After her success with <I>Basic Instinct</I>, Sharon Stone opted for familiar territory with this campfest that purports to be a sexualized thriller about voyeurism but in reality is more of an excuse to get Stone and costar William Baldwin out of their clothes. <I>Rear Window</I> it ain't. Stone plays it drab and quiet as a successful career woman on the rebound from a bad marriage who moves into a mysterious Manhattan high-rise. Once there, she discovers that she has a few admirers: a hunky and enigmatic neighbor (Baldwin), a popular writer of crime novels (Tom Berenger), and someone who seems to enjoy watching her every move on the building-wide surveillance system. And is one of them the serial killer who's stalking the comely female tenants? Scripted by the erstwhile Joe Eszterhas (<I>Basic Instinct</I> and <I>Jagged Edge</I>), <I>Sliver</I> follows the standard Eszterhas plot line of a protagonist suspecting that his or her lover may or may not be a vicious killer, the tension mounting as clue upon clue is discovered. Unlike both <I>Instinct</I> or <I>Edge</I>, though, <I>Sliver</I> delivers little suspense, thanks in part to a reshot ending that changed the original identity of the killer in the Ira Levin novel and confounded students of rational thought. However, if you're looking for an unintentionally funny thriller with loads of extraneous nudity, <I>Sliver</I> is an enjoyably huge hunk of cheese. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

Product Description

Young publishing executive Carly (Stone) takes an apartment in an exclusive "sliver" building in New York, only to learn that the previous tenant, who bore a great resemblance to Carly, died in a mysterious fall from the apartment balcony. When other tenants of the building begin to die likewise mysteriously, Carly begins to suspect that a killer may be inhabiting the building and that it may be either Zeke (Baldwin), the voyeuristic building owner with whom she's become involved romantically, or Jack (Berenger), a mystery writer with a suspicious quality.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WOW! WOW! WOW!.......2007-04-03

What a great movie! Erotic and scary at the same time. Talk about the ultimate in voyeuristic tendencies. This film has it. The ending will totally surprise you, though. It did me.

5 out of 5 stars A Sharon Stone Porn Movie!.......2007-04-03

One line.....great sex scenes. Sharon, you little sl**! Watch it and beat it!

4 out of 5 stars More about obsession.......2006-11-12

While this movie is somewhat predictable, who doesn't love gorgeous faces and hot love affairs? Stone and Baldwin give great performances in their exotic and obsessive affair. The screen play speaks directly to the viewer about our obsession with other peoples lives. This movie is not overly artistic, but entertaining all the same.

4 out of 5 stars Sharon Stone. Often semi-clothed. Enough said..........2006-09-21

Ah, the power of sex, and sexual images and thoughts, tawdry or otherwise. For some reason, I respond to seeing SS on the SS (silver screen) no matter how bad the script. I even liked her in "Casino" and "Basic Instinct 2". Of course, "Basic Instinct" is the Grail of SS movies. This one has many flaws, but it was never intended to be a Turner Classic Movie. As mere entertainment which offers a break from the often heart-breaking daily news, "Sliver" is not as bad as the critics said.

4 out of 5 stars Panting buffet with plot on the side.......2006-09-17

There's plenty of sex, with heavy breathing, sweat and tears. So if you're looking for a plot, but want to see Sharon Stone get busy as well, this is the film for you. Plot development is not up to par, but I don't think that was the focus of the producer. There is, however, a mystery and a guessing game that does leave you wondering who-dunnit. It's a movie characteristic of the era, so expect some predictable elements. The film is entertaining, though. NOT a family picture.

A surprise sleeper hit when released in 1992, this romantic fantasy works as a comedic adventure and a gentle tearjerker thanks to Mel Gibson's appealing performance. He plays Daniel, a daring test pilot who is deeply distraught by the apparent death of his girlfriend, Helen, in 1939. Feeling little reason to live, he volunteers for a pioneering cryogenics experiment and is thawed out 50 years later by two young boys. They bring the confused pilot home to Nat's single mom, Claire (Jamie Lee Curtis). There's a hint of romance, but Daniel desperately needs to know if Helen really died in 1939, and he discovers that love has a way of surviving a half-century leap in time. The premise is hokey and certain plot details are conveniently ignored, but Gibson, Curtis, and Elijah Wood (as Nat) hold it together with irresistible charm and just the right balance of fantasy and drama. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Forever Confused.......2007-06-05

Unless this turns out to have been a made for TV movie, I will wait until
it comes out in widescreen format before I buy it. I project my movies on
a 10 foot wide screen and I like to see the WHOLE picture in its original
format thank you very much. ( 4 stars for the movie, not the format ).

4 out of 5 stars Forever Young.......2007-03-11

Wonderful movie for young and old alike. Just enough flying to satisfy the airplane "nut" in your family, and a great love story to keep the ladies interested. You might want to keep the box of tissues handy just in case...!

5 out of 5 stars Yes, it is on widescreen.......2006-09-01

The widescreen version of Forever Young was released on LASER DISC. And it is awesome! I have it in my collection. Someone in their infinite wisdom probably decided it wasn't worth it to put that version on DVD. They were so wrong.

5 out of 5 stars love this movie!.......2006-02-23

I love this movie! The classic romance, the modern-day dilemmas, great quotes like "It's the dead guy!!" And, of course, all the flying scenes! Mel Gibson, Jamie Lee Curtis and Elijah Wood are favorites of our family and did not disappoint in this wonderful film.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Film.......2006-01-12

C'mon! Admit it! You love sappy love stories. Especially with a sci-fi twist. Yes, this is cute and harmless, and a real tear jerker. But you know you are gonna love it even more when you see it done by Mel Gibson. Jamie Lee Curtis and Elija Wood also do a great job. The main thing here is that the characters make the story believeable and enjoyable.

"It's a comedy, sort of," a title card announces at the start of Happy Endings--just after Mamie (Lisa Kudrow) has been hit by a car. So it is, but talk about an unhappy beginning! Never fear, writer/director Don Roos will fulfill the promise of that title in several unexpected ways. The story then flashes back to 1983 for Mamie's life-altering encounter with her stepbrother. Mamie and Charley (Steve Coogan) will struggle with its consequences for the rest of the film. Does her teen pregnancy explain the fact that she became an abortion counselor or that he came out of the closet? Roos doesn't say, but nor does he judge. He loves his characters--foibles and all--in his ambitious, Altman-esque follow-up to the acerbic, yet heartfelt The Opposite of Sex. As before, Kudrow is the center around which the other plotlines revolve (and her uptight, yet likable Mamie couldn't resemble TV's Phoebe less). In the end, though, Maggie Gyllenhaal's seductive Jude and Tom Arnold's sensitive Frank are Roos' most inspired creations. Their relationship is one of contemporary cinema's oddest and most touching. The happy ending for one will be real, the other imaginary, but everyone will earn the one they get. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars Multiple Plots And Intersecting Characters Make This Relationship Comedy An Ambitious Success.......2007-03-27

When Don Roos' "The Opposite of Sex" dropped into theaters almost ten years ago, I instantly became a fan. That film featured Christina Ricci's first grown-up character and easily her best and most fully realized performance to date. Wicked and cynical and bitterly funny, it is a film that manages to strike an unusual balance. Taking the coming-of-age genre, turning it upside down with great doses of political incorrectness, but ultimately grounding things with a realness--it is a deft comedy that stands the test of time. Taking a detour with the Paltrow/Affleck weepie "Bounce," Roos fashioned an earnest if not particularly entertaining film. Finally, after a five year hiatus, Roos returns with another film--the coyly titled "Happy Endings." An ambitious, and heavily populated, ensemble comedy--"Happy Endings" may be gentler in spirit than "The Opposite of Sex," but it is no less worthy.

In the film's opening moments, a woman is frantically running down the street and is plowed into by a car. The accident appears to be serious, but as we pull away from the wreckage--the film announce itself as a comedy. It's hard not to appreciate that! However, I was still fearful that this was going to be one of those impossibly quirky pictures that people seem to love so much. But I needn't have worried. Telling multiple intersecting stories, "Happy Endings" puts together an unlikely cast including Lisa Kudrow, Jesse Bradford, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jason Ritter, Tom Arnold, Laura Dern, Steve Coogan, and Bobby Cannavale (and many others). And while there is a certain preciousness to the film, and while some of the situations seem unlikely or outlandish--the film's contrivances end up be overshadowed by the able cast and genuinely funny script. The characters, even engaged in the most bizarre circumstances, are still grounded in a reality that makes this relationship picture work.

For, at heart, "Happy Endings" is all about exploring different relationships. Covering plotlines involving abortion, blackmail, golddigging, incest, stolen sperm, prostitution, and sexual variations of all kinds--this film sounds much more distasteful than it actually is. It is within these deviant stories that we uncover the dynamics that make complex relationships work or not. The film's many entanglements include different variations--brother/sister, gay couples, father/son, younger woman/older man, heterosexual couples, counselor/client, and so much more. With smart and funny dialogue and appealing performers, it's hard not to get caught up in the film's ribald spirit.

I'm not saying that "Happy Endings" is a perfect film, but I admired it's scope. I was fascinated by the various stories--even the ones I didn't particularly believe. The picture wraps itself up fairly neatly--which one might suspect from its title. But overall, I found "Happy Endings" to be engaging, witty, and entertaining with some nice dramatic moments sprinkled in with the outrageousness. It's all edited together deftly as you spend just the right amount of time with each story before moving on. Never dull, the intriguing "Happy Endings" is definitely worth a look. KGHarris, 03/07.

4 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars really. Excellent performances with a muddled script.......2007-01-07

As others have indicated, HAPPY ENDINGS just has a few TOO MANY storylines going on. It is inevitable that some of them get short shrift. I'd say the story line about the lesbian couple working on having a child that might or might not be the offspring of one partner in a male couple feels just a little contrived and a bit uninteresting. That's a bit of shame, because the result is that Laura Dern is wasted.

The primary "plot" deals with Lisa Kudrow's character, who gave up a child for adoption as a teenager, and is now confronted with the possibility of knowing what happened to her child...but in order to do so, she must work with a blackmailing documentary filmmaker wannabe. Confusing? Well, it's not confusing when you watch it, but it also doesn't make much sense. She becomes interested in both the making of a documentary and the loony-tunes filmmaker himself. The way this film progreses and the work they do on it is not constructed very convincingly...and while I REALLY like the work Lisa Kudrow does, this plot point was meandering at best.

But the performances ARE very lively and convincing for the most part. Kudrow is very good indeed, as is Maggie Gylenhaal. And I want to give kudos to Tom Arnold. This man is often thought of as a mere bozo or an idiot, and he has indeed played that part in many awful movies. But once in awhile, he does something to make me wish more directors would give him more to work with. TRUE LIES was a great movie that he nearly stole. And in HAPPY ENDINGS, he plays something kinda rare...a well-to-do middle-aged white man who is actually a decent person. And he pulls it off. Arnold has an air of humbleness to him that he incorporates well into his part. I certainly haven't approved of much of his public behavior, but his problems have molded the things he can draw on as an actor, and they served him well.

Bobby Cannavale is a fun actor, but his part is very underwritten. I REALLY liked him in THE STATION AGENT (a must see). Steve Coogan's role is also written a bit broadly, but he does a fine job nonetheless.

See it for the acting, and a few affecting moments. But if you want taught construction, an effective resolution, deeper meaning, you'll be disappointed. My wife and I enjoyed watching the film, and didn't feel we had wasted our time...but it does have its problems. Not for children!

1 out of 5 stars The moral to the story of this film is.......2006-11-16

that you cannot learn much new from a film that merely presents you with a cast of troubled individuals who make bad choices for themselves and then seem to just deal with them though nihilism or naive avoidance.

Trying to create an art film by pretending to question what they pretend are not actually the very controversial topics that they are (i.e. abortion, homosexuality, invitro fertilization, etc) within many subplots...this film ultimately fails by purposely failing to make a main plot out of any intellectual points of question brought about in the story.

It is almost like the director Don Roos had just taken a screenwriting class and was trying to incorporate various taught film mechanics into an independent film. The captioning that is spread throughout the film is almost cliched and ultimately leads the viewer down deadends.

Does Mamie regret not aborting the son she later meets after the whole movie is intertwined with what blackmail she goes through to meet him? She seemed to have no intention of hunting down her given-up child before being blackmailed to do so. After she does meet him, which is shown without any audible dialogue, there is nothing more said about the subject, or shown, other than her dancing at the end and he is in the room. All we know is that she nervously claims not to be "pro-life" after Jude derides her for referring to her fetus as a baby. The only real reaction we are given is overblown and questionable after she runs out of the boy's home and is subsequently hit by a car. We are told at the beginning that she is not dead, and we are shown this at the end. But to just be "not dead" at the end is not a very good character analysis.

Most of the characters are dealing with new cultural troubles such as: questions about who a son's sperm donor was, a homosexual affair, a gay boy being blackmailed for his very gayness, a girl questioning abortion because she does not know if the child is this gay boy's or his fathers...this all seems to be presenting us with problems that most people are not dealing with because they are problems of some people of non-norm cultural immorality.

I think Roos is just trying to present these problems as problems to be considered as normal problems, and not for what they are, which we might not know , but he sure does not help us understand through any point of view on his part. Maybe that is because he does not know anything more about them himself than just being able to identify them. It is as if he had originally been unaware that adultery, sex business work, and abortion causes such identifiable problems? Well, I guess it's a start, but it makes quite an intellectually devoid and soul-less film experience.

I think the actually presented irony of "happy endings" by Mamie's anxiety over what Javier says they are for the women he lays is one of the few real clues given that could help to really identify this "sad" film.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant beginning and middle can only reap a happy ending!.......2006-09-15

I have to say that `Happy Endings' will go down as one of the most fulfilling experiences I've had with cinema this year. At the film's closing I was left content and approving, never once feeling gypped or left wanting. I was completely satisfied, which is funny because I've read a few reviews where people loved everything but the ending, but to me you can't go wrong ending on a close-up of the wonderfully talented Maggie Gyllenhaal singing us a lullaby.

`Happy Endings' (a title made in reference to the act of making a massage customer EXTRA happy) is a collage of people's lives interacting and eventually coming together for a `happy ending'. We have Mamie (Kudrow) who at a young age was impregnated by her step-brother Charley (Coogan) and since then they've had very little contact. Charley is now `out of the closet' and living with is boyfriend Gil (Sutcliffe) whose best friend Pam (Dern) and her lover Diane (Clarke) have just had a son (Pam being the mother) and are starting to ware on Charley's sanity. Mamie on the other hand is involved with massage therapist Javier (Cannavale) and is not the slightest bit happy with her life, and that only gets worse after meeting Nicky (Bradford) who claims to know where her illegitimate son (the one she had with Charley and then gave up for adoption) is and wants to reunite them under the circumstance that he can film it for his documentary submission into film school.

Then we have Jude (Gyllenhaal), a young attractive floozy who joins a band fronted by Otis (Ritter), a young boy confused about his sexuality and somewhat obsessed with his boss (Charley). Jude exploits that fact, manipulating him into have sex with her in order to steer his father Frank (Arnold) away from speculation his homosexuality, and then using it as blackmail against Otis, forcing him to help her hook up with his father. She is clearly only after his money (he's loaded) and this upsets Otis, but the idea of his father condemning his sexuality leave him no choice but to assist Jude.

As these stories collide we are only drawn to each character, good and bad, and brought to an understanding of what each of them needs to be truly happy. In the end we are given one long `happy ending' showing the outcome of all of these situations and how everyone involved was affected by the outcome...all except for Jude. Her ending is pure speculation, and while that may distress some it really made sense to me. Jude was by far the most engaging and interesting character in the film, due in part to Gyllenhaal's brilliant Oscar caliber performance, and to have her be the only one to get nothing out of the interaction in a way leaves me satisfied, for she was also the most mysterious of the group, for while her intentions where clear what was unclear was her motivation.

Gyllenhaal did absolutely outstanding here, delivering a performance that outweighed most I've seen all year and definitely deserved some awards attention. Also, Kudrow did wonderful, playing against type, but not `Wonderland' against type for her character still infused the comedic timing she is so well loved for...she just honed it into a more mature comedy. Tom Arnold and Steve Coogan are also wonderfully cast, and while she's only on screen a short time, Laura Dern is always a pure delight. I would recommend this film to anyone for it truly was the most satisfying experience, one of at least, I've had for all of 2005.

4 out of 5 stars `Happy Endings' keeps you guessing with rarely a dull moment.......2006-09-06

I liked this film because it really was interesting to see how everything got connected. The director and writer Don Roos did a great job with the beginning of the film by immediately grabbing every one's attention! It had so many stories that you had to keep up with and they all did get solved in the end but if you weren't paying attention or thinking then you would have missed one or two of them.

While the story is very interesting and does keep the audience focused, by the end I think it runs a little too long. I also think that actually making the movie have a happy ending kind of softened the impact of the film. Another thing that sort of bugs me was the constant written narration borders that kept appearing. It was creative for the first couple of times but after a while, it got annoying and really took the focus off what was happening in the film.

The acting however in the film was great although I have to mention a few performances that stood out above the rest and those were Lisa Kudrow, Maggie Gyllenhall, Jesse Bradford and Tom Arnold. Kudrow plays a great serious and deep role. Arnold's character is also very dramatic and convincing. Bradford doesn't play the heartthrob here but the wacky documentary film maker. And Gyllenhall's performance is sleazy and cruel. This is Don Roos third attempt at a feature film, and I think it's probably his best too! It's not a perfect film but it is shot so that you feel the emotions of the characters and feel bad for them at times, and find them amusing at times as well.

`Happy Endings' has a terrific story (s), great acting, but it has a few down falls and to me the most disappointing thing about the film was the ending. I think the biggest joke this film could have played on the audience was to make the ending an oxymoron to the films title. But like I said already, it's a good movie to see because the performances are terrific and different then most roles the actors and actresses played beforehand. Happy viewing.

Based on actual, if enhanced, facts, this bouncy comedy stars David Schwimmer and Chris Cooper as the Texas surgeons who pumped up women's profiles by inventing silicone breast implants in 1962. Dispensing scathing social commentary, this follows the mismatched and rather unsympathetic pair over three decades. Cooper, an often underrated actor, breaks away from his usual typecasting as a laconic cowboy. He plays an angry, Machiavellian doctor who sees potential and enormous financial reward in Schwimmer's gelatinous inventions. Schwimmer displays more range than we've previously seen, and there are some interesting supporting faces amid all that jiggly silicone. It is not the vulgar farce you might expect from the title, but a stylish blend of comedy and drama. <I>--Rochelle O'Gorman</I>

Is nice but at times a bit boring. The history in the film is good but a bit slow at times.

5 out of 5 stars Based on a true story, slightly augmented.......2006-07-05

HBO has a great knack at taking bits of history which we never think much about, and turning them into incredibly entertaining movies. Example: This breezy, very clever satire about the rise and fall of the two inventors of the silcone breast implant.

David Schwimmer and Chris Cooper star as the two doctors who come up with the idea of the implant, and both play there parts very well. Say what you want about Schwimmer, (I never liked him in other roles), but he fairs pretty well here, as he almost constantly shifts from burnt-out loser to a man with new-found riches.

4 out of 5 stars A slightly augmented history of silicone breast implants.......2005-03-29

"Brest Men" is not exactly a black comedy, but it has some moments that are definitely in that direction. This 1997 HBO film tells the story, "slightly augmented," of the invention, development, and commercial exploitation of silicone breast implants. The punny phrase "slightly augmented" means "fictionalized in this case. Silicone gel breast implants were invented by the plastic surgeons Thomas Cronin and Frank Gerow at the University of Texas in the early 1960s. They were then developed as a commercial product by Dow Corning in 1962. This film tells the story of the rise and fall of silicone gel breast implants in the persons of Dr. Christopher "Kevin" Saunders (David Schwimmer) and Dr. William Larson (Chris Cooper), a pair of reconstructive surgeons in Texas.

The film begins with the first in a series of shots of women whose faces cannot be seen who bare their breasts and explain what they think about them. Both the breasts and the comments are across the spectrum, and constitute one of the more thought provocative parts of "Breast Men." They also pop up often enough throughout the film to ground it back in reality. That is because as Doctors Saunders and Larson create this new field of reconstructive surgery things get a bit strange, whether it is the bizarre condescension of their colleagues to their proposal or the rich life style they are able to afford because of the success of their practice. Although there is mention of reconstructive breast surgery for women who have undergone a mastectomy, that is quickly ignored for women who want larger breasts.

Saunders gets the idea for breast implants when he spies a neighbor using breast enhancement cream and he is apparently sincere in his desire to help women, at least until he gets to operate on the woman of his dream (Emily Proctor), who ends up becoming his wife. Larson is a senior surgeon who originally dismisses the idea but gets tired of being considered a joke by the other doctors at the hospital and gets in touch with a Dow Corning representative (Matt Frewer) who takes Saunders original design, with used a saline solution, and upgrades it to silicone. It takes a while for the two doctors to find a woman (Kathleen Wilhoite) willing to undergo the new procedure and then to get their practice up and running, at which point it becomes extremely lucrative. Along the way the two doctors enjoy the good life but come to a parting of the ways over who deserves the lion's share of the credit for this whole business.

Then the first stories start coming out about implants that are leaking and the first lawsuits get filed. The story tries to provide both sides of the controversy, but it is hard for the doctors spouting statistics over the phone to compete with a lawyer (Terry O'Quinn) in court pointing out that the same company that made the implants made Agent Orange and holding up examples of implants that have dissolved. Yes, you get to see dozens of pairs of breasts in this movie, but you are also going to be confronted with film of actual surgery and examples of implants that have gone horribly wrong. Believe me when I say it is going to be the latter examples that will stand out in your memory.

The punch line for the film is historically accurate because it did turn out that what was profitable to give was even more profitable to take away. It is not that the history of silicone gel breast implants is a joke, but there are certainly surreal elements to it. There will be parts of "Breast Men" that you will find funny and others that will make you uncomfortable, and in both cases those responses will be appropriate. Writer John Stockwell (who played Dennis Guilder in "Christine" and Cougar in "Top Gun") does a nice job of mixing together the diverse threads and if I were to point to the moment in the film where it really hits home it would be when Saunders's former wife comes to his office to pay him a visit. You get more than you bargained for when you watch this movie.

4 out of 5 stars "Super Size Me".......2004-04-09

"Breast Men" is a HBO film focusing on the two doctors with the questionable honour of being the surgeons who pioneered silicone gel implant breast augmentation. Dr William Larson (Chris Cooper) is working at Texas Medical Centre where he oversees young intern Dr. Christopher (Kevin) Saunders (David Schwimmer). Larson is suffering from a lack of recognition in his disrespected field. When Saunders discusses his interest and innovative ideas in breast implants, Larson is at first appalled, but he eventually becomes interested. The two form a partnership under great adversity--the hospital they both work for is violently opposed to any connection with breast implants. Larson and Saunders become rejects and outcasts in the medical profession as they launch their new silicone gel implant augmentation technique.

Soon the two doctors have a lucrative practice. The patients and the money roll in. But it's clear it won't last, and the film covers both the rise and fall of the silicone gel breast implant era.

While the story is just a little too cut and dried at times, overall, the film is extremely interesting, and there's even a fair touch of humour. The doctors--Larson and Saunders are foils for one another. Larson is respectable and knows to concentrate the sales pitch on the lofty ideals--women elect to have this sort of surgery for their self-esteem, so it must inherently be a good thing, blah, blah. Saunders, however, is a man with vision. He's not shy about marketing his product at all. They need each other, but at the same time, their different approaches destroy the partnership. Both roles are well cast and well acted. I had a very good friend who decided to have silicone implants in the 80s--before all the health problems arose, and I thought she was bonkers to do it. She fell into the trap--as did many women--thinking that if she had to pay $X for surgery, she might just as well have larger ones. One of the most intriguing questions raised by the film is the question of medical ethics. If this elective surgery is performed solely to please, then what happens if you start trying to please the unpleasable? At what point do you cross the line because it's "what the woman wants"? And what about serial augmentation? The film explores the question of medical ethics through the character of Dr Saunders and his innovative mega-breast surgery--a novelty that swept strip bars, adult magazines and films. He was known as "the Penthouse plastic surgeon."

There are several scenes in a strip bar--along with the obligatory swinging around the pole. There are also many scenes of women showing their breasts in screen-test sorts of scenarios, so this is not one for the kiddies. For anyone even mildly interested in the breast implant industry, the film is worth watching. It's an interesting rise and fall film--replete with addiction, greed, jealously, vanity, and all those other essential human qualities-displacedhuman.

2 out of 5 stars Mildly engaging and amusing, rather forgettable movie.......2003-11-15

This is the Hollywood take on the history of the boob job. There are obviously at least two films someone with this particular brief might set out to make. The one is quite interesting, a piece of social history in which all kinds of interesting themes could have been explored. The other is a brilliant excuse to put an abundance of t & a (well, t anyway) on the screen, perhaps under the cover of a more serious movie purporting to be a piece of social history, etc. The second of these movies is what Lawrence O'Neil has mostly made. There is indeed an abundance of t on the screen. And there is a piece of not very strong drama limping alongside it. For the first half, this is more or less comedy and the two doctors Saunders (Schwimmer) and Larson (Cooper) try to sell their ideas for breast implants to their suspicious, offended and perplexed colleagues and potential patients. This is sometimes mildly amusing may be the most effective aspect of the film. Then it turns a bit darker as Saunders and Larson hit the top and start to quarrel and quite a lot darker as things sink into death, divorce and the litigation and recrimination of those who claim to have been harmed by the implants. While as comedy it is intermittently mildly effective, as drama however it's pretty shallow and forgettable and as social comment trite. Running through the film is footage from a fictional documentary about breast implants in which a parade of women appear on camera, talk a little bit about their body image or whatever, all very serious. ... The whole film is really a bit like that.

As a slightly titillating drama made in 1997 based around the history of a somewhat squalid industry, in which a comic strand early on is crowded out by darker, more troubling themes as things progress, it has quite a lot in common with "Boogie Nights". But "Boogie Nights" is a much better movie.

Befitting its boy-band sensibility, <I>On the Line</I> is an amiable vehicle for 'N Sync's Lance Bass, who makes his star-producer debut with this bright-eyed romantic comedy. Bass plays a Chicago adman who meets the girl of his dreams (newcomer Emmanuelle Chriqui) on the "L" train but fails to get her name and phone number. His roommates (including 'N Sync bandmate Joey Fatone) devise a scheme to find the elusive "L-train girl," and like the similarly plotted <I>Serendipity</I>, this love-struck scenario plays out with standard-issue subplots and supporting characters, propelled by a pleasant pop soundtrack and a soulful appreciation for the music of Al Green (who makes one of several celebrity cameos). <I>On the Line</I> was sanitized for a younger audience (with obvious dubbing to replace cruder language), but the squeaky-clean approach is refreshing, even when an end-credit sequence (featuring 'N Sync's Chris Kirkpatrick and Justin Timberlake) suggests a comedic vitality that the rest of the movie lacks. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars A nice film for a change.......2006-12-01

Speaking personally, I enjoyed this film: it is lite, entertaining, and entirely devoid of smut and violence, entertaining enough for the whole family to watch and enjoy, thoroughly harmless good fun. Just a really nice story about two likeable people who you desperately want to see get together. Hey, everybody knows people like this: sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

Maybe it's not quite "Sleepless in Seattle", but if you liked that one, then this one will appeal to you.

Anyrate, that's the opinion of one world-weary and jaded fellow who hasn't enjoyed a romantic comedy so much for a very long time.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect gift for the tweenie bopper.......2006-08-21

Boy finds true love in Chicago on the "L-train" but forgets to ask her name and number. It's a case of the one who got away but hoping to find again with help from the Chicago papers. The only problem is ... when friends get in on the game it takes someone yelling "Have you ever been in love? It's worth the ride" to a group of subway passengers. One thing is for certain ... every tweenie bopper who got this was amused and delighted.

4 out of 5 stars Search for a Soul Mate.......2006-08-20

A surprisingly entertaining movie in which a young man working for an advertising firm is always losing out in life, on the job, as he fails to get credit for his ideas and in romance as he always chokes up before he asks a girl for a date or her phone number. It is young love at its best with music appropriate for the young set and the friends of the young man who support him, then take advantage of him. He meets a girl on the El in Chicago with whom he connects then hesitates and lets her go without
finding out who she is. The plot is about him and his friends trying to locate her with twists and turns all the way. Good clean fun recommended for the romantic of all ages. Review based on purchased VHS.

4 out of 5 stars Romcom for the MTV generation.......2006-03-11

Harmless feelgood romance has rarely been done better or looked more eyecandingly pleasing than here. The visual inventiveness of the opening teenage band scene isn't quite lived up to in the rest of the film (the singer chokes when being urged to dedicate the song to the girl of his dreams - we see him sweat and literaly 'feel naked'). Nevertheless, 90 minutes of sweetnatured and agreeable diversion.

4 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2005-09-16

I don't remember what made me decide I wanted to see this movie, I think it was the fact that Dave Foley from Newsradio and Kids In The Hall was in it. I mean you look at the cover, Joey Fatone in some retarded pose with a guitar, Lance Bass looking like a grinning mannequin, and the title outlined in pink and purple, you have to figure it's substanceless preteen-oriented fluff, but if Dave Foley chose to be involved with it maybe there's more to it. Well it's really not the preteen-oriented movie I feared, it's basically just a standard twentysomething romantic comedy with an emphasis on collegiate humour, and is above average for it's genre. I'm assuming the movie totally wasn't written with the N Sync members in mind, and if anyone else from young hollywood had been cast for Lance Bass' part the movie would have had a better shot at reaching a wider audience. Nothing against Lance or Joey though, they're fine in their parts. It was really mostly the cover that put me off considering watching the movie. This movie is an equal peer of movies like The Bachelor, The Sweetest Thing, 40 Days And 40 Nights, 100 Women, and Loser.

5 out of 5 stars LMFAO!!!.......2007-05-01

Oh good lord!! I am hooked to this movie already... it's been a while to have a laugh on my face and this is 100% comedy movie!! I couldnt even stop laughing for a minute!! watering my eyes but good thing that I didnt haveto go pee couple of times from laughing so hard and I didnt eat or drink anything while I watch this movie... this is a MUST to buy!!! Devon Sawa (known in Now and Then, Final Destination and other movies) and Andrew Keegan (known in Brokenheart Club, Camp Of Nowhere and other movies). I am so glad I bought this movie and I got this package today!! I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars GOOD FLICK.......2006-01-27

I agree with Bill Baiter's review. This is a pretty funny movie. The whole cast is great. Andrew Keegan is way HOT. I don't know where he came from but I am his new biggest fan. And Amanda Detmer is a really talented actress. She's whacky and adorable in that Debra Messing (Will & Grace) kind of way. There are some LOL moments in this movie. So, if you enjoy a good old screwball comedy, EXTREME DATING is for you!!!

4 out of 5 stars Three and two third Stars Really.......2006-01-13

This is pretty funny movie. Though full of slapstick, which is always good, the thing I like most is I could relate to characters. There's not the crazy guy, the sensitive guy, the I-don't-know-I'm-hot girl, instead, just 20 somethings, looking for love and getting in ass-backwards situations. Amanda Detmer steals the movie really. She is super funny when she tries to seduce guys, but ends up making a fool of herself. And there are some great scenes with some old coots that pay off perfectly. And if you ever wondered what the guy looks like who does the voice of Bender on Futurama, he plays one of the two kidnappers. Extreme Dating has a lot of laughs in it.

2 out of 5 stars "Does my butt look big in this?" Yes, Devon..........2006-01-04

'Extreme Dating' is some sort of sequel to 'Extreme Ops', in that it stars Devon Sawa again and has the word 'Extreme' at the start of the title. But that's where the similarity ends: 'Extreme Ops' was a very mediocre action adventure movie, while 'Extreme Dating' is a hopelessly shallow knockabout comedy.

That shouldn't matter, though, if all you're looking for in a movie are some pretty people to look at - there are plenty here, and that's what I bought it for (on import from Thailand). So long as it's not Devon Sawa you want to drool over. If you loved the slim blond boy of 'A Cool Dry Place' (he's so sexy in this), 'Idle Hands' (very funny horror comedy) or even 'Final Destination', then maybe you shouldn't buy this movie. In 'Extreme Ops' they tried to hide his weight gain behind lots of stubble and baggy clothes, but this time there's no doubt about it. He's gone Kirstie Alley fat! He has a double chin, man-boobs, a belly and a seriously big butt. He must have put on 50 pounds since 'Final Destination'. (His early bios say he's 6' tall and weighs 135lb - I'd say he's closer to 200 now.) He wears loose shirts and huge trousers to try and hide it, but it's no good. He's just not attractive at his current weight, and they seem to have added some lines to the script to this effect. Being totally honest, Meatloaf (who has a kind of extended cameo role in the movie) looks fitter - and lighter - than Devon.

If you're having trouble believing it, look more closely at some of his other stuff and you'll see he's been battling his weight since about 2000. He is very chubby in the Eminem video 'Stan', though he's lost a lot of it again for 'Slackers'. Then he is seriously fat and pasty in the movie 'Extreme Ops' but looks great in the promo material for it. I'm guessing there are issues underlying his weight problem, but I don't know what they are.

I haven't seen Devon's latest film, 'Shooting Gallery', but I know it's out on DVD and I'm going to buy it soon. Here's hoping he's gone on an Extreme Diet...

The true strength of this film lies in its clearly defined and original characters. The film has a clear sense of direction and the motivaltional complexity of Blue's character is an asset rather than a liability. Jennifer Rubin gives a powerful performance as Blue, a killer who does not take herself too seriously, but suffers from deep childhood trauma. Rubin plays the character with a careful balance between passionate intensity and lighthearted humanity. As a result, Blue is an easily believable character who elicts the sympathy and respect of the audience. This film is rich with entertaining allusion, notably the refence to the nose bandage in Chinatown. A truly wonderful film.

A sleeper hit when released in 1992, this romantic fantasy works as a comedic adventure and a gentle tearjerker thanks to Mel Gibson's appealing performance.

C'mon!
