For anyone who thought the Oscar-winning documentary <I>March of the Penguins</I> was the most marvelous cinematic moment for these nomads of the south, you haven't seen nothing yet. <I>Happy Feet</I> is an animated wonder about a penguin named Mumble who can't sing, but can dance up a storm. George Miller, the driving force behind the <I>Babe</I> (and <I>Mad Max</I>) movies, takes another creative step in family entertainment with this big, beautiful, music-fueled film that will have kids and their parents dancing in the streets. From his first moment alive, Mumble (voiced Elijah Woods) feels the beat and can't stop dancing. Unfortunately, emperor penguins are all about finding their own heart song, and the dancing youngster--as cute as he is--is a misfit. Luckily, he bumps into little blue penguins and a Spanish-infused group (led by Robin Williams) and begins a series of adventures. Miller has an exceptional variety of entertainment: Busby Berkley musical numbers, amusement-park thrills, exciting chase sequences (seals and orca lovers might like think otherwise), and even an environmental message that doesn't weigh you down. Best of all, you don't know where the movie is going in the last act, a rare occurrence these days in family entertainment. A fusion of rock songs, mashed-up and otherwise, are featured; this movie is as much a musical as a comedy. Mumble's solo dance to a new version of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" by Fantasia, Patti, and Yolanda may be the most joyful moment on camera in 2006. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>
<b>On the DVD</b>
There are two new animated sequences, which aren't incorporated into the film. One's a half-minute hackysack-themed bit, but the other is a good-looking, two-minute scene featuring the late Steve Irwin as an albatross, who, with Mumble, encounters a blue whale. "Dance Like a Penguin: Stomp to the Beat" is hosted by Savion Glover, whose dancing was motion-captured for the film, but other than a couple basic tips, it's pretty much a demonstration rather than a lesson. In addition to the two music videos (Gia's "Hit Me Up" and Prince's "The Song of the Heart"), "I Love to Singa" is an appropriately matched 1936 Merrie Melodies cartoon in which a young owl ruffles feathers by wanting to sing jazz for his classical-music-loving family. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

Description
In the great nation of Emperor Penguins, deep in Antarctica, you're nobody unless you can sing - which is unfortunate for Mumble (ELIJAH WOOD), who is the worst singer in the world. He is born dancing to his own tune...tap dancing. As fate would have it, his one friend, Gloria (BRITTANY MURPHY), happens to be the best singer around. Mumble and Gloria have a connection from the moment they hatch, but she struggles with his strange "hippity- hoppity" ways. Away from home for the first time, Mumble meets a posse of decidedly un-Emperor-like penguins - the Adelie Amigos. Led by Ramon (ROBIN WILLIAMS), the Adelies instantly embrace Mumble's cool dance moves and invite him to party with them. In Adelie Land, Mumble seeks the counsel of Lovelace the Guru (also voiced by ROBIN WILLIAMS), a crazy-feathered Rockhopper penguin who will answer any of life's questions for the price of a pebble. Together with Lovelace and the Amigos, Mumble sets out across vast landscapes and, after some epic encounters, proves that by being true to yourself, you can make all the difference in the world.

Shouldn't Have Won Best Animated Feature.......2007-06-23
First of all, I bought this movie when it came out on dvd since I didn't have the time to see it in the theater. Now I wish I had because I could have saved myself a few dollars. I'm an animation student and what I saw disappointed me in more than one way. Okay, the message was WAY too obvious and disjointed. "We'll save the penguins because, hey, they can tap dance." Would any action have been done at all, if the penguins COULDN'T tap dance? Like I said, inconsistent. As for the character design, good for realistic quality. The biggest disgrace there was the four amigos. Now, I love Robin Williams, but the character designers did NOT give his character anywhere close to the kind of character he should have had. The four amigos looked like they had white felt circles glued on their faces. The main reason this movie got the Best Animated Feature award was because of the environmental message, not for story and not for quality. Also, most likely because Steve Irwin had a part. That I can TOTALLY understand because I have GREAT respect for him as I'm sure a lot of us do. This isn't a bash of the movie, I'm just stating my viewpoint as an animation fan and student. I hope this doesn't offend anyone but as I said, it's just my opinion.
Happy Feet.......2007-06-22
Great, awesome, cute, really cute and foot stomping good time watching this movie. The animals are the cutest and most adorable little darlings. I especially like the dancing. Am nuts about Robin Williams! Great movie!

Visually stunning musical tale for more grown-up kids.......2007-06-18
George Miller's animated film, "Happy Feet," is a visual wonder and accomplishes the same feat as Baz Luhrman's "Moulin Rouge," by deftly weaving popular songs into the plot of the movie. But please note, the title and the fact that the movie features beyond-cute penguins belie the fact that this is a more grown-up cartoon that earns its PG rating - this is not G-rated family fare for kiddies of all ages.
"HF" focuses on emperor penguins, and Miller pays an obvious tribute to "March of the Penguins" in the opening scenes. Memphis (Hugh Jackman) falls in love with Norma Jean (Nicole Kidman) and they have an egg. Norma Jean then heads off for the fishing grounds, leaving Memphis with the egg through the long cold winter night - a scene that the movie creates with dazzling artistry. Tragedy nearly strikes when Memphis drops his egg for a few seconds - anyone who has seen "March" knows that a few instants can be fatal. Memphis is gravely worried that his instant of inattention has cost his family dear.
But all appears well when Mumble (Elijah Wood) hatches . . . but then he starts tap-dancing. Memphis tries to help Mumble hide this odd quirk (penguins are a rigid society), but everything comes clear when Mumble proves that he absolutely cannot sing. This is a big sin in emperor penguin land, as every emperor penguin has a "heart song," and without it, you can never find a mate. Mumble can't sing, but he can dance like Savion Glover (who provides the dancing). Still, Gloria (Brittany Murphy), the best-singing penguin Mumble's age, won't have him because he can't sing, and Mumble is ostracized.
What follows is a wild ramble for Mumble. He encounters dangerous leopard seals and meets new friends, some Latino penguins who aren't so hung-up on singing. Ultimately, Mumble learns that the fishing problems plaguing the penguins (the fish are mysteriously disappearing) are not blamed on the penguins' lack of devotion to their ways, but the depredations of aliens (i.e., man). So what begins as a musical romp turns into a powerful environmental message-film.
And powerful it is. I first saw "HF" with my four-year old daughter in the Omnimax format, and many adults were shedding tears by the end of the movie. This is serious stuff, but I have to admit that my daughter was also riveted by the movie despite its near two-hour length.
Look for more mature humor - this is more like "Shrek" than "Toy Story."
All in all, "HF" is one of the best animated films to come out in recent years, and that's saying something as we are seeing more and more animated movies than ever before. It's a little dark for some kids, so you should probably watch it with your kids the first time to make sure that it's OK. But the good news is that you will enjoy Mumble's journey and probably have some explaining to do with your kids about man's siphoning of the penguin's fish. An excellent film.
Happy Feet : Why Bother?.......2007-06-17
Even though I should get right to the point, I feel compelled to share my history with this stupid and stand out mediocre movie called Happy Feet.
When the first trailer appeared, I nearly fell asleep from the boredom. Three minutes of a dancing penguin seemed like HOURS in the 3-D theater. I was about to scream, "I just want to see the ocean documentary!" at the screen when the real movie actually started. Henceforth, I was prone against Happy Feet and anything having to do with it. While my classmates, even some of my closest friends were going nutso crazy over the 'adowable dwancing pengwuins' I was just trying to imagine how horrible it could be. When the movie finally came out, I turned down several invitations to go to the cinema with my friends to see hippity hoppity penguins dance for a length of time even more torterous than the commerical!
Then, in April, I was on a flight to Hawaii and there were DVD screens on the backs of the seats in front of you that you could watch movies and TV shows on. I was bored, as it was a very lengthy flight, so I decided to rate Happy Feet as I watched it.
I actually thought that it would be better than what it was.
From each cheesy scene to the next, I groaned and wondered, "Why on Earth would any sane actor or actress attach themselves to this movie?" I still fail to see why. My first problem with it was the opening scene.
The opening scene was very very...well, to put it bluntly, DUMB. Norma Jean was prancin' around and waddling in the most absurd fashion while singing in this stupid little high-pitched voice that makes her sound like she's on helium. And Memphis was like the country hick and decided one day to impersonate Elvis! What a great pair. I would describe them as Dumb and Dumber, but they are both DumbEST, so that wouldn't work.
The 'cutesy' part of the film is dragged down, with only two big dance scenes, both the equivilent of what any tap student could do, only the student would be fifty times better. Even with those few dance numbers, Mumble's whole part of "being left out" doesn't even come across as a major part in the story! The tap dancing is underplayed and forgotten. They should have named the movie "Let's Stone the Aliens!" Let's see how THAT would go with moviegoers and young children.
The whole 'aliens are stealing our fish!' thing is old and much to OVERplayed. Little kids, which is mainly the direct group that this movie is aimed at, won't get the whole 'global warming is bad' thing. I mean come on!
One thing that I DO like in Happy Feet is the backgrounds. They're pretty good, but the animation of the characters themselves is lacking a lot. One problem is the beaks and the eyes. When any of the characters are singing, it looks like their once sturdy beaks have turned into flopping skin. Mumble always looks happy and smiling, even it's supposed to be a gut-wrenching scene.
At the end of the school year, we watched Happy Feet and I groaned. I was telling two of my friends, who are twins, how bad it was, and they were saying, "It'll be better than you say it is!" Once the first scene started, one of the twins looked over at me with her mouth dropped in awe of the stupidity. They both hated the entire movie. As do I.
This movie is also too scary for the target audience of 2-6 year olds. The movie reviewer on my local radio station said that children were being taken out of the theater screaming and crying when the leopard seal tries to kill Mumble. (The twins and I were cheering for the orcas to catch Mumble, but sadly...they didn't. Sniff sniff...)
All in all, Happy Feet is NOT happy, and is certainly a very dull and very dumb movie that should NOT be watched. And to even IMAGINE that it could be nominated for the Academy Award...and it won! I nearly fainted! At that point, I was rooting for Cars, another film that I don't like but hey! Pixar deserves a nice trophy more than the Happy Feet creators! Compare this to the very boring movie March of the Penguins, add some cheap dance moves, and throw in one bloodthirsty leopard seal and you've got yourself a fresh Happy Feet Smoothie, ready to go.
Sincerely,
~Dapplewing~

Brutal and breathtaking, Sin City is Robert Rodriguez's stunningly realized vision of Frank Miller's pulpy comic books. In the first of three separate but loosely related stories, Marv (Mickey Rourke in heavy makeup) tries to track down the killers of a woman who ended up dead in his bed. In the second story, Dwight's (Clive Owen) attempt to defend a woman from a brutal abuser goes horribly wrong, and threatens to destroy the uneasy truce among the police, the mob, and the women of Old Town. Finally, an aging cop on his last day on the job (Bruce Willis) rescues a young girl from a kidnapper, but is himself thrown in jail. Years later, he has a chance to save her again.
<table align=left cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" > <tr><td align="center"> <img src="http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/01/books/Comics/robandmiller.gif" border=0 align=top>
<span class="tiny">Read our interview with Frank Miller. </span> </td></tr> </table> Based on three of Miller's immensely popular and immensely gritty books (The Hard Goodbye, The Big Fat Kill, and That Yellow Bastard), Sin City is unquestionably the most faithful comic-book-based movie ever made. Each shot looks like a panel from its source material, and director Rodriguez (who refers to it as a "translation" rather than an adaptation) resigned from the Directors Guild so that Miller could share a directing credit. Like the books, it's almost entirely in stark black and white with some occasional bursts of color (a woman's red lips, a villain's yellow face). The backgrounds are entirely digitally generated, yet not self-consciously so, and perfectly capture Miller's gritty cityscape. And though most of Miller's copious nudity is absent, the violence is unrelentingly present. That may be the biggest obstacle to viewers who aren't already fans of the books and who may have been turned off by Kill Bill (whose director, Quentin Tarantino, helmed one scene of Sin City). In addition, it's a bleak, desperate world in which the heroes are killers, corruption rules, and the women are almost all prostitutes or strippers. But Miller's stories are riveting, and the huge cast--which also includes Jessica Alba, Jaime King, Brittany Murphy, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Elijah Wood, Nick Stahl, Michael Clarke Duncan, Devin Aoki, Carla Gugino, and Josh Hartnett--is just about perfect. (Only Bruce Willis and Michael Madsen, while very well-suited to their roles, seem hard to separate from their established screen personas.) In what Rodriguez hopes is the first of a series, Sin City is a spectacular achievement. --David Horiuchi</p>

Description
An amazing cast of big-screen favorites is directed by Robert Rodriguez (DESPERADO, FROM DUSK TILL DAWN), Frank Miller -- and special guest director Quentin Tarantino (KILL BILL 1 and 2, PULP FICTION) -- in an acclaimed and visually stunning hit that's the coolest movie of the year! Straight from the pages of Miller's hip series of "Sin City" graphic novels, Bruce Willis stars as a cop with a bum ticker and a vow to protect a sexy stripper (Jessica Alba -- FANTASTIC FOUR); Mickey Rourke (MAN ON FIRE) as an outcast misanthrope on a mission to avenge the death of his one true love (Jaime King -- PEARL HARBOR); and Clive Owen (KING ARTHUR) as Dwight, the clandestine love of Shellie (Brittany Murphy -- LITTLE BLACK BOOK), who spends his night defending Gail (Rosario Dawson -- THE DEVIL'S REJECTS) and her Old Town girls (Devon Aoki and Alexis Bledel) from a tough guy (Benicio Del Toro -- 21 GRAMS) with a penchant for violence. Also starring Elijah Wood, Nick Stahl, Michael Madsen, Carla Gugino, and Michael Clarke Duncan.

Soooo Freakin Good.......2007-06-19
So, you watch movies to be entertained and that's what you get with this movie. You never want to stop watching AND then you want to watch it again. There is a lot of gore but, it's kind of abstracted by the comic book setting but overall it's a pretty rough movie. Still, it was good enough we are planning to watch it again.
A nice DVD package........2007-05-30
This is a nice package for a film such as this. My only wish, is that it would contain more interviews with Frank Miller and how he brought Sin City to life as a comic book. But other than that, there's a nice selection of interesting features on how they made this fantastic film. Plus, this DVD contains a complete copy of The Hard Goodbye, which is one of the original graphic novels. It's fun DVD to have. I hope you like it!
Frank Miller Fan.......2007-05-26
This is an amazing two-disc release. Director Robert Rodriguez brilliantly brings to life Frank Miller's graphic novels, and does not hold back with the development of these gritty characters. Mickey Rourke alone deserves 5 stars for his portrayal of Marv. This set is worth having strictly on the merits of the development of that character. For anyone who has a love for the making of films and the time consuming processes involved in the "behind the scenes", the bonus disc will satisfy your appreciation for the multifaceted areas of story telling. Let's hope that when Frank Miller's "300" is released to DVD, that the extras will be just as enjoyable.

I have to give this movie five stars It is mezmerizing. I used to read a lot of comic book and graphic novels and even though I never read the Sin City novels I still read some of the dark black and white Manga. This whole movie looks and feels like a dark gothic comic book. I give it one star for the great story line another star for it`s cast, another star for the way it`s is filmed (black and white with accents of color )very cool, another star dark for the and creepy musical score and the 5th star well....I think I will just give that to Nancy .God bless you little girl.

Alicia Silverstone won everyone over with her portrayal of a Beverly Hills teen, Cher, whose penchant for helping others with their relationships and self-esteem is a cover for her own loneliness. Director Amy Heckerling (<I>Fast Times at Ridgemont High</I>) made a smart, funny variation on Jane Austen's novel <I>Emma</I>, sweetly romantic and gently satirical of <I>90210</I> social manners. The cast is unbeatable: Dan Hedaya as Cher's rock-solid dad, Wallace Shawn as a geeky teacher, Paul Rudd as the boy who has always been Cher's surrogate brother--and the true holder of her most secret wishes. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

CLASSIC TEEN COMEDY DOES FOR THE 90'S WHAT FAST TIMES DID FOR THE 80'S.......2007-04-07
This is another great teen comedy. A very well written film with a great cast! The best of it's kind. The DVD has a great transfer and some cool extras.
FUN! .......2007-03-17
If you like Clueless this is a cool copy to own because of the bonus features. It has some interviews with the cast (from recently! perhaps 2004-05? talking about their experience- obviously they're much older, experienced (some haven't been in any prominent roles since then...) so it's really interesting to see what they had to say.
This movie is a classic. The jokes are so subtle at times, I didn't remember how funny this movie was. There are a lot of jokes I never understood when I saw this film when I younger that I appreciate and understand much more. At the same time, I wouldn't not recommend younger audiences to see it. There's nothing extreme.
Pretty light-hearted film. It doesn't really leaving you asking yourself any meaningful, philosophical questions but it is very entertianing.
Classic teen romance movie.......2007-03-12
I am writing this review to emphasize and support the review by Luis Hernandez. His review of this movie sums it up exquisitely.
Although I am way past my teen years, I still enjoy them very much. This movie embodies, for me, teen romance movie perfection.
It's witty, it's well acted, it's a satiric look at a certain teen culture (spoiled teens with too much money), and the script is wonderful.
Alicia Silverstone's portrayal of Cher is priceless and so is the script. A not to be missed entry in the teen romance/comedy movie genre.
Do not be put off by the average 4 star rating of Amazon's customer reviews. This really is a 5 star movie for its genre.
I compare this movie to the "The Breakfast Club", an entry in the teen angst genre, another 5 star movie in my opinion.

Based on Susanna Kaysen's acclaimed journal-memoir, <I>Girl, Interrupted</I> bears inevitable resemblance to <I>One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest</I>, and pale comparison to that earlier classic is impossible to avoid. The mental institution settings of both films guarantee a certain degree of déjà vu and at least one Oscar winner (in this case, Angelina Jolie), since playing a loony is any actor's dream gig. Unfortunately, director James Mangold seems to have misplaced the depth and delicacy of his underrated debut, <I>Heavy</I>, despite a great deal of earnest effort by everyone involved. It's easy to see why Winona Ryder chose to star in (and executive-produce) this nearly worthy adaptation of Kaysen's book, since it's a strong vehicle for female casting and potent drama. Mangold certainly got the former; whether he succeeded with the latter is not so clear.
To be sure, Ryder conveys the confusion and chaos that signified Kaysen's life during nearly 18 months of voluntary institutionalization beginning in 1967. But the film seems too eager to embrace the cliché that the "crazies" of the Claymoore women's ward are saner than the war-torn world outside, and lack of narrative focus gives way to semipredictable character study. Susanna (Ryder) is labeled with "borderline personality disorder," a diagnosis as ambiguous as her own emotions, and while Jolie chews the scenery as the resident bad-girl sociopath, Ryder effectively conveys an odyssey from vulnerable fear to self-awareness and, finally, to healing. The ensemble cast is uniformly superb, making this drama well worthwhile, even as it treads familiar territory. If it ultimately lacks dramatic impact, <I>Girl, Interrupted</I> makes it painfully clear that the boundaries of dysfunction are hazy in a world where everyone's crazy once in a while. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Customer Reviews:
Angie gives us an almost FLAWLESS performance........2007-06-18
This movie is what REALLY introduced me to the intoxicating world of Angelina Jolie. Her acting is enthralling, and at times, I cannot take my eyes off of her. That's a REAL actress for you. I had seen her previously in the Tomb Raider series. But that was nothing compared to this masterpiece. Another work of art in the Jolie realm is 'Foxfire.' Check that out after this one!! I recommend this to anyone with an open minded sense for stories and characters outside the box...
Boring, self-indulgent.......2007-06-15
Probably if one read the book, a lot of things would be explained that are confusing and poorly spelled-out in this film. As it stands by itself, though, the movie is dull and seems to go nowhere worth getting to. The two hours passed at a tortoise pace and you found yourself wishing the characters would just o.d. and end their torment and yours.
The characters are universally unlikeable. Both Ryder and Jolie seem spoiled and self-indulgent (their characters and the actresses). I'm really surprised Jolie won an Oscar for this role when all she does is perform Acting 101 hystrionics. Even when her acting is turning you off, however, you find yourself fascinated and repulsed by her mutant lips.
As I said, I'm sure the book approaches this topic in a much more coherent and sympathetic way. Having wasted two precious hours watching this movie, I'm not at all tempted to find out if this is true or not. But for the sake of the author, and for anyone suffering from borderline personality, I hope it is so. Both deserve better than this snore-fest.
WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE.......2007-05-08
NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE
doesn't really follow the book, does it?.......2007-03-17
Lots of extra stuff that wasn't in Kaysen's memoir--that bothers me. It just seemed like it was a chance for Winona Ryder to attempt "real" acting, and to gain respect as an actor. Instead, Jolie snagged the Oscar, and Ryder slipped into A Scanner Darkly.
Ryder again showcases her highly over-emotive acting ability that has been overrated from day one, and Jolie gets to look crazy and beautiful at the same time for the umpteenth millionth time. YAWN.
Read the book instead.
Girl Interrupted.......2007-03-09
This is a very true story based on true facts.
It's very intense, sad, happy, triumphant, provocative in many ways, it's nerve wracking, it's exciting in some ways. It all depends on your perspective, but I think this movie has a not to offer and is very knowledgeable to the ways of the insane.
Angelina Jolie, Whoopie Goldberg, and Winona Ryder are exceptional in this movie.
Jared Leto, even though he has not that many scenes adds a very nice flavor to the break in manotony of the story line. He, along with the ladies mentioned, are all just so phenominally talented in their crafts.
It's war time, Vietnam to be exact, he is drafted, but leaves the country. Winona's character, although she does love him, knows that she must stay behind and take care of herself. She comes to terms with her own demons, and sacrifices her love for him to take care of herself.
She not only wins her own battles with depression, but also wakes up the self awareness to many of those who she shares her story with.
Those who win the inner war within themselves succeed to move on to normal somewhat happy lives. Those who can't get past themselves, remain locked inside of their own heads.
This is a very compelling movie of self worth, self control, self respect, and respect for others as very delicate beings.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone who suffers from self doubt and depression. I think it could really help, and inspire those who need self motivation, when you think all else has failed.
It's about gathering all that is within you, and finding love within yourself, FOR yourself.
I give this movie 5*'s.
Excellant performances by Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, WHOOPIE GOLDBERG, and Jared Leto.

<I>Spun</I> is an unclassifiable ensemble piece, intentionally bleached of soulfulness and high on visual invention and comic depravity. Set in north Los Angeles, where meth freaks lurch from one motel room to another in search of companionship and a score, the film stars Jason Schwartzman as Ross, whose life is rapidly disintegrating. Fielding phone messages from his mother and trying in vain to reach an old girlfriend, Ross spends most of his time on a feverish circuit with the half-mad Cookie (Mena Suvari) and Nikki (Brittany Murphy), the dangerously paranoid Spider Mike (John Leguizamo), and a macho drugmaker called the Cook (Mickey Rourke). Director Jonas Akerlund's story is nonexistent, but then again <I>Spun</I> is driven by the blurry, hellish energy of a life lived on speed. An obvious influence is Darren Aronofsky's <I>Requiem for a Dream</I>, but Akerlund is interested in nightmarish set pieces than tiny horrors of misfired nerve endings and ravaged time. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

I only buy great movies.......2007-05-25
This movie is a comical view at the life of a meth user. I really love this movie. It's better than MTV's "True life - I'm a meth user."
A Must See!.......2007-05-13
This movie will definitely keep you entertained! A must see and a must add to your movie library collection.
Great Look at the Drug World.......2007-05-12
Very good depiction of the other side of the human dependency. If you like Natural Born Killers than you should enjoy this!!!!!!!!!
Jump Cuts Like A Knife.......2007-02-18
A lot of the criticism I've read about this movie has to do with the editing. To which I say: did all those jump cuts make you jumpy? Well, that's probably the point - to try and propel you the viewer into the confused and addled mindset of a fiending meth junkie. MY only problem is - once that point is made, the rest of the movie is kind of pointless (although, maybe the other point was to make a movie that's as much of a mess as the characters it represents. And while that wouldn't exactly be a propitious goal, at least it's a goal that they reached).
Granted, some of the skittish shots are beautifully composed - clearly it was a labor of (unrequited?) love to assemble so many artful shots only to run rampant with the jump cut Ginsu knife. And the opening title sequence is gorgeous. I could have watched it forever (which is both good and bad, since what I'm ultimately saying is this movie would have worked better as a music video).
It's a fine line (and one of the only ones that doesn't get snorted in the film), but sometimes a movie's style can get in the way of its substance. And, in the worst cases, sometimes its style serves to mask a lack of substance. This film suffers symptoms from both of these syndromes. I appreciate its aim, but for me the target was never quite hit.
The "comic" moments aren't that funny and the serious moments are undermined by the previous attempts at comedy. The acting is a bit forced and tone-deaf at times (Mena Suvari is surprisingly stilted and just can't seem to be convincingly hyperactive, but Brittany Murphy is actually really good).
The writing is subpar - there are no truly memorable lines that stuck in my mind (for which these kinds of movies are usually reliable). Plot? Not really. Guy drives around, leaves a girl in bed, tries to call his girlfriend. Which would be fine, if the movie was a slice of life or a character study, but this doesn't really feel like much of either.
Most of the celebrity cameos (Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, Ron Jeremy of porn) are distracting and kind of useless (still, I can't bring myself to type anything mean about Debbie Harry, so I won't).
And by the time Mickey Rourke gets around to telling his "old dog" tale to a sleeping Jason Schwartzman, I'm practically comatose myself. So when the movie finally reaches its supposedly explosive climax, I'm numb. I'm spent. I'm spun. I'm done. Again, maybe that's the point. But it ain't no fun.
I'd like to give this movie 2.5 stars, but since I have to round up or down, I'll give it credit for being ambitious in what it's trying to do (as well as being so visually intoxicating) and round up to three.
WOW.......2007-02-14
Never seen anything quite like this movie. Absolutely loved how accurate and cleverly made with a style all its own.Pretty cool. One of my favs.

Subtle is not the word to describe <I>Drop Dead Gorgeous</I>, a mock documentary purporting to cover the Sarah Rose Cosmetics Teen America Beauty Pageant in Mount Rose, Minnesota. Ellen Barkin (<I>Sea of Love</I>) and Kirsten Dunst (<I>Interview with a Vampire</I>, <I>Dick</I>) are perfectly cast as a mother and daughter whose only ambition is to use the pageant to get out of their claustrophobic small-town lives. Opposing them are Denise Richards (<I>Wild Things</I>, <I>Starship Troopers</I>) and her mother, Kirstie Alley (<I>Look Who's Talking</I>), who just happens to be the pageant's organizer. The plot, which centers on contestants being murdered (mostly by flaming explosions), is clearly secondary to the backstage shenanigans and satirical portrayals of vanity, small-town corruption, and family dysfunction. There's not much suspense to the pageant itself, but Dunst is an endearing protagonist and along with the broad jokes are some excellent acting turns from the cast, particularly Barkin, Brittany Murphy (<I>Clueless</I>), Nora Dunn (a <I>Saturday Night Live</I> alumna), and the great character actress Allison Janney, who's played small roles in countless movies but finally gets a chance to shine as the supportive neighbor of Barkin and Dunst. In fact, for all the jokes and satirical jabs, in the end it's the characters' relationships that stay in your mind. A bonus: the soundtrack features a hard-rocking version of the theme from <I>The Mary Tyler Moore Show</I>, performed with cool aplomb by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

horrible service.......2007-05-13
had to get in contact first because it was never shipped. recieved sincere apology and a promise to have it shipped immediately... was NOT shipped immediately. took 2 1/2 months for a movie that is a ten years old to be shipped to me. Dissapointed with service.
drop dead gorgeous.......2007-02-06
first rate light comedy. highest marks for the casting; esp. kirsten dunst.
Drop Dead Gorgeous.......2007-01-23
If you are a Lutheran with parents who were both born in Minnesota, you can really appreciate the humor in this movie. The Minnesota accent is great, and the reference to Lutefisk really put it over the top for me. Eventhough I grewup in Southern California, my parents brought their Scandinavian customs, so we had Lutefisk for Christmas and New Years. Also, the Womans Lutheran Gun Club was a nice touch. Bottom line, this is a very funny movie.
This is no mere teen comedy!.......2007-01-23
One of the funniest films to come out in a long time, `Drop Dead Gorgeous' delivers on every page, from it's collective cast to it's genuine laughs. In true mockumentary style this film follows a group of girls as they compete in the Sarah Rose Cosmetics Teen American Beauty Pageant in Mount Rose, Minnesota. This group includes the sweet girl who everyone loves, namely Amber Atkins (Kirsten Dunst) and the social queen whom everyone loathes, namely Rebecca Leeman (Denise Richards). Amber is the talented poor girl who everyone feels should win the whole shebang, but standing in her way every step of the way is talentless rich girl Becky and her mother Gladys (Kirstie Alley who is absolutely fantastic!) who just so happens to be hosting the pageant.
The interaction between the contestants coupled with the over-dramatized drama and competitive spirit make for an entertaining comedy that will have you in stitches scene after scene. Helping this film along are great comedic performances by it's entire cast, Dunst included who just shines in every role she undertakes (why is she not `Oscar Nominated' Kirsten Dunst yet???). Ellen Barkin is fantastic as Amber's mother Annette (trailer park at its finest) and Allison Janney is a pure scene stealer as their neighbor and friend Loretta. The rest of the girls competing are great as well, Brittany Murphy and Amy Adams being recognizable faces, and Michael McShane is hilarious as Harold the overweight father of a mentally handicapped son.
Look for plenty of memorable scenes like when Harold's son gets his pants caught in the car door or when the previous winner of the pageant comes out on stage to sing `Don't Cry Out Loud' (my favorite scene). There is a lot to love here and for that I'm sure many will find this film to be not only hilariously enjoyable but worthy of repeat viewings for it's one of those films that just never gets old. Put this up there with `Best in Show' as one of the most ingenious comedies to come along in quite some time!
Extremely Subversive.......2007-01-13
Imagine a weird blend of "This Is Spinal Tap" and "Fargo" and you will have a fairly good read on 1999's "Drop Dead Gorgeous. There is definitely a Coen Brothers feel to the film, which is done in "mockumentary" style and told from the point of view of a film crew investigating the world of local beauty pageants; specifically the Miss Teen Princess contest in Mount Rose, Minnesota.
But it would be a mistake to think that this is just a satire of the beauty pageant world or of folks from Minnesota. The film has much bigger targets, as it pretty much takes on every excess to be found in the competitive culture of modern American. Making it the most subversive comedy since "Dr. Strangelove". It may not have the consistency of Kubrick's masterpiece, but it has a slightly higher comic hit to miss ratio than "Airplane".
Former Miss Teen Princess Gladys Leeman (Kirstie Alley) is in charge of the Mount Rose preliminary, a conflict of interest because her daughter Becky (Denise Richards) (a younger version of her mercenary mother) is a leading contender. After murdering her daughter's only real competition, Gladys targets trailer-park girl Amber (Kirsten Dunst), who hopes to use the contest as a means to follow in the footsteps of her idol Diane Sawyer.
There are so many different types of humor in "Drop Dead Gorgeous" that almost any viewer will find something amusing. But the degree of amusement will be in direct proportion to your degree of irreverence and "nothing sacred" attitudes. So if you are easily offended or are sense of humor challenged you would do well to stay away from this film.
I particularly liked the contestant's dramatic reading from "Soylent Green", and Britney Murphy's line about being conceived because her parents wanted someone who could donate a kidney to her older brother.
Although she only has a small part, Murphy pretty much steals every scene in which she appears. The three big parts (Alley, Richards, and Dunst) are played straight (or with parodied straightness) so most of the comedy comes from the supporting cast; most notably Allison Janney as a trailer park neighbor, Will Sasso as a mentally challenged small businessman, Seiko Matsudo as the resentful biological daughter of an Asian couple who dote on their adopted Caucasian daughter, and Matt Malloy as a contest judge with a not so secret agenda.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

Executive producers Dustin Hoffman and Mimi Rogers present the truth of the Holocaust so a new generation can understand why it must never be forgotten. Kirsten Dunst plays Hannah, a modern teen more concerned with trends than history. During the traditional Passover dinner, she zones out as her relatives harp about concentration camps. But then Hannah passes through a portal to the past, where she becomes her own ancestor in Poland during the Nazi persecution of the Jews.<P>Director Donna Deitch provides an infinite library of Holocaust detail, re-creating the period with minute dedication. Haunting images, every costume, every hair, every light and shadow conspire to maintain a sense of desolate desperation. Suspense pervades as escapes fail and mothers with newborns are taken away. Only the magical context of the story, taken from the original children's novel by Jane Yolen, allows for a life-affirming ending. The performances may not be multifaceted but, considering the single-mindedness of the tale, the deep commitment of the actors makes every moment real and meaningful. Dunst seems able to carry a movie herself, and Brittany Murphy is mesmerizing as Hannah's sweet cousin Rivkah.<P>The message is powerfully direct, but the film avoids extreme violence in deference to young audiences. The theme is enshrined in the Rivkah's words: "We must stay alive to tell everyone what we've been through." Indeed, when Hannah returns to the present, she is a new woman, with a profound love of her culture and a religious respect for the value of all human life. <I>--Lloyd Chesley</I>
Description
Based on the popular novel by Jane Yolen, a typical American teenager gets transported back in time and experiences firsthand the horrors of the Holocaust and discovers the meaning of her family's heritage.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad, but disappointing after the book........2007-06-18
I purchased this movie to go along with my sixt[...] Holocaust unit, in which we read the Jane Yolen novel on which the movie is based. The changes were a disappointment to both me and my students. In fact, of my 60 students, 59 wrote they were disappointed with the movie version after reading the book (they enjoyed the book a great deal). While the movie is not poor, it doesn't measure up to the book, but that seems to be the norm. It provided a great assignment of comparison/contrast, as mentioned by J. Potter "Teacher with a Mission".
Interesting, provocative and powerful!.......2007-05-09
I was born years after the holocaust occured. Decades after.
What I know of it, I know of books, movies and stories told to me by those who lived through it and experienced it first hand (or even second hand). To that end, I have no true reference point to say whether or not this movie was true to life. What I do know is that it stayed true to the horrors that were the holocaust. What I do know is that it runs parallell to virtually every story I've ever been told about this horrific series of events.
The images are powerful and stark, but not so disturbing that a Junior High child will be scarred for life. I do believe it will move them. I do believe it will give them their first real glimpse into this horrifying period of Mankind's history. It will give them a tiny glimpse into the heart of true EVIL. I do believe it will cause many inquisitive children to want to learn the truth about this tragedy. It will give them pause to talk to Grandma or Great Grandma about what they experienced as a child. It will breed empathy and sympathy. I know this because I've seen it have this effect on kids.
The movie itself takes a fantasy approach to a real world, historical event. You're carried into the dream world of Hannah, (Dunst) who is somehow magicaly transported back to the days of World War 2. What she experiences transforms her from a typical "apathetic" teen to a wisdom-possessing child on the verge of womanhood. It grants her an understanding of the world few children can ever truly possess. Through this dream (or is it a dream?) her eyes are opened to reality. The line between good and evil becomes a bit more clouded, though the truth about Mankind's existence becomes all too clear.
A great way to introduce children to this disturbing period of history. a strong story, worthy of praise. Contrary to what some others have felt, I felt as though it was a decent adaptation of the book.
Heart-wrenching.......2007-04-07
We had a week long study of the Holocaust. We watched this movie with 7th and 8th graders. I think it was the first time that you could hear dust fall in the classroom. It is meaningful and heartwrenching and is a good starting point to discuss persecutions that are happening around the globe today.
A disappointment.......2007-03-23
If you have ever read the book The Devil's Arithmetic then you know that the movie is by far a disappointment. I ended up using it as a teaching lesson and helping my students learn to compare and contrast. However I really expected more from the movie. It was such a great opportunity for the film makers to help teenagers of today make a real world connection to the atrocities of the Holocaust. Instead they changed the plot around only keeping the main idea of the book, cut essential characters, changed the main characters age and her relationship with a significant minor character, added a poor sub plot of a love interest, and the list goes on. The book itself is so powerful that I can not see how the author was not repulsed by the drastic changes made to such a well thought out and organized novel. I would not recommend this movie to anyone unless they were looking for a movie with some big names and terrible acting.
THE DEVIL'S ARTITHMATIC.......2007-03-09
I SAW THIS MOVIE WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT. A FRIEND AND I WERE TALKING ABOUT BOOKS ON THE HOLOCAST. I TOLD HER ABOUT THIS MOVIE, SHE SAID SHE WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT. I CAME ONTO THSI WEBSITE TO SEE IF I COULD FIND IT. I WAS REALLY THRILLED THAT I COULD GET IT. SO I ORDERED 2 COPIES, ONE FOR ME AND ONE FOR MY FRIEND. I AM GOING TO HAVE MY GRANDDAUGHTERS WATCH IT WHEN THEY COME TO VISIT THIS SUMMER.

<I>Riding in Cars with Boys</I> achieves broad appeal as a tearjerker laced with hardscrabble humor. In the crowd-pleasing hands of director Penny Marshall, Beverly Donofrio's bestselling memoir loses much of its real-life gravity, but its rich humanity remains in abundance, especially since Drew Barrymore plays Donofrio with effortless charm. The movie spans 20 years, from Bev's pregnancy at 15 in 1963 (actually 17 in the book), through welfare parenthood with a heroin-addicted husband (Steve Zahn), and semi-adult resentment as her teenaged son (Adam Garcia) takes priority over her ultimate goal of finishing college and publishing her memoir. For all of Barrymore's winning tenacity, it's Zahn's goodhearted loser who gives the film its genuine soul while lending an edge to Marshall's cloying sentiment. The material begs for the subtler touch of James L. Brooks (who produced this and Marshall's more delicate hit <I>Big</I>), but that won't stop this movie from attracting a legion of admirers. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Customer Reviews:
Pretty good.......2007-06-16
I didn't plan on watching this, but it turned out to be one of those slow evenings and quite frankly there was nothing else on. To my surprise I found myself drawn into the story. Mainly because our heroine, Bev, was certainly a flawed character and was unable to see her contribution to the direction her life took. Though I was a little confused in the begining to how old she was. Not until it was revealed that she was riding with her son and not a boyfriend did the clouds finally part-though it was pretty laughable given Drew Barrymore didn't even look twenty-five herself next to her "son". However, for the most part, this film was interesting but I'm unclear the point of this journey. When Bev gives the speech about how her son saved her, I'm not sure I believed her or believed that she believed it. When did this revealation occur to her? And when she whines to her father in the car, it's clear to me that even then she doesn't believe that she screwed up her son's life. But overall, it's a descent story-especially if there's nothing else on.
Riding in Cars with Boys.......2007-03-09
My wife and I find the storyline to be realistic. The characters portrayed people who were believable in spite of their dysfunctions.
This movie has been added to our collection of movies to be viewed often.
A True Account of a Young Mother's Life.......2006-08-30
This is the heart-warming, tear-jerking, yet still comical tale of a young girl named Beverly growing up during the 1950s; a time when sexual promiscuity was forbidden and, should an "accident" occur, the young couple wed right away.
And that is what happens when Beverly meets Ray. Forced to put aside her dreams of college and becoming a writer, Beverly and Ray wed and then along comes Jason, their son. Beverly finds herself still holding on to her dreams while trying to tame Ray into fatherhood and raise her baby boy. Needless to say, the marriage does last but your children are always your children; thus the story focuses on Beverly and Jason.
Anyone who has had a child at a young age, wed or unwed, can relate to this tale of lost dreams and life's struggles told from Jason's point of view. Essentially, it is the tale of how young mothers and their offspring grow-up together; how they depend on and learn from one another.
To me, the most touching part of this movie came with the confrontation between Beverly and grown-up Jason soon after Jason sees his father, Ray, after many years of absence from his life. I won't spoil it telling what occurs, but it is the most truthful yet touching part of the movie.
Definitely a chick flick. Guys won't get it under any circumstance. Ladies, save it for a night that you need to laugh through tears.
Wonderfully Acted!!!.......2006-04-21
I really enjoy this film because despite that is sad its also very funny. This is a movie about the outside world, about what its really like to be a mother at young age. I recommend it especially to young teenagers that think being a mother would be EASY. When in reality its not!!
Riding in cars "ON" boys.......2006-03-17
Nothing but a lame excuse to show the overrated Barrymore's face on the screen again.
