Readers of John Berendt's bestselling novel were bound to be at least somewhat disappointed by this big-screen adaptation, but despite mixed reaction from critics and audiences, there's still plenty to admire about director Clint Eastwood's take on the material. Readers will surely miss the rich atmosphere and societal detail that Berendt brought to his "Savannah story," and the movie can only scratch the surface of Georgian history, tradition, and wealthy decadence underlying Berendt's fact-based murder mystery. Still, Eastwood maintains an assured focus on the wonderful eccentrics of Savannah, most notably a gay Savannah antiques dealer (superbly played by Kevin Spacey), who may or may not have killed his friend and alleged lover (Jude Law). John Cusack plays the <I>Town & Country</I> journalist who arrives in Savannah to find much more than he bargained for--including the city's legendary drag queen Lady Chablis (playing "herself")--and John Lee Hancock's smoothly adapted screenplay succeeds in bringing Berendt's characters vividly to life with plenty of flavorful dialogue. In similar fashion to Warner's acclaimed DVD of <I>L.A. Confidential</I>, this classy DVD includes a behind-the-scenes documentary titled <I>The Real People in the Garden</I> and an interactive map tour of Savannah and its most celebrated (or notorious) citizens. The original theatrical trailer is also included. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars one of the best movies of all time.......2007-05-13

The book is just as quirky as Savannah or is the Savannah as quirky as the book...an all time favorite that should be on every one's shelf...you never know when you might new it !!

5 out of 5 stars southern hospitality.......2007-03-09

The star of this movie is: John Cusack. Kevin Spacey. The Lady Chablis. Minerva, the juju woman. Savannah. Uga.

Okay, Uga can only be a supporting star; #1.,his part is small - important, but limited, and #2., he's a dog.

But everybody in this quirky, involving, dramatized true story is a star without a doubt, including a few folks you will recognize from other movie roles but not be able to put a name to. This is the sort of movie that attaches itself to followers of "Northern Exposure" and other vehicles for personal expression and individuality. The setting itself is spectacular; Savannah, Georgia, a town I could place on a map but until this didn't know much about, is suddenly at the top of my list of places to see before the end. There is undeniable Southern charm, the cliqueishness of a community dedicated to keeping outsiders in the dark, an indefinable spookiness aided by Spanish moss hanging from the trees and lush green gardens and dark corners everywhere; mystery permeates every frame of this film, augmented by a waggish I'm-Southern-and-you're-not attitude presented by almost everybody without rancor or arrogance. These are people comfortable in their own skins and they don't care if the visitor is particularly at ease or not.

John Kelso (John Cusack), a writer for Town & Country Magazine, gleans the peach assignment of covering the annual and much-desired Christmas party hosted by Savannahian Jim Williams, an entrepreneur restorer of old mansions and art works who resides in the gorgeous former home of songwriter Johnny Mercer. The house itself is a character in the movie; classy, elegant, well-appointed, it is the architectural equivalent of its human conservator, Jim Williams, who oversees every aspect of his place in Savannah society with panache. Genteel is a word that applies to all but one of the principals here, and that principal makes his raucous and vulgar debut fairly early in the Christmas party. During John Kelso's tour of this beautiful home, as he is being shown around by Jim Williams, a loud, ill-dressed young man strides threateningly into the room yelling at Jim, and we are introduced to Billy Hanson (Jude Law), who is miffed that he wasn't included in the party. It's obvious from the start that there is more to this meeting than is immediately apparent, and you can watch the wheels turning in John Kelso's mind as he attempts to work it out. After the vulgar young man stomps out, an unruffled Jim Williams explains with perfect Southern charm, "Uh, that was Billy Hanson, works part time in the shop - and can, at times, be a very colourful character."

Later on, John Kelso is awakened in his carriage-house quarters by a deal of noise and confusion, and wanders out into a surreal scandal which becomes his full induction into Savannah and all its many colours: wall-to-wall police at the Mercer home, all of Savannah milling about outside in the dark, and a dead Billy Hanson in the front room, an obviously traumatised Jim Williams giving an emotional account of Billy's demise in another room to the police detective. John Kelso is allowed to wander through the crime scene unchallenged for a few minutes until he himself realizes what he is doing and vacates.

The movie swings into overdrive now in its parade of colourful characters. John Kelso, abandoning his Christmas party coverage in favour of instead writing a book about what he sees to be a sensational story, embarks upon an examination of everyone involved. The movie is clearly stolen by the Lady Chablis, a local showgirl and friend of many of the principals, who knows a little too much about everybody and who is, moreover, played to perfection by the actual Lady Chablis (I can't imagine anyone else in this role). Others in this group of individuals includes the actual defense attorney in the subsequent trial (in the movie he plays the judge); an old juju woman who communes with the dead; a juror in the trial who wanders through Savannah with a flock of horseflies attached to his person via threads superglued to the flies; an entertaining duo who run a club (the woman singer is played extremely well by Clint Eastwood's daughter Alison); and various other small parts that make up a cohesive whole of a truly unique and charming community.

The fact that this true story was portrayed by many of the people who were actually involved is a great stroke of luck; they bring a light to the story that would fall a little flat otherwise. (The Lady Chablis is her own story, and it is impossible to look away when she is onscreen.) Kevin Spacey is unsurpassed in his portrayal (he even bears a remarkable resemblance to the real Jim Williams) and his wonderful Southern diction is worth listening to no matter what he is saying. John Cusack's wide-eyed-New-York-writer is well-played also. The only role i thought a bit stilted was Jude Law's Billy Hanson, which was jarring (perhaps on purpose) and seemed strained.

The extras section, which includes a tour of the noted locations in Savannah, is as interesting as the movie itself, and as said previously, makes me eager to visit this beautiful city.

5 out of 5 stars Very good product.......2007-02-14

The DVD is of very good quality. The jacket is in very good shape, also.

There were no scratches on the DVD and no smeared scenes, either.

I am pleased with the product.

4 out of 5 stars Lady Chablis Steals the Show.......2007-01-23

John Kelso, a New York writer (John Cusack) is commissioned by Town & Country magazine to write a 500 word article about Jim Williams, a Savannah, GA socialite antique dealer (Kevin Spacey).

A few days and a few parties later, the talented writer begins to think there is more than a short article in this little southern town. Perhaps a successful book. After Billy Hanson, the local hustler, played by a very young looking Jude Law, is murdered Kelso knows there is. As he begins to research his main character, Jim Williams, he learns the true character of his subject and the people he has called his friends. It's amazing what happens to southern hospitality when someone's sexuality is brought to the forefront of a murder trial.

This was such a great movie. Filled with colourful southern characters, lead by the fantastic Spacey. Not surprisingly Cusack's character moves the story along but my absolute favourite was the sweet Lady Chablis (Chablis Deveau) a.k.a. Frank, a lounge singer with attitude, a hidden package and a keen sense of wit. She really steals the show.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is loosely based on the successful novel of the same name by John Berendt and is directed by Clint Eastwood. It has the feel of the Usual Suspects, probably because of Spacey. Definitely worth watching. Reviewed by M. E. Wood

5 out of 5 stars Savannah, Georgia: "Gone with the Wind on Mescaline" ..........2007-01-07

It is within the exclusive historical and southern city of Savannah Georgia, that Jim Williams, a wealthy respected citizen holds his parties for the high society to which he belongs. Jim lives a privileged life and knows his friends compete to be included on his guest list. Jim chose John Kelso, a writer for Town and Country magazine to review his Christmas party, *the* spectacular social event of the season. Jim's home is a mansion dating back to the Civil War, the property and buildings take up a full city block. I love how the film reveals so much about the history, mystery and exclusiveness of Savannah society. The eccentric characters who reside in this fair southern city are gradually introduced. They have so many facets to their unsual personalities and natures that the viewer is held captive, in suspense, anxiously waiting for dark ghosts to appear or well kept secrets to be revealed. I was glued to this film from start to finish. The demarcations of various levels in society as well as the deep southern culture were reason enough to remain entranced but then add to this mix a little voo doo ceremony in a cemetery and a very lovely black female entertainer named Lady Chablis, the film becomes nonstop entertainment. The eccentricities of specific characters makes the plot, drama, and murder mystery fit together like a good puzzle.

John Kelso is nearly speechless when he discovers Mandy, a curvaceous and beautiful blonde knocking on his door during the wee hours of the morning, allegedly to borrow ice for a party next door. John is invited to a party where he learns that Mandy and her partner Joe Odom own a local jazz club. The southern lifestyle in Savannah is rich with fascinating customs. John Kelso is beginning to enjoy his assignment. At the William's Christmas party John meets even more wealthy and prestigious socialites, the upper crust of Savannah society.

The morning after the party, John is awakened by police car sirens. He learns a murder had occured at Mercer House and that Jim Williams was arrested. In his own study Jim had shot one of his hired workers, allegedly in self-defense. Jim pleads innocent to the charge of murder. As the trial begins, suspicions abound about Jim and his relationship to his employee. John Kelso believes Jim is innocent and does research to bring forth evidence to this effect. On one of his sojourns he meets "Lady Chablis" one of the most unusual characters in the film. She plays a key role in the trial. Jim's defense is sounding less convincing after the fact becomes known that there is no gunpowder residue on the hands of the victim. Sonny Jim's lawyer has his work cut out for him. The twists and turns of the plot during the trial make for a thrilling and sharply curved roller coaster of a viewing experience. One night John Kelso has a brain-storm. He visits Mandy who helps him sneak into the hospital morgue where by serendipity he discovers a clue which helps Jim's case. This crucial evidence provides the reasonable doubt necessary which will likely convince the jury to get Jim off the murder wrap.

This film is most fascinating because of how it depicts the lifestyle of Savannah, local history, the unique southern culture and the different social strata of society. The entire film is very delightful and entertaining. The characters are colorful, eccentric, and very charming ... Amazingly, the story is based on real events which happened in Savannah but with slight changes and variations made due to adapting the book into a film. In some cases the actual people play themselves and no one could imagine better characters than the real ones. This film is worth viewing more than once for the many fascinating details related to the plot, location, and cultural setting: Savannah, Georgia. Erika Borsos (pepper flower)

If you dig the whole interaction of a well oiled machine-like crew of witty, bantering guys too young to yet be jaded but playing in grownup world then this is for you. I LOVED the back and forth in the dialogue between the buddies. And they're just the backdrop material. The conversations between everyone were just gutter poetry. Chazz and Christopher are right on the money with everything about themselves that I like to see in a movie. The lead character is in control even when he's OUT of control. There is a smooth flow to this flick that makes me think of the perfect Seven and Seven. Goes down easy and you're glad you ordered it. Had a nice seedy feel to it whenever the action was in the poolhalls. This film makes you wish you could hang out with these characters for just one night.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-03-08

Has all the elements you'd expect for this type of movie and does them all really well, a good movie even if you've never picked up a pool stick

This is great movie about pool hustlers and scumbags. I liked it. I think you will like it. If you like this one, check out Double Down. There are a lot of the same characters, and actually that is the better of the two movies.

Director Clint Eastwood's 1997 box-office hit stars himself as Luther Whitney, a highly skilled thief who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, witnessing the murder of a woman involved in a secret tryst with the U.S. president (played by Gene Hackman). Determined to clear his name, Whitney cleverly eludes a tenacious detective (Ed Harris) while investigating a corruption of power reaching to the highest level of government. Adapted by veteran screenwriter William Goldman from David Baldacci's novel, this thriller balances expert suspense with well-drawn characters and an intelligent plot that's just a pounding heartbeat away from real White House headlines. Absolute Power features the great Judy Davis in a memorable supporting role as the White House chief of staff who desperately attempts to cover up the crime. --Jeff Shannon

Description

He was there he shouldn't have been and saw what he shouldn't have seen. Now, who will believe the word of a career thief and ex-con? Who will trust Luther Whitney when he says he saw a woman killed and that the man responsible for her death is the President of the United States? Clint Eastwood portrays Whitney and directs this crisp, finely acted thriller based on David Baldacci's best-selling novel. A stellar cast which includes Gene Hackman and Ed Harris creates well-rounded characters that intensify constantly spiraling game of cat and mouse between Whitney, local police and the highest levels of White House power. Eastwood is a master at steadily raising the stakes in thrillers. Here his mastery is absolute.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A fine, intelligent thriller, with thanks to Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Judy Davis, among others.......2007-06-11

So the president of the United States may not be the nicest guy in the world. Well, we've known that can be the case since 1789. So the idea of our presidents engaging in sexual shenanigans may be as uncomfortable as realizing our parents do it. Well, we've learned more than we want to know over the last few decades about how our presidents spend their time when they aren't bringing peace to the world and ensuring our domestic tranquility. One of the reasons Absolute Power is such a fine thriller is that it involves the dirty doings -- murder, cover-ups, self-serving righteousness -- of those in high elected office.

Absolute Power is the story of Luther Whitney (Clint Eastwood), "one of the great thieves of the world," who breaks into the mansion of Walter Sullivan (E. G. Marshall), a very rich, very powerful and very old political kingmaker. But then Luther hears voices and has to hide in a bedroom vault with a one-way mirror. He has to watch the rough sex between the rich man's much younger wife and a friend of hers. When things get out of hand and she angrily starts to do some stabbing, suddenly two very competent men break in and shoot the lady dead. They're followed by an aggressively competent woman who proceeds to clean things up and spin a story that a thief must have killed the lady of the house. Luther comes to realize that the two shooters are Secret Service agents, the competent woman is Gloria Russell (Judy Davis), the president's chief of staff, and the man is Allen Richmond (Gene Hackman), the unscrupulous president of the U. S. Luther is spotted and barely escapes but Russell and the two agents manage to identify him. They also learn he has an estranged daughter, Kate Whitney (Laura Linney), a young prosecutor. At first Luther decides to take his accrued wealth and flee the country. Then he sees a press conference on television where Richmond uses the grief-stricken Sullivan, who made him president, in a smarmy soap opera of shared grief. Luther changes his mind and decides to see that justice is done. Luther's brand of justice is resourceful, clever and dangerous. All the while he has to deal with an honest homicide cop, Seth Frank (Ed Harris), who is on his trail, an assassin hired by Sullivan to kill whoever killed his wife, and the machinations of Gloria Russell, determined to shield Richmond, aided by the two Secret Service agents. One, Bill Burton (Scott Glenn), has a conscience. The other, Tim Collin (Dennis Haysbert), does not.

Eastwood and writer William Goldman have, in my opinion, concocted a fine, intelligent thriller that plays off Eastman's age ("Go down a rope in the middle of the night? If I could do that, I'd be the star of my AARP meetings."), gives us some fine set pieces (the break-in, killing and cleaning up; the attempt on Luther's life by two separate assassins when he meets his daughter; and the wonderfully played dance at a White House ball between Hackman and Davis) and which is told at a more-or-less human-sized scale. While I think perhaps too much time was spent on the relationship between Luther and his daughter, it's this relationship, well acted between Eastman and Linney, that helps raise the movie beyond just another thriller.

Three things make this movie so good. First, there are two sets of intriguing relationships, one of which is poignant and tender, the other almost grotesquely amusing. The Eastwood-Linney situation is the first. And then there is the Allen Richmond-Gloria Russell pas de dieux. He depends on her but we know he'd toss her out in a minute if he needed to. She depends on him, probably loves him, and would gut her mother to protect him and her power ("I'll take care of everything. Like I always do."). It's fascinating, especially as played out by Hackman and Davis. Their White House waltz at the ball, where Davis is coy because she thinks the necklace she received was a present from Richmond, and Richmond knows, and tells her, that the necklace was the one worn by Sullivan's wife and that it had to have come from Luther Whitney, is a classic lesson in acting. The two of them play every emotion you can think of, all the while dancing in close-up and smiling for the admiring guests. The scene is a tour de force and immensely funny.

Second, this movie is so good for what Eastwood and Goldman don't do. This is a thriller without explosions, without wild car chases and without star posing. We're left to focus on the story, on the intelligence of the dialogue, on the cleverness of the situation. As Roger Ebert said, "it's a thriller not upstaged by its thrills."

Third, and most importantly, is the casting. The impact of the movie primarily rests with Eastwood, Hackman and Davis. Each one has shown many times that they can carry a movie by themselves. Judy Davis is the least known and has been stuck in character roles for years. However, just watch her in My Brilliant Career, A Passage to India or Children of the Revolution to see an actress who can dominate a movie. The second tier, made up of Ed Harris, E. G. Marshall, Laura Linney, Scott Glenn and Dennis Haysbert are just as effective. These are experienced actors who work well together and who know how to deliver their stuff. E. G. Marshall at 83 gives a performance that combines great sadness with an implacable sense of retribution. And Scott Glenn, such a good actor who has slowly slipped down to smaller, secondary roles, gives a performance of such regret it nearly distracts us from the story.

The movie is in real need of a better release. The picture is consistently too soft and frequently too dark in the night-time and interior scenes. There are a couple of inconsequential extras.

4 out of 5 stars Absolute Power.......2007-05-07

Clint Eastwood and a very good story plus a great cast makes for a keeper for collectors.

2 out of 5 stars READ THE BOOK, FORGET THE FILM........2006-12-11

If you want a standard Clint Eastwood thriller with a top notch crew then this is your standard fare. It's all fairly nice and staid and rather slushy at the end but if you want a version of the book DON'T BOTHER it is a virtual rewrite, leaving out the main character Jack, his daughter's ex-boyfriend completely. The basis of the book was built around him defending Luther and finding out the truth. In the book the daughter hates Luther, in this she just vaguely dislikes him. Don't want to give to much away but Luther isn't even in the end of the book and the way he manipulates the authorities is non-exsistant. See what i mean? they should of said 'based on the book...but only a little'.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting suspense thriller!.......2006-03-27

This is an interesting film with Clint playing a cat burglar who likes to paint as a hobby. He is estranged from his daughter due to his criminal actiity but longs to be involved in her life.

Clint plays this part with dignity and grace. The story is well written and interestingly filmed. It was nice to see Gene Hackman as part of the supporting cast.

5 out of 5 stars A solid thriller with a message.......2005-10-24

Absolute Power is not among Clint Eastwood greatest films, but it's much better than is usually given credit for. A dark thriller, directed as professionally and bleakly as only Eastwood can do it, Absolute Power centers around Luther Whitney, a professional burglar (Eastwood himself, in one of his best performances in the last decade), who finds himself in a classic wrong place, wrong time situation - while robbing a luxurious mansion, he accidentally witnesses a sexual assault and a murder, and the subsequent cover-up, that involves the President of the United States and the White House staff. That scene at the very beginning of the movie is probably the strongest one in it, Eastwood making brilliant use of cinematography, music (and especially the lack of) and his trademark heavy contrasted lighting, and with almost no dialogue at all, it's a remarkably effective scene that overshadows much of the rest of the film.

Still, as the film turns into a more standard conspiracy-thriller, it holds its own quite well, mainly due to William Goldman's wonderful script (as his always are, this is the genius who wrote 'The Princess Bride', 'Marathon Man', 'Misery' and 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid', among others) and most of all thanks to the absolutely fantastic all-star cast; other than Clint himself, who is ideal as the charming, ruthless but honest criminal, fantastic performances are also given by Gene Hackman as the President and by Ed Harris as the detective on the case. The rest of the excellent cast includes Laura Linney ('Primal Fear') as Luther's daughter; the fantastic Judy Davis ('Naked Lunch', 'Barton Fink') as the President's sneaky assistant; Scott Glenn ('Buffalo Soldiers'); Dennis Haysbert ('Far From Heaven'); E.G. Marshall ('Tora! Tora! Tora!'); Penny Johnson ('24'); and Richard Jenkins ('Six Feet Under'). As is usually the case with Clint Eastwood's films, all the actors seem to have been hand-picked by him directly, rather than participated in an audition, because each character seems to have been designed specifically for the actor portraying them. Because of that cast and the brilliant directing and dialogue, Absolute Power is an entirely gripping watch, even if the story is at times less than entirely convincing and just a little fragmented.

Absolute Power tries to make its mark on three levels - the thriller level is the only one where it completely succeeds, and it manages to be constantly exciting, gripping and enticing. It works slightly less well on the human level, because the inter-character relationships are rather poorly developed. Laura Linney's character in particular is underdeveloped, and so the father-daughter relationship element hardly carries any weight in the story, and neither does her relationship with Ed Harris's character. As there is no interaction between Eastwood's character and Hackman's, the only relationships that are worth mentioning are the ones between Eastwood and Harris, which is strictly superficial and based on mutual respect, and the one between Hackman and Marshall, who plays the old billionaire who funded Hackman's rise to the presidency. The third level on which the film works is as political commentary; there it achieves partial success, as the story often seems contrived (although, one might note, not as contrived as we may imagine). Still, it can give you a general idea of how absolute power corrupts, and of the kind of horrors that the intricate systems of democracy might hide; but it's not to be taken too literally. The strongest elements of the story are the mystery, and Clint Eastwood's character, clearly the strongest in the film; as such it's a solid and enticing thriller with lots of atmosphere and wonderful acting, that will keep you glued to your seat.

Yes, if you're looking for a feel-good movie, you should definitely get this one. Darrah Cloud knows how to put together a story with bang-up endings, and this movie with its two story threads has two great endings, back-to-back.

But there is some bad news. Naomi Judd (unless of course you're a fan of hers) is not much of an actress here. Her scenes look more like a personal appearance, with lines.

The daughter is cute and believable. The uncle is also credible.

The love story is totally botched. The pacing is disjointed. And there is a lack of motivation. It is simply not credible, so don't expect to be touched by it.

Andy is Andy, and he adds a touch a quality that makes the others look more amateurish than they otherwise would.

The rock music (and the absence of Christmas music) was a bit grating. It was sad that the school kids couldn't relate to any Christmas carols. They had to have rock. The raw, harsh tone of the girl singing what were supposed to be Christmas songs was a dischordant note for me. Others might not be bothered.

Still, I say don't miss it. There aren't that many that you can afford to pass it up. Darrah Cloud's "A Holiday for Love" is a much better movie, so if you're only getting one, get that one instead.

4 out of 5 stars AKA - A Song for the Season .......2007-01-26

I really liked this Christmas movie, but I don't understand why the identical movie has two different names. The new principal (hatchet-man) has come to Bethlehem to revamp the high school and falls for the music teacher who is helping his niece.

5 out of 5 stars A Holiday Romance.......2007-01-18

These days it's hard to find a good, family movie that tells a great story without being too sentimental at the same time. I really enjoyed the way Naomi Judd brought out the best in Gerald McRaney and his niece. This was a heart-warming movie of many triumphs.

Pulling off the rare feat of winning Emmys for portraying the same role, Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard raise this widely watched TV movie above the usual weepy-biopic standard. Since the project is based on a memoir by Lorna Luft, Judy Garland's "other" daughter, the emphasis is on Garland's rocky post-MGM years, spotlighting marriages, pills, and spectacular stage comebacks. Davis handles the neurotic swoops with authority; when Garland sighs on her birthday, "I'm 47 today--with my life, that makes me 412," you believe her. One thing she can't capture is Garland's onscreen incandescence: Davis's lip-syncing of "The Trolley Song" is expert but joyless. The luminous young Blanchard (who won the supporting actress trophy) has a physical and vocal resemblance to the former Frances Gumm that's often breathtaking, and the <I>Wizard of Oz</I> sequences look like outtakes from the real thing. Too much TV-flick telescoping dooms the movie to sketchiness, but those performances are over the rainbow. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Description

The remarkable story of Hollywood legend Judy Garland is vividly told in this widely acclaimed film, which features amazing, Emmy Award-winning portrayals by Judy Davis (Best Actress) and Tammy Blanchard (Best Supporting Actress). Loved by millions the world over, Judy was the brightest star in Hollywood's Golden Era. Away from the bright lights and brilliant performances, however, her devotion was to her family. But while she loved her children unconditionally, they could only desperately try and hang on to their mother as a powerful dependence on alcohol and prescription drugs began to consume her life. Based on the book by Garland's daughter Lorna Luft, and honored recipient of 5 Emmy Awards, LIFE WITH JUDY GARLAND: ME AND MY SHADOWS is a deeply moving testament to the healing powers of embracing one's past, facing one's demons, and charting a course of self-discovery!

4 out of 5 stars Several Cut Scenes on the DVD version!!.......2007-05-23

This is a 5-star television movie and the performances are incredible as I'm sure you've read. However, on the DVD version, they cut out several scenes so I reccommend keeping your VHS copies. One scene is right before Judy performs The Trolley Song in Meet Me in St. Louis, her and Vicente are having an argument in her dressing room right before. Another scene is when she finds out her current boyfriend is having an affair with another man. He walks out of the room half-naked as Lorna and the housekeeper rush to help her take care of the bloody gash on her head. Another scene is when she is about to go on stage for a concert in Australia, and she is too disoriented to perform thus getting booed off the stage. There may be a couple more scenes but these ones I know of for sure. I wish studios would not release DVD's unless they do it right the first time!

Excellent performance by Judy Davis! A must see for Judy fans!

5 out of 5 stars Judy Davis is BRILLIANT in her portrayal of Judy Garland!.......2006-08-11

Judy Davis' portrayal of Judy Garland In "Life with Judy Garland - Me and My Shadows" was nothing short of amazing. I have read the book upon which this movie is based and found it very difficult to put down. It is well written, straight from the heart and told from a view point which couldn't have been done any better than by Lorna Luft herself. Judy Davis does Judy Garland's memory nothing but honor in her portrayal of this vocal legend. The book and movie allows us to learn who Francis Ethel Gumm (aka Judy Garland) really was from the time she took her first steps on a stage at 2 years old, through her rise and demise as one of MGM's brightest stars through her uncomparable performance at Carnegie Hall to her untimely death. One may learn the pros and cons of life in show business while also seeing how crucial parental guidance and welfare for a child in this industry is. We are reminded of the great joy and entertainment Judy Garland brought to many lives and despite it all her determination to endure and go on even in the face of much physical and mental adversity. We're also reminded of the tremendous talent Judy Garland had and how she continues to inspire and be a role model and idol to many people today.

Life with Judy Garland- Me and My Shadows is such an awesome film. I am a huge Judy Garland fan! The film was very well put together. The acting was incredible! Judy Davis really brought Garland to life. The story was also very well written. I highly recommend this film!

4 out of 5 stars Judy Does Judy.......2006-07-30

In a review (basically favorable) I posted recently of the film HILARY AND JACKIE, I made the observation that film-bio's are, by definitiion, problematic. Every bit of cinematic license one takes with the story is going to be picked up by SOMEONE somewhere who will be quick to denounce said film as little more than a pack of lies. Or at least, if they're feeling generous, a jumble of truths and fictions.

Perusing some of the reviews below, I see that more avid fans of Judy Garland than I take exception to some of this film's representation's about the life and times of this hugely talented performer. Overall, however, it seems to be a more accurate film biography than many others I've seen (including the above cited HILARY & JACKIE). Like many casual fans, I am aware of the outlines of Ms. Garland's life and career, and the film, and by and large, the film adheres to those outlines.

Contributor Gary Taylor cites the scene where Judy's body is discovered by her last husband Mickey Deans as an example of the kind of innacuracies and distortions he finds disturbing. In reality, he reminds us, Deans didn't just walk into the bathroom to find Judy dead on the floor; he actually had to crawl out on the roof and through the window.

That's an interesting tid-bit and I thank Gary for it, since I certainly was not aware of that fact. And you know, it's just dramatic a true life event to make you wonder why the filmmakers did NOT incorporate it into the film. Wouldn't that have made a real corker of a scene? Well, maybe, but here's my take on it. Britisher Mickey Deans was married to Judy Garland only for a matter of weeks. Her family back in the States had never even met the man. The filmmakers (correctly, I think) did not attempt to flesh out Mr. Deans as a character or as a presence in Ms. Garland's life. Giving him a big dramatic moment when his character has never been established would likely have seemed a bit odd, dramatically speaking.

(It probably does not need to be reiterated once again that this film is based on a memoir by daughter-from-Judy's-second-marriage Lorna Luft, who does serve as narrator in the everpresent voiceover. For that reason alone the lack of emphasis on Judy's later marriages makes sound narrative sense. There also seems to be little reason to believe that neither her last marriage to Deans or the previous short lived liaison with Mark Herron were anywhere near as significant to Garland herself as either her first marriage to Vincente Minelli or her second to Sid Luft).

So I personally have little argument with the minor liberties this film takes with the facts of Judy Garland's life. And like many others who have posted reviews of the film, I have nothing but kudos for both actresses who portrayed Garland at different stages of her life and career. Judy Davis is just riveting as the older Judy. And Tammy Blanchard is a wonder as the adolescent star. Both certainly deserved the Emmys they won for their work on this film. Probably the only argument one could make regarding thecasting would be whether or not Blanchard should have been aged "up" a little to play Garland in her 20s rather than having Davis age "down" to take on those scenes. But then, 50-50 screen time for both actresses would likely have meant that neither of them would have walked away with an Emmy in either the "lead" or "supporting" categories.

The screenwriter of Escape from Alcatraz, Richard Tuggle, sold a second script to Clint Eastwood on the condition that he be allowed to direct it. The result is a near classic, a grim psycho-thriller set in New Orleans, which remains one of the star's boldest attempts to undercut his unshakable rock-bound image. It was interpreted by some critics as an exercise in self-exploration, although that might be stretching it. Still, as a cop whose own kinky yearnings are pulled to the surface as he investigates a series of stalker murders of women, Eastwood often seems tormented by self-doubt, and that was a new flavor for him. The French-Canadian actress Geneviève Bujold plays the seductive Cajun shrink who helps Clint get in touch with his dark side. The great thing is that the movie works as pure suspense, despite its larger ambitions. Tuggle made sure that the crime-solving elements and the psychological explorations fit smoothly together: the twist is that in order to be able to anticipate the sicko's actions, the cop has to learn to share his feelings, and finds the transition a little too easy to negotiate. --David Chute

5 out of 5 stars "There's a darkness inside all of us. You, me, and the man down the street. Some have it under control. Others act it out.".......2007-04-22

I recently "discovered" the genius of Clint Eastwood ... and I have a lot of catching up to do. After seeing this film, I have a deeper appreciation for this performer's tremendous range.

Of the film itself, it is phenomenally gripping and complex. I was stunned at the "grey area" this work explores. Contemporary mainstream film often writes "black and white" characters: this character is "good," that one "bad." So tedious is this trend, that many critical viewers have abandoned "Hollywood" films entirely. Nonetheless, "Tightrope" illustrates that Hollywood once created deep, rich characters. Tuggle's work toys with a seeming contradiction: that Eastwood's character is a loving single-father to two young, sensitive girls AND that he has shockingly misogynistic impulses. The audience views Eastwood's character, Captain Block, indulge his sexual aggression with prostitutes (which is perhaps a result of his bitter divorce or perhaps a genuine aspect of his personality) and then return home to gently tuck his children into bed. This is jarring! Moreover, that Captain Block's love-interest is a powerful, rape-defense instructor only complicates his very human character. Eastwood enacts this multi-faceted role with absolute precision.

The casting is remarkable!! That Tuggle cast an "average" (read: unconventionally attractive) actress to play Eastwood's love-interest is ingenious. Geneviève Bujold plays the aforementioned defense-expert. As Beryl Thibodeaux, Bujold is the perfect counterpart to Eastwood. While intrigued by Captain Block, Thibodeaux quickly detects his misogynist tendencies and indicates that she will not be another conquest, but an equal. For instance, while on their first lunch date, Block tells Thibodeaux, "[I wonder] what it would be like to lick the sweat off your body." Her reaction is perfect: she is not angry, she is not aroused, she merely states that he could attempt a bit more subtlety ... that he could express a sentiment to her that he does not express to every woman he meets. It is both clever and progressive.

When watching this film, I wonder where these complicated works are today. I think Hollywood should take a lesson from Tuggle's work and show its audience characters who are both good parents and professionals with deep "flaws" (and the manner in which Block comes to terms with his sadistic side is quite compelling ... but no spoilers here!!) Block's humanity is excellently portrayed ... and I am continuing my exploration of Eastwood films hoping to find more of this!

Watch this film if you are interested in 1980's Hollywood, Eastwood's films, crime dramas, or the use of "strong women" in male-dominated films.

5 out of 5 stars Exploration of Dark Desires.......2006-12-29

Perverse, voyeuristic and nightmarish are not words commonly associated with Clint Eastwood's oeuvre, but in 1984 Richard Tuggle on the strength of his story was given the opportunity by Eastwood to direct his first film. The result is a seedy stroll through the backstreets and whorehouses of New Orleans. The success of the film relies on Eastwood's willingness to manipulate and subvert his iconic screen image. Since the warm comic capers of "Every Which Way But Loose" Eastwood had shown a propensity to experiment with his characters. This reaches something of an apex in the trouble and haunted homicide detective Wes Block. Block finds himself empathising a little too much with the serial killer who is plaguing the warm New Orleans nights. Adding to Block's complexity is a turbulent family life in which he is the single parent of two young children and a blossoming romance. The film really gets to grips with psychology of the serial killer as Block attempts to get inside his mind, the revelation that Block finds himself enjoying certain perverse delights creates a wonderful tension in the film that implicates Block as a possible suspect. Another major success of the film is the location, New Orleans beats not with life, but with death as the Mardi Gras takes a back seat and Tuggle explores the dark and seamy nightlife of this soulful and mysterious town. Ultimately this film is the real Dirty Harry, with the emphasis on Dirty. "Tightrope" is to the Eastwood detective image/film what "Unforgiven" was to his western image, a deconstruction of myths and iconic status. It deserves re-appraisal.

THI ITEM IS A GOOD MOVIE , BUT THERE ARE SOME MINOR FLAWS IN THE DISC , OTHER WISE I AM SATISFIED WITH THIS ITEM

4 out of 5 stars One Of Eastwood's Darker Films.....And A Good One!.......2006-04-23

Here is a very, very tense thriller about a New Orleans cop (Clint Eastwood) finding a serial killer.....and vice-versa.

This is a very dark (literally) film with a big film-noir look and feel. Neo-noir, I guess, is what they call post-1950 gritty crime films like these.

Eastwood's character in "Tightrope" is a complex one. On one hand, he's a wonderfully loving father of two sweet girls (one played by his actual daughter, and played well), and yet he is a weak man when it comes to prostitutes. But, whatever side he shows - light or dark - he's interesting, as always. So is the female star of this movie, Genevieve Bujold, a woman with a very intriguing face and just a trace of her French accent. Dan Heyada contributes strongly in a low- key performance.

Yes, this film is a bit too much on the seedy side for my normal tastes, definitely sordid, but very well done. It's a story that grabs you early and locks you in all the way.

5 out of 5 stars Explore the fascination with the dark side of the hero!.......2006-03-27

Clint portrays the dark side of a homicide cop who is investigating a series of murders in New Orleans. While Clint is a single father and has a menagerie of dogs at home, he also has kinky sex with prostitutes. The killer he is targeting becomes aware of Clint's proclivities and uses this to taunt Clint. An interesting tale of the tension of opposites and the need to reconcile them.

Director Alan Rudolph's adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's novel <I>Breakfast of Champions</I> centers on suicidal car dealer Dwayne Hoover (Bruce Willis), his drug- and television-addled wife Celia (Barbara Hershey), his cross-dressing sales manager Harry (Nick Nolte), his dim secretary and mistress Francine (Glenne Headly), and Vonnegut's alter ego of sorts, pulp writer Kilgore Trout (Albert Finney). Dwayne is desperate for meaning in his life and starts to believe that Trout, who has been invited to the town's impending arts festival, will be able to tell him some truth he's never heard before. The EPA is investigating toxic sludge under property Dwayne owns, Celia is losing her already fragile grip on reality, Harry is growing increasingly paranoid that Dwayne knows about his private habits, and Francine is impatient with Dwayne's increasingly erratic behavior. Meanwhile, Kilgore Trout grouses about his failures and finally decides to attend the arts festival as a final act of self-humiliation. On top of all this, there are four or five other characters, all eccentric to the point of overload. It's difficult to get a fix on what the movie wants to be about, but Glenne Headly makes her character an island of sympathy in the ocean of everyone else's self-absorption, and Albert Finney creates some poignant moments as Trout is confronted by people who either scorn or worship his stories without any attempt to understand them. Featuring a cameo by Vonnegut. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

4 out of 5 stars It is what it is.......2007-04-17

I totally agree with those of you who are upset over the fact that this is not a "true" adaptation of Vonnegut's novel.
When I first watched this movie I was expecting something a little truer to the original story, but once it started I realized that was not in the cards. So, I decided to turn my brain off and take this movie for what it is, entertainment. I have gone back and watched it since then, and still find it an enjoyable bit of fluff.
I thought Willis did a wonderful job portraying a man who is losing his mind. Albert Finney was a very admirable Kilgore Trout, and Nick Nolte stole the show with his portrayal of Henry Le Sabre.
I have read all of Vonnegut's wonderful novels, and am very pleased whenever someone decides to adapt one into film. Many fans may not be pleased with this particular piece, and in response to that I would refer them to Slaughterhouse-Five, and Mother Night. As for this flick goes, watch it for the drawings.

3 out of 5 stars Why all the hate?.......2007-03-17

I've read the book and seen the movie. Don't really understand all the hate for this movie. Is it as good as the book? It certainly is not but it's good for what it is and that's an oddball movie. If you enjoy weirder slices of cinema then i think you could very well enjoy this movie. If you are a Vonnegut nut looking for the best book to movie adaptation ever made then be sure to look elsewhere.....

5 out of 5 stars Don't Even Trip.......2006-05-20

This is a great adaptation. Just finished reading this book, and I watched the movie before hand. To all those out there: STOP SEEING MOVIES AND EXPECTING EXACT TRANSLATIONS. If you want to read a book and see a movie, remember this tagline: The screenwriter of this movie was a screenwriting machine not a book writing machine. The book writing machine did a great job that some other reading machines hate, while the screenwriting machine did its job great, and so on. Listen: The essence was there the whole time, and yes it touched me deeply, however of course it did because I'm the only one with free will from the Creator. Okay, get it? Calm down, stop gritting your teeth while watching this movie and go watch Garbage Pail Kids and see what could happen with a movie in the worst case scenario. Ghastly!!!

2 out of 5 stars Painful to Watch.......2005-09-05

I like Vonnegut enough to have a desire to see this movie, after all the book was pretty good and one of my favorites by Vonnegut. This movie flat out stinks. Vonnegut's books just don't translate over to the Big Screen very well and this movie is no exception. I suggest you read the book, but pass on the movie - in fact avoid it all cost.

1 out of 5 stars Junk, the whole movie should've ended up on the cutting room floor.......2005-07-15

I didn't read the book; I purchased it based on the actors, that was a huge mistake. Had I paid attention to the people who rated this with one star I could have spared myself the anguish of watching it. I have 24 movies with Bruce Willis in them and its goes without saying I now have 23 this went in the trash. I wouldn't think of even giving it away for fear someone found out I actually paid money for this garbage. I have a collection pushing 1800 DVDs and this is the first time I have had to write a negative review.
