course, in Disney films of the era, there is always a villain, and "Cowboy" features Robert Culp as Bryson, a local businessman who romances Henrietta in order to get her land and when she won't sell, stoops to some nasty business to sabotage Garner's plan.
Everything is predictable and ends just like you think it might. Also quite predictably, Henrietta is a widow with an irrepressibly cute (i.e. cloying and obnoxious) preteen son played by "The Poseidon Adventure"'s young Eric Shea, who gives an even more annoying, don't-say-your-line-shout-it performance than he gave in the previous film. The only other performances of note are given by native Hawaiians playing the workers as stereotypes who exist merely as goofballs to be laughed at. (More about that later.) Only Elizabeth Smith as Henrietta's housekeeper escapes with her dignity intact, since she manages to make her character more than a one-note stereotype.
Finally, about Anchor Bay's DVD presentation. Even though the copy I received was in fullscreen format (instead of the advertised widescreen--grumble, grumble) I kept it because of the excellent remastered print and the addition of a cool copy of the original poster art from the 1974 release on the back of the scene breakdown card. I still would prefer widescreen, but at least the picture and sound are much better than the awful transfers Disney have been ripping us off with on its own lazy releases.
Now, a word of warning about the presentation of the native Hawaiian characters: if you are sensitive about racial issues and potential racism in the movies, you may want to steer clear of this film. The Hawaiian workers are stereotyped as lazy and undisciplined men-children who would rather swim and play than work. This fact may make the film as offensive to some as "Song of the South" is to African-Americans. However, the natives do become better, more competent workers by the end of the film, so proceed at your own risk!
Castaway Cowby--a great movie!.......2004-02-08
I really liked this movie!! The scenery was beautiful (of course, it's Kauai and that can't be helped!) and the story line was interesting with all the obstacles James Garner had to contend with to help this family establish a cattle ranch. It also had a great ending and the good people won! My kids even enjoyed it (ages 4,5, and 8), so I must recommend it.
Disney Should Be Ashamed!.......2003-10-06
Disney should be ashamed this movie is racist to it's core. I would not let little children watch this trash and have them believe that some of the earliest and greatest cowboys in the world were in fact bumbling fools on horseback that needed to be taught to rope and ride by the righteous white man.The Hawaiians
were taught how to be cowboys by Mexican cowboys and quickly became and still are some of the greatest cowboys and hello they pre dated the cowboys in Texas by 20 years. Why not tell the truth sometime DISNEY
Best of the 2.......2003-07-27
Garner made 2 movie for disney. if your on the look out for good family movie that are fun, no cursing or nudity, a little action and a little romance... you want Castaway Cowboy, CC not One Little Indian, OLI.
CC is a nice movie about a cowboy that ends up stuck on an island. He shows the nice widow woman how to start a cattle ranch instead of tring to far or fish.
OLI is very boring. Not one of my three kids stayed for the end. And isn't that the true test of a movie. It isn't totally what mom or I like, it is also what they will like enough to sit and watch and enjoy.

Another EXCELLENT outing with Ron Howard.......2006-07-22
Since 1960, Ron Howard has proved his talent before and behind the camera. This post "Andy Griffith Show" vehicle showed that young Mr. Howard could move beyond the role of Opie Taylor, and do so with finess. Most child actors peeter out in their teens, Ronnie didn't, because, like our beloved astronaunts, he had the "right stuff." The sceens between him and Earl Holliman are well written and portrayed, giving a fine hint of things to come. His character showed that he could take on responsibility, could show just what he had in him, which was a lot of good stuff. It was this role, and his role in another Disney flick, "The Wild Country", plus his fine portrayal of the son in the short lived "ABC" program "The Smith Family" that paved the way for the "Happy Days" to come.

Great story about a boy adjusting to a new dad!.......2002-10-21
This story is about a boy with a hard time adjusting to his dad's death and his new dad. A dog named smoke helps him grow up and think of someone besides himself. Earl Holliman did a great job in his part of the patient and understanding step dad. This is a great family film and we enjoyed it. Too bad more films aren't this good.

<I>--Jerry Renshaw</I>
Description
A monster of unknown origin stalks Lover's Lane in search of fresh teenagers to devour in this monster-sized bash filled with rock 'n' roll, hot rods, poodle skirts, and prehistoric lizards the size of a Greyhound bus! Teens realize the cause of an escalating chain of destruction in their sleepy town, but authorities refuse to believe them until the corpses start piling up. Starring Ken Curtis (Festus from TV's "Gunsmoke") and directed by Ray Kellogg (The Green Berets), this is great and fabulous fun from the nifty Fifties, newly remastered like you've never seen it before!

Not very good.......2004-03-07
This is one of those movies that you are better off renting than buying. It stars Ron Howard as Huckleberry Finn and Donnie Most as Tom Sawyer (no joke, Ralph Mouth from Happy Days). Although Ron Howard has the look of a Huck Finn, I thought this was a terrible choice for this character. Both Howard and Most don't fit not only because they are made more for "series" television, but also because they are way too old to be playing these characters.
The movie attempts to be faithful to the book, and does a half way decent job, but the 78 minutes makes for quite a bit of plot skipping and assuming on the part of the audience. They don't spend too much time on the relationship of Huck and his Pap or home life with Widow Douglas, but spend quite a bit on the scenes with the duke and king and escaping down the Mississippi.
What makes this movie particularly disappointing is that it doesn't bring the novel to life at all, and fails miserably at giving it an "adventure" feel. The film seems to be presented in a "series" way rather than film. You feel like you are watching the Waltons and waiting for a commercial when they move to a new scene. The producers also decided to add a tacky song into the movie for no apparent reason.
There are appearances by "Mark Twain" (an actor dressed up like the author), who gives his two cents on the characters and how they fit into the time period. There is not much of reason to put this in, and, although it is an attempt to give background information for this time period, it comes off as being corny and silly.
The recent Elijah Wood version, although not as accurate as this one, is a better movie, as is the 1985 version with Patrick Day.
Three Thumbs Down.......2003-08-12
I watched this movie with my 2 sons. We were all disapointed even though we like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, we like to watch Happy Days reruns with Ron Howard, and we like old movies. A much better choice is "Tom and Huck (1995)" which is destined to become a classic.
