4 out of 5 stars Great but missing something........2007-06-19

To begin, I like this show. Can't help it. This is one of the few television series I actually watch with any kind of frequency or deliberation. I enjoy the story, charaters, special effects, and a dozen other things...But like any real fan, I find myself discussing futilely with my family (who are also hooked) what should be changed. The series has gotten progressively darker and unlike in other seasons, the sixth season doesn't seem to have any feel-good episodes to releave the intensity. And also, this close to donning a cape and no one is going to recognize Clark? Time to pick up those glasses! And considering all the powers Clark has now, I wonder why the Robin Hood copycat (aka...) and his team weren't a little more impressed. I mean, he should be so out of their league! Still, I intend to buy it. Though there may be some episodes I woudn't care to watch too many more times, I especially enjoyed "Sneeze", "Rage", "Subterranean", "Tresspass", and "Noir" (Tom Welling does a great Clumsy Clark). I think "Justice" could have been worked a little more but it was good, too. Then there was "Combat" which was tough but amazing. All in all, definitely worth owning.

3 out of 5 stars The Good, The Bad, and The Bizarre.......2007-06-12

This season for me was disappointing. To me this was not ventage Smallville. The season premiere, the season finale, the wedding, and an episode here and there, were actually ok. But to me it seems like when Smallville moved to The CW, the graphics weren't even close to last season's. In this season, the focus was actually more on the supporting characters (Lex, Lana, Chloe, etc.) rather than Clark. Which is fine, but I just think they should have given them better storylines than what they had. And I know that The CW network had to have budget cuts, but even the shows they showed in high definition (Smallville, Gilmore Girls, etc.) just looked better last year on The WB than they do on The CW. I brought that up because the graphics on Smallville just seemed to be used more towards the season premiere and finale and not the rest of the season. I mean bottomline, this season was disappointing with some of the storylines and the development of the characters wasn't up to the level it should have been. I mean if it was up to me, I would just download the episodes I enjoyed, and not buy the season 6 box set. But if you are a die-hard Smallville/Superman fan, then this set is for you. I was just hoping for something more concrete this season than what they put out.

5 out of 5 stars This show never stops giving........2007-06-11

I have all of the previous seasons on DVD and granted some shows I skip more often than others but as a whole this show probably has the best short-tern and long-term story arcs of any show I've watched on Television. Even the most boring shows keep my attention and wanting to see next weeks episode to find out what happens. This season like others finished up some old story lines and started created some new ones. Lana's "birth" and Chloe's metor power is probably the most interesting and will probably be explored next season. Can't wait to get this boxset!

5 out of 5 stars A highly entertaining season .......2007-06-05

I came into the Superman myth through Smallville, as I suspect many fans of this series did. This season was highly entertaining from start to finish, with darker, more adult themes than previous seasons. I love the fact that Chloe was made a "superfreak" and the introduction of her mother, played by the fabulous Linda Carter was brilliant. Despite her death at the end of Season Six, I don't really think she's dead... that would be too easy and there was nothing officially released regarding Allison Mack's departure. BTW, is it too much to ask for Chloe to appear on the cover of one of these DVD box sets? She may be the only made up character on the series (who was not in the actual Superman mythology before), but c'mon she's important to the series. I enjoyed Chloe's relationship with Jimmy, as well as Lois' relationship with the Green Arrow. As far as Clark and Lana, I hope the writers use the seventh (and I think final) season of the series (since Tom Welling, Michael Rosemnbaum, Allison Mack, and Kristin Kreuk are all contracted for seven) to finally wrap up this perpetually pointless romance. We all know the outcome... I also enjoyed Lex Luther's continuing transition to the dark side.

3 out of 5 stars Smallville...More like "Clarke's Creek ".......2007-06-02

I know it's season 6 but c'mon. I know that more than enough people have some gripes about this show by now. They start off good with the Season Premiere. And as usual, once they get your hopes up, they follow up the series with slow, dragging episodes. I think the whole "I luv Lana, I need Lana, I can't live without Lana," thing is pretty old. I know that in the comics Clark and Lana hooked up in Smallville. And she also knows his secret when he becomes Superman. But for goodness sake, Get over the girl already. She has become so annoying in this show. I hope that (Spoiler)she's gone for good, even though we all know, or should now that she ain't dead. She obviously faked it (with the big white truck blocking Luthor, and the screen, from getting to her right before the car blows).
Another thing I hate is how they produce one episode like "Justice" which introduces a mini-Justice League to get everybody hype and then leave you out to dry with some bad followup episodes. Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) was stealing the show with some great acting. I think he took the spotlight off of nice ol' Clark. 'Till they got rid of him. It seems like they save all the good stuff for the Season Premieres, one or two good episodes in the middle and the Season Finale. C'mon. That ain't right.
And when is Clark gonna learn to fly. The only time he fly's is when someone takes over his body or he wears that stupid red ring. We are all getting tired of his running around all over the place. And when are they gonna stage some decent fight scenes for good ol' kid-Supes. 1 punch is not good enough for a future Superman. The cinematic style for the show has gotten better but theres not enough ACTION to go with it.
On the bright side. I like Lex. He's cunning and sly and evil. Exactly what Lex should be. This Season could have been good. But it wasn't. I know the finale got everybody hype with Bizarro and all that nonsense. But I'm not falling for that hook again.

Description

After Superman: The Movie's epic storytelling and Superman II's awesome battles, how could the first two hits be topped? In Superman III, meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a half-witted computer programming natural. For him a keyboard is a weapon - and Superman faces the microelectronic menace of his life. Christopher Reeve reprises his most beloved role, deepening his character's human side as Clark Kent reunites with old flame Lana Lang (Annette O'Toole) at a Smallville High class reunion. And when Superman becomes his own worst enemy after Kryptonite exposure, Reeve pulls off both roles with dazzling skill. Incredible visual effects abound - but above all it has heart, heroism and high-flying humor. All in superabundance.

3 out of 5 stars My First Superman Film!.......2007-02-15

I first saw this when I was just a kid, My earliest memory of Superman is from this film.(At the begining with the car filling with water and superman rescues the guy trapped inside)
Even though I know this film compared to the previous 2 films is very poor!
I still love it.
And this deluxe version really improves on the crappy release we got back in 2001.
A must have for any Superman fan and the last decent(ish) Christopher Reeve Superman before everything went down the plug hole in the 4th film.

1 out of 5 stars I wanted to give it no stars, but it wouln't let me.......2007-01-21

This is THE worst Superman film ever, it might even be the worst movie ever made!!!! If you want a good superman film DVD collection like I have, here's a list:
Superman: The Movie 4-Disk set
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Superman Returns 2-Disk set
Unfortunatly you get less movies this way, but they're makind a sequal so hopefully it'll be good, however you'll have to wait unyl 2009, so my advice, watch Superman cartoons, read Superman comics, and all that other stuff, then 2009 will be here before you know it! Just don't watch this (and don't watch IV either.)

5 out of 5 stars SuperGREAT.......2007-01-11

Before writing this review, I viewed the others on this page and I am afraid that my view differs greatly from all but one of theirs. When I first saw this movie I was about 4 or 5 and found it to be fun and exciting. In experiencing these four films on DVD in a widscreen movie format as an adult I think Superman 1 through 3 are equally fantastic. What I liked about Superman 3 is precisely what most everyone else seemed to dislike, the lighter more humorous approuch to the story. I thought it was a nice change from the first two films which were very serious, excellent, but serious. It was in the same vain as Star Trek 4 The voyage Home, which was very light, humourous and adventurous. I thought it was a fitting change of pace from the first three, which delt with some very heavy issues as did the first two Superman Films. The new villain in this film was also a nice change, luther had already appeared in the first two, so having superman face off with someone unkown to him was great. I absolutely loved Richard Pryor in this, he was just so funny and his wonderful comic style helped bring a lighter air to this movie. I Agree with the other reviewers that Richard Donner is an excellent director and should not have been replaced, not to take anything way from Mr. Lester who I thought did a great job with Superman 3. I appreacated all of the opinions I read, as a superman fan who takes the quality of the films seriously, it is good to see that there are others as protective of the super film legacy as I.

Thanks for a great Movie Mr. Reeve and Warner Brothers

2 out of 5 stars Superman vs. A.I........2007-01-06

In "Superman III" Superman (Chrisopher Reeve) must battle misguided computer Gus (Richard Pryor) and truelly evil billionaire Ross Webster who use a new kind of artificial intelligence to gain control of the world's oil supply. Meanwhile Clark is back in Smallville romancing young mother and former childhood sweetheart Lana Lang (Annette O'Toole, who ironically plays Martha Kent in "Smallville" TV show).

This is the point in the series when the producers stopped taking Superman seriously. Richard Lester has a reputation in slapstick comedy, and that's where he should have stayed. This movie is too jokey and funny for it's own good. Not that it's all bad, the living computer was a good idea, and I think it was originally supposed to be regular Superman villain Brainiac. And twin Superman was also good, with shades of Bizaro. Too bad they didn't use those villains instead of the Richard Pryor, who is terminally miscast as a supervillian. When Gene Hackman refused to reappear as Lex Luthor they gave the part to Robert Vaughn, not a bad idea, just not right. The battle at the end with the zombie robot was a horrible idea, a scene that is more likely to scare kids than entertain them.

The good things is the sweet relationship between Clark and Lana. It has always been known (even before the show) that Clark still holds a torch for Lana, and this really concretes the idea. Also you can see that while Clark knows the need for Superman, he is also a little tired of his super alter ego, and the twin fight of Clark and Superman is a good example of the internal struggle, actually well done, I must give Lester credit for that much.

Not bad, but the "Superman"series has fallen a long way since "Superman II".

5 out of 5 stars Best Superman movie!.......2006-12-19

This is by far my most favorite superman movie. I've been waiting for 16 years for this "Making of Superman 3" to go on sale officially. I bought this dvd from amazon as soon as it got out and I don't regret it. The picture Quality of the main film seems better on this deluxe edition and the quality of picture on the documentary is superb. In additional scenes there is actually just one scene involving superman, and all the others revolve around richard pryor. Still for any Superman 3 fan this dvd is obligatory.

Is there anything scarier than clowns? Of course not. And who knows scary better than Stephen King? You see where we're going. <I>It</I> puts a malevolent clown (given demented life by a powdered, red-nosed Tim Curry) front and center, as King's fat novel gets the TV-movie treatment. Even at three hours plus, the action is condensed, but an engaging <I>Stand by Me</I> vibe prevails for much of the running time. The seven main characters, as adolescents, conquered a force of pure evil in their Maine hometown. Now, the cackling Pennywise is back, and they must come home to fight him--or, should we say, It--again. Admitting the TV-movie trappings and sometimes hysterical performances, this is a genuinely gripping thriller. As so often with King, the basic idea (the bond formed during a childhood trauma) is clean and powerful, a lifeline anchored in reality that leads us to the supernatural. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Description

Based on the King Of Horror's 1986 Best Seller, "It" is a jittery, jolting excursion into personal fear. "It" raises goosebumps-and brings out the stars. Harry Anderson, Dennis Christopher, Annette O'Toole, Tim Reid, John Ritter, Tim Curry and Richard Thomas star in this thriller about a malevolent force in a small New England town.

4 out of 5 stars A good thriller.......2007-06-19

A really good, thriller movie. I have always been afraid of clowns. (Even before watching this) Very bloody. An awesome plot. The charectors are grown people in Part 1 or 2 of the movie, I think. Then they have flashbacks to when they were kids, and IT use to haunt them. Only those 5 people can see it, and damage IT leaves.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S a deal!.......2007-06-02

I can remember watching "It" as a child, and falling in love with the movie. As soon as I could, I bought it on video. When I'm bored, or there's nothing to watch on tv, I would put my tape it. After wearing it out to the point of no return, I went on the hunt for the DVD. Finding it at such a great price was a deal I couldn't refuse. I never realized how much I really destroyed my tape til I saw it on DVD. Thanx!

One of the best movies based on Stephen Kings books! When I first saw it it scared the hell out of me!!

Nobody knows what it looks like but a clown.

5 out of 5 stars It returns to 2007.......2007-05-09

I have been a fan of Stephen King for years, It (the movie) was one of my fav's growing up, this move scared the holy crap out of me when i was young, it scared me so bad, that I really didn't want to brush my teeth, take a bath, or anything else that had to do with a drainage of some type! you take a scary, alien clown, put it in the sewers, have it chop up a few kids, and haunt the kids of the past, all the way up to their adult years, it's just creepy, but creepy fun, this is one to turn the lights off on and cuddle up with someone to watch and be jolted!

Paul Schrader, the director of American Gigolo, brought a similar kind of sexual chic to this explicit horror movie. A remake of the beautiful, haunting 1942 Cat People, this version takes off from the same idea: that a woman (Nastassja Kinski), a member of a race of feline humans, will revert to her animalistic self when she has sex. Arriving to meet her brother (Malcolm McDowell) in New Orleans, she finds herself disturbed by his sexual presence. A zoo curator (John Heard) becomes fascinated by her, but he will discover that her kittenish ways are just the tip of the claw. Schrader dresses the story up in a stylish, glossy production, keyed on Kinski's green-eyed, thick-lipped beauty; it's hard to think of another actress in 1982 who could so immediately suggest a cat walking on two legs. Luckily Kinski had a European attitude toward her body, because this film has plenty of poster-art nudity. There's also lots of gore and some wacky flashbacks to the ancient tribe of cat people, who hold rituals in an orange desert while Giorgio Moroder's music plays. Cat People doesn't really make all this come together, but it's always interesting to look at, and the dreadful mood lingers. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Stylish Directing Saves A Flat Story.......2007-06-13

The plot: A beautiful 20 year old orphan Nastassja Kinski is reunited with her brother, Malcolm McDowell in New Orleans. Without explanation McDowell disappears and is sought for cannibalizing prostitutes.

Kinski ends up falling for zoologist John Heard whom handles large cats at the local zoo. Predictably the zoo's jaguar turns out to in fact be McDowell who escapes and reveals to Kinski how their family is cursed to turn into jaguars every time they make love. Only the act of murdering a human can return them to form. Hence the only safe sex is inbreeding. While McDowell kills without conscious the virgin Kinski despises her affliction.

This remake of the 1942 cult classic could should have come up with better title.

While the plot is bland the directing keeps it alive, similar to Michael Mann's `Manhunter' the New Orleans setting is used to its full effect as well as David Bowie's haunting score.

The opening sequence is noting short of awesome. In a haze of red we see an ancient civilization sacrificing children to jaguars by tying them to a grotesque tree without fruit or leaves. It is unclear if they are to be eaten by or mate with the jaguars. But this sacrifice creates the cat people.

I was astounded that this opening sequence of a mystical tree was in fact plagiarized by the film `The Exorcism of Emily Rose.'

A fair warning about `Cat People', everyone gets naked. Yes, everyone. While nudity is nothing new to McDowell and Kinski, John Heard and even Annette O'Toole's exposure is shocking. I wonder why O'Toole never used her assets to further her career.

CAT PEOPLE is basically a cross between a werewolf movie & a vampire movie. Like a werewolf movie, it involves people transforming into animals (in this case, black panthers). Like a vampire movie, it is heavy on eroticism and sensuality.

The film stars Nastassja Kinski as a young woman who goes to visit her brother (Malcom McDowell) for the first time in many years. She soon finds out that she carries the family "curse" of going into a metamorphosis and becoming a leapord.

Nastassja is PERFECT for this part as she has a slender, curvy, feline body. It matches up with her becoming a leapord very nicely. Annette O'Toole is quite attractive too, with more of a girl-next-door type of beauty. Best of all, both girls look absolutely fantastic topless!

If you like erotic thrillers / werewolf movies / vampire movies, my guess is that CAT PEOPLE will more than likely be to your liking. It is sultry, sexy and entertaining in a feline sort of way.

5 out of 5 stars Erotic & Eerie***possible spoiler alert***.......2007-05-19

Immediately Giorgio Moroder's score captures you in the darkness with
its sensual rhythms, then Schrader entices us into a labyrinthine
journey of sex and death seen through the eyes of the dark & beautiful
Irena (Kinski). Her brother Paul, played by a Malcom McDowell welcomes
Irena to New Orleans ( a perfect location for this erotic & fetishistic
tale ) dressed as a priest, this is their first 'reunion' since infancy
& orphanage. Paul takes her home and introduces her to his housekeeper
Female (played by the great Ruby Dee). Their joy is short lived, as
Paul's incestuous overtures are rebuffed by an innocent Irena and his
disappearance coincides with a visit by the police to investigate
Paul's possible involvement in a 'ritualistic' murder involving a
panther. Female is arrested as a possible accomplice to Paul's crimes.
In jail, she advices Irena to 'not love' and 'pretend the world is what
men believe it to be'. Irena is quickly taken in by Oliver ( John Heard
), curator of the New Orleans Zoo, after he startles her sketching a
recently captured black panther. Irena settles into a life working at
the zoo and begins a relationship with Oliver, much to the dismay of
Alice ( Annette O'Toole ), ostensibly Oliver's love interest until
Irena's arrival. Paul resurfaces after a tragic attack by the panther
on a zoo keeper (played by Ed Begley, Jr.) in front of Irena, Alice &
Oliver. Paul's presence is now menacing and his previous advances are
now violent and threatening. He tells Irena that 'only she can save
him': by being with him as they are like their parents- brother &
sister and of an ancient and incestuous race, unable to mate with only

I love this movie. Great music, Nastassja Kinski is Hot. Very sexy and stylish.

4 out of 5 stars Cat people or kitties in training?.......2007-03-14

This movie is interesting enough to watch, but in the end, I felt a need for more. First off, considering that technically it was a remake of the 1942 movie of the same title, it's much better than the original. I don't think that should do a sequel, unless it was in the format of a prequel (then they could have a younger guy for Malcolm MacDowell's role, cause he's definitely too old to play young now). I would like to know how MacDowell's character came to realize what he was and how he accepted to live the life that he did.

Ebulliently imaginative and far more cleverly presented than you would expect from a TV miniseries, this satirical adventure succeeds by never pandering to the lowest common denominator. Closely based on Jonathan Swift's 1726 classic, it is enhanced by dazzling special effects from Jim Henson Productions and a superb, multi-ethnic cast. The biggest surprise is Ted Danson in the title role--one of his best performances, even if he is the only person in England without an accent. He conveys amusement, amazement, and intelligence as he travels from one strange country into another. Not that anyone back in Merry Old England believes Mr. Gulliver's tales of little people or giants. The story is told in flashback from an insane asylum, where he is forcibly confined. This far outshines several previous adaptations of Swift's satirical novel. --Rochelle O'Gorman

4 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2007-05-26

Most films on Gulliver's travels show Lilliputian and not much else. This movie tries to follow the book. Overall they did a good job.

The story was well done. The guy comes back after a long-time and tells people what he has seen. Of course no-one believes such stories of small people, giants, flying castles and intelligent horses. He has to prove that he is sane.

The acting was good. I liked the scene where he is explaining to the audience in the madhouse, how he was flying in the air in a castle.

5 out of 5 stars Long way out for a short way home.......2007-05-17

Gulliver the book and Gulliver the movie are different but, after a while, the difference stops being important. In the book, Gulliver is superior to all of his adventures. He possesses a perspective on the whims and eccentricities of kings in a writing meant as a criticism of all who hold themselves superior. The movie Gulliver enjoys his status at court. His sincere explanations/justifications of England's political practices seem even more ridiculous in the telling than in the reading. What movie Gulliver finally focuses on are the relationships between himself and his wife and son. They remained faithfull to him despite his having abandoned them. The wife's defense for her husband is that Gulliver has harmed no one. The son's providing the critical piece of evidence deflects the prosecution. Gulliver discovers that everything that he left home to find was already there. The book Gulliver remains aloof from everyone.

Dear Sirs, I have not received the order so far. I only wish I have.

5 out of 5 stars J. Swift would be proud.......2007-03-08

This is almost the perfect movie for the book. Though they invented a framed narrative that wasn't in the book, it makes the movie so much more powerful and believable. It also unifies the story under one overarching narrative.

Really memorable performance by Ted Danson. It's hard to imagine anyone else as Lemuel Gulliver now.

5 out of 5 stars Special effects almost in the same league as those in Star Wars........2006-12-25

The film is told by way of flash backs. Gulliver (Ted Danson) finds himself ashore in England after a harrowing nine year absence from home. Unfortunately, once back at home in England, he suffers from periodic flashbacks wherein he provides narratives about his adventures in Lilliput, Brobdingnag, on a flying island, and elsewhere. Also unfortunately, even his wife (Mary Steenbergen; wife in real life too) does not believe the contents of his flash-back narratives. For example, towards the end of the movie she is asked if she believes her husband. Instead of saying "no," she avoids the question by replying, "I believe in him."

Everybody will be able to enjoy the brightly colored pomp and fanfares found in the various kingdoms that are encountered during Gulliver's travels. The special effects are almost as good as those found in the early Star Wars movies. Unlike most adventure movies, the movie under review has a high degree of character development. The credentials of the actors, e.g., Peter O'Toole, speak for themselves. Excellent "character actors" are also found, such as the rustic wheat farmer who discovers Gulliver and displays him in a one-man circus. In addition to the special effects, the presence of a boy character (Gulliver's son) and a girl character (wheat farmer's daughter) enhance the attraction of the film for kids.

What the movie is really "about" is not tiny villagers, flying islands, or talking horses. What the movie is really about is certain bizarre aspects of the social order, found at the time of Swift's writing. For example, one goal of the Gulliver story was to protest the practice of selling (as opposed to voting) government positions. Therefore, it might be to the advantage of any viewer, or parent, to become familiar with the social/political customs prevalent at the time. A suitable book (which actually covers France, not England), is The French Revolution and Human Rights by Lynn Hunt (1996). As with the Gulliver movie, this book explains the existance of formalized upper and lower classes, and the practice of selling government positions.

Before the action-oriented "buddy movie" formula settled into place in the 1980s and 1990s with the <I>Lethal Weapon</I> films, Walter Hill's <I>48 HRS.</I> presented a much more irreverent and politically incorrect version of the genre. Eddie Murphy made an auspicious film debut alongside veteran Nick Nolte's consummate performance as a worn cop. Murphy plays a convict on a two-day furlough from prison to help capture his former partner (James Remar). The intense animosity between his character and Nolte's impatient detective is rude and violent--albeit in a comic way--and the film's racist and sexist banter is so ubiquitous that some viewers might be turned off. (This early, raw Murphy is not the Murphy of <I>The Nutty Professor</I>.) Then again, sometimes deliberate overkill is funny in itself, which is certainly closer to Hill's intention. There are a couple of scenes for the ages in this film, especially Murphy's single-handed shutdown of the action in a redneck bar. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2007-02-18

Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy play off each other really well in this movie - Nolte with his loud, gritty voice and Murphy with his suave demeanor. This movie and Another 48 Hours are both worth watching more than once. I definitely recommend this movie as worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars Eddie Murphy's film debut.......2006-12-04

Eddie Murphy's popularity on NBC's Saturday Night Live led to a film career. The same applied to his predecessors such as Dan Aykroyd, the late John Belushi, the late Gilda Radner,Chevy Chase and Bill Murray. Here is Murphy's starring film debut overall, opposite Nick Nolte about a cop and his apprentice about to apprehend wanted criminals. Plain clothes cop Jack Cates(Nolte) and his apprentice Reggie Hammond(Murphy) are just the right pair for the job. There was a catch:they had only 48 HRS. to do the job. Also Jack has been having disputes with his girlfriend Patti(Annette O'Toole). However, the police job landed Reggie in jail since he was a criminal himself and an escaped convict. Great support from the late Brion James who was Jack's co-worker Sgt. Ben Kehoe. This popular film inspired the 1990 sequel ANOTHER 48 HRS. In between the two films,Murphy starred in other popular favorites such as TRADING PLACES with Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis,BEST DEFENSE with the late Dudley Moore,BEVERLY HILLS COP,THE GOLDEN CHILD,BEVERLY HILLS COP 2,COMING TO AMERICA and HARLEM NIGHTS with the late Richard Pryor. Also in between,Murphy became a recording artist and released an album in 1985 spawning the Top 20 hit PARTY ALL THE TIME. This film and the sequel were directed by Walter Hill and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

5 out of 5 stars An Expensive Suit + A Porsche Does Not =Class!.......2006-10-27

This is a very tedious and tiresome "buddy movie" which were in fashion in the early 1980's. There is a stupid plot about money hidden away and Nick Nolte makes the very astute observation that Eddie's Murphy's character is still a "lowlife" no matter how he dresses or what car he drives. This movie was also made at the time when men stopped shaking hands and started hugging each other. Perhaps Hollywood was trying to send a "Subliminal Message" ?I give this movie 5 stars because Eddie is on the hunt for "trim" ( as he so delicately suggests to a woman)which is what any normal released con would do and that is about the only believable thing in this trash.

Slumming among the locals of a small New York town, Kelley Morse (Chris Klein), graduating senior at a posh prep school and all-around insufferable rich kid, engages the testosterone of one of the hicks (Josh Hartnett) when he flirts with the guy's girlfriend, Samantha (LeeLee Sobieski). A car chase ensues, resulting in Samantha's family's diner getting blown up, which in turn lands the boys in hot water with the law. The upshot is the snotty rich kid is sentenced to help the locals rebuild the diner. A romance develops between Kelley and Samantha, apparently because they like a particular Robert Frost poem. So now they're deep, see. But then their love is tested when Samantha contracts Ali MacGraw disease. You know, that's the sudden disease Ali McGraw gets in <I>Love Story</I>--really an excuse to emphasize the strength of the characters' love. You don't know what you got till it's gone, right? This film would be pretty bad if the performances weren't so engaging, especially LeeLee Sobieski's, who seems to be channeling Helen Hunt in this movie. Though Chris Klein never makes us believe for an instant that his arrogant character could make the changes he does, or that his and Sobieski's characters could ever really get together. The script is too thin to support any motivations, and the film falls into formula weepy territory to appeal to teen tear ducts. Lovers of weepies might overlook the film's plot weaknesses in favor of the strong performances and the prospect of a good cry. <I>--Jim Gay</I>

4 out of 5 stars Cute Movie.......2006-06-26

I just saw this movie last night. It is a really cute movie. This movie stars Leelee Sobeski, Josh Hartnett and Chris Klein. This is a very cute romantic movie about falling in love. Ignore the negative reviews and watch this movie. First of all this movie is about a rich guy (Kelley) who falls in love with a girl(Sam) from "the other side of the tracks".This movie starts off when Kelley comes to town. Sam's boyfriend gets mad at Kelley and they both get into a car race and end up burning down Sam's family restaurant. As a punishment they are both forced to help rebuild the restaurant. Sam eventually falls in love with Kelley. Sam's boyfriend then finds out about their romance. What will happen next? You'll have to watch to find out. I highly recommend this movie and I am sure that teenagers and pre-teens will enjoy it.

<b>Another 48 HRS.</b>
The boys are back in town, but they're wearing their carbon-paper suits in this frantic but not nearly as funny sequel to the action-comedy hit. The first time around, the combination of Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte had the element of surprise going for it: Who expected these two to have chemistry? This time, chemistry is virtually all they have in a veritable rehash of the first film. What plot there is has to do with Nolte's needing Murphy (who is just out of jail) to help him clear his own name and save his job on the police force. Director Walter Hill is back in place, but this time the script is the work of action hack Jeb Stuart and the movie barely gives Murphy room to unleash his comic riffs; when he does, we're expecting them (though he's still entertaining). --Marshall Fine

this double feature DVD improves on the original DVD letterboxed video with anamorphic widescreen. video is a little soft but I remember the theatrical picture was a little soft so this is acceptable. these are good action movies but why the disrespect in not releasing these movies with remastered video/audio, features and commentary? these movies were at least as important as Beverly Hills Cops and Trading Places to a young Eddie Murphy's career and Beverly Hills Cop got the box set treatment.

2 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2007-05-11

I wish there would have been other poor reviews of this movie prior to my purchasing it. It is my opinion the positive reviewers must have been reviewing the recent theatre version of "Bridge to Teribithia." The storyline in this PBS version was very lack-luster and slow-moving. It falls way short of the promises on the back of the cover. The imaginary world of Terabithia is never seen as more than a nice little wooded area where the main characters go to play. There is very little reference to what they imagine while there. Character and plot development are sadly missing from this big disappointment.

1 out of 5 stars Immensely Disappointed .......2007-05-11

I purchased this to conclude my novel study; I was extremely dissatisfied. If we had not read the novel first, it probably would have been acceptable. Having read the novel, it was a grave disappointment because there were far too many disparities: The initial meeting of Jess and Leslie was completely rewritten. Ellie was absent from the story, May Belle looked like a "healthy" third-grader (rather than a "skinny" first-grader), Joyce Ann was an "actual" baby (a diaper-wearing, able-to-fit-on-Momma's-hip size baby), and Miss Edmunds and Mrs. Meyers were morphed into one teacher (Annette O'Toole's character). This movie varied so distantly from the novel that, had I not preview it first (which I always do), I would have been thoroughly embarrassed showing it to my students. We did a comparison/contrast, and found pitifully few similarities beyond the names of the major players.

My positive: It was short enough to view in one class period. I used it to prove to my students that "watching a movie" does not equal "reading a book." They (four classes of 10-12 year olds) received that message loud and clear, by their own admission.

5 out of 5 stars This is a Movie, NOT a movie of a book........2007-03-19

I experienced (not "saw") this movie today with my adult daughter, on a dinner and movie
afternoon to "catch up" on things; we both share a delight in fantasy that is
is interpretive and reflective. Unlike virtually all of the reviewers I've read here,
I had no knowledge that a book even existed, let alone was a beloved classic. I saw
the movie based on a few intriguing trailers, and never read a review of the movie.
We both came to the theatre without expectations based on reviews or the preconception
that this was a canon to some, not to be trifled with. It is clear from the reviews here
that many viewers were clearly hoping to share something with their children that they
had experienced as a child reading the book. Clearly, most of these reviews of the movie
judge this movie on it's fidelity in mood, plot, and character to what they individually
brought with them from the book they read as a child....and that's OK (for them).
I will not discuss the plot, but I cannot understand how someone who read
and loved the book would not be aware of the plot and it's central turning
point and judge their children's reactions accordingly. I saw no sobbing
children...perhaps they were more thoughtful than if it had been "Shrek",
but as a parent, I would have felt that this film spoke honestly to children about how
difficult it is for them to understand their children's world, and how
equally tough it is for children to understand the grown up world. I would
have expected questions and been prepared with some answers.
"The Bridge to Terabithia" resonated with me as a much kinder, gentler,
and above all honest treatment of the bridge we cross when we move from
childhood to adolescence, with it's loss of innocence and come face to
face with the world in which we must live. Setting aside THE BOOK,
I found the MOVIE to be one of the best I've seen this year in it's
ability to tap into my feelings about my early years, both as a child
and a parent, and I was absorbed from beginning to end by the wonderful,
fanciful, magical special effects, as well as the development of the
parents from being seen from the children's point of view to a sense
of them and their difficulties I understand as an adult. OK, I loved
this movie, and I will return with my wife to experience the joy and
sadness and wonder of this enchanting film. I loved these characters
and I loved the film, and I see many, many films. The innocence and
lack of cynicism reminded me of a collaboration of Norman Rockwell and
Steven Spielberg. If you have no young children, see this movie anyway.
You will walk out feeling good and ready for coffee and conversation.

4 out of 5 stars 1985 version NOT 2007 .......2007-03-14

My co-teacher and I used this book as a tool for compare and contrast. FIRST we read the book and took notes on each chapter. We purchased the 1985 version to use as our 1st compare/contrast model, we have also pre-ordered the 2007 version and will be using it when it arrives to make a book/movie-movie/movie diagram. Our students enjoyed the 1985 version. It stayed true to the book and was originally released by PBS so it IS very appropriate for young audiences. I also agree that research was a key factor in choosing this story. The 1985 version is NOT rated.

5 out of 5 stars The Movie is rated PG.......2007-03-06

PG stands for PARENTAL GUIDANCE. Please act like a parent and do some research (ie. read the book!) before bad mouthing the "experience" you had.
