Pretender Movies.......2007-06-12
It is great to finally have the whole Pretender series on video, however I still wish they could have finished up series, even with another movie or two.
Sorry to say Goodbye.......2007-06-11
I purchased these because I had already watched the entire CD collection of the series and hoped for some closure. I read reviews that hinted at "don't bother", but I am glad that I listened to my own counsel.
It's true that the conclusion invites more episodes, and that's too bad, but I did learn some of the answers to my questions. And I laughed and cried. So all in all it was worth the money.
Jarod and Ms. Parker.......2007-06-10
I watched the whole series when it was first run, and now again on DVD including the 2 movies. Loved them all. I just wish that there were more to come.
love love love it.......2007-06-09
I LOVED PRETENDER WHEN IT WAS ON TV AND I LOVE IT NOW! IT TOTALLY TAKES YOU TO ANOTHER PLACE! I WISH IT'S CREATORS WOULD GET TOGETHER AND DO IT AGAIN! NOW WITH ALL THIS "CRAP" ON THE TUBE IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE SOMETHING LIKE THE PRETENDER OR PROFILER ETC.
finally.......2007-05-31
As any Pretender fan would atest to, this is a long awaited continuation to the series. Wish there were more but at least it answered some of the lingering questions.

After more than a decade of false starts and several potential directors, the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical finally made it to the big screen with Alan Parker (The Commitments) at the helm and Madonna in the coveted title role of Argentina's first lady, Eva Perón. A triumph of production design, costuming, cinematography, and epic-scale pageantry, the film follows the rise of Eva Perón to the level of supreme social and political celebrity in the 1940s. Like Madonna, Perón was a material girl (she was only 33 when she died); she was instrumental in the political success of her husband, Juan Perón (Jonathan Pryce). But Eva was also a supremely tragic figure whose life was essentially hollow at its core despite the lavish benefits of her nearly goddess-like status. The film has a similar quality--it's visually astonishing but emotionally distant, and benefits greatly from the singing commentary of Ché (Antonia Banderas), who serves as a passionate chorus to guide the viewer through the elaborate parade of history. --Jeff Shannon

Despite widespread controversy, her passion changed a nation forever! Customer Reviews:
Savior in the Eyes of Argentina.......2007-05-01
Evita is a historically relevant musical about a woman named Evita Peron who, in the early twentieth century, rose to the top and became a significant influence to the people of Argentina. She started her life out on the lowest ranks of society, an outcast in her own right, she slowly rose her way up to become a national figure in the political spectrum. I thought it was a very well made movie with a great deal of historical accuracies incorporated into it. Madonna was an excellent choice for casting. This movie has an excellent entertainment value while also incorporating historical value into it!
Terrific musical.......2007-04-26
Evita is the best contemporary historical musical out there. Madonna shines in this film, as does Antonio Bandaraz. Anyone who doesn't appreciate Evita, obviously doesn't know their history.
My one complaint is that the DVD has NO extra features! There really is no point in purchasing the DVD over the VHS unless you want to be able to flip through the chapters or care about wide screen. I would have liked to see some director's commentary as well as an interview with Madonna. Some historical notes would have been nice too.
Original and flawed.......2007-04-18
Evita is not really a musical. It is an uneasy combination of tableau and opera. There is no spoken dialogue. It is worth seeing just for the great costumes and production values and the exquisite cinematography. Crowd scenes are well staged and exciting. There are also some great dance scenes. With powerful voices and a convincing star this could have been an extraordinary film. However, with the exception of Antonio Banderas, the singing is surprisingly thin and weak. Jonathan Pryce as Juan Peron gives a fine understated performance, but Madonna is miscast: past her prime and out of her depth. The first rule of acting is "look good on screen" and unfortunately she doesn't. Gaunt and sallow, with garish makeup and inexplicably bloodshot eyes, she cuts an unconvincing and depressing figure. As he did in Cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote one great song and a whole lot of junk. Sequences of rock music here and there are jarring and anachronistic.
Great.......2007-04-16
I haven't heard the original cast recording so I can't compare this to it but, I think this is a very good movie/musical. Madonna and Antonio Banderas did a great job! The music is really good. This musical is not as good as The Phantom of the Opera but it is hard to be better than Phantom. You MUST see EVITA!
Banderas and Madonna are in top form in this great film........2007-04-15
This masterpiece of film-making needs re-evaluation since in hindsight it can be seen for the superb and masterful work of art and entertainment that it is. I have now seen the film three times and each time I am amazed that this film has not been recognized widely for its considerable attributes.
How does a director convey the oppressive nature of Fascism in a musical? Alan Parker succeeds wonderfully through his use of a muted brown, beige, black, and vanilla color range. He does it through the wonderful photography of riots, poverty, wealth, militarism, and the signs and symbols of power. The cinematography in this film is great. The art direction is super. The editing is perfect. It is a mystery to me why this film wasn't more appreciated by the public.
I think one reason is that folks don't know history and understand the rise of fascism in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Argentina in the 1930s and 1940s. Peron's brand of fascism was threatening to the oligarchy in Argentina that had ruled a nation of farmers and cowboys and peasants. Thus there is no clear picture of good guys and bad guys in the film. At times Eva's appeals to the poor and underserved, the establishment of her foundation, and her ability to communicate with the masses puts her in the role of saint. However, the extortion of the rich to pay for her charities and thus maintain the popularity of Peron is a shrewed political power play.
Madonna is super in this film. Her acting is not naturalistic because she is playing an over-the-top diva and saint. It is Antonio Banderas who gives us a running commentary thorughout the film that continually grounds the viewer in the facts and the actions in this opera.
One last comment: there are very few songs that have the power of Webber and Rice's Don't Cry for Me Argentina. Madonna's performance is spotless when she sings this from her balcony to the crowd below.

<I>The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming</I> looks overly cute now, but really, it was pretty hip for 1966. The cold war was in full deep-freeze when this well-meaning comedy tried to thaw things out a little: a Soviet submarine beaches on the New England coast, sending the locals into a paranoid frenzy. The chief pleasure of the film is Alan Arkin as the sub captain; this was Arkin's first major film role, and he had already mastered his exasperated, slow-burning frown (to say nothing of mastering his Russian dialogue). Arkin snagged an Oscar® nomination, with the movie receiving nominations for best picture, adapted screenplay, and editing--nods that reflect the film's smashing success at the box office. Somewhat dated now, the movie still has its place in the roster of raucous, American small-town comedies; seen in childhood, it will linger nicely as a depiction of foolish grown-ups. <I>--Robert Horton</I>
Description
When a sightseeing Soviet commander runs his submarine aground off the New England coast, the crew's attempts to find a boat to dislodge them almost start WWIII! Alan Arkin leads an all-star castincluding Carl Reiner, Eva Marie Saint, Brian Keith and Jonathan Wintersin this riotous, uproarious [and] side-splitting (Cue) comedy! Russian Lt. Rozanov (Arkin) and his crew hit the beaches of Massachusetts unaware of the panic they're about to start. Despite the Russians harmless intentions, the folks in town think a full-scale Soviet invasion has been launched! What's worse, theirpolice chief (Keith) has left his hysterical assistant (Winters) in charge and the one man who knows the truth (Reiner) is only stirring up more chaos!
Customer Reviews:
one of the best.......2007-05-19
For those that experienced the cold war this is an exceptional movie. For those who only read about it the movie is merely great. It's nearly impossible to fault anything in here. It has a terrific collection of actors, the story is compelling, the whole family can watch and enjoy it. It's message is right on target and eternal. Winter's comment (not sure I can quote it) is so appropriate: "Why can't we all just get along?" There are just a few movies that I can watch over and over again and still enjoy; this is one of them.
FUNNY.......2007-05-08
I thought this was a great movie without the main characters taking off all their clothes and the stupid sex scenes or rap and hip-hop music we seem to have to make something a hit. Yeah, it's a dated movie but great entertainment.
Great cast .......2007-03-30
A very funny movie that is still funny years later.
Cold War Fun.......2007-03-28
I hadn't seen this movie since I was a kid and when my Dad recommended getting this I was glad you did because it is so funny. The humour is still fresh despite the cold war being over. A movie like this could never work today but its still good clean fun.
The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming.......2007-03-08
A very entertaining film made during the cold war. There are numerous humorous scenes that typifies a New Englander, from the town drunk who envisioned himself as reinacting Paul Revere's famous ride to the old Veteran who thought he should organize a militia to protect the city from what was viewed as an impending attack by Russians who only wanted to find a way to get themselves back to sea. I think it is well done. Alan Arkin does a great job portraying a Russian officer who is frustrated with his Captain.

Vintage Bruce Willis outing........2007-03-28
If you like hard hitting, no-nonsense, gut wrenching action performed by a realistic and honest actor who always manages to do the right and fair thing, you will find that here, as in all of Bruce Willis' movies. They leave you satisfied at the end and a little out of breath, but every thing has been put right before it is all over. This one is full of action as always and he has the requisite number of close calls, but comes out the winner of the girl and the game. It also presents a good exposure of the city of Pittsburg and its water front on the rivers that meet there to form the mighty Ohio River.
Bruce vs. the wretched serial killer.......2005-07-06
Bruce Willis would not be the first actor to bag on their own work. Some people might take the fact that an actor bags on their own work as a very authoritative statement and not bother seeing such a film. If the actor doesn't like their own film, why should anyone else bother? But I think such need not always be the case, and this movie is one good example. And artist is always critical of their own work, and rightly so. But just because they see things they don't like about their own work or something else about a film they are in, does not mean that others will certainly see the same things for the same reasons.
After seeing a trailer for this movie on a dvd I have, I came upon an IMDB post about a Bob Costas' TV interview (I've never seen it myself) and Bruce Willis saying he knew this movie was crap when he was making it, and that this experience made him decide to choose projects based on the projects merits and avoid Hollywood tripe. For this and other reasons, I did not bother to pursue getting the movie at the time. Recently, I came across this movie in a Wal-Mart $5 discount bin and being a Bruce Willis fan I grabbed it. After watching it, I find it easy to say that even though I don't care much for movies involving serial killers, this was a decent enough flick that would have been worth it had I paid $10 instead. It could be defined as typical Hollywood tripe, especially if you're an actor who's been in the business for years and are looking to expand your horizons. But not all tripe is truly tripe. Bruce did a decent enough job going up against the killer, and the movie was not just tired and boring and by the numbers. It looks and sounds good, has good production values and cinematography, is fairly suspenseful and entertaining. In the big picture it's probably fairly typical of this type of movie, but if you want to see Bruce Willis go through the paces in the taking down the serial killer routine, it's a decent and interesting take on it all and without a lot of in your face gore or anything.
Incidentally, I and plenty of others think that Hudson Hawk rocks! Some people just don't get it I suppose.
Fully entertaining..!.......2005-06-16
This is a great movie, there is nothing you can not like in this movie.
Bruce willis as well as the rest of the cast did a good job in this movie with very good acting, the plot is also entertaining with some twists in it, the whole thing about how all the family members of Bruce are cops is just cool, reminded me a little of cop land (town of cops), but this movie is even better than cop land.
Tom sizemore performance was also noticable, even Sarah jessica parker was good here.
currently, i only own a VHS copy of the movie, but if any one have not seen it yet, my advice is to buy the DVD because this movie is worth it and is FULLY ENTERTAINING !
Incredibly Enjoyable.......2005-05-16
I still think the main reason that this works is Bruce Willis. But when you factor in someone of the skill of Pastorelli, a guy who manages to make Arnie look brilliant, you have a good fun action movie.
Pastorelli said on Letterman , that even Arnie knows he is not a great actor, but he knew that Arnie still made good films, since people watch Arnie for Arnie.
However, if you watch Pastorelli, hell, you get the whole kit and kaboodle. This together with Brion James, and the great supporting cast ( And I do NOT include Sarah Jessica in this) you get a fun and enjoyable movie.
Also, the Death of Bruce Willis's characters Father is very moving.Whilst his character has a small role, it is a key plot point.
ENJOY
A big dumb action thriller..........2004-07-23
This is a big dumb action thriller, and I mean that in the best possible way. Sure, it's not Die Hard... However I don't think it's fair to compare every Bruce Willis movie to one of the greatest action movies ever made. It has more than it's fair share of excitement and the plot has enough twists and turns to keep me occupied. The opening car chase is top notch. There are quite a few excellent character actors who turn in great performances here... Look for Tom Sizemore, Robert Pastorelli, Andre Braugher, and Timothy Busfield (as well as his spindly little girl legs). It's not going to change the world. It's not going to make you forget Die Hard. It's a fun thriller... especially with a couple friends, some popcorn, and a few beers. Worth a rental!

This long-awaited adaptation of the Broadway musical, directed by Alan Parker (Fame, The Commitments), features Madonna in her award-winning performance as Eva Peron, the controversial and inspirational First Lady of Argentina, as well as the score from the long-running Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. The story of Peron's rise to power with her husband (Jonathan Pryce) is narrated in song by peasant insurrectionist Che (Antonio Banderas), as Evita's glamour, poise, and ultimate tragedy inspire a nation in the midst of political and social upheaval. The film is a powerful one, visually stunning and epic in its scope, and yet highly emotional in both the well-known songs and the performances. Pryce portrays a deeply flawed man, ruthless and yet devoted to his wife. Banderas is a swashbuckling figure, instilling passion in the heart of Eva Peron. And Madonna gives a strong and commanding performance as a woman who loves her husband and loves her people but must fight the stirring passion inside her. Featuring "You Must Love Me," an Academy Award-winning song written for the film, Evita is vivid and powerful entertainment for people who love musicals for both stage and screen. --Robert Lane

<I>--Robert Horton</I>
Customer Reviews:
one of the best.......2007-05-19

Predictable But Entertaining.......2006-07-08
I liked this movie, but I can't for the life of me tell you why. It features Nicolette Sheridan as "Donna Randal," a wife and mother, who has a brief affair with her daughters teacher while her husband "Jeff," played by Robert Seeliger, is away on assignment. The affair is actually encouraged by her best friend and co-worker "Roz," played by Leni Parker.
Donna is upset because her husband's job as a foreign correspondent keeps him away for extended periods of time, and while on his current assignment he has forgotten to call her on their anniversary. She meets her daughters teacher "Adam," played by Andrew Jackson, who sympathizes with her, and she is quite taken by him. She runs into him at a concert and one thing leads to another and she ends up in his bed for one night.
As it turns out when she gets home and takes a shower to wash off the effects of her adultery, her husband shows up while she is towelling off, and announces that he is home to stay. She doesn't seem to be really overjoyed by the news, taking advantage of his presence to chew him out for past absences, but they do come together when he shows the proper remorse for his past sins of doing his job,(a little sarcasm there). As it rurns out, Adam, the teacher, shows up that night not knowing that Jeff has returned, and after an awkward few monents leaves, pretending to have been concerned about the daughter "Melinda," played by Amanda Tilson. Jeff seems a little suspicious, suggesting to Donna that since he is home and Melissa seems to be OK there will be no need for Adam to pay any more visits.
As the plot develops it turns out that her dalliance with Adam was videotaped and a copy is delivered to her husband at his office. He is understandably upset, and after playing the tape for her he leaves, taking Melinda with him.
After few days she goes to see Jeff to plead for a reconciliation. This is where the movie drops from a "4" to a "3" for me. When he makes it plain that he is through with her and can not forgive her adultery she tries to excuse it by saying she had been angry at his absence, was lonely and upset at his forgetting their anniversary. It seems to me that his reply should have been "so your reaction to being angry with me is to go out and have sex with someone else?" The logical follow-up would be "how many other times have you been angry with me?"
But he passes up that opportunity and the movie progresses to what I consider a formulaic and predictable conclusion that leaves me mildly dissappointed. All in all it was worth an evenings viewing and Nicollette in a tight tee shirt made it worth watching for me.
THE DESPERATE HOUSEWIFE FROM KNOTS LANDING.......2005-04-16
Okay, I'll admit up front that DEADLY BETRAYAL, a movie made for the Movie Channel is: sleazy, derivative, preposterous at times, etc. However, I found myself totally engrossed with it, and found a new respect for the lovely Nicolette Sheridan. Miss Sheridan burst onto the scene as the nymphomaniac daughter of Michelle Phillips on KNOTS LANDING. Of course now, she's a co-star on the hot series DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Sheridan who is now in her early 40s proves that you don't have to be under 30 to have a smoldering sensuality, and a gentle innocence at the same time. As the wife who makes a fatal mistake with a one night affair, she brings an intense ferocity to her role. Andrew Jackson as the initially charming Adam Hamilton, a teacher who has Sheridan's daughter as one of his pupils, is very good. His transition to his true personality is quick, but believable, and he uses his beefcake physique and intense eyes to bring a despicable character to life. Unfortunately, Robert Seeliger as Sheridan's work-obsessed husband seems uncomfortable with his role and he has no chemistry with Sheridan. Amanda Tilson as Melinda, the daughter, is a very effective child actress, whose fear of an impending divorce is believably felt. Leni Parker as Roz, Sheridan's buddy, is histrionic but affecting in her role. The movie's pacing is deliberate and slow, but suspense does build, although the ending seems a little rushed. It's not great cinema, but I found it entertaining.
best movie i have seen!!!!.......2005-02-08
this movie is about a woman who has an affair with her daughters' teacher while her husband is away on buisness. but the man she affairs with tape records them having sex and sends it to her husband and he is outraged. but what the man also does is come in to their house and steals stuff. with the help of another woman who has sex with the man, the woman is able to prove that the man is a killer and stalker. good movie!!!

Low budget and silly.......2007-04-08
Two women ride across California on their motorcycles while being chased by a motorcycle gang and an escaped serial killer with an axe. The motorcycle gang don't ride harley's, they are on dirtbikes! LOL!! I kid you not. And the serial killer seems to be bullet proof for no apparent reason. Maybe he is a poor man's evil superman. What a joke.
Axe-lent.......2006-03-15
I was pleasently surprised with this action/horror film. The action was great and the girls were hot. I was always a fan of Jason London, and he did not disappoint me here.
There are a lot of weird characters in the movie, and a few surprising twists.
Goes well with pop corn and beer...
Campy and entertaining.......2006-03-15
There are some really scary moments in the film which made me jump. Most of the characters are quirky and the girls are sexy.
The story has some interesting twists, and there is a big surprise late in the movie (I am NOT revealing it...).
As non of these movies are really 'serious' movies, this one for sure keeps it a bit campy. I enjoyed the chases, and as much as it does seem like a low budget movie, the action looked good. All the elements were there, and I enjoyed it while having pop corn in front of my TV....
YOU GET WHAT YOU AXE FOR.......2006-03-05
AXE, another "quality" entry from MTI HOME VIDEO has some of the worst acting committed to celluloid in some time...even the usually efficient Jason London is horrible in this crazed mishmash of genres. An axe serial killer escapes from prison and seeks revenge on those who sent him; a biker gang terrorizes two busty broads who have been climbing and then engage the bunch in a brawl in London's bar; they find some money, about 3 thousand dollars when they steal one of the biker's bikes, and then we get a silly chase with motorcross bikes that sound like souped up Harleys. Not one minute of it is credible; the Michael Myers like axe killer gets shot, stabbed, pinned to a wall by a big truck, axed, and when he tries to get the girls one last time, there's not a bit of blood on him nor any holes in his shirt that he's been stabbed, axed and shot in. When the girls finish their climb in the climax, there's not a speck of dirt on them or any scratches either. The movie tries a few surprise twists that only end up being incredulous, so AXE me no further. It's a rental when nothing else is in.
AXE DVD REVIEW.......2006-02-26
Completely terrible. The acting was so bad and the story lacked originality. Not only that but the movie felt like it had two different stories tied in one. The two main characters looked like lesbians, especially BUTCH the black hair chick. Although it was bad, it was kind of funny. One of the funniest parts was when that butch lookin' chick said, "hold your fire!" In this part of the movie she is trying to pretend she is some sort of cop. And how did butch still have bullets left in her gun after she ran out. Someone please tell me?
NOT WORTH RENTING!!!
