Seven years after he earned his first screen credit as the writer of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, former Rolling Stone writer Cameron Crowe made his directorial debut with this acclaimed romantic comedy starring John Cusack and Ione Skye as unlikely lovers on the cusp of adulthood. The casting is perfect, and Crowe's rookie direction is appropriately unobtrusive, no doubt influenced by his actor-loving, Oscar®-winning mentor, James L. Brooks. But the real strength of Crowe's work is his exceptional writing, his timely grasp of contemporary rhythms and language (he's frequently called "the voice of a generation"), and the rich humor and depth of his fully developed characters. In Say Anything... Cusack and Skye play recent high school graduates enjoying one final summer before leaping into a lifetime of adult responsibilities. Lloyd (Cusack) is an aspiring kickboxer with no definite plans; Diane (Skye) is a valedictorian with intentions to further her education in Europe. Together they find unlikely bliss, but there's also turbulence when Diane's father (John Mahoney)--who only wants what's best for his daughter--is charged with fraud and tax evasion. Favoring strong performances over obtrusive visual style, Crowe focuses on his unique characters and the ambitions and fears that define them; the movie's a treasure trove of quiet, often humorous revelations of personality. Lili Taylor and Eric Stoltz score high marks for memorable supporting roles, and Cusack's own sister Joan is perfect in scenes with her onscreen and offscreen brother. A rare romantic comedy that's as funny as it is dramatically honest, Say Anything... marked the arrival of a gifted writer-director who followed up with the underrated Singles before scoring his first box-office smash with Jerry Maguire. --Jeff Shannon

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT.......2007-06-08

John Cusack gives an amazing performance. You can't help but fall in love with Lloyd Dobler. The movie is funny, engaging and completely romantic. The ending is perfect and if you are a hopeless romantic, you MUST see this movie.

4 out of 5 stars "I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen".......2007-05-14

Every time I watch Say Anything I love it a little bit more. I don't know what it is. The loner guy who aims a bit too high in hoping that the class valedictorian will be the one for him. The perfect girl who can only reveal her insecurities around the guy who no one can imagine her with. The daddy's girl who learns her father isn't as perfect as she always believed. All of which are elements of teen film that have been done to death, but there's something about Say Anything, maybe that it came before all those other played-out teen films that tried so hard to be like it. Maybe John Cusack and Ione Skye's innocent portrayals of young love. Whatever it is, this is a movie that only gets better with time. Even if you've already seen this movie, I'd highly suggest watching it again. Like a fine wine, this film only gets better with age.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic love story.......2007-02-07

Okay, kids. First, PLEASE stop calling this an '80s movie. It's not - it may have been released in 1989, but it's a prototypical '90s movie. In fact, it may arguably be the first of the pack of young-disenfranchised-Gen X-teens-looking-for-love movies that typified the early '90s (see also: "Singles," "Reality Bites," etc. ).

For those of you who are too young to have seen this movie when it first came out, you can't begin to understand the effect it had on its target audience. It's about as seminal as the John Hughes/Molly Ringwald movies were to the '80s (THOSE are typical '80s movies). It's a brilliant treatise on teen angst in the early '90s, when people spent a lot of time weighing socially-conscious, indie "slackerdom" against more conventional (and lucrative) "sell-out" paths.

This is also the first teen movie I can remember seeing where the leads behaved like actual people - nothing contrived or jokey. The romance seemed normal (or, okay, maybe a little bit better than normal - that scene where Lloyd holds up a boombox outside Diane's window is iconic for a reason) and believable.

I guess some aspects of this movie probably seem a little dated or difficult to understand for people who didn't grow up then. However, for my money, this is one of the most honest, thoughtful, and enjoyable contemplations of love and angst in the Grunge Era.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite teen movie!!.......2006-11-09

I rented Say Anything from the library because I heard what good ratings it was getting from both people and critics. I could see why they thought the way they did about this film, it truly is sweet to watch. John Cusack does well playing the cool Lloyd Dobler as well the beautiful Ione Skye as valedictorian Diane Court. It is a very good movie about true love between two different high school graduates, one who is valedictorian of the class and the other a famous kickboxer. Say Anything is probably Cameron Crowe's best film with Jerry Maguire coming in dead second, thats how good it is. Its a teen comedy film with substance, intelligence and feeling that I just had to go out and buy the DVD. Forget all the brat pack films, Say Anything is the best you'll ever find.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, Touching, and Truly a Great Film.......2006-11-02

Cameron Crowe's classic "Say Anything" is a terrific movie. Moving, hilarious, and it features one of the most famous scenes in movie history. Many people who have never seen the movie can identify the image of John Cusack holding that radio. I'm paraphrasing, but Crowe once said that he could never have made this movie without Cusack. I've never been a HUGE fan of John Cusack, but I can see what he meant. Cusack hits all the right notes for his character. Cusack plays Lloyd Dobler, a recent high school graduate who's in love with Diane Court (Ione Skye, 'Rivers Edge') a girl that's a little out of his league. She's a brainiac and beautiful and Lloyd's obsessed. After calling her and impressing her dad James (John Mahoney) he manages to get a date with her. Lloyd is a little nervous, talks really fast, and seems like an idiot at first glance; But there's something about him that attracts Diane. The two begin dating, as James gets investigated by the IRS
Problem is (and this sounds cliche, but it works in the film) Diane is going to Europe in a few weeks, so it becomes Lloyd's goal to spend as much time with her as possible. Although, his plan doesn't go exactly the way he expects. Lili Taylor co-stars as Lloyd's friend Corey, who's recently experienced a breakup and has written 63 (or 65) songs about her ex-boyfriend. She adds a couple funny moments. John's sister Joan Cusack also co-stars as his, well, sister. As I said, the movie is really funny. It might not appeal to everyone, a lot of the material was funny to me because I could relate to it so well. Crowe has always had a knack for dialogue. Not big theatrical dialogue, but that realistic dialogue. This a witty, incredibly entertaining movie (featured in Roger Ebert's "The Great Movies II") and it's not a film that should be missed.

Kate Hudson twinkles as the heroine of <I>How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days</I>, a magazine writer assigned to date a guy, make all the mistakes girls make that drive guys away (being clingy, talking in baby-talk, etc.), and record the process like a sociological experiment. However, the guy she picks--rangy Matthew McConaughey--is an advertising executive who's just bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in ten days; if he succeeds, he'll win a huge account that will make his career. The set-up is completely absurd, but the collision of their efforts to woo and repel creates some pretty funny scenes. McConaughey's easy charm and Hudson's lightweight impishness play well together and the plot, though strictly Hollywood formula, chugs along efficiently. At moments Hudson seems to channel her mother, Goldie Hawn, to slightly unnerving effect. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Really didn't LOVE this movie until I was able to watch it several times. Now, I am so happy that it is part of my collection. Kate and Matthew have a chemistry that makes for great viewing. The things that Kate does to drive Matt crazy are hilarious and, unfortunately, all to true of us at times. Worth the cost to be able to enjoy it over and over again.

    4 out of 5 stars A sweet valentine's Day treat.......2007-02-11

Both Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are in top form in the movie. They began in false pretences and on a bet. Yet their relationship flourished in their contrasting approaches - she wanted to lose him while he wanted to keep her within 10 days. What make this movie a pleasant surprise are the sunny side of both characters and their calculating yet interesting diaglogue. Kate Hudson is wonderful in lending depth and warmth to her role with her cute smile and personable character. The script is not at all shallow and formulaic. A good treat indeed.

The definition of comfort television is this: You want to go where you know everybody's name. And you're always glad you came. Long one of DVD's most wanted, <I>Cheers</I> is at last open for business in this four-disc set that contains all 22 episodes of the first, and best, season of one of the defining series of the 1980s. <I>Cheers</I> inherited the mantle from <I>Taxi</I> as television's best ensemble-driven workplace comedy. It can be instructive to return to a long-running series' more humble beginnings. While <I>Cheers</I> got drunk on farce in its later seasons, it began life as a much more grounded human comedy. In these inaugural episodes, the action does not stray from the Boston bar owned by Sam Malone, a washed-up baseball player three years sober. The straws that stir the drink are the lineup of MVPs: Nick Colasanto as addled Coach; Rhea Perlman, the Thelma Ritter of her generation, as surly and fertile waitress Carla; George Wendt as quintessential barfly Norm; and John Ratzenberger as Cliff, the bar know-it-all ready with "little-known facts" (and blessedly far from the pathetic blowhard his character would evolve into).

Spiking this concoction is the palpable chemistry between Ted Danson's Sam and Shelley Long's Diane Chambers, fledgling waitress and self-described "student of life." The battle lines are drawn in the episode "Sam's Women": He's the "dim ex-baseball player" and she, "the post graduate." But, as Carla so indelicately puts it, they can't "put their glands on hold." In the first blush of lust, they were primetime's most potent mismatched couple until <I>Moonlighting</I>'s David and Maddie bantered entendres. Here are little remembered facts: Sam was initially "an astute judge of human character." Guest stars Fred Dryer ("Sam at Eleven") and Julia Duffy ("Any Friend of Diane's") were among those considered for the roles of Sam and Diane. A pre-"Night Court" Harry Anderson stole his scenes in his recurring role as flim-flam man Harry ("Pick a Con...Any Con"). The lack of a commentary track is a disappointment, as are the extras that wouldn't fill a shot glass. Still, <I>Cheers</I> patrons can expect plenty of happy hours with this set. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

    Description

CHEERS takes viewers back to the Boston bar where everybody knows your name. As former baseball star Sam Malone (Danson) and his colleague Diane Chambers (Long) fight their mutual attractions, they cater to their regulars including Norm Petersen (Wendt) and Cliff Claven (Ratzenberger). Talking about their problems, laughing at each other's flaws and trying to be there when someone needs them, the gang are joined by naïve farm boy Woody (Harrelson, The Thin Red Line), bitter waitress Carla (Perlman), troubled psychiatrist Frasier (Grammer) and his wife.

Cheers is my husbands all time favorite sitcom. We have 2 small girls and they both love watching the show as well. Yelling "Norm" is their favorite part. The season has many shows that we couldn't believe were in the first season of Cheers. Anyone that likes the show will love Season 1.

this is a classic i had to buy stleast the first season so if it ever went off the air id have a copy..great comedy

    5 out of 5 stars IT'S A LITTLE KNOWN FACT .............2006-09-19

The series pilot is a dead giveaway that the creators knew they had a hit on their hands - a lot of times you'll see a small difference in quality between a pilot episode and the rest of the series, but in this case the first episode is, quality wise, at the same level as the other 21 episodes.

You can tell how long a show was on the air by the fuss they make when it eventually ends. And when Cheers ended, after 11 years, the fuss was huge.

The premise was fairly simple and pretty novel - take one bar in Boston, now, add some regulars, including Sam (lady's man and owner of the bar), Coach (the dim, but lovable barkeep), Carla (the one barmaid, who is equal parts feisty and fertile), Norm (Norm!) and Cliff (Mr. Zip's answer man). Gently add one dumped and down-on-her-luck brainiac (Diane) and stir. The result is a sitcom where the next story is whomever walks through the bar doors next. Brilliant!

While I love the humor and have come to appreciate the continuing saga of the bar regulars I like the style of Cheers the most. The majority of sitcoms involve some variation on the two-story, one family, suburban home, but Cheers took place in a bar. And that's it. Designed like a large stage play, the action never leaves the bar - people come and go, homes are mentioned, but RARILY does the camera leave the bar.

    The four disc set comes with a nice helping of extras, but not a lot. The best is probably "Setting the Bay: A Conversation with Ted Danson", a four minute short wherein Ted Danson briefly goes over his role on Cheers and his thoughts about its charms, but honestly it was pretty short (8 minutes, most of which is clips from the show). In addition there are the following four clip collections;

"Love at First Sight: Opposites Distract"
"Coach Ernie Pantusso's Rules of the Game"
"I'll Drink to That: Stormin' Normisms"
    "It's A Little Known Fact..."

Each features the best of the bits for each of the main characters, with the exception of Carla. The best would have to be the collection of Normisms - Norm's various responses to various greetings is a show standard and always good for a laugh, so compiling them all in one place is good for a hoot.

And finally, a Cheers trivia game, which tests to see if you've been paying close attention !

Now, if only I can get that theme out of my head...

With the help of his lawyer, Georges (Gérard Depardieu), a composer and one-time petty thief who grew up in poverty, attempts to escape his life in Paris and begin anew in America by illegally marrying Bronte (Andie MacDowell), a prim and repressed young lady from a privileged life in Connecticut. Bronte, who has agreed to the scheme for her own self-serving reasons, is exasperated when the Immigration & Naturalization Service investigates their case, and she and Georges, whom she detests, must spend time together studying each other's lives to avoid disaster. The fallout, and how it ends, is infinitely more delightful than your run-of-the-mill Hollywood romantic comedy, and the very ending itself stops deliciously short of where Hollywood would feel compelled to drag the story. Fine performances are given by MacDowell, Depardieu--who is fiercely charming pounding the keyboard of a Steinway at an upper class Manhattan dinner party--and Bebe Neuwirth, who is perfect as an upper-class child turned artist who revels in her irresponsibility. <I>--James McGrath</I>

She'll get to live in the apartment of her dreams, he'll get a "green card" to live in the U.S. But before they know it, the two opposites encounter far greater differences than most married couples could ever imagine! And worst yet, this mismatched twosome just might be falling love. Winner of two Golden Globe Awards (Best Picture and Best Actor), this delightful tale enjoyed cheers from critics and audiences alike. With its sunny mix of wit, spirit, and charm, GREEN CARD is an entertaining hit you'll never forget!

Excellent movie. Andie MacDowell and Gerard Depardieu at their finest. Supporting actors Bebe Neuwirth and Gregg Eldeman are wonderful too. Superb job of directing. You will want to re-watch it frequently.

4 out of 5 stars An unlikely tale of love..........2006-11-25

Green Card was a good movie. The main characters are well defined and relatable because they are not fake or scripted. The story makes you realize that what you think you want isnt always what you need. A perfect example of how love shows up when you least expect it and when you are not looking for it. Funny and heart warming!

3 out of 5 stars I watched it for him, and he is why I would watch it again........2006-10-02

Gerard Depardieu is amazing, its pretty hard to argue that point. So inspite of my usual tepid response to McDowell, I picked this up at the video store. The opening scene for me didn't really tie into the action of the film--a kid baning on a drum as if he is on his last breath (I suppose in a grander sense it does) But it left me with a very disjointed feeling from the begining, we start off with the marriage of the two main characters, knowing nothing about them, essentially. (This works for and against the movie).

They are each marrying because marriage will give them something they want, he a Green Card, she a Green House. (Why she needs a green house so desperately, or can't get one else where is sort of unexplained, how convenient--or why she didn't marry her safe boyfriend...)

A snag in the Green Card proceedings occur when he has difficulting showing one of the investigators where the restroom of her apartment is. So they spend the next several days getting to know each other. this works for the movie, because the audience is also getting to know them, so the information is not redundant. However, the audience has also spent the last 45 minutes without much of a connection to either character, because we knew so little about them until now. She explains her well to do upbringing in a loving family, whlie he reminices about his life on the wrong side of the street.

The ending was almost bittersweet in that it leaves the audience wanting the neat Hollywood ending (which is not given, cruel! Almost makes me want to watch it again to see all of that build up again)

Bronte is a sort of dumb character who has a very blinded view of the world and of the people in it. She has considerable growth in the movie, in regards to Georges at least. He seems a little more static, as he always treated her pretty well, its only his regard for her that changed.

Some of the supporting characters were pretty amusing, Ethan Phillips, Bebe Neuwerth was probably the gem of the lot. I wouldn't have minded seeing her in the title role.

Not a bad way to spend some time, but I'm not sure of the strengths out weight the weaknesses enough for me to repeatedly watch it--even with Depardieu's amazingness in it.

4 out of 5 stars With a Frenchman in New York.......2006-08-09

This movie never fails to humor me. I lost my original video so I finally decided to get this dvd.

These two strangers (Andie MacDowell and Gerard Depardieu) couldn't be more oppposites. I love the scenery of the park and the apartment with the lovely plants. It isn't until the end that they learn what the two could offer each other. It still frustrates me that they couldn't stay with each other in the end when they did realize that they loved each other.

After the success of <I>Jurassic Park</I> in 1993, the floodgates opened for digital special effects, and <I>Jumanji</I> is nothing if not a showcase for computer-generated creepiness guaranteed to give young children a nightmare or two. Whether that was the filmmakers' intention is up for debate, since this is a PG-rated adventure revolving around a mysterious board game that unleashes a terrifying jungle world upon its players, including gigantic spiders, huge mosquitoes, a stampede of rhinos, elephants, and every other jungle beast you can imagine. Robin Williams plays a man-child who's been trapped in the world of "Jumanji" for 26 years until he's freed by two kids who've discovered the game and released its parade of dangerous horrors. A chaotic and misguided attempt at family entertainment, the movie does offer a few good laughs, and the effects are frequently impressive, if not entirely convincing to the eye. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars In the jungle you must wait, untill the dice reads 5 or 8.......2007-04-22

I saw this movie for the first time when I was like 9 or 10. I was so into it. I went out and bought the game right after seeing it. It all starts out with a little boy "Alen" is having a tough time. He is poicked on at school, does not have any friends and his parents want him to go to a school in which he does not want to go. Then one day he goes to a place where there is a company doing construction. He hears drums playing. He finds a game called Jumanji. He runs home and hides it. Then his parents leave to do something and him and a girl start playing. Things start to happen as they do. Bugs start flying around and bats start flying. The game comes alive. Then the boy rools something and the game bord tells him "in the jungle you must wait until the dice reads 5 or 8. He is sucked into the game. The girl gets so affraid that she runs out of the house with bats chasing her. Like 20 years go by and a lady and her sisters 2 kids (I think it was her sister) move in. The kids find the game and start playing. One of them rolls a 5 or 8 and the man is set free. He has aged as the time has gone by. He ends up playing the game with them to finish it. But he needs to get the girl whom played with him all those years ago to play as well because it is her turn. She screams when he arrives to ask her and he tricks her into playing. They all play the game and alot of crazy exciting things happen. I can not tell you what happens because that would ruin it for you. Buy this movie. It is well written. Has good acting from people such as Robin Willams, Kirsten Dunst, and Bradley Pierce. It will make you laugh and suck you in just like the game did Alen.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this.......2007-03-10

I like pretty nearly anything Robin Williams is in, but this was great for the whole family - a perfect vehicle for Williams' brand of slapstick humor.

    4 out of 5 stars Unique ..........2007-01-29

... is, I think, the best word for this film. As stated in an earlier review, most films are take-offs on dog-earred, thumb-smudged plots and tend only to restate what has been done before. This is especially true of many of today's productions where the film is an out-and-out remake of the earlier film. Often the title is not even changed.

But this story is different. I can't remember any film which has the same idea -- of a boy finding a board game and playing it with his friend only to unleash dire results.

The tale has been recounted in other reviews, so no need for me to restate it. Let's just say that this is a refreshing breath of air in an industry which has become stale in it's repeatition. Visuals are nice, but one can tell they are computer generated.

Older kids and adults will enjoy the story, I think, though I would be cautious about very young children watching. The movie could easily inspire dark dreams for those under age 8 (or so).

The film flows and has a really nice, unexpected twist at the end. Well worth the build up. I think most who watch the movie will like it. And of course it features Robin Williams.

5 out of 5 stars Time to revisit this great classic........2006-08-14

Watching Jumanji with kids under the age of 10 will really put this movie into persective for you. I know its Robin Williams and I know its Jumanji, but its good family entertainment, and on that nobody disagrees.

Special effects are a little light by today's standards, but thats really limited to the scenes with the lion and the ubiquitous monkeys, everything else comes off in fairly realistic manner even on a large format digital display. This movie is just great fun, with a terrific twist at the end.

This edition of the DVD has been completely remastered over the original issue, and the quality is in the amazingly clear images and awesome 5.1 audio. A nice "making of" documentary to go along with an FX team commentary and storyboards if you're all that interested in this flick. All in all a high quality release. 5 Skeeters

It looks great: season two of the situation comedy many consider the best ever produced on American television has a superb presentation on this DVD collection. The colors are rich, the images sharp--a vast improvement over those murky reruns in perpetual TV syndication.

Then, of course, there are the consistently brilliant episodes from <I>Cheers</I>' sophomore year. Despite its low-rated debut in 1982, the ensemble farce set in a Boston bar confidently returned with several strong story arcs, including the turbulent, screwball romance between intellectual poseur Diane Chambers (Shelley Long) and affable primitive Sam Malone (Ted Danson), romantic conflicts for the sexually voracious and deeply cynical barmaid Carla (Rhea Perlman), and marital separation for beloved barfly Norm (George Wendt). With John Ratzenberger signing on as a full-time cast member (playing pompous jive-slinger and postman Cliff Claven), and those opaque one-liners by the clueless Coach (Nicholas Colasanto), <I>Cheers</I> was firing on all cylinders.

Episode highlights include "They Call Me Mayday," in which talk-show personality Dick Cavett, playing himself, convinces Sam the public would be interested in the former major league pitcher's autobiography--a notion that throws the unpublished, would-be novelist Diane into disbelief. Also wonderful is "Where There's a Will," guest-starring George Gaynes as a rich, dying man who leaves the gang $100,000 on a paper napkin will. "No Help Wanted" finds Sam's friendship with down-on-his-luck accountant Norm strained when the latter has a go at the bar's books, while the great "Coach Buries a Grudge" features the addled, elder statesman of <I>Cheers</I> delivering a memorable eulogy for a friend after discovering the dead man had an affair with his wife. Opinions vary about the worthiness of <I>Cheers</I>' latter years (the show ended in 1993), but no one disputes the merit of its groundbreaking start. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

    4 out of 5 stars A season worth owning.......2006-11-07

In season two the Cheers characters really gain traction as they continue to define and expand their individual characters. This season offers sharp writing and a very funny look at the doomed Sam/Diane mismatch romance. Coach (soon to be sorely missed following his death and replacement by Woody) is wonderfully confused in these episodes. Watching now, one realizes again what a quality cast was assembled for this show.

    5 out of 5 stars IT'S A LITTLE KNOWN FACT ..............2006-09-19

During an interview found in the extras section of the DVD set, George Wendt explains that Cheers owes its life to a network executive who decided that they would show quality TV until the audience found it. Which is a good policy, given that most shows don't find their footing until their second season. Not to mention that in today's market, the show's first season, which topped out at number 13, would have likely seen them canned before a second season could begin.

By season two, Cheers knows exactly what it is. The characters have had their final tweaks, the relationships all laid out, and while the focus is on the love-hate relationship between Sam and Diane, the entire cast gets to shine, repeatedly. Stand outs include Rhea Perlman playing Carla's sex-fiend sister and Cliff standing up to a bar bully by displaying kung-fu skills he doesn't actually have. Round it out with a freaky fortune telling carnival scale and the appearances of Christopher Lloyd as a super-pretentious artist and Dan Hedaya as Carl's super-sleaze of an ex-husband, and this is the season where Cheers really takes off.

If only you could own a copy of it for yourself. Oh wait, you can :)

    EXTRA FEATURES =

Strictly Top-Shelf: The Guys Behind the Bar (9:30 min.)
Largely culled from old Entertainment Tonight interview footage (from 1983!), the feature has Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Les Charles, Glen Charles, and James Burrow, talking specifically about the second season. To fill that out, contemporary footage with Ted Danson, George Wendt, and Rhea Perlman provides an interesting retrospective contrast. While mostly of interest to the big fans, the fact that Paramount went to the trouble to dig up twenty-year-old ET footage should be applauded.

That, and George Wendt explaining how several years of over-the-shoulder shots past him at Ted Danson has made it so that even today fans can recognize him from behind, is hilarious.

Cliff's Notes: The Wisdom of Cliff Clavin (4:00 min)
Similar to the compilation of Cliff-isms in the first season set, this one is peppered with some interview footage of George Wendt talking about working with John Ratzenberger. Not as much as one might like, but a nice garnish just the same.

Carla The Comeback Queen: Insults for Every Occasion (3:30)
Here it is a wacky compilation of Carla-isms. Which is good, as season two was a stellar season for Carla. Again, the recent interview footage found in the first featurette, in this case Ted Danson, is put in to add a little commentary to the collection of verbal hate!

Di Another Day: Diane Chambers from A-Z (3:35)
Ted Danson returns to kick off the last character scene compilation.

Gag Reel: Bloopers From Season 2 (4:24)
Oh, if only they'd done one for Season One. But I'm not picky. I'll take what I can get. In this case, you get almost five minutes of a fuzzy old video blooper collection. Every TV show has them, they just have to be found. Given that sometimes they are lost in a closet somewhere, it's always a treasure when a disc producer finds them and digs them out for the rest of us to see.

Of particular merit is getting to see Nicholas Colasanto (Coach) goofing around as himself, not as the character we most identify him

5 out of 5 stars Classic season of great sitcom.......2005-05-20

When I watch this DVD I think of how impressive Cheers was in that it had heart - genuine affection and incredible rapport between characters - but was also irreverent in its humor and unshy of the racy and the less than wholly tasteful. Danson and Long in particular deserve credit for their outstanding performances and at least partial credit for their great chemistry (as there's always a component of that kind of spark between actors that seems entirely left to hance, I think) but the writing team was also formiddable in that it consistently avoided veering into the saccharine excess that has marked so many romantic plotlines in the sit. comedy genre, particularly of Cheers' day. There are too many worthwile episodes to justify my listing them here, but this DVD constitutes what is undoutedly among my top 3 favorites of the show's 11 seasons.

Though it was remarkably consistent for laughs throughout its run, I personally prefer Cheers in the pre-Kirstie Alley days. It's not that seasons 6-11, or Alley even, were bad, per se. But it was a different show once Shelley Long left. She really deserves all the lauds she received for her portrayal of the neurotic but well-inteded elitist Diane Chambers. Along with the writers she created one of TV's truly memorable, suprisingly multi-dimensional characters in this season and the one preceding it.

The entire cast is stellar, their interaction so natural (also evident in the short but very amusing blooper reel) and the writing unusually (for its genre) and mercifully restrained in its laugh grabs. In the post-Seinfeld era, few sitcoms have seamlessly combined irreverence and warmth the way Cheers did. I miss(ed) it (until I got the DVDs, that is :-).

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest sitcoms in television history!.......2005-04-19

One of the greatest television comedies in history, Cheers is an absolute "must see" for anyone who's ever had a regular hangout "where everybody knows your name". The shows centers itself around the friendly neighborhood Boston bar named Cheers. The bar is owned by former Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Sam Malone (Ted Danson). Sam has three employees - bartender Ernie "Coach" Pantusso (Nicholas Colasanto) and waitresses Carla Tortelli (Rhea Pearlman) and Diane Chambers (Shelley Long). Regular barflies Norm Peterson (George Wendt) and Cliff Clavin (John Ratzenberger) round out a strong supporting cast.

The Cheers (Season 2) DVD offers a number of hilarious episodes and ignites Sam and Diane's long-lasting, on-again/off-again romance. This is also the first season in which Cliff Clavin is an "opening-credits" member of the cast (even though he appeared in most of season one's episodes). Guest appearances by Fred Dryer (of Hunter fame), Dick Cavett, Harry Anderson (of Night Court fame), and Christopher Lloyd (of Taxi and Back To The Future fame) make for some memorable comic sequences. The season ends with Sam and Diane's romance on shaky ground...

Below is a list of episodes included on the Cheers (Season 2) DVD:

    Episode 23 (Power Play)
Episode 24 (Little Sister Don't Cha)
    Episode 25 (Personal Business)

    The DVD Report

1 out of 5 stars No sound here either.......2005-02-17

As one other reviewer mentioned, there must be a defective batch of these Cheers season 2 DVDs. The copy I got also had no sound. I've trying playing them on three different DVD players, and the result was the same on all of them - perfect picture, but no sound.

It got even odder when I tried to play them on computer DVD drives - my home computer wouldn't play the DVDs at all, while my computer at work played them fine with both picture and sound.

Please note that my 1 star rating is not a comment on the quality of the show - Cheers is one of my all-time favorite TV shows and I'm really looking forward to watching season two. But the frustration of dealing with this sound issue is what prompted the one star review.

Update: After returning the set TWICE, I finally got a copy that would play on my Go Video DVD player with sound (plus it also worked in my XBox). But when I tried to play it on the Samsung player (my main player, since it's hooked up to my home theater system), there was still no sound.

As a last ditch thing to try, I got Paramount's snail mail address from their web site and wrote them a (polite) letter about how frustrated I was with the whole situation. To my amazement, a little over a week later a package arrived in the mail from Paramount. No letter, no explanation, just another copy of the Cheers Season 2 set. But this one plays absolutely fine (both audio and video) on every DVD player that I've tried. And they didn't even ask me to send the defective copy back.

So if you're having the no-audio problem, try writing to Paramount.

    5 out of 5 stars Splendid Fun.......2007-05-20

Really didn't LOVE this movie until I was able to watch it several times. Now, I am so happy that it is part of my collection. Kate and Matthew have a chemistry that makes for great viewing. The things that Kate does to drive Matt crazy are hilarious and, unfortunately, all to true of us at times. Worth the cost to be able to enjoy it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites..........2007-04-10

My husband and I laugh over and over again every time we watch this movie. It is sooo funny. Love wins over in the end and that is what I like to see!

Okay, you knew everyone in high school was just a little different: everyone looked at you strangely, the teachers were freaky, and you never could find the right groove to fit into. What if it turned out that it was all because your school was inhabited by creepy aliens from outer space? That's the enjoyably cheesy B-premise for this fun and scary flick from the pen of <I>Scream</I>'s Kevin Williamson, the master of the post-modern teen horror film. Directed by Robert Rodriguez (<I>El Mariachi</I>), it's <I>The Breakfast Club</I> meets <I>Invasion of the Body Snatchers</I>, as six disparate students from Herrington High School band together when they discover that an alien life form is invading both the student and faculty bodies, with plans to take over the world.

Each of the heroes represents a different high school type: popular babe (Jordana Brewster), picked-on geek (Elijah Wood), goth girl (Clea DuVall), sensitive jock (Shawn Hatosy), new kid in town (Laura Harris), and bad-boy rebel (Josh Hartnett). The plot isn't much--a basic kill-or-be-killed premise spiked with a healthy shot of paranoia--but Willliamson and Rodriguez do a great job of building the tension slowly but surely. The suspense set pieces are genuinely frightening, and the film pokes fun at itself without deflating its scares; Williamson is a master at shifting gears from comedy to horror quickly and adroitly. The young cast doesn't have a weak link among them (with special kudos to Wood, DuVall and heartthrob-in-the-making Hartnett), and Rodriguez gets maximum mileage from the titular faculty, which includes Jon Stewart, Piper Laurie, Salma Hayek, Bebe Neuwirth, and Robert Patrick of <I>Terminator 2</I>. Go to the head of the class, Mr. Williamson. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

    Description

This hip and edgy thriller from the director of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN and the writer of SCREAM and SCREAM 2 sizzles with a hot young cast including Elijah Wood (THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy), Josh Hartnett (PEARL HARBOR), and R&B superstar Usher Raymond! When some very creepy things start happening around school, the kids at Herrington High make a chilling discovery that confirms their worst suspicions: their teachers really are from another planet! As mind-controlling parasites rapidly begin spreading from the faculty to the students' bodies, it's ultimately up to the few who are left -- an unlikely collection of loners, leaders, nerds, and jocks -- to save the world from alien domination! Also starring Robert Patrick (TERMINATOR 2), Famke Janssen (X-MEN), and Jon Stewart (TV's THE DAILY SHOW) in a great cast -- don't miss the unstoppable excitement of this unpredictably smart and scary hit!

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars "I'm allergic!"; "Yeah, and I'm Portuguese.".......2007-05-30

If you're looking for a good thriller/whodoneit type movie, this is it.

What's this movie about? Basically, a group of kids are trapped when their entire school has been overcome by "aliens". These kids are different in many ways (you have the jock, the preppy girl, the geek, the goth, the stoner, the new girl) yet, as in so many "scary" movies, they must put their differences aside and attempt to fight off these aliens, starting with the faculty.

First, let me say that this movie isn't a sci-fi type movie. It's more of a "let's guess who did it" movie (or, in this case, "let's figure out who has been overtaken by the aliens and who is the queen alien"). Why am I rating this a 4 out of 5? Because if you've seen any scary movie, this movie is nothing new. However, it stands on its own and if you like typical scary movies, I'd give this one a chance.

3 out of 5 stars got my attention.......2007-03-11

This movie got my attention and I watched it on teevee, it had good elements of Body Snatchers, The Thing, and a little Alien and a little Terminator. The acting was very good, action was very good, I enjoyed it overall. But the happy ending of everybody coming back alive and the world being good again betrayed the viscerable horror concepts that gave birth to this movie. This was fun to watch, but the axed Pollyanna ending was very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Cut From A Familiar Mold, But Better Than Most........2007-01-11

When "The Faculty" arrived at theaters in late 1998, the world had already seen it's share of over-hyped, over-dramatic and sarcastic teen horror from the mind of Kevin Williamson. Not only did we already have a "Scream," but there was a "Scream 2," as well as a corny "I Know What You Did Last Summer," followed by a corny sequel with an even cornier title. To add insult to injury, he tainted what could have been an amazing comeback movie, "Halloween H20" with his own embarassing self-referential "touch-ups" on the script. Most horror fans, including me, placed blame on Williamson for watering down the horror genre, and forcing us to suffer through a five year period of bland horror that was finally put to rest with the flop, "Valentine." However, working in Williamson's favor are two things. First, you can't blame him for "Disturbing Behavior" or "Urban Legend," as he had nothing to do with them, and second, he did deliver this little underrated gem. Together with director Robert Rodriguez, "The Faculty" was brought to the screen in a style that set it aside from it's peers and with a story that, despite lacking in the originality department, didn't feel quite as stale.

Six teenage stereotypes -- a jock, a brain, a pretty girl, a frumpy girl, a burnout, and a naive new kid -- band together when they discover that their school, and eventually their town, are being infested with an alien life-form. The teachers are more cruel and strict than before, and their parents and the police force aren't of much help either. Taking a cue from "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers," the parasites in this movie use their human counterparts as a host, taking away what made them human and using their bodies to feed their needs. It's not too long into the film that the kids wise up to this fact. When Josh Hartnett, laying it on a little to thick as the burnout character, stabs his science teacher (played by John Stewart) in the eyeball with a homemade cocaine inside a pen, a plan to hunt down the Queen, which will theoretically save everyone (aside from the few they already wasted) is devised. The movie turns into a whodunnit of sorts, but without resorting to "Scream"-esque cliches. Rest assured, there are no long-winded explanations as to what their motivations are and how they pulled it off.

One of the biggest flaws in this film would be the last fifteen or so minutes, which really degrades itself to some sort of b-movie monster flick. Needless to say, when the Queen reveals herself, it's a bit embarassing to watch. However, the movie on the whole is thoroughly entertaining. Even when it reaches into moments of cheese, it is still fun, thanks mostly to Rodriguez's expertise. One has to wonder how this guy got stuck directing a teen-horror flick in the first place. A fresh faced Elijah Wood, Jordana Brewster and Clea DuVall are fun to watch in the film, but it is really the Faculty themselves who take center stage. Rodriguez alumni Robert Patrick and Selma Hayek, along with Jon Stewart and Famke Janssen, threaten to steal the show. Their portrayals of overworked, underpaid and underappreciated teachers are spot-on and couldn't be closer to reality. I swear, I've had these people as teachers growing up.

Overall, "The Faculty" is an entertaining little sci-fi/horror that you'll probably want to watch more than once. Sure, it's become a bit dated eight years later, but of all the movies of it's kind popping up at the time, I'd have to say this is the best. The DVD is horribly disappointing, however, with no special features really to speak of. Hopefully one day they'll put out a special edition, with some commentary and some insight into the making of the film.

4 out of 5 stars Puts The "Cult" Back Into "Faculty" And The "Ache" Back Into "Teacher"!.......2006-12-31

Scream-play scribe Kevin Williamson's formulaic yet satisfying suspense thriller, "The Faculty" borrows from a buffet of tried and true storylines: Williamson fills his plate with plots from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," tasty twists from his own "Scream" series, and still leaves room for heaping helpings of "The Breakfast Club," to boot.

Indeed, Williamson was no doubt the John Hughes of the 90's, his finger firmly on the (sometimes slashed) pulse of teenaged America. Recognizing a can't miss recipe when he sees one - in this case the old "take a teen from each disillusioned demographic then unite them in a common cause" trick - and adding a sci-fi spin to his already patented brand of knowingly ironic self-reference, Williamson cooks up a stylistic stew with something for everyone, even though some flavors could have used a bit more seasoning.

Elijah Wood leads the aforementioned ragtag bunch of scholastic standbys (you know 'em, you love 'em: the jock, the cheerleader, the geek, the Ally Sheedy outsider, the genius underachiever, the new girl, etc.) in a somewhat queasy quest to save their Ohio high school from an alien takeover.

Williamson's wink wink self-aware gimmicks work well in this setting, for he can once again mask his thematic thievery by having his own characters discuss his crimes: "Well how bad can stealing be if I'm admitting it?" asks the new Zeitgeist of Teen Angst. And so the somewhat-Sheedy outsider is a huge science fiction fan, thus she speaks eloquently of Heinlein's "The Puppet Masters" and the original "Body Snatchers" stories, saving us the trouble of calling Kevin on his references. Neat!

And cliched lines can't be spoken without acknowledging their triteness first. But today's trick question is - if every new sardonic screenplay calls itself out on every cliche, then doesn't that just replace the old cliches with new ones? Of course, some lines work on and of their own merits - as when one of the teens accuses Wood of impersonating the hero(ine) from another popular series of alien films.

But I digress. The real reason that all of this works so well is the person who's stirring the stolen stew - in this case erstwhile indie maestro Robert Rodriguez, of "El Mariachi" and "From Dusk Till Dawn" fame - adds enough spice with his deft direction as to make this picture quite palatable indeed. It's the little moments that most directors ignore or treat as filler that Rodriguez has fun with - especially in his slo-mo depictions of disjointedness. Watch as the librarian spookily brandishes a "QUIET PLEASE" sign as two of the teen rebellion talk strategy; laugh as you catch a glimpse of eager-beaver students in a classroom with hands raised, signalling certain disturbances in the force.

The gore is fun and "Blade"-like, with foamy death sequences that leaves seemingly carbonated corpses - another cola tie in, perhaps? - and fairly decent computerized and animatronic effects of dismembered body parts seeking to reconnect. And, as in the original body snatcher movies, Rodriguez does a great job conveying the palpable paranoia of not knowing whether your best friends and confidantes are still on your side.

Of course, that's where this entire movie works best, on the level of saccharine allegory - because, not only as teenagers but in at later stages of life, haven't we all worried about and experienced the hurt of allies switching sides and friends defecting to join our detractors? Well, this movie treats those back-stabbers with a healthy dose of eye-gouging in return, which can be quite therapeutic. What teen won't thrill at the sight of student stabbing teacher at face value? And, in the end, haven't we ever stopped to consider that the word "alien" can also mean "outsider"? So, in a way, aren't we all just aliens trying to get by? Awwww - time for a group hug!

    4 out of 5 stars A Fun And Exciting Sci-Fi Horror Film!.......2006-10-12

When I first viewed this film I was not expecting a really good film. Just another teenagers from high school defeat the aliens from another world, type of film. They do, but it is different than just that. With a strong supporting cast and exciting thrills, this film makes for one entertaining film. Not only that, but the comedic elements thrown into the film were great. From (Jon Stewart) as the science teacher conducting experiments in his lab, to (Famke Janssen) as the introverted school teacher, and the hilariously funny (Robert Patrick) as the jerk coach of the football team; this film sets the tone for a fun and enjoyable watch. I especially liked how Robert Patrick was actually pretty funny in his role. He plays the football coach to the hilt.

I was completely surprised at how good this film was. The young actors in the film, Elijah Wood; Jordana Brewster; Clea Duvall and Josh Hartnet all give outstanding performances in the film. Especially Josh Hartnett. The special effects were also great. When an alien parasite [yes another one] lands on Earth it finds it has found a terrific home on one of Earth's high schools. Immediately it begins to infect people. Namely the faculty of the school: Hence the title of the film "The Faculty." The film starts off quick with everyone [almost] being infected by this alien parasite. The few student's who are not infected are now in a race to try and save their school, and more importantly themselves from this menace. This is a highly entertaining film. It is highly recommended. Not your typical teen fare. It really is good! Recommended!

In its sixth season, <I>Cheers</I> introduced its second major--and most significant--cast change. Following the events of season 5, Sam (Ted Danson) returns from his aborted around-the-world boat trip to find the old gang gone, Carla (Rhea Perlman) and Woody (Woody Harrelson) wearing uniforms more fit for a barbershop quartet, and a tough new boss who reportedly "eats live sharks for breakfast." The new boss, Rebecca (Kirstie Alley, probably best known at the time for her appearance in <I>Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan</I> and later to anchor such series as <I>Veronica's Closet</I> and <I>Fat Actress</I>), grudgingly hires back Sam, but has him positively befuddled with her resistance to his masculine wiles. She's not as tough as she seems, however, getting weak in the knees at the thought or sight of her corporate boss, Evan Drake (Tom Skerritt).

After the Diane debacle, the irony of the sixth season is that wedding bells are in the air. Carla is on the verge of hitching up with her Boston Bruins boyfried, Eddie LeBec (Jay Thomas), until a string of bad luck threatens to tear apart the "two most superstitious people in the world." Then Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) is the victim of a prank that turns serious when he decides to dump live-in psychologist-lover Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) in order to "pursue the fair Rebecca." Other events of the season include Sam as a rapping sportscaster, Sam and Woody being sold in a charity auction, Woody entering a romance with an older woman while dressed up as Mark Twain, and another showdown with Gary's Old Town Tavern. <I>Cheers</I> missed Shelley Long, but it remained a high-quality show; her career missed <I>Cheers</I> infinitely more. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

    Description

CHEERS - THE COMPLETE SIXTH SEASON focuses on the colorful staff and offbeat patrons of a friendly Boston bar where "everybody knows your name." Starring Shelley Long as Diane Chambers and Ted Danson as Sam Malone, Cheers co-stars Nick Colasanto as "Coach," Rhea Perlman as Carla Tortelli, John Ratzenberger as Cliff and George Wendt as Norm.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This season brought new life to the series.......2006-07-10

The departure of Shelley Long from Cheers was a difficult hurdle to overcome, and her departure certainly left some shoes that needed filled. In retrospect, however, it seems like it was for the best. Kirstie Alley joins the cast in Season 6 as Rebecca Howe, a corporate brown-noser who ends up managing the bar because she can't seem to cut it at the corporate level. Sam, of course, is attracted to her, but the nature of his pursuit is different then it was with Diane, and is therefore fresh and not repetitive.

Cheers, in fact, does just fine without Diane. By Season 6 Frazier and Lilleth are regulars on the show, and the cast just seems balanced. Norm and Cliff continue to entertain, Carla continues to make her wisecracks, and Woody continues to play the dumb country bumpkin. Sam continues to womanize, though he's getting older now, and Rebecca and the Cranes bring an eclectic mix of personality into the already dynamic cast. The impressive thing about Cheers is that it made it Eleven seasons and yet remained fresh and exciting through almost all of it. This season features some hilarious episodes, and certainly some of the most memorable. It also features a stint by Tom Skerritt as Evan Drake, the corporate bigwig Rebecca is in love with. All in all this is a great season.

5 out of 5 stars Cheers Season 6.......2006-03-20

I am an absolut Cheers fan und can not wait until Season 7 is avalable.
The show is great. Good quality.

4 out of 5 stars Enter the neurotic Rebecca Howe.......2006-02-22

The sixth season of Cheers saw the second major cast change in the history of the show. Only two years after Woody Harrelson's Woody Boyd replaced the beloved Coach, played by Nicholas Colasanto, Kirstie Alley stepped into the large shoes left by the departure of Shelley Long as season six began.

As a youngster, I didn't begin watching Cheers until the later years, thus I only remember Cheers with Rebecca, not Diane Chambers. Watching the first five seasons on DVD truly helped me appreciate the amazing chemistry between Ted Danson's Sam Malone and Long's Chambers. Surely everybody knew it would be tough to have that chemistry again, but viewers stuck with the show and it continued to be one of the top comedy shows on the air.

As the season begins, we find Woody and Carla (Rhea Perlman) still working at Cheers, but wearing goofy green and white striped shirts, as Sam has sold the bar to a large corporation and taken off on his boat after Diane left him. Norm (George Wendt), Cliff (John Ratzenberger) and Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) still inhabit their favorite watering hole, despite the changes.

However, after his boat sinks, Sam returns to Cheers, looking to go back to the glory days he enjoyed in his bar. Instead, he has to return first as a relief bartender, then as a full time bartender under the watchful eye of the new boss, Rebecca Howe.

Kirstie Alley truly shined in the role of Rebecca. Her neurotic and nervous behavior is absolutely perfect and she is able to get a great chemistry with Sam right away. It is obvious that Sam is into Rebecca, and the more she stays away, the harder he works to get to her. Rebecca's ridiculous crush on her boss (Played by Tom Skeritt) is a great story line and her constant snubbing of Sam makes for great television moments.

Of course Danson is still strong as former Major Leaguer Sam. He finds it humbling to return to the bar a broken man and takes the part time gig as a way to get back into the place that for so long, was his home. He eventually returns to the Sam viewers knew and loved, playing practical jokes on Gary's Old Towne Tavern and dutifully chasing every woman in Boston.

As Carla, Perlman is an entertainer. In this season, Carla is pregnant. Her and her new husband Eddie LeBec (Jay Thomas) welcome the baby and Carla also finds out that she is going to be a grandmother. Her constant barbing of Cliff is a riot and she takes to putting down Rebecca just as she did Diane for the previous five years.

Ratzenberger and Wendt, as Cliff and Norm, are the greatest barflies in the history of television. While neither will admit it, they are probably each other's best friends. Their crazy ideas and "interesting" conversations are what anyone would hope to find if they walked in to a random bar in the 1980s.

Harrelson continues his portrayal of the innocent Indiana farmboy turned bartender. Woody is one of the best character's on the show, simply because he is so simple and sees things as only black and white. HIs turn as Mark Twain in a local theater production is quite amusing.

Kelsey Grammer joins the regular cast as Dr. Frasier Crane, a psychologist who tends to spend too much time in Cheers. He brings a touch of upper class to the bar, yet at the same time, can fit right in with the guys. This season we get to know the love of his life, Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) a little better, and the insight into that relationship provides a number of story lines.

Once again, as has been the case with the last few seasons, the one downside to this set is the lack of extras. Surely with the success that this show had, there must be some interviews and such that could be put together. I guess we'll just have to wait for other seasons to see if something comes along.

5 out of 5 stars A very good season again for Cheers.......2006-02-21

This was another fine season for Cheers with the addition of Rebecca. This addition changed the story line for Cheers and propelled the series to new heights as the focus was no longer on the Sam-Diane relationship. This allowed for the supporting cast to become more rounded. BTW, has anyone heard of a possible release date for season 8?

5 out of 5 stars Better with Becky.......2006-02-20

I'm always amazed at all the hoopla over Diane leaving. Good riddance, I say. Rebecca had so much more depth. Diane was just snooty and boring, and she had bad hair. Rebecca is hysterical, especially in the initial episodes, and the greater liberties with plotlines were very welcome, especially the Robin Colcord episodes.

"Cheers" is one of the all time great sitcoms. Why the delay for Season 9? Usually Frasier and Cheers are released around the same time. The final season for "Frasier" is already out and Season 10 doesn t seem to be too far behind. Whats going on? I own the first 8 seasons and would really like to complete the collection. Paramount..whats the problem? Please finish releasing all the seasons of "Cheers".
