Amazon.com essential video
The film that officially signaled Disney's animation renaissance (following The Little Mermaid) and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself), Belle boldly takes her father's place, imprisoned in the Beast's gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters (the Beast's mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman. (The title song won the 1991 Best Song Oscar, and Menken's score scored a trophy as well.) The downright funniest song is "Gaston," a lout's paean to himself (including the immortal line, "I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting"). "Be Our Guest" is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage. Since Ashman's passing, animated musicals haven't quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit, sophistication, and pure joy. --David Kronke --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

ALL TIME FAV!!.......2007-05-12
you gotta love this movie, I always have and I got a great deal on Amazon and fast shipping too!!!
"Tale As Old As Time, Song As Old As Rhyme" ~ Belle And The Beast, Another Disney Classic.......2007-04-07
`Beauty and the Beast' `91 is yet another juggernaut of the animated Disney classics that were released in the `90's. The list included; `Aladdin' in `92, `Pocahontas' in '95 and `Mulan' in '98. It's a close call, but this one is possibly the best of the four with 'Aladdin' featuring the madcap voice of Robin Williams a close second.
`Beauty and the Beast' scores high marks in every category; storyline, character development, animation and cinematography, sound and music that says with you long after the final credits roll by. The only possible negative I can come up with about the release of this particular version is the inclusion of the song `To be Human Again.' It is rather redundant and definitely not equal to the caliber of the rest of the soundtrack. It's inclusion only serves to detract rather than enhance an otherwise perfectly done tale.
The Best of New Disney.......2007-04-05
What a movie, and what a set. You get the timeless tale of Belle and the Beast, and three versions of the film, in a great quaility set. It's worth owning whether you have kids or not. This is a must buy.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.......2007-03-23

When a mail-order apprentice witch (Angela Lansbury) is saddled with three sibling refugees from London during World War II, the outlook is grim. But the kids soon discover her secret and sign on for adventure in the name of England. With the aid of a magical bed, they track down her fraudulent headmaster (David Tomlinson) to find the spell that will aid the Allies. Fascinated that she has actually achieved results with his lessons, he joins forces. The quintet does battle with corrupt booksellers, animated-lion royalty, and, eventually, invading Germans. Songs include Lansbury's Oscar-nominated "The Age of Not Believing." This film is often compared to director Robert Stevenson's earlier effort, <I>Mary Poppins</I>, and for good reason. In addition to Tomlinson, the movies share a fondness for magic at the hands of a good woman, light romance with an understanding male, and wide-eyed children. Stevenson also graces both films with interaction between humans and animated animals. Disney is wise to play up that aspect on its box this time around as both the underwater ball and the subsequent island soccer match are the most visually interesting and appealing parts of the film. Adults may find the 1971-vintage mixing of actors and animation a bit creaky, but kids used to a variety of animation quality will find the action a hoot. Ages 4 and up. The movie has been recut several times but was restored to the original length of 139 minutes for its 30th anniversary in 2001. <I>--Kimberly Heinrichs</I>

Customer Reviews:
wonderful.......2007-05-13
I have seen the original movie release and this is the elongated version. It has scenes in it that ended up being cut for the theaters. I have always enjoyed this movie, but the elongated one is much more enjoyable
Fun fun fun!.......2007-05-10
I watched this for the first time the other day. It was pure fun. Such a great movie, felt like a wonderful escape from the real world. Funny, enjoyable and so original. I loved it, I can't believe I had never watched it!
Bedknobs and Broomsticks.......2007-05-10
Adding to my collection of Disney and upgrading at the same time.
A must-see!!!.......2007-04-10
I've always loved this movie...it's so imaginative, and the songs are lovely. I love the character of Eglantine Price, and Angela Landsbury does a wonderful job playing her. Two of the actors from Mary Poppins are also in this movie, playing Eglantine's correspondence school teacher Mr. Brown and one of the children. It's a great, great movie - one that parents will enjoy watching with their children. And the song "Portobello Road" will stick in your head for ages.
Back to my childhood!.......2007-03-14
I watched this movie when I was six years old, now after 32 years I can see it again and it was as magical, fun and beautiful as the first time. It's a Disney's Classic and it's a must own.maybe the animation and color of the movies nowdays is wonderful but disney classic animation movies are a treasure to save.

As <I>Murder, She Wrote</I> saunters through its sixth (of an eventual 12) season, star Angela Lansbury maintains her eternally buoyant and inquisitive air as Jessica Fletcher, professional writer and amateur sleuth. Though Jessica continued to investigate murders in her home town of Cabot Cove and elsewhere (in the worlds of high finance, opera, and voodoo, among other settings), this season began the practice of guest detective episodes, introduced by Jessica as either a story she wrote or a tale told by a friend, but starring a variety of quirky investigators: An ex-football player (Ken Howard, <I>The White Shadow</I>) paired with a clever poodle; a television crime-show producer who solved crime in real life (Diana Canova, <I>Soap</I>); a stout Irish detective (longtime character actor Pat Hingle); an abrasive homicide cop (Barry Newman, <I>Vanishing Point</I>); as well as recurring <I>Murder, She Wrote</I> characters like former jewel thief Dennis Stanton (Keith Michell) and British secret agent Michael Haggerty (Len Cariou). The producers were obviously hoping to use <I>Murder, She Wrote</I>'s popularity to spin-off new series, but nothing from this season took off and viewer resistance soon brought the practice to an end. Executives must have been surprised to discover that, though murder mysteries are plot-driven, this show's success depends heavily on the undeniable charm of star Lansbury. Still, these one-off episodes are of a consistent quality with Lansbury's, and viewers open to variety will enjoy them just as much. The rest of the season features the usual astonishing array of guests, including movie stars old (Donald O'Connor, <I>Singin' in the Rain</I>) and recent (Elliott Gould, <I>The Long Goodbye</I>), television stalwarts (Shirley Jones, <I>The Partridge Family</I>; Jerry Stiller, <I>The King of Queens</I>; Doris Roberts, <I>Everyone Loves Raymond</I>; Kevin Tighe, <I>Battlestar Galactica</I>; and Gavin McLeod, <I>The Love Boat</I>), and D-list celebrities to die for (Dack Rambo, Morgan Brittany, Susan Anton, and more). <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Customer Reviews:
MSW - 6th Season.......2007-06-13
Another outstanding season of one of the best shows ever. The writing is still good and the guest actors are always top notch.
MURDER, SHE WROTE.......2007-06-09
I LOVE THIS SERIES. I HAVE SIX SEASONS SO FAR AND WILL PURCHASE THE REST AS THEY COME OUT. JESSICA COULD BE THE AUNT YOU LOVE TO GO VISIT WHO IS SO INTERESTING. SHE IS SOMEONE YOU CAN LOOK UP TO AND WILL ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING, EVEN IN THE FCE OF ADVERSITY.
Murder, She Wrote - The Complete Sixth Season .......2007-05-27
I had excellent service and got it earlier than I expected! Wonderful service ... keep up the "Great Work"!
Continuing fantastic.......2007-05-19
The sixth season is just as great as the first five. Though this time several episodes are introduced by Jessica and she does not have a key role, this change is refreshing, especially when one of the characters, Dennis, comes in as a private investigator, reformed from his gem stealing days.
The set provides hours of enjoyment for the whole family.
I can't wait until season 7 comes out.
ANGELA FANS BEWARE!.......2007-05-18
Just over half of the episodes in this season star Alngela Landsbury as Jessica Fletcher. Although I like Ken Howard, which was the only exception for me, I did not enjoy the episodes without J.B. I thought that perhaps they did it because she had obligations outside of the show at the time, but apparently the producers were "trying something new." IDIOTS! Don't fix it if it ain't broken!!!

Danny Kaye spoofs <I>Robin Hood</I> and <I>Scaramouche</I> in this inventive slapstick swashbuckler. Portraying the clownish but good-hearted entertainer Hawkins, he infiltrates the court of the corrupt Basil Rathbone (up to his usual brand of cruel villainy) disguised as the legendary king of jesters, Giacomo. After a court sorceress hypnotizes Hawkins into believing he is also a legendary assassin, Hawkins has more identities than he can keep straight, and Kaye zips back and forth between them at, literally, a snap of the fingers. Comic highlights include a wonderful sword fight with Rathbone in which he constantly switches identities, and the classic "chalice from the palace/vessel with pestle" wordplay as Hawkins plays "hide the poison" and forgets where it is. With comely Glynis Johns as his spy-in-arms love interest, Angela Lansbury as the scheming princess, and Mildred Natwick as the dotty spellcaster, this is Danny Kaye at his comic best. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>
Customer Reviews:
Court Jester.......2007-06-11
Danny Kaye's ultimate best film. It is funny, romantic and empathic. He wants to be a hero type, but ends up hiding the baby King from the bad guy. He is enchanted by a court witch who convinces him he is a true hero with the snap of anyone's fingers. The most memorable line is "Get it? Got it? Good" -- Danny did his own sword fight, but the villian was in reality a great sword fighter and would not fight Danny when he was goofing off. --- A MUST SEE MOVIE
Prep for Engineering Final Exam.......2007-04-29
In 1958 I had to take an exam in Engineering Drawing from 2-5pm on a friday. I wanted to take my mind off of the exam in the morning so I went to the theatre to catch a matinee. It was the "Court Jester". It was the funniest movie I ever saw, and while taking the exam, the proctor was forced to move me into an adjacent room as I couldn't stop chuckling during the exam. I "aced" the test and was forever grateful to Danny Kay, Glynnis Johns (who was beautiful), Basil Rathbone ( the great) and Angela Lansbury who I forever after had a difficulty in seeing her in later films as a sweet lovable old lady.
Danny Kaye is the best!.......2007-04-10
This movie is just as great as I remember it from when I was a little kid!
My mom and I, every Saturday would watch old movies on tv, and my favorites were always Danny Kaye movies, this one is by far my favorite!
Danny plays the best part as the jester, his style is like no other!
I recommend this movie to anyone who wants a lighthearted laugh!
The Court Jester.......2007-03-28
Danny Kaye is brilliant in this movie. His "Vessel with the Pessle" routine is one of the best. Danny Kaye is at his best. The midgets in the
movie offset his humor.
A wonderful addition to your collection.......2007-03-23
What fun! Danny Kaye, with music by his wife, Sylvia Fine, is in "Fine" form in this classic. Danny plays Giacomo, the "King of Jesters," as he infiltrates the corrupt king's court in an effort to restore the rightful heir to the throne. Along the way, there are many hilarious scenes and when they get to the "chalice from the palace and the vessel with the pestle," you'll roll on the floor laughing. The supporting cast of Basil Rathbone, Glynis Johns, Angela Lansbury, and the great character actress Mildred Natwick only add to the fun. I define a "classic" as a movie that can be watched over and over and be enjoyed with every viewing. The Court Jester certainly more than meets that criteria.

There are two audiences for this DVD compilation of the first season of the enormously popular TV series <I>Murder, She Wrote</I>. The first enjoys the classic pleasures of the pre-forensics "whodunit," stories in which murder was not so much a crime as a logic puzzle; the joy here lay in how skillfully a writer could misdirect you. <I>Murder, She Wrote</I>--in which mystery writer Jessica Fletcher constantly stumbles across dead bodies in every setting imaginable, from a San Francisco drag show to a football field--doesn't have the elegance of an Agatha Christie or Rex Stout mystery, but the show was efficient at laying out its clues and cunningly used the audience's familiarity with television itself (the relative star power of the guests, the need for a dramatic high point before every commercial break, etc.) to mislead and manipulate. And of course Angela Lansbury, as Fletcher, was an ideal television presence: Warm and friendly, but with just a hint of the fierce, steely will she revealed in <I>The Manchurian Candidate</I>. Lansbury drove the show through an impressive twelve seasons (for which she received twelve Emmy nominations), plus multiple TV movies after its cancellation.
The other audience for <I>Murder, She Wrote: The Complete First Season</I> consists of viewers for whom names like Bert Convy, Dack Rambo, and Barbara Babcock send waves of guilty pleasure down their spines. The promotional materials for this boxed set make much ado about brief appearances by stars-to-be like Andy Garcia (who appears briefly as "1st White Tough" in the pilot TV movie) and Joaquin Phoenix (who's around 10 years old and still going by the name Leaf), but every single episode is a festival of B-, C-, and Z-grade celebrities from the 1970s and '80s: Claude Akins, Tom Bosley, Jeff Conaway, David Doyle, Samantha Eggar, Lynda Day George, Morgan Brittany, Belinda Montgomery, Gabe Kaplan, and Lyle Waggoner, just to name a handful. Some of these names may be forgotten, but their faces (and scenery-chewing performances) will spark a Proustian rush of television memories. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

In English or Portuguese?.......2007-06-14
I loved the show and still do in its reruns. But Season 1 is a gift for my-87-year-old dad for Fathers Day this weekend.
Amazon says this DVD set is in Portuguese. From the reviewers, it seems more likely it's in English. Here's hoping Amazon is wrong. I neither speak nor understand Portuguese.
Enjoying Murder She Wrote - 1st season.......2007-06-08
We are enjoying watching each episode. Even though we saw them when they first appeared on TV, it's fun to relive these episodes.
So bad it is good... sometimes.......2007-05-31
My daughter and I watch this show at midnight every Saturday night. It is our opportunity to bond as together we make fun of what is one the worst television shows I have ever watched. Yes, I know I am going to be stomped on by the many fans of this horror but I can't lie. I wasn't a big television watcher back in the 80's so if this is an example of great TV from then, I can only assume that TV was awful (or should I say offal).
The DVD set includes the pilot. How did this show ever get past the pilot? The inane plot, the overacting of Bert Convy and Arthur Hill, the underacting of Brian Keith, the lame attempts at comedy, and the incredibly doltish ending. It also creates a conundrum for the script writers as J.B. Fletcher gets her start when her nephew (who has a recurring role in the series) secretly sends her first manuscript off to the publishers. Future episodes, however, make J.B. out to be a modern day Agatha Christie with a boatload of novels and new ones on the way all the time (although how she finds the time to write a novel with all the murders going on around her is beyond me). And speaking about all the murders, how could one person possibly know so many murder victims? It's frightening how often murders occur around this woman. If I found out that J.B. Fletcher was visiting my town, I would certainly head off on a vacation immediately!
It's hard to pick out the worst episode of the actual first season but probably the last one, "Funeral at Fifty-Mile" could qualify although "Murder to a Jazz Beat" could give it a run for its money. As to the least worst, "Death Takes a Curtain Call" with William Conrad playing a major in the Russian army wasn't bad. And there was actually one good episode in the season. "Footnote to Murder" with Paul Sand was actually quite funny and the mystery itself wasn't bad. Sand does a great job playing the drunken poet Horace Lynchfield. But these are the exceptions. The typical episode features a confused plot performed by actors who once were famous (Cesar Romero, Jose Ferrer, Herschel Bernardi), who were never famous, or were on the D-List at the time. The best part of the episodes is the opening credits when you can play "try to recognize the name". The worst part is the usually incredibly stupid joke that is inserted at the end of most episodes. They are generally not funny but more the type of joke that makes you roll your eyes in disbelief.
OK, I am willing to admit that Angela Lansbury is probably the reason that this show was on for so long. She generally plays the character of J.B. Fletcher quite well in spite of the terrible scripts that she must endure. Lansbury is a fine actor and she deserved much better than the words she is forced to regurgitate but she does a good job nonetheless. In fact, Lansbury keeps this from being a one-star rating, as tempted as I am to give it only one star.
Anyway, in spite of all this, I can recommend this show as a guilty pleasure. It is so bad that it is good (well, sometimes).
Murder, She Wrote - the complete first season.......2007-04-10
I find the product to be of excellent quality and can't wait for my next shipment of Season Two and Four.
There was a bit of a mix up when you tried to process my original order and I found the reason to be - because of the little center roller button on my computer's mouse. I had inserted my name and the date of expiry in the appropriate places but when I tried to scroll down - I forgot that when you use the button to scroll down, it changes the name or number inserted in the above place. That was why I got an e-mail from you saying the bank didn't agree with my date of expiry. However, I was able to correct it on the order and now, everything is okay!!

Murder, She Wrote - The Complete Season.......2007-03-31
My husband and I watch one program each evening and really enjoy seeing Angela Lansbury solve each case. As senior citizens, it is refreshing to watch these mysteries again after so many years - no profanity or nudity, etc. We have bought the next two seasons and plan to buy the last three.

Elvis Presley's seventh film was the first of his "Hawaii trilogy" (including Girls! Girls! Girls! and <I>Paradise, Hawaiian Style</I>). While its story is daft--the King has just been released from his Army posting in Italy and returned to the islands, where he's trying to avoid working in his father's fruit business--the music is not: "Blue Hawaii," "Almost Always True," and the beautiful "Can't Help Falling in Love." Angela Lansbury plays Elvis's mother, who can't seem to get through to him. Directed by the star's frequent collaborator, Norman Taurog (<I>G.I. Blues</I>). <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Season 5 finds <I>Murder, She Wrote</I>'s intrepid Jessica Fletcher in fine sleuthing form, and venturing farther afield from Cabot Cove--a good thing, since at the rate the murders have been happening, that town would be nearly cleaned out. Some of the best episodes take place in more exotic locales like New York (dead man on the street, wearing just one shoe), Montana (a publishing convention gone horribly wrong) and West Virginia (two whistle-blowers at a coal company found gruesomely murdered). Angela Lansbury sparkles with determination and bonhomie, hitting her stride and then some. Jessica's own life backstory is even filled out tantalizingly, especially in the episode "The Last Flight of the Dixie Damsel," in which an investigation is launched into a mysterious cargo plane that is linked, she learns to her horror, to her late husband. The series' other delight is watching for cameos by stars of a certain age, and this season doesn't disappoint, with appearances by Roddy McDowall, Shelley Fabares, and Dinah Shore--but also some up-and-comers like Megan Mullally (proof positive that the <I>Will & Grace</I> whine was a put-on) and future satirist Bill Maher. Extras include a fresh and beguiling interview with Lansbury, who clearly relishes the gift the role of Fletcher was in the latter part of her acting career, as well as other members of the cast and crew. <I>--A.T. Hurley</I>

Good Old Murder She Wrote!.......2007-06-05
When I'm feeling stressed from a tough day at work, I watch these great old "Murder She Wrote" episodes. They are entertaining and seem warm and fuzzy in spite of the subject matter. Angela Lansbury is like a reassuring old friend. This season is recorded on much better quality dvds than the previous seasons, which gave me a lot of trouble. You can see and feel the superior quality of this set. I managed to play the whole season without a single problem, which makes me very happy.
most excellent.......2007-05-14
as usual, love every episode. am so glad I will be able to watch them anytime i want to.
Great for family viewing nights.......2007-05-13
Once the kids are old enough to watch murder shows (nice discreet no-blood-or-gore types), you can't do better than Murer, She Wrote. Similar to the old English murder mysteries. Love it!

It is awesome. The Queen of mystery reigns supreme!
AWESOME!.......2007-04-19
another great season...as expected! I am so glad the production company went to one sided disks....i suppose after the complaints they had no choice. I love Angela Landsbury and her JB character is so great!!

Description
Times are hard in 1846 London and one must make do. So Nellie Lovett adds something extra to the meat pies she peddles on Fleet Street. The secret ingredient: freshly murdered victims of her partner in crime, barber Sweeney Todd. Composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim refashions a macabre tale into a musical masterwork in this dazzling performance of the 1979 Broadway hit originally staged by Harold Prince. In her Tony-winning role (one of eight the show earned, including Best Musical), Angela Lansbury plays Nellie. George Hearn turns his stage role of twisted Sweeney into an Emmy-winning triumph. The score coils around itself in ever-tightening spirals. The lines ripple with black humor and madness. Enter Sweeney's tonsorial parlor. Attend the tale.
Amazon.com essential video
Stephen Sondheim's Victorian horror thriller <I>Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street</I> is generally considered his greatest work, macabre but darkly humorous with a viscerally powerful score that has found a home both on Broadway and in opera houses. George Hearn (who replaced Len Cariou of the original Broadway cast) plays the title character, a wronged man whose lust for revenge drives him to murder (an 18th-century legend who has been traced to a real-life barber), and Angela Lansbury plays his partner in crime, Mrs. Lovett, who finds a practical business use for Todd's victims. This combination of horror and humor is echoed in Sondheim's score: brooding menace ("The Ballad of Sweeney Todd," "My Friend"), achingly beautiful ballads ("Johanna," "Not While I'm Around"), clever puns ("A Little Priest"), coloratura arias ("Green Finch and Linnet Bird"), and intricate choral and ensemble numbers.
Continuing a fortuitous tradition of capturing the Sondheim legacy on video recordings, this performance was filmed before a live audience in Los Angeles during the 1982 national tour. Almost 20 years later, Hearn returned to the role opposite Patti LuPone in an acclaimed concert production. But <I>Sweeney Todd</I> is an especially compelling experience in this 1982 version, complete with the clever staging tricks (e.g., the barber's chair) and as close to the original cast as we're likely to see. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>
Customer Reviews:
Film record of the stage production.......2007-02-01
Halfway between movie and stage is the filming of a stage production. It is difficult to capture the intimacy and immediacy of theater on film, difficult to exercise the kind of control that film offers on stage. This is a filming of a live stage presentation. It looks reasonably good and sound quality seems fine. The major selling point is Angela Lansbury's fine performance as the demented Mrs. Lovett. It is a wonderful performance and considering how many wonderful performances on stage are lost forever, it is nice to see this one preserved. A lifetime of playing villainesses seems to free her to approach the part with utter abandon. The musical itself is excellent and beautifully done. The biggest concern I have is that with a price this high, the DVD clearly was made as cheaply as possible with a cheap cardboard container and absolutely no extras of any kind. I do not think that there is anything that would justify the cost and, while I am pleased to have the film, I am disgusted at the inordinately high price charged. It is a crime to make so little effort in simply reproducing a film whose costs were quite limited in the first place, packaging it as cheaply as possible and then charging top dollar for the final product. It is really shameful.
Sweeny Todd.......2007-01-28
Sweeney Todd is a wonderfully dark romp through broadway. It follows the story of Benjamin Barker, a barber who was jilted by the judge and beetle of old time London and soon seeks revenge. A wonderful performance by Angela Lansbury as Nellie Lovett and Len Cariou as Sweeny Todd.
The not-such-a-demon barber of fleet street.......2007-01-11
It is easy to see why Angela Lansbury won a Tony for this peformance. The sets, scenery and costumes are wonderful. The cast is quite effective, but at times it is very hard to distinguish some of the lyrics in the larger production numbers. A must see for anyone that is aware that Tim Burton is going to bring his own unique take on this story to life.
Sweeney Todd.......2007-01-10
Love it! Wonderful recording of this musical. A must for musical libraries.

Having not really seen this until I bought both the first and second seasons for my wife, I was pleasantly surprised by it. Makes for great Sunday afternoon viewing. Angela is very entertaining and the "I can't believe that they looked like that" factor of the guest stars is always good for a laugh.

LADY LANSBURY.......2007-01-20
MURDER SHE WROTE is one of the most successful mystery shows on t.v., earning a thirteen season run and only cancelled due to demographic advertising concerns. While it surely is pretty hokey at times and sometimes predictable, this second season shows us what made the series so popular: Angela Lansbury. This regal actress proved someone over the age of 30 could capture audiences with her sly portrayal of mystery writer J.B. Fletcher, a pigheaded writer who finds herself involved in mysteries in Cabot Cove and on her other globetrotting excursions. Each episode gives us well known guest stars as suspects in various kinds of murder, with the witty JB figuring out whodunit. Lansbury is perfect for the role and even though she was denied an Emmy in her thirteen seasons, she is the sole reason for this series' success. She also gave roles to some of Hollywood's brightest stars from the 40s, 50s and 60s: Van Johnson, Cyd Charrise, Ann Blyth, to name a few. The formula worked and I always found her mysteries entertaining.

With hairy warts, a stern-looking unibrow and one extremely protruding buck-tooth, Nanny McPhee is a wonderfully comedic substitute for Mary Poppins in this entertaining family fantasy. By loosely adapting Christianna Brand's <I>Nurse Matilda</I> children's books of the 1960s, Oscar®-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) has also given herself the plum role of Nanny McPhee, who can tame even the most unruly children with a tap of her magic walking stick. Her latest challenge is the bratty brood of a recent widower Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), who's under pressure to find a new wife or lose his much-needed allowance from wealthy Aunt Adelaide (a tailor-made role for Angela Lansbury). His love for scullery maid Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald) remains unspoken as he wincingly woos the eagerly merry widow Mrs. Quickly (Celia Imrie), but Brown's raucous rugrats have a plan to make things right, especially after they've come under the benevolent influence of Nanny McPhee, whose peculiar brand of discipline works wonders for everyone involved. Both quintessentially British and universally appealing, this wildly colorful comedy (thanks to a bold palette of costume and production design) was capably directed by Kirk Jones, whose appreciation for comic actors was equally apparent in his critically acclaimed 1998 comedy Waking Ned Devine. With just a hint of darkness to offset the whimsy, Nanny McPhee offers a splendid match of director, cast and material, guaranteed to please Wallace & Gromit fans and anyone else with a taste for British zaniness. --Jeff Shannon

Loved it.......2007-06-21
This was a fun movie to watch.
Not as good as it looks .......2007-06-15
At 99 minutes, Nanny Mcphee is a light and ultimately forgettable children's film. It had great potential, including a cast of the British luminaries Colin Firth and Emma Thompson, and a good deal of charm and heart, but ultimately failed to deliver on two of its most important attributes: plot and the Nanny. Nanny Mcphee, as a modernized, Willy-Wonka version of Mary Poppins, fails miserably, the worst part being that she's actually frightening. Mary Poppins, as played by Julie Andrews, was strict and firm and occasionally a little frightening, but NEVER cruel. Emma Thompson's nanny is not averse to bringing one of the children to near-death to make sure that they get the point. By the time the little boy has been lifted away from the boiling oil, the children have got the point: Nanny McPhee is boss, and so has the audience; we don't like her. As a "comedic" replacement for Mary Poppins, Nanny McPhee is unfunny, ugly, and burdened with a ridiculous buck tooth and a decidedly odd manner. She is mysterious rather than magical, inhuman rather than "practically perfect", and the plot has the vague feeling of something stretched over too little material. There is a good deal of charm, mostly provided by the children carrying out a series of predictable but highly amusing pranks to drive their prospective step-mother away and by a really beautiful love story that develops in the last 5-10 minutes of the film, and great cinematography, but this only partially cancels out the genuinely creepy parts and the frothy lack of plot. In the end, this is a decent family film, but hardly a classic.
Enchanting.......2007-05-20
`Nanny McPhee' is charming to the last. The story starts with the Brown household in chaos. Mr. Brown, a widower (in an earnest bumbling performance from Collin Firth) is a breadwinner who hardly carves out any time for his children. Smart, but not wise, the children look upon every hired nanny as a nuisance; one they find endless ways to turn in her apron in an extraordinarily short amount of time. At wits end, he consults the nanny agency for the last time, but, finally, no one will work for him. That is until independent nanny, Nanny McGhee (a marvelous Emma Thompson), pops up (literally) at his door. Spellbound, she brings some new order to roost, pronouncing her wishes to the children and using her magical walking stick to enforce consequences on their self-willed ways. In the meantime, strict Aunt Adelaide (featuring illustrious Angela Lansberry--from blonde bombshell to super sleuth to [here] indomitable matriarch) will cut off his allowance if he doesn't marry by the end of the month. It seems also having Auntie's way, he will have to give up one of his children to her. Rashly, he chooses Mrs. Quickly (played with comic wickedness by Celia Imrie), even though his preference for Evangeline, (Beautiful Kelly McDonald) a servant. With five lessons to learn, Nanny McPhee warns, "If you don't want me, but you need me, I'll stay, but when you want me, but no longer need me, I will have to go."
Such enchanted development and straightforward mischief make `Nanny McPhee' a shelf-worthy family movie. Visually, they color every scene beautifully to accentuate a fun family film. (Based on 'Nurse Matilda,' a children's book serial by Christianna Brand. Screenplay by Emma Thompson.) Shakespearean actor, Derek Jacobi, joins an endearing cast in this lovable children's romp.
Weird, chilly, bad messages.......2007-04-30
When you know the plot of the movie before you see it, they'd better do good things with the characters. But here, they don't.
Strange-looking Nanny McPhee has to teach the kids to be good and get the hero married before the nasty Aunt Adelaide cuts off the family allowance, and--what was that? Before the allowance is cut off?
I'm amazed that this movie has done so well. In America, land of the self-made person, you'd think a goal of getting someone else to pay for your way of life would be, at the least, unappealing. Even in Victorian times, you didn't HAVE to produce 7 children you couldn't feed. And then, maybe if Brown (Colin Firth's character) had fewer children, or a smaller house, or did away with one or two of the household staff, his salary at the morgue would have been sufficient. (He works at the morgue. Ha. Ha.)
Since the powerful and good Nanny is so strange-looking, I thought this might be a movie about inner beauty, but no. As the children learn Nanny's 5 lessons, she gets less ugly, until at the end she is lovely Emma Thompson. This reflects their inner change, or maybe it just means that ugly is bad, after all.
There are some great things about this film, such as the surreal sets which tell us not to take anything seriously, or the normally lovely and classy Celia Imrie as a vulgar strumpet. (Just as there's no person as horrid as a good one gone bad, there's somehow no better "bad girl" than a naturally classy one.)
The ultimate change in Mary Poppins--despite her magical powers-- occurred when Mr. Banks himself realized he had to prioritize his family. Colin Firth never has any kind of personality change, and any change that happens comes from someone else doing a rescue: Nanny McPhee, Aunt Adelaide, or the oldest son. If I can't root for the main character, why would I want to watch?
Not a lot of laughs, confusing and conflicting messages, not anything I want to see again.
Certainly worth buying.......2007-04-14
I think this should be a favorite for any age! Especially if you like the "Lemonity Snicket" kind of weird feel to a show. (Its a good weird though!)
