Who would have thought that <I>Primeval</I>, a movie about a giant man-eating crocodile, would turn out to be closer in spirit to <I>Hotel Rwanda</I> and <I>Blood Diamond</I> than to the average slasher-movie horror flick? Perhaps it doesn't aim at the social-issue heights of those more prestigious films, and the acting is uneven to say the least, but give this monster movie credit for trying to get in the smart, edgy vein of some of John Sayles's early scripts for Roger Corman. A cable-TV news crew travels to Burundi to capture footage of (and, if possible, just plain capture) the enormous crocodile that's been terrorizing the local landscape. Making things more complicated: the local landscape is also being terrorized by a civil war. The film does a clever job of weaving the two scourges together, and the script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris pays surprisingly explicit attention to the way the West has been slow to acknowledge human-rights disasters in Africa, calling out Rwanda and Darfur by name. Now if only the characters were more than cardboard-thin; only Orlando Jones, doing the standard-issue wisecracking black sidekick, makes any particular impression. (Poor Jurgen Prochnow, glowering about in the Great White Hunter role--you'd think the guy who commanded <I>Das Boot</I> could knock off a giant reptile, no problem.) Pedestrian direction doesn't bring the human element to life, but give it up for a fine crocodile--his name is Gustave--who exists in a nifty, hungry computer-generated frenzy for most of his performance. And the script even provides Gustave some behavioral motivation that recalls the it's-not-their-fault-it's-man's-fault spirit of 1950s monster movies. Not a bad effort at all. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Description

Inspired by the true story of a legendary 25-foot man-eating crocodile comes the intense, terrifying horror movie PRIMEVAL, starring Dominic Purcell (TV's PRISON BREAK) and Orlando Jones (RUNAWAY JURY, EVOLUTION). An American news crew, determined to capture this voracious monster and stop his demonic rampage, travel deep within the darkest reaches of Africa to hunt their prey. But Gustave, as the natives call him, is also on the hunt — always on the move, always elusive, always hungry for human flesh. Heart-pounding fear is nonstop in this edge-of-your-seat nail-biter about the cunning killer who continues to blaze his blood-soaked trail of terror.

2 out of 5 stars More CGI than Shrek!.......2007-06-23

The Croc was so cartoony I thought I was watching the sequel to Pete's Dragon. At no time in the movie are you fooled by the croc. When the croc runs it's even funnier than watching Steven Seagal run. The direct to video Crocodile movies look better in a lot of ways.

5 out of 5 stars Based On A True Story.......2007-06-19

My Oppinion: Primeval is a great creature movie. I've alays enjoyed these types of films.

About The Movie: Primeval is based on a real life 25 foot man eating crocodile. The movie sets in africa where the thing actually lives. The movie is about a crew of news reporters who are sent catch the croc on film or catch the croc its self. In the middle of trying to get the killer croc one f news memeber played by orlando bloom accidentaly catches an exucution on tape and that they are now on the bad guys most wanted list. did a metion that africa is under civil war. well they got themeselves in a fine mess, Killer croc, merssinaries and civil war soldiers oh my. can they escape or will they get eaten, shot or beheaded. well you'll just have to find out.

My second oppinion. Even though this is based on a true story the most scariest part is that the Crocodile is still alive. This movie rocks i don't care what any body else says.

2 out of 5 stars Very misleading billing.......2007-06-18

Once again Hollywood has mislead us into watching a movie. If you were to watch the trailers you would think this was going to be a slasher thriller of gigantic proportions. What a hoax!
It is hard to say just what this movie wanted to be about. The plot has been gone over, so I won't do that. What I will say is that it starts out gathering a herd of 'unsuspecting' victims and relocating them to where the danger is... all typical.
However, on the way, we learn of the political unrest in the land they travel to. From there on this movie flips back and forth from being the slasher/thriller to being an expose of murder and mayhem generated by the local king.
It flips and flops so poorly that it never dwells in any area long enough which is distracting. The acting is poor save for Orlando Bloom.
The only thing this movie does do is pull the two plots together in at the end... for about 3 minutes.
What could they have been thinking?
I don't know about anyone else out there... but I'm getting really tired of the 'Bait and switch' routine that Hollywood is doing to get people to watch movies.
If you're absolutely bored and up for ANY kind of distraction this movie will suffice... while you do laundry or cooking or something else.
Otherwise... pass it by. Honestly isn't worth the money they spent on it.

4 out of 5 stars Very good CG, and a pretty fun movie too.......2007-06-18

This is one I will definitely be adding to my horror collection. There have been alot of killer-croc movies and most have been pretty poor, but I found this one to be exciting, fun, and surprisingly well shot. Throw in the fact that it is based on a true story and it all adds up to a nice surprise in what has been a dreary year for horror movies. I'm not sure of the box-office totals, but I don't think it fared very well, and obviously by reading alot of the other reviews most of you didn't care for it, and that's a shame. Let me ask you all when was the last time you saw a good creature feature? It's been a long time, so for those who have not seen it, give it a chance, I'm glad I did.

I see a few people are complaining about the acting, and granted, it's not top-notch, but then again.....it's a creature feature remember? Who cares about the acting? The real star is the croc, and it's quite a sight to behold. I usually don't give props to CG unless it's done real well and believable and it succeeds here. Never through the entire movie did it look fake, grainy or mis-matched, and by that I mean the backgrounds stayed the same as did the colors. Some of the croc killing scenes are real intense and gory which just added to the terror of how monstrous and horrible this thing was. The natives have taken to calling him Gustave and apparently Gustave has killed almost 300 people in real life, that alone is pretty unsettling. I must insist everyone watch the special feature "Crokumentary: The making of Gustave" I appreciate the time and labor the crew when into making Gustave look as real as possible and the attention to detail and perfection the director was aiming for.

Dominic Purcell and Orlando Jones are both decent, Orlando is able to crack some funny one-liners and actually show he has a little range as an actor. The female lead (Brooke Langton) is rather bland but easy on the eyes, and Jurgen Procknow is credible as usual until he dies, cuz' let's face it, every movie he does, he dies in..... The scenery is wonderfull and the war between the two African factions is scary and sad and adds a crual conflict to the back-drop of the search for Gustave. The ending also surprised me, it was well done and exciting, didn't feel rushed and nice to see the not-so-happy ending for once. The African swamp is a creepy place and the movie is eager to show all just how creepy it can get.

The movie is not perfect by any means, and instead of listing it's short-comings I'm going to just say again how much fun I had watching it. It was a pleasant surprise and helps me to believe in monster movies again, as I have been a fan of them my whole life. One of my favorite early 80's horror movies was Alligator, and this had the same feeling and vibe as that movie. The special effects are solid, the acting decent, and Gustave was just awesome I tell you, awesome. Gustave apparently still lives and hunts along that same river, maybe we can get a sequel down the road, could be fun, here's hoping...........

3 out of 5 stars Monster movie that doesn't bite..........2007-06-17

The other day I watched part of "Lake Placid II" on the Sci-Fi network and it was really bad. Well, probably much worse than that. Actually it was unwatchable.
The killer croc storyline's been done many times but only once or twice decently. If you know anything about croc movies than you realize I'm referring to the fabulous "Alligator" and the above average "Lake Placid".
Part of the problem with Primevil is that there's too much going on, diverges in too many directions, and often leaves viewers somewhat lost. The film takes itself rather seriously and suffers from a lack of consistent tone, humour, & focus. On the upside the violence when it presents itself is often extremely brutal and unrelentling & the CGI, above average in most scenes, manages to convey the "monster" to good effect. I still wasn't able to discern if this was a monster flick, a war thriller, or a statement film proselytizing on the politics of Africa? It's a little hard to follow frankly but I guess that's not of huge importance since I found myself shamelessly enjoying the film. Remember the movie Anaconda? Well if you're reading this review then of course you do. At any rate I pretty much hated that film but found this to be interesting & kind of weird where Anaconda was just derivative & cheesy. For fans of "Jaws", Primevil ain't a bad popcorn event. For fans of "Tentacles" (yes, with Shelley Winters) this will be an almost memorable way to spend two hours.

For anyone who wants to catch a glimpse of the Los Angeles "lounge" scene that was in vogue during the early and mid-1990s, here's the movie that virtually defined that brief but colorful nightlife milieu. As an added bonus, it just happens to be a very funny, observant story about love, loss, and male bonding among a group of friends who struggle to find decent jobs by day, and lurk through Hollywood's hottest nightclubs by night. A sort of latter-day Rat Pack, they include Mike (writer-actor Jon Favreau) and his closest buddy, Trent (Vince Vaughn), who are waiting for the big show-biz break that seems to be eluding them. Mike's twisted up about the girlfriend he left back East to pursue his going-nowhere standup comedy career, and Trent uses the word "money" as an adjective ("Man, we look totally money tonight") with such frequency that you may find yourself slipping into lounge-lizard mode after watching the movie. One of the most noteworthy indie-film success stories of the '90s, this time-capsule comedy seized its moment in the spotlight, launched several promising careers, and continues to maintain its lasting appeal. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Jon Favreau wrote a fantastic script; Doug Liman directed a great flick; Vince Vaughn owned the film. 'Nuf said!

OK, maybe a little more. This has got to be one of, if not THE, greatest indie films of all time.

And, like I said, BIG MONEY doesn't make a great movie. There have been plenty of big dollar box office flops, but you can probably count on 1 hand (maybe 2) the number of films that were made for what equates to peanuts and still totally own every minute on the screen.

This was an instant cult classic, acclaimed by critics, and it got the big-time attention it deserved later on.

Mike, an every day "joe", broke up with his girl, moved to L.A. to be a comedian, and settled in to a long time funk. His "west coast" pals, some real characters (enter Vince Vaughn and Patrick Van Horn), give him all the right advice which Mike uses at the wrong time. His "east coast" pal (Ron Livingston) tries to keep Mike grounded.

But, basically what you get is a train wreck in the love department, backlit by the glitz of Vegas and the back-alley bar scene of L.A. Anyone can relate to Mike and most of us have had moments like the other guys too.

Just check out this movie. A review or summary just can't do it justice. It is intelligent, sappy (in a good way), relatable and HILARIOUS.

FYI, great soundtrack to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Go, Daddy-O!.......2007-05-24

Few films have explored the pain of being a 20-something single as hilariously as Doug Liman's classic "Swingers." If you've never seen this film, which packs a bevy of memorable scenes and spawned several catch phrases ("You're so money!"), it's high time you checked it out.

"Swingers" follows the ups and downs (mostly downs) of Mike (Jon Favreau), a struggling actor who has recently moved to Los Angeles from New York. When he moved, he left behind a girlfriend of six years, and he hasn't been able to get her off his mind, a problem that's exasperated by his lack of success on the L.A. singles scene.

Fortunately for Mikey, he's got some buddies who are bent on cheering him up, most notably the smooth-talking Trent (Vince Vaughn), who convinces Mike to make an impromptu trip to Vegas to wash away his problems with gambling, women and booze. It's the first of many unsuccessful (and roaringly funny) forays into the singles scene for Mikey, who is alternately too nice, too nervous, and too neurotic to achieve any level of success with the ladies.

This sort of material has been mined with much less success by many movies, but "Swingers" has three noteworthy forces working for it: star Favreau's superb script, a great cast and Liman's top-notch direction.

The witty screenplay delivers enough laughs and memorable lines to reward repeat viewings, from Trent's boast that he's going to "Find me two cocktail waitresses and pull me a Fredo" to a hilarious conversation between Mike, Trent and the rest of the crew about how long you should wait before calling a girl whose "digits" you got.

Liman, who also directed the excellent "Go," throws in a a number of deft touches that add to the script. Check out the slo-mo walking scene that's an amusing homage to Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs." Or the unusual imagery complete with "Jaws" music to illustrate Trent's growing discomfort with a girl he just met.

The ensemble cast is terrific, with special kudos to the two leads, Favreau and Vaughn. Favreau is outstanding as the lovable nice-guy loser Mike, giving a deeply funny and even touching performance. Case in point: Mike's ill-advised attempt to leave a message on the answering machine of a hottie he met just a few hours before. As the womanizing Trent, Vaughn exudes star charisma, delivering his lines with flair without falling into cartoonish excess.

Despite its low budget and unknown (at the time) director and cast, "Swingers" became a modest indie hit. Now, a decade after its release, great word-of-mouth buzz has transformed it into a deserving cult classic.

4 out of 5 stars A fair treatise on the random order of Life.......2007-05-12

The turbulence, despair, and despondency of navigating the multiple persons that occupy the space between significant relationships is obvious in this film. Although the production of this movie is fair, the arbitrary chance at play in meeting someone of significance is painfully well-represented here. Although I think this movie gets better with a second view, and it is a possible "sleeper", I would not consider it as part of a "Collector's Series" - seems like a stretch, an overzealous marketing effort.

When the Hulk gets angry, his movie gets good, so you wish he'd get angry more often. Accepting this challenge after the triumphant <I>Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon</I>, director Ang Lee has created an ambitious film, based on the Marvel comic created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, that succeeds as a cautionary tale about mad science and traumatized children coping with legacies of pain. That's the Hulk's problem: After accidental exposure to gamma radiation, scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) turns into the huge, green, and indestructible Hulk when provoked, and repressed childhood memories fuel his fury. Hobbled by the obligatory "origin story" (to acquaint neophytes with the character's Jekyll-and-Hyde-ish fate), there's room for little else in a sluggish film that struggles to reconcile Lee's stylistic flair (evident in his visual interpretation of comic-book technique) with the razzle-dazzle of a megabudget franchise. What's good is good (Jennifer Connelly essentially echoes her role from <I>A Beautiful Mind</I>, and Nick Nolte is righteously tormented as Banner's father), but the movie's schizoid intentions remain largely unclear. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Though the movie did not gross as much as Universal had originally hoped, this HD DVD is still a winner! Even if you do not appreciate the film, it makes wonderful HD DVD demo material! Personally I liked the film, but I give the film itself a 7, story is 6.5, the picture is a 10 and the sound is a 9. Ang Lee (the director) did a good job using multiple scenes on a single screen using comic book templates! I loved to see Hulk Smash all the tanks in the dessert in pure HD! Batman can't be the only Superhero in you HD DVD collection and Hulk is a lot better than Superman!

I was really looking forward to this movie. I love the Hulk and after the success of X-Men and Spiderman (two excellent comic book movies) I was begining to think Marvel wouldn't let them put out a bad movie. Well, they did. It drags, the plot is incoherent, it just plain sucks. It may be the perfect cure for insomnia...

The hulk was decent to good movie. I didn't like how they split the Screen in so many scenes. There is a very catchy story line and a very cute girl. I'd really give it a a 3.5. Sorry I have to keep it short.Spider-Man / Spider-Man 2 (Full Screen Special Editions)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2007-05-24

hulk is definitely one of the most under rated films of the past few years. dont watch it expecting a summer action movie. rather expect to see a intelligent, well written film that draws on some of the better human aspects of the comic. for this reason, the hulk does not get as much screen time as the other characters. but when he does appear, its a real treat! in hindsight, it shouldnt have been marketed as a summer blockbuster.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Family There Is.......2006-03-21

I think that for a first time writer/director Vanessa did a great job. The story is based on her real family to some extent and the town she grew up in, which is VERY similar to the film and the movie was filmed there as well. It's a movie about family like nobody could ever imagine. This family is real, and i know them all because they are my family as well. Others say this family is impossible to exist but THEY DO......slightly less dramatic but its all there. I think it's great.

1 out of 5 stars Kiss Mah Butt!.......2006-03-08

No, I'm not a kid, but this movie was so bad that I actually wanted to throw it in our driveway and run it over about 60 times, or at least until it was nothing but granules of sand. Horrible story of a family full of shallow creeps played by shallow creeps. I'd rather watch a Police Academy film festival or Ernest Does Dallas than this...thing. Italians everywhere should be offended, but if you happen to have taste, you should be too, race, religion, or creed notwithstanding. It's an equal opportunity vomit fest.

1 out of 5 stars I Agree with "Unwatchable.".......2006-01-30

Horrible family you care nothing for, and nobody you'd want in your own, and that's saying a lot since every family on earth is dysfunctional. Even the nutty grandmother makes you want to slap her. Hell, I really want to slap everyone on the cast, crew, and the writers. I bought this for 5 bucks, and it wasn't worth 5 cents. These people are unsympathetic, unbelievable, and totally made up. The women wear too much eye-liner and spend most of the film rolling their eyes at each other and showing their midriffs. I bought the movie because of Johnathan Schaech (based--okay--on his pretty face and his presence in That Thing You Do), but he's not even in it that much. He's better looking than all the girls in it too--including the phony poser lesbian with the fabulous midriff when Alyssa dumps her. I fast forwarded through this after the first half, pausing occasionally to hear dialogue that made Dumb and Dumber look like Hemingway.

In summation, if you like this movie, you have been dumbed down by the evil Hollywood machine, and I suggest you check out good foreign films like A Good Marriage and beautiful scandals like Valmont immediately. There is no excuse for liking unmoving, plastic dreck of this nature.

1 out of 5 stars Unwatchable.......2006-01-23

Character studies of dysfunctional families is a fairly common comedy device. However, in most such efforts, there are enough likable traits to counterbalance the unlikeable ones. We found no redeeming qualities in any of the major characters. Even the bride (who is supposed to carry the film) seemed fake and unlikeable. We watched about 20 minutes of this DVD and ditched it in favor of something else. For a much better "quirky family" movie, wait for "The Family Stone" to come out on DVD.

3 out of 5 stars Kiss the Bride will make you want to pucker up.......2005-07-29

An Italian family prepares for an upcoming wedding. The recipe for disaster: 3 fighting sisters, 2 family squabbles, 1 ex-boyfriend and a partridge in a pear tree. Add a splash of Italian culture to the subplot and stew. This movie is equal parts trite and entertaining, but the cast is surprisingly good with standout performances by Jonathan Schaech and Talia Shire. In a not-so-clever twist, one sister brings home her lesbian lover (Alyssa Milano) simply for the shock value. By the end of the film, the outsider shows everyone who's the boss. -Cynthia Gunnells, CeleGAYtions

5 out of 5 stars ALICIA WITT Knocks It Out Of The Field.......2005-07-21

I agree, this isn't the best movie ever made, but Alicia Witt carries this movie from start to finish. The whole idea of Harvey Fierstein being her mentor really works for me & she owns the role of Claire Goldstein. And with Elliott Gould & Marlo Thomas as your parents, what more could you ask for? It hits all the right notes.

3 out of 5 stars Play it again.......2005-05-20

This is a good movie. It's not great but sometimes life is like that too. Not all neat and clean but more like something one lives through. I think it's a good story of what happens when you're in love, the other person moves on and you're not ready to let go. If you've never felt that you probably won't get this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Lame, excruciating indie comedy with no laughs.......2004-07-09

Despite the presence of many "name" actors (Marlo Thomas, Elliot Gould, Harvey Fierstein, etc.) this is an embarasssing lame independent film that feels like a student project rather than a professional film. Apparently aiming to be a slice of life comedy, it falls very flat as most of the jokes are dated and extremely unfunny. The tone is very uneven and the setting -- contemporary San Francisco -- is poorly utilized.

"Playing Mona Lisa" is about a recent music conservatory grad, Claire Goldstein (Alicia Witt) is dumped by her boyfriend and goes into a tailspin of depression and bad luck. She's surrounded by "crazy" friends and family, including Harvey Fierstein as her gay piano teacher and parents Marlo Thomas and Elliot Gould. I can't give away any spoilers here because there aren't any -- nothing happens in the course of the film and none of Claire's problems or issues are resolved or even dealt with.

This is the kind of film that is written by someone who is either WAY out of touch with young people today -- someone well over 50 -- or someone from a foreign culture who has no idea how Americans live or act in the 90s. Claire -- a 21 year old college student -- apparently owns her own ROW HOUSE in SAN FRANCISCO...this would be virtually impossible unless her family were multi-millionaires as San Francisco is one of the most expensive housing markets in the US and Claire does not even have a job. Or maybe I have something with the multi-millionaire thing, because her parents live in a huge Victorian mansion on the banks of the San Francisco bay with views of the Golden Gate Bridge (approx. value: $10 million plus).

If it's the filmmakers intent to show the life of a super wealthy princess, that's one thing. But this is supposed to be a story about a down-to-earth, regular girl with normal life problems and a goofy (but normal) family. What wacky planet does the director/screenwriter come from that she does not realize that virtually nobody lives this way? There isn't much of anywhere to go from a premise this completely detached from normality...humor derives from exaggerated real life situations we all can recognize, if you start with an absurd, unworldy premise then there isn't much of any place to go to.

There is plenty to laugh at and find humor in amongst young people in the late 20th century...if you had ever MET any of them. None of the 22 yr olds in "Playing Mona Lisa" have body piercings, tattoos, JOBS, college loans, computers or anything else that I associate with young people that age. In fact the whole tone of the movie seems to come from the early or mid-70s. There are a lot of marijuana and drug references, trying to be cool in a desperate way, and an excruciating scene where Claire's stuffy middle class parents "accidentally" get high....as if the parents of 20-something kids would not themselves have grown up in the era of Woodstock and pot and rock music!!!!

This film has nothing whatever to say about contemporary young women, or the choices/problems that they face in life. It doesn't even have anything to say about the struggle that a classical music student would face in transitioning from music conservatory to professional career in one of the most ruthless and competitive fields of music.

The only remotely interesting thing to comment on here is that Alicia Witt -- who has no gift for comedy or dialogue and utterly fails to carry the film or charm us -- appears to actually be playing her own piano pieces. This is refreshing compared to the many other lame films out there where a talentless actor "fakes" playing. However, if she was selected for the role because of this talent, it was still a mistake. It takes some charisma and personality to head a film, and Ms. Witt is a blank slate.

This is a film to be avoided, even as a rental. Complete waste of your time. BTW: there is some flaw on the DVD that puts captions on the screen at all times, even if you select "no captions".

1 out of 5 stars save your time.......2004-01-15

Please....read the reviews here and thought seeing it was worth a shot. If you like lame dialogue, self-absorbed characters and unamusing dreg, this movie is for you. I much prefer the Alicia Witt of The Sopranos. Oh yes, and I could not cut out the subtitles from the screen.

4 out of 5 stars Not just a regular chick flick.......2004-01-04

My girlfriend rented ths movie. We both had never seen it, ut when I found out Alicia Witt was in it I said sure Rent It. Well the movie actually isnt to bad. It is pretty amusing and Alicia Witt has such a presence it can cause multiple viewings. anway the DVD isnt that great but the movie is Good!

While investigating the mysterious circumstances of a beautiful student's demise, a maverick skydiving instructor finds himself entangled in a murderous conspiracy involving Soviet spies and a lost shipment of gold. Logical it ain't, but this entertainingly daft thriller does offer some good-natured satiric riffs on standard action star conventions. Charlie Sheen (throughout most of the film, this not-especially-heroic hero displays the approximate intelligence of a bag of doorknobs) stars along with Nastassja Kinski in a welcome return after a long absence from the screen. Good fun for adrenaline junkies, with a boffo climax involving a midair escape attempt from a free-falling convertible. Writer David Twohy went on to direct Sheen in the considerably more accomplished <I>The Arrival</I>. <I>--Andrew Wright</I>

Description

Charlie Sheen (THE THREE MUSKETEERS, YOUNG GUNS) delivers fast-paced excitement to this high-flying action-adventure! Sheen stars as Ditch Brodie, a daredevil skydiving instructor who falls hard when a sexy, mysterious beauty (Natassja Kinski) walks through his door looking for a lesson -- and apparently plunges to her death during a parachute jump! Suddenly, Sheen finds himself hurled headlong into a nightmare world of intrigue and deceit -- caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse with the Russian mafia! With pulse-pounding suspense and sensational skydiving, high-speed adventure doesn't move any faster than TERMINAL VELOCITY.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars All aspects exceedingly professional, and outstanding........2007-03-14

TERMINAL VELOCITY, released in 1994, is a movie that has aged
extremely well, except maybe for the KGB and end-of-Cold War
mood that was reminiscent of the era after the Berlin Wall
fell, and a new era was unveiled in the former one-party USSR.

The thrill and action aspects of this film, are as good as any
that the best Bond 007 movies had to offer, no doubt.

The 5.1 audio is phenomenal, as are the crisp, crystal clear
digital sequences on the DVD release.

Probably, it will mostly be the below 21 viewers who will
especially appreciate the extensive aerodrome and airplane
settings and sequences, considering that airplanes, even today
in 2007, are still somewhat exotic, as almost nobody has a
pilot's license, or has a parachute jumping training, for that
matter.

For the movie to show Charlie Sheen and Nastassja Kinski at
their best, in those sequences, brings a valuable commodity to
the finished product, which is its entire dream-like
atmosphere. This is what makes believable the otherwise
impossible turn of events, that favor the 2 protagonists against
failure, and against all odds, at each turn and moment during
the course of the movie.

The musical score is also exceptional, for a movie of this
genre, and is a pleasure througout the 90 minutes.

A last note, is the presence of James Gandolfini, early in his
career, presented as a "bad guy" obviously, yet ... this actor,
despite his later similar role in the Sopranos, is perhaps not
that much of a natural as a bad guy - this being one person's
opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of fun.......2007-01-09

I liked this movie. Even though one of the villans was a little over acted. I've seen it several times and enjoyed it a lot. Charlie Sheen is great. Nastassja Kinski is great also and absolute gorgeous. James Gandolfini is excellent.

1 out of 5 stars Oh - My - Gosh!!!.......2006-12-22

Did the other reviewers watch the same movie I just watched??? This movie is so incredibly bad!!! Please tell me it's supposed to be a comedy. I laughed all the way through because it was so ridiculous.

3 out of 5 stars Great Action, Sub Par Plot= Really Enjoyable B Movie.......2006-11-08

Ok, where to begin. This film is like a mix of James Bond, Mission Impossible, Eraser, and maybe a parody film. I only say this because many of the moments in the film are acted or scripted quite comedically. As far as the overall enjoyability goes, it was a very pleasant action film, filled with action comedy, and thrills.

3 out of 5 stars 1970 Challenger R/T.......2006-04-15

A decent movie ; best part is that the director, D. Sarafian, has Sheen drive a white, 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T as a inside joke or a tribute to Richard Sarafian (dad? uncle? whatever) who directed the classic, Vanishing Point which had, as one? the? star a 1970 white Dodge Challenger R/T. As in Vanishing Point, car gets totaled...nice touch after 25 or so years.

5 out of 5 stars "IF I WAS GAY I COULD GET LAID ON THE SUBWAY.".......2004-07-15

Vince Vaughn is on a roll. I cannot think of a single bad movie he has ever made. "Made" is his very best. He is absolute genius in this spoof on gangster films, but so is everybody else. Jon Favreau plays his straight man, as usual, and is at his laconic best, but check out "Puff Daddy" Combs as some kind of gang leader in New York. Combs almost steals this show. In fact, everybody in every scene steals the show throughout - the fat black guy who is Combs' right hand man, the Scottish drug merchant (the "Red Dragon"), and how about Peter Falk as a smarmy L.A. Mob guy?

This flick has everything, including backstory and character development. Vaughn and Jon played football at Hollywood High but blew the Fairfax game because Jon got caught stealing, but Vince took the heat, so there is a reason for their loyalty to each other. Jon's girlfriend is a stripper who hooks on the side, but Jon refuses to see it. He gets a gig through stripper entrepreneur Falk - go to New York because they need some "strong arm guineas." The plane ride is insane with Vaughn screwing up and breaking every rule set before them. In the Apple he just goes off the deep end in a world of laughs, spoofs, hilarity and laconic irony. In the end, Vaughn's alcohol- and sleep-deprived paranoia saves their lives, and upon return to L.A. the girlfriend is revealed as a coke whore. Jon has a heart of gold whern he "adopts" her beautiful daughter, and Vince now seems to have grown up, just a little.

This is a cult classic. It should be up there with "Old School", "Swingers", "Animal House", "Caddyshack" - you name it.(...)

5 out of 5 stars Favreau rocks.......2003-02-16

I don't know how anyone can rate "Made" at one star. That's just insulting. It's extremely well written, directed and acted. Peter Falk was a great touch. Great cameos and awesome dialogue. Swingers is a great accomplishment for a low budget movie. I think that our mega-budget american directors would really be hard pressed to put together such a complete and well rounded movie... I look forward to anything favreau is envolved in in the future.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Made.......2002-08-31

Gimme a break. Made is hot. I think Favreau did a great job writing, directing and starring. Vaughn is just plain awesome, as always.

Nah, it's not Swingers 2, but that's fine since I didn't really care much for Swingers. I just don't get all the people who are upset that they haven't made sequels to Pulp Fiction, or Swingers, or etc. I happen to like a little creativity and I welcome change.

Made is very original and funny, and I thought it was pretty dramatic too. The DVD is also packed with extra stuff, including genuinely funny outtakes. Favreau should be proud (and I think he is).

4 out of 5 stars A Clever Adult Comedy.......2006-03-04

At last, a clever adult comedy about adult situations.

I found myslef laughing out loud as the different characters went though self discovery and self-disclosure. It was refreshing to see the characters honestly and humorously re-evaluating themselves.

This is worth seeing.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant but trite.......2006-02-01

The movie has a very promising start, with good acting and high production values. The only problem is that about half way through we know exactly what is going to happen at the end. If you don't mind this kind of predictability in movies - you will enjoy PARTNER(S)!
The movie is not earmarked for a gay audience - it is a story with gay elements intended for a straight audience. And therefore it falls between two chairs.
If Jonathan had to do more "gay" things to prove he was in fact gay - the movie would have had more credibility, but I suppose the producers were afraid that might have repelled their prospective straight audiences.
An original feature to the story was the two assistants at the law firm debating straight and gay traits. Very funny.
This DVD is not bad at all - just predictable. NO extra features (just trailers)

1 out of 5 stars Rent Something Good Like Dukes of Hazard Instead..........2006-01-30

I can sum this movie up using 20 words or less. Way too predictable of a story line with potential to be funny but instead falls flat on its face. See, 19 words, however, I didn't completely pan this flick with just one star but instead decided to bump it up to two stars due to the fact that Julie Bowen is smoking hot and provided just enough eye candy to keep me from ripping the DVD right out from the machine and blowing it up with an M80. My advice, take the $4.00 rental fee you would have paid to see this movie and just send it right to me as an advance thank you for saving you the time and frustration of having to sit through this train wreck, or you may want to send me the $50.00 replacement fee you would have been charged from taking out your twelve gage to use this piece of garbage as skeet shooting practice.

4 out of 5 stars Posing.......2005-12-18

'Partner(s)' turns out to be a far better little film than expected. Not that there is anything original about this oft told variation of posing to be something you're not in order to take advantage of career development only to have that posing backfire. But Dave Diamond's script and direction and the presence of an attractive, bubbly and capable cast make this little piece of fluff float.

Tables are turned in a competitive law firm where an important case is to be assigned, a case involving sex discrimination over a gay employee. Dave (Jay Harrington) and Katherine (Julie Bowen), lovers in the past, vie for the assignment that will most assuredly result in being granted full partner ship in the firm. The company involved happens to include a cute young lass Lucy (Brooke Langton) who lives in the same apartment with Dave (Dave happens to room with a gay guy Christopher - Michael Ian Black - but Dave is straight). Lucy eyes Dave but mistakenly thinks Dave is gay, a fact that she feels will help her father's company in the lawsuit if they are represented by a gay lawyer (politics, you know...). Dave goes along with the charade, tells his company he is gay, wins the assignment leaving Katherine jealous, knowing that Dave is NOT gay. The remainder of the story revolves around the cat and mouse game between Dave and Katherine and Dave and Lucy's mutual attraction that interferes with his job. There are many funny side characters who constantly comment on what the gay mind is like. But the story ends well, with the film being a vaguely funny if very superficial view of what being gay is all about.

Not a great film but certainly an entertaining one. Sort of an extended au courant soap opera, it works fairly well on the big screen, largely due to the sustained light touch with which it is delivered. Grady Harp, December 05

4 out of 5 stars Funny Romantic Comedy.......2005-12-17

Very entertaining and funny romantic comedy, plays a bit like a 90 minute version of Friends or Will & Grace but well-shot and many cinematic moments. Acting was unusually strong, and the writing and pacing of the film were just right for the genre.

Description

Side 1: Nightmare Bay - When an underwater photographer is attacked inside a sea cave, she is saved by lifeguard Mitch Buchannon. The account of the attack is misconstrued and overblown by a newspaper reporter, and Mitch and the other Baywatch lifeguards find themselves dealing with a comical yet dangerous situation created by media hype and speculation that there is a "Creature in the Bay." Side 2: River of No Return - Raging rapids match the ocean surf for danger when Mitch heads for California's rugged Gold Country to investigate the death of his prospector uncle. David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Erika Eleniak

4 out of 5 stars "unique" Baywatch episode..........2005-08-11

I used to have a lot of Baywatch's from tv taped on some videos but this is the only one i have now,and it's the actual video as represented here. It's a unique episode in which it's the only one in Baywatch history that features my three favorite blonds on the same episode...that being Pamela Anderson,Nicole Eggert and Erika Eleniak. You see,Erika's last show was this one and it happened to be Pamela's first. This is also Nicole's debut episode. So,thats a little Baywatch trivia i guess. Anyhow, decent story with awesome scenery as it takes place away from the beach (mostly) and is set somewhere on the Sacramento river. It'll make you wanna go camping watching this. The only sour parts of the show for me was Hobie constantly singing that gold miners song (you wanna strangle him after the 2nd time) and the fact that Erika (Shauni) cut her hair at some point and has it short. It should be long like Pamela's!!

3 out of 5 stars The beginning of the end for the REAL Baywatch.......2005-05-05

Season 1 was great, gritty storylines, realistic credible characters and some great music montages. This disc features the Season 2 pilot episode called Nightmare Bay. Gone are Parker Stevenson, Brandon Call and Shawn Weatherly only to be replaced in this episode by Jeremy Jackson as Hobie, Tom McTigue as Harvey and for this episode only Andrea Thompson as Devon Connor. David Hasselhoff, Billy Warlock and Erika Eleniak remain from season 1. This was a good episode in places including a great rescue scene featuring Erika Eleniak (Shauni) saving a young girl from drowning and befriending her and her family. The rest of the show follows a monster in the bay storyline which turns out to be a mini-sub. The second side of this disc features the pilot episode of season 3 - River Of No Return. This episode sees the debut of a whole new cast of characters including David Charvet as Matt Brody, Pamela Denise Anderson as CJ Parker, Nicole Eggert as Summer Quinn, Kelly Slater as Jimmy Slade and Susan Anton as Jackie Quinn. This episode also features the marriage and departure of Eddie (Billy Warlock) & Shauni (Erika Eleniak) after a white water rapids adventure with Mitch, Hobie and CJ. Overall this DVD is one I would recommend, it's really the last parts of Baywatch you'll find before the show really lost any credibility it had and earnt the name Babewatch.

Cast includes: David Hasselhoff as Lt Mitch Buchannon, Billy Warlock as Eddie Kramer, Erika Eleniak as Shauni McClain, Monte Markham as Captain Don Thorpe, Richard Jaeckel as Lt Ben Edwards, Andrea Thompson as Devon Connor, Tom McTigue as Harvey Miller, Pamela Denise Anderson as CJ Parker, David Charvet as Matt Brody, Nicole Eggert as Summer Quinn, Kelly Slater as Jimmy Slade & Susan Anton as Jackie Quinn.

3 out of 5 stars It's not how it was used to be.......2004-10-13

When you think this two episodes (from the 2nd and 3rd Baywatch
season) are the same as when they were broadcasted on television, then you are wrong. This DVD version is different comparing it with the tv-broadcast versions.

Let's begin with the featured SONGS. On this DVD
they replaced the original songs "Get up" (Mike and the Mechanics) for another artist. And "Keep me running" (Noiseworks) has been replaced for also another song.
Why? I don't know, perhaps the music-rights for DVD-customers
use was too high, so they used other artists.
Another point is EDITING. On this DVD the edit crew cut off
all the fadeins/fadeouts from each scene. So, the sound
doesn't fade away slowly, but very rough.

Also, many original CASTMEMBERS from the first season (1989/1990) are being replaced by other actors. So, it's not how it used to be. Brandon Call (Hobie - season 1) is not the same as Jeremy Jackson (Hobie - season 2). You'll also miss strong actors like Parker Stevenson, Michael McManus, Holly Gagnier. It seems like they tried to reborn the show, but the classic Baywatch fans (from the first season - 1989), know better, "Nightmare Bay" and "River of no return" are not how
Baywatch was used to be.

If you would purchase some classic Baywatch-episodes, that are how Baywatch was used to be, check www.freerecordshop.nl for the Baywatch DVD Boxset. This box has 3 DVD's (region 2-code) with the following classic episodes:

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2003-10-21

Good DVD TV Show. This DVD was good I liked it because David Charvet, Jeremy Jackson, Nicole Eggert, and Pamela Anderson were in it. David Charvet and Jeremy Jackson are so hot! David has great everything: hair, face, body, abs, voice. Jeremy is still young in this show but as he got older he became a hunk. He has great everything too: face, body, abs, voice. Nicole Eggert and Pam Anderson are hot too. Nicole and Pam are hot back in the day in this DVD. They are older now and are sure showing it they are not as appealing these days. I must say that Pam sure does have great big ones...Being a teen guy I know Baywatch having seen it over the past few years on the spike t.v. channel.
