Description

The Cannes Film Festival. It's where deals get made, producers get laid, and stars get paid. It's where all the movie industry meets to buy and sell all the movies on the planet. And it's where the art of the deal can be filled with more laughs than the deal itself. Sy Lerner (Seymour Cassel) is the quintessential movie producer, when he makes a bet that he can take any kid off the street and turn him into a superstar over night using the universal language of the festival: hype. He meets Frank Rhinoslavsky (Francesco Quinn) and turns him into “Frank Rhino, one of the hottest screenwriters to hit Cannes since Faulkner and Hemingway.” It's not long before celebrities and producers are linging up to meet this hot young star. Dennis Hopper, Treat Williams, Johnny Depp, John Malkovich and more, all want to meet this “next Quentin Tarantino.” Sy charms them with his own particular blend of hype and substance, and by the end of the festival, has lined up one of the ! great casts of all time. But Sy Lerner still has a few tricks up his sleeve for his wife (Rebecca Broussard), Frank Rhino and the myriad of people that have invested in this nonexistent, non-scripted film. He drops dead. And all the money the invested in his film goes up in smoke. But in the end, Sy Lerner has pulled the ultimate con, making him truly the one and only, “Cannes Man.”

5 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2002-02-11

Cannes Man was funny. I don't know why this movie was in the drama section of Blockbuster, but it made me laugh out loud. Just goes to show that nobody knows anything in lalaland, and movies are made by a bunch of nincompoops who don't know their **s from a hole in the ground.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2002-02-11

I've been to Cannes and this film captures it to a T. If you're looking for a Johnny Depp film, this isn't it - he does a ten minute cameo in it with Jim Jarmusch. But it's the funniest ten minutes I've ever seen Johnny Depp be. If you are interested in film festivals, or wanted to know what the real Cannes festival is like, this video is hilarious.

2 out of 5 stars I would toss Cannes Man in the can..........2001-12-03

Though it gives a behind the scenes view of the Cannes Film Festival and the movie business, it is so not funny and sickenly cynical. The movie was so bad I felt myself losing intelligence just watching it! Unbelievable.
The only good scene is with Johnny Depp meditating and smoking with the director of Dead Man. The scene is funny, making fun at himself and the whole celebrity scene making it seem so bizarre.

Note: This film would be good for anyone involved in the film business, but I would NOT recommend it for us moviegoers.
