The recipe for <I>Blade</I> is quite simple; you take one part <I>Batman</I>, one part horror flick, and two parts kung fu and frost it all over with some truly campy acting. What do you get? An action flick that will reaffirm your belief that the superhero action genre did not die in the fluorescent hands of Joel Schumacher. <I>Blade</I> is the story of a ruthless and supreme vampire slayer (Wesley Snipes) who makes other contemporary slayers (Buffy <I>et al.</I>) look like amateurs. Armed with a samurai sword made of silver and guns that shoot silver bullets, he lives to hunt and kill "Sucker Heads." Pitted against our hero is a cast of villains led by Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), a crafty and charismatic vampire who believes that his people should be ruling the world, and that the human race is merely the food source they prey on. Born half-human and half-vampire after his mother had been attacked by a blood-sucker, Blade is brought to life by a very buff-looking Snipes in his best action performance to date. Apparent throughout the film is the fluid grace and admirable skill that Snipes brings to the many breathtaking action sequences that lift this movie into a league of its own. The influence of Hong Kong action cinema is clear, and you may even notice vague impressions of Japanese <I>anime</I> sprinkled innovatively throughout. Dorff holds his own against Snipes as the menacing nemesis Frost, and the grizzly Kris Kristofferson brings a tough, cynical edge to his role as Whistler, Blade's mentor and friend. Ample credit should also go to director Stephen Norrington and screenwriter David S. Goyer, who prove it is possible to adapt comic book characters to the big screen without making them look absurd. Indeed, quite the reverse happens here: Blade comes vividly to life from the moment you first see him, in an outstanding opening sequence that sets the tone for the action-packed film that follows. From that moment onward you are pulled into the world of Blade and his perpetual battle against the vampire race. <I>--Jeremy Storey</I>

1 out of 5 stars 1 and 1/2 hours of my life I'll never get back.......2007-05-28

dont even bother, unless you're just in it for the fashion and score (some nice techno sounds).

4 out of 5 stars Wesley Snipes is unbelievable in this movie.......2007-04-04

This is a great movie. Wesley is perfect in the role of Blade and Stephen Dorff makes an excellent baddie. It's fast paced, hard hitting from the very beginning and always has me gripped to the end. The fight scenes are brilliant as are the effects. I think the reason I liked it so much was the humor of the characters, it was done in a way that although the film is great it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Many films have been made with vampire subject matter being the main focus. It seems everybody has their take on vampire lore, be it the cross, the silver, the garlic, the aversion to sunlight, whatever. Some of those ideas are included here. The storyline is familiar... a group of vampires conspire to take over the world, with one person (mainly) standing in their way. Blade (Wesley Snipes) lives for the sole purpose of the destruction of the vampires masses, who have slowly but surely moved into the world, and share it with humankind. For the most part, the human race is blind to the fact that vampires exist all around them. The vampires have even taken familiars, people who aspire to be vampires and do the vampires' dirty work for them to show how worthy they are of eventually being "turned."

I just loved the special effects in this movie as well. From the blood-soaked vampire-style rave, all the way to the inevitable fight scene at the end. There's certainly enough blood and gore to go around, but after all, this is a vampire movie. The various shapes and sorts of weaponry Blade uses are fairly unique, and not generally used in contemporary action films. Snipes have more flair with a decked-out sword than he does with, say, a machine gun. Plus, there's so much more thought that goes into fighting with a blade than just blowing someone away. "Blade" isn't exactly like the comic books, but it is a great adaptation to this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Blade.......2007-03-22

I have bought all of the blade movies. I decided to watch it again the other day and had almost finished the movie when it quit and I had to eject the dvd. I had bought this used but never watched it. I threw it in the trash and ordered a new one. I love the blade movies and Wesley Snipes is great in all of them. I also like kris christofferson. This is a movie that is exciting from beginning to end. Pop you some popcorn, get a coke and sit back and enjoy this movie. This deserves a five star rateing.

5 out of 5 stars Blade is a must see!.......2007-02-21

You don't even have to like comic books to enjoy Blade, featuring Wesley Snipes! The first 10 minutes are more action packed than other blockbusters like Bad Boys, and that is partly what makes this movie a huge success.

After watching this movie again today, it struck me how many other action movies of that time period (late 90's) copy from Blade. There is a scene where Snipes meets Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff) in a park and Frost dodges bullets from Snipes assault weapon. Does the Matrix ring a bell?

Other than X-Men 2 & Spider Man 2, this is my favorite Marvel Comics movie adaptation! For every succesful film, seems like there are 3 or 4 duds from Marvel ie, Daredevil, Fantastic 4, Punisher, The Avengers, Ghost Rider, for example.

I've been a big fan of Wesley Snipes since Major League and he brings Blade, slicing to life!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-02-15

You gotta love Vampire movies, and this is the best of the blade series.

I always loved this classic because it gives the viewer an inside view to what really does happen on the streets of Americas most dangerous cities.

4 out of 5 stars Judgement Night.......2007-05-07

A chilling film. Well done; the late-night inner-city environment is scary. I recommend this disc!

5 out of 5 stars Judgement Night.......2007-03-12

I love this movie and have rented it many times hence the reason I purchased the movie. The Cat & mouse chase is brillient and the actors are also great. However I could not view this purchased movie as it is not the same region as Australia. Therefore I won't be purchasing any more movies from this website.

4 out of 5 stars You be the judge.......2006-10-15

Dont buy this if you haven't already seen it. Rent it first and then buy it if you like it. So if you have seen it you have probably made up your mind if you are going to add this collection or not already. But here is my 10 cents worth anyway.
The reason I ever saw this movie in the first place was for two reasons. a)the soundtrack which featured the top heavy metal and hip hop acts around at the time and fused them together. And b)Denis Leary, who I liked as a stand up comic and was curious to see him acting in a serious role playing your typical "bad guy" role.
I wasn't disappointed in either case. The music provides a great backdrop to the mood of the whole movie. And Denis was great in the role of Fallon, a drug-dealing no-nonsense bad guy in control of a whole neighbourhood.
So I didn't hesitate to buy this when it was finally released on DVD. It was a good movie back in its day and still is today in my opinion. The all star cast is a bonus as well, although I am not a particular fan of Jeremy Piven, he was quite good in this role. Peter Greene is once again very appealing in his bad guy role as Fallons right hand man.
It definitely wasn't Emilio Esteves' best movie and I think Cuba Gooding Jnr was out of place as his best friend, but still a worthwhile purchase for any fans of theirs.
Special features include a trailer and that's it. Would have been good to get a commentary from the director but overall I give it 3.5 stars and Ill round that up to 4.

5 out of 5 stars Good film, quality DVD...give it a try!.......2006-06-12

I preface all of my DVD reviews with the following note: There are more than enough film reviews on Amazon.com and, quite frankly, it's a bit ridiculous. A person can scroll through scores/pages of reviews without reading a single sentence about the quality of the DVD. If you want to review or discuss a film, go to IMDB. If you're reviewing the DVD, speak to the qualities (or lack thereof) of the audio and video; mention your opinions of the plot, acting, etc. but please don't write an essay!

Now, on to my review of the Judgment Night DVD.

VIDEO (A-): The films starts with a shot of the sky and then pans down to the neighborhood below. I have the newer Universal DVD (which I understood to be a very good transfer), so my heart sank when I saw quite a bit noise and speckles present in that first shot. Thankfully, however, this did not continue longer than 15 or 20 seconds. The rest of the film was clear and detailed. Black levels are very important since 95% of this movie takes place in very low light; again, the black levels held up nicely and so did the colors. It is presented in its proper theatrical aspect ratio and is anamorphically enhanced. While not a perfect transfer, it is certainly a very good one.

AUDIO (B): This DVD comes with DTS and DD 5.1 tracks; I always go for the 5.1 option and this one doesn't disappoint. The music enhances the scenes and action, but is almost always in the background and never clashes with the dialogue. That is to say, its mix is just as it should be. The effects are well-done, but there's nothing spectacular. There's nothing sonically wrong with film or the DVD, but this isn't one to show off your system with.

FILM (A-): The very definition of an underappreciated movie. Like many people, the only reason I became aware of its existence was because I caught it on the USA network one lazy afternoon (in fall 2005 to be exact). The "look" and "feel" of the film were such that I thought it was made more recently; I was quite surprised to learn that it was actually released in 1993. A dynamic cast, especially Leary, Gooding Jr., and Estevez, put in solid performances. The direction is competent and the cinematography is great. There isn't much in the way of a convincing story or plot, but it's an above-average thriller. It's linear, down-to-earth, not too grusome, and doesn't rely on gimmicks like sex scenes or nudity. Sadly, this movie is probably destined to languish in obscurity. I doubt many people would pick this up as an impulse buy, which is unfortunate, because I think most would be pleasantly surprised and actually enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars a keeper.......2007-06-17

This type of story is a difficult one to pull off, but this movie does it. Not a dull moment. Things keep changing all the time. The emotional tension remains tight all the way through, yet the movie never becomes oppressive. There are a number of relieving moments of achievement, of aid from other people, of being befriended by strangers. The characters, especially the father, are all realistic. No stereotypes here. The father is a real horror. Unfortunately, such people are not only real but not uncommon.

Rick Shroeder does an excellent job with the acting and with the Georgia accent. Not a trace of his natural southern California accent comes through in any of the scenes.

Good movie for the whole family. Worth watching again.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up!.......2007-05-07

WONDERFUL movie starring Ricky Shroeder about an older brother trying desperately to hold his siblings together as a family, despite an alcoholic father who tries to defeat him at every turn, and greedy people who try to take advantage of his good fortune when things start to turn around. Ricky portrays an older teen with just the right mix of confidence, confusion, exhaustion and frustration. He definitely makes you believe in the character.

4 out of 5 stars great instant classic.......2007-03-30

this is a movie from my childhood. not a great movie for little kids but i fell in love instantly. When i bought the dvd after not seeing it in years, the story line was still good but the make-up and effects weren't as good but hey it was a movie made in the '80s so for the time they did pretty good. my kids when they watched it these days thought it was funny but a little scary.
But they are used all the high tech movies.

5 out of 5 stars 80's was the best for movies.......2007-01-15

This is at least on the top 10 greatest horror movies in the 80's

3 out of 5 stars Good cheap thrills, especially for younger viewers.......2006-09-07

Like so many products of the 80's, The Gate succeeds more on nostalgia than actual entertainment value. But that's not to say it isn't worth watching. In fact, it's probably one of the best films of its kind: Low-budget, mid-to-late 80's PG-13 horror with a then-unknown cast, and a generous amount of special effects.

What also strikes me about it, years later, is that the story itself more resembles an old-fashioned monster movie than a teen horror flick. I still get a kick out of watching the basic plot (kids inadvertently unlock a gateway to another dimension, unleashing demonic critters) tick by like clockwork. And it's all fairly inoffensive, though there are still a handful of decent scares.

Even without the nostalgia factor, I think this is a fine kid's horror film. Great for a Saturday matinee or a Halloween marathon paired with TREMORS or Fred Dekker's THE MONSTER SQUAD (for which a DVD release is long overdue).

5 out of 5 stars classic schlocky horror.......2006-01-21

before i even get into my glowing review of this cult classic horror film,i want to call a long overdue moratorium on the long winded, synopsis-heavy reviews, people read these to glean opinions and REVIEWS of the film from like minded genre fans, the brief, succinct synopsis that amazon provides is enough to allow the reader to decide if he wants to check out the film, the poorly written synopses are useless, time consuming, and they take up space. you didn't write the film, so chill out with the play by play, please. anyway, that having been said, this is pure, cheesy, schlocky 80's horror, all the elements are there: bad special effects that elicit instant laughs, a dorky horror freak best friend(who bears a resemblance to paul from the wonder years), a saucy older sister with even saucier friends, and a young, baby faced stephen dorff looking scared and perplexed for most of the film, a far cry from his cocky, arrogant, james dean/vampire turn as deacon frost in 1998's Blade. the final sequence, with the giant demon rising from the hole, is actually pretty impressive, at least for a film made in that era. worth buying. the dark poet

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, awful DVD.......2005-05-07

First of all: I LOVE this movie.

Now let's go to the DVD edition:

AWFUL 1:33 aspect ratio, grainy picture, shaddy and tons of compression blocks.

Extras: trailer (ok) and a cheap still gallery. Very poor, I know it's too much asking for a 'Making Of' for a movie like this, but....

Sound: English Stereo. No Subtitles in ANY language. VERY POOR.

The best thing of this DVD is the cover. Nothing else.

Conclusion: If you are and horror fanatic, and you like this movie, search for a german edition under a collection called 'Extreme'. It has a remastered picture, original Widescreen ratio and dolby english sound 2.0 track. Pretty good edition, it only lacks of extras and subtitles.

This one sucks, I only give3 stars 'cause this movie ROCKS. But this DVD is truly, truly cheap and dissapointing.

3 out of 5 stars More Like 3.5 But It Could Have Been Better.......2007-06-15

When I heard of Shadowboxer I thought definitely a movie for me. I love movies about hitmen and the stories of their lives. The movie is about two contract killers Mikey (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and Rose (Helen Mirren). Mikey is Roses stepson but they are now in another type of relationship, a closer one. They are contracted to take out the wife of a crazy mob boss named Clayton (Stephen Dorff). When they arrive to do the job they find that the woman is with child and start to have complications. For some reason Rose would like to keep the woman and her unborn child and protect her. When Clayton finds this out he immediately starts a hunt for the three but not before they start a new family life.

This is not the first Lee Daniels film I've heard of but definitely the first I've seen. Now lee is good but I do think he tends to overdue it in his movies with excessive weirdness or something like that. He starts the movie out with an interesting scene to get you into the movie and then throw something crazy in there that I can't really explain. To me it takes away from the movie and it just seems like he puts it in there just to put it in there. You'll see what I mean when you watch it. This movie could have been so much better had he focused on exposing Cuba Gooding Jr.'s feelings a little more. He was completely hollow for a great portion of the film and it took a lot away from his character and his performance. If he gave Gooding a little more to work with I think this could've been one of his best films to date.

The rest of the cast was off and a little out of touch with these characters. Mo'Nique was cool but Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Dr. Don seemed fake especially the relationship between the two. Stephen Dorff was definitely off and too crazy. The guys script had to be nothing but cussing. I watch plenty of movies with cussing and I don't care but when you say 4 cusses to 1 normal word in every sentence it's just too much. The story was ok and the picture was great plus I love the ending a lot. It leaves room for a sequel but who knows if there will be one. Not everyone will like Shadowboxer but some will. It's an ok movie and I think Daniels will have better movies to come but I hope he learns from his mistakes cause he can do way better than this.

5 out of 5 stars great movie!!!!!!.......2007-03-09

This was a great movie. I have watched it 2 times. It will keep you guessing and wow Cuba.......

4 out of 5 stars Cuba did his thang and hers........2007-02-13

The movie was pretty good. Had alot of twist and turns. Great acting and crazy story line. You'll enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding !.......2007-02-04

What a refreshingly different, entertaining movie! We loved it.
Cuba Gooding, Jr. just shines and is fabulous. He has such presence as the disturbed assassin. He really carries off the whole film. Mirren, Dorrf, & the woman who plays the wife of the mobster were terrific also. I admired the unpredictability of the plot. The screenplay was well done. Highly recommended if you want to watch a movie that casts its own mold. Original, extremely well-acted.

Cuba Gooding Jr. is one of the most under-appreciated & under-utilized actors of our time. His screen presence is very strong. I'd love to see him in more movies. Gooding's versatile, and good-looking without being smarmy or smirky. I have just become a big fan after watching him in this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but I can understand not liking it. 3 1/2 stars........2007-01-22

It's described as a relatively mainstream hitman movie, but it turns out to have bizarre subplots. Definitely the movie to see if you're into Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s butt. I think if it was advertised more honestly, it would have attracted viewers who were into the weird combination of sex and violence, and it would have better ratings. The direction is good, the script is good, the story completely unbelievable, even the gangsters are not believable, but the two leads are excellent, and it's fun, if bizarre to watch.

Take <I>West Side Story</I>, remove the music, add excessive profanity and violence, and you'll get <I>Deuces Wild</I>. It's an overripe melodrama in which rival street gangs--in this case Deuces vs. Vipers in 1958 Brooklyn--inevitably clash in a deadly rumble, preceded by shameless scenery-chewing from nearly everyone involved. Stephen Dorff plays the head Deuce, agonizing over his older brother's drug overdose and leading a cast of rising stars and familiar faces including Brad Renfro as Dorff's hot-tempered kid brother, Norman Reedus as the vicious lead Viper, Fairuza Balk as Renfro's no-nonsense girlfriend, and Matt Dillon (uncredited) as the kingpin who introduces heroin to Dorff's drug-free turf. Balthazar Getty, Frankie Muniz, and James Franco are also in the cast, suggesting that director Scott Kalvert was hoping for an unforgettable ensemble. What he got instead was a stale story crowded with percolating posers, recommended only for those who've never seen the 1979 street-gang classic <I>The Warriors</I>. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Deuces Wild doesnt have that much fight in it.......2005-09-26

Stephen Dorff (Blade, Entropy) stars as the leader of the gang called the Deuces and he was stricken years ago when one of his brothers died from an overdose that his enemy on the otherside of the street, the leader of the Vipers, played by Norman Reedus (Blade 2, Gossip) gave him. Now, Reedus springs out of prison and wants to take revenge on the Deuces starting a club on their side. Brad Renfro (The Jacket, Tart) plays the second older brother of Dorff who falls madly in love with a member of the Vipers sisters, played by Fairuza Balk (Almost Famous, The Craft) but his brother Dorff has his suspicions about her and doesnt want Renfro to be going out with her. Then things heat up as both gangs go head on in fights and brawls to see who comes out on top. Sometimes boring, nothing that can bring it up to be a good movie. Some of the acting is laughable and the editing, especially the fast motion/slow motion sprinkled into the fight scenes are really lame. Also starring Matt Dillon (Crash '05, The Outsiders) who is wasted here, Balthazar Getty (Lost Highway, Lord Of The Flies), Max Perlich(Blow, Drugstore Cowboy), James Franco (James Dean, Spider-Man 2) , Johnny Knoxille (Big Trouble, Dukes Of Hazzard), Frankie Muniz (Agent Cody Banks, Big Fat Liar), Deborah Harry (lead singer of Blondie) and Dre de Matteo (Assault On Precinct 13 '05).

4 out of 5 stars no more west side story comparisons,please!!.......2005-02-21

when i heard about DEUCES WILD back in late 1999 early 2000,i was elated at the prospect of there finally being another 50's/early 60's type of street gang melodrama on the horizon.
yet,of course, because of the 9/11 incident in new york, the a-holes in hollywood decided to push back its release for quite a while,so i had to be content with the occasional promo photo in random movie magazines.
finally the movie came out without much fanfare, alas it was also the 'spiderman' weekend, and also the innocuos 'lord of the rings' was in theatres as well that weekend, but luckilly that meant i was in the movie theatre with just myself,my girl and about ten other people.
i thought the movie was excellent, great costumes, great cars, great period music, great locations, good yet hammy acting, gorgeous leading ladies, stylized violent rumble scenes, cheezy yet touching overacted scenes between familys, decent period detail.
yet then the reviews started coming in,and everybody who had ever had freshmen english or drama class compared it annoyingly to west side story,a 1961 singing and dancing musical, when they should have made comparisons to another tho far superior 1961 gang film, john frankenhiemer's black and white opus,'the young savages',or even to photographer bruce davidson's late 50's photo essay,'brooklyn gang' or even the short comic story in the late 70's underground comic,'50's funnies',called,'turf',about a gang in the 50's fighting with another gang who wanted drugs in the neiborhood and who had mob backing and a character was even named marco.....awfully convenient dont you think?
anyways, while this movie was'nt as good as 'the young savages','lords of flatbush' or 'the wanderers',to name but a few,but it was a hundred times better than the wimpy 'west side story' could ever be.
i dont know if this review helps, but the leads in this film were really good, stephen dorf, brad renfro, drea dematteo, faruiza balk, matt dillon, normon reedus and james franco putting in good performances......also i liked the fact that they did,nt over saturate the film with to much music from the past,it was just the right amount, very good choices of songs by 'dion and the belmonts','jerry butler and the impressions','the valentines','dee clark' and a few others.
and of course, faruiza balk and drea dematteo, tho a little long in the tooth to be playing teenagers, looked absolutely scrumptiuos.

5 out of 5 stars A more intense version of West Side Story.......2004-11-27

Scott Kalvert did an outstanding job directing this movie and making the time period as realistic as possible. The similarity between this and Westside Story is the gang rivalry. In Westside Story, you have The Jets vs. The Sharks and in this movie you have The Deuces vs. The Vipers. I didn't see all of Westside Story though but it seems like its less intense than this movie. This movie has some Rebel Without A Cause as well but I didn't see that movie either. I compare this movie to Rebel Without A Cause because of the gang element and Stephen Dorff is The Jimmy Dean of this movie. Stephen Dorff does a great job as 'Leon', the noble yet violent leader of The Deuces. Brad Renfro also does a great job as Leon's younger brother Bobby. He is easily influenced by his brother's hatred towards The Vipers and his life-style is even more chaotic when he meets 'Annie', who is played by Fairuza Balk. Drea DeMateo was so so as 'Betsy', Norman Reedus does a great job as 'Marco', and Matt Dillion does a great job as 'Fritzy'. Overall, its a powerful and intense movie and a must see for movie fans. You'll be pleasantly surprised!

1 out of 5 stars save your money.......2004-04-13

Unless you like cheesey, poorly written, poorly acted, and poorly executed movies save yourself the money. If you just have to have a nostaglia trip, get The Outsiders instead

4 out of 5 stars just ok .... far from great , but not awful.......2004-01-10

Well like most others have commented yes the basic plot of the movie has been too many times to count . And yes there have been dozens of movies about the big-greasy hair and white t-shirt gangs of the late 50's and early 60's . But how many of those involved heroin dealers? or how many were as violent but as well written as this movie ... Yes , I will admit that the casting is a little weird in places . Most of the characters are suposed to be in their late teens or early twenties , and Fairuza Balk and Drea Demateo are just a little too old to be playing girls in their late teens . Or the head of the Deuces and his brother are really out of place , the are suposed to be in their early 20s! Couldn't they have found actors with less receaded hair lines?

The film itself is ok and is filled with ok writting, decent acting , and tons of nostalga ( all the cars and the BROOKLYN Dodgers). And if you want to know the honest truth I saw the movie mostly because I'm obssessed with Fairuza Balk (dont ask why , Im not sure "why") .Yeah overall the movie does leave something to be desired in some areas but you should find something to like and will probably watch this again when you dont know what else to rent or need to kill an hour or two. So yeah its an ok movie.

Ian Hart's second performance as John Lennon (the first was the little-seen <I>The Hours and Times</I>) commands attention in this marvelous musical bio of the Beatles in Hamburg directly before their stardom. The focus is on the "5th Beatle," Stuart Sutcliffe (Stephen Dorff), a bluesy bass guitar player who finds Germany has more interesting things (art and a woman) than music. The woman, Astrid (Sheryl Lee), chronicles the early years of the Beatles, and she falls in love with Stuart, a move that would influence many aspects of the Fab Four. Nearly overpowering the film is Hart in a great, energized performance of an artist on fire. The music was adapted for the movie, rediscovering the raw sound and ballistic energy in the back street clubs. These scenes of rock and genius intermixed with a nervy lead singer evoke similarities to Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. Directed by Iain Softley. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

5 out of 5 stars THE BEGINING OF ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFULL CONTEMPORARY STORIES.......2006-10-31

Before the Beatles, Before Lennon-Mcartney there was Lennon-Stucliffe two working class boys from Liverpool that loved each other like brothers , Lennon wanted to conquer the world with his rock and roll band music and Stu wanted to show the world his art, however Stu accepted Lennons invitation to make a brief gig in Hamburg with the band , Stu purchased a bass with the money he won seling one of his pieces, immediatelly the five guys entered a whole world of hardcore German scene with cavarets , bars, strip shows, gruppies, alcohol and illegal substances but in the middle of all that Klaus Vooorman and his friend Astrid two avant-garde artists introduced themselves to the band one night at the club they were playing , Stu and Astrid were immediatelly hooked up by each other causing the friendship between Lennon and Stucliff were even more fractured due to the discrepances in interests booth friends had, Astrid influenced Stu and intruduced him in to this environment of painting, literature, photography and fashion very different to the rock and roll concept his four friends liked, Astrid were responsible for the historic registers of the Beatles beginings in Hamburg due to her pothograpys and later were the inspiration of the stetic concept the band adopted in hair style and wardrobe , The guys get a record contract and Stu choosed the love of Astrid instead of the band dreams, It was difficult for Lennon who depend emotionaly on Stu, but it was wrotten on Stone the path the band had to follow and the story that we all know, Stu died briefly afterwards by a brain hemorrage and the fab five became four , to be honest we couldnt imagine The Beatles in a different way.

4 out of 5 stars Glimpse of the largely unknown proto-Beatles.......2006-08-04

"Backbeat" provides a fascinating and alternative viewpoint of the pre-stardom Beatles. Ian Hart's jealous, sarcastic, and insecure Lennon is both fresh yet seemingly correct. Liverpool and Hamburg lay at either ends of the bridge between the sappy 50's and avant-garde 60s, and the film moves us across that bridge at the frenetic and raucous pace of the cover tunes of the then-Beatles' playlist. Hart and the actors playing McCartney and Harrison bear a less superficial and more unnerving resemblance to the young Beatles, certainly not in the way of a Vegas revue, and all the better for it. It's probably a good thing though that Stu Sutcliffe quit the band, if quite a sad thing he died so young. His continuance with the Beatles is one counterfactualist scenario I'm glad not to imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2006-07-25

"Backbeat" is an excellent portrayal of the Hamburg phase of the early Beatles, and succeeds on every level. Although purportedly intended primarily to tell the story of "fifth Beatle" Stuart Sutcliffe, the focus quickly shifts to John Lennon who (as in real life) dominated the music and lives of the early Beatles. It is as much the story of Stu and John as the story of Stu and Astrid, and explores the dynamics of both complex relationships. Still, it is a fascinating look at the early Beatles, who paid their dues by playing in some of the rough Reeperbahn bars in the pre-fame years. The cast is excellent, and were obviously chosen for their talent rather than their resemblance to the characters they portrayed. The music is also excellent, and complements the story perfectly. In all, "Backbeat" is an entertaining journey through the world of the early Beatles, and is well worth purchasing for repeat viewings.

3 out of 5 stars no title.......2006-04-06

Pretty good movie of the Beatles' early years - particularly of their beginnings in Hamburg, Germany. None of their original music, however; producers probably couldn't pay for that. The story is really about a fifth member, Stuart Sutcliffe, a gifted artist who died at 21 in Hamburg with his wife, a German photographer, who gave the remaining Beatles their mop-top look. Sutcliffe, or the actor who plays him, Stephen Dorff, an American, kind've resembles James Dean, but without his intensity. One reviewer states that he was Britain's most promising young artist before he died of a brain hemorrhage, probably brought on by a fight back in Liverpool because of something John Lennon said. The movie doesn't say whether Lennon knew this or not. It also seems to imply that Lennon was bi-sexual. He certainly felt strongly about Stu; but it also implies that he could have loved Stu's wife. I could never really get into this movie; maybe because I was never that crazy about the Beatles' music. And only the actor who played Paul McCartney in any way resembled the Beatle he was playing. Although supposedly Dorff looks exactly like Sutcliffe.

4 out of 5 stars John Lennon's guilt.......2005-12-23

I am a big fan of Stephen Dorff. He is so beautiful male actor. His eyes are so sensitive and sharp. I saw this movie because he is in.

However I started watching it then my eyes are going to Ian Hart who plays John Lennon. In the end, I almost forgot about Stephen was there.

Ian Hart had done a gread job, I think. He acted very well of young Lennon's potential charisma, confusing, and uncontrolled great passion to music and friends.

Needless to say, This movie is about Stuart Sutcliffe who is a member of Beatles in the begining and short time but influenced very much on their fashon and appearance. He is also a very talented painter. But John Lennon is such a great icon that seemed to make anything go away except him.

When the movie ended what remained in my mind was that Lennon's guilt. How he had been feeling with his best friend and his future. Actually accoring to his biography he had been feeling a guilt to Stuart's death. I realized that how Lennon was a huge human being that may cause his death, even though I don't like very much the Beatles' sound.

As another entry in the video-game-to-movie genre, <I>Alone in the Dark</I> certainly delivers in terms of its splattering gore and number of things that get shot or blown up with the kind of arsenal familiar to any fan of games that allow the player to shoot or blow things up. You could argue that some game-based movies have been big successes--gauged either by audience appeal or box office scores. Even though a lot of hardcore gamers probably won't care, <I>Alone in the Dark</I> is not of that ilk. At least the <I>Resident Evil</I> and <I>Tomb Raider</I> series had some interesting characters and locations (not to mention sexy stars). But <I>Alone in the Dark</I> is crippled from the first by a mundane setting of caves, laboratories, and street-fighting backgrounds as well as a cast (including Christian Slater, Stephen Dorff, and Tara Reid) that couldn't be less interested in the overly complex plot. The absurdity starts right away with a long expository pre-title text crawl that carries all the gravitas of a "Monty Python" sketch intro. The gist of the plot has a group of scientists, special-ops military guys, and paranormal freaks and geeks investigating evil creatures that were once harnessed by an extinct subset race of Native Americans. Unleashed again, the creatures must be destroyed, which is where the video game blasting and attendant gore comes into play. Considering the cult following the game series carries (the first installment is over a decade old), <I>Alone in the Dark</I> could find a nice little life on DVD, but theater-goers might discover the title's a little too literal. <I>--Ted Fry</I>

Description

Edward Carnby (Christian Slater) is a private investigator specializing in unexplainable supernatural Phenomena. His cases delve into the dark corners of the world, searching for truth in the occult remnants of ancient civilizations. Now, the greatest mystery of his past is about to become the most dangerous case he has ever faced. With the help of his ex-girlfriend, archeologist Aline Cedrac (Tara Reid), and his bitter rival, government agent Richard Burke (Stephen Dorff), Edward is about to learn that just because you don't believe in something doesn't mean it cannot kill you!

4 out of 5 stars Its not a classic but.......2007-06-23

I recently saw this movie and I enjoyed it. I didnt find anything wrong, probably because I was looking to be entertained rather then find hiding meanings. Its a great action movie. Plus, im a huge metal fan. They have six videos on the dvd from good metal bands, that was just icing on the cake for me.

2 out of 5 stars It tried, it failed.......2007-06-21

This reminds me a little of "Relic", but relic didn't preach like a documentary. Perhaps they thought it made it Film Noir, but they were sadly mistaken. I like Christian Slater, and the rest the cast is decent in their parts. The creatures are downright good. Weapons that fire light bullets kind of cool. So why does it fail as a movie? The intro text back story is to long, Slater telling things in background dialogue gets old, and his character doesn't seem to feel anything. The supposed tension between him and an old 713 rival never really feels tense. The ending is just stupid. Supposedly the creatures are sealed up again, but they can't find anyone in the city or at the 713 headquarters. Did everyone get wiped out like the tribe of people in ancient times? Who knows and who cares? Not me. That stupid beginning and ending were just to much. I might have tolerated the bad dialogue throughout but putting that lame beginning and ending on it were to much. So although I had seen this some time ago, when I rented it again it was obvious why I never bought it. The only movie that stinks enough to get one star though is Ishtar.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2007-05-16

I like it. there are so many for me to comment on. All the DVD'S ARE GREAT. Thank you

1 out of 5 stars I'm confused...........2007-04-21

I saw this movie in the theater and still don't really know what it's actually about. I have to say though, that if you rank this "film" as a comedy, then it deserves 5 stars, sadly, I'm pretty certain that Uwe Boll didn't mean it as such (though i'm sure he would say otherwise). Despite this movie being as bad as it is, I have to say that it made for one of the best movie going experiences that I have ever had, the consesus of the viewing audience was that this movie was so bad, that noone minded one bit when everyone in the theater started heckling it out loud in Mystery Science Theater fashion. The movie was fool of great moments and memorable lines like "don't be insane!" and virtually every word to come out of Tara Reid's mouth, but the best part came when one of the characters called out for their lost friend Marco and literally 5 people, including myself, couldn't resist the urge to yell "polo" at the screen. This is one of those movies that's so unbelieveably bad that it borders on being art (if you consider taking a dump on a puppy artistic expression that is). It amazes me that there are people out there that may actually like this movie, I can't think of a single use for it, though I can honestly say that if a copy of this film were found in Sadam Huisein's palace during operation Iraqi freedom, then it certainly justifies going to war and is proof that Saddam had at least one weapon of mass distruction.

1 out of 5 stars uwe boll fails at life.......2007-04-17

Have you ever been stabbed in the face? I haven't but while I was watching this movie, I had this almost overbearing curiosity to find out what its like. Seriously, this movie is so bad, suicide won't erase the haunting visions of sheer ineptetude from your mind. this movie is probably the worst movie ever made. well, there are worse movies out there, shatter dead and 13 seconds being two that i can name off the top of my head, but i mean come on both movies had a combined budget of a McChicken sandwhich with a small order of fries. whats this movies excuse?
