A complicated movie about the Central Intelligence Agency and its agents, The Good Shepherd isn't your typical spy movie. Though it stars Matt Damon (The Bourne Identity films) and Angelina Jolie (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Lara Croft franchise)--actors with considerable experience in the action-espionage genre--The Good Shepherd requires that they play more subdued and (much less interesting) characters here. The movie focuses on the career or Edward Wilson (Damon), a privileged Yale graduate who goes on to help found the CIA. He is a quiet, serious, and guarded man, even in the most intimate moments with his civilian wife (Jolie, in a role that wastes her talent). Set against a backdrop of real-life events such as the Bay of Pigs, The Good Shepherd is meticulous in creating a realistic timeframe. The film gets a jolt of excitement when Robert DeNiro (in his first directing role since 1993's A Bronx Tale) peppers the screen with appearances by Joe Pesci, Alec Baldwin, and William Hurt. But those moments are too infrequent. At 157 minutes long, the film is crammed with many factual details, but the characters are shortchanged when it comes to development. Viewers have to wonder why anyone, much less someone like Wilson who has everything going for him, would devote his life to a thankless job that brings so little happiness to himself and his family. The Good Shepherd is an ambitious but flawed film. The actors do a formidable job with a well-intentioned but meandering script. However, we meet so many characters and learn so little about each that it's difficult to drum up much empathy for any of them. --Jae-Ha Kim

Ever since this convoluted thriller dazzled audiences and critics in 1995 and won an Oscar for Christopher McQuarrie's twisting screenplay, The Usual Suspects has continued to divide movie lovers into opposite camps. While a lot of people take great pleasure from the movie's now-famous central mystery (namely, "Who is Keyser Söze?"), others aren't so easily impressed by a movie that's too enamored of its own cleverness to make much sense. After all, what are we to make of a final scene that renders the entire movie obsolete? Half the fun of The Usual Suspects is the debate it provokes and the sheer pleasure of watching its dynamic cast in action, led (or should we say, misled) by Oscar winner Kevin Spacey as the club-footed con man who recounts the saga of enigmatic Hungarian mobster Keyser Söze. Spacey's in a band of thieves that includes Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollak, and Benicio Del Toro, all gathered in a plot to steal a large shipment of cocaine. The story is told in flashback as a twisted plot being described by Spacey's character to an investigating detective (Chazz Palmintieri), and The Usual Suspects is enjoyable for the way it keeps the viewer guessing right up to its surprise ending. In some ways, Warren Beatty's 195-minute film about the radical movement at the beginning of the 20th century is the last Hollywood studio epic. A peerless reporter, John Reed, mixes with the intellectuals of the time who see socialism as the answer to end what would become the First World War. As with epics, we go on a journey--from Portland to New York to Europe and finally Russia--just in time to witness the revolution that would make Reed famous upon publishing "Ten Days That Shook the World." But Reed had more ambition, and Beatty's ambition is splendidly captured on the screen, matched by a tremendous cast and stunning visuals (shot by Oscar-winner Vittorio Storaro). Reds doesn't have the action or vistas as a David Lean epic, but travels on the road less taken--here, seeing the birth of communism. Beatty and Trevor Griffiths lace their talky script of ideas with plenty of humor and fashion a poignant love story. Reed's infatuation with the rebel without a cause, Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton), turns into a love triangle with playwright Eugene O'Neill (Jack Nicholson at his most sublime). As Brooks becomes more complex and stalwart, the love story becomes something more. Keaton is perfect in following the arc of Brooks, just another spot-on casting decision by Beatty. Also impressive is Oscar winner Maureen Stapleton as feisty activist Emma Goldman and author Jerzy Kolinsky (Being There) as a Russian diplomat. The boldest stroke is hearing from real "witnesses" talking about the times. They are funny, poetic, deft, provide musical accompaniment and, most importantly, expertly set up scenes. The uninitiated will learn about this time in remarkable fashion; the cineaste can marvel in the ground Beatty covers, never better then a montage ending first half as Reed and Brooks are literally swept up in the revolution.

Beatty states at the top of the DVD extras he's not a big fan of talking about a movie (and did no publicity for the film upon its release in 1981). So there is no commentary track, just an expertly produced 90-minute retrospective with interviews from most of the major players, minus Keaton. We find out why Beatty's best performances are the ones he doesn't direct, while Nicholson provides the reason why Beatty had to star. Beatty talks about the process to interview the witnesses, and when we see bits of unused footage, it whets the appetite for more. Certainly, an hour of witness outtakes would have been something special, and would allow Beatty not to speak about his masterpiece. --Doug Thomas

The title refers to the time required by all rodeo cowboys to stay on a bull if they want a judge's score. For them, such a short time can seem like an eternity. The same is true of the beginning of this true story, a country tale of Lane Frost, a real-life, crowd-pleasing bullrider who rose to rodeo fame in the late '80s. The characters seem so irrepressibly good, so unreal, that the film comes out of the chute without a buck or much of a purpose. But Frost's story, and that of his relationship with his wife, Kellie (Cynthia Geary), eventually gains momentum. Luke Perry is an underrated actor, and he balances an "aw-shucks-ness" with an internal spark that makes that salt-of-the-earth stuff not so salty. When the film is finally over and the end credits show home movies and stills of the real-life Frost, you'll wish the ride was just a little longer. --Keith Simanton

The premise behind this revisionist Western from executive producer Jonas McCord (Earth: Final Conflict, Ask the Dust) was novel enough: veteran character actor Anthony Zerbe ran a Pony Express station, and counted among his diverse group of riders such future legends of the Old West as Wild Bill Hickok (Josh Brolin) and Buffalo Bill Cody (Stephen Baldwin; Christopher Pettiet would join them in the series' third and final season as a youthful Jesse James). Ostensibly, the Riders' job was to deliver the U.S. mail, but somehow, adventure kept intervening, and the Riders rallied valiantly to defend escaped slaves ("Black Ulysses"), give testimony in the case of a stagecoach massacre ("Speak No Evil"), and even deal with their own growing fame ("Ten-Cent Hero," which addresses the pulp mythologizing of Hickok). Of course, there was always time for a little romance as well, especially between Hickok and comely housemother Emma Shannon (Melissa Leo, who departed the show after this season for more modern pastures on Homicide: Life in the Street). A host of notable guest stars supported the uniformly fine cast, including Cynthia Nixon ("Gathering Clouds") and Chris Penn ("Matched Pair"). The movie, Bio Dome, is a must see. Pauly Shore and Steven Baldwin are the main actors. They play as two frat boys who get trapped in a biological bubble with 5 scientists. It is rated pg13. The movie was released in 1996.

I tried watching this on tv one time and couldn't get into it.I've never been a fan of Pauly Shore.I've always thought he was very grating and very annoying and couldn't act.I could see that they were trying to be funny,but it just didn't work.I thought the relationship between him and Stephen Baldwin bordered on homosexuality,which seemed kind of weird and wondered,why would the 2 girls be interested in these 2 in the first place?? I'm sure there are other Pauly Shore movies that are way better than this one,but I doubt it.I guess you have to be a certain age and mentality to enjoy this.He never did do anything beyond his "weasel" persona,like Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey did with their career.I guess he didn't have the talent to pursue anything else and so he faded into oblivion,which seemed that nobody else missed him.I mean,is anyone out there waiting and wanting a comeback from Pauly Shore? No,there isn't.If you like sub-mental movies,then try this one,but you're missing a whole lot of better quality and better written movies done by people who know what they're doing...If you want to see a movie where Stephen Baldwin doesn't embarrass himself,then try THE USUAL SUSPECTS.Otherwise,stay away from this completely!!!

This is obviously an important flick, with over 100 reviews on Amazon. Most rave, a few bash -- almost none in the middle. It could be mindset, maybe political bent. But I feel sorry for those who cannot appreciate this little gem, an outrageously hilarious, quotable romp with a message! Yes, maybe the message is mixed with fart and stoner humor, but Bud and Doyle (the Frog and the Squirrel) who "own this place, total!" really grow and realize that they have "made Vasquez lake" and "have to fix it". They are not some "shaved down pool Nazis" they want to "free the Mahi-mahi, if you will..." and they go from guys who "can't cork it (negatory)" wanting to "pee in your Jurassic mall" to rejects even within the closed world of the Biodome: "I'm going to start my own dome, like a dome within a dome... so don't come knocking on my door!..." To formulating a plan to fight back after Doyle single-handedly and in one (mouth filled with Pizza) sentence "Don't give me any of that bourgeois/smourgeois -- gimme the drink, gimme the drink..." wins back his Photocopier-employed friend to make the flyers: "Have a beer with a deer..."

A better environmental piece than even Koyaanisqatsi. Almost as much fun as "Dancing. Naked. Want us to take of all our clothes, feed us some weird punch..."

I disagree that it's not right for kids. I think they should show it in the schools. (Current music is much more suggestive.) And my kids have watched it (with supervision) since an early age. We quote it all the time to each other a crack up. It is an endless source of family humor. we have watched it dozens of times together. Just a really great flick all around. I would give it six stars if I could.

So all I can say to the inimitable Pauly Shore is "Thank you Naomi!"
