Originally broadcast in April and May of 1998, the epic miniseries <I>From the Earth to the Moon</I> was HBO's most expensive production to date, with a budget of $68 million. Hosted by executive producer Tom Hanks, the miniseries tackles the daunting challenge of chronicling the entire history of NASA's <I>Apollo</I> space program from 1961 to 1972. For the most part, it's a rousing success. Some passages are flatly chronological, awkwardly wedging an abundance of factual detail into a routine dramatic structure. But each episode is devoted to a crucial aspect of the Apollo program. The cumulative effect is a deep and thorough appreciation of NASA's monumental achievement. With the help of a superlative cast, consistent writing, and a stable of talented directors, Hanks has shared his infectious enthusiasm for space exploration and the inspiring power of conquering the final frontier. <P> NASA's complete participation in the production lends to its total authenticity, right down to the use of NASA equipment, launch locations, and even spacecraft. The re-creation of the lunar landscape is almost as impressive as the real thing and is further enhanced by the use of helium balloons to lighten the actors playing moon-walking astronauts. (These and other backstage details are revealed in the "making of" featurette, along with a wealth of supplemental materials, on a bonus disc in the miniseries' DVD package.) With a fictional, Walter Cronkite-like TV reporter (Lane Smith) serving as the dramatic link for all 12 episodes, this ambitious production may not be a great work of art. But as a generous and definitive example of nonfiction drama, it's full of the same kind of awe, inspiration, and humanity that led to "one giant leap" in the all-too-short history of 20th-century space exploration. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Awesome buy.......2007-06-09
Great quality, wonderful packaging and super fast delivery. This is a must for anyone interested in space history.
Phenomenal.......2007-06-08
This is a great series that shows just how great our country was when it really put its mind to doing something. Its sad how far we have fallen and how little interest there is in space. We used to lead the world in science, now we are dismally far down the list. This series shows the pioneering spirit that made our country great.
As good as it gets..........2007-05-17
I was born after the Apollo missions were a thing of the past, so I have no personal recollection of any of the events depicted in "From the Earth to the Moon." And I have never been particularly fascinated with space, never one to say as a kid that I wanted to be an astronaut when I was older. I thought "Apollo 13" was a solid film. I say all of this to provide the context to suggest that I was not naturally predisposed to love this miniseries.
Nonetheless, I found "From the Earth to the Moon" to be utterly fascinating, a remarkable piece of filmmaking. It helps that it covers a piece of history that is full of great stories. I was in awe of the size of the task that lay before all those involved in the Apollo missions and the synergy of a million little decisions and inventions and steps and tasks that needed to come together to make Apollo 11 possible. Thankfully, it didn't appear that the filmmakers felt inclined to exaggerate the stories. Instead, they allowed the power of that slice of history to stand on its own.
Another strength of this miniseries was the technique of having different directors for each episode. This allowed each episode to have its own feel, its own flavor. This variety was refreshing and never allowed the nearly 12 hours of film to become stale. Of course, there were a few episodes that I found to be less appealing, as one would expect from so many different approaches, but the diversity of storytelling techniques made a few personal dislikes to be worthwhile.
A final major strength was the fact that each episode focused on a different set of people in the whole scheme of things. One episode focused on the media. One episode focused on the wives of the astronauts. One episode focused on the company contracted to build the lunar module for the Apollo missions. One episode focused on the scientists within NASA who battled amongst each other on such things as the location of the next landing site. One episode focused on the relationships between the three astronauts assigned to a particular mission. Again, this varied focus provided each episode with a unique perspective and shed new light on the events.
My only complaint, and this is minor, is that the extras were very underwhelming. One "making of" documentary was interesting, but the rest of the extras were rather forgettable. I suppose that this was produced on the front end of the extras phenomenon, but I would have liked to have seen more interviews, unused footage, and maybe even some bloopers.
Overall, I would rank "From the Earth to the Moon" among the finest pieces of filmmaking that I've ever seen. The acting was fantastic, and all of the production values were top-notch. I was utterly captivated and wish that the series had continued into Skylab, the shuttles, and beyond!!
GREAT MINISERIES.......2007-05-14
I've loved this series since it first premiered on HBO. I am very happy to now have it in my home collection.
I yelled at my brother when Armstrong landed on the moon..........2007-04-23
...because I was sleeping and did not understand as a little girl, barely nine, what it meant to take a step off our lonely planet and on to the nearest star.
Some 40 years later, I am learning every shred about the Apollo space program. Back then, my small mind only knew about them through abbreviated nightly news programs or during those annoying "Special Report" broadcasts detailing the flight path of the latest mission.
Every classroom in America should cover this body of work with our young minds, thirsty for examples of real leadership and what rewards can be had with hard work and the courage to take risks.
"From Earth to the Moon" is worth every penny. Run to buy it now. And make sure you watch it with a big box of tissues at your side. You'll be left with a tear in your eye and a lump in your throat throughout.

Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there's no crying in baseball! <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Customer Reviews:
An oldie but a goodie........2007-06-21
I remember watching this movie when I was younger a few years after it came out on VHS. I'll admit that then, I obviously didn't understand the WWII concept (as I was maybe 7 or 8 years old) but it still was a movie that I continually loved to watch. Even now, roughly 15 years after its release, I still thoroughly enjoy this film.
So what's this movie about? It's World War II and there's a need for American sports to raise morale. With the men away, who is going to play? The women, of course! This movie shows the beginnings of mainly two specific teams in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. From the ups and downs stemming from the game, to the ups and downs stemming from the women's personal lives, this movie gives us a glimpse into the lives of women living during the WWII era.
So what's to like about this movie? First of all, there's an abundance of famous actors and actresses including Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and Rosie O'Donnell. Looking back, I truly didn't appreciate how wonderful the casting was for this movie. Second, this movie forces a ton of emotions out of you. Some scenes are funny, some scenes show hope, and some scenes are sad. It isn't just about baseball. It's mainly about the lives of the women playing the game. Third, anyone, no matter what age, will enjoy this movie. From the older folks who can remember what it was like living during this period, to younger people like myself who simply enjoy the humor, this movie provides so much entertainment.
And what's not to like? Nothing really. As I said above, younger children will like this movie although they probably won't understand the war aspect. Apart from that, this movie contains no other negatives.
When it comes to movies that all will enjoy, A League of Their Own is at the top of my list.
There's no crying in baseball!.......2007-06-15
The men go over seas for war. The All-American Baseball League needs to make money, so they create and All-American Girls Baseball League.
Dottie Hanson (Geena Davis) and her "kid sister Kit," (Lori Petty) play in a local softball league and get recruited to play in the new major league. Jimmy Dugan, (Tom Hanks) a washed up a former baseball player, gets fed up with the girls he manages but then gets used to the change of gender. Dottie ia an awesome catcher and hitter who everyone loves, while Kit is an okay pitcher and hitter who everyone likes. Hanson is the best on the team and everyone knows it, Kits gets jelous and things don't work out too well between them. Madonna (Mae) and Rosie O'Donnell (Doris) are also starring on the team. All the cast members did an awesome job acting.
I thought this movie was going to be boring, because my mom picked it out but it turns out I was laughing hysterically and enjoying th movie. This classic, major league comedy will catch your eye. "A League of Their Own is own of my favorite movies and will soon be yours too.
I recommend this to mostly eight years old and up because of mild language. Other than that this movie flabbergasted me, it is awesome! You will love this movie once you see it!
All-time favorite movie.......2007-04-25
This has got to be my favorite movie of all time. I was a big fastpitch player back in middle school and high school and when this movie came out I was pretty excited. Great actors, great story, and inspiring that it was actually based on a true story. Movies just aren't as good now-a-days like they used to be back in the 80s and 90s. This is a must see!
Girls play ball?.......2007-04-04
This baseball movie set in the middle of WWII, is excellent, and my granddaughters watch it over and over! Since my granddaughters are avid softball players this true story video about a woman's baseball league helps promots woman sports in a very realistic way. Highly recommended for any baseball coillection and for viewing by all girl ball teams, they will love it!
What did the nation do for sports entertainment while all the young men were off at war? .......2007-03-12
According to "League of their Own", womens' baseball teams were formed to keep the sports fans happy. So, Rosie had an option for a bat as well as a riveter. "League of their Own" is not a completely accurate picture of the life of women during World War II, but it's a very entertaining film about women's self reliance and learning to play on a team.

Hit man Martin Q. Blank (John Cusack) is in an awkward situation. Several of them, actually. He's attending his high school reunion on an assignment; he's got a rival hit man (Dan Aykroyd) on his tail; and he's going to have to explain to his old girlfriend (Minnie Driver) why he stood her up on prom night. This amiable black comedy, cowritten by Cusack and directed by Jonathan Demme protégé George Armitage (<I>Miami Blues</I>), has the feel of Demme's <I>Something Wild</I> and <I>Married to the Mob</I>--which is to say its humor is dark and brightly colored at the same time. Cusack and Driver are utterly charming--as is the leading man's sister, Joan, who plays his secretary. (Ms. Cusack received an Oscar nomination for her next role, in <I>In & Out.) Alan Arkin is also very funny as Martin's psychiatrist. <I>--Jim Emerson</I>
Description
Here's the killer comedy hit that's loaded with outrageous fun! For Martin Blank (John Cusack -- HIGH FIDELITY, SERENDIPITY), a hit man stuck in a career rut, attending his 10-year high school reunion is about the last thing he's in the mood for! But when the prospects of rekindling an old flame (Minnie Driver -- GOOD WILL HUNTING) and pulling off one final job convince him to go, things are looking up ... that is, until Martin's arch rival (Dan Aykroyd) shows up aiming to blow the competition away! For hilarious comedy entertainment that's packed with action, GROSSE POINTE BLANK is a surefire knockout!

Grosse Pointe Blank..........2007-02-04
Mr. Cusack takes us for a wild ride in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. The man is simply trying to attend his High School reunion. But, he has a few issues to deal with while he's there...I'll let you find out for yourself! Get it at a good price - then enjoy it! Three stars!!
Were you in high school in the 80s? .......2007-01-12
Hysterically funny perspective on transitioning from high school to adulthood. John Cusack delivers a terrific performance as does Minnie Driver and Joan Cusack.
Grosse Pointe Blank.......2006-11-06
Sharp wit combined with excellent delivery make Grosse Pointe one of my favorite movies. It's always interesting when the protagonist is such an aweful person, yet seems like a hero. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who likes dry humor and has a tolerance for the depths of human monstrosity.
Grosse Pointe Blank.......2006-11-04
Gotta be the funniest, wittiest, fastest comedy out there. I can't stand not to watch this one. I probably see it twice a year. It's that good. Every line is good, every scene is good. Never predictable, never dull or formulaic, despite being an outgrowth of Cusack's prestigious 1980's lexicon of light comedies.
No shooting blanks, this hits the mark!.......2006-10-05
This was one of my favorite movies of the 90s. If you don't like the movie, definately get the soundtrack because it is by far one of the best compilations of underground 80s alternative I've ever heard, and it really carries the movie along well.

Justin Long has been hovering on the edges of movies like <I>The Break-Up</I> and <I>Dodgeball</I>, providing little comic bursts that are often funnier than the rest of the movie. In <I>Accepted</I>, Long plays Bartleby Gaines, a fast-talking slacker who, when he gets rejected by every college he applied to, invents a phony college to get his parents off his back. Unfortunately, the website his best friend creates is too effective--hundreds of other rejects apply and are accepted. Instead of revealing the hoax, Gaines decides to forge ahead and let the students create their own curriculum, little suspecting that their school is obstructing the expansion plans of the nearby snobbish college. <I>Accepted</I> is much better than you might expect, given the low bar set by most campus comedies; it aims for, and sometimes achieves, the blend of slapstick and social satire that <I>Animal House</I> embodied. Long proves to be a charming leading man without losing his quirky comic sense and the supporting cast is consistently entertaining, particularly stand-up comedian Lewis Black, who delivers a variety of sardonic rants about society. <I>Accepted</I>'s critique of conformism is glib--you wish they'd given it a little more bite--but it's still valid and a pleasant sliver of substance in an otherwise vapid genre. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

This movie really surprised me! It is one of the better school based comedies to come out in a long time! Justin Long does a pretty good job carrying this film with the help of some odd,but likable characters. It even has a decent message! I'm sure there are a lot of parents who would like to send there less then steller offspring to a place like "South Harmond Institute of Technology". This is worth watching if not owning for sure.
A mini 2000s Animal House.......2007-05-01
In the tradition of Animal House, there have been a few great college movies here and there. I was pleasently surprised that this was right up there with them.
Bartelby has been rejected by every college he applied to, as have his friends. Instead of wallowing in misery, he gets a friend to create a website of a fake college to escape the wrath of his parents. They rent an abandoned psychiatric hospital, clean it up, and create a fake college from the ground up. Unexpectedly, hundreds of other burn outs who also didn't get accepted show up, as acceptance is just one click away. Bartelby and his friends are forced to create a class schedule and activities, run a business, and compete with the inevitable rival frat house on the real college campus across the street.
What was so hilarious about this movie is the fact that even for a moment, Bartelby and his friends thought they could get away with this. Not just for themselves, but for all those hundreds of people who also showed up. There is the obvious comic talent of Justin Long and the man they hire to be their dean, Lewis Black, along with the rest of the cast. Plus the set up of the fake college is hilarious : a half pipe for skateboarding, swimming pool with an open bar, etc. Good times.
Fun Comedy with Charming Actors.......2007-04-16
I recently reviewed Talladega Nights, the Legend of Ricky Bobby, and gave it 3 stars. It felt like it was missing something. This movie reminded me of what was missing in Ricky Bobby and a lot of other comedies. Accepted was not only a fun comedy movie with delightful young actors, especially Justin Long; but it also had a nice little message about everyone having their place in life. Most comedies strive to grab you with dirty humor or little sight gags. I really enjoyed Accepted for the fun film that it was. The movie did not try to be more than it was, a nice little 90 minute film with some great scenes and memorable characters. Well deserving of its PG-13 rating. A surprising 4 star movie.
I loved this movie!!.......2007-03-28
I enjoyed "Accepted" because it didn't take it self so seriously.I liked the concept of making up a fictional college. The DVD bonus features are fun as well. The deleted scenes and the bloopers reel and the other features are fun must own HD DVD Title.
Histerical.......2007-03-23
I just saw this movie yesterday on my friends iPod and i couldnt stop laughing for the rest of the day. It is definitely in my top 5 favorite comedies of all time. One of my favorite lines in the movie is when Schtrader tells Ambrose that he thinks about Monica when he mastu.... You gotta see it for it to be funny. Theres about a million more great lines. Also just the idea of the movie is genius, a college reject makes a school so he isnt looked down on by his family, and eventually becomes a school of rejects. Anyway, its a great movie and I can't imagine anyone else besides Justin Long who couldve played that part better.

The classic science fiction novel by Ray Bradbury was a curious choice for one of the leading directors of the French New Wave, François Truffaut. But from the opening credits onward (spoken, not written on screen), Truffaut takes Bradbury's fascinating premise and makes it his own. The futuristic society depicted in <I>Fahrenheit 451</I> is a culture without books. Firemen still race around in red trucks and wear helmets, but their job is to start fires: they ferret out forbidden stashes of books, douse them with gasoline, and make public bonfires. Oskar Werner, the star of Truffaut's <I>Jules and Jim</I>, plays a fireman named Montag, whose exposure to <I>David Copperfield</I> wakens an instinct toward reading and individual thought. (That's why books are banned--they give people too many ideas.) In an intriguing casting flourish, Julie Christie plays two roles: Montag's bored, drugged-up wife and the woman who helps kindle the spark of rebellion. The great Bernard Herrmann wrote the hard-driving music; Nicolas Roeg provided the cinematography. <I>Fahrenheit 451</I> received a cool critical reception and has never quite been accepted by Truffaut fans or sci-fi buffs. Its deliberately listless manner has always been a problem, although that is part of its point; the lack of reading has made people dry and empty. If the movie is a bit stiff (Truffaut did not speak English well and never tried another project in English), it nevertheless is full of intriguing touches, and the ending is lyrical and haunting. <I>--Robert Horton</I>
Customer Reviews:
Fahrenheit 451.......2007-03-20
Timeless story of the evil of political correctness. The cast in this movie is outstanding. Michael Moore deserves to burn in hell for besmirching the name of this movie for his petty drivel.
One of my favourite films.......2007-02-19
François Truffaut's first film in the English language still stands up well, in my opinion. It is a very fine adaptation of Ray Bradbury's book.
I wonder what it says to us today? Possibly quite a lot. The world in which the story takes place does look, superficially, inviting. Maybe this is what it means to be living in a police state? Guy Montag, played with great style by Oskar Werner, is a cool character (and forget the moronic American meaning of the word "cool" here), in that he isn't passionate and lives a rather passionless life. Millie Montag, his wife, is played by Julie Christie, who also plays the role of Clarice.
The film is powerful because it rarely overstates its case and keeps the violence to a minimum.
The film was "futuristic" in the mid-sixties, when it was made, and it does have a decidedly '60s look about it now. However, it does present us with a people who have forgotten books and get their kicks from very large -interactive TV screens - not that that would ever happen, would it!?
Strange, but true.......2007-02-07
This film had a powerful effect on me. 95% of the people I know don't read books. I met a millionaire not long ago, who boasted to me that he had never read a book in his life. Lady Di was reported never to have read anything --- except perhaps fashion mags. My children hardly read, and their husbands and wives certainly don't. My ex-wife never read anything. Her father thought Ulysses was a dirty book. I stopped watching television in 1980, and I own 10,000 books --- but not Fahrenheit 451, which I'd read about 45 years ago. This was long enough for me not to compare the film with Bradbury's text, but the message came through the movie medium loud and clear, and with a very solid punch to the plexus. The manner in which it is written, played and directed, added to its impact. This world of sleep-walkers perfectly matched what is already all around us. The style was strange, but gradually you realise that this strangeness is actually what is now completely normal. People live and work like automated morons. They can't think for themselves, and their critical faculties are almost totally atrophied. They can't conduct a stimulating conversation of any kind: in fact, present them with an idea, or attempt to initiate a discussion, and they'll often become angry. Some of the several low end reviews on this site illustrate precisely what the film depicts. Ludicrous suggestions: remake it with mad Mel Gibson. Have infantile Spielberg direct it. Bulk it out with computerised SFX. These ghastly proposals precisely reflect the mentality of the sub-humans which the film targets, and many of them seem unable to understand their own language, let alone write it, or spell it. This is a memorable film, for those whose memories still function. Unlike the Captain of the firemen.
A Powerful, Thought-Provoking Film.......2006-12-19
Francois Truffaut's English language debut "Fahrenheit 451" is based on the world famous science-fiction novel by Ray Bradbury and stars Oskar Werner and Julie Christie. The movie is about a world in which books are banned and firemen don't put fires out, but instead burn books. Werner plays Montag, one such fireman who becomes involved with a schoolteacher named Clarisse (Christie), who dares to read. Meanwhile, Montag's wife Linda (also Christie) becomes more and more worried about her husbands reading habits. That's a quick summarization of the film. The movie came out in 1968, but is still as relevant, powerful, and fresh as it was back then. Nothing in the film seems to have aged...The term "science-fiction" can turn people off, but in this film that term hardly applies. Truffaut was already world-famous director, who has made French hits like The 400 Blows and Jules & Jim (which starred Werner). Truffaut never mastered the English language, which makes this even more impressive. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to direct a film in a language you hardly understand...Let alone a good film. The casting of Julie Christie in a dual role could have been a dire mistake, but manages to work perfectly. When the two characters are on-screen, I hardly noticed (or cared) that they were the same person. Werner adds a lot of depth to his performance as Montag (a character name that you're not likely to forget), although I'm not sure if he ever did another film in English. The films cinematography is by Nicolas Roeg, who would later direct Walkabout, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and Don't Look Now (also starring Christie) and the film has the mark of a genius. The cinematography here is excellent. I've never read the book, but the movie is extraordinarily powerful. It's a film that everyone should see, and while you're at it...See some other Truffaut films too.

Let Your Passion Burn.......2006-12-10
I agree with one reviewer who said to read the book...yes, by all means, read the book and then watch this incredible film adaptation. Yes, this film is a little dated - but aren't we all. It's a little cheesy in spots, sure. But I feel that Truffaut really did Bradbury justice especially by making sure that the only things we actually saw in print were the titles of the books that were being burnt.
Both the book and the film are powerful commentaries on society. We really are becoming more and more of a society who wants everything spelled out for us. With all our technology, we have allowed our minds, our hearts, and our souls to grow flaccid and weak. We pledge our allegiance to things that really do not serve our spirit...things that slowly gnaw out our insides and make us hollow inside. I have a friend who recently bought a home that had a very nice set of built in bookcases built into the wall of the den. He took a sledge hammer to them, resurfaced the wall, and put up his 72" Plasma flatscreen.
I almost cried.
I guess it's because I love to read. I guess it's because I like to feel. I guess it's because I truly feel in the pit of my soul that this journey that we call like is such a magnificent thing, that I am disheartened by all the callousness that we, as a society, have allowed ourselves individually as well collectively to become.
I put up a review not too long ago where some people attacked and judged my enthusiasm for the film. It really kind of bothered me for a bit. Almost to the point where I wanted to stop writing reviews for things that I enjoyed and wanted others to also enjoy. Do you see what I was doing? I was letting other people's opinions have made weight and more validity than my own. That's how a society crumbles. That's how the "futuristic society" in Fahrenheit 451 allowed the Law to establish the ban on reading.
We must allow ourselves to rise up out of the ashes of our past and decide who we want to be, what we want to do, what we want to have, and where we want to go. We must do this individually and we must do this collectively. Life is much too precious to simply go on auto-pilot.
I invite you to watch this incredible movie. I invite you to see it with a group of friends. I invite you to think about it, be stirred up about it, and then decide for yourself (while you still can) what kind of life you want to bring forth.
Be the change you wish to see in the world...

The Year is 2033. Earth has been clobbered with a comet, civilization has been destroyed, and it hasn't rained in 11 years. Nearly all the water on the planet is controlled by the evil Water and Power company, which is in turn controlled by the even more evil Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell). Who stands in the way? Some mysterious mutants called the Rippers and, of course, Tank Girl. Lori Petty plays Tank Girl, the wisecracking, defiant heart of the movie, as kind of an inner child gone wild. Unfortunately Petty can't quite carry a movie on her own--her zingers frequently fall flat and she seems to be continually worried that we still like her. Luckily there's Naomi Watts as Jet Girl to save the day: smart, shy, and inherently way more appealing than Tank Girl. <I>Tank Girl</I> is based on the comic of the same name, and it is visually an eye-popper. It's worth watching for the insane set and costume designs alone. <I>--Ali Davis</I>
Description
If you're into in-your-face visuals, outrageous action sequences and non-stop explosive laughs, this is your "rip-roaring power surge of a movie" (L.A. Weekly). The year's 2033 and since a humongous meteor hit earth, the world just hasn't been the same. No Movies, No Cable TV, NO WATER!!! A mega-villain, Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell), the leader of Water & Power, holds the world in his grasp since he controls all the H2O down to the last drop...or so he thinks. Two colossal enemiesstand in his way: (1) The Rippers - an army of half-men/half-kangaroo people whose sole purpose is to bring down the W & P, and (2) a chick with a tank and tons of attitude - a.k.a. Tank Girl (Lori Petty). Kesslee had better get a grip on reality and his water jugs because not even a run in her stocking is going to stop her from saving the planet.

Comicbook Mania At It's Best!.......2007-04-07
Tank Girl is a contender for cult film status as we speak! This has to be the best film ever done in the comic character genre! It is just so funny, belly laugh, funny!!! Lorie Petty was perfection as Rebecca Buck, our own favorite Tank Girl. Naomi Watts played straight woman to Petty's manic force with equal aplomb. The Rippers(kangaroo-human mutants) added to this mix of meyham and merriment! Booga(Tank Girl's love interest)was adorable. Jeff Kober(in a very rare comedic turn for this great character actor)managed to keep Booga the vigilant warrior, yet infuse the character with the innocent, childlike qualities,as called for in the original source material! Ice-T,grumpy,profoundly arrogant, scored as the Ripper,T-Saint. Malcolm McDowell,as the wickedly dark,Kesslee, finishes out the stand-out members of the cast.
The DVD of Tank Girl was a quality production, but simply the film, itself. There were no extras and this was a bit disappointing. There was a lot of controversy between the director of Tank Girl,Rachel Talalay, and the studio over the edit of the film. It would have been just grand if a lot of the deleted footage could have been added to the DVD. A director's commentary and reflections from the cast would also have been a welcome addition. However,on the whole, the DVD of Tank Girl is well worth the buy.
Tank Girl.......2007-03-11
This film is just fun! If you like action, explosions, and to laugh. Then this one is for you.
Tank Girl DVDs.......2007-02-14
I ordered two copies of TANK GIRL, and they arrived very early in the arrival date spectrum. My only complaint is that in one copy, the center part of the inside of the DVD was broken, allowing the DVD itself to move freely inside the case. The DVD didn't get damaged, but now the case is trash.
Hysterical!.......2007-02-09
Lori Petty before she joined the reserves and met Pauly Shore. Just as funny!
Lori Petty, Lori Petty.......2007-01-04
GREAT!!!! I think Lorie Petty is a great Actress that is so under appreciated and under utilized . She is a really good actress . I would love to see her in more films. This movie is so different from any movie I have ever seen, I loved it .
Not only does it entertain but it also has a message, well really more than one message. If you appreciate movies that are different and not the same old cookie cutter movie than this one is for you! It is original, It is funny , serious , stupid and crazy but when you put it altogether you get a great Sci-Fi movie with a lot of heart. If you have never seen this movie you really should!
I can't say enough about this movie with out telling you about it. Just take a look at the cover art and you will get the idea. I really had to hunt to find this movie on DVD and I'm so glad I did. Enjoy

An inevitable idea: a working man (Michael Keaton) who can't meet all his professional and family responsibilities has himself cloned. It works so well having one copy of himself to take charge of matters at the office that he makes another copy who takes care of the home front. Pretty soon, different aspects of Keaton's personality are emphasized in the different clones: the laborer becomes a macho creep and the domestic god becomes rather feminine. A third clone, struck from the duplicates instead of the original, becomes like a photocopy of a photocopy: inferior. This timely comedy should be better than it is, but special-effects requirements are so labor-intensive that most scenes feel stiff and leaden. Keaton is good in all four parts, and in certain gee-whiz effects scenes, where he even high-fives himself, he pulls off a minor miracle or two. (Of course, a kid did the same thing in Disney's 1998 remake of <I>The Parent Trap</I>.) The DVD release includes optional widescreen and standard formats and optional French and Spanish soundtracks. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Hilarious!.......2007-05-17
Don't we all wish at one time or another that we could be in more than one place at a time. Michael Keaton is the best. I never get tired of watching this movie with the grandkids.
How much Michael Keaton is there?.......2007-01-04
Or how many? This hilarious movie does nothing to answer that question.
The premise is goofy. Doug is burning the candle at both ends and looking for more ends to burn. There just aren't enough hours in the day for one man to be contractor, father, husband, provider, and swigger of beer at the hockey game. So Doug dives straight to the core of the problem: that thing about "one man." When the chance arises, he clones himself so there can be more Doug to go around. But that Doug doesn't like the hard hours any better, so there's a third. And a fourth ...
The plot is silly and formulaic. Good, just formulaic. The real treat in this movie is Michael Keaton. If you look at his movie roles (Batman, Mr. Mom, Beetle Juice, etc, etc), he's never the same twice. He's all over the place. This is his movie. He's there four times, playing one character four ways, with four very different personalities. They move differently, talk differently, inflect differently - the four Keatons really are different. Fer cryin' out loud, Doug4 doesn't even look like Keaton most of the time, but is. This isn't a piece of cinematic art so much as a place for the many Keatons to play together, off the leash.
It's good, silly, date-movie fun. It's kid-safe. It's shallow and forgettable. But it's physical humor and fast-change personality gags at their best. If that's what you want, it's howling funny.

Don't know why it would take over a month unless it was sent pony express, even then it would of been here by now. E-mailed Amazon and received no help. A terrible experience so far.
witty funny.......2006-07-30
This movie should've done well mainstream. There's enough humor that it's not too difficult for most people to get, but yet there's enough substance for the critical thinkers, but enough humor to be silly to the so called average person. To those critics that gave this movie a bad slice was undeservedly so. How many movies can you watch where an actor can say something to the degree of "I'm sorry that I was having sex with your wife, but that it was actually you having sex with your wife because you are me?" Since cloning is not rampant yet, maybe this movie is too ahead of its time.
MacDowell is great as a wife, and Keaton is just gosh darned funny as all hell as he plays himself and all the clones in it! Must've been hard to film, especially the parts with more than one Doug at the same time. Eugene Levy is in this one too, but he doesn't play a big enough part to show his witty humorous side.

Penny Marshall directed this well-intentioned drama-comedy about a middle-aged advertising executive (Danny DeVito) whose heart has never been in his work. Fired for incompetence, DeVito's character is on the skids; but then comes an unusual job offer: Teach a bunch of boot-camp army recruits to read and think. The first-time teacher leads the uniformed men and women to an appreciation of Shakespeare, but he still has to grapple with his own problems with commitment and responsibility. Watching this film is like staring at a pool of broken eggs that never quite becomes an omelet. The story's promise is always there, but the satisfaction never quite comes. Still, there are some nice moments, and the whole thing works better on video than it did in the theaters. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Not That Funny.......2007-05-22
I was a bit disappointed in this film. It seemed to have excellent reviews here so I rented it. The first half was a total bore. I was about to stop it when it got slightly better. The concept of Danny Devito quoting and teaching Shakespeare was good but something was missing. Maybe it was a stronger story line. I did get a few good laughs in before it ended though. It was also great to see Gregory Hines again. He is greatly missed.
Renaissance Man.......2007-05-19
I think this is an excellent movie. Lots of good things to learn about life and love.
Reneissance Man.......2007-05-17
Reneissance Man is a truly feel good movie. I found it to be really funny and heartwarming, too. Kudo's on this one!
Renaissance Man movie.......2007-05-12
Although we love this movie, there was something wrong with the sound...the volume was too low, and we couldn't turn it up. When I used it in my classroom, it was very difficult for my class to hear...the same thing happened in other classes when teachers borrowed it, and when I tried it at home.
Renaissance Man.......2007-03-28
I received my order in a timely manner and a smooth, hassle-free transaction. The item was in excellent condition upon its arrival. I have not yet opened/watched the movie, but I am confident there's nothing wrong with it.

Gabriel Byrne plays Father Kiernan, a young Jesuit priest whose degree in chemistry makes him a sort of priest/detective as he investigates weeping Marys and the like around the world. Meanwhile, Frankie (Patricia Arquette), a rave-generation Pittsburgher, is afflicted with the stigmata--holes that appear in her wrists, resembling the wounds of Christ. The young woman's symptoms filter back to the Vatican and Father Kiernan is assigned to the case. The priest is puzzled by Frankie's atheism; usually the stigmata only appear on the devout (hence the age-old controversy of miracles vs. hysteria). Other manifestations appear on Frankie, and the priest's cardinal (Jonathan Pryce) is brought in, leading to political maneuvering within the Church hierarchy. The film owes a large and obvious debt to <I>The Exorcist</I> (at one point, Frankie's bed scoots across the room and she levitates into a crucifix position), but to term it an <I>Exorcist</I> rip-off would be to shortchange <I>Stigmata</I>. The premise and screenplay are more cerebral than in the l973 film, and the source of the phenomenon is coming from a completely different place.
Unfortunately, amid <I>Stigmata</I>'s high-octane editing and slick technique, the chills of <I>The Exorcist</I> aren't there, giving the movie a sort of identity crisis: horror movie or intellectual thriller? Several elements of the film challenge basic tenets of the Catholic faith, hence the brief furor that erupted at the time of the film's release; if nothing else, the internal workings of the Church are shown in a very unflattering light indeed. Byrne excels as the skeptical priest, as does Arquette as the tortured young woman. All told, <I>Stigmata</I> is a rather uneven effort, but one with a thought-provoking combination of theology and thrills served up in a thoroughly modern, stylish package. Fans of TV's <I>Ally McBeal</I> will recognize Portia DeRossi in a supporting role. <I>--Jerry Renshaw</I>
Description
A lost soul has just received the wounds of Christ and a shocking message that will alter history. Stunning performances from Patricia Arquette (True Romance), Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects) and Jonathan Pryce (Ronin) and a cutting edge score by Billy Corgan of The SmashingPumpkins and Elia Cmiral make Stigmata a visual and visceral feast (Entertainment Today). Frankie's miraculous bleeding comes to the attention of the Vatican's top investigator, Father Kiernan (Byrne). But when Cardinal Houseman (Pryce), discovers that Frankie is actually channeling an extraordinary and provocative message that could destroy the Church, he's convinced that she - and the force possessing hermust be forever silenced. Determined to stop this deadly conspiracy, Kiernan risks his faithandhis lifeto save her and the message that will change the destiny of mankind forever!

You're going down Catholic church!!!.......2007-05-14
This movie is so cool!! my oh my since im so against the catholic church you can see so many more reasons to hate the church here, so cool. The dvd comes with an exellent quality, the same ending and an additional kind of ending. subtitles in english spanish and french. Exellent movie a must see
The Gospel of Thomas.......2007-01-14
"Stigmata" is a great movie. Patricia Arquette stars as a young woman in the U.S. who shows signs of stigmata. A priest from the Vatican links up with her and cares for her as she is increasingly afflicted by the stigmata. Her ranting and raving finally begins to make sense to the priest who starts to question what his religion has stood for. This movie is good on its own account, but I love it because it introduced me to "The Gospel of Thomas," the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Nag Hammadi Bible.
The Gospel of Thomas is not satanic.......2006-10-01
An essential approach of religion, of christianism and yet the film is very disappointing. It is well built, a real thriller all along, yet there are too many lines, threads and we don't know after a while which one is the main thread. Is it the fear of the church in front of the hypothetical Gospel by Jesus himself ? Is it the possession of Franckie by the spirit of Alameida, the priest from Belo Quinto ? Is it the destiny of the priest Andrew who is invesrtigating Franckie's case and ends up protecting her against his own church ? Is it the fate that knocks at Franckie and Andrew's door ? And there are some more. This makes the ending, alternative or not, rather limited. The stigmata are not the real problem at stake here. It is not the resurgence of these stigmata on people who are called for some kind of mission by God himself that is important. In this film it is the fact that this girl who has no real religious belief is seized and even possessed by these stigmata becaue she has the rosary of the dead priest, a rosary that was sent to her by her mother who bought it at the time of the burial from a local Brazilian boy who had just stolen it from the dead priest's casket. The film thus wants us to believe the feeling of guilt coming from the theft is carried by the rosary and can haunt or possess the recipient of the stolen rosary. This is farfetched and yet it is a lot more than that because it is heavily linked to the Gospel of Thomas, an apocryphal gospel that would have been the dead priest's possession, and this would represent the fear of the church to be destroyed if it were revealed. Absurd since it has been revealed, since we can find it on the Internet, and the church is far from being dead. In other words the film neglects one thing : faith. A religion is only alive if people believe in it and people will believe in a religion if it is some kind of solace or/and support in their particular lives. This is what is not shown and what is even made senseless in the logic of the film. A dead priest becomes more powerful than God himself, to the point that the orthodox representatives of the Vatican consider the girl as possessed by the devil, and try to exhorcize her. In other words the film is kind of fuzzy on logic and messy on details.

Entertaining fiction........2006-08-06
This movie was comical as to both content and production. Yet, the producers brazenly add a concluding unscientific postscript about the gospel of Thomas discovered in 1945. This movie overdid the trashed apartment theme a la Blake Edwards of Pink Panther lore. The male voice coming from the woman probably sealed the priest's vow to remain celebite. The supernatural power in the woman that trashed the New York subway train was apparently careless of the safety of the people on the subway, as well as reckless in disregard of the insurance claims. The priests in this movie must have been modeled on the Anti Defamation League in their consummate fanaticism. The one priest was fanatical, the other a borderline libertine. Ironically, both appeal to the spirit of Hollywood and serve its purposes in giving credance to gnosticism by discrediting symbols of Christiandom. However, in its ad hominem attacks, gnostic Hollywood stays free and clear from addressing any factual questions, such as the actual dating of the socalled gospel of Thomas. If the "kingdom of God lies within you," then why are people so selfish, greedy and rotten? Gnostic Hollywood cannot answer this question. What is brainwashing? Who has that as their priority? Brainwashing creates the appearance of appealing to the intellect while all the long censoring the person from contravening facts and arguments. We don't hear both sides of the story in this film. All we get is the classic informal fallacies of appeal to emotion and ad hominem attacks. I hope the viewing public has enough self respect to pick up work written by Christian scholars who, unlike Hollywood, actually give you facts and information.
I recommend reading John A. T. Robinson's book "Redating the New Testament," or F. F. Bruce's book "The New Testament Documents: Are they Reliable," or Geisler and Nix's book "Guide to the Bible." While the canonical books clearly share an ideological parlance, they also can be dated within a few years of Christ's crucifixion. The gnostic texts don't have this merit. Furthermore, the gnostic texts are in contradiction to the teachings of the canonical texts.
Rock out, I guess.......2006-07-09
A typical, atheist, New York woman is just going about her life, "liking being me," when suddenly she starts having seizures... and after the fits wakes up to find wounds on her that match the wounds received by Christ. An investigative priest comes to figure out what's happening, and the two set out to discover what's happening, ultimately uncovering a big Vatican conspiracy.
The movie has a lot going for it, especially with an untypical character receiving the stigmata and the great cast it has built up (Patricia Arquette and Jonathan Pryce especially). It also has Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins doing the score, but that apparent benefit is also one of the film's minor failings... A score should undertone and strengthen a film's drama, but this movie with its excessive (and repetitive) fast-paced editing, directorial fat, and overfocus on the music makes it seem much more like an hour and a half long music video.
That's cool if you're wanting a music video. However, I don't imagine many people approach this film from this direction. I would have prefered more focus on the rest of the craft of the movie, but that's just me.
It's also slightly predictable in that not-good-predictable way. There's one scene that seems kind of excessive but is foreshadowed earlier, though that doesn't mean it was necessary. Overall the film just got too caught up with being some visual/musicy slamfest to slow down and think about what it was trying to do.

A FUNNY HOMAGE TO ANIMAL HOUSE & 80 SCHOOL COMEDIES!.......2007-06-08
Theres about a million more g
