An engrossing, 1983 television miniseries based on a bestselling work of historical fiction by Herman Wouk, <I>The Winds of War</I> is an admirable production reminiscent of the era of Hollywood's epic features. At the center of the globe-trotting story is the Henry family, whose laconic but straight-shooting patriarch is United States Navy Commander Victor "Pug" Henry (Robert Mitchum), sent to Hitler's Berlin in the spring of 1939 as a naval attaché to the then-neutral American embassy. A keen observer, Pug deduces that Germany is not preparing for war on two fronts (western Europe on one side, Russia on the other) despite what the Nazis want the world to believe, meaning that Hitler must be working out a secret peace deal with Stalin. Pug's prescience makes him a favorite eyewitness in Berlin for Franklin D. Roosevelt (Ralph Bellamy); the irony is that Pug is far less sagacious when it comes to the realities of his family.

Polly Bergen plays unhappy wife Rhoda, who turns to A-bomb developer Palmer Kirby (Peter Graves) for comfort. Pug's 19-year-old daughter, Madeline (Lisa Eilbacher), defies her iron-willed dad's decision that she stay in school by taking a job for CBS radio in New York. Compliant son Warren (Ben Murphy) can't seem to get Pug's attention despite doing everything right (including becoming a Navy pilot, eventually present at the bombing of Pearl Harbor). By contrast, Pug spends more time fuming over black sheep son Byron (Jan-Michael Vincent), who is working in increasingly Fascist Italy as an assistant to an art historian (John Houseman) while trying hard to woo the latter's exasperating niece, Natalie (Ali MacGraw). The story of Byron and Natalie takes up much of <I>The Winds of War</I> as the pair traverse Poland during the shock of Hitler's 1939 assault, and Jewish Natalie later finds herself trapped inside Italy facing the threat of concentration camps. Before <I>The Winds of War</I> ends, each of these characters will end up in places and situations, and with historical figures (Churchill, Mussolini) as well as ordinary people, they would not have anticipated outside the pressures of war. The program's length and smart script allow for a lot of ideas and background detail that pull a viewer in--happily. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars Historical Epic.......2007-06-20

The Winds of War is an excellent historical account of events leading up to America's entry into World War II. It follows the lives of the fictional Henry family as they are intertwined into actual events.

5 out of 5 stars Great book plot adapted to video.......2007-04-13

I had read "The Winds of War" before I saw the miniseries. It is not usual for a movie script to convey what makes a book great but this not the case with "The Winds of War". Robert Mitchum plays a great role as a naval officer who sees himself, due to incredible multi-language capability, serving in naval intelligence in Europe and visiting the hot spots of that continent during the late 1930`s; like Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Soviet Union, United Kingdom ect. His younger son`s role plays out like the young are and how blinded they can be by love. His wife and her uncle roles are well played and show us those people who still think that a river will not be flooded even though they can hear the water rushing down its course. All the roles are well played. A good miniseries.

excellent telling of history. the way this is done you seem to learn more history than just reading a book. great cast.

5 out of 5 stars The Winds of War.......2007-03-09

Excellent. One of the best mini series made. The series is based on the novel, The Winds of War by Herman Wouk, and follows the book very well. There is only one catch, this is only half the story. The second novel War and Rememberance, which was also made into a mini series is just as good.

Clean white sand and a cool predawn sky are the backdrops for this stunningly produced video, complete with an upbeat New Age soundtrack. Don't be put off by the MTV-like camera work, as this video constitutes an excellent, well-balanced workout. Ali MacGraw and a supporting cast of something-for-everyone models work through this 50-minute routine, overseen by yoga master Erich Schiffman. The first minutes focus on ujjayi breathing, then MacGraw leads us through a complete practice of shoulder stretches, sun salutations, back bends and twists, and standing poses. No equipment is required, but a sticky mat is recommended. Unlike other videos targeted for beginners, <I>Yoga Mind & Body</I> does not offer modifications for difficult poses and so is best suited for practitioners with some previous experience. <I>--Jhana Bach</I>

5 out of 5 stars Still the best after 13 years!.......2007-06-19

I bought this yoga tape on VHS 13 years ago. I've recommended it to my family and friends. Now, it's on DVD, and I'm 44 years old, I still find that it's the BEST one on the market. Study it diligently about 3 times before you practice. Then, practice and enjoy it for a lifetime!

5 out of 5 stars Haven't slept or felt better!!.......2007-06-17

I have osteoarthritis in my lower back and also problems with my left wrist. I started doing this DVD 2 weeks ago and my back and wrist are feeling 85% better. The exercises help put your body into alignment and also strengthen your muscles. By the end you are totally relaxed and feel like you have had a full body massage. I have been sleeping much better and night and have not experienced the aches and pains in my joints that I ususally do. It is an excellent workout for the whole body.

You have to keep in mind that you need to work up to the level of the people on the DVD and only go into the twists and back bends until you feel a light stretch and slowing work up to it. Otherwise you my get injured. But you will not get bored as this DVD is something to keep growing with.

It is beautifully and professionally done!

4 out of 5 stars Strongly recommened for all.......2007-06-12

The music is very relaxing and the instructor is not annoying like many others or boring like R.Y.(sorry). My only critique is the lack of downward dogs.

Beginners - There is no explanation of how to do the poses, but you should not practice until you have read something or taken a class any way. While it isn't simple, if you watch it once you will do well within the first 2 practices. Once you feel comfortable add to your collection and you will see that many DVD's are lacking the peacefulness of this practice.

Beyond Beginner - This is very good for light days.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Yoga Workout that I STILL use all the time!.......2007-05-13

I read in a prior review this DVD standing the test of time, and I couldn't have said it better myself. I bought it on VHS in 1994 and recently purchased the DVD. I have other Yoga DVD's I like, but this one ends up in my player over and over again STILL. Excellent music, with a workout that is good for a beginner and challenging enough for a more advanced practitioner. My only complaint is that there isn't MORE like this!

5 out of 5 stars Always my favorite.......2007-05-05

This was the first yoga media I purchased and I'm returning to buy it on DVD. I've bought many other tapes I like and use (Rodney Yee's, for example), but this is the one I like best. It is challenging and yet not overwhelming (good for beginners and for people who've been practicing for a while) and it makes possible a vivid sense of renewal and peace. Unlike many yoga programs, it focuses on breathing. Focus on breath would seem to be a no-brainer with yoga videos, but unfortunately it isn't; many yoga videos seem to treat yoga as if it were simple stretching. This video can seem long from the description (at least when compared to half-hour yoga videos) but I've never had it seem long in practice. The practice time actually flies by and is very enjoyable. I'm hopeful that Eric Schiffman (the yoga master for this Ali McGraw & friends video) will create another yoga video one of these days ... ;)

Strife-torn America wanted a meat-and-potatoes romance in the late '60s, and the country embraced Erich Segal's slim, generic-sounding novel in a big way. It did so again for the film adaptation in 1970, starring Ryan O'Neal as a law student who defies his rich and powerful father (Ray Milland) on every issue, including the former's love for a music student (Ali MacGraw). The two marry, start life together...and then the Grim Reaper turns up at the door. Directed by Arthur Hiller (The In-Laws), the film ends up lacking the kind of stylistic boost that might have made it a must-see for the ages. But its faithfulness to the book's uncomplicated and, yes, moving intentions is pretty solid. O'Neal is convincing as a nice guy who's as bullheaded in his own way as his steely father (a nice job by Milland), and MacGraw has a way of getting under one's skin. A viewer just has to try not laughing at the refrain, "Love means never having to say you're sorry." <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Album Details

5 out of 5 stars Captured Perfectly.......2007-05-28

I imagine that the movie must make Erich Segal proud as it's very true to the novel and captures the characters perfectly. As I read, and re-read love story the faces of McGraw and O'Neal are in my minds. The movie is tragic, and beautiful all at once, just like the book, and is in the same tone and timing as the book. If you loved the novel, the movie will not disappoint you.

5 out of 5 stars Love Story.......2007-04-11

I saw this as a teenager and have always loved it. What a beautiful story of love and loss. It helps you remember how short life is and how important the little things are.

5 out of 5 stars Love Story....I loved it !.......2007-03-09

Great Movie...the quality of the disc was great ! It was very quick getting to me. I bought two copies of it..one for My Parents since I was named after the movies main character. Thank You I will buy again from the seller.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-02-24

I love this rather corny, cheesy love story which has a very 70's movie feel. If you like 70's films you will love this. I am not sure this film would have been well received if it had been made today but with 70's movies you kind of expect a film like this. All in all it is solid on all counts - acting, writing and directing. It has being accused of being morbid and manipulative but I think the subject matter was handled with maturity and in a way was uplifting in the end. Even though you know what is going to happen you can watch this over and over again and each time its a trip back in nostalgia - back to a time when Hollywood still made movies like this.

3 out of 5 stars "Love knows not its own depth, until the hour of separation.".......2007-01-07

The sentimentality of "Love Story" ("What can you say about a 25-year-old girl who died?") is a hearty welcome retreat to the past... There is nothing to spoil love, trust, confidence or even the events... Jenny seems to die... She just escapes in loveliness...

Jenny (Ali MacGraw) is half of a pretty young married students from a working class background... And Oliver (Ryan O'Neal) is from a very wealthy family... Both have the predictable problems with disapproving parents... Both struggle along through hard times, until Oliver obtains a fine job with his own merit... When Jenny tries to get pregnant, the doctor finds out that she has an incurable disease, and has a very short time to live...

Ryan O'Neal plays well the intense sensitive rebel, giving a heart-breaking performance as the ultra-rich man's son who works to pay his way through law school when his father won't...

Ali MacGraw is good and touching in her portrait of Jenny, the dying heroine, the poor baker's daughter studying classical music at Radcliffe, the smart young girl who gives up her plans to study in Europe in order to marry Oliver... She never missed a 'shred of her beauty' in her role...

Ray Milland is the 60-year-old Oliver Barrett III... He is a strong, articulate, civilized millionaire from Boston who refuses to support his son in marrying a girl of such low social stature... He commands him instead to finish law school...

John Harley is Phil, the father of Jenny... For him, "Father's love is something to cherish and respect."

There is three sequences that I liked the most in the film:

- Jenny and Oliver wonderful kissing scene... From this point on, both were entirely engrossed with each other, ready to risk anything for love...

- Oliver's long day search looking for Jenny, until he sees her sitting, outside, on a stair... She forgot her keys... Jenny is comforted by Oliver who tries to apologize for his continual disputes... Jenny, all shaken, and with tears in her eyes and with an emotional voice stops him with words of deep affection: "Love means never having to say you're sorry."

- Oliver, sitting alone and lost to the world, uncertain and perplexed, unable to understand Jenny's tragic fate... If Jenny could spend an hour in his mind, a minute in his heart, a second in his soul to discover what he really feels loving her... Why Jenny has to die so young? Why destiny is against us sometimes, smashing all our hopes and happiness? Why we feel so impotent in front of the will of God? Why can't we understand that we are 'blessed with Life,' and this is our great gift, our true treasure! Barrett's millions could never save Jenny!

The Lebanese poet Khalil Gibran said once: "Love knows not its own depth, until the hour of separation." And let me say that 'nothing is more beautiful than the love that has weathered the storms of Life.' They say: Time mends a broken heart and true love never ends... But if true love never ended then time wouldn't have to mend... So "Love Story" was followed by "Oliver's Story".

Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw are splendid and beautifully matched... Arthur Hill's sincere direction commend the picture to a wide audience eager to a flood of tears...

"Love Story" won 7 Academy Award nominations and Frances Lai - touching music - mixed by Bach, Mozart and Handel, won an Oscar, enriching the beauty of the film...

An intense, tough-looking leading actor is seen: Tommy Lee Jones in his film debut...

Amazon.com essential video

It's better than the 1994 remake starring Kim Basinger and husband Alec Baldwin, but this 1972 thriller relies too heavily on the low-key star power of Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, and the stylish violence of director Sam Peckinpah, reduced here to a mechanical echo of his former glory. McQueen plays a bank robber whose wife (MacGraw) makes a deal with a Texas politician to have her husband released from prison in return for a percentage from their next big heist. But when the plan goes sour, the couple must flee to Mexico as fast as they can, with a variety of gun-wielding thugs on their trail. MacGraw was duly skewered at the time for her dubious acting ability, but the film still has a raw, unglamorous quality that lends a timeless spin to the familiar crooks-on-the-lam scenario. As always, Peckinpah rises to the occasion with some audacious scenes of action and suspense, including a memorable chase on a train that still grabs the viewer's attention. Not a great film, but a must for McQueen and Peckinpah fans. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars COOL.......2007-06-14

Steve McQueen is the epitomy of cool and this movie proves it.

5 out of 5 stars Getting away with it.......2007-05-06

One of the many things that gives 1972's The Getaway the edge over its now almost-forgotten remake is that, unlike Alec Baldwin, Steve McQueen doesn't act like a movie star - he is a movie star. From the days when cool was what you were, not what you wore or owned, the plot itself is nothing special: Steve McQueen's bank robber is sprung from jail to pull a job with wife Ali MacGraw and has to hightail it to Mexico with both the relentless double-crossing Al Lettieri and numerous Texas mobsters in hot pursuit. Like most chase thrillers, you've seen it before: it's what Peckinpah does with it that counts, and Peckinpah does plenty. Most of Peckinpah's usual trademarks can be found in the margins, from children's fascination with violence to the Hellfire and brimstone preacher whose radio sermon goes unheard, and the action scenes are superbly staged - especially the hotel shootout and the lovingly filmed shooting up of a police car - but just as importantly he keeps a clear focus on his characters. The film's emotional terrain is as harsh as the barren landscape the ensuing chase is set against, with the odds on McQueen and MacGraw's marriage making it just as touch-and-go as whether they will make it across the border in one piece, their road to possible marital redemption through ordeal mirrored with the fast-track to Hell that hostage couple Sally Struthers and Jack Dodson take chauffeuring Lettieri's perverse wounded animal on their trail.

It's probably Sam Peckinpah's last truly successful film before self-indulgence, laziness and too much booze and drugs took their toll on his work. True, it's a purely commercial piece that has none of the personal passion that drove The Wild Bunch or The Ballad of Cable Hogue, but it's put together with a level of genuine artistry that's way above the norm for the genre: the editing of the first twenty minutes alone, with its freeze-frames and non-linear structure, is remarkably adventurous and successful. Both perfectly representing the state of mind and frustration and disorientation of McQueen's character in a way that is both complex and yet entirely accessible and transforming what could have been bog-standard exposition into something much more memorable, it's strikingly effective. Far more entertaning than it has any right to be.

(On an incidental note, although Walter Hill claimed that little of his screenplay made it to the screen (the bleak ending of Jim Thompson's novel is replaced by a much sweeter and more optimistic one), it's interesting to note how much of the film he would rework in his own The Driver, from the destruction of a car in a key setpiece to the train sequence with a very (un)lucky bagman.)

Warners' 2.35:1 widescreen DVD is a good transfer, with a brief 'virtual commentary' by Peckinpah and the two stars drawn from radio interviews, a full-length commentary byPeckinpah biographers and the film's strikingly awful original theatrical trailer.

5 out of 5 stars MCQUEEN'S TRIBUTE TO BOGART AND CAGNEY.......2007-04-30

This is one of my favorite Steve McQueen films because it has action, romance, violence and comedy. I enjoy watching this film because every scene is in there for a reason and you find out more and more as the movie goes on. Unlike most of today's stars, you can count on a Mcqueen movie to be great, he delivers. I enjoy films by Bogart and Cagney and this film is similar to some of their films.

3 out of 5 stars Not Peckinpah's best.......2006-09-12

Doc McCoy (Steve McQueen) has been granted parole by a man named Beynon under the condition that he robs a bank! Thats story idea behind this Peckinpah film. It moves along fairly slowly, until about halfway through when there is a chase scene inside a train. That was far and away the best part of the movie. Then the pace slows down again and continues that way pretty much until the end of the picture.

Ali MacGraw is gorgeous but her acting is not. She doesn't show a moment of emotion in the whole film, and her line delivery is just plain bad. You would think that since she was actually in a real life relationship with McQueen at the time they would have some sort of on screen chemistry, but alas that is not the case.

Steve McQueens acting, as you might expect is a little better but I think he was held back by the dialog. There isn't a lot of dialog, but when there is it isn't all that impressive or important.

I found the sub-plot to be one of the most interesting parts of the movie. It involves a mans wife falling in love(?) with Rudy, the other criminal who is hunting down McQueen. Rudy forces a doctor and his wife to bandage up his shoulder and then forces them both to drive him to Texas. At first the wife seems to like Rudy but you think "She is just trying to lull him into a false sense of security" but then as the film goes on you see that is not the case. The fact that a woman falls in love with a bad bad man is nothing new, but to do so enthusiastically and almost defiantly in front of the man who loves you is just a horrible thing to do to someone and I found it to be the most poignant part of the entire film. I can't say as I blame the husband for his reaction.

This isn't Peckinpahs best film. Apparently McQueen, who was a big star at the time, had a lot of sway over how the film was written, edited, and even scored; so maybe it isn't really Peckinpahs fault. Apparently he disowned the film after he saw the final cut. That may have been wise.

3 out of 5 stars Who Sam really wanted to play the Carol Ainsley McCoy role........2006-08-10

Well, it wasn't Ali MacGraw for sure. Sam wanted and promissed the role to Stella Stevens. Stella was stunning in Sam's "The Balad Of Cable Hogue" and should have been nominated for an Oscar for it. Sam was also impressed, as it turned out to be her role of a lifetime. Sam couldn't sell it to the head of Paramount, Robert Evans though, and being married to Ali as Robert was at the time, Ali got the McCoy role for "The Getaway" instead of Stella. The movie is much poorer for it.

Philip Roth's novel of Jewish identity and assimilation in the suburbs of New York gets a spirited comic reading in this 1969 film, which marked the acting debut of model Ali McGraw (and who thought that was a good idea?). Actually, she's pretty good as the Jewish princess whose father has made a fortune in plumbing supplies. Richard Benjamin, who went on to become an odd sex symbol of the '70s, had just the right comic twist as the young man who can't overcome McGraw's middle-class morality with his sense of passion and romance. Jack Klugman is outstanding as her hard-driving and unyieldding father. A touchstone film. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

4 out of 5 stars Philip Roth, please speak up!.......2007-04-16

First, the film which was written and set in Newark, New Jersey and Livingston, New Jersey was replaced by the Bronx, New York and Westchester County, New York. The characters remain the same but the setting which I always find crucial in Roth's stories are often disregarded in favor of something more familiar. Brenda and Neil come from two different worlds. Richard Benjamin and Ali McGraw are both excellent as the young couple and make an impressive film debut in this film. Surprisingly, Susan Lucci has an uncredited role in the film. Nan Martin and Jack Klugman are excellent as Brenda's upscale parents. Just because Neil and Brenda are Jewish, doesn't mean that they don't have problems. They do because Neil is a poor Bronx librarian living with his aunt and uncle while Brenda is rich and lives in Westchester county with a housekeeper and multiple telephones in the house, a rarity in those days. The story remains intact but I would like to see Philip Roth talk about his novel made into a film. I think the author speaking out would have made me want to give five stars instead of four.

4 out of 5 stars Great social commentary.......2007-03-26

I first saw this movie on HBO around 1990 and immediately took to it. It provides great insight into Jewish social sensibilities in Greater New York during the 1950s. The 2 principal actors, Richard Benjamin and Ali MacGraw, are well-suited for their respective roles. In the midst of a July-September romance, Neil and Brenda expose various prejudices, while trying to conform to expectations placed on them by their parents and by society. We all know that a rich Daddy's princess from Briarcliff Manor wouldn't really develop a serious romance with a poor boy from the Bronx, but it is still interesting to see her go through the motions. When the academic year returns, Brenda finds a convenient way to drop Neil without saying so much. This leaves her free to go back to Radcliffe to continue pursuing her MRS. degree.

2 out of 5 stars Trivial and Dated.......2007-01-25

I remember seeing this movie in the late 1960's and thought it a decent comedy. However with the perspective of some 40 years, I now find it trivial. That is, a wandering aimless sequence of dated cliche's. Perhaps Roth's novel would fare better. Even Jack Klugman, who would normally dominate a scene, seems laid back. At the same time as I purchased this film, I also purchased "Lovers and Other Strangers." The latter has certainly withstood the test of time and I would recommend it highly for someone who wants to see a good comedy.

2 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Just Don't Watch the Ending.......2005-09-24

The movie is extremely witty and provides for loads of laughs while still doing quick moral lessons. The actors in this do an incredible job. The only problem is the ending, which happens to be the last 4-5 minutes, once they reach the hotel. This last scene just doesnt make sense in terms of the rest of the movie. There isn't enough evidence throughout the movie that this can end so abruptly. Theres nothing out of the way or jumpy in terms of the speed of their relationship at times, and yet at the end, it is incredibly confusing just what everyone's feelings are of the situation besides that of the mother of the girl. The boy leaves, leaving the audience to use their own experiences to fill in the blanks. I seems, then, that the ending says there were no morals that they were going for in the ending, but to merely provide a faceplate for people to ponder, agree with, or be totally confused about, as I am. I suggest watching it up until the end of the summer (in the movie). "The Graduate" was much better....watch that...

2 out of 5 stars Good flick - Horrible transfer.......2007-04-23

This is the first time I've run into a to-DVD transfer that is so horrible that I feel I need to add to the reviews. If it wasn't for the movie, it'd get 0 stars. Aspect ratio is off (thank you PowerDVD for allowing me to fix that), sound level is low (need to turn volume up to max) and sound quality not much better. Picture quality fairly fuzzy. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-02-16

The hit movie that also got a song name after it and it was called Convoy. Kris Kristofferson starred in this picture as Rubber Duck aka Martin Penwald. Also starring in this picture was Ali MacGraw playing the role of Melissa and Ernest Borgnine plays the role of sheriff Lyle Wallace aka Cottonmouth. Rubber Duck stops at restaurant along with two other truckers. When the drivers get into a ruckus with local law officials that puts the truckers on the run. Enters Sheriff Lyle Wallace, who now has a problem with the Rubber Ducks attitude, and sets out to bring him in for justice. Enter Ali MacGraw who's a hitch hiker that the duck gives a ride to. As the duck travels down the highway with sheriff Wallace chasing him he starts to notice that a line of trucks are following him. Things get out of hand when Sheriff Wallace takes a friend of the duck and throws him in jail. All in all, I give this movie an 8. The only thing I really didn't care for was the ******. Other then that the movie was a good one.

Don't be fooled by the cover. This is NOT a collector's edition letterbox edition. The film's original 2.35:1 widescreen has been bizarrely changed to 1.85:1. The result is an unpleasant warped, squished image. It is such a staggeringly pointless and inept thing to do, I contacted Cheezy Flicks for an explananation. They blamed the "third party" who supplied them with the transfer. If so, shame on them for selling it anyway. A cynical piece of junk. Avoid.

4 out of 5 stars STEVE MCQUEEN's GREAT GETAWAY!!!.......2007-04-11

THE HD DVD transfer for the 1972 version of The Getaway is excellent. Very sharp and color saturated. The soundtrack could have been improved beyond the 2 channel by adding some surround effects which are few to none. Some friends have reported some sound synchronization issues in chapter 13 when played in the second generation TOSHIBA HD players. Hopefully this will be corrected with the firmware update already available from TOSHIBA.
By the way, the aspect ratio for this film is 2.35:1 and NOT 1.85:1 as advertised.
Overall, a very good enjoyable addition to the HD collection.

4 out of 5 stars McQueen back in action.......2007-03-10

Just checked out Warner's upcoming duo of Steve McQueen classics on HD-DVD -- "Bullitt" and "The Getaway." This is big news in guysville: Hand us a Steve McQueen action flick in a trick new video format and life is very, very good.

It's hard to watch the old DVDs after seeing the high-def, but as with most older films processed for HD, there are a few issues.

These movies come from a dicey period for film stock, especially "The Getaway," so they don't have the punch, pop and clarity of, say, older Technicolor titles like "Mutiny on the Bounty." Skin tones tend to be ruddy, contrasts are jacked up and some detail is lost to the darker bias. On "The Getaway," the audio sounds over processed, like when the amp goes to 11 -- I almost prefer the DVD version's sonics. The HD "Bullitt" audio nails it, though -- warm, realistic voices, great environmental detail, big bangs.

These are quibbles because an A-B comparison is no contest at all. The old DVDs look flat and lifeless compared with the HD-DVDs. And they were decent DVDs, special editions from just a year ago. (Both of these high-def discs port over the extras from the latest DVDs. "Bullitt" has an additional extra about editing for 1080p HD. "Getaway" add several more bonus features about the movie.)

Now that the studios have run through a lot of the easy-sell titles, we can expect more and more cool HD titles like these.

4 out of 5 stars Pulp Fiction at its most authentic.......2007-03-09

I'm not so familiar with Sam Peckinpah's career as I have only seen this and The Osterman Weekend (which I hated) but you can tell from his style that he has certainly influenced a lot of modern day directors. The perfect widescreen photography, quick editing (but not a blur, I should add) and dramatic use of slow-motion give the action in The Getaway an authentic edge. And all done on a low-budget too.

Adapted from a Jim Thompson novel by Walter Hill (his macho characteristics are all in there), the story has newly-freed jailbird Carter McCoy forced into a bank robbery by crime boss Jack Benyon. He's also forced to work with rank amateur Frank and psychotic renegade Rudy. You can tell that this dost not bode well.

Rudy goes haywire, killing everyone in sight but is soon put out of action by McCoy, who then legs it across country with his cheating wife (the lovely Ali McGraw) and a bag full of simoleons. Down, but not out, Rudy follows him, as well as several associates of the recently deceased Jack Benyon, not to mention loads of cops.

The film is basically one action scene after the other but it doesn't pretend to be anything other than tough-guy entertainment. I find it bizarre that this film is rated PG in America and the exact same version is rated 18 in the UK. But the blood effects in the film are pretty damn fake so it does take it out of reality a little bit. Plus there are no (audible) F-words and the nudity is minimum and quick.

I saw the 1994 remake first and while it's passable it's not really as rustic and straight-forward as this. It was quite a pointless film and virtually identical, shot-for-shot. Everything that The Getaway has to offer is done best in this one. Unpretenious fun indeed.

The HD DVD sports a brilliant 2.4:1 1080p transfer with Dolby Digital Plus Mono sound and loads of cool extras including an alternate music track featuring Jerry Fielding's rejected score.

I'm hopeful that Eric Schiffman (the yoga master for this Ali McGraw & friends video) will create another yoga video one of these days ... ;)

2 out of 5 stars Great movie, poor quality dvd.......2007-04-16

I love a good '70s cb radio movie as much as the next person and I really love this movie. However, this dvd is of very poor quality-it looks like it was taped off an old tv set and the sound is not synched with the picture. I couldn't watch it. It was put out by a company called Cheezy Flicks. I won't be buying anything else they put out. Let's hope some other company does a professional job of transferring this fun movie onto a dvd...how hard could it really be???

5 out of 5 stars CONVOY.......2007-03-24

MY SON IS 4 YEARS OLD I BOUGHT HIM THIS DVD BECAUSE HE INTO SEMI AND HIS DAD HAD THIS MOVIE RECORED OFF THE T.V. SO I HAD TO BY HIM THE DVD SO HE COULD HAVE IS OWN COPY AND EVERY NIGHT HE WATCHES IT THERE FOR A WHILE THE MOVIE HAD TO BE PLAYING ALL THE TIME... THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY AS FAR AS PICKING OUT A MOVIE IS TO MAKE SURE YOU OR THAT PERSON IS GOING TO LIKE IT.... I TRYED TO FIND THIS MOVIE ELS WHERE BUT NO ONE ELS CARRIED IT BUT THATS TO AMAZON I FOUND IT CAUSE THEY CARRIED IT THNAKS SO MUCH....

2 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED AGAIN,.......2007-01-01

The movie was the one I wanted, however, It was supposed to be "new" I guess "new" means different things to different people. I didnt order from "cheesey Flicks because of the reviews, I ordered from Amazon (I wont ever again, though) and it still came from "Cheesey Flicks". The picture was not "clear like it should be, it was a very poor "digital remaster" the sound track was off, it was like watching the old jaspanese monster movies, where the lips were moving, but not in sync with the soundtrack, You had to keep your finger on the volume button on the remote cause the sound went up and down...I was really disappointed, I have learned my lesson, "again" hope against hope, that I would get a fair deal when buying off the internet,.... what you see, isn't always what you get....

5 out of 5 stars Not as bad as it was made out to be.......2006-08-01

I recently purchased this DVD to replace a worn out VHS tape. After reading the other reviews about this DVD, I wondered if I should actually spend money on it. I decided to go for it and I was glad I did. I thought the sound and picture quality was excellent! I would not hesitate to buy this DVD again.

3 out of 5 stars Convoy.......2005-10-27

Movie is ok, but not like the movie on T.V. This one is cut and the one that I seen on T.V. was not cut. One scene that was cut from the dvd is where the man is talking to the truckers all down the line as to why they are in the convoy and it shows a trucker mooning the camera.

5 out of 5 stars Looks much better than the original... still.......2007-06-21

This version looks much better than the original DVD. However, it shows it is an old movie and this has much more to do with the original equipment and filming techniques than with digital format. If you are a Steve McQueen fan as I am, do not hesitate. Buy it. If you're not, stick with the old standard or special edition versions.
