The opening and closing moments of Robert (<I>Forrest Gump</I>) Zemeckis's <I>Contact</I> astonish viewers with the sort of breathtaking conceptual imagery one hardly ever sees in movies these day--each is an expression of the heroine's lifelong quest (both spiritual and scientific) to explore the meaning of human existence through contact with extraterrestrial life. The movie begins by soaring far out into space, then returns dizzyingly to earth until all the stars in the heavens condense into the sparkle in one little girl's eye. It ends with that same girl as an adult (Jodie Foster)--her search having taken her to places beyond her imagination--turning her gaze inward and seeing the universe in a handful of sand. <I>Contact</I> traces the journey between those two visual epiphanies. Based on Carl Sagan's novel, <I>Contact</I> is exceptionally thoughtful and provocative for a big-budget Hollywood science fiction picture, with elements that recall everything from <I>2001</I> to <I>The Right Stuff</I>. Foster's solid performance (and some really incredible alien hardware) keep viewers interested, even when the story skips and meanders, or when the halo around the golden locks of rising-star-of-a-different-kind Matthew McConaughey (as the pure-Hollywood-hokum love interest) reaches Milky Way-level wattage. Ambitious, ambiguous, pretentious, unpredictable--<I>Contact</I> is all of these things and more. Much of it remains open to speculation and interpretation, but whatever conclusions one eventually draws, <I>Contact</I> deserves recognition as a rare piece of big-budget studio filmmaking on a personal scale. <I>--Jim Emerson</I>

5 out of 5 stars Right Down My Alley!.......2007-06-21

The type of movie I love. It is scifi, rich in mystery! The beginning is very slow. When I watch it now I skip right to the beginning of the action. From there the movie flys. You are truly kept looking for the next clue, the next answer. You want to find out what this is all about. They could have done something different with the conclusion, but I liked the change in the main characters outlook.

5 out of 5 stars This movie is assigned watching for college Ethics class........2007-06-04

This movie is rich in ethical points of view. It ranges from the insane who believe their harmful actions are saving humanity, to non-ethical behaviour by saying what ever it takes to succeed. the moral of the movie is amazingly simple yet illusive to even the wisest of Philosophers.
The special effects are fantastic, the casting is brilliant and the writing is incredibly profound. A definite 5 star movie.

1 out of 5 stars terrible.......2007-05-15

it was long, unengaging and frankly, the end was not creative in the slightest. Don't know what else to tell you.

5 out of 5 stars Great "What could be" Movie.......2007-05-12

Somewhat believable tale about potential life in the universe. Inspiring and fun to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Contact.......2007-05-12

Contact is a movie about Astronomy and the search for signals in space from remote, intelligent life. Jodie Foster plays a gifted astronomer who struggles to keep her work and reputation alive in a very controversial field that very few people--including most other scientists--do not take seriously. Even a non-scientific audience cannot help becoming totally engulged in this story. The acting and direction are outstanding, and the special effects are stunning. The viewer is swept into a whirlwind of excitement and suspense as a world that does not yet exist for us becomes not only alive, but compellingly believable.

There aren't enough superlatives in the dictionary to describe the excellence of Akeelah and the Bee. Superbly written and directed by Doug Atchison, this PG-rated family drama covers the same dramatic territory as the acclaimed 2002 documentary <I>Spellbound</I> and the 2005 drama <I>Bee Season</I>, but the fictional story of 11-year-old Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer) is, if anything, even more entertaining, inspiring, and full of hope for the potential of children everywhere. Although reluctant at first (and fearful of being labeled a "brainiac" by classmates at her under-funded middle school in South Central Los Angeles), Akeelah grows determined to win the district, regional, and ultimately the Scripps National Spelling Bee, aided by the able coaching of an English professor (Laurence Fishburne) who, like Akeelah's overworked single mother (Angela Bassett) is slowly recovering from a devastating personal loss. Structured like a conventional sports drama, Akeelah and the Bee rises above its generic trappings to become an uplifting and deeply moving study of friendship, pride, fair play, and above all, the value of self-confidence and realization that there's more to life than winning. As played by the young Palmer in an award-worthy performance, Akeelah is a winner in the best sense of the word, and so is this wonderfully positive movie. --Jeff Shannon

Description

An inspirational drama, Akeelah and the Bee is the story of Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer), a precocious eleven-year-old girl from south Los Angeles with a gift for words. Despite the objections of her mother Tanya (Angela Bassett), Akeelah enters various spelling contests, for which she is tutored by the forthright Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne); her principal Mr. Welch (Curtis Armstrong) and the proud residents of her neighborhood. Akeelah's aptitude earns her an opportunity to compete for a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and in turn unites her neighborhood who witness the courage and inspiration of one amazing little girl.

5 out of 5 stars I-N-S-P-I-R-I-N-G!.......2007-06-05

At first, this would seem like a typical against-all odds themed films that you've all seen before, but there is more depth to this than that. Emotionally complex and gratifying tale of a young girl in the ghetto who overcomes to try to be a spelling champ.

What I found interesting is not only the complex relationship she has with Laurence Fishburne (in one of his best roles) as her mentor and his fascinating (and unexpected) motives in helping the unrelated Akeelah, and the friendship and comraderie she develops with an Asian and Latino competitor (the former's relationship with his father is a subject for another movie itself),.

But one really stereotype-shattering scene in the film that fascinated me more than anything else is when Akeelah's wannabe drug-dealing gangster brother riducules her. The older drug dealer that her brother looks up to puts a stop to this and encourages Akeelah. I loved this because it shows a seldom-seen aspect of ghetto life-even hardcore thugs sometimes want to see kids take another path than what they have chosen. Having experienced this myself as a child, this scene gave this movie an addded icing to the top for me! The way the neighborhood puts a lot of hope into Akeelah and rallies around the child as a symbol of the possible is moving beyond words.

Imagine Jimmy Stewart coming back as a preteen African-American girl and you get the idea. See it, and be I-N-S-P-I-R-E-D!

5 out of 5 stars great flix.......2007-06-01

I was apprehensive at first and did not want to see this in the movies however, decided to rent it on Netflix - I'm glad I did. My interpetation of this movie was not a race issue. It was a story about a community who thought that a girls dream was impossible and foolish, came together and assisted her. She was not your typical child; but had the desire, help and work ethics to accomplish her goal. In this movie children picked their friends because of common interests not race or income. The ending was great - a little spice changes the bee.

5 out of 5 stars It's not about just spelling, it's about R-E-S-P-E-C-T.......2007-05-22

I missed "Akeelah and the Bee" in theatres and I sincerely regret that. This is one of those films that you leave with a tear in your eye and a song in your heart. "Akeelah" is not just about spelling, but about dreaming--and spreading the contagion of dreams to the most unexpected people.

The soundtrack for this film is also one of the best I have ever heard. Whoever orchestrated the music did a fabulous job selecting inspirational songs from Old School to new funk. Both are well worth owning and playing again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome!!.......2007-05-18

I saw the movie for the first time and was thrilled. I thought this was a great family movie and very very encouraging. Keep up the good work Laurence and Angela. Hopefully you guys will do more movies together. All others in this movie did a great job as well. So enspiring for African American families. Would love to see more on this level. Lastly, I have 3 words to say.
Great! Great! Great!

5 out of 5 stars Surprise Delight.......2007-05-16

When Akeelah and the Bee first was released, I did not rush to see it,
depite favorable reviews. It seemed each week that other movies were
more to my interest. Then, I rented it on Netflix. And was I surprised!
This is one of the best family friendly films I have ever seen. From
the first moment, this movie sets just the right tone, and continues to
get everything just right. Keke Palmer and Lawrence Fishburne and the
entire cast are superb. The script is outstanding. I personslly liked
the film better than any of the 5 academy award nominees, including
Little Miss Sunshine, my preference for best picture of the 5 nominees.
Don't miss this gem. My only regret is it is a fictional story.

Tina Turner, that dynamic diva of pop/soul/R&B from the '60s to the '90s, sings like a woman whose life story is every bit as rough and tough as her voice. And What's Love Got to Do With It, based on her autobiographical account (in I, Tina, written with Kurt Loder) of her years under the iron fist of her abusive husband and musical partner/Svengali Ike, is further proof of what we've always known about Tina: She's what you call a survivor. The movie is sort of the Disney version of Tina Turner's story--a glossy but thoroughly enjoyable, old-fashioned showbiz biopic with laughs, tears, great music, and outrageous (but faithful) period decor, costumes, makeup, and hairstyles. Our Heroine triumphs not only over the rigorous demands of her career in the music business, but finally manages to bust out of her troubled, violent marriage as well and become her own person. This is a movie that'll have you shouting at the top of your lungs: "You go, girl!" --Jim Emerson

Description

Experience for yourself the powerful true-life story of Tina Turner -- rock 'n' roll's remarkable and talented superstar. Laurence Fishburne (THE MATRIX) and Angela Bassett (HOW STELLA GOT HER GROVE BACK) deliver winning performances as Ike and Tina Turner -- whose turbulent relationship eventually forces Tina to leave and face the fear, pay the price, and find the courage to believe in herself. Don't miss WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT -- the amazing and uplifting story of one of the world's most exciting, high-energy entertainers!

5 out of 5 stars "Tina Turner" What a wonderful name!.......2007-04-06

This movie is so great, now it has become one of favorite movies.
I have heard about Tina Turner's life before, but I did not know
Tina Turner's life was 'that' hard.
This name "Tina Turner" now sounds different to me
after watching this movie, it is indeed a wonderful name to keep.
She deserves the name "Tina Turner".
As a human being, this movie and her life inspires me a lot.

5 out of 5 stars I just want to tell everyone..........2007-04-01

When this movie came out and I saw it at the movietheater---

You know the scene in the car where Tine finally gets enough and hit him back? Everyone in the theater started yelling and screaming, clapping their hands!! It was awesome and I will never forget it!!

5 out of 5 stars The Success of Tina = the Crucifixion of Ike...........2007-03-21

This is a really fabulous movie with Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. Based on Tina Turner's life and her book I, Tina (which I have not read), the movie begins with her (formerly known as Anna Mae Bullock) as a little girl singing in a church choir, but out of sync from the rest of the group to where she gets evicted from the church. Years later, as a teen in the late 50s, she moves to St. Louis to live with her mother, who had walked out years before. Soon after that, she meets Ike Turner (played by Laurence Fishburne), the man who would give her his name. He gets her started as a singer and they get married shortly later on. At first, he is really sweet and kind to her, but after a while, the marriage starts going downhill. Ike becomes pressured and stressed out from his own career, abuses narcotics, and is jealous of Tina's success to where he gets very volatile and abusive to her. The scenes where Ike abuses Tina and bullies her are so disturbing. The scene where Ike and Tina are doing their own version of Creedence Clearwater Revival's Proud Mary is so wonderful, but when the crowd starts cheering after the performance, Tina receives all of the cheering, while Ike is almost ignored by the crowd. After a while, Tina is abused by Ike again, but it is the last straw for her as she quietly flees away from him to a hotel across the street while he is taking a nap at a hotel they had checked in. She goes to court and divorces him, and leaving with nothing except for her name. From what is seen in this movie, Tina is very successful in her career, while the "crucifixion" of Ike is happening at the same time. He meets her sometime later on, gives her flowers and begs her to give him another chance and promises that he will do well and treat her better than the last time. She does not accept his promise (nobody would disagree with that), and gets out of his new car and slams the car door so hard the glass in the window shatters. What a way for Tina to tell Ike to get lost! She knew that she was determined to make it on her own without Ike. Good for Tina!! Bassett and Fishburne were great in their roles. This movie is worth watching. Jenifer Lewis does a great job playing Tina's mother. This is without any doubt one of the best true story movies ever to come out. I would definitely recommend it to friends. Get the CD soundtrack of this movie, too. You will enjoy that as well. Tina Turner is one of the greatest entertainers in the music industry!! Way to go, Tina!! Ike, get yourself on the right track!!

In the sensible yet elegant hands of actresses Helen Mirren and Julie Walters, <I>Calendar Girls</I> walks a fine line between sappiness and snickering and ends up both wonderfully funny and gently touching. When her best friend Annie (Walters, <I>Billy Elliot</I>) loses her husband, Chris (Mirren, <I>Prime Suspect</I>, <I>Gosford Park</I>) cooks up a scheme to memorialize him: They and their friends--all fiftysomething women--will make a nude calendar to raise money for the hospital where he died. The calendar becomes hugely popular, but the success may drive a wedge between the two women's friendship. Based on an actual event, <I>Calendar Girls</I> carefully balances the stories of several women as it follows the calendar's media explosion, becoming a surprisingly moving fable of loss, determination, and the perils of fame. And let's face it--Helen Mirren is one of the wittiest and sexiest women alive, clothes on or not. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

When 12 ordinary members of the Women's Institute, a prim and proper local ladies' club, decide they need to find a more compelling way to raise money for a new charity, they turn to their traditional annual calendar and give it a very untraditional twist. Behind the usual baked goods, the apple pressing, and the flower arrangements are the women -- completely nude! Starring 2003 Golden Globe nominee Helen Mirren (Best Actress, CALENDAR GIRLS) and Julie Walters (HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS), CALENDAR GIRLS is a terrifically entertaining comedy. And that's the naked truth.

Great movie. Helen Mirren, Julie Walters and more of Britain's top cast.
How a nude calender can be sofisticated.

5 out of 5 stars Calendar Girls.......2007-03-29

Love movies that don't have young, hot looking women. It's a pleasure to see movies about every day women in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars A Touch of Class.......2007-02-04

In Rylstone, a small village in North Yorkshire, John Baker, beloved husband of Angela Baker, dies of leukemia. Angela belongs to the Women's Institute, an organization not unlike the many women's garden clubs that are all over these United States (Visiting lecturers expound on the joys of broccoli). Ms. Baker, along with the other middle-aged women in her group, comes up with the bold new idea of printing a calendar of "nude, not naked" women to raise money for the local hospital in John's honor. After all he did say that the last stage of a woman's life is her most glorious-- sort of the last rose of summer motif-- because she will soon turn to seed. These good women became an overnight sensation as it was a photo shot heard around the world. Their story was the basis for the tasteful film "Calendar Girls," starring Helen Mirren as Chris Harper, "Miss January" and the driving force behind the concept in the first place, and Julie Walters as Annie Clark, and directed by Nigel Cole. The Brits do this sort of understated classy film so well. We need look no further than the recent "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and "The Queen" for evidence. The acting here is flawless, the photography is excellent and all the props the nude ladies use to make themselves less naked are appropriately placed.

Included on the DVD are interviews with both the director and the original twelve calendar ladies, neither of which should be missed.

4 out of 5 stars naughty but nice.......2007-01-25

When Annie Clark's husband dies of leukemia, her best friend Chris Harper happens upon an idea to honor his memory after finding a pornography magazine belonging to her son. A group of women friends in their fifties from Yorkshire's normally staid Women's Institute pose in the nude ("not naked!" we are reminded in the film) to produce and market a pin-up calendar, the proceeds of which would benefit the hospital where John was treated and died. Starting with an initial print run of 500 calendars, the women meet international acclaim, including an appearance on the Jay Leno Show, and raise $1 million for the hospital. There is nothing erotic or even sensual in this lighthearted British comedy (rated PG-13). All the women's poses are strategically obscured by potted plants and the like. Instead, in addition to the mischief-making comedy, there are surprisingly powerful sub-themes of body image, aging, grief and loss, community, and memory. The film is based upon a true story from 1999. I was prepared to dismiss this film but instead enjoyed it for the lighthearted fun that it is.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent example of brit humor.......2007-01-12

Helen Mirren and Julie Walters are fantastic. A typical example of british life style. It's got everything, it makes you laugh, it makes you weep, it makes you think. Absolutely fabulous! What a great "Sunday Afternoon' movie!

Robert De Niro plays a weary thief tempted by wily old associate Marlon Brando into, yes, <I>one last job</I>, a plan to rob a priceless scepter from Montreal's Customs House. Director Frank Oz's heist thriller partners De Niro with hotshot upstart Edward Norton, and you'd have to be determinedly grumpy not to get half a kick out of Brando, DeNiro, and Norton--more than holding his own--coolly bouncing off one another in a Method paradise. Brando may be enormous and breathing heavily with every move, but his technique is as agile as it ever was; he still seems spontaneously clever. Oz doesn't have the most crackling visual style in the world, as the film is far too smooth for tension, and keeps tapping Howard Shore's music score to do most of the work in that department; the divine Angela Bassett is once again totally wasted in a 10-minute throwaway role as De Niro's girlfriend. <I>The Score</I> isn't anything new, and there isn't a single surprise, but if you're into this sort of thing you do respond to its polished familiarity. <I>--Steve Wiecking</I>

5 out of 5 stars The Score: Smart With Heart.......2007-06-21

The Score is hugely entertaining. Set in Montreal, Canada, the environs are familiar yet slightly foreign. Robert De Niro's gentleman thief character Nick is likeable and believable. His day job is owner of the NYC jazz club.

In a memorable scene, Nicky offers rock solid middle class advice to would be hot shot Edward Norton's character by advising him never to take longshots or high risks. "Make a list of everything you want and take the next twenty years to get it." Sounds more like a stock broker than a master thief.

The Score's score is superb. Jazzy and atmospheric.

The actual theft and escape scene is creative and well orchestrated.

Great movie with a great twist.

4 out of 5 stars The youth against the experience!.......2007-05-10

The score is film with a double reading. On one hand is an electrifying and chilling story of a specialist of first order and a very young newcomer (Edward Norton in an extraordinary performance as the young defiant). This double speech will intermingle in order to convey us one of the most breathtaking movies of this year.

You will realize how you can make close affinities with that old cult movie. "Cincinnati Kid" . This was, on the other hand, the last Op. of Marlon Brando, too.

4 out of 5 stars Good flick !.......2007-03-18

This is a robbery movie that has some twists and turns .. I think you will enjoy it.. With these two actors you really cant go wrong. DO not read much of the story-line because the ending you dont want to know... watch the movie ...!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Score.......2007-01-12

Great movie. I dont understand all the hate towards this movie, but it has great actors with a great plot.

De Niro says that he was already done, but there was ONE last big thing he had to do before then. This movie kept me entertained throughout the whole thing, because you wanted to know what he was gonna do next and so on. This movie has great actors, and Norton did a great job of playing 2 different characters at the same time. The story could have maybe been a little more fleshed out with backgrounds, but it doesnt take away from the movie at all in my opinion.

The movie has very little action in the beggining, then it grows more and more as the movie progesses. The best parts of the movie are the planning of the heist, and the end when everything takes place. Also at the VERY end when De Niro and Norton are talking on the phone. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes the main actors, or just a great overall movie.

3 out of 5 stars A Score to Settle Between Combatants........2007-01-10

Edward Norton has come a long way from portraying the weird-looking punk, Jack,in this movie to the handsome, debonair Illutionist of 2006. The story of a jazz club in Montreal run on dirty money was by Daniel Taylor. Frank Oz directed. The music was selected by Howard Shore. I enjoyed M. Allison's song at the piano in the Club most of all. The ending was the only surprise, but it was predictable.

There were a few complications with their planned theft. Norton was a good actor as a handicapped employee (with symptoms of a stroke) who worked on the inside to help with the heist at the House of Commons. He's sneaky but no one pays any attention to him, and he has access and keys to important places. He was actually Jack Teller and not Brian at all. Now, that took acting! They made it look complicated as they avoided the security cameras. Nero in that silly mask especially with the goggles, was almost comical. It was all done by computers. I wish I had more tech savvy and maybe I'd know how to restart my computer some hacker knocked out. It was long and drawn out and I really got tired as it was not suspenseful, a lot of damage and sparks flying, but he was double crossed by Jack.

Or was he? Jack was left hight and dry without so much as busfare to get out of town. He was a con man, albeit a super smart one, but he was out-foxed by a pro who'd switched bags. And, thus, the treasure was headed to the right place while Jack to jail most probably.

Just as Do the Right Thing was the capstone of Spike Lee's earlier career, Malcolm X marked the next milestone in the filmmaker's artistic maturity. It seemed everything Lee had done up to that point was to prepare him for this epic biography of America's fiery civil-rights leader, who is superbly played by Oscar-nominated Denzel Washington, from his early days as a zoot-suited hustler known as "Detroit Red" to his spiritual maturity after his pilgrimage to Mecca, as a Black Muslim by the name of El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. Do the Right Thing climaxed with the photographic images of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King engulfed by flames of rage; Malcolm X explores the genesis and evolution of that rage over Malcolm's lifetime, and how these two great figures--held up to the public as polar-opposites within the African American human rights movement (King for nonviolent civil disobedience, Malcolm for achieving equality "by any means necessary")--were each essential to the agenda of the other. Lee careens from the hedonistic ebullience of Malcolm's early days to the stark despair of prison, from his life-changing conversion to Islam to his emergence as a dynamic political leader--all with an epic sweep and vitality that illuminates personal details as well as political ideology. Angela Bassett is also terrific as Malcolm's wife, Betty Shabazz. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Malcolm X.......2007-05-30

It's really an amazing film in which Mr. Freeman does an magnific interpretation. It hit you in your stomach the way it present the black people in the american society and really think.

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked And Underrated.......2007-05-24

Spike Lee's masterpiece, and visually one of the best films ever made. Denzel Washington gives his best performance by far, and probably should have received that year's Academy Award for Best Actor. Losing to Al Pacino for "Scent of a Woman." Though as Mr. Washington once expressed, if he had to lose to someone that year, it should only have been to Mr. Pacino for his powerful performance in that film. And until recent years, Hollywood and the white viewing public just weren't ready for a story like "Malcolm X", and the effort to confront centuries of racism in America. Even denying it any other well deserved Academy Award nominations.

But to all true fans of cinema, do yourself a favor and view this film, if you haven't already. You will have to agree; powerful film making, even if the subject matter is not to your liking. Some scenes will be offensive to Christians, though we must understand where people are in the world.

A born again African-American Christian.

5 out of 5 stars Denzel should have won the Oscar...........2007-04-30

This is my favorite Spike Lee "joint" (personally, I hate that characterization, but Spike likes being Spike). I saw the film in a theater, and I didn't get up once. Despite the fact that the film is 201 minutes long, and there was no intermission, it was absolutely riveting, and one of the better epics ever made. Denzel Washington is utterly amazing as Malcolm X, bringing the fire, passion, intelligence, and dignity the man had. He should have won the Oscar. Spike's direction is really assured, and he doesn't use too many visual tricks here, because the original story is so good. Spike is also good as Shorty, one of Malcolm's friends from his crime days. Originally, I thought Lee had just added the character to give himself a role, but Shorty is mentioned in The Autobiography of Malcolm X. The Mecca scenes are mesmerizing and visually stunning, but it almost didn't happen. Warner Brothers wanted Spike to shoot these scenes in Jersey (!) on the beaches there. Spike ended up calling Warner's racist (which they weren't, they were just being a cheap studio), and it turned a lot of people off of this film and may have cost Spike and Denzel Oscars. Denzel won for Training Day, which is a far worse film. Regardless, this is a magnificent, balanced, and very thorough biopic of a fascinating man. It's one of the better biopics made. Spike never rushes through anything here. It's one of Spike's best films...

5 out of 5 stars Any Better and you Would Need to Meet the REAL Malcolm.......2007-03-22

This movie definitely did not get all of the praises that it deserved. Spike Lee basically brought Malcolm X's life story back to life. Every aspect of his life was in this film. Furthermore, Denzel put his heart and soul into this role. If you didn't know better you would say that he was Malcolm X for real. I still don't understand why he didn't win an oscar for this role. Everybody else in the movie like Angela Bassett and Al Freeman did their thing too. This is a film that you will enjoy forever.

5 out of 5 stars The Powerful Message Will Always Resonate.......2007-03-13

With tremendous performances by Denzel Washington (Malcolm X) and Angela Bassett (Betty Shabazz), Spike Lee delivers what is arguably his greatest movie which will stand the test of time.

Lee does a masterful job in showing how this was truly a partnership between husband and wife, which - in my opinion - is too often ignored by authors/historians when chronicling the life of Malcolm X.

It is Betty Shabazz who enlightens Malcolm X on any number of subjects, including the philandering of Elijah Muhammad (Al Freeman Jr.), and how the young women are tossed to the side like bags of trash, especially in their greatest time of emotional need, when they are pregnant.

The process is arduous and painful for Malcolm X to finally admit that the evidence is overwhelming that his mentor & teacher has used his position of power to manipulate the fragility of others for crass carnal desires. It begins the chasm between the pair that ultimately led to the assassination of Malcolm X.

What remains the most powerful single scene is Malcolm X walking down the street while the ills of the 'hood are played out before him. So much is said in so little time in depicting the black holocaust of the mind, body and soul.

Lee takes cinema to a powerful and dramatic level that is rarely achieved. This is an epic tale of spiritual growth, family and how jealousy & hatred can destroy so much in the instant it takes me to finish this sentence.

James Cameron wrote the script for this not-so-futuristic science fiction tale about a former vice cop (Ralph Fiennes) who now sells addicting, virtual reality clips that allow a user to experience the recorded sensations of others. He becomes embroiled in a murder conspiracy, tries to save a former girlfriend (Juliette Lewis), and has a romance with his chauffeur and bodyguard (Angela Bassett). Cameron's ex-wife, director Kathryn Bigelow (<I>Point Break</I>), brought the whole, busy, violent enterprise to the screen, and while the film's socially relevant heart is in the right place, its excesses wear one out. Some of the casting doesn't quite click either: Fiennes isn't really right for his nervous role, and Lewis is annoying (and unbelievable as the hero's much-yearned-for former squeeze). Expect some ugly if daring moments with the virtual reality stuff. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

It's an environment that will lead him deep into the danger zone when he falls into a maze filled with intrigue and betrayal, murder and conspiracy. Angela Bassett and Juliette Lewis co-star in this provocative, action-packed thriller written by James Cameron (Titanic, The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day).

3 out of 5 stars 3 stars but only for Rafe's hair........2007-05-20

This movie is unmatchable but if you're into hotty Brit actor Rafe then by all means have a look. First of all, mix yourself either a Mojito or a martini...or several. Trust me, you'll need it. The key is to put the "movie" on mute and have the remote at the ready for every time Juliet Whatsherface, Angela Bassett or Tom Sizemore is on-screen. Simply FF. There's no reason to put yourself through that kind of torture. There's also no reason to put yourself through the torture of the clunky and embarrassingly cheesy dialogue. Katherine Bigelow should be ashamed and publicly humilated.

4 out of 5 stars Intense thriller.......2007-05-15

Suspensful, good acting, interesting premise, a little too violent to rate it 5 stars

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2007-05-07

I remember watching Strange Days when it was in theaters. I loved it then and still love it. The mix of scifi with who done it makes it a great movie for almost anyone.

2 out of 5 stars And this is the world we love to live in.............2007-05-04

I may strike a nerve here, but I have to say this big time. I am glad I didn't spend money on this film as I found it to be way too long, and way below average. This kind of reminded me of watching the 1987 film "Wanted: Dead or Alive". I mean there was no less than 200 spews of profanity in the first 10 minutes of the film. I was beginning to think they were getting off on swearing, and explode into a sexual ecstasy of screams and moans at the rate they were going. The film has the plot on New Year's Eve, 1999, and Los Angeles is a war zone( When wasn't it ever a war zone people?), and the drug of the day is a head piece that allows you to play back certain scenes with certain people, and it more, or less makes it a hot commodity, and everyone tries to cash in on the thing, and in the long run it causes strife, and conflict in a community that's already in a fire of decay, anger, hate, and any other negative, and critical thing you can imagine. The National Guard is out patroling the streets along with the city police, and the rogue police as well, and they can't be trusted either. One ex-cop turned dealer in the head piece is trying to help rescue a ex-girlfriend out of the clutches of a pimp/ record producer, and prevent the Millenium from going bust at the same time, and it's hard to tell who's on your side. This is what the world wants though. We have developed the theory that Fear is the beginning of enlightment, and therefore the more fearful we are then the more smart we are. We don't take time for friends, family, to enjoy life, or appreciate the beauty of the world. That's what the head piece is for we say, but guess what? The head piece also can be like a bad batch of acid which can kill you if you're not careful. Ralph Fiennes and Angela Baseheart give a convincing performance as you would see them in love with one another, and in a way they may have had the feelings repressed way down inside of one another as Fiennes when he was a cop rescued Baseheart's family especially her son, so the feelings were there, and they build during the film until thier passionate kiss at the end which to me was the highlight of the movie. The rest of it was a weak plot where excessive swearing has to give it meat, the other performances were at best lackluster, and just the fact that it shows the world as a place that I already know it is didn't make me feel any better. Not even worth a $1.00 price to watch. I wanted to watch it back when it first came out in the theaters, but now I'm glad I didn't.

1 out of 5 stars obsessively horrific.......2007-05-02

since I cannot give this film a 'no' star, which clearly is what it deserves, it will garner a '1' star for the magical talent of Ray Fiennes. Despite that the film is non-stop boredom, fast paced 'huh's?' and a tendancy to leave the room multiple times, without being angry or irritated that you missed even a second of it. As a true fanatic of sci-fi (Andromedia Strain, Logan's Run, Clockwork Orange, 2001, 2010, Flatliners, Gattica, etc) I have to say, "what were they thinking?"

This film is without question one of the worst movies ever made, and other reviewers that gave this four or five stars for its cinematic prose and appreciation to fine electrifying cinematic cultism, need to get their head examined, as they as movie goers were on their own drug induced-kinetic stupor while watching it.

Written by James Cameron. Indeed, as bad as his help in rendering, yet again, the awful version that he threw together with Soderbergh of Solaris, and having Clooney play Mr. Klevin was disrespectful to Stanislaw Lem. Both, equally a waste of time, IMHO.

John Singleton, at the age of 23, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his debut film, Boyz N the Hood. The film stars Laurence Fishburne, Angela Basset, Ice Cube, and Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. in his first starring role in a feature film. Gooding plays Tre Styles, a teenager growing up in South Central Los Angeles. His father, Furious (Fishburne), is divorced and living away from Tre and his mother (Basset), but he's still involved in Tre's upbringing, teaching him the values of right and wrong and responsibility. Meanwhile, Tre's childhood buddies Ricky (Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (Ice Cube) are living their lives in terms of the epidemic of violence and poverty that has plagued their neighborhood. Ricky, a talented football player, strives to get a full athletic scholarship to college. If only his SAT scores were higher. Doughboy lives a life full of crime but still remains true to his friends. The obstacles that these three young men come across result in dire consequences, devastatingly avoidable and inevitable at the same time. Boyz N the Hood is a landmark film beyond its commercial success, presenting a portrait of South Central in the late '80s and early '90s as painted by Singleton (who grew up in that neighborhood), achieving accuracy and dramatic resonance in this story of at-risk youth. <I>--Shannon Gee</I>

5 out of 5 stars Best look at the hood to date.......2007-05-17

Everyone I have talked to who has seen this movie says the same thing; "That was a really good movie!". It is much more. This movie came out of John Singleton's personal experiences with racism and crime in South Central, like Spike Lee with "Do the Right Thing". But this movie was one of the first of many urban-crime films to come (i.e. New Jack City, Juice, Menace II Society, Dead Presidents). Ice Cube, a rapper at the time, made his film debut as Doughboy, the drug dealer who does the most crime on the streets on South Central. Cuba Gooding, Jr. also made his debut as Tre, a man whose father (Laurence Fishburne) teaches him how to be responsible and making the right choices. The performances were great, The rare Soundtrack had cool songs like Cube's "South Central" song and this movie is best of many crime films, not like the gangster films though.

Singleton just put together the perfect movie to depict his old neighborhood, it's just a shame that none of his recent work is as good as Boyz N The Hood. If you are a fan of gangster films, or just good movies in general, you will like Boyz N The Hood.

3 out of 5 stars a career deferred withers & dries.......2007-04-07

john singleton was in hisearly 20s when he directed this movie and was supposed to become one of the great directors; unfortunately he has done nothing in the nearly 20 years since to justify that early bit of over-praise. what we DO have here is a good but uneven debut feature drawn from the experiences its creative team had lived thru in growing up in the LA ghetto, highlighted by solid acting turns by laurence fishburne, cuba gooding, and especially morris chestnut. like so much of the african-american community, singleton seems to be an artist of unfulfilled promise. sad.

5 out of 5 stars The godfather of gangsta.......2007-01-18

This is definitely a monumental film. Boyz-in-the-Hood blew open the door for the director, several of the cast members, plus this particular genre.
Although it is a violent film, it's actually a story about family. A street-smart father (Furious) trying to raise his son (Tre) amid the extreme dangers of life in South Cental L.A.
I love the rapport that is established between the two. Furious is strict, perhaps overbearing, but only acts out of necessity. He is also very honest and involved in Tre's life in order to keep him out of trouble. I admire the tough questions Furious asks his son too, like "what do you know about sex?" or "what'd you use?" (such as condoms for safe sex).
Although this relationship if my favorite aspect, their are countless other great reasons to watch this movie. Like the chaotic but real look at urban life, where danger is constantly lurking. Or the enduring bonds that are formed between friends. The entire movie is packed with action, humor, and emotion.
Boyz-n-the Hood had a major impact on my life.

3 out of 5 stars BOYz N Da HOOD.......2007-01-10

this movie is a gangsta movie classic and a must have for any youth who grew up in the ninetys. it displays real street life growing up in south central LA and displays a very graphic tradgedy ending.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Urban Drama!.......2006-12-18

This movie was an absolute classic! It is a real and touching depiction of three young black men growing up in South Central Los Angeles. Tre Styles (Cuba Gooding Jr) is sent by his mother (Angela Bassett) to live with his father Furious Styles (Laurence Fishburne) after getting into a fight at school. Tre has a caring father who teaches him valuable life lessons while the situation for his buddies Ricky Baker and his half-brother Darren "Doughboy" Baker is very different. Ricky is a good, if not very bright, kid who is heavily favored by his mother (Tyra Ferrell) who has nothing but contempt and disparaging words for Doughboy. A few years later, we see that Tre (now played by Cuba Gooding Jr) is growing into a responsible young man with a bright future. Ricky (now played by Morris Chestnut) and Doughboy (now played by Ice Cube) are going in completely different directions. Ricky is a football star hoping that a college scholarship will get him out of "The Hood" while Doughboy is a shiftless small time drug dealer and gangbanger who is a walking time bomb. Ricky also happens to be the father of a toddler son. A violent and tragic turn of events eventually puts Furious' upbringing of Tre to the ultimate test.

Contrary to what many who haven't seen the movie may think, it isn't just about gangbanging. Many compare the numerous "hood" movies that came in later years to "Boyz" but those comparisons couldn't be further off the mark. Unlike the others which were basically capitalizing on the fascination with, and at times glorifying, thuggery and "hood" culture, "Boyz" actually had powerful messages not only about the senselessness of inner city violence and the need to stop it but about the importance of young black men having positive male figures in their lives. While many would write Doughboy off as just another worthless thug, you're actually left feeling sorry for him and understanding why he turned out the way he did. The first time I ever cried watching a movie (and I rarely do so to this day) was the climactic scene where Ricky's promising life is cut short and that is a testament to how well written and deep "Boyz" really is. Other unforgettable scenes are when Tre is threatened by the self-hating black cop and when he breaks down at Brandi's house out of frustration with the senseless violence around him. Trust me when I tell you that this one is different and well worth the price!

Why, you might ask, would Wes Craven direct a conventional biopic about Roberta Guaspari, a divorced mother of two who created an acclaimed music program in East Harlem's troubled school system? After all, Craven built his career on Freddy Krueger and the <I>Scream</I> trilogy, and you won't find razor-tipped gloves or a single drop of blood in <I>Music of the Heart</I>. All Craven has to do is provide a safe working environment for Meryl Streep (who earned an obligatory Oscar nomination), sublimate his deft directorial style, and surrender to the banalities of Pamela Gray's screenplay, which would've played more effectively on cable TV.

To be fair, <I>Music of the Heart</I> (partially inspired by the 1996 documentary <I>Small Wonders</I>) serves its purpose quite nicely. Streep is flawless in a non-showy role, and the story of Guaspari's celebrated violin training program provides the requisite rush of inner-city inspiration. As a fact-based companion to <I>Mr. Holland's Opus</I>, the film is less effective but similarly engaging; you'd have to be cold-hearted to dismiss it altogether. It's best when focusing on Guaspari's school program and the 10-year struggle to keep it alive; the drama falters when dealing half-heartedly with her tentative relationships, notably with a journalist (Aidan Quinn) who shies from commitment. And Craven? He seems content to direct by the numbers here, leaving inspiration on the screen while forfeiting his own. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

5 out of 5 stars A tear jerker, a learning experience and a message of hope. .......2007-06-08

Recommended for special education students along with LEAN ON ME and DANGEROUS MINDS and RADIO and others, Music of the Heart has a message that should be in demand in this nation seeking sense out of abuse and meyham and so on.
It is a message that a citizen can make a difference in a whole school system in a whole community for the good of education. This, inspite of the school systems own battles to end the program. And, the budget for the program was not traditional... it was affordable.
The price is right and so is the message... Buy one and give it to your local school.

4 out of 5 stars movie review.......2007-03-10

I enjoyed this movie a lot because I enjoy movies that are based on true life experiences. Watching how ordinary people touch the live of others; letting them know they can reach beyond thier circumstances and dream of a better life. Movies like this touch us because teachers and others give selflessly to those who otherwise might not be given the oppertunities to excell in life. They give those less fortunate an oppertunity to reach beyond thier circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie..........2007-03-08

If you're a fan of Meryl Streep, feel good movies and music movies, this is one you should see. Based on a true story, Meryl Streep plays a divorced mother of two looking for a way to get back on her feet. She finds out she can make a difference as she starts a violin class for students at an inner-city school. But it seems that just as it looks as though she will have a permanent place in the school, the funding for Arts is cut, and she, the students, parents and staff must find a way for her program to stick around.
