Footnotes in movie books are likely to reduce this swashbuckling adventure down to a simple description: it was the first movie to star Leonardo DiCaprio after the phenomenal success of <I>Titanic</I>. As such it automatically attracted a box-office stampede of Leo's young female fans, but critical reaction was deservedly mixed. Having earned his directorial debut after writing the Oscar-winning script for Mel Gibson's <I>Braveheart</I>, Randall Wallace wrote and directed this ambitious version of the often-filmed classic novel by Alexandre Dumas. DiCaprio plays dual roles as the despotic King Louis XIV, who rules France with an iron fist, and the king's twin brother, Philippe, who languishes in prison under an iron mask, his identity concealed to prevent an overthrow of Louis' throne. But Louis' abuse of power ultimately enrages Athos (John Malkovich), one of the original Four Musketeers, who recruits his former partners (Gabriel Byrne, Gérard Depardieu, and Jeremy Irons) in a plot to liberate Philippe and install him as the king's identical replacement. Once this plot is set in motion and the Musketeers are each given moments in the spotlight, the film kicks into gear and offers plenty of entertainment in the grand style of vintage swashbucklers. But it's also sidetracked by excessive length and disposable subplots, and for all his post-<I>Titanic</I> star power, the boyish DiCaprio just isn't yet "man" enough to be fully convincing in his title role. Still, this is an entertaining movie, no less enjoyable for falling short of the greatness to which it aspired. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rather enjoyable movie.......2007-06-15

I've enjoyed this movie several times and know that it is a family hit. It shows the contrast of good and bad decisions and how they can effect an entire kingdom. The honor and loyalty of the royal guard to the people in conflict to their responsibility to their king.

I thought the acting was very good and convincing as well as the scenery and the storyline was good. It had my interest and I was left satisfied with no real unanswered questions at the end.

I would recommend watching this movie, and even adding it to your library.

5 out of 5 stars "One For All, and All For One!".......2007-04-25

This is a magnificent movie and would be a great addition to anyones' collection. The actors do an amazing job portraying the musketeers in this version of the Man in the Iron Mask. The sounds and scenery add to the wonderful ambiance created in this film. I have owned it since it came out and still enjoy watching it every time. It has one of the greatest endings of any movie I have seen, every director should strive to have an ending like this.

I guess all I can say is, if you don't at least see this movie you're missing out.

1 out of 5 stars bad acting, bad script, terrible movie.......2007-04-18

This is an unsophisticated, badly written, terribly acted movie that just doesn't work. I can't imagine what the reviewers who like it were thinking. DiCaprio is ghastly. None of the actors can read any of the lines convincingly. The damsel in distress has the most childish, silly voice.... Awful movie.

5 out of 5 stars " Nobility Is Born In The Heart ~ The Greatest Mystery Of Life Is Who We Truly Are" .......2007-02-19

After a cursory scrolling through the previous 190 reviews on this film I've come to the conclusion that the '98 release, `The Man in the Iron Mask' is one of those movies you either love or hate. As for me, I love it!

The scenery is exquisite, the soundtrack inspirational and uplifting, the storyline epic and filled with pathos and the cast is amazing. Gerard Depardeieu (Porthos), John Malkovich (Athos), Jeremy Irons (Aramis) and Gabriel Bryne (D'Artagnan) breathe new life into Dumas' musketeers mythos. Seeing these four legendary warriors gallantly charge King Louie's muskets as they fire from point blank range was as heroic a scene as I've ever seen captured on film. It gives me goose bumps just to think about it.

As for Leonardo DiCaprio, he is magnificent in the dual role of King Louis XIV of France and his twin brother Philippe. His ability to appear so arrogant, hateful and despicable as King Louie one minute and transform himself into the timid, emotional and caring Philippe a moment later is truly amazing. This is by far my favorite DiCaprio performance.

This is a film that can be watched over and over again without losing its emotional impact on the viewer. 'The Man in the Iron Mask' is a keeper, I wholeheartedly recommend that you add it to your personal DVD library.

5 out of 5 stars You're missing out if you don't buy this movie!!!.......2007-01-29

This movie is absolutely amazing. I saw it for the first time when I was eight years old and on a plane coming home from Paris. It managed to captivate my small attention span even then. Now, I'm seventeen and this is still one of my favorite movies. This movie has absolutely everything in it and I recommend it to everyone.

John Landis was the perfect director for <I>Innocent Blood</I>, a horror-comedy hybrid that does for French vampires in Pittsburgh what Landis's <I>An American Werewolf in London</I> did for hungry lycanthropes in Picadilly Square. Anne Parillaud, the sexy star of <I>La Femme Nikita</I>, is perfectly cast as a beguiling vampire who must feed regularly on human blood, and when she spots a local Mafia kingpin (Robert Loggia), she says to herself, "I think I'll try Italian!" But once the Mafioso realizes he's now an undead vampire, he goes on a rampant crusade of bloodthirsty vengeance, biting his soldiers and <I>consigliere</I> (Don Rickles, no less!) to recruit an army of undead henchmen. Pretty soon Parillaud's teamed up with an undercover cop (Anthony LaPaglia) in an attempt to stop her victims from proliferating throughout the Pittsburgh underworld. (Disconnecting the central nervous system will kill a bloodsucker, and the powerful Parillaud can snap necks as efficiently as she bites them.)

Landis keeps it all moving at a raucous pace, favoring humor without sacrificing intelligent plotting and interesting characters. Parillaud evokes sympathy even when her eyes glow fiery red and she's ripping the throats out of her victims--hey, she's only trying to survive, right? And Loggia takes one of his best-ever roles and runs with it, spouting lines of Mafioso dialogue made hilarious by the fact that he's a walking, blood-soaked corpse. Morbid humor and gruesome makeup are abundant here, as well as Landis's trademark inclusion of cameos by such horror-movie icons as Dario Argento, Sam Raimi, and monster-fan extraordinaire Forrest J. Ackerman. With tenderness, toughness, a dash of kink, and plenty of laughs, this is the kind of guilty pleasure that includes "I've Got You Under My Skin" on the soundtrack, just for the sheer enjoyment of a campy double-entendre. How can you resist? <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

1 out of 5 stars Innocent Blood.......2007-03-08

Purchased a DVD and Amazon indicated that because of that DVD I should also purchase Innocent Blood. The movie was old, very old, poor quality and not worth the money I paid, should have been in the dollar box. I only lasted 30 moinutes into the movie before I lost it.

4 out of 5 stars Just Plain Funny.......2006-12-24

I am a science fiction fan and I like some horror movies. That's NOT why I like this film. If you want unrelenting gore and true science fiction you probably should look elsewhere. But if you like unusual genre combinations you should appreciate this one. Objecting to the mix of the mafia and vampirism means that you've just missed the point entirely. I found the mix hilarious. The movie requires that you just suspend judgement, and enjoy the unfolding of the what if proposition: What if the Godfather had been bitten by a female Dracula? The fact that the screenwriter thought to ASK that question cracks me up. What is more serious and harrowing than a mafia film? To me comedy is about the surprise element, the ability to turn generally serious matters and turn them on their head. If you can allow for that, you'll be on your way to seeing how and why this film succeeds.

2 out of 5 stars Comedy?.......2006-07-19

This film fails as a comedy, it fails as a vampire film with really silly vampire effects; the vampire's eyes glow different colours depending on how she's feeling; when she's feeding madly, they're glowing red, when she's happy they're a soothing green - obviously because the director thinks the audience is so dumb as not to be able to tell without all these additional 'hints'.

When released here in Australia they had so much faith in it, that they renamed it "A French Vampire in America" in order to cash in on the fact that it was done by the same guy who did "An American Weerewolf in London" (which really does blend horror and laughs much more effectively)

But, in short this is about a French vampire in America who feeds on Italian (mafia men). She has scruples, because she only kills bad guys, then blows their head away to stop them coming back as vampires too. Dumb!

5 out of 5 stars It stars Anne Parrilaud--what more can I say?.......2006-06-30

I find Anne Parrilaud one of the most beautiful, sexy women in films, so I would give this film 5 stars even if it stunk! However, as directed by the gifted John Landis, I think that Innocent Blood is both an excellent and funny film, and deserving of five stars on that basis as well. However, with Anne being gloriously nude in two scenes, I might still be biased . . .

1 out of 5 stars DONT BUY OR RENT THIS CRAP.......2006-04-01

This is a very poor vampire film. I hate the plot story, it's just crap.

If you want to see good vampires movies try FRIGHT NIGHT - LOST BOYS - BLADE - FROM DUSK TILL DAWN. They are the best so cheak them out.

Amazon.com essential video

French director Luc Besson (<I>The Fifth Element</I>) broke the commercial taboo against female-driven action movies with this seminal, seductively slick film about a violent street punk (Anne Parillaud) trained to become a smooth, stylish assassin. Though it amounts, in the end, to little more than disposable pop, the film has a cohesiveness in style and tone--akin to the early James Bond films--that gives it a sense of integrity. Parillaud is compelling both as a wild child and chic-but-lethal pro (trained in good manners by none other than Jeanne Moreau). Tchéky Karyo is also good as the cop mentor who develops feelings for her. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars La Femme Nikita (Special Edition)..........2007-06-02

I am so torn between the original French Version and the American Remake. But, in the end, I must give the tip of my hat to the original French. An entertaining movie, all the way around!

5 out of 5 stars Original version.......2007-05-12

This movie is the French and original version of the American equivalent. It is so much better though. Unique story, lots of action (violence...) and humor, but still very people oriented. You can't be unsensitive to any of the characters.

5 out of 5 stars Femme Fatale.......2007-04-21

In the world where a woman can handle a gun and be as merciless and seemingly unemotional as any man, the anti- heroine named Nikita (Anne Parillaud in a performance of her life) is given a reprieve from a death sentence by government agents that want to use her as an undercover assassin.

Director Luc Besson made a movie that manages to keep a high level of energy and our interest - from the opening scene - a violent drugstore shootout until the very last moment.

Terrific cast include also Jean-Hughes Anglade (Queen Margot, Killing Zoe), Tcheky Karyo (Kiss of the Dragon, Addicted to Love 1997), Jeanne Moreau - the legend of the French cinema ("Jules and Jim", "Elevator to the Gallows", "Going Places"), and Jean Reno ("Leon", "Ronin")

Stylish, ultraviolent, cynical but strangely engrossing - "La Femme Nikita" is a must see for the fans of clever action movies. Don't bother with the American remake (Bridgett Fonda) or TV series with the same title - see only original.

5 out of 5 stars Nikita.......2007-03-22

I missed out on this film for years believing that it would be feminists claptrap, a type of poor mans "Dirty Harry".

How wrong I was, cracking film, a must see!

3 out of 5 stars Fonda Did it Better.......2007-01-24

As much as I do not like the Fonda name, Fonda junior did this flick no shame. USA takes the day on the re-make! This one is alright if you can get past the very '80's feel and schtickie acting. Sex Pistols and Flock of Sea Gulls should have done the sound track, but they didn't.

Description

Anne Parillaud (La Femme Nikita) is fiery, sultry and explosively funny as a movie director who'll do anything to get her shot. For director Jeanne (Parillaud), sex is no laughing matter. She doesn't find it funny that her two leading actors can't stand each other when she's about to shoot the most important moment in her film…the sex scene. The actress objects to nudity, the actor won't take off his socks, and the only thing heating up between them is their tempers. At her wits' end, Jeanne tries everything in her power to seduce, intimidate and sweet-talk her reluctant young lovers into performing the film's sexy final scene!

5 out of 5 stars Not a comedy, just another masterpiece from the great Catherine...........2007-04-29

Catherine Breillat is one of the greatest filmmakers working today. Her films are extraordinarily accurate in their depiction of the war between the sexes. Too often people are terrified of her work (both the public and the critics), because it's so truthful. This film is a companion piece to her masterpiece Fat Girl, in that it is a depiction of the making of the scene where the older sister ends up having sex with a local suitor. It is not a comedy, it is a Catherine Brelliat film. Many people rent this film thinking it's going to be fun. It's a great film, and it's not frivilous. If you admire Breillat (which you should), you should rent this. If you hate her, stay away, and it's your loss...

1 out of 5 stars Would like to give this zero stars.......2006-08-09

Well, I don't know if sex is comedy, I admit it does seem a grand cosmic absurd idea at times, but making a film about filming sex is stupid. It was pretty boring most of the time. The only interesting character was the male lead actor. He was such a pompous, vain, childish pain to work with. I wonder how many male acting stars are like him? I'm guessing too many. And I doubt if women are any better. If it wasn't for him, the film would have been a complete disaster. I refuse to recommend this to anyone except to people that are into self-torture. It's that bad.

1 out of 5 stars THE MOVIE DESCRIPTION ON AMAZON'S PAGE IS FAR MORE INTERESTING THAN THIS MOVIE.......2006-08-02

Viewing this tenuous, torpid, tedious and talky film was like living one of those nightmares where one runs and runs and gets nowhere. Perhaps the dullest movie ever made supposedly involving sex.

Or maybe involving anything. Certainly the very least-engaging, unenjoyable movie I've ever seen. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

2 out of 5 stars The Death of a Narrative in French Cinemas?.......2006-03-26

Intellectualization of a pornography in the name of love and sex and then wrap it up as a comedy. To me, this film is neither funny nor imaginative.

3 out of 5 stars A Wordy, Meandering and Tiresome Diatribe That is Anything BUT a Comedy.......2005-08-29

As one who loves films that appeal to intellectual sorties as well as those that simply tell stories, this film should have been appealing. But as written and directed by Catherine Breillat who seems to be playing out her own conundrums in filmmaking experiences, this tedious and talky film fails to arouse interest.

The main character Jeanne (Anne Parillaud) is the screen form of Breillat, a director frustrated in her attempts to film a convincing sex scene with two difficult actors (Grégoire Colin is The Actor and Roxane Mesquida is The Actress). The one 'comic' bit is Jeanne's imposing the use of a dildo strapped onto the Actor in order for her to drive the sex scene to fruition, but even this sight gag wears thin quickly and we are left with a film within a film that feels more like a 'Deleted Scenes' featurette on a DVD than a solid French comedy with class. The visual sophistication of director Vincent Ward (The Navigator, What Dreams May Come) pulls us through this often awkward chronicle of the lifelong star-crossed passion shared by a Canadian Eskimo boy (Jason Scott Lee, from Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) and the mixed-race girl (La Femme Nikita's Anne Parillaud) he meets and falls in love with as a child. (A glowering Patrick Bergin is the third corner of the triangle.) Flamboyant sequences, like an amorous clinch on top of a billowing dirigible, and the heartfelt grandeur of the Arctic landscapes, are almost enough to compensate for the clunky transitions and the melodramatic excesses of the storytelling. Almost. Ward's first film, The Navigator (not to be confused with The Flight of...), is a visionary oddity that gives a much clearer indication of the way his work was heading: into the upper atmosphere. --David Chute

Description

From the acclaimed director of WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, MAP OF THE HUMAN HEART is a visually stunning love story that would last a lifetime! When a half-Eskimo boy named Avik (Jason Scott Lee -- DRAGON: THE BRUCE LEE STORY) leaves his Arctic home with a British mapmaker (Patrick Bergin -- BENEATH LOCH NESS) to seek medical attention in Canada, it marks the first steps in an epic personal journey. In Montreal Avik meets Albertine (Anne Parillaud -- LA FEMME NIKITA), a half-Indian girl with whom his life will be forever linked. Spanning decades and distance through war and adversity, their star-crossed relationship becomes a grand romantic adventure of never-ending intensity! Featuring a memorable appearance by big-screen favorite John Cusack (RUNAWAY JURY) -- you'll agree with critics everywhere who raved about this outstanding motion picture!

5 out of 5 stars A Story of Enduring Love.......2007-02-20

A different love story that follows the life of an Eskimo boy from his life as a child in a barren frozen land to the horrors of war as an adult & the love he carries throughout this journey of a young girl he met while lonely & frightened in a Sanatorium recovering from tuberculosis.Just a beautiful & sometimes heart rending story..

4 out of 5 stars The odyssey through life of an Inuit named Avik (a.k.a. "Holy Boy!").......2006-07-07

There is an inherent sense of wonder to the story of an Inuit that can begin in the frozen arctic of Canada and takes him to the firebombing of Dresden during World War II. In 1931 young Avik (Robert Joamie) sees an airplane land on the ice, and meets Walter Russell (Patrick Bergin), a mapmaker. The boy exhibits some curiosity in Russell's surveyor gear and says "Holy Boy" instead of "Holy Cow," which apparently endears him enough to Russell that when he discovers Avik is suffering from tuberculosis he takes the boy to Montreal. The cure is painful enough, but Avik also has to deal with the attentions of Sister Banville (Jeanne Moreau), who wants to turn him and the other native children into good little white children. But Avik forms a friendship with young Albertine (Annie Galipeau) that forges a link for life.

What Avik and Albertine most share in common is that they are trapped between two worlds: he is half white and half Eskimo while she is half white and half Indian. When they are separated again it is her desire to one day sing a song on the wireless that becomes the key to their connecting once again as adults. As an adult, Avik (Jason Scott Lee) is considered a curse to his tribe and they want nothing to do with him, so when Russell returns and explains that the world is at war, Avik decides to enlist. He becomes a photographer in a bomber, named "Holy Boy!" of course, recording the affects of bomb strikes, and one day Albertine (Anne Parillaud) finds him. She is also in the military and her job is to analyze strike photographs, which affords some rather interesting ways for him to communicate with her as the war continues.

There is a framing device for this story, as Avik tells his story in flashback to a new mapmaker (John Cusack), who has come into the frozen north. The relationship between Avik and Albertine certainly has its moments, especially when it gets above the group, a motif that is repeated throughout the film often enough for us to catch on to its significance. The figure of Russell continues to figure largely in Avik's life, but when it involves Albertine as well I was uncomfortable with the turn of events. But the narrative builds to such a point that a great leap forward in time and space is mandated to be able to tell the ending of the tale. There are exquisite and memorable scenes to be sure in the final act as director Vincent Ward tries to have his film take wing. In this regard it will succeed with some and with others not so well, but regardless of which camp you find yourself in at the end, it is certainly worth the watching.

5 out of 5 stars The Eskimo Patient.......2006-04-26

Holy boy, ***** you...if you haven't seen this movie yet, then you have indeed missed a gem. Simply relax and travel thru time, both magic and tragic.

5 out of 5 stars A missed Gem.......2006-04-02

This is one of those missed gems that you wish you'd heard more about sooner, but are grateful someone helped you stumble upon it. Map of the Human heart is a tale you won't forget. A mapmaker sits in repose at a bar and is forced to hear a story from what at first glance appears to be a 'loser' Inuit. But soon his heart is captured by the Inuit's tale of a lost love, missed opportunities, the ravages of WWII and all the scars we collect along the way. The story digs deep into different cultures and everything that affects all of us as human beings. You'll find yourself holding your breath for a happy ending...

As much as I do not like the Fonda name, Fonda junior did this flick no shame. USA takes the day on the re-make! This one is alright if you can get past the very '80's feel and schtickie acting. Sex Pistols and Flock of Sea Gulls should have done the sound track, but they didn't.

5 out of 5 stars I Wish More People Could See This.......2006-04-30

This is one of the great "unknowns" in the movie world: a great film seen by very few people. I'm still waiting for the DVD but not holding my breath. Thankfully, my VHS is still good. But like anything good, we'd like to share this with others and most people have never heard of this movie.

For those sensitive souls who enjoy a fascinating portrait of an unusual person or persons that is both sad and uplifting, this is your ticket. It has both, in spades.....a haunting film you can't forget. It's a tragic tale yet has a happy ending of sorts and leaves you feeling satisfied.

What it is, and I can't remember if it is based on real-life situation, is the story of a woman who has a dwarf for a son and what happens to the two of them, beginning in France, moving to Ireland, over to the United States and then back to Ireland.

Along the way, the mother, played so sadly by French actress Anne Parillaud (the original La Femme Nikita), gets involved with two men: Gabriel Byrne and Matt Dillon. All three of these adults are really interesting, likable people, but nothing like the dwarf, who is played magnificently by two actors. Alan Pentony plays "Frankie" has a child and a more lovable kid would be hard to find. Corbin Walker does a great job of playing the adult "Frankie." Trust me: you will not forget either of them.

Walker narrates the film, telling it mostly in flashback style, from his best-selling book. In addition to his mom and the two father-figures in his life, is a short story of Frankie's love affair with astronomy and the stars, hence "Frankie Starlight."

The only profane character in the movie is the book publisher who has two short scenes. That, and two quick sex scenes, give it the "R" rating. Otherwise, this is wonderful old-fashioned storytelling, the kind that makes you really care about the characters.

5 out of 5 stars This will be one you remember for all the days of your life.......2002-08-13

There are very few films that are so well told, and uniquely and beautifully so, that when you come across one that touches you so tenderly, it will never leave you. I will never forget seeing this film, and will probably need to watch it a few more times in my lifetime. It's like a very good book, a familiar friend, that you greet again and again over the years, and remember after a brief moment. Pure peotry.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2000-10-26

Noel Pearson, who produced My Left Foot, is the man who also gives us the delightful Frankie Starlight, a movie based on the equally delightful book by Chet Raymo, The Dork of Cork. Frankie Starlight, like The Dork of Cork, is a story that encompasses love, life and sometimes, even miracles.

Set in post-World War II Ireland, Frankie Starlight is the story of Frankie and his beautiful French mother Bernadette. At the age of eighteen, Bernadette left France and traveled to Ireland, smuggled aboard an American ship. Once in Ireland, Bernadette gives birth to a son, Frankie. With the help of a customs officer, Jack Kelly, she is able to raise Frankie in Dublin.

Astronomy plays a big part in this movie as Jack teaches Frankie about the stars, instilling in the young boy a lasting obsession with the cosmos.

As an adult, Frankie writes a novel based on his love for astronomy and his mother's recollections of her long-past relationship with and ex-GI. Frankie's book is the catalyst that pulls him out of his life of isolation, and as it does, we learn just how his mother's exploits helped to shape Frankie's own life.

Although Raymo is a lecturer in astronomy at Stonehill College in Massachusetts, he spends every summer in Vantry, County Kerry, Ireland. His love for both Ireland and the stars is readily apparent in both the book and in the movie.

The story of Frankie Starlight spans thirty years and is set in France, Ireland and in the United States. It was shot on location in Ireland. The French village scenes were shot on a constructed village on a farm in County Kildare and the Normandy scenes on beaches on the eastern coast of Ireland.

The central character, Frank Bois, is played by Alan Pentony and Corban Walker. Pentony, who is from Drogheda, especially embodies qualities that make up the essence of Frank Bois: youth, warmth and friendly appeal.

Frankie's beautiful French mother is played by Anne Parillaud. Parillaud, who read the scrip, called and asked for the part. Coincidentally, Raymo used a photo of the lovely Parillaud as inspiration when writing Bernadette's scenes in The Dork of Cork.

Gabriel Byrne, who plays Jack Kelly said, after reading the script, "I thought it was very simply written. It was just one of the best things I had read in a long time."

Frankie Starlight is a magical movie, one filled with leprechauns and shamrocks and magic. The kind of magic that only the Irish can evoke, but the kind of magic that anyone can love.

3 out of 5 stars It's a sad movie.......1999-11-08

The soundtrack is incredible and you'll find yourself humming that haunting chord long after the movie. The movie is kinda sad though - the contrast between the life of the main character as a child and the life he lives as an adult is stark. Each time I see the movie, I always wonder why his mother chose to leave the USA and go back to Ireland. The scene when they arrive back in Dublin and to the apartment they used live in after the freedom they experience in the US makes me want to leave my apt and drive somewhere! I typically don't like Irish movies but this one is good

4 out of 5 stars Sweet, powerful, and wonderful film.......1998-08-28

This is one of the sweetest films I have ever seen. It's main character, Frankie Bois, is incredibly endearing. I wanted to give him a big hug. The cast is amazing with the great Gabriel Byrne and Matt Dillon. I just loved this movie. It calls out to your heart and soul. It was just great. Also, set in Ireland which makes it all the better. There are times when Raul Ruiz's maddening and mesmerizing film resembles a direct-to-video erotic thriller in which rampant clichés collide in scenes surreal in their straight-faced silliness. And there are moments when the fractured narrative and stylistic shards create a sophisticated study in alienation and disconnection. These elements often coexist in the same scenes. Ruiz is a master craftsman whose cinematic intelligence is put to the process of storytelling as much as to the telling of stories. Here he has two tales that intertwine through dreams and fantasies, bouncing off of and commenting on one another. Anne Parillaud stars as a lethal, world-weary assassin in the first and as a skittish, wide-eyed newlywed in the other. When one falls asleep the other wakes up, as if it were all a dream, but we're never sure which one (if either) is real. When the assassin takes a job that targets her lover (William Baldwin) and the newlywed suspects her husband (Baldwin again) of a plot against her life, it becomes clear that their relationship is far more than a schizophrenic split. Pinging against the narrative sophistication and deliriously rich images are creaky B-movie twists and hoary performances by Baldwin and femme fatale Lisanne Falk. The result is a film that defies its own conventions, like a parody of bad thrillers executed with the assured brilliance of a cinematic genius. It may not always work, but it never fails to astonish. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

4 out of 5 stars Does the story sound like Mr. and Mrs Smith but it was told in a different way?.......2007-06-12

From What I see it gave me the connection between these 2?
Does anybody think so?

3 out of 5 stars "Where does the dream end and reality begin?".......2002-10-26

In "Shattered Image," the line between reality and fantasy is blurred when two characters (both played by Anne Parillaud) start appearing in each other's dreams. Like the majority of actors in this movie (William Baldwin, Lisanne Falk, and Graham Greene), Parillaud plays dual roles: one being a weak young woman named Jessie Markham who recently married Brian (Baldwin) and is currently honeymooning in Jamaica with him; the other Jessie is a blunt hit woman who is hired to kill Conrad Reynolds (also played by Baldwin). Their lives begin to intertwine and mirror each other's as the movie progresses, cumulating in a somewhat predictable ending.

"Shattered Image" had the potential to be a good erotic thriller, but with a bad script and poor acting, it didn't quite make it that far. William Baldwin does make for pleasant eye candy, but I bought this movie mainly for Anne Parillaud, who I thought was terrific in "La Femme Nikita," playing a role similar to the one in this movie--an assassin. However, "Shattered Image" doesn't have as much appeal as "La Femme Nikita." In fact, I found very little appealing about this movie. It's long, complex, and hard to follow. I had to replay it a couple of times to really understand what was going on, and even now I'm not so sure I get it. Besides the cinematography, I can't find very much else worth praising about this movie. Unless you're a big fan of one of the actors or actresses, I'd skip this one.

3 out of 5 stars Worth a See! 3 1/2 stars!.......2000-09-26

Even though this film is a bit slow-moving, it is worth a see! Anne Parrillaud seems to go back and forth between two dreams -- and the viewer tries to figure out which one is reality. I figured out what was going on before it ended -- so I won't give it away, but if you've ever wondered what it's like to be in a coma and come out of it -- then this film is worth the watch. From the point of view of someone who has been in a coma for 5-6 weeks and has come out of it, it's a scary place to be and this film is one of the only films that I think could give someone an idea of what the experience is like.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of time.......2000-09-25

What can I say? After wasting too much time watching it, the movie still made no sense to me at the end. I like movies that make sense, or have some artistic unity. The acting was poor and flat in tone, perhaps because the actors were constantly asking themselves "How did I let myself get trapped into making this movie?".

3 out of 5 stars Worth a look for fans of off-beat cinema.......1999-09-18

The film is strange...it's best to watch it having no concept of what's going to happen, so I'm certainly not going to spill the beans, suffice to say it's a film sure to attract a cult following.
