Customer Reviews:
Good show comes to an end.......2007-06-18
This is one of the best of the seasons that I have seen. If there was one problem than it was that they pushed the losing a team-mate thing too far and the need to drag Vala's father into this particular season was really unnecessary. There were some really good episodes in this one my particular favorite was when they were dealing with the cloned Ba'als and the camping trip that they took. But all in all this was a good season. Seeing it come to a close is hard, but it'll end with a bang and I look forward to those two movies when they come out.
Help me out..........2007-06-16
Someone will have to help me out here. I have watched the first two seasons of this series, and frankly, it is not good. Do they get better as the seasons go on? Compared to others in this genre, and other TV Series of any genre, this series, the first two years, at least, are infantile. The acting is bland at best. The story set-ups are done without any imagination. The premise is very quickly worn out. This actually went for ten seasons?! I'm sorry, I cannot figure out the target audience. The same folks who like other stuff like this cannot like this one.
More real then most.......2007-06-15
This show was the best scifi show ever, I am not one for science fiction, it's boring and unrealistic; however Stargate was something of anomaly it was actualy entertaining and seemed realistic. I think it had a lot to do with the Air Force's influance on the show and how the characters were writen. Stargate SG-1 will be missed Immensely by many people including me. I hope that the dvd movies are a success so there will be more in the future.
The right time to end a fantastic show.......2007-06-14
As much as I would love SG-1 to go on forever, I know that ending at the landmark tenth season is the right thing to do in order to make sure such a wonderful series goes out with the dignity and respect that it deserves. SG-1 broke the mold in terms of special effects, production values, and sheer entertainment. It was able to look at the sci-fi genre in a different light, much like Farscape was able to do. It could make fun of itself while retaining its integrity, and it wasn't so dark and self-righteous as shows like Battlestar Galactica that it couldn't have a goofy episode here and there.
With the promise of at least two movies and the open door for more, the tenth season ends quietly and perfectly. Looking back, I realize that after O'Neill left, it just wasn't the same show. It was a lot of new characters, a new enemy, and a completely different angle. And while this did a lot to freshen up the storylines, it just wouldn't have held past two seasons of Mitchell leading the team. What was wonderful about the tenth season was Vala. She was a truly unapologetic character with a great storyline, and even though her bombastic character had the potential to be a scene-stealer, the amazing Claudia Black knows how to give as much as she takes. Her relations with each member of SG-1 and General Landry are incredibly entertaining and brought season 10 up to a whole new level.
Overall, the stories remained entertaining and meaningful, and the wonderful characters that we've know for ten years remained true to themselves while the newer characters remained true to the Stargate universe. Season ten feels like a good time to wave goodbye to an old friend without ever regretting a single moment of it.
The longest lasting series I know of ............2007-06-12
And I'm currently watching the eleventh (and final) season's episodes every Friday night. I'll buy Season Eleven when it's released and own them all, then. <g>
SG-1 battles onward in Season 10, this time with the Ori as public enemy number one. What needs saying about Season 10 when any who have already watched every previous season know what SG-1 does?! They do it some more!
Some sci-fi television series I have to own to watch again, some I don't. Stargate: SG-1 is one I have to own! :-)

<I>Stargate SG-1</I> soldiers on with this five-disc, 20-episode set from the sturdy franchise's ninth season (2005-06), incorporating numerous changes while continuing to distinguish itself as one of the television's best sci-fi shows. Longtime star Richard Dean Anderson makes only brief cameos these days, after seven seasons as Lieutenant Colonel and one as Brigadier General Jack O'Neill. Stalwarts Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, and Michael Shanks (as Samantha Carter, Teal'c, and Daniel Jackson, respectively), are still on hand, but with Season 9, Ben Browder (known to many genre fans for his lead role in the excellent <I>Farscape</I> series) takes over as leader of SG-1, the Stargate project's ace team in the field. As Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, Browder effectively projects the same kind of cocky irreverence that was Anderson's trademark, but he has a ways to go before he fully equals the latter's appeal. More engaging is fellow <I>Farscape</I> alum Claudia Black as Vala (Daniel Jackson's one-time love interest and a vixen, thief, and liar who becomes an integral part of the team during the several episodes in which she appears), while Beau Bridges is capable but uninspiring as Major General Hank Landry, who runs the show back on Earth.
Then there are the bad guys. With longtime nemeses the Goa'uld having essentially been eliminated, we now have the Ori, whose agenda of domination through religion provides the season's principal story arc. They're certainly a timely addition. With their "Book of Origin," rejection of free will, and goal of subduing all heretics and "unbelievers," the Ori resemble extreme fundamentalists of various stripes; on the other hand, when the U.S. military talks about crusades and "ridding the galaxy of evildoers," parallels to the Bush administration's war on terror are obvious and unavoidable. Problem is, while we know that the Ori are relentless, devious, and bloated with the pride that always attaches itself to false gods, we can't actually see them. They have semi-human apostles, called Priors, who spread "enlightenment" and bad mojo (not to mention plagues of carnivorous bugs) all over the universe. They have mighty ships that that leave the good guys in dire straits in the climactic battle that ends the season (typically, little is resolved, leaving viewers to salivate for Season 10). But the Ori themselves are kin to the all-knowing Ancients, who exist not in recognizable physical form but as energy; unlike previous villains, from the Goa'uld to the Replicators to <I>Stargate Atlantis</I>' Wraith, when it comes to the Ori, there's no there there. Meanwhile, the writers' replacement of the ancient Egyptian iconography used in earlier seasons with various aspects of Arthurian legend (Merlin, Knights of the Round Table, sword in the stone) is sometimes cool, sometimes merely hokey.
As always, <I>Stargate SG-1</I>'s production values and effects remain first-rate, even as the stories become more character-driven and less dependent on spectacular action sequences. The DVD transfers are excellent. Special features are similar to previous box sets: audio commentary on all episodes, featurettes focusing on sets, props, and special effects, and five "directors series" entries devoted to particular episodes. <I>--Sam Graham</I>

excellent.......2007-05-15
I love stargate and would recommend it to anyone who is a sci-fi fan or a fan of the original movie. The writers did a good job of keeping the series running even though they defeated the 'bad guys' from the first eight seasons. The original is still the best. :)
Pretty good.......2007-05-12
There were some innovative story lines and some really amusing episodes. It's just what the show needed.

The beat goes on for Stargate SG-1 in this five-disc set containing all 20 episodes from the show's eighth season. If that beat is now a bit more faint than in previous years, that's not particularly surprising when a franchise has been around this long; what's more, if Season 8 has some fairly odd aspects to it ("Threads," which appears to have been planned as the final episode of the entire series, is followed by two more in this set alone
not to mention an unexpected renewal that led to an all-new Season 9), that too isn't exactly unusual in the wacky world of series television.
Some significant changes are apparent in Season 8. Jack O'Neill (series star Richard Dean Anderson) has been promoted to Brigadier General and is now top dog (as he puts it, the guy who "spent my whole life stickin' it to the man" now is the man). The existence of the stargate, an artificially created "wormhole" through which one can instantly travel to different worlds light years away from Earth, is no longer a well-guarded secret. And Stargate Command itself now exists primarily to "develop new weapons and technologies to defend the planet" from our various alien antagonists--principally the "Replicators," relentless little bug-machines poised to take over not only Earth but the entire galaxy.
The rest of the SG-1 core cast (Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, and Michael Shanks) is intact. But whereas Anderson, who has steadily reduced his role in the show, wasn't much missed in Season 7, one wishes there were more of him this time around; O'Neill's general insouciance and aversion to techno-speak are a welcome antidote to the kind of sci-fi gobbledygook (discussions about "a time dilation field on the planet Hala" and such) that now threatens to take precedence over the action and fine special effects that distinguished earlier seasons. Most of all, while there are still all manner of villains (Anubis, Ba'al, the ever-present Goa'uld) to contend with, as well as a few good guys (the Asgard, the rebel Jaffa) to help our heroes fight the good fight, Stargate SG-1's writers and creators may be running out of steam. Hence we get an episode like the very peculiar "Citizen Joe," featuring Dan Castellaneta as an average guy who sees "visions" (i.e., clips from past episodes) of the SG-1 team in action and becomes obsessed with proving that the whole stargate project really exists; an uneasy combination of self-parody and self-congratulation, this episode, while not unamusing, sticks out like a sore thumb.
Bonus features include audio commentary (mostly by the various directors) on 19 of the 20 episodes, along with photo galleries and one featurette per disc. --Sam Graham

They've lost Their Zing!.......2007-06-08
While all of the Star Gate episodes still feature the original cast with the exception of General Hammond who makes limited appearances, but has been re-assigned, the show seems to have lost some of its zip. Most of the episodes take place on earth, while the ones that are off world are lacking the humor that Jack would have had. Jack is now head of Star Gate Command and rarely goes through the gate. However, I would recommend buying season eight if only as a means to begin to get some closure with the team.
I love the Gate.......2007-05-18

It wasn't until the beginning of <I>Stargate SG-1</I>'s fourth season that fans knew to take the Replicator threat seriously. The spidery nasties had only seemed like one of many new enemies introduced in previous years. But when the one seemingly omnipotent backbone of the galaxy was asking Earth for help, clearly we were in real trouble! In fact, the team's list of enemies expanded and got far more complicated this year. Proving without a shadow of a doubt that this is science fiction, the Russians reveal they have their own Stargate program and ask the Americans for help. This twist allows for exploration of all the political machinations occurring behind the scenes of the SG-C, all of which appear to stem from the embittered Senator Kinsey (Ronny Cox).
There were quite a few Earth-based stories in the year, but not all the new enemies were originally local. Willie Garson comically guest-starred as Martin, a geekily suspicious guy with too much knowledge of the Stargate. More sinister was an old flame of Daniel's turning into something far more painful than an old wound (thanks to an ancient Egyptian curse). Thankfully, the writers hadn't forgotten the importance of one-off storylines too. In "Upgrades" the team learns a lesson in abuse of power. In "The Other Side" (featuring <I>DS9</I>'s Rene Auberjonois) they learn about blind trust. In "Scorched Earth" a dangerous claim for a planet's ownership means they learn to value Daniel's contribution to the group dynamic. If only this last lesson were learned better, season 5 might not have ended up as muddled as it did. <I>--Paul Tonks</I>

Four is the charm!.......2007-06-06
For the first three seasons, Stargate SG-1 was to me a thoroughly watchable and entertaing "also ran" sci-fi show with a very likeable cast and a great premise for space travel that eliminated the need for spaceships, thus allowing humans from today to embark on the kinds of outer space adventure usually reserved for our descendants centuries hence.
But something magic happened in season four! Was it the writing? The special effects budget? The actors getting comfortable in their roles? Maybe a combination, but to me this season is where Stargate SG-1 left the "also ran" space opras behind and began its ascension (pun intended for you fans) to where it stands today as one of the great epic sci-fi TV series that people will be watching decades from now, I hope.
I had just completed watching all the way through season 8 on my own when my wife, who doesn't particularly like sci-fi as a genra, suddenly latched onto this series (another tribute to it's greatness, that non sci-fi fans can enjoy it) and had me watching it again from the first season forward. I promised to filter the episodes for her and make it a "best of Stargate SG-1" kind of thing.
During the first three seasons, I enjoyed re-watching the great episodes that established the goa'old (or gooy-old or whatever, even the Stargate actors themselves can't pronounce it consistently) and introduced us to the Nox and other aliens, but there were a number of episodes in each season we could just skip without missing much, and I didn't particularly care to see them again.
Then came season four! Which ones to skip? They're all, like, really good, and some are brilliant stand alone examples of sci-fi storytelling. And, they started doing commentaries for each episode! So, you could watch them once and then relive them through the eyes of the creators of the show.
Well, I won't go into each episode, but it's season four that contains the episode that officially made me a Stargate SG-1 fan, and that was "Window of Opportunity". This has got to be one of classic episodic sci-fi episodes ever written for any series, kind of like "The Inner Light" was for Star Trek Next Generation. I saw "Window of Opportunity" on TV and thought "Wow, this show has some writers who know what they're doing", and then I started buying the series sets and watching from episode one. The great thing about this episode is not only the Groundhog Day premise, but the sad and thoughtful ending.
Anyway, here's your window of opportunity to watch great sci-fi. Don't be surprised if you end up watching some of them more than once.
One of the Best.......2007-03-09
This is one of the best seasons of Stargate SG1! It has many of the most memorable moments and the special features are entertaining.
Stargate SG1 Season 4.......2007-02-04
Season four is interesting but not as dramatic as some of the other seasons.... the cliffhanger at the end of the season is somewhat similar to the plot of Star trek: voyager..... they did have some interesting guest stars however....
Rene Auberjonois (Star trek: Deep Space 9) makes an appearance he plays the leader of a Nazi like civilization that seeks help from the SGC to eliminate their enemies......
Peter Wingfield (Highlander) has a couple of appearances as a Goa'uld who tries to pretend that he is a member of the Tok'ra.... there is a lot of tension between him and Teal'c....
Very brief moments with Sean Millington (CFL player) for all the Lion fans out there.....
Marina Sirtis (Star Trek: The Next Generation) plays a Russian Scientist that has gotten into trouble with their own stargate.... (that they stole).... dirty russians.....
Stargate SG-1 Season 4.......2007-01-16
It came in mail pretty quickly was a gift for christmas. Very good service.

The 1994 movie <I>Stargate</I> was originally intended as the start of a franchise, but creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin were distracted with <I>Independence Day</I>. Episodic TV treatment was the natural next step. Replacing the roles of Colonel Jack O'Neill (Kurt Russell) and Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader) are, respectively, Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks. They're joined by Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and former alien baddie Teal'c (Christopher Judge) to form the primary unit SG-1. With a seemingly endless network of Stargates found to exist on planets all across the known universe, their mission is to make first contact with as many friendly races as possible. Chasing their heels at almost every turn are the "overlord" pharaonic Goa'uld--the ancient Egyptian gods from the original film. The welcome notion of a continued plot thread sees offshoots that follow the reincarnation of Daniel's wife, Sam's father literally joining a renegade faction of the Goa'uld, and Jack in an unending quest to out-sarcasm everyone. Amid a plethora of derivative look-alikes, <I>Stargate SG-1</I> has held its own with stories that put the science fiction back into TV sci-fi.
Among the second season's 22 episodes, "The Serpent's Lair" concludes the cliffhanger from the end of the first season in a rollercoaster of wit, plot twists, and cutting-edge special effects as the SG-1 team resign themselves to a suicide mission. In the two-parter "The Tok'ra," Sam's estranged father is dying of cancer, but her obligations sway her toward saving a member of the Goa'uld renegade Tok'ra who is also dying. In "Show and Tell," the central story arc takes a dramatic turn when a child arrives to warn that some survivors of a Goa'uld attack are determined to eliminate anyone who might host their enemy--which means Earth as a whole. There's great fun to be had in "1969," with a time-travel plot that loops many aspects of the show's story lines together, and the cliffhanger finale, "Out of Mind," has Jack experience an <I>Aliens</I>-style awakening 79 years into his future. <I>--Paul Tonks</I>

Outstanding.......2007-04-14
I am a sci-fi freak, although I am also a husband and a father so as a result the time I spend in front of the tube is minimal. And since I spend little time watching T.V. what I do watch had better be good, Stargate SG-1 season 1 and 2 have been time well spent!!!!!
Stargate SG1 Season 2.......2007-03-30
This one is a no brainer for the fans of Stargate SG1. It's a must have for all who want the complete series. To some, it may seem booring but the audio commetntary for some of the episodes can be very interesting.
Stargate SG 1.......2007-03-20
Love this series. I have all the seasons. Great to view over and over from the beginning any time I want.
A fine second season.......2007-02-05
The Stargate team soldiers through another season of interstellar adventures. Interesting developments include the introduction of the Tok'ra, the discovery of the Asgard, and a return to the planet Abydos from the original Stargate movie. Clever writing and the continuing development of the Stargate universe with its diverse races and power struggles balance out the weaker episodes.
Great series, great delivery.......2007-01-29
Though I liked the box case presentation better. Much better I would say. This slim case is so not personal. But it looks like we will have to get along with these boxes from now on. nothing to discuss on the discs quality which is flawless

To resolve the season 2 cliffhanger, General Hammond rounds up every conceivable ally to rescue the SG-1 team from Hathor's clutches and gets a much-needed field trip in the process. "Into the Fire " is actually a weak opening for the new year, but does boast some impressive visuals as Hammond and Brat'ac pilot a shuttle through an open Stargate (euphemistically called "threading the needle"). In subsequent episodes, Daniel Jackson is intrigued by the planet Orban's scientific advances over only a few years. An exchange of knowledge is agreed and the precise "Learning Curve" of their children is revealed. Still recalling the original movie, O'Neill is concerned for the siblings because of the loss of his son. In "Demons" some serious lambasting of organized religion occurs in a storyline concerning a medieval Christian village that's being terrorized by a giant Goa'uld servant creature. This episode both brings to light and questions each of the principal characters' beliefs.
"Forever in a Day" begins an important storyline about Daniel's wife Sha're's stolen child who is a "Harcesis," an illegal breeding between Goa'uld hosts. Then an earlier thread is picked up in "Past and Present" on planet Vyus whose people all suffer amnesia. Their leader Ke'ra (played by Megan Leitch who's portrayed Mulder's missing sister in The X-Files) is a link to the earlier "Prisoners" episode and the dangerous "destroyer of worlds". In a two-part cliffhanger, Sam must attempt to rescue her father, face Satan himself on a prison moon, and resurrect "Jolinar's Memories" from the Goa'uld she was briefly possessed by, then "The Devil You Know" reveals an embarrassing secret that could allow the team to escape the clutches of Satanic Sokar. "Pretense" is one of those sci-fi series staples as a character is put on trial to prove their guilt on behalf of another. "Urgo" expands the general sardonic humor with a little pathos for the guest appearance by Dom DeLuise. Lots of slapstick ensues.
"A Hundred Days" is the three months O'Neill spends stranded on planet Edora by the fire rain of a passing asteroid belt. Then in "Shades of Grey" he appears to suffer a total personality switch when he steals technology from the Tollan and is insubordinate in the extreme. Both these are terrific concepts but are scarcely enough story to have stretched across more than one episode. <I>--Paul Tonks</I>

Great Programs.......2007-05-17
I have loved every episode of the Stargate series. They are so exciting to watch.
No Brainer!.......2007-05-15
Yes people... this one is a no brainer if you are a fan of the Stargate SG 1 series. There is only one thing wrong with Season three, as is with all of the early season sets... There is no audio commentary included with each episode. I'm not sure which season they start with but I know that season seven & nine have them along with Stargate Atlantis season one & two.
Stargate Season 3.......2007-02-04
I finished off Stargate SG1: season 3 last week.... that was interesting.... i liked special guest Dom Deluise.... he was showing off his classic acting style.... it also featured the return of Apophis and the introduction of the replicators.....

Stargate SG-1 Season 3 (Thinpak).......2007-01-20
It is surely true that a Sci-Fi movie or an action movie is as good as the villain is bad. There are several of those evildoers in Stargate, but the "badder Santa" of them all is Apophis and he does a great job at being evil, yet arrogant which always plays in favor of the famous hero quadruplet dubbed SG-1.
Most of the episodes of this season will be fun to watch, and among the first four seasons (#1-4) this 3rd one can be perhaps rated as the most entertaining.
Great show, but pointer problems.......2007-01-10
Great show, but some episode links don't work. You need to go into the scene selection to actually play the episode you want.

A gradual shift in overall style, character homecomings and departures, and evolving on- and off-screen roles for the major players are among the attractions of the seventh season of <I>Stargate SG-1</I>. Spread out over five discs, these 21 episodes are ample indication that changes notwithstanding--and admittedly, not all of them are for the better--the series remains arguably the best-made, most compelling sci-fi program on television.
Perhaps most noticeable is the reduced role of star Richard Dean Anderson, who opted to limit his number of trips to Vancouver, where <I>Stargate SG-1</I> is filmed. But that's not a bad thing. The show's ability to poke fun at itself has always been a strong suit, and while Anderson still brings a welcome sense of humor to his portrayal of wiseacre and loose cannon Col. Jack O'Neill, his act is getting a little smug by now. What's more, the other principal cast members have taken up the slack, both behind and in front of the camera: Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson, who rejoins the cast in episode 1) wrote one episode and co-wrote another; Christopher Judge (Teal'c) wrote one as well; Amanda Tapping (Lt. Col. Samatha Carter) directed episode 19, "Resurrection"; and even Corin Nemec (Jonas Quinn, who appears in just a few episodes) contributed one story.
The seventh season also finds the series somewhat more earthbound than in the past; indeed, there are episodes in which the Stargate (the "wormhole" our heroes use to travel to different worlds) doesn't appear at all. On balance, the stories are more personal, and more political--especially the final two, with the newly elected U.S. President (William Devane) struggling to decide the fate of the Stargate program (and, of course, the fate of the entire known universe as well!). And then there's the ultimate villain, Anubis, who makes perennial nemeses the Goa'uld (of which Anubis is one... sort of) look tame. He's a combination of <I>Star Wars</I>' Darth Vader and evil Emperor, but hey, at least these guys borrow from the best.
<I>Stargate SG-1</I>'s production values remain first-rate. The bonus DVD features are also much better than they once were, with audio commentary (mainly by directors and writers) for every episode, as well as director profiles and "Beyond the Gate" featurettes focusing on individual characters. <I>--Sam Graham</I>

The O'Neel.......2007-03-08
Every episode a girl could want of Jack O'Neel doing his thing! Richard Dean Anderson's acting & involvement in this series made it all happen for me. Sam, Daniel, Tielc, Gen Hammond, Dr Fraizer & Jack work together so well, such chemistry. I will sorely miss this cast & series but thank heavens I have the DVD collection.

This series just keeps going and going!
I read a review somewhere that said that Stargate SG-1 "jumped the shark" with the Space Race episode. Now, having just watched the series I can say that nothing can be further from the truth.
Here's what I truly enjoyed about Season 7:
1. Recycled ideas everywhere, but recycled the fun Stargate way. We've got amazon women (Xena: Warrior Princess); a faceless arch villian in black robes with a clone army (Hmmmmm...familiar?); a space ship with shields that degrade by percentages (oh yeah!); jounalists visiting to shoot a documentary (done by Babylon 5 but done at least as well by Stargate SG-1 this season); and government intrigue in high places (sort of like X Files). But it's all well done and fun to watch.
2. Great guest stars who were leading characters on Star Trek Voyager, Enterprise, Firefly, and even the Red Green Show! (No spoilers here for those who haven't watched this season yet.)
3. Several instances of that self-effacing humor that seem so unique to Stargate SG-1.
4. Many episodes that continued stories started by episodes perhaps years in the past. It sure pays to watch this series in chronological order. It's getting like Babylon 5 was, with many stories happening within the overall story. Much attention is payed to continuity, and that isn't lossed on me at all.
5. A beloved character getting killed off. Very sad, but great writing.
Stargate SG-1 season was a very pleasant surprise for me, and I'm starting on season eight right away, maybe tonight!

The biggest change for <I>Stargate SG-1</I>'s sixth season was its move to the Sci-Fi Channel. Financial rescue or genre haven from cancellation? Whatever the behind-the-scenes politics, the departure of Daniel Jackson (actor Michael Shanks) the previous year most certainly contributed to the need to run a tighter ship somewhere. With the addition of his replacement, Jonas Quinn, the new show dynamic (hinted at by the new title theme) meant far more convolutedly involved story arcs and less individual focus. One of very few solo spotlights came from Christopher Judge writing his own show, when "The Changeling" saw Teal'c act out a life as a fireman. One reason for its being a fan favorite was the cameo from still-alive-after-all Daniel Jackson. There'd be several more through the year, culminating in a finale that relied on how much attention you'd been paying to that all-important back-story. Other kooky cameos included Dean Stockwell in one of the many spotlights on the energy resource n'quadria, Ian Buchanan as one of the devilish Replicators (and hopefully the end of that plotline), and regular spots from John DeLancie, Ronny Cox, and Tom McBeath as the Earth-bound series bad guys. More pertinently, we also saw <I>The X-Files</I>' Byers (Bruce Harwood) as a scientist involved with the Antarctic Gate. Lest we forget, there are other portals on Earth. Is that an already planned spin-off on the horizon? <I>--Paul Tonks</I>

Due to my occupation, I might catch one of the episodes on TV one Friday night-but then the next Friday night I'd be at work & didn't want to bother with taping the show... (I'm slowly working on replacing all of the VHS movies I have with DVDs).
Now, I have the entire season on DVD & can watch them when it's convenient for me. No VHS tapes to wear out & the pack takes up quite a bit less space compared to buying the series on videocassette tape.
Another excellent season, only with a number of significant changes.......2006-07-12
The first five seasons of STARGATE SG-1 were notable for their remarkable consistency not only in quality but in style and substance. There was, in fact, little actual variation. But Season Six brought some major changes. First, Michael Shanks took a year off from the show to pursue his own projects, though he did reappear in a few episodes either as Daniel Jackson or as the voice of Thor. Second, Daniel Jackson's place was taken by Corin Nemec as Jonas Quinn, who had appeared in a Season Five episode as a denizen of another planet. Third, for much of the season the show abandoned episodes that involved them exploring new planets. They didn't completely skip visiting other worlds, but they did far less than in previous seasons.
Despite these changes, though certainly not because of them, the show remained steady and solid throughout the season. There were a number of truly superb individual episodes and the show generally maintained the quality that had distinguished it for several seasons. Corin Nemec did the best he could to fill the gap left by the departure of Daniel Jackson. To compensate for his lack of education compared to Daniel, the writers gave him an unusual ability to absorb new knowledge. There were also hints that his physiology was unique in some way that felt as if it would have played a major role in future seasons. Unfortunately (or fortunately, I suppose), the return of Daniel Jackson to the show precluded the need for Jonas, and he was with only a tiny bit of ceremony shipped back to his home planet very early in Season Seven. I personally had mixed feelings about Jonas's presence and departure. He never really meshed with the other characters and never seemed to be a part of the team the way that Daniel had, but on the other hand the way he was so obviously just jettisoned the second he was no longer needed was rather bothersome. As it was, any attentive fan could sense the abandonment of future plot lines.
The absence of Daniel Jackson in Season Six was definitely felt. Daniel functioned as the conscience of SG-1, the unapologetic idealist. He adhered unrelentingly to classic liberal ideals of fairness and justice and was unsparing in his efforts in support of those ideals. Without him, the team sometimes seemed to be without the focus they had had earlier. Not that the show ever flagged in quality or interest. It just felt like a different show. In many ways, the show felt his absence more than it would feel the absence of other characters who left in Seasons 8 and 9. There were many good things in Season Six, but Daniel Jackson's absence defined it as much as the more specific things that happened. The season also increased the number of references to the Ancients, which would lead to major things in subsequent seasons.
No fan of SG-1 would want to miss this season, but it was the harbinger of things to come. Namely, each season from here on out would bring major changes in the show, with at least one major character disappearing in each of the next three seasons. The uniformity of Seasons One through Five would give way to an evolving cast of characters. In a way, one could divide the series into Seasons One-Five and then Six onwards. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, just very different.

It now seems clear that season 5 of <I>Stargate SG-1</I> will be remembered as the one in which something went awry with Daniel Jackson. Lots of behind-the-scenes rumors fueled the idea of cast tension, but whatever the problem, his sudden departure from the show was obviously through a quickly contrived scenario. In retrospect, there must have been a problem for some while before the weird penultimate episode ("Meridian"). Michael Shanks looks frequently bored in his rare moments of individual screen time as he infiltrates a Goa'uld meeting and even when making friends with a creature everyone else wants dead. In fact, there's only one point when everyone really seems to be having fun, and that's in the spoof 100th episode "Wormhole X-treme!"
Most shows go through a run-around, skin-of-their-teeth period awaiting renewal, and it certainly seems to have affected storylines this year. For example, a next generation of younger SG teams is introduced. Replacements? The most unfortunate aspect of things, however, was that not a single episode managed to stand alone on its own merits. Every single story was dependent on a part of the greater interwoven warring-species threads. Some of the one-off tales were terrific in and of themselves, but it was as if the writers fell into the trap of having to refer to as much backstory as possible, perhaps to ensure loose ends could be easily wrapped up? Ultimately none of this mattered since the show went on for quite a while. <I>--Paul Tonks</I>

Stargate SG1 Season 5.......2007-02-04
Season five was good... we find out how the replicators originated and as always there is a new threat that the team has to contend with.... the sadest momemt was in the 2nd to last episode where one of the team members dies....
Peter Wingfield (highlander) returns in "Between two Fires" briefly as he helps wipe out the Tolans for not successfully exterminating the people of earth.
Christina Cox (FX: the series) returns in "the sentinel" to repair a machine that helped protect an alien world from outside threats.... a revelation occurs at the end of the episode.... she is lifted out of prison to help SG1 and given life in prison instead of being in death row....
Corin Nemec (Parker Louis Can't Lose) plays an alien who knows the real truth of the sacrifice that one of the team members made and only tells his people at the very end.... after that he steals some very important minerals from them and gives it to stargate command....

DHL refused to deliver stating that they didn't know which house was mine.
UPS never has a problem. DHL either needs to hire better drivers or get out of the business.

mom of 10.......2007-01-19
My entire family enjoys the stargate series. We find it to be well written, creatively produced, and with very little to no objectional material in it. Col. O'Neill may let the occasional bad word fly but he is never vulgar, and there are never any explicit scenes. Even the bad guys have "class" for the most part. Because of the action/adventure nature of the show there is some violence. The story line is fun to follow and fascinating. It's definitely addicting. It's refreshing to find a series that appeals to both adults and children and yet remains a faithfully clean show.
Still #1.......2007-01-16
If you enjoyed Season 1, you will enjoy this season of SG 1 just as well! The action and storylines are still as creative as you hope them to be. This is a big season for changes...if you are only slightly a fan or are a StarGate regular, you must have this season! Don't be a Shol-vah! Buy it now!

The disks are great and the quality seems fine. I woudl have liked if the packaging remained the same through out the seasons. I purchased the first seven season in the full pack version, thin pak was not available, and then purchased the last two season in thinpak. Its an aesthetic thing but it bugs me.

Through the stargate.......2007-06-14
Most TV shows spun off from movies are uninvolving and uninteresting ("Blade," anyone?), and hopefully die and are forgotten.
That wasn't the case with the spinoff of the 1995 movie "Stargate," an okay science fiction movie that spawned an excellent television series, "Stargate SG-1." The first season is not nearly as brilliant as the ones that followed it, but it's a welcome change from distant space operas -- excellent writing, acting, and a sense of humor about itself and its characters.
The Stargate has been inactive for a year -- until it is activated, and a bunch of Egyptian-styled warriors come through and kidnap a young officer. General Hammond (Don S. Davis) pulls Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) out of retirement to learn what really happened on the planet of Abydos, and where these mysterious aliens have come from.
O'Neill and a small team go to Abydos and find Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) who has been learning about a vast network of Stargates over the past year. But when Daniel's wife Sha're and brother-in-law Skaara are abducted by the same warriors, O'Neill, Jackson and Air Force scientist Sam Carter (Amanda Tapping) use the Stargate to venture to where they're being kept.
What they find is an alien race who inhabits human hosts, the Goa'uld, and their ruthless slave warriors, the Jaffa. Carter, O'Neill and Jackson are captured by the powerful Apophis -- but to escape, they must have the help of an unlikely ally: Teal'c (Christopher Judge), Apophis' First Prime. Since Earth has now annoyed the Goa'uld, several exploration teams are formed to go through the Stargate and find weapons and allies.
And SG-1 -- Carter, O'Neill, Jackson and Teal'c -- encounters some very strange problems: a plague that turns people into savages, a people who live only a hundred days, a Viking planet, a Stargate explorer stranded since 1945, a little girl turned into a bomb, the seductive Goa'uld queen Hathor, and coming back as robots. And when the military shuts down the SG program, Daniel reveals that the Earth is about to be destroyed by Apophis' armies...
The first season of "Stargate SG-1" isn't the most impressive, though the last three episodes hint at the series' future greatness. And thankfully, it drops the usual space opera stuff -- instead we get Stargates, real military, and a very plausible reason why everybody in the galaxy (more or less) looks just like us.
It's graced with kitschy Egyptian-styled sets, lots of shoot-em-up action from Marines and Air Force, and plenty of planets influenced by Earth cultures, like the Minoans and the Vikings. Best of all is the snappy dialogue, mostly from the tart-tongued O'Neill ("Temperature--ground 1700 degrees Fahrenheit. Air--seems to be in pockets, ranging from 1500 degrees down to 200." "Sounds like LA").
And the makers add some poignant and/or warm scenes, such as the eager Abydonian teenagers celebrating with O'Neill and his pals, Teal'c reunion with his outcast family, or Sam bonding with a doomed little girl. All the characters get these moments, which really makes them seem human.
Instead of Kurt Russell's suicidal O'Neill from the movie, Anderson does a quirky, disrespectful, pop culture-lovin' guy with a hidden tragic past -- his "Cold Lazarus"double role is one of the best of the show. Tapping and Shanks are also great, as an enthusiastic geek and a smart, capable military woman. Sadly Judge gets shortchanged as the stern, honorable Teal'c, but he's brilliant when he's spotlighted.
The first season of "Stargate SG-1" is not the best of the series, but it's still a solid, imaginative sci-fi story with some great writing and even better acting. A must-have for sci-fi buffs.

Stargate SG-1 Season 1 (Thinpak)
I thought the movie "Stargate" was inventive, refreshing and exceptionally well done (in a jingoistic sort of way), but I must admit that I was a late comer to the television series. I viewed it as "just another SciFi series" - plus it was on HBO and I refuse to pay for television. My nephew, however, kept prevailing upon me to watch the show. I had convinced him to watch Babylon 5 and he insisted on returning the favor. Still I resisted; Richard Dean Anderson (a perennial favorite with my mother as McGiver) just didn't strike me as the heroic leader type but I had to admit that the original story was intriguing, and Amanda Tapping is oh, so easy on the eyes. So I relented and borrowed his set of Season 1 discs. I am so very pleased that I did.
I am not only impressed with the producers; I greatly admire them for picking up the story where the movie ended. Not only did it provide unheard of continuity but it also demonstrated immense respect for the original concept. And that is the true strength of Stargate SG1. The artists behind the production (actors, directors, designers, technicians, and yes, the suits) all embraced a vision that is both compelling and entertaining. They have embarked on a journey to tell a story of an Earth that might have been. They have explored our mythology in a way that compels us to ask ourselves why we believe what we believe. They have required us to think and that is what elevates Stargate SG1 to the status of ART.
Not every episode is a five-star-affair but the entire story arc crosses into the realm of true literature. The enthusiasm and intensity the cast and crew pour into every episode is abundantly evident, and the dedication of the writing and production staff burns with a white-hot ferocity.
For anyone who is serious about building a world-class Science Fiction collection (and I am) Stargate SG1 is a must-have. To make that job even easier the new Thin-Pack release takes up even less shelf space so there's one less reason to hold off on buying the entire set. I am already up to season 3 and in 7 months I'll have the entire story in the can. It doesn't get any better than this.
Very good buying.......2007-03-09

STARGATE SG-1 SEASON 1 (ThinPack).......2007-02-28
While the content of the episodes is excellent, it is not DD 5.1 and that hurts everything.
Stargate SG-1 Is Great Sci-fi Viewing.......2007-02-17
How can you not like this series if you like Science Fiction? Great characters and just enough special effects to keep techno-junkies happy. This series is not the longest running series still showing (11th season?) and is surpassed only by Dr. Who for most episodes ever. The TV show takes up right where the Theatrical Release Movie ended. Actors are excellent. Once you start this series, you'll get hooked and HAVE to have each season on DVD. Go for the thin-packs for space saving.
Warning - premier episode is rated R, unlike the rest of the shows which are probably PG-13.
