In an era when so many movies about inner-city youth focus on gangs, drugs, and violence, <I>Walkout</I> deserves props for its sincere depiction of the peaceful efforts of Chicano students to effect positive change in the Los Angeles school system. The year is 1968, a time of profound social upheaval, what with the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, the escalation of the Vietnam War, the chaotic scene in Chicago during the Democratic Convention, and so on. In East L.A., a young schoolteacher (Michael Pena) tries to instill pride in his students, reminding them of Chicano contributions to the Civil War and 'Nam and taking them on a tour of the west side, where they see how the other (i.e., whiter) side lives. Laura Crisostomo (Alexa Vega from the <I>Spy Kids</I> series), a good girl and ace student, soon finds herself caught up in the movement to improve conditions at local high schools--much to the chagrin of her dad (Yancey Arias), a strict Filipino immigrant mistrustful of "agitators" (this father-daughter dynamic, while not the film's only cliché, is perhaps its most obvious). Said conditions are not, in fact, all that horrendous; there's nothing good about corporal punishment (students are "swatted" for speaking Spanish during an English lit class), of course, but the lack of Mexican food in the cafeteria and the fact that school bathrooms are closed during lunch are hardly issues of earth-shattering importance. The students persist nonetheless, leading to mass boycotts (the titular "walkouts"), the predictable over-reaction by police and other authorities, and, eventually, some tangible results. All of this is presented by director Edward James Olmos (who also has a small onscreen role) and three screenwriters in the kind of earnest, inspiring style of a TV movie of the week (the film originally aired on HBO in 2006). But while <I>Walkout</I> is hardly what you'd call "edgy," its efforts to refute stereotypes and promote Mexican-American cultural awareness are nothing if not admirable. Bonus features include three audio commentary tracks, with participation by Olmos, the writers, and executive producer Moctesuma Esparza, who was part of the student movement (and is portrayed in the film). <I>--Sam Graham</I>

Description

From the producer of Selena and directed by award-winning actor Edward James Olmos comes the stirring true story of courage and justice. The year is 1968, the height of the national civil-rights movement. Paula Crisostomo (Alexa Vega, Spy Kids) is an idealistic honor student who refuses to "play it safe" in a school system that discriminates against Mexican-Americans. Together with thousands of supporters, she coordinates a multi-school walkout of students to protest academic prejudices. Mentored by her charismatic teacher Sal Castro (Michael Pena, Million Dollar Baby), and with the help of her friend Bobby (Efran Ramirez, Napoleon Dynamite), Paula learns that sometimes the price of progress is high - but it?s ultimately worth paying.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and necessary!.......2007-05-31

With so many negative role models in the media and real life for minority children, this film exposes society to a truly inspiring idea--the disenfranchised CAN succeed in mainstream America! "Walkout" is an amazing piece of history that should be required viewing for everyone, from Congress trying to legislate immigration reform to impoverished high school students who have never thought of a way up and out in life. Thank you, HBO, for championing this project and giving our society this authentic and moving testament to the power of education.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful lesson.......2007-05-10

I began showing this to my Spanish classes as soon as it came out. In fact, one of my Mexican-American students told me about it (gracias Ian!). I teach in an urban school with a diverse population. Social justice is a huge issue in our building and community. I have been amazed at how much this film has impacted my students. They connected deeply with the students in the film. There are so many discussion topics that came out of the film: inequality, poverty, heritage languages, student activism, cultural chasms, the connection to the civil rights movement, I could go on. I urge everyone to watch this film. I encourage my fellow teachers to incorporate this film into their curriculum. And you don't have to be from an urban area to feel the power of the inequalities in the film or be Latino to feel the pride of these students. It gives me chills everytime I hear a student call "Walkout!" or "Viva la Raza" or "Chicano Power!"

3 out of 5 stars Almost a documentary.......2007-04-30

Good intentions doesn't make a good movie, that's what I felt when I saw Walkout, the tale of a group of mexican americans (or chicanos as they are proud to be called) LA students in the late 60's, who fight, among other things, for the right of history recognition, respect of their heritage and equal treatment. So far so good, the fight for civil rights (Costa Gavras, Spike Lee, to name two directors who have acomplished great movies dealing political issues) can be material for the kind of films that stick in your soul for a lifetime, but Walkout falls short of achieving that goal, even though the ambientation is great, the movie is episodic and not very interesting. Its like a cable tv political panflet. I like Edward James Olmos and his passion for the latino cause, I hope his next project will be less obvious, that's what art and movies are about.

5 out of 5 stars "Simplemente me encanto".......2007-03-12

Felicidades.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, important part of LA history .......2007-03-01

I love this movie. The version I saw was an all but finished screening with the director a few weeks before the movie was shown on HBO. The movie had its cheesy moments but ultimately redeemed itself. I thought it was very well done.

I agree with the previous reviewer...this movie will make you proud of Chicano history the way Iron Jawed Angeles makes you proud of Women's History.

This delightful sequel to <I>Spy Kids</I> demonstrates once again writer-director Robert Rodriguez's remarkable gift for wild invention. Carmen and Juni Cortez (Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara) are now regular operatives for a spy agency, but a couple of rival spy kids are making their lives difficult. When an important gadget gets stolen, Juni gets blamed and loses his job--but Carmen hacks into the agency computer, reinstates him, and sends them off on a high-security mission to a mysterious island to clear the boy's name. The pace is zippy, every situation is crammed with dazzling eye-candy, and the cast is great--Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino return as the kids' parents, Steve Buscemi plays a crackpot scientist, and Ricardo Montalban comes in as the kids' grandfather. Fans of the classic <I>Sinbad</I> adventure movies will particularly enjoy the elaborate creatures that Carmen and Juni battle on the island. Pure fun. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

3 out of 5 stars I spy with my blue eye..........2007-06-16

Pint-sized OSS Junior agents, sister and brother Carmen (Alexa Vega) and Juni (Daryl Sabara) Cortez, are back for another spirited adventure in Spy Kids 2. Their newest and most dangerous mission takes them to a mysterious, hidden volcanic island where they meet a reclusive genetic scientist (Steve Buscemi) and his bizarre Noah's Ark of hybrid creatures which include the cat-fish, the bull-frog, and the Spork (sparrow / pork). Hot on their heels, eager to solve the mystery on the island and stop the world's imminent destruction first, are Carmen and Juni's rivals from OSS Junior, Gary (Matt O'Leary) and Gerti (Emily Osment) Giggles.

As the four kids head right into a perilous trap that could make them disappear forever, super spies Mom and Dad Cortez (Carla Gugino, Antonio Banderas) go after them, and their spy grandparents - "retired, but not tired" - played by Ricardo Montalban and Holland Taylor, round out the rescue party. But with their gadgets, gizmos and genetics, the Cortez kids don't need rescuing... or so they think.

Writer, director, editor, production designer, director of photography, re-recording mixer and composer (!) Robert Rodriguez has done something very unusual here: he's topped the popular original. Spy Kids 2 has a better plot, cooler special effects, and even more adventure than Spy Kids 1. It helps that all the same actors are back to play these likable characters, and Rodriguez was smart enough to add just enough new ones. Grandpa Cortez, in his high-tech wheelchair, is a not only a great role model, he's portrayed by the ideal actor for the role. The Giggles kids are perfectly annoying, and there's also a cavalcade of consistently cool character actors - Bucemi, Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, Bill Paxton, Mike Judge - that are sure to delight with their quirky portrayals.

The gadgets, such as the Dragon-Spy sub, the satellite linked watches that do everything but tell time, and the rocket powered hover shoes, are lots of fun, but it's the Ray Harryhausen-inspired creatures, mythic beasts and sword-fighting skeletons which are the most entertaining. Rodriguez walks the fine line of respecting without ripping off.

I guess it's not top secret; I heartily recommend that you treat the kids - or the kid in you - to Spy Kids 2 on the special edition DVD.

5 out of 5 stars spy kids 2.......2007-02-06

My daughter loves it, she is six and loves action kids movies. It is even entertaining enough for adults.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst movies ever made.......2006-09-05

This movie is horrible. I even found the terror that was Jaws: the Revenge better than this. I'll list some of the things that made this movie bad.
1. The acting was horrible
2. the special effect were even worse than the acting
3. The kids were smarter than the adults (thats how you know its a corny kids movie)
4. The jokes fell flat every singal time
5. The script was horrible
6. 95% of the movie you could tell was on a blue screen
I know they were targeting this movie for younger audiences but get real I've seen alot of family movies that both kids, teenagers, and adults can enjoy. I felt tortured threw this entire movie. I was Praying that it would end and I could leave. Don't buy this movie. Hell don't even rent it. Its just that bad.

5 out of 5 stars Great HD Movie excellently cast.......2006-08-18

The first thing I noticed when watching the movie was the excellent picture quality - it was 'filmed' in High Definition.

Apart from really enjoying the movie (I haven't seen Spy Kids 1 or 3), I found the audio commentary by Robert Rodriguez fantastic. So much so, I plan on buying the DVD, just so I can listen to this again (I borrowed the DVD from our local library).

What a talented and imaginative man Robert Rodriguez is. I also found that alot of his comments are also appropriate in many other areas of ones life, and they don't only relate to the movie industry.

The DVD contains a lot of extra special features and I found them most interesting.

In summary it was a really enjoyable movie, and the special features were superb.

5 out of 5 stars My Granddaughter.......2006-03-10

My granddaughter is nearly 3 and she loves this movie. She was born in China and has been here two years. She will watch this movie everytime she is at our house (every Friday). Good clean movie with lotsa action. She also loves the other two Spy Kids movies.

The adventures of pint-sized secret agents Juni and Carmen Cortes (Daryl Sabara and Alexa Vega) continue. As <I>Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over</I> opens, Juni has left the spy agency and launched a career as a private detective--but when he learns that his sister Carmen has disappeared into a nefarious multi-user computer game, he agrees to go in after her, with the assistance of his grandfather (Ricardo Montalban). Three-dimensional special effects launch us into a topsy-turvy world of battling robots, souped-up motorcycle races, frogs on pogo sticks, surfing on hot lava, and much, much more. The story is even more incoherent than an actual computer game--but the movie storms along, driven by writer/director/editor/everything-else Robert Rodriguez's sheer visual enthusiasm. Featuring Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, and everyone else who appeared in the first two <I>Spy Kids</I> movies. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

for a week and watched it 5 times and loved it. Believe me when you see this you are going to want to buy this like me! I have seen every one

Juni Cortez {Daryl Sabara} Must fight his way through the levels to save his sister and shut down the game at the same time. If he fails his mission,GAME OVER! I hope you will enjoy the dvd like I did!

This film represents Hugh Grant's first big bid at Hollywood stardom, on the heels of the success of <I>Four Weddings and a Funeral</I>. But he stumbled twice: first with this mundane comedy, then by being arrested after soliciting a prostitute near downtown Hollywood, the week before the film opened. Directed by Chris Columbus (<I>Mrs. Doubtfire</I>), <I>Nine Months</I> was a weak reworking of a French film about an aging bachelor (Grant) who can't decide whether to commit to the woman he loves (Julianne Moore). When she becomes pregnant, he still can't make up his mind and winds up blowing hot and cold on the subject of fatherhood, which causes tension in the relationship. There's a lot of low comedy involving Grant's best friend; Tom Arnold plays this ultra-married and child-ridden suburbanite, who makes fatherhood look like a living hell. Robin Williams has a funny cameo as a foreign doctor, but in the end, the sentiment is ladled on and Grant doesn't have nearly enough funny material to work with. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

Description

Sam (Hugh Grant) has it all - a wonderful girlfriend, a successful child psychology practice and a red Porsche. But he's faced with having something he never wanted when he learns his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) is expecting. The news sends the unflappable psychologist into a panic. Torn between advise given by a well-meaning but over-bearing couple, (Tom Arnold and Joan Cusack), and by his confirmed bachelor buddy (Jeff Goldblum), Sam's in serious danger of losing his mind and his girlfriend. He's got just nine months - give or take a week, according to their crazy Russian gynecologist (Robin Williams) - to grow up!

4 out of 5 stars Nine Months.......2006-11-13

We were really happy to find this film, we had this same film and loaned it out and it was damaged. So when we found it on Amazon we were real happy. The movies in great shape and we got it quickly so thanks a lot.

2 out of 5 stars When propaganda goes awry.......2006-11-04

I have to hope that this movie's makers really had good intentions, because that's the only thing that would save this movie. Perhaps, all they wanted was to create a funny light comedy that would show, without too much stress, one man's conversion from bachelorhood to parenthood (bypassing the marriage stage, for the most part) with they-lived-happily-ever-after finale.
What they ended up making is a pitiful, painful set of recycled stereotypes of manhood and womanhood; a story from the land where men are infintile, women long-suffering and sacrificial, and child psychologists can't cure themselves. Suffice to say that Julianne Moore's character has to bear her child almost to birth to be proposed to by the child's father. Apparently, while she was an inactive baby machine she didn't deserve such honor. In his good turn, Hugh Grant's character (the child's father) only feels the warm glow of fatherhood when he's told that the baby is a boy. You should see his face change from harried to beautified when the doctor delivers the news.
Whatever you do, don't let your kids watch this until they're out of college and can think for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, "It's the bloodly three percent".......2006-10-14

I've watched this movie many times since I've been ill, and I know it kept me from going nuts. I laughed out loud from one minute into the movie when Tom starts giving mouth to mouth to Samuel until the very end. My son had to come and check on me to see if I was OK since I was ill. There was never a dull moment. It's exactly how a lot of single guys would act when told there about to become a dad. Especially when their life is just perfect! I adore Hugh Grant, and I thougt the entire cast was terrific and superbly cast. The SUV scenes were truly great and well directed, as were all the others. Hugh brought tears to my eyes at the end of the movie when he picked up the baby and danced to "These Are The Days". Hugh you would make a great dad, and you certainly knew how to hold this baby, maybe YOU need to see the movie again. In my opinion it's right up there with "FWAAF" and "About a Boy" great movies.

2 out of 5 stars Mildly funny but highly irresponsible.......2006-08-01

This movie, often identified as a must-view DVD for expectant parents, certainly has its share of laughs. While the movie sometimes verges on a slapstick feel, the situations encountered by Hugh Grant and Tom Arnold provide enough humor to make the movie a workable comedy.

Why, then, a two-star rating? The answer lies with the film's perpetuation of common misconceptions about cats, pregnancy, and babies. In this movie, the father-to-be has a pet cat. Unfortunately, the expectant mother is the victim of out-of-date information suggesting that cats spread parasites and threaten babies. While it is certainly true that pregnant women should avoid cleaning the litterbox and that no infant should be left unattended with any pet, there is no credible evidence to suggest that cats and babies cannot live under the same roof.

The film does seem to redeem itself briefly when a jilted Hugh Grant is shown holding the cat during a party. The brief promise of redemption vanishes quickly when the cat is literally tossed aside by another character. After that point, the cat and its fate are never mentioned again, allowing the viewer to draw the least favorable conclusion.

Ironically, a book shown during the movie, "What to Expect When You're Expecting," reinforces the conclusion that cats and pregnancy are not mutually exclusive. It appears, however, that the makers of this film never actually read the book or absorbed its wisdom.

Of course, some viewers will be tempted to say that this is only a movie and that this reviewer should "lighten up," but movies have a surprising way of legimitizing behavior. While it is highly unlikely that someone would decide to abandon a cat based solely on this movie, it is possible that "Nine Months" could sway someone who is already contemplating abandonment and looking for affirmation that such behavior is acceptable. That possibility is enough to undermine a movie that would otherwise be an inoffensive and enjoyable comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Nine Months to Change Your Life.......2006-04-25

Hugh Grant is Samuel, a child psychologist whose patients have turned him off parenthood. When his long-time girlfriend Julianne Moore, has a surprise pregnancy, Sam has to tackle the prospect of having a kid of his own. The perils of sudden responsibility break up the parents-to-be with lots of comedic romantic antics to bring them back before the due date. An early Hugh Grant film in the US and a pre-superstardom Moore have a chemistry all their own.

5 out of 5 stars Sleepover.......2007-06-13

The movie "sleepover" is about a girl named Julie [Alexa Vega] who has a sleepover and invites 3 other girls. They do the usual sleepover stuff: website vandalism, frozen bra, makeovers, and fried Twinkies. Then Julie's old Stacey friend who became popular comes over and tells the girls that her and her friends made up a scavenger hunt and they want them to do it too. Julie agrees but she will only do it if Stacey agrees to a little deal, first one with all the stuff on the list and to get to the high school first wins a seat at the fountain [the high school lunch spot]. So Stacey prints it out and leaves. Julie and her friends do all the stuff on the list but at the same time have to worry about not getting caught being out of the house. The girls do all the stuff and make it to the high school but Stacey gets there at the same time, so they make another deal. Whoever gets the crown at the dance wins. Watch the movie to find out who gets the crown at the end.

I thought this was a great movie, one of Alexa's best. The best thing about this movie is that you can watch it over and over and it will never get boring. This was my favorite movie!

If you like funny situations and out of the ordinary adventures, this movie is great for you. This movie is more for girls 10-16 years old, because they probably can relate to all the girls in the movie better than a boy could.

4 out of 5 stars Nice, lovely, anything connected to this...........2007-02-03

Ok, I'm not a kid but I'm using this account from time to time as Iit's easier than creating my own. So... first of all, I watched it yesterday and I thought it was quite lovely and optimistic :) I hadn't planned watching it, it just appeared and I thouhgt "why not"?
We got here 4 14-years old girls who have just graduated from junior high and and going to high school. Julie (Alexa) is, i believe, the main caracter.
On the other hand we have Sarah Paxton (I've no idea what she was doing there. She looked like she was 30 years old. I'm suprised she's the same age as Alexa). She's ex-friend of Julie and since she's been dumped by a boy, she proposes a game.... .
Girls have done really well (exept for Sarah - I can't stand her. All film I was wondering where did a see this Mika girl. She was playing the younger sister of Romolas in "DD: Hawana Nights". Nice.
There's nothing to say about directing or photos. It was just... you know, a teenage movie.
Music done good, though.
4 stars - you don't watch a your watch, that's what matters.

Oh, and Sean Faris as This Steve guy - hunky :D

5 out of 5 stars family fun.......2007-01-10

I bought this at Walmart in the $5.50 bin. It's definately worth it. I love Alexa Vega and the other girls all create a fun chemistry that I wish I had with my friends. It's a good girl triump movie which seem to not happen anymore.

Steven Seagal needed a new approach to his standard head-busting heroics, so he teamed up with Keenen Ivory Wayans for this routine 1996 action flick. This time stone-faced Steve plays Los Angeles homicide detective Jack Cole, newly transplanted from New York and teamed up with Jim Campbell (Wayans). They're assigned to track down "The Family Man," a serial killer who earned his nickname by crucifying entire families and leaving religious graffiti as his calling card. The case heats up when the latest victim turns out to be Cole's ex-wife, and Cole is considered a primary suspect. That makes Seagal get really mad--you don't wanna get Seagal too upset, y'know--but he still has time to quote Buddhist wisdom and crack wise with Wayans, who plays it relatively straight as the practical half of this partnership. It's typical Seagal stuff all the way, with obligatory fight scenes every 10 minutes or so, but Seagal fans will enjoy it, and Brian Cox makes a suitably hissable villain. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

Steven Seagal stars as a cop on the trail of a serial murderer in this psychological action-thriller. Seagal is John Cole, a lieutenant specializing in serial murderers, who teams with a homicide detective (Keenen Ivory Wayans) to track an elusive killer.

3 out of 5 stars Some Twists on a Familiar Formula .......2007-03-07

This is not a bad Steven Seagal film. The plot is actually intriguing but did not live up to its potential due to some ineffective and uneven direction and choppy editing. The film works better as a standard detective drama forgoing anticipation of Seagal's usual physical antics.

5 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this movie!.......2006-03-23

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie as I do most of Steven Seagal's. As with any other actor, some movies are better than others. This was one of the ones I especially liked. I'll still be buying his movies as they come out on DVD.

3 out of 5 stars "Now get your ugly white a$$ outta here......".......2005-10-07

Typical Seagal fare, in which thick leather (and even alligator skin) trench coats replace the need for a decent plot. Seagal's paunch is ever present, and his penchant for food is made clear when during one scene he busts in on a private lunch meeting and starts sampling what appear to be enchiladas. At least its good to see Seagal poking fun at his own image, as one villain asks him to take his 'sensitive pony tail and sissy beads' and leave the restaurant. Said villain is met with a swift hand to the throat in response to this statement of course, but you can only ask Seagal to expose his sensitivities so far. One of the more humorous moments include the main villain threatening Seagal in a police station packed with officers, of all places, and Master Steven responding to this by telling the foe to get his 'ugly white a$$' out of the station. This unprecedented outburst of racial indignation is amusing if at all for the fact that Seagal himself is a white man. Just unreal. Look, this is a Seagal film, what do you need to know? He breaks 50 lbs of human bone via various joint locks, he has a pony tail, he is an agent of a state/federal department of some type. Oh yes, and he has a black partner, a situation that seems to be the norm in Seagal films. Prepare to laugh at the absurdity.

If you're looking for high pace serious action with a fair amount of comedy then this is the movie you should purchase.
Steven seagal is again at his best with an even talented and creative Keenan Ivory Wayans ( A low down dirty shame ).These two combined together in one movie equals a steal of a deal, It's like geting two movies for the price of one.
Trust me this movie is the bomb.

Rob Reiner, who used to be more interested in personal style as a filmmaker, continues to duck behind bland movies about important ideas with this based-on-fact film about the embattled white prosecutor (Alec Baldwin) who brought racist killer Byron De La Beckwith (James Woods) to justice after 30 years of failed attempts. Charged with the murder of civil rights leader Medgar Evers, Beckwith slimes up the film pretty well via Woods's somewhat showy performance, while Baldwin generously assumes the usual clichés surrounding reluctant heroes. Whoopi Goldberg is at her most stately as Evers's widow. The whole self-important production is dogged by the obvious thought that it might have played better (and to far more people than it did in theaters) on television. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars Final closure to an important chapter in civil rights history.......2007-05-11

`Ghosts of Mississippi' is the story based on factual events of the final trial of the man who murdered civil rights leader Medgar Evers in 1963. He was tried twice before but both times the case ended in hung juries. It is also a portrait of enduring patience in the fact that his widow, Myrlie Evers, had to wait 30 years for final justice, all the while knowing that her husband`s assassin remained a free man.

I can't honestly think of too many movies where I have seen Alec Baldwin and Whoopi Goldberg give such impressive acting performances as compared to their work here. They both fit their roles perfectly and it shows. On the other end of the spectrum, James Woods, who also did an outstanding job, is so into his character that it is almost spooky. The way he behaves and delivers his lines just gives the impression that you're looking at total hate and evil personified in a man.

To compliment the acting, the movie moves along at a nice pace and portrays the difficulties of preparing a case that is 3 decades old along with the still unresolved issues of racism still evident in the Mississippi climate. As for the trial itself, this is also a tense atmosphere that adds realism and intrigue to the movie. If I had to make a comparison, and this being based on similar types of events, I would have to say that this film ranks up there with `Mississippi Burning' which is also an excellent movie in its own right.

`Ghosts of Mississippi' is a fine example of solid acting and directing coupled with a strong, thought provoking story. This film is very enjoyable all the way through and I recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Justice After All These Years.......2007-02-16

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen, as it has just about everything in it to tug at your heart strings. A very serious movie, which also has a few great humorous moments too. The casting is just about perfect. Every character was very believable. Whoopi Goldberg wouldn't have been my choice to play Merlie Evers, but she did a pretty decent job in the role. I think the movie might have been better with an unknown in the part. Still, I can't imagine anyone doing a better job than Whoopi did. This is an important movie that helps keep alive the memory of the all but forgotten Medger Evers. I have watched this movie 3 or 4 times and I never get tired of it. James Woods is absolutely superb as the militant racist. Alec Baldwin does a great job. All the supporting actors and actresses are believable and do a great job as well. Racists probably won't like this movie, but those of us who have a sense of justice will cheer the fact that a murder conviction against a white man for murdering a black man finally occurred after what was way too long a time. Justice sometimes takes a while. Based on true events, which makes it even more compelling. The movie sustains a continued level of suspense throughout and keeps you interested all the way through. This movie is also more suitable for a younger audience than two other very good movies with similar themes, A Time to Die and Mississippi Burning, which are more graphic and perhaps more troubling to younger audiences.

4 out of 5 stars Ashes bellow the tapestry! .......2006-11-23

From time the opened veins of the social body are shown with all its awful and merciless reality, some ghosts of the past. A lawyer decides top reopen a case after thirty years. Straightforward movie that possibly falls in the climax punch to make it soar. The earnestness and sobriety of the great filmmakers of the past is evident, although the cast all the best they can to carry on a secure port.

5 out of 5 stars History portrayed responsibly........2006-08-08

Medgar Evers was a key person in the civil rights movement. Though as I remember it, we were not taught much about him during Black History Month.

I remember reading how he encouraged a reporter doing a story on him to focus on the Emmet Till story, because it was an example of the type of justice Black people received in Mississippi. So he was instrumental helping to shine a national spotlight on racism and the resulting violence against Black people including lynching.

His murder cut short his important work as civil rights leader at a time when he was needed most. The movie centers on the journey of his widow to gain justice for him, 30 years after his murder by Byron De La Beckwith. De La Beckwith was played chillingly by James Woods who gave an oscar worthy performance.

The movie from all the news accounts I read while following the case sticks close to what really happened. The performances were excellent especially Whoppi Goldberg and Alex Baldwin.

Baldwin's character is in some ways a metaphor for mainstream americans who, despite trying, are still unable to grasp that the Civil Rights movement was about much more than being able to eat in a white resturant.

I watched this with my mother, on DVD, and when Baldwin's character explains to his children why Evers fought for equality so "Black people could eat in the same reasturants" my mother said to the screen- " We fought to save our children from suffering the unjust fate of Emmet Till."

Baldwin convincingly portrays a person who because of his involvement with this case is forced to confront the overt racism he has always ignored in his family and in himself.

Goldberg portrays the manerisms of Myrlie Evers so perfectly, I had an opportunity to attend a speech she gave, and only then could I fully appreciate the subtle nuances of Goldberg's performance, which was also oscar worthy.

My only real critique was the casting of Yolanda King as Myrlie Evers' daughter. You just don't believe that Yolanda King and Whoppi Goldberg are mother and daughter. Yolanda King looks older than her in every scene. The director either did not try, or could not compensate using makeup, camera angles or digital effects.

I have not seen Yolanda King in anything else but next to Whoppi Goldberg she seems like a bad actress. It is not too bad for the film because she does not have many scenes.

I know from interviews including one he gave with Myrlie Evers on Oprah that for Rob Reiner this film was a labor of love, and this probaly influenced his decision to cast Yolanda King in this part. Many other young actresses could have done justice to this part and been believeable as Whoppi Goldberg's daughter Kimberly Elise comes to mind.

But this one mistake does not take away from the overall amazing quality of this movie - it is a must see.

"Girls are brutal," a father warns his young son in the course of <I>Odd Girl Out</I>. "They… tear each other to bits over the smallest things." Director Tom McLoughlin's 2005 film proves it, too, offering up a harrowing tale of one teenager's horrendous treatment at the hands of her high school classmates. When we meet Vanessa (Alexa Vega, also seen in <I>Spy Kids</I>), she's a reluctant member of a group of spoiled, snooty girls who rule the school hallways like designer-dressed harpies. But when she betrays "best friend" and clique leader Stacey (<I>Malcolm in the Middle</I>'s Leah Pipes), it all starts to go south; little matter that said betrayal is actually concocted by the genuinely vicious Nikki (Elizabeth Rice). What begins as a relatively petty campaign of text messages, rumor-mongering, and daily ostracism soon escalates into full-scale torment and cruelty, including a particularly nasty website, an invitation to a party that doesn't exist (the better to humiliate the eager and insecure Vanessa), and her near-tragic reaction to these events. McLoughlin's resume includes TV shows based on <I>A Nightmare on Elm Street</I> and <I>Friday the 13th</I>, so it's no surprise that this film has a stylized, horror film vibe; there is nothing remotely light-hearted about this story (loosely based on Rachel Simmons' non-fiction book <I>Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture Of Aggression In Girls</I>), which focuses not only on Vanessa's nightmare but on the well-meaning but futile efforts of her mother (Lisa Vidal) to help. But having stoked the viewer to expect Stacey, Nikki, and their co-conspirators to get the comeuppance they so richly deserve, the director delivers a largely unsatisfying denoument. Too bad, because up until then, <I>Odd Girl Out</I> is a real eye-opener, and a frighteningly accurate account of the living hell that is high school life. <I>--Sam Graham</I>

Despite that, the movie itsself is very good and needed to be seen

5 out of 5 stars Must see for all.......2007-04-28

All of the reviews thus far have said most of what I would say. It is definitely a must see for all parents and their children (girls and boys). However, I must add that girls and parents that watch this movie need to look closely at all of the angles in it. Sure Vanessa is the clear victim and it is brought to you as bluntly as it is in life. I was that girl off and on growing up (although I was never driven to suicide). For me, this happened in junior high and high school, but it also happened to me in grade school and as an adult. So, parents of young girls should also take note of this film.

That being said, I also want to call attention to another aspect of the movie. It is so easy to be Stacy too. If you notice she reluctantly takes part in the bullying, if at all. She only goes along for the ride because of her own insecurities. This is not to say that we should take her side or excuse her. Just that it is easy to be that bystander who does nothing. That can be the most damaging part of it all. In this case it is a best friend that could have ended it, or at least been a true friend.

I have to admit that when it happened to someone else back when I was in junior high, I didn't say anything. I didn't take part in any way, but that doesn't excuse me either. I should've said something or done something. It is something I regret. Luckily, the people I knew back then weren't driven as far as Vanessa. And I did not sit back idly and do nothing when it happened in High School.

5 out of 5 stars Odd Girl Out.......2007-04-15

This was a great movie, every parent should be required to watch this!!! Oh yeah, good service from Amazon too!-

5 out of 5 stars A must-see for parents, daughters, sons and teachers.......2007-04-13

I watched and recorded this movie when it was shown on TV, so I guess you can say I own it, but I do want to get the DVD some day. I was in reality who Vanessa is in the movie, the "odd girl out", bullied in school to the max, and no one seemed to hear. I strongly believe that parents and teachers need to be much more aware of this problem, and they need to take action and severly punish bullies. Children can be cruel and vicious, but parents and educators need to take a stand. This is a great, deep movie with great actors.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie for all girls to see!!!.......2007-04-01

I am an advisor with a Girl Scout group. The girls are in 6th and 7th grade. They loved this movie! It provided a great platform for discussion on the ways girls interact with each other. We didn't have to talk about their behavior - it was less threatening and easier to talk about the behavior of the girls from the movie. The mothers of the girls got an update on the modern day way to bully each other - cyber bullying. Knowledge is power. Movies like this open the way for discussion between mothers and their girls.

David introduces Dianne to a young girl (Alexa Vega) from a troubled home as a "mother's helper," and things begin to change. Julia gains a best friend and Dianne finds renewed strength and hope, but David must wait patiently for a chance to reveal his true feelings. 5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-02-07

This movie reminds me of a movie that happens all the time. It was so heart felt and romantic.

5 out of 5 stars A very thoughtful and thought provoking film.......2007-01-31

I've seen this movie several times. It was at the most recent viewing that several thoughts came to mind. I worked in a major medical center for several years and on occassion my clinic would see children who were severely disabled. I would think what kind of life were the kids and their parents having - spending many days in the hospital. I still don't know if I have an answer but the film has me thinking about it again. I can empathize with the husband not being able to deal with the catastrophy (from his viewpoint) of a disabled child. My ex-wife was diagnosed with a possible cancer (ultimately found to be not a cancer). When she was describing how she was feeling (very very scared) I didn't know what to say so ultimately just sat there like a dope and looked at her. Not my best performance as a husband. This movie brought that scene in my own life back very vividely. Watching the mom's helper after she had been injured in a car accident apologizing for not being able to take care of Julia and Julia's mom and her alcoholic mother brought back other memories of my alcoholic father and how at the age of 12 I was trying to figure out ways to make him not drink. I never did come up with a solution but seeing the torment in the child (who was apparently younger than me) brought the moments of over 40 years ago back to me. So for me, this movie was thought provoking on many issues about my own life. I'm not sure that this is a movie for everyone. Some have said it has a good ending. I'm not sure. There is a pending death and you won't if Amy's mom says sober. There are uncertainties in this movie just like in real life. But at the conclusion you are at least hopeful that things will work out ok for everyone. Ultimately this was a hard movie for me to watch but at the same time it was beneficial. The acting was exceptional and the feelings and emotions they all conveyed were easy to understand and feel. I recommend this movie highly but I'm not sure it is a movie that kids will easily understand. Parents should stand by for lots of questions which have very hard answers.

5 out of 5 stars Feel Good Movie.......2006-07-26

As many people as possible should watch this movie. It never fails to leave the watcher with a warm feeling and that all will be well. Makes strong arguments for family values. Kimberly Williams is superb in her role as a single mother struggling to raise a disabled child. Campbell Scott also gives a commendable performance as the silent admirer. Blair Brown is the perfect mother to Kimberly's character. Do watch it!
