<I>Purgatory</I> is a down-and-dirty Western with a twist <I>The Twilight Zone</I>'s Rod Serling would have loved. A band of 19th-century desperadoes, led by the monstrous Blackjack Britton (Eric Roberts), takes a wrong turn while fleeing a posse and rides into an otherworldly, off-the-map town called Refuge. Sedate, almost repressed, and guarded by an unarmed sheriff (Sam Shepard), Refuge is a weird haven of hospitality with no jail, a literate shopkeeper (J.D. Souther), an erudite dandy of a doctor (Randy Quaid), a restless deputy (Donnie Wahlberg), and a beautiful young woman (Amelia Heinle) with no apparent family. In short order, Blackjack figures Refuge is his for the plundering. But the youngest of his gang, the innocent Sonny (Brad Rowe), slowly realizes the town's residents are, in fact, dead legends of the American West--Wild Bill Hickok (Shepard), Doc Holliday (Quaid), Jesse James (Souther), among others--spending a violence-free interim before being taken to Heaven (or Hell if they fail). A purely fun if slightly hokey piece of fanciful adventure, <I>Purgatory</I>'s colorful cast plays the whole thing straight and gives this made-for-cable film (directed by Uli Edel of <I>Last Exit to Brooklyn</I>) some exciting, six-gun grit and emotional authenticity. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

Between somewhere and nowhere in the untamed West is the small town of Refuge. There, neither the sheriff nor his deputy carry a sidearm. There's no jail either, because shooting, carousing and bad blood are not in the town's character. What peaceful folks live there? Wild Bill Hickok. Doc Holliday. Jesse James. Billy the Kid. All long dead. All mysteriously given a chance to undo their violent pasts in Purgatory. All put to a stern test when Blackjack and his ornery gang ride into town.

5 out of 5 stars All the elements of a great movie.......2007-05-10

I must admit that I was pleasently surprised at the quailty of this movie, which features all the elements that make up a great movie. Starting with an interesting story line, great acting and action sequences, and a number of special moments wonderfully esentuated with moving music.

3 out of 5 stars A good movie for TV.......2007-05-07

It would be hard for me to give this movie more than a three, since it is in the movie category and thus is competing with truly classic westerns such as, The Good the Bad and the Ugly. That being said, it is a good movie when you consider that it was made for TV. An entertaining western which has some great actors and an amusing plot. If I was to compare it to other TV movies, only, then I would say that it rated a strong 4.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewing the movie, " Purgatory.".......2007-03-23

Interesting movie with a bit of Romance.., of course, as in most westerns, the heroes. Wild Bill Hickock, Doc Holiday, Jesse James, and of course, Billy the Kid. And of course the villian, Black Jack...
Very good movie. I've watched it several times already.

Thanks!

4 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Fantasy Western.......2007-01-10

Often when genres combine in unexpected ways the result is less than stellar, but this is not the case with Purgatory. Combining all the drama and bravado of your typical western with a supernatural spin, Purgatory brings together many of the wild west's greatest heroes for one last hurrah. A beautifully imagined and produced piece of cinema highly reminicent of Deadlands: The Weird West, Purgatory is definately worth the price and should be added to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Just Unbelievably Awesome!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-20

I ordered this movie and it came within a just a week. I love it. I culd watch it over and over again becuz i've been searching everywhere 4 this movie dying 2 c it again; I remember the movie from when it came on CBS back in '99 or 'oo. Tina Andrews did her research well and I love the way Sally Hemings was protrayed in the film. She's beautiful (thanks to Carmen Ejogo) and intelligent as well as feirce and kind at the same time. She's quite confident of herself. I also liked the way Jefferson was portrayed. It's almost completely believable to me-it's nice 2 hav an imagination. The other acters like, Diahann C., Mario V.P., Mare W., Amelia H., and Klea S. are great as well. I wish it culd hav gone into detail about her mother's, Betty, life and her Sally's two youngest sons, Eston and Madison. If you're interested in good entertainment of or the scandal of the U.s. 3rd president, you shuld seriously consider viewing this movie. I really like it and I am sooo glad I own it.

5 out of 5 stars Sally Hemings: Excellent Story Told of Love, Betrayal and Oppression.......2007-03-08

This movie was excellent. It was much better than the version that came out in the early '90's. If you love period films than you will definitely love this historical piece. This is the perfect example of people caught between privilege and oppression. Excellent!!!

1 out of 5 stars Godawful.......2007-02-27

Just terrible. Makes claims that not even the most ardent Sally Hemings promoter believes. Turns Sally's brother James into some sort of martyr to the cause of political correctness. Has Jefferson (atrociously played by the completely out-of-place Sam Neill) traipsing around with Sally Hemings in public in a completely unrealistic way. Given the almost certain fact that Jefferson really did have children with Sally Hemings, this premise might have made an interesting and insightful movie. Instead, the producers used it as an excuse for creating a complete historical romance fantasy that tries at the same time to be titillating and preachy, and maybe it succeeds--but at the cost of any degree of historical accuracy. If you want a movie about Jefferson, get the much less awful Jefferson in Paris, which at least has beautiful production values and nice music.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT LOVE STORY!!!.......2007-01-09

I bought this dvd as a gift for my mother and she loves this movie. If you love romantic love stories, this is a good buy to witness a great love affair that happened between President Jefferson and Sally Hemings. I have seen this movie more than once; and everytime it is a joy to watch.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2006-11-23

This movie was a masterpiece it really dipicted Sally Heming's life from just being an ordinary quadroon slave then to become the concubine to President Thomas Jefferson.

Steven Soderbergh's follow-up to his sexy thriller <I>Out of Sight</I> is an equally stylish but far more austere crime drama, a work of memory that mixes flashbacks, flashforwards, and ruminations on the present into an invigorating cinematic quilt. Terence Stamp is Wilson, an aging cockney criminal fresh out of prison who flies to Los Angeles to search for his daughter's killer. She died in a car wreck, but he suspects that her lover, a music industry mogul named Valentine (Peter Fonda), knows more than he's telling. Wilson is a fish out of water indeed, a cool, cruel London thug on the airy, sun-bright street of L.A., a silver-haired criminal taking on street punks and hit men with the relentless drive of a man possessed. It's like <I>Get Carter</I> channeled through <I>Point Blank</I>, a hard-edged revenge thriller steeped in sorrow and regret, trading the warmth of <I>Out of Sight</I>'s romantic heat for a more contemplative remove. Fonda beautifully plays off his cinematic history of 1960s hippies and rebels as a nervous, cowardly millionaire sellout in white cotton peasant shirts and a deep California tan. Luiz Guzman and Lesley Ann Warren costar as Wilson's "adopted" guides through modern L.A., and Barry Newman is excellent as Valentine's tough, terse head of security, another aging pro blindsided by Wilson's relentless single-mindedness. Soderbergh quotes from Ken Loach's 1967 film <I>Poor Cow</I> (sadly not available on video in the U.S.) for Wilson's flashbacks as a fresh-faced teenage thug. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

Description

British ex-con Wilson (Terence Stamp) arrives in Los Angeles to investigate the mystery of his daughter's "accidental" death. His prime suspect, the wealthy, heavily guarded, music promoter Terry Valentine (Peter Fonda), is no easy target. Propelled into an increasingly brutal search for truth, Wilson, with single-mindedness and terrifying precision, moves unstoppably toward revenge.

3 out of 5 stars A celebrated film worth one viewing but not much more.......2007-04-23

The Limey is celebrated as the film that gave Terence Stamp a starring role and as director Steven Soderbergh's last independent hurrah before winning the Academy Award with Traffic. It's a revenge drama (an ex-con heads out to Los Angeles to avenge the murder of his daughter) told in flashbacks and flashforwards. I've read dozens of reviews on Amazon and on the Amazon-owned movie database website, and I was surprised to notice how often the analogy of a deck of cards was employed in descriptions of the movie. Fans celebrate the film for its agile flipping through a deck of cards, for the fluidity of time in the storyline.

I'm a dissenting voice, and no, I didn't not like the movie because I'm not "film-savvy." It is a beautiful Los Angeles piece which portrays the seedy underside and self-centered social climbing of the city of glitter. Henry Fonda, Terence Stamp, Luis Guzman, and the supporting cast are all excellent. The plot is simple and weak, and the jumbling of time does not make up for what the plot is lacking, The dialog is flat. The viewer is distracted by the camera angles and the use of music which swells over the dialog.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this film.......2006-05-02

I bought this cheap off amazon or ebay and was very happy to see it. I wish I had seen it on the big screen but those are days gone by. Peter Fonda was good in this movie as was the whole cast. Terence Stamp is outstanding and I like the way he talks. This movie plesantly suprised me.

5 out of 5 stars SODERBERGH'S FINAL INDIE HOORAH.......2005-10-06

This was STEVEN SODERGBERGH'S last Indie Hoorah before he becam the OSCAR winning director of TRAFFIC. I absolutley love this movie. TERRENCE STAMP gives on of the best performances of his movie career as WILSON a career criminal who comes to AMERICA to avenge his dead daughter. The entire cast is exellent, and I love the editing trick (particularly splicing in clips from STAMP'S first movie, POOR COW, in flashback scenes). PETER FONDA is just as great as VALENTINE the sleazy record producer. This is a definate must see for film buffs.

5 out of 5 stars The push that Soderbergh needed towards greatness.......2005-09-25

I will not pretend this is not my favorite American film ever, it is. I first saw this in the initial theatrical release in 1999. This is the film that made me change my major from marketing to film, and change my goals in business, and life. Now that's an impact on at least one viewer. :-) This is also the film, that I believe pushed Director Steven Soderbergh over the cusp of greatness. Already with an impressive body of work in "Sex, Lies, and Videotape", "Gray's Anatomy", and the outstanding thriller "Out of Sight", here the director applies the sum of his education, and gives you the the single most innovative revenge/crime thriller in American film.

I will touch on the plot briefly as far better writers than I already have well covered it dozens of times over. Terrance Stamp portrays career con Wilson, a cockney Brit who travels to L.A. upon his release to get answers concerning the suspicious "accidental" death of his estranged daughter. Upon arriving he makes contact with his daughters friend Eduardo, wonderfully portrayed by the usually underutilized Luis Guzman, and, voice/acting coach played by Lesley Ann Warren. After cutting through some henchman types who had recently come in contact with Wilson's child, his path of revenge leads to aging 60's icon, record producer Terry Valentine. Valentine is portrayed by the legendary Peter Fonda, who is at his most animated, and sleazy best as the cowardly Valentine.

Everybody in this film is absolutly terrific which is typical of a Soderbergh cast who seems to just bring the best out of a cast like nobody else. One cast member who gets no notice in any of the reviews I have seen is Melissa George who in haunting flashbacks, and Wilson's imagination portrays his daughter Jenny. I cannot give this young lady enough credit for giving such a revealing face to a character only seen in memory, with no voice, with no dialouge. She is beautiful, meloncholy, and unforgettable and manages without ever speaking to give somekind of voice to the voiceless along with another young actress named Michela Gallo who does duties as the young child of Wilson's memories.

The direction of Sodergergh, and most importantly his cutting of the film alongside editor Sarah Flack is imaginitive, and daring. The cut is as chaotic as the memories of a faded conman, who time passed by so long ago would be, yet the direction of this cut is nothing short of masterful. Much like the era the antagonist/protagonist saw thier heyday in, Soderbergh weaves the surreal, with the very real, advances the story, and studies his "hero" in ways that I had never imagined before seeing "The Limey". This film could not have been made without Stamp, and Soderbergh has said as much before. The icon easily outperformed any and every actor in 1999, and got nothing in the way of nominations for this achievement, which I still think a travesty. This is a film with excellent dialouge, but never relies on dialouge to explain, or advance, or develop. The breadth of Wilson's development in our eyes is done for just that, our eyes. Stamp's face, his eyes, his mouth, his body language tell us all we ever need to know. It seems that everybody looks at this as a crime thriller, but really this is human drama, and character study at it's finest.

I've followed Soderbergh for many years, and this was a really fun step in his progession to the director who will soon be tackling Che Guavera in an epic that I had onced hoped to make. But I won't hold it against him :-)

If you want a great work, that you will watch again, and again....go to the top of the page and order this gem.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it , great to see Terence Stamp starring again .......2005-08-21

This film owes so much to the wonderfully intense performance of Terence Stamp . I don't know why he doesn't get more work . Only now after seeing a film like POINT BLANK do I notice the original influence . This is a revenge film but you cannot wait to see how it happens .

The film has an 'arty non linear' storytelling style , but is easy to follow . The film is set in sunny California , which seems to make things more sinister somehow .
I recommend this film and also another one like it , but set in 70's England called GET CARTER , which stars Michael Caine .
Both DVD's have good special features , which include the lead actors speaking in the commentaries .

For the price , you cannot go wrong .
You may find it hard to believe the same director that made this was behind the remake of OCEAN'S ELEVEN , but it's true .
If you like it , do pick up the POINT BLANK DVD as well .

Description

Christopher Lloyd stars as Quicksilver, a delightful collector of oddities. After a newlywed couple's car breaks down, the husband goes off for help. Along comes Quicksilver in his Rolls Royce, offering the fearsome bride refuge. He then tells her a story of a traveling salesman who stops at a rustic little diner and is given a set of "chattering teeth" as a birthday present. He picks up a hitchhiker and trouble follows. In the second story, Matt Frewer plays a petty pickpocket who meets Lloyd in his house of oddities and is todl the story of a plastic surgeon whose hands stage a revolt against him for their independence.

After having read dozens of King and Barker novels and seen a gazillion horror flicks in my life, you can trust me when I say to you that this is the silliest and most boring thing I've seen in a decade.

This movie, hell it's not even worth being called that, can't even scare your 5-year-old, believe me. In my personal opinion, Mick Garris and Chris Lloyd have had their days and should part from the silver screen forever..

5 out of 5 stars Protective Toys and Hands with Minds of their Own.......2006-08-10

Enthusiastically given 5 stars. The stories are well done. And seeing the cameos by Clive Barker, Mick Garris's wife and John Landis was fun. Good production, good actors, good editing. If you like creepy but without the blood and guts, this would be a good place to start.

3 out of 5 stars Killer novelty teeth and jimmy hands..........2005-07-13

I've always enjoyed a good horror anthology movie (although I'm not sure after watching this film it actually fits in that category), some of my favorites being (in no particular order) Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965), The House That Dripped Blood (1970), Tales from the Crypt (1972), Asylum (1972), The Vault of Horror (1973), and Creepshow (1982), so, when I Quicksilver Highway (1997) appeared on my radar, I was naturally curious...a curiosity that wasn't necessarily rewarded as I got around to watching it last night...this made for TV feature is based on two short stories, one titled `Chattery Teeth' by Stephen King, and another titled `The Body Politic' by Clive Barker, both well known authors in the field of horror literature. Adapted and directed by Mick Garris (Critters 2: The Main Course, Sleepwalkers), the film stars Christopher Lloyd (The Addams Family) and Matt Frewer (Max Headroom). Also appearing is Raphael Sbarge (Risky Business, My Science Project), Missy Crider (Gigli), Silas Weir Mitchell (The Whole Ten Yards), Bill Nunn (Spider-Man 2), Veronica Cartwright (Alien, The Right Stuff), and Cynthia Garris, who just happens to be married to the director and all of her credits happen to be productions her husband directed...whatever...

The film begins on a lonely desert highway where we see a recently married young couple stranded due to a flat tire and an even flatter spare...the knuckleheaded husband decides the only thing to do is to leave his wife, who's pregnant by the way, at the car and go off in seek of help, but not in the direction they came from (which would seem the logical choice, since one would know what was behind), but forward, into the unknown...anyway, while the woman waits nervously, aide appears in the form of a Rolls Royce with motor home (with a Victorian interior) in tow, driven by a weirdo named Aaron Quicksilver (Lloyd), who offers the safety of his company while waiting for the husband to return. He describes himself as a traveler and a collector of interesting stories and facts, to which he proceeds to relate a particularly stupid tale about a traveling salesman, a sinister hitchhiker (aren't they all), and a pair of murderous, oversized, chattering, novelty teeth (seriously). After this we switch to scenes of a carnival and we're witnessing a pickpocket on his rounds, ducking into an exhibition called `Exposition of Delightful Horrors' in hopes of eluding the police. Guess who happens to be running the exhibition? Aaron Quicksilver...who then begins to tell a tale of a successful cosmetic surgeon (Frewer) suffering from a severe case of the `jimmy' hands, in other words, his hands begin acting of their own accord, and even to the point where they begin plotting a revolt...a `digital revolution', if you will...

Okay, I'm not really sure what kind of look they were going for when they made Christopher Lloyd up the way they did, but he comes off like some unholy hybrid of Liza Minnelli and Carol Burnett...which is pretty creepy (in a sleazy sort of way), but really didn't put me in the mood for receiving tales of terror (of which there are none here, by the way)...and I love the fact that the only people Lloyd's character could get to listen to his particularly lame stories are those who were essentially trapped into doing so...you see, the newly married woman got stuck with him because night was falling and the coyotes began howling, while the thief was forced into Quicksilver's company to avoid being arrested...and both of these people asked virtually the same question after the end of each tale in that of `Is their any point to your story?' So essentially what you have is a cross-dressing, psuedo-metaphilosophical, freaky deaky traveling around the back roads of America in a Victoria style motor home telling pointless stories to people whose only other choices beyond listening to said stories are incarceration or death? Great premise for a film...as far as the movie itself, the production values were decent, the actors professional (I hope Lloyd got paid really well for having present himself in such a manner), the direction capable, the music exceptional (composed by Mark Mothersbaugh) with the main weakness being in the material. This just served to confirm my ardent belief that not every bit of literature necessarily deserves to be turned into a movie or TV show, even if they're based on material written by the likes of Clive Barker or Stephen King. I haven't read either of the stories these adaptations are based on, so I couldn't tell you if this was a case of weak source material or just a rather lame adaptation. Did Stephen King really write a story about a pair of chattering novelty teeth coming alive and biting people to death? Perhaps the once deep waters of inspiration have since suffered a drought...maybe it was from his Bachman days...as far as the Barker story, I'm sure it came across much better on paper than it did on screen. There were some comical moments, specifically with regards to the hands `communicating' with each, talking about freedom and revolution in high pitched voices sound a lot like those little Brownie characters from the George Lucas/Ron Howard film Willow (1988). One aspect that did creep me out a little was the fact the director had his wife Cynthia cast in the 2nd story, as the surgeon's wife, specifically the scenes when her character and Frewer's began making out, all while her husband was behind the camera giving direction...so he got paid to film his wife, who is also got paid, making out with another man? That's beautiful...I know, I know...actors and directors are supposed to be professionals, but still, wouldn't you feel the least bit off watching your spouse getting it on with another?

The original full screen format (it was a made for TV movie, remember?) looks very sharp and clean, and the audio comes through clearly. There are actually some special features including a recent interview with Matt Frewer (9:32) where he talks about his experiences filming his piece, tending to get a bit gushy about director Mick Garris probably because Garris continues to help keep him employed by putting him in other King televised and big screen adaptations like Riding the Bullet (2004) and "Desperation" (2005). Also included is a commentary track with director Garris and his wife/actress Cynthia Garris, who happened to be in the film for all of about 10 minutes so I'm sure she'll have a lot to offer...she is really hot, though, but that's not really something that'd come through on a commentary track. Along with these features, there's also a trailer, a storyboard gallery, and a teleplay, which is on the DVD-ROM portion of the DVD.

1 out of 5 stars Viva la piece of crap........2005-07-13

Lesson learned don't go to the video store without your glasses. Love Clive Barker, and usually don't mind Stephen King, but this looks like it could have been a pilot for a Night Gallery wannabee series that (thankfully) never made it to air. What do you get when you have a pregnant bride stranded in the desert, a pseudo leather queen in a bad wig, killer chattering teeth, and body parts that yearn to be emancipated. Not Funny, not scary, Just plain dumb. The only good thing I found was, Matt Frewer plays his part well even though the material just didn't work on film.

2 out of 5 stars Irony? Horror?.......2005-04-26

Oh man, what a bad movie. But then, what exactly did they want with that movie from the beginning? It's pretty entertaining and reminded more of the Twilight zone stories but both stories and the stuff in between is light years away from the standart of both story tellers. I know 'the body politics' by Barker from the book 'inhuman conditions' in which much much better stories could've been taken into this short story movie.

When all the separated neighbours' hands have a meeting on the rooftop (they're planning rebellion against the bodies, trying to convince other hands to get 'independant' by cutting themselves off the arms and enjoy freedom) at the climax of the second story, the protagonist decides to fake the hands and become their leader only to make them follow him when he jumps. Add some cartoon voices going "wheeeeawhoooo" (the screaming hands)... this movie has to be a joke. A funny twilight zone episode. A bad one.

1 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE movie.......2006-08-28

This movie was mis-represented and falsely advertised. Many people have read the book "Liar's Poker" and it is likely that those same people have seen the Movie "Wall Street"...When i went to check out as i was purchasing Wall Street, Amazon suggested i might like the "Liars Poker" movie as well, basically attempting to play on the likelihood that i read the Liars Poker book. However, when i watched Liarts Poker movie, it was terrible and had ZERO relation to the book. For the first time, i am COMPLETELY unsatisfied with Amazon, more specifically, the marketing team which i've come to rely on.

4 out of 5 stars SERIOUS EFFORT BRINGS ITS REWARDS........2005-10-06

This is an interesting crime film by freshman director Jeff Santo. The narrative is of less importance than the technique, which involves pace-related risktaking. Expressionism is nicely developed here, with the manner in which time is handled being consistent with the script. The slowness of the scenes might be offputting to some, but a directorial point of view is established and well-met. The acting, particularly by Heinle, Hunter and Blondell, maintains the author's focus on style. There are some red herrings, but not enough to mar this little-known attempt at creative cinema.

3 out of 5 stars DUMB PEOPLE DOING DUMB THINGS AGAIN.......2004-07-16

It's hard to believe that the man who wrote the screenplays for THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and THE GREEN MILE penned this overblown action movie. Frank Darabont's screenplay focuses on one Johnny Dell Grissom, a handsome young race driver, who has been saving his winnings so he could go to college and make something of his life. His father is an ex-con who runs a gas station and he's in love with the daughter of the local redneck sheriff, who doesn't want his Sarah Jane to have anything to do with his youngun. Sarah Jane is also desired by the sheriff's even redder deputy, Norm. As the movie opens, however, we meet a bunch of really vile prisoners who murder their guards and escape. Lo and behold, they run into the sheriff, kill him right in front of his daughter's eyes, but who gets the blame? Johnny, of course. From hereon, it's a chase movie, with some exciting chase scenes, but nothing new. All the main characters do dumb things that even make their actions dumber. Johnny and Norm for the most part. Patrick Muldoon brings his stoic, boyish charm to the role of Johnny, but it's not his most rewarding role; Amelia Heinle (Earth vs. the Spider) is credible as the kidnapped Sarah Jane; Jake Busey overplays Norm to the point of incredulity; Peter Greene as the nasty head villain is very good in his icy role; Kevin J. O'Connor reprises his whiny geek role he mastered in The Mummy; and Jeffrey DeMunn gives a good performance as Johnny's dad.
D.J. Caruso's direction is inconsistent; the pace slows; picks up; slows down again; it doesn't help this average movie.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Action and Drama Film.......2001-02-03

If you like action as well as drama, you will love this film. I was amazed at the camera angles in the action scenes. This film was made for HBO, and so most films of this nature do not have the budget to do all the necessary action scenes to potential. However, this one did. The main character in the film is a race car driver. After a prison break, the felons along with the girlfriend of one of them, run for their lives.

I especially loved the fact that the girlfriend was not only pursued by her boyfriend, but also by one of the cops hunting the convicts. He has a great attraction for her, and if she would just be his, his life would be grand. This subplot joins all the other subplots to make a film you will enjoy, especially if you watch it at night.

I was impressed by the amount of explosions in this movie. There were not too many, just enough. This movie reminded me of James Bond films, with a touch of small town sheriffs and maybe some Bonnie and Clyde mixed in.

I know you will love this film, and the only thing I didn't like about it is when I watching I had no sense of time. I thought it had only been on for 30 minutes when it was over. Looked at the clock, and it had been almost 2 hours.

There were a few slow moments in the film, but that was to be expected, considering almost every film today has slow moments. Those did not distract, and I barely noticed them. As soon as I did, something juicy would happen in the film.

You won't go wrong with this one.

2 out of 5 stars Action? ... Where?.......2000-10-06

I caught the first 70 minutes of this lame so-called "action" flick on late-night TV. The reason I sat down to watch was the high-paced scene near the beginning of the film where four prisoners escape from a work crew and drive off in a stolen car. "What the heck," I thought. "It shows promise." Then, when the movie had reeled me in, it subjected me to the longest 30-minute wait of my life.

NOTHING happens for half an hour. NOTHING. The protagonist, a race-car driver, is introduced, along with his girlfriend (who becomes a hostage), the competing love interest (a small-town cop), and several bit characters who basically disappear from the film once the action gets going. It's like the film-maker fell asleep. When you've just seen someone get shot through the stomach in slow motion within the first five minutes of the film, that sets the pace for what you expect ... and the movie shatters that expectation completely by subjecting you to the soap-opera lives of the Del Grissoms and their hick-town neighbors.

The film picks up again near the end, but it's too little, too late. The movie would have benefited greatly from some serious editing: build more suspense in the first half, and add more plot advancement to the second half, instead of taking them one at a time and completely switching gears halfway through.

5 out of 5 stars No other explanation except, AWESOME!.......2000-01-11

This is a must see! I can't even put it into words. I watched it at 4:00 in the morning, and I was so into it that I never felt more awake that early in the morning before. It is a must see. It was actually unpredictable. Do not hesitate to order this movie any longer.

5 out of 5 stars Great little action movie with a lot of bang!.......1999-07-07

Small budgeted HBO action film with a sexy cast and great explosions. Well directed with innovative camera angles, especially in the action scenes. Better than most studio action flicks.

John Huddles tries hard to charm audiences with his modest little American indie comedy about a kooky British clan on a sprawling northern California estate. Rufus Sewell is the would-be family entrepreneur on a financial losing streak ready to sink the last of his fortune on a failed manganese mine. His girlfriend (Minnie Driver) can't talk him out of the doomed venture and his brother is busy getting back to nature, so eccentric uncle Nigel Hawthorne climbs down from his spiritual cloud to knock some sense into his nephew: "His karma was constipated. I gave him an enema." Executive producers Driver and Hawthorne were surely drawn to the sweetly offbeat characters and hopeful message of healing in the script, but Huddles's stylistic gymnastics distract from the comedy's gentle pace and simple tone, and even these engaging performers can't buoy the film through the phony contrivances of the feel-good finale. The film has previously been released under the names <I>At Sachem Farm</I> and <I>Higher Love</I>. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

1 out of 5 stars Uncorked.......2004-09-13

Despite the fact that I am a HUGE Rufus Sewell fan - this film was atrocious. The plot revolves around an oddball family of slackers who never held "real jobs". Nephew Ross constantly complians that his old uncle Cullen was a spoiled trust fund kid who lived off family money. But Nephew Ross also never was able to hold a "real job" and repeatedly loss huge sums of money in hare-brained investments. So what is the point?

The film is racist against Asians. There are approximately 15 Asian actors in this film and none of them ever speak - just state mutely into space without any dialogue. The only Asian actor that speaks, Mr. Tang does a cornball, hoky song on the guitar and behaves like a buffoon.

Inane, slowly paced plot with stilted dialogue. The most annoying thing about this film is 30% of it is shots of the actors without any dialogue just staring into space, or gazing at other actors without any dialogue, far too many very long shots of scenery, buildings and landscapes....none of those VERY LONG shots do absolutely nothing to advance the plot or build character development.

Rufus Sewell, Minnie Driver and Nigel Davenport are all highly respected actors - but the script is boring, direction is weak and the film just plods along. The entire supporting cast are untalented unknowns who were probably cast in their roles because they would work for union scale.

The only reason to purchase this film is if you are a big Rufus Sewell fan and just enjoy watching him in a bad film for his gorgeous, hunky "eye-candy" appeal. Sewell does an admirable job trying to elevate this insipid film, but even his world class acting skills cannot do much for "Uncorked". In order to make this film bearable, I simply fast-forwarded skipping all the scenes that did not have Rufus Sewell. The sound track is lovely - Rufus Sewell and the sound track are the only thing that makes it bearable to watch.

This is a "straight to video" type film that gets pulled from first run theaters after the first weekend and goes straight to cable.

5 out of 5 stars A Work of Art.......2004-01-29

"And what are you going to be when you grow up?" We have all been asked this at some point. Those of us who forgot the answer live unhappy lives. Those who reminisce, live but are not happy. To those who are happy, the answer is not a memory but a way of life.

Uncorked takes a charming and witty glimpse into the soul of a confused young man whose life is going in every direction, with little success or joy. A seemingly haphazard compilation of events unites seamlessly and stops him in his tracks. He learns to face reality, not his versions of it. He realizes that happiness is not some ephemeral state, more mythic than real, but the direct and attainable result of a purposeful existence.

Uncorked has achieved that illusive state of complex simplicity. Nothing in it is superfluous. Every element enhances the theme, be it the script, photography, music. Most rewarding of all, this story is a light one. You need not cringe at the prospect of viewing it. It will not depress you; it will uplift. It will not tire you; it will rejuvenate. It will make you laugh just as you begin to cry. It is a work of art!

5 out of 5 stars A quirky funny vintage with lots of perspective.......2003-12-31

Ross (Rufus Sewell) is about to make a fortune. He plans to sell all the collected bottles of wine bequeathed to him by his Uncle Cullen, the proceeds of which he will use to buy a manganese mine three miles west of the many-acre Satchem Farm they own. He will become financially solvent, and will be able to marry his girlfriend Kendal, who arrives on the farm with a quiet but pretty friend, Laurie, whom Cullen describes as "the girl with the young eyes but old soul." Laurie's quiet, reserved, very pretty, and has a very nice smile.

The title action occurs, thanks to Uncle Cullen, and deliberately it seems, and that appears to be the end of Ross's dream to get somewhere in life, as home insurance does not cover senility. Ross feels the need to be responsible, as his hermit-like brother Paul lives in the arboretum, planting trees with a bunch of H'mong, a peaceful arboreal people hailing from Laos.

Kendal has been patient, loving, and exasperated with Ross, but she's more a clear, organized person who thinks Ross should get his priorities straight. She does sympathize with him though, telling Laurie that everything Ross does is "like a perversion of the law of physics. The harder he works, the less he gets out of it."

Everybody thinks Cullen has gone around the bend when he has a twenty cubit high (about twenty-eight feet) Greek pillar made of titanium and plexiglass installed in the yard overlooking the woods, and in one of the movie's highlights, proceeds to perch himself atop it a la St. Simeon, who did so in the fifth century as an ascetic practice of achieving enlightenment. Well, everybody except Laurie. He spends the second half of the film on that perch.

However, Cullen is far from senile. As he tells Kendal, "life has a long experience of suffering, disappointments, and chaos, but the moment you stop squirming against the catastrophe of being alive, music flies out of the dog doo." But his most important pearls of wisdom are for his nephew, whom he wants to learn what he was put on earth for. What are his special gifts? To this, he enlists the aid of Laurie and Kendal.

Other characters include Tom, a former Olympic contender whose career ended when he tripped on his shoelace and broke his ankle. He spends his days diving, his interface to the real world thus severed, and barely says a word, especially to his former flame Kendal, who turned to Ross when Tom cut off communication with her.

The best performance and lines comes from Nigel Hawthorne (Cullen) hands down, playing an eccentric, idealistic, and ultimately cleverly strategic old man who's got a lot of perspective in life. As Kendal tells him, "Satchem Farm ...is a growing collection of hermetically sealed neurotics and the not so funny part is the common denominator is you." Such a far cry from the devious Sir Humphrey Appleby in Yes Minister and Yes, Prime Minister. He delivers the funniest line regarding a character: "His karma was constipated. I gave him an enema."

Laurie is played by Amelia Heinle, who bears a strong resemblance to Denise Richards. Her quiet, reserved manner, warm and compassionate smile really make Cullen's description of her as the girl with "young eyes with an old soul" appropriate. It's her quiet but potent presence and role that makes her outshine Minnie Driver (Kendal), who herself is good in this movie.

Keone Yong (Harrison Tang, the wine dealer) has an amusing moment where he plays guitar and sings a funny song in Chinese. His performance either bemuses or dumbfounds his listeners. Michael A Rodgers stands out as Paul, the arboreal hermit brother of Ross.

As Ross says in an onscreen narration, it's "so easy to lose perspective on life. It's also not hard as you think to get your perspective back." And this quirky film with its oddballs is a ticklish but heartwarming vintage.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!!.......2003-10-01

A friend recommended this movie to me, said to take it with a grain of salt. Not your typical Hollywood movie. I love it and watch it all the time. I never get tired of it. It is wonderful and rich, funny and touching. Nothing offensive or of questionable values in the movie. Wouldn't ever be embarrased watching it with your kids, or anyone else. Great movie.

5 out of 5 stars Sitting Still.......2003-09-11

"The world needs more people capable of just sitting still!" This movie has charm, wit, and best of all depth. The characters are well developed. Sometimes what we are searching for is right under our feet. Give this movie a try. I had to watch it a couple of times to really love it. Try it with the captions to get all the dialogue. The music is gorgeous as well.

4 out of 5 stars Quentin vs Not So Tough Cop.......2006-03-10

Quentin works as a security guard at a scientific research facility. But Quentin dreams of more. He wants to be more like the heroes in the comics he reads, particularly the Arachnid Avenger. The lab he works at just happens to be working with spiders. When unknown assailants break into the facility, Quentin allows himself to be injected with a spider serum.

Soon Quentin's life changes. He is stronger and more confident. He seems to be making inroads with the attractive woman next door. But the changes don't stop there. He begins to become monstrous but manages to hold onto a small level of control. Dan Aykroyd plays a cop who has lost his nerve. As he watches his wife fool around he tries to track the mysterious hero.

This was interesting. Flashes of comic books lent to the feel of the film but Quentin and the comic store guy seemed a little childish. The other guard's sympathy for the spider test subjects was also a little odd but it did seem to all fit together. There was of course a clip from the original (still a classic) and some good acting from Aykroyd. All in all it was a pretty fun little film that would appeal to monster and superhero fans.

1 out of 5 stars Almost unwatchable.......2004-08-22

I regret buying this one, I couldn't even finish watching it. If you are intrigued by the positive reviews, rent don't buy!

3 out of 5 stars the best spider man rip off of all time.......2004-07-09

this is a spider man rip off but with a far darker tone.dan akroyd plays a serious cop whose trying to get his man.he doesnt do very well and should stick to comedy.kids will get scared.all the money was devoted to the monster in this one and not anything else.the monster is a geek who is enduring a really slow metamorphisis into a man sized spider.its the best spider man rip offive ever seen.there are some parts with nasty spider stuff,so the queasy should look away.there are no hot chicks just some priss the geek pines over all the time.it will probably get a bad rap,but its good.this is the best dan akroyd film but thats because all hisfilms suck.the man spider guy is really neat.id even watch a sequel.

2 out of 5 stars Nerds, spiders, and noir setting! Oh My!.......2004-07-05

I'm a fan of B-style movies. So when I heard of the new Creature Feature series, I thought this series would be fun! Well, I found "Earth Versus the Spider" to be merely average, with occasional touches of greatness.

When nerdy security guard Quentin's partner is killed by thugs, Quentin takes matters into his own hands by injecting himself with a mysterious 'spider' juice, which temporarily gives him really cool powers. Unfortunately, the side affects are monstrous- quite literally, thus begins a "Jekyll and Hyde" story for the modern age.

Pro's: I liked the film 'noir' setting. The cool costumes, and the acting.

Cons: I just didn't like the Quentin character. Perhaps if he'd been a more likeable guy, I would've felt sorry for him. As it was, he was just a little too weird and a little too nerdy for me to care what happened to him. Plus, despite the comic book interest he wasn't nerdy enough.

I much prefer "She Creature" another title in this series..

5 out of 5 stars Classic horror.......2004-05-22

Good ol'fashioned horror. About a bit of a loner reclusive type guy and discovers a way to become the opposite of what he is and his fantasy of becoming a superhero but something terribly goes wrong. Well done flick. Has its gross moments but never over the top. Worth adding to your horror collection if you have one.

5 out of 5 stars I loved Sam Neill in this movie.......2006-05-08

This movie should be understood more as a historical love story more than an attack on TJ's charactor. While we will never know the whole truth about his relationship with Sally Hemmings, I think this movie treated it well-- as a true love affair, and as Jefferson maturing over time.

5 out of 5 stars one of a kind.......2002-05-19

I found the movie both enlighting and puzzling. First of all we will never truely know what kind of love Sally and thomas really shared. Things that are written could have been fiction yet some may be true but we will never know the truth. I like the way the movie portrays thomas jefferson as a true mans, man and also showed the love that he had for his children.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Movie.......2001-08-26

This movie dares to suggest that Thomas Jefferson might have loved his slave Sally Hemings. No one will ever know for sure if he loved her but if they had a relationship it would have lasted close to forty years. Can a man have a relationship with a woman for forty years and feel nothing for her, even if she was his slave and a black woman? Some people would suggest that but not this movie. Jefferson himself was a contradiction. He said slavery was wrong, yet he owned slaves. This movie focuses on the kind of relationship they may have had and the people they were. Sally is portrayed as a strong and educated woman. We know she went to France and she could have been educated while she was there.
