I Didn't Care for This Movie.......2007-05-09
I purchased this movie for my daughter. My friend recommended it; she said it was one of her favorite movies in high school (many moons ago). I've only caught bits and pieces of it, but in short, Katherine Heigl goes on vacation with her father, Gerard Depardieu, and she leads everyone at the vacation resort to believe that her Dad is her lover, in order to catch the attention of a young and handsome hottie at the resort. Katherine Heigl's character is also a compulsive liar in the movie; it doesn't seem to bother her that everyone at the resort thinks her Dad is a pervert (because they think they are a couple). My daughter likes this movie and asks to watch it frequently, but I'm not very fond of it.
Awsome.......2007-01-04
This movie is so good and funny..I have loved this movie since it has came out..
Thank Heaven For Little Girls .......2006-08-16
(3.5/5 stars) Gerard Depardieu is Andre, the father who is so desperate to have his daughter, Nicole, back as his little girl again that he plays along when she pretends he is her lover in order to make the guy she likes jealous. Very cute movie, with some funny moments as initially everyone except Depardieu knows about Nicole's little ploys. Katherine Heigl is a good choice for Nicole, a teenager embarrassed by her father and anxious to make her summer vacation memorable. Not exactly thought provoking material, but pleasant and enjoyable all around. Sure to please its intended audience, based on other reviews here. Maurice Chevalier would be glad.
I love this movie.......2005-12-26
I got this dvd for Christmas. It was the best gift I got! I have been watching this since I was seven. It just so cute and you can watch it a million times and you still laugh! its so cute. I also have been looking everywhere for the sound track, I know a lot of the songs are by the Baha Men, but I would like to know if you can still get the sound track. If anyone knows how to get it please E-mail me!! Dalton James is so cute in this movie.
Adorable! Sweet! Hilarious!.......2005-09-02
Fourteen year old Nicole's parents are divorced and her French father, Andre, is taking her on a tropical vacation to the Bahamas. Reluctantly, Nikki leaves her mother in New York City for the ten day getaway. She is at the height of her adolescence and she's anything but excited to be in a place that is filled with "old people" as she puts it to her father. While there, she meets seventeen year old Ben, and she's instantly infatuated with him. Wanting to impress her crush, Nikki tells him that she is slightly older than she actually is, and that her father is not her dad, but her boyfriend! Nikki persuades her father into going along with the whole charade, and soon enough, the entire resort finds out and they are absolutely repulsed by the fact that a man of Andre's age has such a young "girlfriend." Hilarious situations and a number of laughs make this movie a winner. One of my all time favorites.

Never before available on home video and unseen on television since 1973, the 1950 production of <I>Annie Get Your Gun</I> has achieved somewhat legendary status, most notably for who would inherit the role Ethel Merman had made famous on Broadway in 1946. MGM originally cast Judy Garland, but her ongoing drug and alcohol problems led to her being fired and replaced by Betty Hutton. Fortunately, the bright and brassy Hutton sparkles in this highly fictionalized story of Annie Oakley, the sharpshooter who wins fame in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and wins the heart of fellow sharpshooter Frank Butler (Howard Keel). Dashing baritone Keel was beginning his career as one of MGM's favorite leading men in the 1950s (including <I>Seven Brides for Seven Brothers</I> and <I>Kiss Me, Kate</I>). Together they make gold of the many Irving Berlin hits--"Doin' What Comes Naturally," "Anything You Can Do," "They Say It's Wonderful," "I Got the Sun in the Morning," and the classic anthem "There's No Business Like Show Business."
<I>Annie Get Your Gun</I> is unquestionably a product of the 1950s. Keel's relentless chauvinism and Hutton's constant fawning over him grow tiresome (though she does stand up to him in a battle of the sexes), and the Indians wear full headdresses and face paint, say "Ugh," and destroy modern conveniences. (In the name of political correctness, the 1999 Broadway revival starring Bernadette Peters removed "I'm an Indian Too" and received its own share of criticism from purists.) Quibbles aside, the excellent cast and immortal score make <I>Annie Get Your Gun</I> a classic musical. It's great to have it back. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>
Customer Reviews:
... and the winner is ... BETTY HUTTON!.......2007-05-17
I am as big a Judy Garland fan as ANYBODY, believe me. But #1 - she didn't want to do the movie in the first place; #2 - she was lack luster and fatigued looking at best in the few scenes that were completed. Sure her vocals were great, but we're rating the movie here, not the soundtrack. Betty Hutton is a different kind of singer, performer, actor than Judy ... apples and oranges. This movie called for someone of Betty's energy and her voice is perfect for the role. Those who say she can't sing as great as Judy are making an unfair comparison. It's like comparing Fred Astaire with Gene Kelly; BOTH ARE GREAT, but very different in style.
Betty wanted to make this movie desparately, Judy did not. Hutton was fantastic in the role, period. Too bad the studio, cast and crew (especially Howard Keel - who I really like in other movies and in Dallas) were so hateful to her just because they wanted Judy in the role. That wasn't Betty Hutton's fault. Actually, MGM tested their own contract players before approaching Hutton (June Allyson, Betty Garrett, etc.) but ended up requesting Hutton from Paramount. Paramount got Fred Astaire on loan for "Let's Dance" with Hutton so that MGM could have Betty for Annie.
This is a wonderful musical and we should all just accept that Betty Hutton IS ANNIE OAKLEY!
P.S. If you want to hear some GREAT singing from Hutton, order "The Stork Club" ... Betty will knock your socks off singing, "Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief", "I'm Just a Square in a Social Circle" and others!
GREAT MUSIC, GREAT CAST, GREAT MOVIE.......2007-05-09
BEING A MUSICAL FAN, WHAT A DELIGHT THIS MOVIE IS. SOMETIMES A LITTLE OVER ACTED AS THE OLDER MOVIES TEND TO BE, BUT ON THE WHOLE A DELIGHT FROM BEGINNING TO END. THIS MOVIE GOES TO SHOW THAT "THERE IS NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS" AND THE ENTERTAINMENT VALUE OF A MOVIE LIKE THIS IS PRICELESS. THE COLOURS AND COSTUMES ARE SPECTACULAR AND IT BRINGS BACK THE MEMORIES OF WHAT A GOOD LOOKING FELLOW HOWARD KEEL WAS BACK THEN.
I ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE.
Movie Great Disc Dodgy.......2007-04-04
The movie is as bold and brassy as I remembered it from seeing it as a Kid. I enjoyed Betty Hutton enormously. However I am from Australia and the disc is zoned incorrectly for me so that I have to reset the zone on my computer to view it. My DVD player counts down each time I do this so I am assuming that I can only view this disc a limited number of times. Also the disc box is a strange cheap plastic which does not close properly once it has been opened the first time.
Wonderful.......2007-03-02
I love musicals and this one is great. How wonderful that it is out agian. Two great songs came from this movie. No bussiness like showbussiness and Anything you can do I ca do Better. I'm not sure if they are originally from this movie but man are they great in this movie. Betty Hutton did Great.
Great Songs!.......2007-02-19
I like the movie because of the songs like: i'm an indian to, naturally, there's no business like show business. And so much more and I really enjoyed it. and Betty Hutton was a laph her singing and dancing was so funny! And just one fact Annie Oakley was a real person! I hope you buy the movie and enjoy it!

<I>The Greatest Show on Earth</I> is a heaping helping of flapdoodle served up by one of Hollywood's canniest entertainers: producer-director Cecil B. DeMille. This overripe melodrama purports to be life inside the Ringling Brothers Circus; maybe it's not, but the circus ought to be like this. The actors wrestling with the purple dialogue are: early-career Charlton Heston, as the tough-as-nails circus manager; Cornel Wilde and Betty Hutton as trapeze artistes; and Gloria Grahame (who won an Oscar), dangling from elephants. Best of all, James Stewart plays a clown who--for mysterious reasons--never removes his makeup. (Stewart took the supporting role simply because he'd always wanted to play a clown.) This is a fried-baloney sandwich of a movie: it ain't sophisticated, and probably isn't good for you, but once you start you can't stop. It was the box-office champ of 1952, and it shocked everybody by winning the best picture Oscar. <I>--Robert Horton</I>
Customer Reviews:
Take Me Out To The Circus.......2007-04-05
Cecil de Mille's THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH won an Oscar for best picture in 1952. While it may not be the greatest movie ever made, it certainly made me want to see a real live circus again, no small feat. The stunts are both funny and fantastic, the animals majestic, the circus comraderie feels genuine, and you can practicallly smell the cotton candy. Yes, there is a plot here too. A very young Charlton Heston is the circus manager who must ride herd on everyone. Betty Hutton and Cornel Wilde play trapeze artists; Jimmy Stewart is a clown with a past. There is a romantic triangle as well as good guys triumphing over the villains. Almost everyone-- but not quite-- winds up happy in the end.
You should certainly see-- if you never have before-- this movie but don't take it too seriously. As they say, they don't make movies like this anymore.
Greatest Show on Earth.......2007-03-27
Received this DVD in a timely manner. I haven't played it yet, but it looks to be in excellent condition.
Brassy Big Top Corn: Silly But Entertaining.......2007-03-14
Every one was shocked when THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH won Oscars for Best Motion Picture and Best Screenplay; there was nothing about the film that could be considered "great art." At the same time, however, SHOW was a lot of fun, and certainly audiences of the day flocked to it, making it the single biggest grossing film of 1952.
The story is purple-prose soap opera. Circus manager Brad Braden (Charleton Heston) is doing a balancing act between rival arielist stars Sebastian (Cornel Wilde) and Holly (Betty Hutton)--the later of whom is torn in her affections between the two. Add in a lovely but common show girl (Dorothy Lamour), a jealous elephant trainer (Lyle Bettger), the object of his affections (Gloria Graham), a clown with a mysterious past (Jimmy Stewart), high wire accidents, and a train wreck--all mixed well by Cecil B. DeMille's eye for larger-than-life spectacle. The result is brassy, silly, corny, and thoroughly enjoyable.
Seen today, the big attraction here is the chance to see the circus when it was still traveling by rail and performing under "the big top." Filmed with the cooperation of Ringling Brothers-Barnum and Bailey, SHOW allows us to see what was involved in organizing the lavish show that was the circus in the 1950s, a world filled with roustabouts, elephants, barkers, peanut vendors, acrobats, and all the rest. One of the more interesting aspects of this is Emmett Kelly, one of America's greatest clowns, who appears throughout the film as himself.
THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH is lots of flash and dazzle, a little song and dance, Charleton Heston in his first major role, Betty Hutton in one of her final films (she did most of her own stunt work), and lots of corny charm. It might not really be the "greatest" show on earth, but it is very picturesque. The film isn't restored, but it isn't in bad condition; sadly, there are no bonuses at all.
GFT, Amazon Reviewer
An entertaining picture, just not the Best Picture.......2007-02-24
"The Greatest Show on Earth" is a good movie and it's entertaining enough, it's just not an Oscar-winning calibre movie. As other reviewers have noted, this film was probably given its Best Picture Oscar as a kind of life-time achievement award to Cecil B. DeMille. It wasn't that the Academy felt that they had unjustly snubbed DeMille in the past for any specific film, it was just that he had always made those kind of epic cast-of-thousands types of pictures that drew in the audiences but that rarely won Oscars. Plus, a large body of DeMille's work had been done before the Academy Awards even came into existence in 1927. The whole thing seems especially unjust when you look at the competition that year. Two of the other nominees - "High Noon" and "The Quiet Man" are considered unique and classic to this day. Also, there is a film in the top 10 of AFI Best Films from that year that didn't even get nominated for best picture - Singin' in the Rain - which is arguably the best musical film ever made. It's rather ironic that just four years later the Academy could have probably awarded DeMille more legitimately when he made his last movie, the epic "The Ten Commandments", in 1956.
This movie is basically a documentary on how the Ringling Brothers circus operated in the early 50's, and large chunks of film are taken up showing how the Big Top was assembled, the manual labor involved, how the entire circus - including wild animals - was transported via rail, and basically just all of the hard work that went on behind the scenes. There is also a pretty spectacular scene near the end of the film involving the two trains as they are transporting the circus from one town to another. I say "was" because the circus as it is portrayed in this movie closed down and ceased to exist in 1956. The truth is that the Ringling Brothers circus never fully recovered financially from the double whammy of the Great Depression and a fatal fire that killed over 100 people in Hartford, Connecticut in 1944 and thus was in the process of failing even when this movie was made. The plot of the movie is very thin, the main thread being an uninspired love triangle involving the two stars of the trapeze act, Holly and the Great Sebastion, played by Betty Hutton and Cornel Wilde respectively, and the managing boss of the traveling show, Brad Braden, played by Charleton Heston. The subplots include an elephant trainer who is obsessed over a girl in the show who doesn't care for him, some small-time mobsters whose crooked games get thrown off the lot by Brad, and "Buttons" the clown, played by Jimmy Stewart, who never takes off his makeup and who seems to have a mysterious past. All of these plot lines are just there to hold the documentary part of the film together and also as a backdrop for all of the circus acts that are numerous and quite spectacular to behold, especially the acrobatic acts. Quite honestly, one-fourth into the movie you can see the outcome of the dramatic portion of the movie coming at you from a mile away. This makes the fact that this movie won Best Motion Picture Screenplay an even odder decision than the Best Picture award.
There is some interesting trivia involving the film. Famous clown Emmett Kelly can be seen at one point in the film without makeup - a fact that Mr. Kelly was not happy about. Also, Dorothy Lamour has a supporting role in this film, and during one of her musical performances in the show the camera pans to the audience -as it often does in this film - but this time you get a brief glimpse of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope enjoying the show. The inside joke here is that Lamour, Crosby, and Hope were the costars of the popular series of "Road to ..." movies of the 40's and 50's. The strangest thing about the DVD itself is that there are absolutely no extras included. Since many films include "Making of" extras on their DVD's, even if they are decades old since some stock footage usually remains somewhere, how strange that a movie that is basically a cover for a documentary doesn't do the same.
The Greatest Show On Earth.......2007-02-18
This movie is a classic and has all the best actors in it. This movie is circus with excitement, drama and more. Good movie to see.

Amazon.com essential video
During World War II, Hollywood's patriotic duty was to shoot stirring dramas and good-hearted comedies that celebrated America's brave soldiers and honored their loyal, virtuous wives and girlfriends. Which goes a long way toward explaining why this delirious Preston Sturges farce, filmed in 1943 at the height of the war effort (and of its director's powers), was delayed for a year while Paramount executives wrestled with Sturges's irreverence: in <I>Morgan's Creek</I>, the writer-director tweaked those stereotypes with his tale of Trudy Kockenlocker, a small-town girl who only wants to send our boys off with a smile. That she does, but she wakes up after an all-night party with vague memories of a dubious wedding and soon finds herself pregnant.
Trudy, played by the ebullient Betty Hutton, is wholesome, sexy, and something of a ditz, in contrast to Sturges's usual savvy heroines (represented instead by Trudy's teenaged younger sister, played by Diana Lynn). Trudy's savior is would-be boyfriend Norval, played to apoplectic perfection by the rubber-faced Eddie Bracken, who was never better than in this wide-eyed, pratfall-happy performance as the weary but loyal draft reject who stands by his girl. As Trudy's father, Sturges regular William Demarest likewise achieves a series of comic peaks as the exasperated and increasingly desperate Officer Kockenlocker.
Like Sturges's other Bracken-Demarest vehicle, the equally fine <I>Hail, the Conquering Hero</I>, <I>The Miracle of Morgan's Creek</I> was unique among wartime movies for its satirical sting and unblinking eye for hypocrisy on the home front. It's also enormous fun, a comedic romp that epitomizes Sturges's kinetic, high-speed style. <I>--Sam Sutherland</I>
Description
After a wild farewell party for the troops, Trudy Kockenlocker, a small-town girl with a soft spot for American soldiers, wakes up to find that she married someone and can't remember his name. Even worse, he's disappeared and she learns she's pregnant!

Phew!.......2007-06-16
Watching this film was an exhausting, but fun experience. A great chance to see Betty Hutton in a non-singing role and also a great introduction to the work of Preston Sturges who I am going to have to follow up on.
Love that Betty!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-03
This is one of the funniest movies I can watch it over and over..If you are fan of Betty Hutton I'm sure you have already seen this one but if you haven't it a must. If your not sure who she is you need to watch..A little risky for its time. I just love Preston Sturges all of his movies are great..Really great supporting cast. Diana Lynn is everyones little sister. William Dermerest, Uncle Charlie on My Three Sons, is a blast as her father. Eddie Bracken great. Take time and watch this one...
Comedy Elevated to Greatness.......2007-04-05
A walk through a cultural museum of societal hypocrisy, The Miracle of Morgan's Creek, 1944 lambastes the mores of the 1940's. Since the action takes place in a small Mid-Western town with the usual local yokels and the newly arrived GI's, boy's and girls do without the preliminaries as the privates are marched to the grim reaper. The girls give it up with romantic heroism. The fumbling in the dark after an evening of spiked lemonade causes pregnancy and social chaos. Betty Hutton is the prettiest girl in town and the most innocent soon-to-be mother in history thanks to the movie code and sexual regulations left over from the 19th Century. She got married, but to whom? No sex without marriage of course, but what a convoluted script to get this idea across as to preserve the GI pin-ups honor. The laughs burst from the cover up. Preston Sturges, a true genius, pumped it up to the hokey, sentimental climax. Slapstick and screwball comedy are melded to a script that can be described as a screenplay converted to a play and then regurgitated to a film. The scenes are very long and the actors walk the town as though they were on a stage. You have to see the lack of quick cuts to understand what I mean. It just doesn't look like a Hollywood film.
Much has been said about the in-house players that worked in Sturges' films. William Demarest is hilarious, a pratfall a minute. Eddie Braken practically invents the lovable nerd. Diana Lynn is the most sarcastic teen ever. McGinty is the Governor of the Great State of Anywhere. All these stereotypes are immortalized in a million films since.
Are Sturges' comedies as important as Hollywood's classic dramas? Yes!
Huh?.......2007-03-29
I am a huge Betty Hutton fan. I loved her in "Annie Get Your Gun" & "The Greatest Show On Earth". Upon learning of her recent passing I took a chance on purchasing "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek", a film that I had never seen. Most reviewers gave it glowing remarks. Well, I'm here to tell you that I found this movie a huge let-down. Not only was this film NOT funny, but the acting was so bad that I found it tedious and annoying, especially the acting of Eddie Bracken. The story was also lame. I read that this movie was a bit risque for the 40's because of the subject matter (Betty Hutton's surprise marriage & pregnancy). By today's standards this movie would be rated a solid "G". How times have indeed changed! When I think of all the worthy films that lay dormant and are begging for a DVD release and then see this dribble, I shake my head in disbelief. Save your money.
MY favorite movie of all time!!!!.......2007-01-18
I just adore this movie. Never has a movie made me laugh so hard! Eddie Bracken is hysterical as a nervous, yet willing boyfriend. Betty Hutton is gorgeous and the BEST actress in this film I have ever seen. Not like the generic's we have today. Without telling all about this movie, considering the time period in which it was made, it was a little risque'! I can't believe( and would like to know) how it got past the censors! If you want a serious good laugh, you've just got to see this movie. I know I've watched it 100 times and it never fails to make me break up!

Timothy Hutton and Sean Penn play two young men from wealthy families who sell government secrets to the Russians. Based on the true story of Christopher Boyce (Hutton) and Daulton Lee (Penn), this is sometimes edgy, occasionally humorous, and ultimately heartbreaking. Boyce, whose job it is to guard top-secret government papers, becomes disillusioned with the United States and decides to make a deal with the Soviets. His partner in espionage is propelled by less-ideal reasons for his acts, as Penn plays a grungy drug addict in it for the money. An intelligent script is matched on two counts: by John Schlesinger's tight direction and by provocative performances by both actors. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Description
Academy AwardÂ(r) winners* Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People) and Sean Penn (Dead Man Walking) deliver "superb performances" (Variety) in a true-story spy thriller that is "scathing, arresting" (The New York Times) and laced with white-knuckle excitement. From OscarÂ(r) winners** John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy) and Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List), the film blows the lid off the modern-day American dream with its riveting story of twoyoung men of privilege, money and ambition who end up selling out their country, ruining their families and destroying their lives. Chris Boyce (Hutton) works a low-level job at a defense plant where he uncovers documents that prove that the CIA is secretly coercing foreign governments. Heconfides in his conniving, fast-talking friend, Andrew Daulton Lee (Penn), a reckless drug dealer and user, who convinces him to sell this information to the Soviets for big bucks. Lee boldly cuts a deal with the KGB, but soon the stakes spin out of control as the Soviets up the ante, Lee descends further into drug abuse and the CIA prepares to take the informants down! *Hutton: 1980, Supporting Actor, Ordinary People; Penn: 2003, Actor, Mystic River **Schlesinger: Director, Midnight Cowboy (1969); Zaillian: Writing, Schindler's List (1993)

Interesting Look at a Complex True Story.......2007-02-20
The book by the same name allows you to understand a bit more about the characters, but this is a well done film that does bring the story to life. Not all scenes are gripping, but the overall story is thought provoking. Christopher Boyce was either naive or cunning when he began his saga. By the time he went to prison he was simply a well-manipulated informer. The book and this film show that transformation well.
Read the follow-up book, The Flight of the Falcon about Christopher Boyce's escape from prison, and recapture. It would make an even better movie I think. Incidentally, when Daulton Lee got out of prison in 1998, Sean Penn hired him as part of his staff. Christopher Boyce was released a few years ago.
Sean Penn's first great launch!.......2006-05-02
Two adolescents dare to play hard with a Top Security dossier. In their infinite immaturity, they think it is a piece of cake to get in and get out from this circle of espionage and betrayal. But this is far to be a simple game, once you cross the line forget it; you are inside and there is no way out; it's a real deep end where you will have t assume your own responsibilities of your own decisions. It is not a simple choice for make some money and then get out.
So once the first step has been done they will begin to deal with a double pressure of both sides; conspiracy and betrayal for one and major information requirements for the other.
A fascinating exploration about the final consequences of a trivial decision that will become for them a true mortal boomerang.
John Schlessinger with his firm hand made an unforgettable and high caliber tension thriller with a very young Sean Penn and the consecrated Timothy Hutton .
Sean Penn Steals the Show in a Story of Espionage.......2006-02-07
A young Sean Penn steals the show from Timothy Hutton in a based-on-real-life story of two young California men who get in over their heads spying for the Soviets. Look for Chris Makepeace as Penn's younger brother.

i saw this for a good price. i checked for reviews. there were all theese great reviews. whatever! the movie has pretty
much no action. the sound video actin is good, but its lonngg
and sloowww. there was some good nudity. that is the only thing keepin me from totally considering this as a loss. ok movie jus dont expect action jus anticipate the nudity cause that is the only thing interesting besides the falcon in this movie. i love falcons, so there you go. i think of it as good enough to keep thats it. maybe ill pop it in to watch a long slow movie with a girlfriend. take this as the downside review
so all theese other reviews don fool you into thinking this movie is all that
A classic Cold War politcal thriller.......2004-12-08
I watched this film as part of a bonus assignment for an American government class.
The Falcon and the Snowman is a political thriller about two young guys (one with a great future - Timothy Hutton - and one without one - Sean Penn) who decide to capitalize on their government's secrets. In a nutshell, they "sew the wind and reap the whirlwind."
But this film was made during the 1980s during the Reagan presidency, a time in which the cold war with the Communist Soviet Union was on everyone's mind. No doubt, the filmmakers capitalized on this concept.
This film also contains a good deal of what one might call "Bonnie and Clyde" syndrome. This is where the viewers know that the main characters are villains, and yet they receive so much exposure to these characters, that they end up rooting for them in end, forgetting that they received what they deserved.
Actually, they received better than they deserved: Christopher Boyce (Hutton) received 40 years, and Daulton Lee (Penn) received a life sentence. One hundred years before they both would have been put to death.
One of my major complaints is the amount of nudity in the film. Sorry if it sounds old-fashioned, but just bear with me here. Would this film really have lost any of its artistic merit without these scenes? Would it have lost any of its suspense or intrigue had the filmmakers at a bare minimum simply toned it down at least? So, I can only give this otherwise intriguing film three stars.

<I>--David Horiuchi</I>

... and the winner is ...

Great Value.......2007-06-20
The Stork Club is the first film on this disk, but the quality leaves something to be desired. However, it is still watchable, and since no better prints exist, it suffices. Hutton plays Judy Peabody, a hat check girl at the Stork Club who saves a man from drowning (Barry Fitzgerald). His Irish brogue and simple ways make her think he is poor, so she nicknames him Pop and plans to take care of him. Little does she know he's a very wealthy man and decides to anonymously reward her with her own ample bank account. When Judy's boyfriend Danny (Dan Defore) comes back from service, he gets the wrong idea about Pops and thinks there has been an arrangement in his absence. It is up to Judy to set everything straight, even when Danny will not believe the truth.
The highlight of this film is the music, which is played at the height of animation thanks to Hutton's presence. The most catchy of the songs is "Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief" which is played early in the film. Later, we have "I'm Just a Square in the Social Circle" and "If I Had a Dozen Hearts."
The second film is more entertaining. The Perils of Pauline is loosely based on the life of serial queen Pearl White (Hutton), the girl who constantly triumphed against the villians, but only after many suspenseful stunts. She begins as a seamstress who breaks into the theater by accident. She proves to be too unprofessional for the stage and accidentally falls into the movies (where Snub Pollard and Chester Conklin make appearances). There she finds real fame doing dangerous stunts but longing for the man who antagonized her so much in the theater.
Somehow I can't imagine that White behaved this way, but Hutton certainly did, and she is the attraction here anyway. It really doesn't matter whether the biographical information is correct because the movie itself is so much fun.
There are several songs in the film, and Hutton shines in them, as musical performances were her true forte. First is "The Sewing Machine," an ode to the appliance that women were strapped to at the early part of the century. Next is her most animated and funny performance; she sings "Rumble, Rumble, Rumble" in a typical and great manner. "I Wish I Didn't Love You So" was nominated for an Academy award. It is slow, romantic and beautiful. Last is "Papa Don't Preach to Me," a lesser song in many ways, but very upbeat and showy.
Classic Betty Hutton Films.......2007-05-09
What a gal!! Always fun. Will watch these again and again, for many years to come. Well worth the buying.
Wonderful Betty Hutton.......2007-03-11
This DVD contains two of Betty Hutton's best films, The Stork Club (1945) and The Perils Of Pauline (1946). The former is the best of the two. The music is terrific, and the chemistry between Barry Fitzgerald and Hutton is something to behold. Perils contains too much soap opera, and John Lund is almost a statue. But Betty shines once again in the musical numbers, proves herself to be a fine comedian, and she could act! Enjoy. One wishes Hutton had signed with a better film company, for her talents were formidable, and few of her films display them all. Paramount's musical numbers, especially the choreography, pale badly when compared with MGM's.

MAINTAINS BETTY HUTTON'S REPUTATION FOR ENERGY........2006-05-31
Enthusiastically ambulating throughout this charming and funny story of silent-film Hollywood, Betty Hutton depicts a mythlike Pearl White, framed by fascinating shots of prototypical movie-making. A romantic plot involving Betty and her princely co-star, John Lund, is developed in a leisurely fashion until the rather frenetic ending. Hutton's singing is often spectacular, as with her opening number, and enjoyment is developed as the viewer identifies early stars in this fine example of 40's cinema.
Perilous Presentation.......2006-05-27
I had enjoyed Betty Hutton's and William Demarest's performances so much in "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" that I was naturally drawn to "The Perils of Pauline" where the two were reunited in starring roles. The film is fast moving, breezy and exudes a certain level of charm in its fun, nostalgic presentation of the classic silent movie serials. Hutton is very good in her teary-eyed portrayal of Pearl White, (Pauline) and gives a spirited, if not over the top performance, particularly in the song sequences. The Frank Loesser songs are quite memorable as well, one even being nominated for an Academy Award. Billy DeWolfe is very enjoyable as the requisite kooky but good-hearted sidekick, especially when playing the teeth-gnashing villain in the filmed serials. Demarest seems a bit on the subdued side, particularly after seeing him in several Sturges pictures just prior to this one. John Lund also seems to walk through this picture, stiff as a stuffed shirt, (which, to be fair, is the nature of his character) but, unfortunately, Lund carries that rigidity over into his warmer more sincere moments as well, implying perhaps that the direction on this picture was slightly less than stellar. Overall this film clearly drives home the point that MGM and Fox led the way when it came to big, Technicolor musicals of this era. And, speaking of Technicolor, I need to mention that this transfer is actually quite "contrasty" and somewhat soft compared to other musicals of the era out on DVD. I also notice a good bit of digital "monkeying" with the picture, notably at the end of scenes and through the transitions when the picture would actually slow down, strobe or even freeze frame for a moment sometimes with a jarring and annoying effect. I would suspect that this transfer to DVD may have been made from a "dupe" print and the sub standard quality of the picture had a somewhat negative effect on my overall enjoyment of this otherwise sweet little musical comedy.
I haven't seen this in so long!.......2006-05-10
