<I>Gray Matters</I> has one of the most adorable casts of any movie in recent years--the combined sweetness of Heather Graham (<I>Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me</I>), Bridget Moynahan (<I>Lord of War</I>), Molly Shannon (<I>Year of the Dog</I>), Thomas Cavanagh (<I>Ed</I>), Alan Cumming (<I>X-Men 2</I>), and Sissy Spacek (<I>Carrie</I>, <I>In the Bedroom</I>) narrowly avoids being diabetes-inducing. Gray (Graham) and her brother Sam (Cavanagh) have been best friends forever--so close that they find it hard to date. Gray pushes Sam into asking out Charlie (Moynahan), but when Sam and Charlie hit it off so well they spontaneously decide to get married, Gray finds herself unexpectedly dismayed... but not as dismayed as she is when, on a girls' night out before the ceremony, she and Charlie share a drunken kiss that sets Gray's body tingling. <I>Gray Matters</I> juggles a lot of emotional issues; the sibling interconnectedness problem doesn't flow smoothly into the coming-out story of the movie's second half. But sprinkled throughout are charming scenes and wonderfully deft moments that make the story's clumsy missteps all the more baffling. There's no question that Graham is a star who just can't seem to find the right vehicle; <I>Gray Matters</I> won't be her breakthrough, but it's further evidence of her significant appeal. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

The irresistible casting of John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale highlights this predictable romantic comedy, which combines the romantic yearning of <I>An Affair to Remember</I> and the New York charm of <I>You've Got Mail</I>. It all begins "a few years ago," when New Yorker Jonathan (Cusack) meets Brit beauty Sara (Beckinsale). They share a few perfect hours together before parting ways, leaving future encounters to her quirky obsession with fate. "A few years later," they're about to marry their respective fiancés (reluctantly, of course), and urgently hoping for destiny to bring them back together. Under the casual direction of Peter Chelsom (barely recovering from <I>Town & Country</I>), this starry-eyed romance offers no surprises, but it has a comforting familiarity, made warmer by the easy chemistry of the leads, with obligatory best-friend support by Molly Shannon and long-time Cusack pal Jeremy Piven. It's hokey, but die-hard romantics are sure to be forgiving. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

As paranoid cop Del Spooner, Will Smith (<I>Independence Day</I>, <I>Men in Black</I>) displays both his trademark quips and some impressive pectoral muscles in <I>I, Robot</I>. Only Spooner suspects that the robots that provide the near future with menial labor are going to turn on mankind--he's just not sure how. When a leading roboticist dies suspiciously, Spooner pursues a trail that may prove his suspicions. Don't expect much of a connection to Isaac Asimov's classic science fiction stories; <I>I, Robot</I>, the action movie, isn't prepared for any ruminations on the significance of artificial intelligence. This likable, efficient movie won't break any new ground, but it does have an idea or two to accompany its jolts and thrills, which puts it ahead of most recent action flicks. Also featuring Bridget Moynahan (<I>The Sum of All Fears</I>), Bruce Greenwood (<I>The Sweet Hereafter</I>), and James Cromwell (<I>Babe</I>, <I>LA Confidential</I>). <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

    Description

In the year 2035, technology and robots are a trusted part of everyday life. But that trust is broken when a scientist is found dead and a skeptical detective (Smith) believes that a robot is responsible. Bridget Moynahan co-stars in this high-tech action thriller that questions whether technology will ultimately lead to mankind's salvation . . . or annihilation.

    2 out of 5 stars The Fresh Prince vs. I Robot's. (Now it's on.).......2007-06-17

I recently had the opportunity to view the film I, Robot, or Short Circuit 3 as it has come to be known by the Ft. Collins cultural elite. Although this movie is set 30 years in the future, Detective Del Spooner's (Will Smith) jokes and witty antics keep with the times and never fail to elicit uproarious laughter. I guess phrases like "Oh, hell no" and "Now that's what I'm talkin' bout" are timeless comic masterpieces. Don't let the Fresh Prince's diction fool you, this movie pushes as many P.C. hot buttons as Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 and Mel Gibson's recent emotional masterpiece Lethal Weapon 4. I, Robot exemplifies a tried and true statement: when there are a lot of fancy robots in the future, all types of ill stuff will happen. Sure it's the same lesson we learned in The Terminator trilogy but let's face it, jokes and robots never really get old. The producers certainly did their homework in taking some ingredients from other popular sci-fi movies to complete their futuristic recipe for 100% action. A certain scene comes to mind when Will Smith must traverse a giant staircase, pure Ghostbusters. They might as well have suited him with a proton pack and warned him of the dire consequences that may arise by crossing the streams. I guess I can't argue with success. Does the film do its job? While I wasn't impressed very much -- and I am an avid fan of the Bad Boys films -- I have a good feeling that the younger crowd got the message loud and clear. As I was leaving the theater with a few friends, some teenagers in a futuristic looking Subaru yelled swear words at us and drove somewhat recklessly thereafter. (It should be noted that one of us looks strikingly similar to a robot.) They were obviously fired up by what they had just seen and had taken notes from a few of the car chase segments in the film. My fellow theater goers and I shook our heads and laughed: These kids today have no idea, one little fight and your mom may get scared, then you're moving with your auntsie and uncle to Bel-Air.

Grade C-, spend 7 dollars on one of those hats that make it look like there is an arrow through your head instead.

3 out of 5 stars Nice special effects, somewhat implausible plot.......2007-06-17

I was inherently suspicious of this film, having heard that only about five percent of it had anything whatever to do with Asimov's novel. Taking it on its own terms, though, it's really not a bad hour and fifty minutes of escapism. Will Smith plays Detective Spooner, a man with a bias against robots generally, even though he turns out to be partly bionic himself. The principal architect of the positronic robot revolution -- there's one for every five humans, now -- has apparently committed suicide but Spooner becomes convinced he was killed by one of the new generation of robots U.S.R. is about to release on the market. Asimov's Three Laws don't allow that, but (of course), a way has been found around that little problem. Aside from the fact that the laws even of Newtonian physics are ignored, and that Spooner's weapons seem to hold many thousands of bullets, the gymnastics of the big climatic scene are no more implausible than those in Star Wars. Nice CGI, too.

5 out of 5 stars Daring Racial Theme.......2007-05-01

I am not quite sure if everyone picked up the daring racial theme in this movie. The robots operate as a type of slave society on which humans rely, much like ancient Rome or America as a developing nation. Keep in mind that not only did the economy of the Old South depend on black slavery but Yankee trading firms greatly strengthened their capital base through the well-known "triangular trade", in which captured Africans would be transported across the Atlantic and sold at great profit.

So, here we are in the future with robots now the subject class. Will Smith plays the standard Black American action hero. However, instead of sympathizing with the robots, his character appears to be working out some sort of vendetta toward them -- and prejudice. Detective Spooner is right to suspect a robot uprising but his motives hardly seem pure.

At the end of the movie, we see that Detective Spooner's hostility toward the robots is not because they are different from him but because they are too similar. "I, Robot" rejects the standard movie sentimentality toward Black American males and holds its protagonist up to an unsparing moral judgment.

5 out of 5 stars More than meets the eye..........2007-04-29

I'm not a devotee of Will Smith/Asimov/Sci-fi nor a film buff, so there's no reason for me to prefer this kind of film, or bring any bias or preconceived baggage to watching it, and I rented it originally. However, I have to say this is a thoroughly absorbing, thought provoking and intelligent film which, for these reasons, kept me entertained right from the start - and isn't that the whole point? The film works on many levels, from an appreciation of the superb set design, CGI design and special effects (so good that they sometimes detract from the storyline as your chin hits the floor in amazement!), good dialogue, great action sequences, an excellent performance from Will Smith, and a central character that can draw out your sympathy and even steps it up as the film progresses, and is the real star of the whole show, having to face the ultimate choice each of us must make - choosing one's own destiny.

If you haven't seen it, I envy you. And yes, I have bought a copy. If you only watch it once, you'll miss so much.

4 out of 5 stars A good Will Smith movie.......2007-03-29

Will Smith shows a little more maturity in this one and is good as a robot-hating detective on a case that implicates a robot in a murder, something robots are not supposed to be able to do. Alan Tudyk's portrayal as Sonny, the robot with its own personality that can choose not to obey the three laws was really good. He really is the soul of the film.

I admire the fact that director Alex Proyas tried to blend a good science fiction story with a popcorn movie mentality, although it falls well short of being a classic because of that. Even the special effects, the fights, and the bots were all good. This is one of Smith's better movies (up there with Independence Day). The film works, but one wonders what could have been if Smith didn't always try for a laugh, or if they went for a darker feel. However, despite those problems, it was a fun film.

The lethal business of arms dealers provides an electrifying context for the black-as-coal humor of Andrew Niccol's Lord of War. Having proven his ingenuity as the writer of The Truman Show, and writer-director of Gattaca and the under-appreciated Simone, Niccol is clearly striving for Strangelovian relevance here as he chronicles the rise and inevitable fall of Yuri Orlov (Nicolas Cage), a Ukrainian immigrant to America who makes his fortune selling every kind of ordnance he can get his amoral hands on. With a trophy wife (Bridget Moynahan) who's initially clueless about his hidden career, and a younger brother (Jared Leto) whose drug-addled sense of decency makes him an ill-chosen accomplice, Yuri traffics in death the way other salesman might push vacuum cleaners (he likes to say that alcohol and tobacco are deadlier products than his), but even he can't deny the sheer ruthlessness of the Liberian dictator (a scene-stealing Eamonn Walker) who purchases Orlov's "products" to expand his oppressive regime. Niccol's themes are even bigger than Yuri's arms deals, and he drives them home with a blunt-force lack of subtlety, but Cage gives the film the kind of insanely dark humor it needs to have. To understand this monster named Yuri, we have to see at least a glimpse of his humanity, which Cage provides as only he can. Otherwise, this epic tale of gunrunnng would be as morally unbearable as the black market trade it illuminates. --Jeff Shannon

    Product Description

Based on actual events, this black comedy/drama stars Nicholas Cage as international arms smuggler Uri Orlov. The story follows Uri from his humble beginnings as a Soviet immigrant in 1970s Brooklyn and peaks with his involvement in selling off the stockpiled arsenal of post-Cold War Ukraine to--among other top clients--the sadistic African dictator Andr Baptiste, Sr. (Eamonn Walker). Jared Leto costars as Uri s little brother Vitaly, whose conscience and a burgeoning cocaine problem get in the way of business. Ethan Hawke is good as a sanctimonious Interpol agent with a vendetta against Uri, but the film's biggest dose of onscreen gravitas comes from Walker, whose Baptiste seethes with a heavy, serpent-like malevolence. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol, the film makes fine use of the brisk stream-of-consciousness narration style that Martin Scorcese brought to the true crime genre with GOODFELLAS (1992), and a near constant flow of action and classic rock songs that ensure a speedy, riveting ride through three decades of global carnage. Cage, who coproduced, lets his patented oddball magnetism slowly change polarity, until viewers realize they ve been led into a moral quagmire by falling for his self-delusory spiels about supply and demand, making this one of the bravest and most jet-black comedies of its decade.

2 out of 5 stars GREAT ACTING -----------------.......2007-06-20

Great Acting by all who were involved -------- subject matter - violent!
Language was offensive! Do these guys [and females] ever grow up and become more literate?
Sad to realize that this goes on in this world. Probably a great terrorist supplier.

Based on actual facts? More than likely true.
The content is something we would like to deny - the ending, probably happens all the time.
Hate the thought that some of our government officials are that corrupt.

I got the message but can't say that I enjoyed the movie - will not keep, what a waste.

    4 out of 5 stars nice .......2007-06-12

What I liked about this film is that in some ways, it was like a documentary. Nicolas Cage often gives monologues in films, probably because he's so good at them. In watching this film I got the impression that Nicolas Cage's character was real and what he expressed is actually what he felt. Nicolas Cage is most often cast as a troubled or conflicted character. In this film he was a little conflicted over being an international illegal arms dealer. Jared Leto played his drug addict brother who for a short time worked with him in smuggling arms to different countries.

Like most who work in jobs where what they do is at least a little questionable, he aways had a good come back argument to make himself feel better about what he's doing or rationalize it. "all my weapons have safety switches on them", "cars kill more people than fire arms", etc.

3 out of 5 stars INTERESTING, BUT A CROCK OF BULL****!.......2007-05-30

If you watch this movie taking this movie as it is intended to be taken a "black comedy" then you should enjoy it. Cage is great and the story is interesting. Some very cool visual effects are used in this good, but embellished story. Much better than I expected.

5 out of 5 stars Nicolas Cage at his best.......2007-05-03

This movie surfaces the subject of illegal arms dealing. Yuri Orlov, played brilliantly by Nicolas Cage, finds his one true talent and with the assistance of his brother he sets out to purchase and sell weapons of all sorts.

From the depth of Ukraine immigrant status, Yuri Orlov reaches the top of his trade, supplying weapons to anyone and everyone interested in making a deal.

The movie is simply amazing. The cynicism of the dialogue leaves us pondering on, as Mr. Orlov says, the fact that a decent, honest job is done by too many people, with very thin margins, and yet, there are large fortunes to be made selling every kind of weapons he can get his amoral hands on.

Since childhood, Mr. Orlov has been in love with a beautiful model and wherever he travels, as he sees the tabloids displaying her image, he focuses in someday possessing this "trophy wife" played by Bridget Moynahan.

At first, she is unaware of what he does for a living, and he convinces her that he is a millionaire in his own right, even though he has rented the plane he uses to take her away from a hotel where he had lured her under the disguise of photo opportunity.

Orlov's brother, played by Jared Leto, helps him to achieve his goals, but he is disturbed about the consequences of the trade they are in. As he sees countless victims die under the fire of the very weapons they sell, he finds refuge in his cocaine drug addiction, to mask the fact that he is an accomplice.

Yuri's cynicism is brilliantly played by Nicholas Cage, as he traffics in the death of thousands, the way other salesman might push vitamins or something good for humanity.

Some of the very cynical statements are left for the audience to ponder on the fact that "automobiles, alcohol and tobacco kill more people than weapons of all sorts."

Yuri Orlov travels all over the world, visiting a ruthless Liberian dictator, played by Eamonn Walker, who acquires weapons to eliminate any citizen who opposes his oppressive regime. The son is riveted in obtaining Rambo's weapon and even this, Yuri Orlov is able to acquire for him.

In the end... when Yuri is put in jail, as he discusses his life with the man who has been after him throughout the film, he says... "My parents disowned me, my wife and child have left me... members of my family are dead... yes... I understand my situation." The reply is priceless... for the persecutor says... "I would send you to hell, but you already live there!"

While incredible dark humor is at play with this movie, I would highly recommend this film, for it surfaces the dangers of the arms race, and the high price we pay as nations continue to build arsenals of destruction.

4 out of 5 stars Polemic against the arms trade.......2007-04-01

One of the adverts at the start of the version of this DVD which I watched was placed by a campaign against the arms trade. The advert took the form of a spoof TV advert for weapons. It's difficult to see what the people who paid for this advert thought they were adding to what is already on the disc; essentially the film itself is a much longer and more sophisticated version of the same point.

Nicolas Cage plays the central character and narrator Yuri Orlov, who was born in what is now the Ukraine and emigrated from the former Soviet Union with his parents. He becomes an international arms dealer. Obviously damaged inside by the human consequences of his trade, Orlov tries to deal with them by distancing himself from the actions of his customers and avoiding crimes other than gun-running. When a Columbian drug baron wants to pay him in cocaine rather than money, Orlov protests "I'm am arms trader, not a drug dealer." At one point one of his customers tries to "reward" Orlov by providing on a plate the opportunity to take revenge on a rival arms dealer who had murdered Yuri Orlov's uncle. Although he had been close to his uncle and upset by that murder Orlov does not want to pull the trigger himself to kill the man responsible even under duress.

Cage is one of very few actors who could bring off the studied understatement and ironic black humour required of the central character and narrator to make this film work. You are never quite sure what exactly is going on inside Orlov's head. When he sees Gorbachov on TV announcing the end of the cold war, Yuri is so delighted that he barely hears his wife Eva (Bridget Moynahan) saying that their baby son is walking for the first time; but you are unclear whether he is so pleased because he cares about the country of his birth or because this will mean more opportunties for gun running.

Most viewers will be clear that for all Orlov's wealth they would not want to change places with him: at one point Interpol agent Jack Valentine (Ethan Hawke) who is the nearest thing the film has to a hero says to him "I'd tell you to go to Hell - but I think you're already there."

Strong performance from a number of other cast members. Jared Leto is Yuri's brother and sidekick Vitaly Orlov who has even more trouble dealing with guilt about what they do; Bridget Moynahan gives a sterling performance as the trophy wife who is deeply disturbed to learn where the wealth which supports her comfortable life comes from.

Eamonn Walker gives a chilling performance as Orlov's most lucrative and dangerous customer, President Andre Baptiste of Liberia. This character appears to be based on former Liberian President Charles Taylor, who is currently awaiting trial on War Crimes charges before the Hague tribunal.

Ethan Hawke plays an idealistic Interpol agent who will do almost anything, except break the law himself, to stop gun-runners like Orlov.

If you have seen the trailer for this, be warned that, like that for Cage's recent film "The Weather Guy" it shows quite a bit of black humour in the film which is laugh out loud funny out of context (e.g. in the trailer) but is not so amusing in context.

As an edgy thriller or a story of moral destruction this film works. AS a political polemic, a number of the points it makes are direct hits but it is easy to pick holes in and rather one-sided, especially at the end where the film suggests all government supplies of arms are morally equivalent to traders like Orlov.

Some government supplies of arms may be on that level, but without an arms industry and supply of weapons we would have had nothing with which to fight evils such as the Nazis. With no arms industry, those of us who have no Jewish blood would have to ask "How High?" whenever a fascist Gauleiter said "Jump!" and those who do have Jewish ancestry would not be alive.

For fans of Nicolas Cage this is possibly the best performance of his career. Worth watching if you want to see a dramatic portrait of material success and moral decline. Not a good film to watch if you want a piece of light entertainment or cheering up.

It's not easy replacing Harrison Ford as a beloved screen hero, but Ben Affleck brings fresh vitality to <I>The Sum of All Fears</I>, reviving Paramount's Tom Clancy franchise in the role Ford made famous. As CIA agent Jack Ryan, Affleck is a rookie in the covert ranks, unraveling a plot that lures Russian and American superpowers into a nuclear standoff, while a neofascist faction turns most of Baltimore into an atomic wasteland and holds the world in the grip of a terrorist nightmare. Affleck combines sharp intelligence with a new-guy's perspective, while a senior agent (Morgan Freeman) passes the torch of back-channel authority. The result is one of the best Clancy films to date, ably helmed by Phil Alden Robinson (whose comic thriller <I>Sneakers</I> was sorely underrated) with a stellar supporting cast, and adapted with abundant humor, humanity, and thrills by <I>Donnie Brasco</I> screenwriter Paul Attanasio and cowriter Daniel Pyne. Even the typically reticent Clancy would approve. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars The Sum of All Fears (Special Collector's Edition)..........2007-06-02

This is a good movie that invites one to think. The acting was very good. Morgan Freeman again, is outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars terrorism and wmd brought to the big screen.......2007-04-03

Great video with all star cast that shows the realities that face us here in america. A terrorist mastermind wants to drag the U.S. and Russia into WW3 and uses a smuggled nuclear device to do it. The only thing i would have done differently, is to have used Islamic terrorists to make it more lifelike.

    2 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointing!.......2007-02-14

Tom Clancy's "Sum Of All Fears" is a 900 page thriller - complex, highly detailed and smart. A mini-series would be necessary to preserve the integrity of the story, but alas it was squashed into two hours for the theater. Large parts of the story were completely discarded and what remains has been compressed to the point of being barely recognizable. What makes the book so interesting is the premise that the US and Russian governments could be manipulated by clever terrorists, and in spite of all safeguards the world could be brought to the brink of nuclear war. The movie shows us the escalating danger, but without the insights. Be afraid, be very afraid!

While I can understand the problem of creating a coherent screenplay I cannot understand the characterization of Jack Ryan (played by Ben Affleck). Jack Ryan (as portrayed by Tom Clancy) is not just a guy who runs with guns. He is smart, thoughtful, and highly articulate. He is the Deputy Director of the CIA and an advisor to the President! Yet in this film he says things like "I really don't believe the Russian leader would act that way, Sir." Apparently we are supposed to believe that Jack Ryan saves the day because he can walk away from helicopter crashes, and because he's really, really sincere.

Still, on the plus side the film is nice to look at, moves at a fast pace, has a few well done special effects, and some decent acting (notably Morgan Freeman). The ride can be enjoyable if you don't think about it, so I give it two stars. Regardless of how you feel about this film I say read the book. You won't believe how much more there is to this story.

A Movie that will make you wonder if it could be true. It made you wonder what would happen next or if they would be able to stop it in time and did not come with the normal hollywood happy ending that we all wait for. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes a good action movie.

As a producer, Jerry Bruckheimer makes movies for guys, mostly action films like <I>Top Gun</I> and <I>Gone in 60 Seconds</I>. The ones he makes that feature women, such as <I>Flashdance</I> and now <I>Coyote Ugly</I>, broaden their appeal with a fondness for "strong women." For Bruckheimer, that means self-determined, attractive women who don't need men to get what they want. Is there anything sexier than that? In <I>Coyote Ugly</I>, the charming young waif Piper Perabo stars as Violet, a New Jersey waitress who moves to New York to make it big as a songwriter. She has absolutely no idea how the music business works, relying instead on her faith in her own abilities. In order to make ends meet, she gets a job in a bar called Coyote Ugly, where the bartenders are scantily clad women who dance on the bar and order around their mostly male clientele. Really, they are strippers who don't have to take off their clothes. In fact, the owner (Maria Bello) orders them to enact the first rule of strip clubs: "Appear available but never be available." Bruckheimer is smart enough to focus on the naive girl instead of the seamier side of the story, following her as she realizes her dream and picks up a disposable but nice man along the way. Further "empowering" the female figures in the film, Zoe (Tyra Banks), the bartender whom Violet is replacing, leaves in order to go to law school. See? They're as smart as they are sexy! Then there's John Goodman, who turns in an absolutely charming performance as Violet's concerned father. This is a sweet and inoffensive film as long as you don't think too much about it. <I>--Andy Spletzer</I>

Guys are autioned off. Funny movie!

4 out of 5 stars love it or hate it.......2007-02-06

This film is a must-see. With gorgeous women for the lads, and an upbeat girl-power can-do message for the girls, you cannot fail to enjoy this movie.

A pumping soundtrack and brilliant choreography make you want to start dancing on the Coyote Ugly bar with the stars. Unknown Piper Perabo is obviously destined for great things (think younger Sarah Jessica Parker) and Adam Garcia is well sexy as the prime australian rib she auctions off. Tyra Banks makes an appearance and Maria Bello gets her arguably most important role to date.

The message behind this movie goes something like: "life may suck at times, but it can be fun if it sucks with the right people". This is the film for all the underpaid, under-appreciated gophers of society. We do what we have to to get by and Coyote Ugly shows that all of us can make it.

4 out of 5 stars Coyote Ugly (Unrated Special Edition).......2007-01-21

Just a warning that the unrated version includes nudity and a sex scene not shown on the rated release. So don't buy it for a kid who loves the music and dancing. The adults, on the other hand, will be happy.

1 out of 5 stars Fluffy, contrived crud........2006-11-20

I'm not sure which is worse- the concept of the bar "Coyote Ugly." or the movie about it. I suppose both. A lot is made about Piper Parabo's performance, as it were. But I just don't see it. I mean, you'd have to be able to act to receive such an accolade. And in this movie, Parabo is a strident, sell a little T and A as far as one can w/o becoming a stripper, with as much a grasp on the real world as 3rd grader. The movie is a toy for high school/college age mopes who find places where the worst kept secret in the bar business- hiring hotties to sucker young, naiive men into spending money they can't afford- interesting places to hang out at. This is "Cocktail" in reverse, to an extent. This is one of those movies that creates a non-existing, pure utopia of a bar. The place where everyone basically laughs, cheers and sings in unison at a contrived, silly atmosphere that only exists in the minds of Hollywood execs, and college campuses to a much lesser extent. The dialogue to is equal to that of "Coctail"- pointless, been there before, dense dialogue. If you're young and have yet to be in touch with real life, see this. It's a fantasy flick for escapism. If you're a quality film lover, run the other way!

3 out of 5 stars Something for the girls, something for the guys.......2006-07-25

You don't often get movies with typical "chick flick" plots that also pander to guys with hot girls strutting around showing off their body. Coyote Ugly does it, and does a decent job of pulling it off. It's not a great film, but it's worth a viewing with your boy/girlfriend, whatever the case may be. The unrated version unfortunately spoils the balance a bit by throwing in bits of nudity. Do you really want that in a sugary date flick? Probably not. Stick to the theatrical cut, and you might find yourself humming "Can't Fight the Moonlight" as well.

"Nothing is as it seems" in <I>The Recruit</I>, a guessing-game thriller that employs plot twists and conflicting loyalties as its primary raison d'être. Surrounded by potential deception, a newly recruited CIA officer (Colin Farrell) must determine if his manipulative instructor (Al Pacino) is being honest when he identifies Farrell's fellow recruit and love interest (Bridget Moynihan) as an enemy "mole" assigned to steal a dangerous computer virus from CIA headquarters. While claiming to offer an insider's look at CIA training methods, this engrossing yet ultimately predictable plot is pure Hollywood fantasy; any resemblance to reality is purely coincidental, leaving the perpetually unshaven and scruffily coiffed Farrell to fend for himself in Pacino's cynical arena while tracing his familial roots in the spy game. Wearing its cleverness on its sleeve, <I>The Recruit</I> is an adequately elaborate puzzle of perceptions. "Everything is a test," as Farrell soon realizes, and attentive viewers will enjoy piecing it all together. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

    Description

Academy Award(R)-Winner Al Pacino (Best Actor, SCENT OF A WOMAN, 1991) and Colin Farrell (MINORITY REPORT) take you deeper into the CIA than you've ever been before in this action-packed psychological thriller. James Clayton (Farrell), one of the smartest graduates in the country, is just the person Walter Burke (Pacino) wants in the Agency. James quickly rises through the ranks and falls for Layla (Bridget Moynahan, THE SUM OF ALL FEARS), one of his fellow recruits. But just when James starts to question his role and his cat-and-mouse relationship with his mentor, Burke taps him to root out a mole. As the suspense builds in a maze of gripping twists and turns, there are only two things James can count on -- he can't trust anyone and nothing is as it seems. It's the ultimate CIA thriller with so many surprise plot twists, you'll want to watch it again and again.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent..........2007-03-21

Great movie. Although its a type of movie that you really have to pay attention to or else you will be completely lost in the last scenes it is still a great one.

So story is about this man James(Farrell) who has tried to find out the exact cause of his father's death. A CIA man Burke (Pacino) recruits him to join the training for the CIA. Jaymes overcomes all of the obstacles he faces, being the star of the training. The tables begin to turn as he is faced with dissmissal from training and assigned to a case dealing with a woman he is involved with. Towards the end, he finds that nothing is what it seems when he has an interesting encounter with Burke.

Good acting. Pacino and Farrell do a great job. Good directing. However, like i said, the beginning is very self-explanatory but then towards the middle and especially the end you really have to be paying attention because you get lost very easily.

Recommended, its a good movie but a little complicated at the end.

    4 out of 5 stars nice actors.......2007-01-26

Every review I read says this is a bad film, a disappointing film, a mediocre film, a predictable film. Hey maybe I'm stupid, but I think this film is excellent and one of the most unpredictable films I've seen in my life. I think the acting is superb. I think the script suits. I think the two halves of the film fit perfectly and give this film it's originality. I think this is a good film.

However it's not excellent as very few films are excellent. But I'd definitely buy this DVD if I saw it in a shop. It all appears rather believable to me, even in the tests, and I was on the edge of my seat a few times too.

Personally don't listen to other reviews, or at least give judgment yourself.

    The Recruit, 2003 film

The opening shows a bartender who talks to a customer who shows a magic trick. "Things are not what they seem." The customer asks the bartender to join a secret government agency as a recruit. They will learn the skills of deception, assault and defense, military practices, etc. to become a secret agent, spy and saboteur. Terrorism? The first test comes in a bar where they are tried. Then there is an appraisal session that tests a friendship. The training continues. While on a shadowing exercise James is kidnapped and tortured while imprisoned. The #1 lesson is: Do Not Get Caught! This causes his dismissal from the training program. But there is a trick in all this: James Clayton will become an undercover operative while working as a clerk. The surprise is learning who is the target!

We see James at work delivering mail, and also logging into the target's computer. [There are easier ways to do this.] James discovers the secret information is on Leila's home computer. How did it get there? James chases a contact, shots are exchanged, and James wins. [Could this happen in a train station in Washington DC?] The drama continues when he meets Leila and learns her story. Then he meets with his contact Walter Burke. There is a surprise ending. But we were warned that things are not what they seem. They tracked James because his cell phone was turned on!

4 out of 5 stars Better than average movie.......2006-08-14

Al Pacino plays a CIA agent who recruits James Clayton (Colin Farrell) because he's a highly intelligent prospect. Also, Clayton's father was in the CIA. Clayton falls in love with Layla. She is another candidate he meets while in training. She is supposedly a mole try to access information and Clayton is assigned to follow her.

I thought this was a highly entertaining movie and I had fun trying to figure out what was going to happen next. Anyone who likes spy movies or thrillers will more than likely enjoy this film.

Taking a cue from Memento, Unknown uses flashbacks to tell its story, which is full of intrigue. A group of seemingly unrelated men (played by Greg Kinnear, Joe Pantoliano, Jim Caviezel, Berry Pepper, and Jeremy Sisto) find themselves in an abandoned warehouse, and each one claims he is suffering from amnesia. Somehow, they had been involved in a kidnapping plot, but when they come to, the men have no clue which of them are the perpetrators and which are the victims. The film has the makings of a convincing thriller, but where it fails is in its attempt to be overly clever. For a suspense story to work, the filmmaker has to be willing to divulge a few clues along the way. (For instance, how did the men all lose their memories at the same time?) The problem is that Matthew Waynee's script is long on words, but short on meaning, leaving the viewer impatient and frustrated long before the film fades to black. --Jae-Ha Kim

    Description

Academy Award® nominee Greg Kinnear (Best Supporting Actor, As Good As It Gets, 1997; The Matador) and James Caveizel (The Passion Of The Christ) light up the screen in this riveting psychological thriller that delivers nerve-jarring suspense like The Usual Suspects and Memento. Five strangers wake up in a locked warehouse with no memory of who they are or how they got there. Now they are forced on a journey together to discover who is good -- and who is evil -- in order to stay alive. Watch in real time as facts are revealed, the unknown becomes known...and this stunningly unpredictable motion picture leads you down a path of twists and turns that may uncover the truth. Also starring Joe Pantoliano (HBO's The Sopranos), Bridget Moynaghan (I, Robot), Jeremy Sisto (HBO's Six Feet Under) and Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan).

4 out of 5 stars The Safety and Threat and Challenge of Memory Loss.......2007-05-16

Director Simon Brand and writer Matthew Waynee are relative newcomers to the art of filmmaking and if UNKNOWN is a fair example of their capabilities, they should have promising futures. The script is clever, just obtuse enough to engage thinking on the part of the viewer, and the story is told in a manner that enhances the tension and the credibility.

After compatibly bleak credits the story opens in a cement room/rooms where the bodies of five men are strewn about, each either unconscious or possibly dead. The first to rise is Jim Caviezel, battered and without memory of his identity or the situation in which he finds himself. He sees the bodies of four other men and each 'wakes up' gradually - Greg Kinnear, Joe Pantoliano, Barry Pepper, and Jeremy Sisto. Aside form the fact that everyone has lost his memory there is the fact that they are all hurt and trapped inside the room. The isolation and claustrophobia takes its toll and the men each wonder who is a good guy and who is a bad guy as each tries to recall how they arrived in this terrifying situation. Interplaying with the distraught minds of the five prisoners are moments when the film throws us outside the room into the world of either criminals or detectives and a mysterious woman who is handling a bag of money. Some words about a methamphetamine lab are uttered, some telephone calls are made to the single line inside 'the room', and the identities of each of the characters takes shape as each of the imprisoned men gains bits of memory. The five trapped men form a strange bond, ready for the return of whoever it is that placed them there, and it is only after the confrontation of the captors with the captives occurs that all of the pieces of the bizarre story are sorted out. The viewer then needs to do some mental backing up to completely understand the story.

The cast is very strong - not only the five solid actors within the room, but also those 'outside', including Bridget Moynahan, Peter Stormare, Chris Mulkey, Clayne Crawford, Kevin Chapman, Mark Boone, Wilmer Calderon, and David Selby. But it is the choices made by director Simon Brand that make the story unique (given it has the flavor of 'Memento', Sartre's 'No Exit', 'Reservoir Dogs', 'The Usual Suspects' and others). This a fine examination of human behavior when the aspect of loss of memory impacts how 'strangers' interact to survive. Grady Harp, May 07

2 out of 5 stars unknown and clueless like one of the hostages.......2007-05-15

a ridiculous screenplay tried so hard to throw the clueless and unknown desperate kidnapped and hostage situation to the viewers. other than pretentious scenario and plot, this foolish film was full of holes. you'd feel like one of the hostage, clueless but not cared too much like watching a bunch of actors to play out a self-righteous but totally impossible story. there's no way to explain lot of whys in the first place; why shifting suspicion so easily to one another? why kept tying up the older guy and freed the others? why they accepted any explanation so easily? why...? why...? the desperate situation just looked so phony and so staged just because of a ridiculous screenplay simply took you for granted to accept all the whys, whats and hows by throwing you a curve ball you never knew where it'd land or even you knew, they just don't care and couldn't care less.

4 out of 5 stars Unknown should be known.......2007-04-13

I'm glad I picked this up for a Rental. It is now on my "to buy" list. I thought it was a great movie. The script could have been a bit more tight and thoughtful, but overall pretty good. It has some of my favorite actors in it. It is original, good story. It would be one I would watch again and think about philosophically. Is man or woman essentially good or bad? What makes a man evil?

There is no easy answers in life or in this movie.

4 out of 5 stars Hello! My Name Is _________________.......2007-04-12

Amnesia is a tough act to sell. Proven fickle in doctor's offices, unpinnable in medical textbooks, and about as comprehensible as the consciousness it attacks, Memory Loss is a device that can propel a story (see Memento or Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind) as much as it can cause it to stall (see 50 First Dates or Paycheck).

When its used as a gimmick, as a way to surgically graft suspense and intrigue into a script that would otherwise have none, it usually fails. But when it is a real part of the character, when it illuminates ideas explored by the entire storyline, it can prove useful.

"Unknown" falls somewhere between the two. The movie goes whole hog with its amnesia: five men wake up, locked in a warehouse, all of them suffering from gaps in the mind, apparantly caused by the leaking of some toxic chemicals. They are beaten, broken, bruised, shot, and -- in two cases -- chained and bound. After a bit of sleuthing, they realize that three of them are kidnappers, and the other two are their victims, but no one has any idea which is which.

To make matters worse, the three kidnappers at the warehouse are only part of a larger group. Through phone calls they learn that the other half of their team is soon to return, ransom money in hand (and -- unknowingly -- cops on their tails). The infrequent jumps to these moments -- at the drop-off point, trailing the bad guys, detectives consoling distraught wives -- are necessary, but they staunch some of the suspense that the central story tries so hard to set up.

The script tries to take things all across the board, using the whole gamut of emotions (and some clever, if not repetitive, dialogue) to show off its idea of the tabula rasa in all men. Without pasts, without memories, who is ANYBODY? What makes a bad guy bad and vice versa? Or are such labels meaningless? It's all too profound.

Okay, it's not TOO profound, although it gets pretty labored there near the end, when realizations start to creep back into the gassed men's heads and they come to terms, in their own ways, with who they used to be, and who they believe they are now. And as these memories tumble back with an ever-increasing rhythm, the story just as quickly crumbles, twists and double-crosses and surprises piling out and on top of each other so rapidly they become mostly pointless.

In spite of the over-eager excess of the story (the director and screenwriter are both relative newbies), the cast -- James Caviezel, Greg Kinnear, Bridget Moynahan, Joe Pantoliano, Barry Pepper, Jeremy Sisto, Peter Stormare -- do a bang-up job. This array of excellent performers works hard to smooth out the places where the story wears thin or clumps up with cliche, and they work even better in this ensemble environment. The story may stall on its own flooded plot engine, but the actors and actresses keep pushing it along at a pretty steady clip. Impressive turn-out all around, even if the end product is, well, rather forgettable.
