If you don't mind a heavy dose of schmaltz and sentiment, this romantic comedy has a gentle way of seducing you with its charms. While You Were Sleeping was the first starring role for Sandra Bullock after her blockbuster success in Speed. In a role that nicely emphasizes her easygoing appeal, Bullock is the reason the movie works at all. She plays Lucy Eleanor Moderatz, a Chicago Transit tollbooth clerk who's hopelessly smitten with a daily commuter, Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher). She saves the object of her affection from certain death after he's mugged and falls onto the train tracks. While Peter is in a coma, she lets his family believe that she is his fiancée, and surprisingly finds herself drawn to his brother (Bill Pullman), for whom the attraction is definitely mutual. How Lucy gets out of this amorous predicament is what makes this pleasant movie less predictable than its familiar ingredients would initially indicate. It's feel-good fluff, with characters and performances that keep you smiling through the drippy plot mechanics. --Jeff Shannon

Description

You'll fall in love with WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, the hit romantic comedy that woke everyone up to adorable Sandra Bullock (SPEED, A TIME TO KILL). As Lucy, a lonely subway worker, she becomes smitten with a handsome stranger (Peter Gallagher -- MALICE). But when she saves his life after he's been mugged and fallen into a coma, his hilariously offbeat family mistakes her for his fiancee! Soon, the mix-ups escalate as Lucy fabricates a life between herself and a man she's never met! And when Lucy falls for his charming brother (Bill Pullman -- INDEPENDENCE DAY) the situation really gets uproarious as she's forced to make a choice between the two!

5 out of 5 stars Sandra and Bill..........2007-06-16

...what a great pair and what a fabulous movie. This is one of my faves of all time. It's funny, fun, and touches your heart. I am a huge Sandra Bullock fan since first seeing her in Speed and this made me a Bill Pullman fan as well. Previous to this movie he was always the guy who lost the girl, so seeing him as the male lead was a pleasant surprise.
Great movie...get it!!

5 out of 5 stars sweet romantic comedy.......2007-05-25

This is one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time. Sandra Bullock is perfect in her role, and she has great chemistry with Bill Pullman. All the supporting cast is fabulous, from Peter Gallagher (perfect in his role as the superficial one of the two brothers) to the late always-hilarious Peter Boyle and reliable Jack Warden. Strong casting, an original storyline, great script, and perfect execution make for a highly enjoyable romantic comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy, Love Story and overall Family Fun........2007-05-13

This movie shows that you are NOT crazy & you are not alone. Everyone has felt as if they don't fit in and "is it always going to be like this?" This film has several Titles. CLassic Family Fun & Comedy for anytime.

4 out of 5 stars Light and fun.......2007-03-10

This is one of my "watch again and again" movies. It always lifts my mood.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Romantic Comedy.......2007-03-08

I really liked the movie--in fact--I liked it so much that I saw it numerous times. It is one of those treasures that you want to keep in your collection to watch whenever you want. I liked the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman in the movie. This movie is one of my favorites to see her in. It was funny and light. "While You Were Sleeping" was really enjoyable. It was not just Sandra who made this movie good and funny, it was the hillarious cast that kicked that humor up a bit more.

A romantic comedy set against the background of the Seattle grunge scene of the late '80s and early '90s, <I>Singles</I> contains music and/or cameo appearances by the music groups who defined the movement, including Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone, and others. (For a definitive documentary treatment of the same pop-music phenomenon, see <I>Hype!</I>) The plot is really a series of interconnected stories about various Seattle singles--some of who are part of a couple, at least temporarily. Matt Dillon plays a longhaired rocker whose girlfriend (Bridget Fonda) is considering breast enlargement surgery. As Steve and Linda, Campbell Scott and Kyra Sedgwick are going through the awkward stages of a relationship--that point when quirky little traits that may have seemed attractive initially can evolve into major annoyances. It's a funny, sweet, enjoyable picture that captures some of the flavor of the Northwest, where writer-director Cameron Crowe relocated after marrying Seattle native Nancy Wilson of Heart. (The Wilson sisters also appear on the soundtrack as members of <I>The Lovemongers</I>.) Ten years before the release of <I>Singles</I> in 1992, Crowe was the "boy wonder" reporter for <I>Rolling Stone</I> magazine who went back to high school in order to research and write what became <I>Fast Times at Ridgemont High</I>. His other work includes <I>Jerry Maguire</I> (1996) and <I>Say Anything</I> (1989). <I>--Jim Emerson</I>

3 out of 5 stars Okay, Who Stole My Life?.......2006-10-31

This movie was made in 1992. I was 27 years old. Three years away from being thirty and I still didn't have a clue about dating. All I know is that I hated it. Watching this movie really made me laugh, but walking out of the theatre I felt like I deserved a cut of the proceeds from this film, because my life was up there on the screen.

Sad, awkward...but surprisingly very funny.

Because this movie was at the height of the "Grunge Scene" which, coincidentally enough, lasted about as long as this movie, it does tend to date the film. I can just hear my little grandkids, "You wore a lumberjack shirt, a wooly cap, baggy jean shorts, and construction boots, Grampa? Didn't you live in California? Weren't you hot with all those clothes?"

"Yeah, I was hot...but damnit, I was cool..."

Yeah, I once was cool. I can never ever return to the land of cool. Oh, I can be stylish. I might also have the possibility of being hip, but I can never be cool again which really doesn't bother me because all uncool people say that to make themselves appear cool.

But back to the movie, it is a pretty accurate account of the dating life in the 90s. Maybe this should be considered more of a documentary than entertainment. I don't know what dating is like now. Thank God, I got married. It's a good thing I never dated my wife.

She's gonna kill me for saying that.
Oh, well...live dangerously. That's what all uncool people say to sound cool.

It is a good film and it does have a great soundtrack and sometimes I dust off the construction boots and put on my wooly cap and I hit the mall.

Yep, I live life on the edge. I'm a 41 year old trying to get his foot back in the door.

Peace and Blessings, everyone...

=)

5 out of 5 stars Singles well worth multiple viewings!.......2006-02-23

Singles came out in the early 90's, a time that to me, was all about the grunge scene. I was in high school then so this was the norm for us all. But as I got older, I never outgrew Singles. In fact, I think I began to relate to it even more as I gained more life experience. Anyway, here is a wonderful comedy that offers us all a glimmer of hope in this overpopulated world. We meet a group of friends who are various tennants in the same apartment building in Seattle. Singles centers around Cliff (Dillon) a struggling musician, his girlfriend Janet (Fonda) who has put Cliff's needs before her own for the last time, Linda (Sedgwick) who thinks she's found "the one" until she discovers him in a bar with another girl when he told her he was going back to Spain, Steve (Scott) who spent his dating career playing the field, and Debbie (Kelley) who searches for Mr. Right via video dating service (oh-so hilarious). The main story is about Linda & Steve meeting and the relationship that blossoms from it. If you were a big fan of grunge when it was popular you'll fall in love with Singles (with bands like Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, and even Alice in Chains featured). Many funny moments abound (this shouldn't spoil anything for you should you be the 1 person left in Wyoming or something who hasn't seen this movie) including a run-in with a pessimistic mime (played by Eric Stoltz), Debbie's dating video and Steve's story about learning about sex as a child, but that's about all I can say without giving it all away. And for a price this low, Singles is a steal as it is something you will watch again and again and again.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best movies ever made........2006-01-23

Singles... This movie touches on almost everything that could happen in a relationship. The characters are great, the senarios are real. It's a great movie. this is one to watch alone, or with someone else. or with a group of people. I love it.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2005-12-29

"Singles" is written & directed by Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, and Vanilla Sky) and features an all-star cast including Matt Dillon,
Bridget Fonda, Kyra Sedgwick, and Bill Pullman. The film also features Chris Cornell (formerly of Soundgarden, currently of Audioslave) and the members of Pearl Jam (Eddie Vedder & Co.). The film follows several stories; One is about Cliff (Dillon) the lead singer of Seattle band Citizen Dick. Cliff is under the impression that he's a rock god (the members of Pearl Jam are his band with Eddie Vedder on drums) and is worshipped by his neighbor Janet (Fonda). Meanwhile we follow the story of Linda (Sedgwick) who has had enough of guys and decides to stay single until she meets Steve (Campbell Scott). It's an awesome movie for anyone who dug the Seattle grunge scence; The soundtrack rocks, featuring songs by Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, The Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains,
The Lovemongers, etc. The movie is well acted, Fonda is hot; Dillon is very cool and funny. The movie is well written and very entertaining. A few parts of the film fall short; but other than that. Don't pass it up. B+

4 out of 5 stars Ah, to be twentysomething in Seattle in the early 1990s!.......2004-12-05

This film genuinely surprised me when I first saw it in theaters in 1992. For me, Bridget Fonda was the main draw at the time, as she received top billing and was on the movie posters with Matt Dillion. It felt like a bait and switch, because the film focuses more on Campbell Scott and Kyra Sedgwick's relationship, even though they aren't featured on the poster. That's no biggie, because I enjoyed their storyline much more than Bridget and Matt's...but I bet Campbell and Kyra weren't happy to be excluded on the poster/DVD cover.

This film has it all...great music suitable to the period (grunge/alternative), fantastic use of place (Seattle in a starring role), interesting and quirky characters, and true to life portrayal of young people in their twenties negotiating through life as they find their true passions. I especially loved Campbell Scott's performance and he is the true star of this film. His job is working on creating a "Super Train" to get Seattlites out of their cars and onboard for their commute, because he believes that "if you give them great coffee and great music, they'll ride." His girlfriend, played by Kyra Sedgwick, has her pulse on the masses, by telling him, "I still love my car, though." She's an environmentalist who drives an old gass guzzling clunker of an automobile, which Campbell pokes fun at after a lunch date. Its a joy to watch their relationship grow from initial doubts to lover games about how soon after a date one should call to other challenges that crop up. I especially love the scene when Linda (Sedgwick) peruses Steve's (Campbell Scott) record albums and gets nostalgic about her college days. That scene epitomizes the exciting "getting to know you" stage of dating and rings absolutely true. The choice of music in that scene, and throughout the entire movie really enhances the scenes overall.

Probably the only thing I didn't like about the film, which is just a tiny critique, was Janet's (Fonda) almost groupie-like infatuation with Cliff (Dillon), who didn't seem all that interested in her (until she moves on with her life). They are a mismatched pair if there ever was one...Janet with her ambitions for Grad School to pursue architecture, and Cliff the stereotypical Gen X slacker working menial jobs to support his rock band career that probably wouldn't have gone anywhere. Janet should have hooked up with the plastic surgeon who doesn't know how to have fun!

This dvd would be made even better with a director's commentary track. Cameron Crowe could divulge a lot of interesting information and insite jokes that the average filmwatcher might not catch (like when the mime says, "wooo woooo woooo" in response to a guy who says he works for Boeing, or when a reporter asks Cliff what the song "Touch Me, I'm Dick" is about--which is an inside joke on the actual song "Touch Me, I'm Sick"). This film is so ingrained into the grunge culture of Seattle of the early 1990s, that future audiences could use a lot of background info a director's commentary would provide. At any rate, this film is a joy to watch, and cheaply priced that it's worth having in one's collection. And buy the soundtrack while you're at it.

"Bed of Nails" would have been a better title for this romance, an excruciating exercise that brings out all the worst in the genre. Christian Slater's performance is the high point of this flick, but his character is so obvious that even his subtle skills ultimately makes little difference. Slater plays Lewis, a florist who looks up one night during one of his habitual nocturnal walks and spies Mary Stuart Masterson weeping in a window. The next day he follows her to work and delivers a gorgeous arrangement of posies, leaving her guessing as to the identity of her secret admirer. We must wonder why Lewis pursues her with abandon, as Masterson's character Lisa seems nothing but a dull workaholic. Well, okay, she's also neurotic. First-time director-writer Michael Goldenberg's lopsided script lets us see the psychic damage harbored by both of the main characters, but doesn't make Lisa interesting enough to warrant all the attention heaped upon her, whereas Lewis is a model of perfection. Goldenberg often slips and slides over many details in the story. Since the dialogue is not particularly witty or meaningful, and the plot has pretty much withered by the second reel, there isn't much left on the screen to enjoy. <I>--Rochelle O'Gorman</I>

Description

A workaholic with unresolved issues of abandonment and trust falls in love with a widower who wants her to become a part of his family. Starring Mary Stuart Masterson and Christian Slater.

4 out of 5 stars Touching Love Story For Those Who Enjoy Old Style Romance.......2007-05-19

If you are like me and love both romance and beautiful flowers and believe that somehow the two should always really go together then the low profile and little talked about love story "Bed of Roses", is an essential viewing experience. Starring a perfectly teamed Christian Slater and Mary Stuart Masterton as two seemingly ill matched individuals who find love together and learn alot about themselves in the process this drama could be seen by the cynical in this day an age as being hopelessly "old fashioned". However its charm and especially its very definite message of excepting people with all their faults and weaknesses as the unique individuals they are is truly timeless. Often dismissed as simply another "chick flick" (God I hate that term!) this is one of my favourite "romance" dramas that is ideal for members of both sexes and I find a viewing of it tends to revitalise the spirit and renew hope that real love does exist out there. Visually it is a beautiful looking film ideal for watching with a special someone containing as it does numerous shots of the most beautiful flowers imaginable and many interesting shots of New York during the Christmas season sure to create a good feeling in those watching.

1 out of 5 stars Please don't believe the hype; total waste of time and insult to intelligence.......2007-04-16

Although I, like another reviewer here mentions, rely heavily on Amazon reviewers to guide me in my decision-making over mainly which movies to watch, reviews like the majority of ones presented here make me very skeptical about how much I should continue doing so. Actually, I've started selecting the lowest ratings to look at first because I'm finding in many cases those are actually more in harmony with my thoughts after seeing a movie. And this is definitely one of those cases. The Amazon review as well as the far too few negative reviews presented here reflect totally my feelings about this movie, so I will not add more except to direct you to those.

4 out of 5 stars Feel good movie.......2007-04-16

Good plot. Used real life issues. All actors were great. Great ending!

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, tender and poignant movie about love........2007-03-26

This makes a great date movie and is considered a "chick flick," however, it has a message for many young adults with troubled family history. No matter how horrible your family background/upbringing may have been....you can find love and feel deserving of that love! My husband and I enjoyed the movie and the message.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful! All the reviews are right!.......2006-11-15

I'm probably just like you. I enjoy balancing "real" public opinion before I dish out the cash, and Amazon's always been my favorite place to get honest, accurate opinions. Music....electronics.....whatever.......

A seller on EBay had this disc on auction for next to nothing, and after soooo many positive reviews, I grabbed it.

Wowwwwwwwww!!!!!!

In the Soundtrack genre, there are many unique and individual types. I have always searched for the warm, relaxing, romantic melodies that are light, graceful, and musically beautiful. Silvestri, Shore, The Newmans, Kamen, Newton-Howard, Portman....people who's work really climbs into your heart. This disc is a terrific example of this type.

Even the few vocal tunes at the begginning are enjoyable.

You will be glad you made the purchase. I put mine in the computer hours ago, and as I've been surfing, the music has been wonderful. I just restarted it for the 3rd time!

4 out of 5 stars van damme and lundgren make this worthwhile.......2006-09-03

Universal Soldier is a pretty cool idea that is executed well, by taking dead soldiers of the military and bringing them back to life, specifically, the very muscular guys. This is where Van Damme and Lundgren fill in, and we even get to see the massive Ralph Moeller several times (also played the villain Brakus in Best of the Best 2 and a fighter in Gladiator). For the reborn soldiers, old Vietnam War memories resurface from the beginning of the film, and once again the Van Damme character becomes the good guy and the Lundgren character becomes the villain.

There isn't a huge amount of action in the film, but in between scenes we get to see a lot of Lundgren's bad guy one-liners and attitude. Van Damme doesn't have many fights either until the end, when he goes up against the Lundgren character. The 6 minute fight between the 2 is easily the best part of the movie. They both get to kick some serious you know what on each other. Its a great fight scene.

Universal Soldier's plot and acting may not be great, but its the concept and supersized muscles that make the movie pretty sweet. If you are a fan of Van Damme or Lundgren, this is definetly a must see.

4 out of 5 stars If you like this movie, you'll love the Special Edition DVD!.......2006-02-10

Well, most people who are going to buy the DVD are probably familiar with the movie anyway, so I won't repeat the plot. Watching it again after several years, I really have to say it's one of the better movies of the action genre, especially when you consider that you have people doing the stunts instead of lots of CGI like in today's movies.

As for the entire Special Edition DVD itself -- it has some great extras! Much better than some of the offerings I've seen on other DVDs of movies that were released in the era of VHS and you just didn't get extras, period. A "making of" featurette, interviews with Lundgren & Van Damme, and an alternate ending to the movie -- all fairly substantial material, too --not just tacked on afterthoughts. I was surprised to get so much on this DVD for such a great price!

2 out of 5 stars Universal Soldier.......2006-02-01

My kind of movie, mindless violence. Lots of explosions and action scenes. It seemed a little dated, special effects have come a long way since 1992. Van Damme plays his usual role (macho man), so you know what to expect. Not a great movie, but if you just want to escape for an hour and a half, it will do the job.

Three prisoners on a chain gang find themselves on the loose when their prison van overturns to avoid hitting an armadillo. Two of them--Jeremy Northam (<I>An Ideal Husband</I>, <I>The Winslow Boy</I>) and Steve Zahn (<I>Out of Sight</I>, <I>That Thing You Do!</I>)--steal an RV that turns out to belong to two junior-beauty-pageant promoters on their way to organize a pageant in Happy, Texas. When Northam and Zahn find themselves stuck in Happy, their only option is to follow through with their masquerade and put on the pageant. Unfortunately, the promoters are known to be gay, which complicates matters when both men find themselves attracted to local women--Illeana Douglas (<I>Grace of My Heart</I>, <I>Cape Fear</I>) and Ally Walker (<I>While You Were Sleeping</I>, TV's <I>Profiler</I>). The cast is uniformly entertaining, but it's William H. Macy (<I>Fargo</I>, <I>Pleasantville</I>) who really steals the show as the town sheriff with a secret of his own. <I>Happy, Texas</I> was an audience favorite at the Sundance Film Festival but didn't do as well in wide release, probably because viewers expected a nonstop farce. But though the movie is a comedy, and a very funny one, its humor springs more from nuances of character than broad wackiness. The situations are a little predictable, but the performers--especially Macy--give it zest and genuine feeling. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

Popular stars Steve Zahn (FORCES OF NATURE, YOU'VE GOT MAIL, OUT OF SIGHT), Jeremy Northam (AN IDEAL HUSBAND, MIMIC), and William H. Macy (MYSTERY MEN, A CIVIL ACTION, FARGO) enliven a hilarious comedy where a case of mistaken identity leads to a beauty of a con game! When escaped convicts Harry Sawyer (Northam) and Wayne Wayne Wayne Jr. (Zahn) are pulled over in the town of Happy, Texas ... while driving a stolen Winnebago ... they think they are being arrested. Rather, they're immediately welcomed as the vehicle's owners: a gay couple who've come to orchestrate the "Little Miss Fresh-Squeezed Pre-Teen" beauty pageant! Not ones to let a good con pass them by, the pair don't hesitate to adopt flamboyant new personalities ... and quickly meet with outrageously unpredictable consequences! With a great cast of stars playing an unusually offbeat collection of characters -- you'll be more than happy you picked up this laugh-out-loud comedy treat!

5 out of 5 stars Happy Texas...Happy customer!.......2007-03-13

I ordered this movie in VHS as I understand it is out of print now. It is just the most hilarious movie. I didn't know any of the actors but Tim Robbins. I saw this movie on television and had to have it. If you like to laugh...get this movie!!! Loved it!!! And it has a good story to it as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Good movie for a Sunday afternoon..........2007-02-12

One of my favorite movies. Light humour and no violence. This a great family movie. An underground classic in the same stream of Happy Gilmore or Raising Arizona.

4 out of 5 stars Get "Happy".......2007-01-04

Happy, Texas is a smart, funny movie that kept me laughing from beginning until the end. Starring William H. Macy (Fargo), Steve Zahn (Saving Silverman) and, Jeremy Northam(The Net), "Happy" is a classic mistaken identity comedy. Northam and Zahn play escaped convicts who, while driving a stolen Winnebago, are pulled over by the sheriff of Happy, Macy. Mistaken for the gay couple hired by the town to coach beauty pageant contestants, and given the keys to the city, so to speak, Zahn and Northam set out to scam the town and rob the bank. Happy features great performances by Ally Walker and Illeana Douglas and a suprising appearance by Ron Perlman. The characters in this movie are delightfully off-beat and the laughs don't stop.

Great for movie night, highly recommended for a good time.

5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2006-11-10

this is a very funny movie, steve Zahn is his usual antic self, great supporting cast. can't keep this movie on my shelf, people 'borrow' and never return!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Be Happier.......2006-11-06

"Happy Texas" is one of my all-time favorite movies. It has a good natured sense of humor, great performances by all the actors, especially Steve Zahn and William H. Macy, and to see the handsome Jeremy Northam act convincingly as an American convict, while remembering his many roles as an Englishman with an upper-class accent, gives a special buzz to the movie. The little girls of the Miss Fresh Squeezed Pageant are a delight. Both escaped convicts (Zahn and Northam) find true love and the promise of happiness, once they serve their sentences. The story is pure fantasy -- not the way life really is but the way we wish it could be.

Everyone with whom I shared this film truly enjoyed it. It's a pity the original distribution of this film was so limited.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for any profiler fan!.......2005-09-06

I was one of those die-hard fans who had EVERY EPISODE on VHS except that pesky one or two. Lucky for everyone with old VHS hand-taped versions of the show, these great (and OMG commercial-free) DVDs are definitely worth the money if you were hard hit by the show's cancellation.

I wouldn't count on never-before-seen episodes or cast interviews in this set (at least in what I've viewed so far) but who really buys sets for the "extras"?

I give it two thumbs and two big toes up!

The price is a little steap compared to other sets, for instance West Wing season 2 is going for $45 whereas Profiler season 3 is going for $89 ($99 in stores) and the series wasn't even as popular. I give it four stars for the price, and the fact that I had to get someone to buy Season 3 from me while I purchased the set. Purchasing each individual season would have cost me a total of $400 (not including tax)...I can buy two seasons of West Wing for every one season of Profiler.

Director Roland Emmerich (<I>Independence Day</I>) fortunately brings some crackle to this otherwise unexciting sci-fi drama about two once-dead, biologically-regenerated soldiers (Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren) who turn against one another when Van Damme's character has memories of his previous life. Emmerich is typically only as good as his scripts, and this one is pretty flat. The two stars do exactly what you'd expect them to do and nothing more. The DVD release has a wide presentation, Dolby sound, trailers, notes, and Spanish subtitles. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars The war is not over for the unisols and you.......2006-11-19

Two soldiers kill each other in the Vietnam war. Their bodies are packed in ice and later regenerated to become cyborg-like soldiers for special missions. Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren play the roles of soldiers very convincingly. Van Damme is the good guy and Lundgren is the bad guy. There is also a beautiful journalist lady, which hangs out with Van Damme.

There is a lot of military action and shooting in this movie. The universal soldiers take part in resolving hostage situations. The first site is a spectacular-looking water dam at a hydro power station. There is also a futuristic-looking huge armoured truck in which the universal soldiers (unisols) live. Their bodies are kept at low temperature and they have to get medical injections in order to stay alive.

There is a large element of fiction in this movie, because dead people cannot be brought back to life in the way that the movie suggests. However, if you suspend disbelief, I'm sure that you will enjoy this high-gear non-stop action flick. I don't give it a full 5 star rating, because there are too many shootings, gruesome bloody scenes and the restaurants, hotels and gas station in the movie look very run-down. But it made me think that we are all universal soldiers who have a special mission in our own lives. Do you agree?

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Combat .......2006-08-30

Universal Soldier is one of the best action films from Jean Claude Van Damme. The film was released in 1993. The movie is based on an awfully chilly idea of a secret government project to use the reanimated corpses of dead soldiers as Universal Soldiers. These soldiers are really killer combat zombies that are programmed to receive commands remotely. They are extremely efficient killer machines that are impervious to pain, are quick to heal, and pretty much unstoppable although they tend to overheat if they stay active for too long.

In this movie, Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as a man who was supposedly killed in the war in Vietnam. He is revived in a secret biochemical, regenerative experiment as a cyborg that is controlled by the people who made him. The project initially proceeds according to plan. However, Van Damme starts recalling memories in a series of flashes from his past, and he eventually remembers the bloodthirsty, psychotic and vindictive Sergeant (Dolph Lundgren), who is also now turned into a cyborg, and is evil to the core. The fight between them resumes from where they left when they were alive. The action really gets hot when van Damme regains his memory and eventually leads to his freedom from being controlled by his creators. But the creators are not prepared to let Van Damme go free without them doing everything they can to get him back and under their control once again.

Both Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren play their respective roles exceptionally well. The pretty and sexy Alley Walker, who plays the reporter who joins Van Damme on his fight against the Universal Soldier, also gives a good performance.

Those who love action movies will be thrilled by the fierce fist fights, unforgettable stunts and kickboxing action that will compel you to watch it again and again. I recommend anybody who likes Van Damme movies or good action movies to get "Universal Soldier." It does not have the best storyline or the best plot, but it is entertaining and exciting all the same.

5 out of 5 stars very swarve and cool.......2005-10-01

This film ticks all boxes to be honest, action, comedy, emotion.

Im not going to tell you what its about because it already tells you by amazon.

This film is very swarve and cool because of the storyline, the way the soldiers dress, walk and act. Dolph lundgren plays the part of andrew scott very well. By far the best character. I love the start of the soldiers being ressurected.

The funniest part was when van damme. luc devreaux was eating in the cafe, he wants more and more food. its absolutely hilarious. Also where one of the soldiers eats a lump of raw meat in the supermarket.

The best character in this movie is Andrew Scott (lundgren). he is one of the all time best baddys in my book.

This film is extremely under-rated. 5/5 for me no doubt.

recommended to anybody that likes good films.

5 out of 5 stars shocking and pleasing and much more.......2005-02-25

it gets laughs in its comicness in certain scenes
it gets shocks
like the beginning war scenes and the fight scenes
it gets more interesting as the plot unravels
great actors picked for such roles
the perfect killing machines
one insane in the brain
and one out to save lives that shouldn't be lost in the first place
the diner scene where the soldier orders alot of food and keeps eating and the guy says how you gonna pay for this and the soldier says "I just want to eat, I don't wanna hurt you, then he kicks ass while still enjoying his meal. and his reporter female friend comes in and says "good meal" as a question that is. and he says without words "makes a happy sigh" that's hilarious. and how she looks around and see everyone who got their ass kicked from keeping him from eating his food
priceless movie
worth the watch again and again
I'm glad I saw this on tv when I was younger
and I'm glad I got this on dvd

5 out of 5 stars Universal Soldier with Van Damme.......2004-06-29

Universal Soldier realeased in 1993 is one of the best action flicks from Jean Claude Van Damme.

In fact, this film was done during Van Damme's increasing popularity.

Van Damme and Dolph play two 2 vietnam Vets who kill each other during the Vietnam War.

Actually the scene in Vietnam are intense and well directed.

Dolph, plays the psychotic and vindictive Staff Seargeant from the Army who wants to kill any Vietnamese (guilty or innocent) in path.

When Van Damme, tells the Sergeant that it's time to pull out , the crazy Sergeant sees him as a traitor and proceeds to beat up his comrade while Lungren tries to save the innocent Vietnam girl the Sergeant is holding hostage.

Eventually all of them die, or so we think.

The military eventuallys finds the dead bodies, but instead sends the Sergeant and Damme into a secret biochemical, regenerative expirement in which dead military soldiers are being revived as security soldiers known as the "Universal Soldiers".

The project at first is a success, but when Van Damme, starts recalling memories from his past, he remembers how his bloodthirsty Sergeant kills and all hell breaks loose.

It also reminds of the Robocop movie with Peter Weller, in which a dead cop is resurrected as a crime busting machine, but as the machine stars recollecting his past memories, the machine starts becoming more human.

The film has so many big budget stunts and fist fights and kickboxing action that you'll have to watch it a couple of times to appreciate the full value of this great sci fi film.

The other's film stars is the beautiful and sexy Alley Walker, who plays the reporter who joins Van Damne on his fight against the Universal Soldier.

Great critics like myself, remember Alley Walker from the great crime drama show "Profiler" on Nbc which lasted about 5 years.

Alley's character is great to watch, here character is very beautiful and has alot of humor and pizazz.

This junk-candy movie stars Shaquille O'Neal as a genie who not only becomes a little boy's protector but also a problem in his oversized ubiquity. Kids will enjoy the concept and the ongoing visual joke of juxtaposing a small child with O'Neal, but the film (directed by Paul Michael Glaser) isn't always particularly wholesome. It also has that messy, semiliterate storytelling look where editing logic goes out the window in favor of a more impulsive style of throwing out one busy image after another. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars There's only one Shaq Diesel.......2005-12-16

Shaq Diesel (aka Shaquille O'Neal) has done what few professional athletes have ever accomplished - successfully crossed over to the big screen. I like the cover of this movie. Still have yet to see the whole thing, but not because I didn't want to watch it - I keep seeming to get interupted, and I'm starting to get a little frustrated.

Based on Shaq's other endeavors (rap albums, sense of style, etc.) I can GUARANTEE this movie is high caliber. I feel like Shaq really likes kids, which is fun. I'm the sure the movie is fun too!

1 out of 5 stars a masterpiece.......2005-06-04

Kazaam is a terrific piece of filmmaking with great acting(Shaq should have won an oscar for his convincing role as the genie),a well-written script, good direction by Paul Michael Glaser who is the next Stanley Kubrick, and the production values that are above-average. A troubled teen(Francis Capra, who also should have got an supporting actor oscar for his terrific role) meets a rappin' genie and then he makes 3 wishes. This film should won an oscar for BEST PICTURE because this movie is the Citizen Kane of the 90s and it even beats Pulp Fiction as the best movie ever made because this movie is wonderful, in other words Kazaam is a bore. AVOID IT!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars HACK A SHAQ.......2005-04-17

SHAQ is one of my favourite basketball players. His dominance in the paint is spectacular. That's probably the only good thing I'm gonna say about SHAQ'S performance. When I first saw this movie at a video store, Shaq was on the front cover with a big ass smile and he's coming out a boom box, I was like `damn this could be kinda good' so I got myself a copy, went home, put it on and started watching it. After I saw it, I was like `what the hell was this all about?' I mean, I'd rather watch the Barkley and Shaq fight again or the Lakers being swept in the playoffs by Spurs in 1999. I believe the plot of Kazaam is focusing on this little punk kid called Max and his family problems rather than seeing Shaq truly perform. It was such a shame to see a great idea thrown to waste, I mean, the producers or director or the script writer could have improved a lot. Having Shaq to be a genie is a damn cool idea, I mean, think about it, the sky is the limit.

The only cool bits I liked were when Shaq came out of the boom box and he's singing that rhyme and you see all these punk kids get scared of a badass 7 foot genie. The other thing I liked was when he slammed the fat man in the hoop (Funny he never took a free throw). All the rest was stupid.

Regarding to Shaq's acting. I can't really argue on that. Reason being, Shaq is not an actor in the first place, doesn't mean he can't get away with performance. The way I see it, Shaq is acting like he is performing to an audience on TV, similar to comedy shows i.e. Eddie Murphy. I know some people think it's ugly. But I'm not going to criticise Shaq, on his acting career, everybody knows he's not an actor, and to criticise him negatively as an actor is insulting to actors because people forget about what acting really is. Some people don't take acting seriously, they think it's easy or anybody can do it, trust me, it's not, you have to study for this like any other major, such as biology, dentistry, engineering etc... you can't just act, unless your gifted, the point is, Shaq aint even an actor, so anybody that has negative comments can drop it. You wanna criticise a real actor? You can talk about other people in the movie business.

In conclusion, I believe Kazaam is for 3 year olds. Certainly not for kids over 5, and defiantly not for teenagers and you damn right it's not for anybody over 20.

1 out of 5 stars Can't stand Ka-zaam!!!!!.......2005-01-02

Jesus forgave us. Jesus forgave us all. He was unmercifully staked to a crucifix and left to slowly die, only to rise again and have to bare witness to the up chuck of a film entitled Kazaam. He gave us all a second chance and unfortunately director, Paul Michael Glaser used his second chance to create this blasphemous work of the devil. Well let me tell you, Jesus is mad at us once again and I don't think he will ever forgive us this time.

Kazaam depicts NBA star Shaquille O'Neal rapping??? and acting??? in scantily clad genie attire. Shaqs acting??? makes a drain-o enema actually seem like a pleasurable experience. It even makes his free throw ability shine in comparison. I'm still dumbfounded how someone that made such timeless greats as "Shaq diesel" and my all time favorite game "Shaq-Fu" could bomb so bad on a movie with a script as awing as this one.

You can pick up a previewed VHS copy here on Amazon.com for $0.85. I find it funny that a blank VHS tape will run you $1.00. I saved myself some money by buying a few copies of Kazaam instead of blank tapes and used them to record "Small Wonder" reruns. This is the only reason one should purchase Kazaam. If anyone is thinking of buying a copy and actually viewing it, don't! You would be better off using that $0.85 to buy a hand full of rusty nails and chewing them for the approximate running time of 1hr 45mins. Thrust me your time and money will be much better spent this way.

I gave this film??? 1 out of 5 stars only because Amazon.com doesn't allow you to give 0 stars. I wish I could rate this 0 stars. In fact I wish I could take away stars from some of the other reviewers. Hey, maybe Mr. Kazaam can help me out here.

Mr. Kazaam grant me these three wishes:

1. Give this movie 0 stars
2. Don't allow Shaq to ever act/rap again
3. Erase this movie from my memory banks for it has scard me for life.

5 out of 5 stars Shaq can do it all........2004-12-16

Shaq is truly God's gift to the world. He can sing, he can act, he can toss free throws. Let's face it, the man can do it all.

Kazaam is a movie unlike any other. Now some would say that Shaq's acting is so wooden he could play Pinnochio, but I argue with that. Shaq was playing a genie, a magical, rapping, abracadabra, hocus-pocus genie. The hippest, illest, defest, genie you ever laid eyes on. It is not for us to rate this film, it is for us to thank Shaq for taking the time to make this movie.

Now some would say that he can't even act his way through a 30 second commercial for Nestle Crunch or Burger King. I argue the point again. Shaq has the intelligence and mastery of the English language that we mortals can only hope to achieve. He is the reigning king of entertainment.

Others will also say that the man is slightly retarded and that if not for his great height, he would be lucky to ride the back of a garbage truck in Chicago as a sanitation engineer. I say those people have a real attitude problem.

Shaq can do it all. I am looking forward to his opera album, his cooking show, his line of BVD briefs, and last but certainly not least, I am looking forward to Shaq teaming up with Ice-T. Shaq will take over lead guitar duties for the reformed Body Count. Of course I hope his Broadway run doesn't interfere with the world tour.

Rock on Shaq, it's your world. We only breathe your air.

4 out of 5 stars Seven meets Silence of the Lamb!.......2005-10-06

I loved the movie! It was real! It was gritty! It carried me in through to the end!
Ally Walker was so credible with her intriguing personality traits, and yet destinguished research and detective work!
Beautiful!!
I could watch the movie over and over again, and still find more interesting things in the movie!
The only thing I didn't like was how it ended. Rather abrupt and somewhat inconclusive!

4 out of 5 stars YOU'RE IN GOOD HANDS WITH ALLY.......2005-02-04

Ally Walker reminded me of a toned down Charlize Theron in this effectively chilling thriller. Her zesty, controlled and courageous performance highlights this tale of a serial killer who has surgically removed the hands of several young children. The murders occur on the same date, and the victims progress in age over the ten year period. Walker also ties up with a young psychiatric patient who has refused to talk for ten years---she begins to see the connection, as do we the viewer. Martin Sheen has a small role as the sheriff, and Ron Perlman has a small role too near the end, but this is Walker's movie. She comes across tough, yet vulnerable. The plot has some holes: where did Walker get her scars? There is a hint of some kind of emotional trauma, her claustrophobia never being fully explained. And the ending comes rather abruptly without a full explanation of what was going on. Writer/director Michael Cohn makes the viewer put all the pieces together.
But still this is a chilling movie and Walker is perfect.

4 out of 5 stars ALLY WALKER IS A GREAT PROFILER!!!.......2004-08-16

Ally Walker stars as Audrey MacLeah, a profiler from the Texas Rangers helping the Houston Police investigate severed human hands that showed up during a flash-flood. Her lead to the case is a child with psychic abilities locked up in a mental institution. The story also has a sub-plot on how the local police resent MacLeah for being a State Law Enforcer helping them solve the case.

Although the movie has some flaws, it is still a very good suspense thriller & Ally Walker's acting is terrific. The movie was released in 1993. It's a good thing that it will be released in DVD format.

Interestingly though, Ally Walker later went on to star in the TV series "Profiler" (she played a profiler/forensic psychologist working for the FBI) from 1996 to 1999.

2 out of 5 stars 'Silence of the Lambs', it's not.......2003-07-14

I watched "When the Bough Breaks" last night as an uncut, no commercials, cable TV movie.

Up front, to give the movie credit, it was entertaining enough. No boredom. Just nagging thoughts.

Too early in the movie, the parallels to "Silence of the Lambs" become very apparent. That started with the isolated underground captivity of the key informant/psych patient and continued all the way through the confrontation with the villain in the basement.

But even before that comes the nagging impression that police department had simply not done a competent investigation. Does it really take a profiler from the state to see all these July 16 connections?

Then comes the prosecutor's nightmare. Ali simply breaks into the house without a search warrant. With all the things she sees, there goes any hope of a conviction. And this is a trained law enforcement officer?

Does a trained law enforcement officer go into as dangerous an environment as that basement without notifying a dispatcher and asking for some backup? Of course, having backup arrive from two miles away would have ruined the climax of the film.

And so many loose ends....

--The predominace of smoking, even extending to the child patient.
--Unexplained scratch-mauling of the profiler's back.
--The disappearance of the police captain in the middle of the plot.
--The ability of a cop to so effectively hypnotize an autistic child.
--The question of the patient's Jordan/Jennifer identity and reason for the wrist markings when the identity of the other twin seems so apparent.

None of these mar the film's entertainment value. It's only afterwards that one feels di
