Product Description

Edward Norton's Academy Award nominated role as a White Supremist who sees the error of his ways while jailed for murder. Unfortunately, he leaves prison to find his brother (Edward Furlong) heading down the same path.

Amazon.com

Perhaps the highest compliment you can pay to Edward Norton is that his Oscar-nominated performance in <I>American History X</I> nearly convinces you that there is a shred of logic in the tenets of white supremacy. If that statement doesn't horrify you, it should; Norton is so fully immersed in his role as a neo-Nazi skinhead that his character's eloquent defense of racism is disturbingly persuasive--at least on the surface. Looking lean and mean with a swastika tattoo and a mind full of hate, Derek Vinyard (Norton) has inherited racism from his father, and that learning has been intensified through his service to Cameron (Stacy Keach), a grown-up thug playing tyrant and teacher to a growing band of disenfranchised teens from Venice Beach, California, all hungry for an ideology that fuels their brooding alienation.

The film's basic message--that hate is learned and can be unlearned--is expressed through Derek's kid brother, Danny (Edward Furlong), whose sibling hero-worship increases after Derek is imprisoned (or, in Danny's mind, martyred) for the killing of two black men. Lacking Derek's gift of rebel rhetoric, Danny is easily swayed into the violent, hateful lifestyle that Derek disowns during his thoughtful time in prison. Once released, Derek struggles to save his brother from a violent fate, and <I>American History X</I> partially suffers from a mix of intense emotions, awkward sentiment, and predictably inevitable plotting. And yet British director Tony Kaye (who would later protest against Norton's creative intervention during post-production) manages to juggle these qualities--and a compelling clash of visual styles--to considerable effect. No matter how strained their collaboration may have been, both Kaye and Norton can be proud to have created a film that addresses the issue of racism with dramatically forceful impact. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars Wow... Just Wow.......2007-06-22

A good friend of mine suggested this film, and I really didnt know what to expect going in, but after this film was over, I sat in stunned silence. I knew that racism was horrible, but I found through this film that it does not come without a terrible price..the loss of love, friends, family...and the realization that everything that you believed to be true isnt always the way things are. Edward Norton's performance takes the viewer through this journey, and its not a pretty one. He goes from an bright young man, to a vengeful bigot, to a remorseful excon with a brothers life in jeopardy, and you feel as though you are looking in on someones life in the course of 2 hrs. All of the acting in this film is first rate, and the ending wasnt quite as predictable as others might have you believe...it is quite shocking, as is much of the film. It causes quite a debate on the way people view others whos skin color is not the same. As Dr. King said, judge me not on the color of my skin, but on the content of my character. I live with racism, because I am a black man living in America...it exists, but if we educate ourselves like the main character in AHX, it wont stay around for much longer.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you think!.......2007-06-10

I was skeptical when I first heard about this movie, as I was originally mis-informed as to what it was really about! I am definetly glad I finally sat down and watched this film.

After seeing this film, it has quickly become one of my favorite films that I have ever seen. As others have said, Edward Norton plays his role so well, you may actually find yourself partly agreeing with what he says. The message of the film is very well done, and the ending is one of the most shocking I have seen.

Excellent acting, directing, and story-telling. This is a film to own, and a film that has become a classic within the world of movie-making!

2 out of 5 stars garbage.......2007-05-23

A waste of a fine performance by Norton. The film is an idealistic mess. Trite and melodramatic. I like the ending, because it completely skewers audience expectations, but beyond that, the film feels as if it has been patched together at the last minute. Segments don't entirely match, and most of the acting is uneven. The story is straight out of a tv movie.
If you are one of those typical film students who wears a trenchcoat, has a goatee and won't shut up about Clerks and Fight Club, this will probably be your favorite movie.

5 out of 5 stars XXXX..........2007-04-03

The fear of foreign races or people, and it evolving into an actual phobia, an intense and irrational dread, in other terms, racism, has been around since primitive man began forming tribes, millions of years ago. American History X examines racism in the context of present day neo-Nazism, and similar to the German Nazis of the 30's and 40's all foreigners are blamed for everything wrong with the State. The solution to unemployment, a high cost of living, rocketing welfare and rising crime is to jettison all immigrants, foreigners, from the country so that the original people, the white's in America or the Aryan race in 30's Germany can flourish as they are truly destined to do. This notion is one of the foundational tenets of fascism, and added to this, violence and war is the only method to achieve a `pure' flourishing State.

American History X is a strong film presenting the arguments for the Right and the Left where, for the most part, the propositions on both sides have valid points, however, it is impossible to argue a subject as complex as immigration, rising crime and the cost of living by blaming these situations on a particular race of people. In fact, the argument is absurd because there are always exceptions, and as this important film points out with force and powerful emotion, racism is about hate, fear and personal anger, projected on a generality because it is convenient, a scapegoat for a lack of control and responsibility.

Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton) is an intelligent young man but somewhere along the line began to hate Black American's, Asian American's et al, and under the tutelage of an older and influential White Supremist, (Stacy Keach), becomes the leader of a `skinhead' gang in Venice Beach, trashing foreign owned grocery stores to finally be jailed for the brutal murder of two teenaged Black Americans because they attempted to steal his car. Derek is strong, passionate, and terribly angry and now, a cold blooded killer and his younger brother, Danny, (Edward Furlong) idolises him.

Edward Furlong as Danny was perfect casting as he has a sensitive and forlorn, lost gaze, almost innocent because he loves his brother so much, and when his brother is released from prison with a different point of view, at first goes a little crazy, but will go along because he worships and loves him. Of course this makes the ending that much more forbidding and terribly moving. Furlong is a talented actor and is restrained in this picture, resulting in his performance being totally believable.

A film about such a controversial subject matter cannot avoid presenting a message for the viewer. In the case of American History X, racism is not an innate condition but a learned one, passed on from generation to generation.

American History X is not a good film but a truly great one and should be viewed by all concerned about our society and the hate and fear it contains...

Originally made for TV in 1977, this in-depth (six hours plus) version of Jesus' life is so thorough that the first hour is devoted solely to the story of his birth. The film doesn't skimp on some of the other landmark events of this famous story either. Director Franco Zeffirelli gives more than 12 minutes screen time each to the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. Passages of the Bible are quoted verbatim, the locations have a Palestine-like authenticity, and, aside from some of the principals (Robert Powell as Jesus, Olivia Hussey as Mary, and Stacy Keach as Barabbas), many of the non-Roman characters are actually played by Semitic-looking actors. Zeffirelli diligently provides the sociopolitical background that gave rise to Jesus' following and the crisis in belief it caused for the people of Israel (and one or two Romans). While not graphic by today's standards, some of the scenes--baby boys being ripped from their mothers' arms and slaughtered, nails being driven into Jesus' hands--may disturb young and/or sensitive children. <I>--Kimberly Heinrichs</I>

5 out of 5 stars Best Jesus Gestures Representation.......2007-06-23

There is not another movie that will show you what a human Jesus can look like better than this movie, eating, walking or thinking while he speaks are some of the characteristcs that shows how Divine an actual human being can be. A real masterpiece that will get you familiar to Jesus Ghospel's personallity.

The DVD says that comes in Spanish, but it doesn't, there is an exelent Spanish version for this movie, but is not included in this DVD, even though it says it is included; however the English version, which is the original version, surprisely is very good, so I'm not complaining.

5 out of 5 stars Jesus of Nazareth.......2007-06-02

For anyone who is a history buff I can honestly say that this is the closest that comes to truth from the history of the bible of Jesus Christ's time on earth. Everytime I watch it I always have tears in my eyes. A very beautiful film.

5 out of 5 stars The Life Of Christ.......2007-05-30

The best version of the life of Jesus, I have seen.

4 out of 5 stars Just what we expected.......2007-05-17

This is a great movie, which all catholics have as a reference for Holy Week. It depicts the life of Jesus since he was born, and dramatically but with realism brings it all the way through his resurrection. Despite the minimum use of special effects, it brings quite an amazing message from the Gospels, with amazing acting from all main characters.

This move makes you feel as if you were actually there... nice acquisition.

5 out of 5 stars A must see movie.......2007-05-15

I have seen a lot of movies on this subject this one goes into more detail and seems a lot more believable.

Kurt Russell reprises his role as Snake Plissken, of the near-future thriller <I>Escape from New York</I>, in this reworking of that film's basic premise. Instead of New York being a maximum-security prison, this time it's L.A., which through the agency of earthquakes has become an island of the damned. This penal colony is where the film's future rulers, something very like the Moral Majority, send those deemed guilty of "moral crimes." But something has gone wrong in this new moral order, because the President's daughter has absconded to L.A. with a detonation device, and Snake is commandeered to retrieve it. The film's dark dystopia, with its satrical elements taking aim at our dwindling freedoms, and the eclipsing of democracy by narrow interests, are more the subject this time. As a result the action suffers, and the plot devices are sometimes weak and predictable. But just below the surface there is a coiled Snake ready to strike. Steve Buscemi's performance as a weasely hawker of L.A. tour maps is a standout, and the presence of Peter Fonda and Pam Grier adds to the fun. In fact, just the sight of Fonda surfing down the flooded corridor of Sunset Boulevard is reason enough to check this movie out. <I>--Jim Gay</I>

1 out of 5 stars THE REDUX.......2007-06-19

A REGRETTABLE FILM,WE NEED TO FORGET IT !AND PRETEND THIS ONE WAS A BAD DREAM.

2 out of 5 stars Remake, not a sequel........2007-05-18

Although it was very entertaining seeing Russell reprise his Plissken character, the movie itself was a letdown. Same scenario: Snake captured, injected w/ life-threatening drug, forced to perform for the president, infiltrating former US metropolis that now houses the country's undesirables, escapes just in time, mission accomplished, gets last word, the end. The only thing that was different from its predecessor was the addition of cheesy special effects and campy scenes (Snake on a surfboard, anyone ? Gimme a break!) If this was meant to be some kind of parody of the first film (which is, obviously, farrrrr superior), then Carpenter and Russell succeeded. What were they thinking ??

2 out of 5 stars The Snake Man Cometh............2007-01-08

Okay, the rating above is not going to be liked but I have to be truthful.

The only good thing going for this movie was the return of "Snake Plissken".

This film's plot was essentially a rehash of the original "Escape From New York"...A bit more special effects (which in fact, did not make this a better movie)...

When I go to a sequel I expect to get what I paid for a totally new adventure with the same character / characters.

Kurt Russell's character is older and even more in the know of what the rewards are before he is offered them.

Obviously the movie doesn't really know where it's going as it takes two scenes (15 minutes of the film) (1st scene - President, Commandant, and Lackey give Snake the mission) (2nd scene - Commandant and Lackey brief Snake before he leaves for the mission) to explan to the audience what's the basic conflict.

I guess either Carpenter or Russell are just getting too old to take a GREAT leap and recount either an earlier Snake Plissken adventure or an adventure well worth telling..

I also wish to comment that this disc has no special features besides a movie trailer...
"Carpenter....Russell! " Please don't tell me "money" caused you to revisit a "cult figure"!

Some redeeming qualities are the acting performances of Cliff Robertson, Stacy Keach, Steve Buscemi, and Pam Grier. Robertson, Keach, and Grier may be old but they can sure make you believe in their characters!

Sorry, Snake...."I don't love L.A."

Peter Fonda and Kurt Russell surfing a wave down a Los Angeles reservoir is not cool, does not make this movie worth a look, good God, that scene stinks. P-U. Campy. This movie is a mess. A horribly made sequel. So bad it actually tarnishes the reputation of the original.

Although the live-action <I>Batman</I> franchise faltered artistically after Tim Burton gave up control, the slack was taken up by the Saturday morning cartoon show, whose creators are responsible for this feature film. Though a cartoon, <I>Batman: Mask of the Phantasm</I> is less cartoonish than the popular '60s TV show (which spawned its own movie, <I>Batman: The Movie</I>). <I>Mask of the Phantasm</I> combines the noir of the original comic book, the violence and dark humor of the <I>Dark Knight</I> comic book revision, and Burton's two movies.

In <I>Batman: Mask of the Phantasm</I>, everyone's favorite schizophrenic billionaire crime fighter is investigating the murders of several prominent gangsters. Meanwhile, his ex-fiancée and her father are back in town. Through flashbacks, these two death-obsessed kids are shown falling in love (she lost her mother; he lost both parents--of course, they meet in a graveyard), until she leaves quickly and mysteriously. Along the way, there's a short course in the origins of the Batman costume and the origins of the Joker (voice of <I>Star Wars</I>' Mark Hamill!), a big fight with the smoke-enshrouded Phantasm character, who is suspected of killing the gangsters, and an even bigger fight with the Joker at the abandoned Gotham World's Fair grounds. Altogether, a good ride. <I>--Andy Spletzer</I>

Description

Unmasking the Phantasm is just one of the twists in Batman: Mask of Phantasm, "one of the most imaginative films of the past year" (Chuck Rich, Westwood One). Only here will you discover all-new revelations about Batman's past, his archrival the Joker and the most grueling battle of Batman's life - the choice between his love of a beautiful woman and his vow to be the defender of right. Batman: Mask of Phantasm is a "mystery that is genuinely absorbing, suspenseful and moving" (Cincinnati Enquirer) and a film no fan should be without! Can the Dark Knight elude the police, capture the Phantasm and clear his name? Year: 1993 Director: Eric Radomski Starring: Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, Dana Delany, Hart Bochner, Abe Vigoda

5 out of 5 stars The best Batman yet!.......2007-05-07

The animated feature-length debut of one of the most popular superheroes of all time is a must own for any fan. Unlike the films, this movie goes into more character detail and gives us insight into the mind of Bruce Wayne, and what made the 'Bat'. The story and script are great, supported by good animation and amazing sound effects. Mark Hamill's joker is the best. Hope a special collector's edition comes out soon.

Not to take away from the 1989 movie which I have also reviewed, but this Batman is far superior to what has followed in the sequels. Kevin Conroy has found his place alongside Michael Keaton and Adam West as one of the best Batman portrayals on screen. And Mark Hamill as the Joker, who again is my absolute favorite villain ranks right up there with Jack Nicholson and Cesar Romero. The plot is well written, the animation is great and all in all this film, for a cartoon, is much more believable than recent Batman films. If you see this for the first time, I also recommend Batman:The Animated Series Volumes 1-3(I'm not a big fan of the revamped series on Volume 4), and Batman & Mr. Freeze: Subzero.

5 out of 5 stars Captures Batman better than any other movie.......2007-03-03

I have watched and own all of Batman the Animated Series and I have to say Kevin Conroy IS the definitive Batman. So noting that I consider this to be the best Batman movie. Any newcomer to Batman or even old fan will love this movie. I had never watched any of the Batman animated movies before recently and I have to say that I missed out. If you have all the seasons of Batman the Animated Series this is another DVD you'll have to add to your collection. This just captures Batman better than the big Hollywood movies. You won't regret buying this one!

4 out of 5 stars The Most Detailed Batman Origin From The 90s Animated Era.......2007-01-28

"Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm" is the theatrical release spun off from the 1990s's great "Batman: The Animated Series" from television. Those unfamiliar with the animated Batman material from this era should check out both the series, the movie, and the subsequent direct-to-video movies from the same line, because collectively they comprise the best pre-"Batman Begins" filmed versions of the Dark Knight, far surpassing several of the previous, live action, incarnations.

"Mask Of The Phantasm" unfolds on two fronts - the appearance in Gotham of a new crimefighter known as Phantasm, who uses (in direct contrast to the Batman) lethal methods to take out members of Gotham's organized crime groups; and a series of extended flashbacks that take us far more indepth to the early day of the Batman than the animated tv series ever had. Like the series, the movie tones down the darker elements from the modern-era comic books, and keeps things from becoming too complex, so as to keep the show as accessible to five year-olds as to twenty-five or sixty-five year-olds. It retains the higher levels of characterization and believability than the live-action Batman movies of the 90s, and in terms of sophistication and detail runs somewhat closer to the comics than the pre-2005 live-actions ever did. It ties the two timeframes it takes place in together very well and fits perfectly with the tv show, incorporating a number of the main characters (and their voice actors) from the series into the flow of the movie, all brought to life by voice acting that's way above the norm for animated comic adaptations. The distinctive visual look of the series's unorthodox animation style is in full effect here, and is as well-done as ever. Overall a great movie; well-suited to young kids but older viewers definately shouldn't pass it up on the grounds of it not being live-action. A solid 4.5 stars

5 out of 5 stars Batman is the Coolest Non-Super powered Hero EVER!!!!.......2007-01-03

This movie shows some interesting history of how Batman became the way he was. It starts with Batman's first appearance and the introduction to a woman that I think is the love of his life.
It made me cry.
All the same Voice Actors are here, including Bruce Conway as Batman. (In my opinion has the best voice ever!)
It you are a fan of the Animated Series, or a Batman fan in general you'll love this movie!

This terrific Walter Hill Western follows the careers of the James and Younger brothers--and uses the nifty idea of casting actual clans of acting siblings in the roles. Thus, the James brothers are played by James and Stacy Keach; the Youngers by David, Keith, and Robert Carradine; the Millers by Randy and Dennis Quaid; and the Fords by Christopher and Nicholas Guest. Hill, working with an evocative Ry Cooder score, creates a film that is at once breathtakingly exciting and elegiac in its treatment of these post-Civil War outlaws. The Keaches in particular bring a surprising dignity to the roles of Frank and Jesse James, while David Carradine is a hoot as Cole Younger--and the Quaids mimic real life (as it was for them then) in their battles as the Miller brothers. Bloody, to be sure, but also bloody good. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

But when the mighty Pinkerton detective agency swears to track them down, these criminals must face an awesome enemy that will stop at nothing to see them behind bars...or dead! Only through the strength of their loyalty and blood ties can the outlaws hope to survive the brutal pursuits, unexpected betrayals and blistering showdowns that mark the end of their dangerous ride.

5 out of 5 stars One of two best westerns ever made!.......2007-04-15

If you want to have a well rounded library of movies and want to include westerns The Long Riders, as well as, Tombstone, are two of the best ever made. With the direction of Walter Hill, music by Ry Cooder, and siblings in the starring roles you can't beat this fictional account of the exploits of the gang of Jesse James. Keith Carridine, as Val Kilmer did in Tombstone, nearly steals the show, but is balanced out by a talented group of real life acting brothers. This brilliant idea pits the true emotion of a young Dennis and Randy Quaid. Add this to your library you won't be disappointed.

this is one of the finest westerns made. if you have not included this in your collection please purchase. the acting is excellent, very well done to the period that they are portraying , and the storyline is very much to the historical theme of the film . a true must see for any western film . very believable !

Great video. I've been looking for this one for quite some time. Three sets of brothers plays three sets of brothers about the the days of the James gang right after the civil war. I'm glad to add this to my collection of western classics.

5 out of 5 stars A Western the way they used to make them.!.......2006-12-29

I have been watching Westerns ever since I was a kid, in the 1940's
That was after the time of Tom Mix and his era;but at the height of The Durango Kid ,Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. At that time we separated out the Westerns from Rogers and Autry, which we called Cowboy movies. They were the ones with yodelling, singing ,sweethearts, cattle rustlers, riding the trails and roping the steers. What I preferred was the era of the Gunfighters,Indian Battles, train robberies, Old West characters and lots of fast-action and shoot-outs in the saloons, canyons and the deserts.
This movie was produced in 1958;,hey that's nearly 50 years ago.I am not sure if I've ever seen it before, but it was so well made and with so excellent actors, scenery, color and music, the fact that it is still being sold today;attests to its high quality. I guess if any Western can be called a Classic;this must certainly fit the bill.
Anyone who reads about the Old West, and all that goes with it,knows about Frank and Jesse James,The Youngers,The Millers,Charlie and Bob Ford ,Belle Starr and all; have heard the stories in many different versions.Sure there was a lot of embellishments;but after all this is entertainment and never intended to be dry, factual history. I guess if that is one's preference;maybe one should go to the history books, newspaper accounts and court records;but even then you'll never know what really happened, nor why. However;for great entertainment you can't beat a well made Western movie;like this one,for example.
My favourite part in the movie was the Saloon Fight between Cole Younger and the Half-Breed,each holding the end of a strap in their mouth, and using Arkansas Toothpicks for weapons. This is a Western;sitting around a campfire, singing about little doggies and sunsets is a Cowboy moie.Nothing wrong with that;to each his own.
Several years ago,I visited the museum ,outside St Louis where Jesse was shot by Bob Ford.It gives one a real chill to stand in that very spot.

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable film...........2006-11-10

I am partial to a good western and this sure fits the bill. I am not a history buff of the west and I don't know of the accuracy of this film. If most films were historically accurate they would probably be somewhat boring. A good example is the OK Coral. I was entertained. I own the DVD and will watch it whenever I want to see a good western. I also concentrate on different parts of the film with each viewing.

5 out of 5 stars A marvelous collection of 4 Nova programs.......2006-04-11

Here, in one box, are 4 superb Nova programs that function as absorbing discussions of some of the most profound scientific discoveries in history and as biographies of the scientists responsible for them. Very few breakthroughs in science follow a linear path: there are usually a host of ancillary scientists whose contributions to the intellectual climate of the time provide the essential nutrients for discovery. Then there are the scientists whose insights are crucial to the final momentous breakthrough. Both groups are part of the fabric of these programs. Abstract ideas are easier to explain when there are people and concrete things to drape them on. I found the superb Galileo and Einstein programs particularly valuable (especially if watched in chronological order) for their thoughtful explication of the scientific concept of Relativity.

Relativity, in it's modern sense, originates with Galileo's primal work on motion and gravity. Following his death, his elegant ideas persisted over three centuries before Einstein's profoundly deep insights into the workings of nature illuminated the Relativity of motion, the speed of light, mass, energy and time. Along this 300 year long thoroughfare of thought, illustrious scientific names such as Newton, Leibnitz, Halley, Faraday, Maxwell and many others illuminate the way. As someone trained as a scientist, I can attest to how this mingling of ideas with personalities and history can make them easier to visualize and understand. Where the Einstein program appears weakest: the occasional emphasis on the 'sexy' Einstein, on 'Einstein the dude' who is just like any other fellow; hating school, ogling women. If the intent is to persuade the audience that Einstein was just an ordinary bloke, that anyone can conceive what Einstein conceived given enough spare time and a sufficient number of rainy afternoons, it is pointless. The kind of insights that led to his miraculous year of discovery, 1905, only happen every few centuries, if not longer. That applies to Newton, Galileo and Darwin, as well. Extraordinary discoveries require extraordinary minds. These 4 programs help curious nonscientists understand the products of these extraordinary minds, and the precursor ideas that helped seed them. Along the way, they also redress some historical wrongs. Women who were marginalized in the world of science by gender and religious prejudice, women such as Emilie du Chatelet and Lisa Meitner, are given long overdue exposure and their proper credit. This is a wonderful byproduct of these programs.

These 4 programs emphasize drama more than the science programs of the past. Inevitably, some may accuse them of being "dumbed down". I've always felt that anything that increases scientific curiosity and aides understanding is worthwhile. These Nova programs definitely achieve that end. They do not engage in deep scientific complexity, but they are intelligently entertaining and dramatically engrossing. If you are curious about these great scientists but are afraid that their science will be over your head, fear not. The shows are clear and not too difficult. They are challenging without being obscure; while never talking down to the audience, they are always eager to inform. For those more scientifically sophisticated than the average viewer, the historical drama and scientific biographies may hold intrinsic interest. All of the performers are superb. All of the scientists providing expert commentary are clear, informative and eager to enlighten. The computer graphics used to illustrate these shows are of the highest technical quality. The photography, likewise.

The DVDs are all NTSC encoded. The films are shot either full screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio or shot widescreen with a 16:9 aspect. The running time of the 4 DVDs is 420 minutes. Sound is Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo and the films are closed captioned. There are various extras including DVD-ROM text material and various web site links.

These 4 programs are an excellent and intelligent combination of science, biography and history presented for those who are curious about the world. Most highly recommended.

The Man with the Screaming Brain is cult superstar Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead 2), who also makes his directorial debut in this loopy blend of '50s-style science fiction thrills and slapstick comedy. Campbell plays a businessman who meets an untimely end at the hands of a vicious Gypsy femme fatale, who has also done in her ex-fiancée, an KGB-agent-turned-taxi-driver. Mad doctor Stacy Keach provides a solution for both men by stitching together their brains inside Campbell's dome; with no other option but to work together, the pair sent out to find their killer. What results is a broadly funny and frantic showcase for Campbell's physical comedy skills, with Ted Raimi (Spider-Man, Xena) offering hilarious support as Keach's wacky assistant. Campbell fanatics will appreciate the DVD's extras, which include a featurette on the film's lengthy gestation (18 years from conception to completion), and commentary by Campbell and producer David Goodman; a trailer, behind-the-scenes footage, and storyboards round out the supplemental features. --Paul Gaita

Description

Man with the Screaming Brain is a story of greed, betrayal and revenge in the big, bad city. William Cole, wealthy industrialist, winds up with part of his brain replaced by that of Yegor, a Bulgarian street hustler. The two couldn't be more different, but they share one thing - both were killed by the same woman. Brought back to life by a mad scientist, William and Yegor form an unlikely partnership to track down their common nemesis.

4 out of 5 stars "The Hippocampus Is Experiencing Cerebral Flashes!".......2007-05-29

I loved Bruce Campbell in "Bubba Ho-tep," surely the strangest Elvis horror comedy ever made, so I decided to buy "Man With the Screaming Brain," and while not up to the level of peculiarity that "Bubba Ho-tep" reached, I think it's a solid four stars on the B-movie horror comedy scale. Bruce not only stars as American industrialist William Cole, but also wrote and directed this little gem, originally made for the Sci Fi network in Sofia, Bulgaria for $875,000. It features a largely Bulgarian cast and crew, and the depressing post-Communism sets add a great edge to the film.

The other cast members are wonderful in their roles: Tamara Gorski as the evil Tatoya, and her ex-fiancé Yegor (Vladimir Kolev) are perfect as the confounding duo, while Antoinette Byron as Jackie Cole is the perfect annoying rich wife. My favorite casting decisions were the scientists: Stacy Keach as Dr. Ivan Ivanovich Ivanov could not be more perfect, and his wacky assistant, Pavel, is played by Campbell's old pal Ted Raimi to great comic effect. The Russian (Bulgarian?) accent Keach adopts is better than average for a B-movie, and makes some words genuinely difficult to understand (in the line I used for my title it's hard to tell if he says "flashes" or "flushes" for instance); this added to the depth of the Keach character substantially. You may like Raimi's robot rap, but then again you may not; it grew on me in the second viewing.

The film starts with a horrifying cab ride through Sofia. The driver, Yegor, takes them through "Gypsytown" where he has to fight off a carjacking. During this outing he sees his ex-fiancée, Tatoya, and inadvertently sets an extremely unusual love quadrangle into play. I don't want to give away the plot, but as is pointed out in the commentary, if you follow a key piece of jewelry through the film, the rest of the plot unfolds around it. It is unusual for a large number of main characters to die in the first act of any movie, but that's the beauty of Stacy Keach as a crazed scientist. Keach is able to reanimate the dead and in the process creates a very gothic Frankenstein effect.

There are many comic relief moments in the film: I enjoyed the scene in which Campbell changes clothes in a dumpster; I also found the restaurant scene with the self-induced swirley in a revolting toilet, followed by a milk and ice bath to work quite well. I was not as enamored with the robot as Campbell was on the commentary; for me a little went a long way. I absolutely loved the fact that Campbell (as the creature) rode a pink Vespa (moped) with tassels on the handlebars during a key chase scene through Sofia; I also found the robot catfight in a bridal shop scene (more brides should carry pistols in their garters) to be relentlessly entertaining. The homage to Mike Tyson in a bar fight was also well done, as were the general right-versus-left brain problems Campbell encounters. The robot death scene was well done camp at its best, although it could have been edited for time a bit in my opinion. In the end the messy love quadrangle is resolved in a novel (though somewhat predictable) way that worked well.

The DVD has lots of great extras. The commentary track is very interesting, and I actually liked watching the film more the second time. There are several "making of" extras, and I especially enjoyed the account of the 18 year ordeal of getting the movie made: you wouldn't think that would be interesting, but it is.

The film started a little slowly (the characters are totally disagreeable in the beginning), but after I warmed up to it I really enjoyed it. It doesn't measure up to "Bubba Ho-tep," but easily gets four stars.

1 out of 5 stars Bruce Campbell In A Bad Film????.......2007-05-23

Yes its true this was a terrible movie. Filmed badly and the acting was terrible even for Bruce Campbells standard. I have been a huge fan of Campbells work for years but this movie was just plain bad.Sorry Bruce I had to say it.
Two thumbs down.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2007-04-11

While the average movie go-er might find this film distressing in its flagrant randomness and zany humor, if you like strange independent films, or any of the major actors, this will probably entertain you. I definately recommend watching the film through with the commentary feature on at least once. Bruce Campbell, particularly, is quite amusing, as he chronicles all the craziness and problems that this movie had from start to finish. You should also steer toward this film if you like campy sci-fi, marriage-crazed gypsy women, Bruce Campbell, or Ted Raimi, in particular. The violence is fairly low-key, and who doesn't love seeing Bruce Campbell try to ride a tiny pink Vespa?! I personally love this movie even more because of Ted Raimi, who plays the "mad" scientist's rather...special...lab assistant. He spends most of the movie consuming unsafe quantities of Red Bull, while stealing corpses and talking in a very amusing Russian accent (which dies occasionally, giving a very odd mix of Russian and Detroit-ish...), oh, and rapping (something which will probably only be found amusing by fans). You can tell that the actors are having a lovely time, and the woman who plays the evil gypsy lady does a superb job of looking seductive and flaming crazy at the same time. Overall, while bizarre, I thought this movie was enjoyable, and well put together. The dialogue is generally amusing and the acting, I thought, was quite good. Go watch it; if it damages your mind, don't worry, you didn't need those brain cells anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie for teens and adults.......2007-02-16

A librarian friend's review (from the Monroe County Library System webpage):

I read once that Spin readers voted Evil Dead II the best movie of the decade. It may have been ten years ago that I saw that poll. Since that time, I've seen all the movies in the Evil Dead series and am now a big Bruce Campbell fan. Bruce Campbell is all that's great about B-movie actors. He's a charismatic ham, aware that he's not the greatest actor in the world so he's just having a good time. You could say the same things about Chuck Norris, the Rock, or any number of action stars, but what Campbell has and they lack is his Looney Tunes sensibility. He looks like a man's man, but he's a goof at heart. He makes his directorial debut with Man with the Screaming Brain (2005) and keys into exactly those qualities fans want in a Bruce Campbell feature. The movie is manic Saturday afternoon sci-fi. It runs along smoothly until an end-of-the-movie chase scene that seems a little tacked on.

5 out of 5 stars So odd its great!.......2006-11-03

Prepare to be mesmerized by the oddity of the story, while seeing a film that purposely fakes a pretense of seriousness. It is a very funny movie, kind of a dry sardonic sense of humor. It is worth watching / owning.

Perhaps <I>Stripes</I> and <I>Caddyshack</I> screenwriter Harold Ramis and <I>Commando</I> director Mark Lester were not an ideal collaborative team. But while this 1986 misfit comedy is something of a misfire, <I>SCTV</I> fans can take heart in watching John Candy and Eugene Levy triumph over weak material as mismatched security guards who stumble upon mob corruption. Candy, in particular, does wonders with a role that in lesser hands would have been a mere "fatty falls down" stereotype. He plays a cynical disgraced cop who takes Levy's cowardly former lawyer under his wing ("Stick with me, I'll keep you out of trouble," he reassures him). Like Ramis's character in <I>Stripes</I>, Levy rises to the occasion under fire, and even gets the girl--Meg Ryan in early ingénue mode, trying out the fetching grins and ingratiating smiles that would make her America's sweetheart three years later in <I>When Harry Met Sally</I>. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

This film follows John Candy, a police officer who gets fired for a crime he did not commit, and Eugene Levy, a poor excuse for a lawyer through private security guard school and into the new career of Night Watchmen. Little did they know that they would stumble across a conspiracy which they are the only ones poised to unveil. Bolstered in Cast by Meg Ryan, this film has many funny parts that do get you chuckling pretty hard. Along the lines of the Great Outdoors, this film is worth adding to a good comedy collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great comedy.......2006-07-31

This is an off the wall comedy. With john Candy and Eugen Levy. I had to get this one. Lots of laughs

2 out of 5 stars Really Two-and-one-half stars on normal scale, but Dir. Mark Lester screws this one up!.......2006-05-09

Take Eugene Levy (Puhleez!), his former
Canadian (R.I.P.)SC-TV alum John Candy
and add 'Commando's' Dir., Harold Ramis
and (!) James Keach (!!) to the writers
and what do you have? An only moderately
funny John Candy movie! There are some
great bits in here - but this movie is
the greatest waste of space (make that
talent!) since Greenland! Robert Loggia
and Meg Ryan are wasted in stupid stereo-
typical roles. And Levy with Ryan?! About
as bad as Billy (Clipper-fan, his only
redeeming quality!) Crystal with Ryan!
Or Tom Hanks! Lester did better here
than with 'Commando',but is that really
saying much!?

5 out of 5 stars i would do business with this again.......2006-03-01

came in good time and i a1 condition

Before Ken Burns, <I>Glory</I>, and <I>Gettysburg</I>, the Civil War proved an effective backdrop for this 1982 miniseries--available complete and uncut on this three-disc set--about two families divided by the War Between the States. John Hammond stars as John Geyser, a Southerner caught "betwixt and between" when he becomes a war correspondent for the Northern newspaper published by his uncle. Like a Civil War-era Forrest Gump, he finds himself "where history's in the making," from the Battle of Bull Run to the scene of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Stacy Keach costars as an Army scout who takes the "fresh off the farm" Geyser under his wing. Julia Duffy is the schoolmarm who loves Keach. The ham-handed dialogue is a guilty pleasure ("What's wrong with this land that produces such a bitter fruit?" asks the embittered Geyser). The meticulously mounted battle scenes, though, are a Civil War reenactor's dream. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

1 out of 5 stars It was decent until the main character killed Federal soldiers.......2007-03-19

It was decent until the main character killed Federal soldiers, that was unexcusable. Notice to all producers: Make more Civil War movies! There is a shortage of good ones!

5 out of 5 stars The Blue and the Gray.......2007-01-28

An absolute must for the Civil War buff or someone wanting to enjoy a great movie. I liked it so much I bought a copy for my son.

Enjoy!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not very realistic.......2006-08-19

A good miniserie but we could regret a lack of historical reality, i.e it is a story with the civil war as a background (only some aspects : not a word about Robert E. Lee, about slavery...), and not the civil war history lived by some characters. I would recomend to watch "North and South" which, despite a very much romanced story, has a much stronger historical background.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed But Worthy.......2006-07-05

I've never seen "The Blue and the Gray" miniseries until now- and I'm 52 years old (better late than never!). Overall it was very enjoyable. The costumes were great- although I too noticed that the hair styles were often modern. I'm a descendent of 20 Civil War soldiers (both sides)-so I have a particular interest in the period. Of course, I loved the miltary scenes- which were done well. The historical sequences were not always accurate- but that was okay too. The series was loaded with stars- many of whom are now passed away. Gregory Peck was great as Lincoln. However, I have to say that I thought some of the acting of others seemed sub par. At times, I felt like I was watching a high school play. There were too many predictable elements as well- you just knew that Julia Duffy's character was going to die. In summary, it is worth watching despite some of the things mentioned.

5 out of 5 stars the best civil war mini-series,bar none.......2006-04-25

well before they turned john jakes "north and south" books in a "days of our lives" clone complete with false endings and the soap mind set, this steller mini-series came out and was a ratings boom for c.b.s. and the answer to this civil war buffs dreams.
the story starts just before the civil war as young john giser(john hammond, not the best actor in the world, but looking, and acting good enough for the part) heads north with his talent for drawing to work at his uncles newspaper in gettysburg!!!!!( see the set up for later stories)!!!
the uncle sends john to cover the trial of john brown, the first of many historical figuers john will meet, and there he meets jonas steele(stacy keach, who is very good in the role) and they become fast friends.
the rest of the show takes us from bull run, to the battle of the wilderness, to the death of lincoln(gregory peck in a small but great role one of his last). the whole mini-deries is done wiyh style and an eye for the true feel of the war. maybe not vthe last word in civil war movies , but one of the top 3 at least.

Come Early Morning comes as a mid-afternoon career correction for Ashley Judd, an actress oft dissed in the years since her fresh, breakout performance in the indie gem Ruby in Paradise. No mystery there: what other lovely and talented woman has appeared in such a string of crummy serial-killer movies? By redemptive contrast, Come Early Morning suggests a de facto sequel to Ruby 13 years down the road. Again Judd limpidly portrays a young Southern woman, Lucy, trying to get free of a debilitating heritage--dysfunctional family on every side--and find her way to some kind of contentment. Lucy makes more bad decisions than Ruby did. For her, early morning isn't so much a new day as the hour when she faces waking up with one more guy she couldn't care less about. She plans it that way, because commitment is something she flees with grim resolve. But she also knows that the program isn't working for her.

The writing-directing debut of another offbeat actress, Joey Lauren Adams (Chasing Amy), this is a beautifully observed film, free of condescension toward its Arkansas folk, with an appreciative eye for the plain beauties of small-town life and semi-rural roads, and a sharp ear for three-cushion dialogue. "Did I miss Easter?" Lucy's housemate quietly cracks when she finds Lucy dressed for Sunday-go-to-meetin'; Lucy's trying to reconnect with her estranged dad (a magical, almost wordless performance by the wonderful Scott Wilson), who's started attending "a new holy-roller church." She also meets a newcomer (Jeffrey Donovan, excellent) who ought to be Mr. Right ... but nothing quite plays out according to formulaic expectation in this movie--among the most satisfying of 2006, which most people are going to have to discover on DVD. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

(Drama/Romance) Lucy is a 30-something woman who keeps waking up with a stiff hangover and a guy she doesn't even want to look at. If coming to grips with why she keeps repeating this pattern isn't enough, Lucy also begins to realize that she needs to get in touch with her familial past and, more importantly, with the person she has become.

4 out of 5 stars Great acting by Ashley Judd.......2007-06-06

It was Ashley Judd's acting that drew me into this flick. I didn't even know she had it in her to come across so real. I like how this movie doesn't have a happy, fairytale ending. It has a realistic ending. It ends with a beginning, really. Watch it, you'll see. It's gritty and life-like, not cutesy-poo like the dvd case photo would have you believe.

2 out of 5 stars Love Ashley Judd, just not this movie.......2007-06-03

I think Ashley Judd is an incredibly talented actress and usually will watch movies just because she is in them. But this was a really bad movie as far as story lines goes. I came away from this movie feeling very little, mostly that I wasted 2 hours watching. No inspiration, no thoughtful moments not even a just plan good entertainment. I hate to say it, but skip this movie.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!.......2007-05-25

This movie was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope Joey Lauren Adams writes more movies!!!! Very touching and realistic

5 out of 5 stars I liked the movie. Thank you........2007-05-10

I liked the movie very much. I would recommend this to other folks.

1 out of 5 stars Not even worth the one star.......2007-05-05

I love ashley judd. But this is the worst movie i have ever seen. the Plot was not even a plot. Ashley Judd plays Lucy who has a lot of issues and instead of being productive and doing something, she goes and gets drunk and finds herself in bed with some guy she met at the bar the night before. she then meets this guy Cal played by Jeffery Donovan and he really likes her and he sees things could be good between them only if she had not gone back to her old way. see when lucy sees things going good she destories it by getting drunk. THIS I NOT WORTH EVEN 1 STAR. THERE WAS NOTHING TO THIS MOVIE. IT DIDN'T EVEN MAKE SINCE MOST THE TIME.
