Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there's no crying in baseball! <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>Customer Reviews:

This gentle comedy almost seems like something out of Hollywood's Golden Age, a movie that might have been made by a talented contract director, perhaps featuring Don Ameche and Claudette Colbert. But in fact it stars George Clooney as an investigative columnist for a New York newspaper and Michelle Pfeiffer as an architect. Both single parents, the two meet and bicker and develop a relationship over the course of a day while their young children play together. Michael Hoffman (<I>Restoration</I>) directs with a good sense of what's funny about harried caretakers and kids who do whatever they want to do. The story stretches out of shape a bit when Clooney's character has to rally to prove some point of corruption at City Hall; nobody involved seems quite up to making that subplot believable, but all that really matters about this very nice movie is the winning love story. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>Description
In this charming romantic comedy, three-time Academy Award nominee Michelle Pfeiffer ("Dangerous Liaisons," "The Fabulous Baker Boys," "Love Field") and "ER" star George Clooney find that opposites attract whether they like it or not. Melanie Parker (Pfeiffer) is juggling single parenthood with a career as an architect. Jack Taylor (Clooney) is a commitment-shy newspaper cloumnist who only has his daughter every other weekend. When their kids miss a school field trip, Melanie and Jack agree to share babysitting for a day, resulting in twelve hours of hilarious misadventures with one unexpected twist.Customer Reviews:

Scott McPherson's off-Broadway hit made a strong transition to the screen in this 1996 film by director Jerry Zaks. Diane Keaton stars as a woman who, while taking care of her vegetating father in Florida, discovers that she has leukemia. Only her long-estranged sister (Meryl Streep) or the sister's children can provide a possible match for a bone-marrow transplant. But the reunion is a rocky one, marked both by Streep's guilt at having abandoned her sister to take care of their father, and by the explosive dynamic between Streep and her rebellious, pyromaniac oldest son (Leonardo DiCaprio). As grim as this all sounds, there is a strong vein of black humor running through it that has the viewer laughing at unlikely moments (particularly Keaton's visits to her distracted doctor, a surprisingly funny Robert De Niro). But rest assured: tears will flow, even as the film makes you reassess all of your own family relationships. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>Description
Leonardo DiCaprio (TITANIC, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN) drives an electrifying performance as the criminally rebellious son in this funny and stirring tale of one family's humor and heartache. Seventeen years ago, fiercely independent Lee (Meryl Streep -- ADAPTATION) left home ... and left behind her kindhearted sister Bessie (Diane Keaton -- THE FIRST WIVES CLUB) to care for their father, Marvin (Hume Cronyn). But now Lee is returning with her teenage son (DiCaprio), for a homecoming that's sure to turn the entire household upside down! Also starring Robert DeNiro (CASINO), this entertaining motion picture proves that people you know the least may be the ones you need the most!Customer Reviews:

The ever-underrated director Robert M. Young (<I>Dominick and Eugene</I>) made this tense variation on <I>The Postman Always Rings Twice</I>. Edward James Olmos and Maria Conchita Alonso star as a long-married couple who run a fish store. When a young drifter (Arie Verveen) enters their lives as an employee and inhabitant of their home, he and Alonso commence an affair made all the more dangerous when the couple's creepy son (Steven Schub) moves back in. The ensuing Oedipal competitiveness grows to an explosive finale, and while the mythic underpinnings of the story may be a bit obvious, the film moves as fluidly and is as involving as any of Young's fine work. Lots of suspense, a richly noiresque tone, and terrific acting on everyone's part, particularly Schub. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>Customer Reviews:

On the other hand, if you have an hour to fritter away and are not in a particularly picky/discriminating mood, give this one a shot. You might be surprised to find yourself grinning more often than you expected to :-)
My only kudos to Dennis Hopper is his choice of Tom Berenger. This is one heck of a good thespian, and he shines, even when cast in an otherwise silly, non-entity of a movie. Sure, Erika gets her share of attention, but mostly when she's baring it. And McNamara, well, I can't remember any other movie he was in, so I'll just say he has latent talent. A little too cute for this role, maybe.
You've probably read other reviews, so I won't bore you with a detailed storyline. Tom and McNamara are Navy guys sent to escort a prisoner from a Marine detention center. Turns out that the prisoner is a woman (Erika) and a slippery one at that. Several travails follow. Erika and McNamara fall for each other. Tom eventually helps the couple make off to Mexico or somewhere. Like I said, suspend your belief, all ye who enter here :-)
Tom plays his part to perfection, as the gruff, hardboiled, no-nonsense, sardonic military guy. I can't see anyone else better suited to this role. Watch out for a couple of hilarious scenes, when they land up at the marine detention center, and when they take a detour on their way back to base. Pretty funny 'camaraderie' too, with McNamara and a couple of sailor pinheads who want nothing more than to yank his chain.
Summary - with a couple of beers to help, what the heck, I think I actually enjoyed it!

This so-so romance is patently predictable. Will the good girl end up with the bad boy or the nice guy? The premise would have us believe that a sleazy, none-too-bright sportscaster (David Schwimmer) has fallen madly in love with a classy, intelligent book editor (Mili Avital). To test her loyalty, Schwimmer asks his best buddy (Jason Lee) to romance Avital. The likable aspects of this tired triangle concern the wraparound narration, featuring the ever-humorous Bonnie Hunt. She relates this complicated romance to rapt guests at a wedding. The marriage in question is between Avital and a supposed mystery man. The problem is that there is never much of a mystery. Or much of a romance. <I>--Rochelle O'Gorman</I>

Nice, relaxed, cute movie - recommended........2002-03-08
This movie is an excellent example of what I mean. Matthew Broderick plays a single guy sick of living with roommates, but unable to afford to move out on his own. He finds a happy medium at a rent-controlled apartment only available a few days per week, while the remaining days are distributed amoung two other tennants. Inevitably, the schedule gets mixed up, and the confusion that arises is the basis of this movie's plot.
All in all, it's not spectacularly wonderful or anything, but it's funny, captivating, and it's definately cute. I guess you could call it a "feel good movie" - if you did that sort of thing. But, I don't. Instead, I call it a "chick flick" ... one of the ones I'd not only watch, but buy my own copy of.

Passive Aggressive.......2007-01-02
Peculiar amalgam of other films.......2004-01-18
It's when the film progresses to the dynamics of the two men alone that it encounters serious problems. The interaction here is much too forced, contrived; there's a lot of treading water here, but the water is pseudo-water and the treading is thrashing about without a reason. After all, why thrash around in water that's not even water? Without giving away the plot points here, it's just not credible that the dominant one of this male pair would continue to accept the ministrations of the other man after a major problem arises. In addition, the dominant guy's treatment of the other man is much too crudely handled.
This obvious lack of credibility ruins the entire second half of the film whose ending would otherwise be very creepy. But because the events leading up to it really don't work, the ending suffers considerably. We just don't buy it.
Had the filmmaker thought through the interaction of the two men more carefully and plotted the film in this middle section more believably, this would have been a significantly stronger piece of work. As it is, it is a muddle whose three stars are for the strong first half and some definite creepiness in the ending section. In addition, any title that requires serious cogitation to understand (after which it is STILL not understood) is perhaps somewhat suspect.
