<I>Ocean's Eleven</I> improves on 1960's Rat Pack original with supernova casting, a slickly updated plot, and Steven Soderbergh's graceful touch behind the camera. Soderbergh reportedly relished the opportunity "to make a movie that has no desire except to give pleasure from beginning to end," and he succeeds on those terms, blessed by the casting of George Clooney as Danny Ocean, the title role originated by Frank Sinatra. Fresh out of jail, Ocean masterminds a plot to steal $163 million from the seemingly impervious vault of Las Vegas's Bellagio casino, not just for the money but to win his ex-wife (Julia Roberts) back from the casino's ruthless owner (Andy Garcia). Soderbergh doesn't scrimp on the caper's comically intricate strategy, but he finds greater joy in assembling a stellar team (including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and Carl Reiner) and indulging their strengths as actors. The result is a film that's as smooth as a silk suit and just as stylish. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

nice to have all the ocean series good entertainment for a rainy day for myself and guests

4 out of 5 stars Have you ever watched a film where you wanted the bad guys to win?.......2007-06-01

I have trouble calling this a remake, because it doesn't share much in common with the `rat pack' original except the name of the lead character and that it is a casino heist. Actually, this is a better film than its namesake, apart from the fact that the cast of the original was filled with entertainment legends.

Director Soderbergh takes a vacation from serious filmmaking with this film, which on his resume is something of a lark. Everyone seems to be having a good time and it is clear that the actors enjoyed making this film. The overhauled screenplay pops with snappy dialogue, riddled with deadpan humor and a decent, though somewhat far fetched plot. It has a little of the whimsical feel of `The Sting', though the screenplay isn't as strong. A crew of professional thieves plans to knock over three casinos on a fight night by raiding the impregnable vault that serves all three. The plan is elaborate, full of high tech wizardry, daring deceptions and acrobatic stunts. The caper runs into more than the normal amount of foul ups, but our devious team of burglars is always up to the task of working around the glitches.

The cast is very solid. George Clooney is perfectly cast as the brainchild of the scheme. He is dapper, macho and smooth with a sardonic wit that keeps the film's tone serious yet light. Brad Pitt plays the always eating Rusty, who is really the brains behind the operation, coordinating it flawlessly. Except for `The Mexican', this is much lighter material than Pitt usually tackles, yet he gives a suave performance seeming very comfortable with his character. Despite the fact that this is an ensemble cast, Pitt carries a lot of the weight and makes the story as close to believable as could be possible given its improbable nature.

Don Cheadle continues to impress, rendering a terrific demolitions expert. His cockney accent is great and with this part Cheadle shows once again what a terrific character actor he is. In a little twist of irony, Cheadle plays an analogous part in this film to that played by Sammy Davis, Jr. in the original, and he also played Sammy in the TV movie entitled `The Rat Pack'. Poor Andy Garcia has the thankless task of playing the heavy in a tongue-in-cheek film, but he does a marvelous job. Matt Damon plays the rookie, giving the character a charming naiveté and a mischievous bent. Julie Roberts is nothing more than a throw in, with a minor role as Ocean's ex-wife.

If you don't take this film too seriously, you are in for an entertaining evening. It is smartly done without too much melodrama, and provides just enough suspense and realism to keep it from being a farce.

4 out of 5 stars stealing from a casino....crazy!.......2007-04-30

George Clooney plays Danny Ocean. Danny just got out of prison for a mistake he made 5 years ago. Along with that mistake, he lost his wife. Coming out of prison doesn't deter him from crime. He immediately rounds up 10 men to help him steal from a vault that stores money from 3 casinos. This is a big and dangerous mission. There has been 3 attempts to rob the casinos and none of them have been successful.

In the midst of their planning and training, an tidbit of information comes to light. The owner of these casinos is Terry Benedict (Garcia). That's not the important part. The important part is that Terry's current girlfriend is Tess (Roberts). Tess is Danny's ex-wife. So the question is...is Danny doing this for the money or is he doing this for his ex-wife? Of course, the gang is upset as it puts the mission in jeopardy.

Nonetheless, the mission continues with some adjustments. The question is will Ocean and his gang succeed with the mission?

I have to say that *Ocean's Eleven* is one of the best heist film that I've seen in recent years. I may not have agreed with the selection of actors but I do have to say that the chemistry between them was great.

<I>Pay It Forward</I> is a multi-level marketing scheme of the heart. Beginning as a seventh-grade class assignment to put into action an idea that could change the world, young Trevor McKinney (Haley Joel Osment) comes up with a plan to do good deeds for three people who then by way of payment each must do good turns for three other people. These nine people also must pay it forward and so on, ad infinitum. If successful, the resulting network of do-gooders ought to comprise the entire world. Trevor's attempts to get the ball rolling include befriending a junkie (James Caviezel) and trying to set up his recovering-alcoholic mother (Helen Hunt) with his burn-victim teacher (Kevin Spacey), who posed the assignment.

While this could have turned into unmitigated schmaltz, the acting elevates this film to mitigated schmaltz. By turns powerful and measured, the performances of Spacey, Hunt, and Osment can't make up for the many missteps in a screenplay that sanitizes the look of the lower-middle class and expects us to believe that homeless alcoholics and junkies speak in the elevated manner of grad students. (Can that really be Angie Dickinson as Hunt's dispossessed mother? Yes, it is!) The germ of the story is a good one, though, and one may wonder how it would have been handled by the likes of Frank Capra, who could balance sentiment with humor. But clearly Capra would never have let the ending of his version to take the nosedive into cliché and pathos that director Mimi Leder has allowed in this film. More than a few viewers will also recognize that Leder has blatantly borrowed her final image from <I>Field of Dreams</I>, where its intended effect was more keenly and honestly felt. <I>--Jim Gay</I>

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2007-05-21

Wouldn't it be great if we could all think this way? Excellent movie, with a positive message. I would highly recommend this for anyone, especially high school/college students.

5 out of 5 stars The dream is to make a difference... to change the world to a better place.......2007-05-21

The movie starts with a seventh grade teacher played by Kevin Spacey challenging a group of social studies students to come up with a plan that helps change the world to a much better place. The words are challenging, inspiring... the students are surprised,

One student is not only inspired to try but he believes that it is possible, and comes up with a plan to do good deeds for three people, who, rather than return the favor, must pay it forward by helping another three individuals.

The seventh grade student Trevor McKinney, played by Haley Joel Osment is up to something. As the number of people helping each other multiplies... one helps three, these three, each help another three... now nine help three each... and so on... one day the Earth would be populated with people in search of solutions.

Trevor comes from a broken home, alcoholic parents, a homeless grandmother, and a mother who holds two jobs to survive. So, he is left alone for long periods of time to consider and delve into his project.

To start the project, he chooses a homeless junkie, played by James Caviezel, and takes him home to feed and put a roof over his head. Imagine the shock of his mother, brilliantly played by Helen Hunt, when she finds this homeless person living in her home.

So... she goes to school to confront the teacher who planted such a crazy idea in her child's mind and meets the teacher, who is a burn-victim. The encounter between these two is simply... magnificent.

She is a recovering alcoholic who attends AA meetings. He is a burn victim, bottled up inside a disfigured body, who refuses to take the necessary risks to plunge into living his own life... at an emotional level.

For his good deed project, Trevor decides that his next two selections will be... none other than his mother and his professor, and he sets them up to initiate a relationship.

The actors are so powerful that they turn this story into a magnificent agent of change classic, for we are left pondering if we too... should become a part of this movie and attempt to help those in need in search for a better world.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-05-19

This is great and witty movie. It really make's you change the way you view and percive the world. The whole idea of "paying it forward" make you help tree people and then those tree people help other tree people which makes it total of nine and so on. Deffinetly recomended.

Julia Ormond faced one of the great challenges of her career when she tried to re-create Audrey Hepburn's title role in the 1995 remake of 1954's <I>Sabrina</I>. Happily, Ormond performed admirably, and while she may not have the same gamine charm of Hepburn, she makes the role her own. In fact, her transformation from mousy girl to sophisticated young woman is actually more dramatic in this updated version. The basic plot is the same--chauffeur's daughter falls in love with the son of the rich household, only to be wooed away by the older brother for business purposes--but it has been entertainingly modernized: The head of the Larrabee household is the strong matriarch (Nancy Marchand); Sabrina goes to Paris to work with a photographer instead of going to cooking school (although that means the wonderful "new egg" scene of the original had to be ditched); David's (Greg Kinnear) character has been toned down and made more sympathetic; and Humphrey Bogart's revolutionary plastic has become the flattest TV screen ever made. Lauren Holly does a fine job playing Elizabeth Tyson, David's fiancée. If you watch this for its own worth--instead of comparing it to the original--this will prove to be a terrific lighthearted romantic comedy. <I>--Jenny Brown</I>

...but not as good as the original. I think everyone did a great job in it and you will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars The reason I went to Paris...........2007-05-29

I love, love, love this movie. Julia is beautiful and Harrison does an amazing job, far from his usual role of treasure hunter. If this remake doesn't get you then the music will, it is a romantic shiny movie and I cry every time I watch it. Yes, I am a girlie girl. Then their Sting, ahhhh, "In the Moonlight."

I heart this movie.

4 out of 5 stars second version.......2007-05-28

Wanted this copy which I keep with the older version of Sabrina played with Humpry Bogart and they are both extremely good like to compare both copies at times.

5 out of 5 stars A new Classic........2007-04-25

Unfortunately, I have not seen the classic version of this movie yet. In fact, I didn't even know it was a re-make.

It's an early 90's rags to riches, love story. Like Pretty Woman without the hooker part. I feel that Julia Ormond had terrific chemistry with Harrison Ford. It even made me have little flutters when I anticipated a kiss.

I love this movie!

4 out of 5 stars A fun movie.......2007-04-13

The basic story is that the Chauffeurs daughter Sabrina falls in love with playboy David Larrabee. She tries to kills herself and is sent to Paris. When she returns as a mature woman David suddenly takes an interest in her. This would be great but David is engaged to another woman and this other woman brings with her a very sweet business opportunity for the Larrabee Industries run by elder brother Linus. Linus not a man to let a business opportunity pass him by because of his brother's female distractions sets out to distract the object of David's recent affections. Of course things start to go wrong when Linus develops feelings for Sabrina...

While I prefer the original I still think this version is a great movie. My main problem with it is that the younger brother isn't really good looking enough. I can see him being a playboy but honestly if I can't imagine anyone in their right mind choosing that Greg Kinnear over Harrison Ford. Did you see that guy when he was younger? Indiana Jones? Han Solo? Also when you watch this movie again it feels more dated than the original. That having been said this is a great feel good movie.

When it comes down to naming the best Western of all time, the list usually narrows to three completely different pictures: John Ford's <I>The Searchers</I>, Howard Hawks's <I>Red River</I>, and Hawks's <I>Rio Bravo</I>. About the only thing they all have in common is that they all star John Wayne. But while <I>The Searchers</I> is an epic quest for revenge and <I>Red River</I> is a sweeping cattle-drive drama ("Take 'em to Missouri! Yeeee-hah!"), <I>Rio Bravo</I> is on a much more modest scale. Basically, it comes down to Sheriff John T. Chance (Wayne), his sobering-up alcoholic friend Dude (Dean Martin), the hotshot new kid Colorado (Ricky Nelson), and deputy-sidekick Stumpy (Walter Brennan), sittin' around in the town jail, drinkin' black cofee, shootin' the breeze, and occasionally, singin' a song. Hawks--who, like his pal Ernest Hemingway, lived by the code of "grace under pressure"--said he made <I>Rio Bravo</I> as a rebuke to <I>High Noon</I>, in which sheriff Gary Cooper begged for townspeople to help him. So, Hawks made Wayne's Sheriff Chance a consummate professional--he may be getting old and fat, but he knows how to do his job, and he doesn't want amateurs getting mixed up in his business; they could get hurt. This most entertaining of movies also achieved some notoriety in the '90s when Quentin Tarantino (director of <I>Pulp Fiction</I>, <I>Reservoir Dogs</I>, and <I>Jackie Brown</I>) revealed that he uses it as a litmus test for prospective girlfriends. Oh, and if the configuration of characters sounds familiar, it should: Hawks remade <I>Rio Bravo</I> two more times--as <I>El Dorado</I> in 1967, with Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and James Caan; and as <I>Rio Lobo</I> in 1970, with Wayne, Jack Elam, and Christopher Mitchum. <I>--Jim Emerson</I>

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best..................2007-06-07

Recall seeing this first run when I was too cool to be a John Wayne fan. And this flick converted me, big time. Good story, interesting characters, great shoot out at the end, and John was never better, being John. And that's no put down. Not the critical or visual masterpiece that was the Searchers, but a more affiable outing for our hero. Action, humor and character development.

5 out of 5 stars Not if you don't mind your own business.......2007-06-06

I love this movie. It's always been my favorite western, and while cinefiles may put "The Searchers" or "Red River" above it, I think no other western is more enjoyable and thrilling to watch than this one. As an examination of what the western really means, why it's such a durable art form, it is perfect. Right vs. wrong, good men vs. bad men, courage vs. cowardice, it's all in there.

Even though I've owned the old cardboard-box DVD for some time now, I bought this new edition the day it came out. (For one thing, I HATE those stupid boxes Warner Brothers put out and I'm glad to see they're correcting their mistake) The new edition contains an excellent 30-minute documentary on the making of the film, including a great interview with Angie Dickinson, who I believe is the only person involved with the movie still alive. I wish she was on the commentary, but she has plenty to say here. Another, shorter documentary talk about Old Tucson, where the movie was filmed and where westerns continue to be filmed even today. Finally, an excellent older hour-long documentary on Howard Hawks himself, with liberal sprinklings of scenes of his movies and a great long interview with Hawks from the early 1970's. It's all worth the price of buying the new edition.

There is also a commentary track with film historian Richard Schickel and director John Carpenter, who says this is his favorite film by his favorite director. The commentary is somewhat less successful, but still very interesting. It appears to be two separate commentaries spliced together; they refer to the movie, but not to each other. I'd rather they had included both commentaries separately, although it is true that by about midway through the movie they both kind of run out of steam and for long stretches you forget you've selected the commentary track at all.

Nevertheless the main thing is the movie, and it is a great one. John Wayne was never better, or at least never more powerful and charismatic, than he was here. Dean Martin calls him "Papa" at one point, and you see the truth of this: John Wayne is the patriarch of the movie, guiding it and helping it along, centering it with the force of his gravity. He's befuddled by the attentions of young Angie Dickinson, to be sure, but you never doubt that he's in charge of this town and he knows what he's doing. Dean Martin is a revelation as Dude, displaying all the raw acting talent he always seemed to hold back with Jerry Lewis because he knew he was the straight man. His torture as he goes through withdrawals from alcohol feel absolutely real, and we root for him as he slowly pulls himself up from the depths to which he's sunk the last few years. It's ironic that his next project was "The Young Lions" with Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift; there are three great actors who all, in their own way, seemed to forgo on the promise of their talent and coast or dissipate themselves into oblivion. At least we have this performance, because Dean was a great, great actor. Walter Brennan is perfect as always, adding spice and flavor to every scene where he appears or is likely to appear. A greater character actor there never was. Rick Nelson is good, if a bit stiff, but he holds his own here and is enjoyable in the role. He and Dean sing a couple of great songs, too, because if you have two of the biggest singers in the world you put 'em to work. Finally, Angie Dickinson is wonderful as Feathers, she's a smart alec (alice?) and she's vulnerable all at the same time, as good as Bacall in her best days, and the difference in age between her and John Wayne is never jarring, not even for a second. You want them to get together, and since this is an old-school western you figure they probably will.

Great movie, great dialogue, great acting, great direction, great color cinematic scope, great everything. Great movie. Check it out. They don't make 'em like this anymore. Too bad.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD movie...........2007-05-26

Rio Bravo is one of John Wayne's more enjoyable movies and this movie is considered to be one of the greatest westerns ever made. Wayne is superbly supported by Dean Martin who also carried the movie as well as Ricky Nelson, Walter Brennan and Angie Dickinson. Great cast, superb script and excellent direction make this movie a viewing a pleasure many times over. It has everything anyone want in a John Wayne movie. Gunfights, fist fights, slow developing story to developed all the main characters and even pacing with a song or two thrown in. So successful was this movie that it was remade two more times as El Dorado and Rio Lobo. Amazingly, all three movies were directed by Howard Hawks and starred John Wayne. Even more amazing is that all three movies proves to be just as good and entertaining as ever.

This two disc Special Edition of Rio Bravo is a definite upgrade in both quality of image as well as sound over the previous release. I found the running commentary by John Carpenter and Richard Schickel to be somewhat enjoyable but the extra features proves to be a disappointment. There are three special features on the second disc. Two of them, Howard Hawk's Rio Bravo and Old Tucson: Where Legends Walked proves to be quite interesting. However, I was pretty disappointed by the main feature of this second disc, Men Who Made Movies: Howard Hawks. This feature I have seen already on Bringing Up Baby two disc edition (superb Katherine Hepburn/Cary Grant movie). I was very unhappy that a documentary already used in one DVD movie was reused for another. Warner Brothers made a cheap move here. (However, if you do not owned Bringing Up Baby, then you will get more out of the second disc then I did.)

I gave five stars for the movie, three stars for the special features, averaging out to four stars for this review. It should be noted that this two disc edition is exactly identical to the "ultimate edition" although that edition cost more and have a reproduction of Dell comic book based on the movie and promo booklet attached to it. (Much like the Ultimate Edition of the Searchers.)

4 out of 5 stars A Classic With Great Extras!.......2007-05-25

I have the earlier DVD, but bought this one for the wonderful extras. However, I like the print from the first DVD better. I think it is a matter of taste, but I think this print is much darker than the first DVD. Faces seem more red, less fleshtone. I would simply exchange the older disc for the newer one, except that the newer, darker movie disc also has a very nice Commentary by John Carpenter and Richard Schickel. On the other hand, the documentary about Howard Hawks is worth the price of the 2-disc DVD itself. Some great extras more than make up for a weaker copy of the film -- I guess I will keep both versions.

5 out of 5 stars A brand-new remastered film with numerous bonuses.......2007-05-20

Dear China Smith, no one is forcing you to upgrade your mono sound, faded color, pan/scan single disk of RIO BRAVO. But I, for one, welcome the chance to purchase a newly-remastered sight and sound edition of this great Howard Hawks western, with commentary by admirers John Carpenter and Richard Schickel, Schickel's brilliant 1973 documentary, a John Wayne trailer gallery, and especially two brand-new documentaries in appreciation of the movie. RIO BRAVO is a masterpiece that is getting the crown jewels treatment for only $16 from Amazon. It deserves a serious review by you on none at all. And there are also those who are willing to spend even more to get a pressbook, a comic book, and more. I will settle for the $16 two-disk set and am excited about upgrading my old copy. Consider it an inexpensive variation on the car lover who has to have the newest model every five years.

Amazon.com essential video

4 out of 5 stars Actual Release FINALLY Reviewed.......2007-06-23

I believe at this point in time I'm unique in that I seem to be the only reviewer who will have actually reviewed the Two-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition of Rio Bravo (and high time, too). Since I also own the original DVD release, I can compare the two prints (although to be honest, I loaned it to my Russian doctoral advisor a few years ago and he seems loath to part with it; however, the extras include unrestored scenes to which this can be compared). We all KNOW that this is "the greatest Western that John Ford never made," otherwise, why would we be on this page? So rather than preach to the converted (which is basically a waste of time), I'll try to concentrate this review on the extras and the print itself.
To be honest, I prefer the older release for print quality. Given that this film was shot in Technicolor, I would assume that Warner would do the right thing and not tweak the original color values (I'm guessing that Rio Bravo wouldn't be a candidate for Warner/AOL's Edge Enhancement restoration because it was probably shot on one strip of film rather than three). But this print looks 'way too dark compared to the first release, with a rather significant loss of detail in the night and interior shots. To be honest, the detail is excellent in the brighter shots, but overall, I think the earlier release looks better and is immediately recognizable as Technicolor; this one almost looks like it's DeLuxe or Eastman. Okay...maybe it's not quite THAT bad, but I don't think it's an upgrade--everyone is orange, including the horses.
I don't know exactly what the stated audio restoration entailed, but it sounds great. There's an excellent commentary by Richard Schickel and John Carpenter (who manages to worship at the shrine without a hint of obsequiousness), and subtitles in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and--of all things--Korean. There are also a number of trailers for Wayne's B westerns, culminating in one for Rio Bravo.
The extras on the second disk include three documentaries which are all deserving of the proverbial enthusiastic thumbs-up. The first is an installment of Schickel's series The Men Who Made the Movies which focuses on Howard Hawks; the second is titled Commemoration: Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo that features (among others) the ubiquitous Peter Bogdanovich (whom I find irritating almost beyond enduring) and Walter Hill and which, in spite of my aversion, I found enjoyable; everyone involved is a serious Rio Bravo fan and has something of interest to contribute. The final installment is called Old Tucson: Where the Legends Walked; this tells the story of what was to become the Old Tucson Studio and which was the location on which Rio Bravo was shot. This was all new to me and, like the other two documentaries, was lots of fun.
We now come to the non-video extras. You may have read mention of "a comic book" that's included with this set. What ISN'T mentioned is that it's a miniature reproduction of a 10¢ Dell comic book that was released for sale concurrently with the film (these weren't uncommon during that time period, now that I think of it). Also included is a miniature of what looks to be a promotional catalogue intended for theater owners, explaining how best to promote the film.
Finally, there's a nice little set of miniature theater cards that somehow managed to get somewhat mangled in their sleeve. Since the trays that hold the disks were damaged when I received my set and are therefore being returned, I'm hoping for better things next time around.
I was lucky enough to purchase this with a coupon for about the same price as the list for the Two-Disc Special Edition, so I decided to go for it (I'm a sucker for gimmicks). I don't know if I'd advise purchasing it for list, as the extras, while nice, aren't essential. In fact, I don't even know that this new release is essential. If you already own the original release, there's really no reason to go for this one unless you want the documentaries and commentary. I knocked off a star because I'm really not crazy about the print, plus there's no hard-copy chapter index (a major pain in the posterior, in my book). Regardless of which release you purchase, Rio Bravo is a must-have for anyone who claims to be a Western fan (which wouldn't include ugly-boy e-stalkers from Finland with liver lips). It belongs in the library of every serious film buff.

5 out of 5 stars Hawks at his (near) best!.......2007-06-05

It doesn't match up to the brilliant perfection of Hawks', "Red River", but it does have a great deal of gentle humor that the other lacks. This was always my third favorite Western after "Red River" and Ford's, "The Searchers". It has a sense of menace and a wonderful story, but it's so breezy and (unintentionally?) light-hearted (you can tell that everyone is having a blast making this film!), it's hard to take it seriously! The best thing to do is just sing along with Dean and Ricky (I always do!), and enjoy the ride!
P.S. It's "Winchester 73'"!

4 out of 5 stars The Duke was always stylish..........2007-06-04

As my birthday is creeping up and this film was released in 59 and I shall turn 59 in June (07) I felt like splurging for the Two Disc Ultimate Rio Bravo. Happy I did. I love westerns but didn't know this film that well, thought I had seen it but realized when I started to unspool it that I had never seen it all the way through. It's a terrific film, I have other westerns favorites that I feel are superior; The Searchers, Winchester 73 (I think that's the caliber), One Eyed Jack etc., but this is very good and the packaging is terrrific. You even get a re print of The Dell comic of the film (reduced in size of course) also there is the advertising circular that Warners sent out to theatre owners. As for the film, it's The Duke at his Dukest and Dean Martin is pretty good, Ricky Nelson could never act but looks good on screen...Angie Dickenson steals the picture...in black tights even. Happy with my purchase and you will be too.

5 out of 5 stars Great,but where,s YELLOWSTONE KELLY/.......2007-05-09

Although The Searchers is my no 1,there is no doubt about the class of Rio Bravo. If the Documentaries are even half as good as The Searchers 50th Anniversary Special Edition then, very well done Warners.
Kelly J Colvin reports that there are more Special Editions on the way.
WHERE IS YELLOWSTONE KELLY,Widescreen please;;
Rio Bravo has been reviewed thousands of times,i think we all agree about its status as an All Time Classic.
WHERE IS YELLOWSTONE KELLY?;;Not even on VHS,never mind DVD,AN ABSOLUTE SCANDAL,C,mon Warners,what are you playing at? A whole generation loved this classic,SO PLEASE DO SOMETHING;;
Davy,westernnut.

5 out of 5 stars Finally by Ian Colvin, 12-year old filmmaker.......2007-04-09

Finally Warner Home Video has come to its senses and are going to release one of the greatest westerns of all time (right up there with "The Searchers"). I don't understand why it took them so long to release this film. Why they release stupid new movies before a classic such as this is beyond me. Anyway, Warner has finally come to its senses in this year, 2007. Also coming this year or up till 2008 are: the 1927 film "The Jazz Singer" (first talkie), 1924's "Greed", "The Magnificen Ambersons", and Stanley Kubrick special editions (yes!).

1 out of 5 stars WAIT FOR THE WARNER BROS RELEASE.......2007-06-05

I should have paid more attention to the description of this DVD. I thought that it was the official WB release, finally, on DVD. This is an import from Hong Kong, and let me tell you, my WB VHS tape is of far better quality. The sound is great, but the color is completely washed out and the picture runs right out of the frame. In the famous "Al Di La" scene, Suzanne Pleshette's nose is cut in half. Don't waste even $8.99 on this version; wait until Warner Brothers releases it. If you must have it now; buy the VHS tape. I'm not kidding!

1 out of 5 stars Rome Adventure.......2007-05-20

This is a great movie, but the DVD is definately poor quality. I returned the first copy I received because the movie was jumpy and was skipping in multiple places through out the movie. The replacement copy was the exact same way. It skipped in the same exact places in the movie as the first copy I received. I am returning it too and just asking for a refund. I hope that they eventually come out with a good quality version of this movie.

2 out of 5 stars Poor quality DVD.......2007-05-19

I really enjoy this movie. However I wish it would come out on a quality DVD. This one made overseas has very poor picture and sound. Don't waist your money as I did buying this one.

4 out of 5 stars Like a Trip to Rome.......2007-04-11

Film was very enjoyable with a nice story and good actors. My only complaint was that the coloring was somewhat pale from what it was when I saw the film in the theater.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, Unforgettable Film!.......2006-10-04

As usual, there is a deluge of junk released on DVD, yet the classics from the 50's and 60's are left by the wayside! Movies like this and A Summer Place, Lucy Gallant, Susan Slade brings me back to being a teen-ager again. I was in love with Troy and pictured myself in all these movies as the female lead. If anyone remembers `The Million Dollar Movie' or `The Late Show', these types of films were main stays and you could see them all week long. Why must we beg for these movies to be released? What about Parrish or Palm Springs Weekend? Maybe if all us fans write to the studios, they will realize that there is a market for these films and that most of us don't want to see 6 episodes of a cancelled TV show put out on DVD within weeks of the cancellation- Just maybe we would like to see something from a more innocent, gentler time.

Leave it to the Chairman of the Board to rope in a great director for the first Rat Pack movie. Lewis Milestone (All Quiet on the Western Front) indeed directed this 1960 caper movie starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop; but the results now seem like more of a historical artifact than a good time. The tone of the film is curiously serious--one somehow expected that the Rat Pack would have made a more buoyant first picture. But it is something to see these guys together, if largely for nostalgia reasons. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-03-25

I enjoyed this movie tremendously. I like the ocean 11 with george clooney, brad pitt and matt damon. but the orignial is...well...just the original. you can't compare the new one to this. I love it when dean martin is playing a kick in the head and all the girl swoon him. also the clever plot of putting the money into the trash can, and i never would have guessed the ending. it came as a huge surprise!

Description

On December 31, 1931, lone trapper Albert Johnson (Charles Bronson) shot and killed a man in self-defense at his remote Yukon cabin. A few days later, hard-living lawman Sgt. Edgar Millen (Lee Marvin) reluctantly brought a heavily armed posse to arrest Johnson for murder. In the brutal siege that followed, Johnson would kill four more men before escaping into the frozen mountains. As a nation watched, Millen was forced to pursue Johnson by foot, dogsled and plane in a desperate chase that would take both men from the brink of survival to the very edge of vengeance. <P>Fifteen years after THE DIRTY DOZEN, Bronson and Marvin re-teamed for this explosive action hit directed by Peter Hunt (ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, ASSASSINATION). Andrew Stevens, Carl Weathers and Angie Dickinson co-star in this real-life story of the fugitive called 'The Mad Trapper' and the manhunt that shocked the world. Based On The Incredible True Story Of'The Deadliest Manhunt In History'

5 out of 5 stars catch me if you can and live to tell about it.......2007-03-14

There are two movies that come to mind, when I speak of this one,"Lonely are the Brave" and "Valdez is Coming". The same theme in all three of these excellent films, "the Law Hunts The Fugitive" The fugitive portrays the sympathytic hero in all three films. In all three, the persuer takes a liking to the one he hunts. They come to respect his courage and fortitude. This movie is full of twists, turns, thrills and spills, excitement, suspense, not to mention beautiful mountain scenery. Last but definetly not least, Lee Marvin and Charles Bronon, they alone are worth the price of admission. "Anonymously" Louie G.

5 out of 5 stars Marvin and Bronson at their best.......2007-03-02

This film is a masterpiece for action and adventure.Great scenery and an ending where all the good guys win,BRILLIANT.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing film!.......2007-02-07

Lee Marvin and Chuck Bronson are both top-flight actors, and their presence in this movie only makes an excellent 'chase' plot that much the better. This is one that can be watched when the desire to see a good action film hits again and again as it contains interesting nuances and issues that keep it from getting 'old.'

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Bronson.......2007-01-12

I enjoyed this film, typical of the 1970s Bronson Genre - quietly spoken tough guy. Lee Marvin also plays a good role as the knock about arm of the law - who feels more sympathy for Bronson's character than his pursuers. Angie Dickenson plays a less likely widow that becomes attracted to the much older Marvin - a common thread in the 70's for some reason - a bit unrealistic but it doesn't detract from the overall story and suspense. Enjoyable action scenes and a fantastic snow covered environment make this a movie worth buying.

    Description

There's a showdown at Rio Bravo when courageous Sheriff John T. Chance throws the brother of evil cattle baron Nathan Burdette in jail for murder. When Burdette's men lay seige to his jailhouse, Chance holds on until the arrival of a U.S. Marshal with the help of his drunken deputy, Dude, cranky old man Stumpy, and the beautiful long-legged Feathers.

Karaoke is a way for average people to get on stage and sing cover songs. In <I>Duets</I>, it's also a money sport. No, really. As with other bar sports (pool, darts), the karaoke-for-money game is rife with hustlers. One such hustler is Ricky Dean (Huey Lewis), who takes time off the karaoke circuit to attend the funeral of his ex-wife, where he meets his estranged daughter (Gwyneth Paltrow) and can't shake her desire to go on the road with him. The other hustler is Suzi Loomis (Maria Bello), a woman who literally prostitutes herself to get from gig to gig, until she meets up with a kind-hearted cabby (Scott Speedman). Then there's Todd Woods (Paul Giamatti), who gets so fed up with his sales job and being ignored at home that he hits the road, moving from karaoke bar to karaoke bar in a voyage of self-discovery. Along the way he picks up Reggie Kane (Andre Braugher), an escaped felon with a voice like an angel. All three couples end up in Omaha for the $5,000 karaoke finals. Chock full of bad writing and bad direction, the movie inspires a perverse fascination. Braugher and Giamatti chew up the scenery at every opportunity, but most interesting is the father-daughter incest subtext (compounded by the fact that the movie is directed by Gwyneth's dad, Bruce Paltrow). Eeeeesh. <I>--Andy Spletzer</I>

    Description

Academy Award(R)-winner Gwyneth Paltrow (Best Actress, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY) and Scott Speedman (TV's FELICITY) are part of the stellar ensemble cast in a hilariously offbeat comedy! The lives of six stranges become outrageously intertwined when a riotous road trip culminates at the site of the national Karaoke championships. As they compete for the $5,000 grand prize, this unlikely group will eventually learn all about each other ... while discovering answers to the questions about themselves! Also featuring great performances from Maria Bello (COYOTE UGLY), Andre Braugher (FREQUENCY), Paul Giamatti (BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE), and Huey Lewis (SHADOW OF DOUBT) -- you'll agree with audiences everywhere who fell in love with this uncommonly entertaining comedy!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Better Than American Idol!.......2007-03-20

Winning at karaoke might not seem like a promising theme for a movie. It might initially strike you as providing as flimsy a foundation for drama as Sylvester Stallone's movie about arm-wrestling. But this movie works. And unless you are a devotee of karaoke, it will probably also surprise you. It will make you aware that there's a whole subculture out there that, like the world of pool players, is filled with hustlers, fans, newbies who become addicts, and a host of other colorful characters.

"Duets" isn't perfect though. It generally adopts an up-beat tone as it follows the stories of a variety of people who all converge for the finale at a high-stakes karaoke contest. The individual stories tend to be as life-affirming as the interweaving stories in movies such as "Grand Canyon." However, some jarring elements seep through. And in fact, the bonus commentary reveals that this movie was adapted from a novel consisting of violent, surreal episodes. Some scenes with that slant were indeed shot, but the director wisely chose to relegate them to the "Deleted Scenes" pile. If they had been included, the whole movie would have been derailed into some nihilistic view of a world ruled by random acts of brutality. As it is, this original conception of the material is only hinted at in the mysterious truncation of certain scenes and in a few leaps in narrative logic.

However, these minor flaws are more than compensated for by what became the overall arc of this movie. Most particularly, the chemistry between the players here is wonderful and universally redeeming. Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis as daughter and father have a real spark between them. Paul Giamatti as the escapee from suburbia and Andre Braugher as the hitchhiker he picks up similarly develop an unlikely, but very real rapport.

Most of all though, this movie is about the music. Almost all the actors here did their own singing. Paul Giamatti reportedly protested that he couldn't sing at all and wanted to be dubbed. But when the cameras started to roll, he blossomed into a song-stylist par excellence. All sorts of unsuspected talent is revealed, making this movie a better trip than a whole season of American Idol!

5 out of 5 stars Duets is FANTASTIC.......2007-02-02

For me, you don't get much better then stars who are known primarily for their acting ability making an attempt to try their hand in singing/dancing (with the exception of straight guys dressing up as girls). Duets is non-stop entertainment. I can't take my eyes off the screen when it is on. My only critique would be more singing, less dialogue.

    4 out of 5 stars Duets.......2007-01-09

I like this movie because it is pure entertainment & moves along quickly. It's one of those "feel good" movies.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2006-11-19

This was one of my favorite movies. Unlike one other reviewer, I'd say this is one to watch more than once ..... like listening to a good album many times. I thought the story was decent, but the music is what really made the movie. Much like the music made Dirty Dancing (another of my all time favs). I also thought Mario Bello did a great rendition of "I Can't Make You Love Me". This is well worth buying.

2 out of 5 stars For the most part... sour talent & plot.......2006-10-23

This is one of those movies you will want to watch only once. There was so much potential for the story line and comedy, but it appears somewhere along the line everyone just got lazy. The only worthy converse is between the father and daughter. Huey Lewis, Gwyneth Paltrow and Arnold McCuller's acting and talent were great, but everyone else really lacked. Especially Maria Bello's, which I was really surprised that she was cast to sing since she has no talent and her voice just made you want to turn off the volume. There is a ton of holes in the story line and talent with this one. Save this for a rainy, bored day or skip it all together....
