Screenwriter William Goldman's novel <I>The Princess Bride</I> earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story.

And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity...

The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook. <I>--Sam Sutherland</I>

5 out of 5 stars One of the best films I've seen........2007-05-24

Simply put, this is one of the most clever, witty, and entertaining films I've ever seen. It's one that will always have a place of honor in my collection; it's more like a stage show than a full scale cinematic production, but that fact adds to it's charm I think.

This is one of those films that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, young and old alike. I grew up on this film, and now as an adult, I enjoy some of the more subtle comedy on an entirely different level than when I was younger, and it never loses it's appeal.

5 out of 5 stars A special edition with more than a new cover!.......2007-05-23

Princess Bride is a classic, a favorite movie of many. And this special edition is what a good Princess Bride fan is probably looking for. The home footage taken by cast members during the filming, the little tour guide book by "Fezzik", and the additional commentaries add even more magic to the movie. Did you know Andre kept Robin Penn warm by covering her whole head with his hand? It's great.

4 out of 5 stars Tremendous Fun for the Family...........2007-05-21

This film is so creative and entertaining. You will get caught up in the romance, adventure, and humor that has made this film famous. You will be quoting this film for years. It is definitely a must-see film. There is no hidden depth to it, but if you are out for entertainment, fun, and laughter this is a film you can count on. "As you wish!"

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story!.......2007-05-12

This movie is a lot of fun. The story is entertaining, the acting is very good, and the premise - the visualization of a book being read by a grandfather to his sick grandson - is terrific. We watch an imaginary topic come to life. Mandy Patinkin is great!

<I>Annie Hall</I> is one of the truest, most bittersweet romances on film. In it, Allen plays a thinly disguised version of himself: Alvy Singer, a successful--if neurotic--television comedian living in Manhattan. Annie (the wholesomely luminous Dianne Keaton) is a Midwestern transplant who dabbles in photography and sings in small clubs. When the two meet, the sparks are immediate--if repressed. Alone in her apartment for the first time, Alvy and Annie navigate a minefield of self-conscious "is-this-person-someone-I'd-want-to-get-involved-with?" conversation. As they speak, subtitles flash their unspoken thoughts: the likes of "I'm not smart enough for him" and "I sound like a jerk." Despite all their caution, they connect, and we're swept up in the flush of their new romance. Allen's antic sensibility shines here in a series of flashbacks to Alvy's childhood, growing up, quite literally, under a rumbling roller coaster. His boisterous Jewish family's dinner table shares a split screen with the WASP-y Hall's tight-lipped holiday table, one Alvy has joined for the first time. His position as outsider is uncontestable he looks down the table and sizes up Annie's "Grammy Hall" as "a classic Jew-hater." <P> The relationship arcs, as does Annie's growing desire for independence. It quickly becomes clear that the two are on separate tracks, as what was once endearing becomes annoying. Annie Hall embraces Allen's central themes--his love affair with New York (and hatred of Los Angeles), how impossible relationships are, and his fear of death. But their balance is just right, the chemistry between Allen's worry-wart Alvy and Keaton's gangly, loopy Annie is one of the screen's best pairings. It couldn't be more engaging. <I>--Susan Benson</I>

    Description

Considered to be "Woody Allen's breakthrough movie" (Time), Annie Hall won* four OscarsÂ(r), including Best Picture, and established Allen as the premier auteur filmmaker. Thought by many critics to be Allen's magnum opus, Annie Hall confirmed that he had, "completed the journey from comic to humorist, from comedy writer to wit [and] from inventive moviemaker to creative artist" (Saturday Review). Alvy Singer (Allen) is one of Manhattan's most brilliant comedians, but when it comes to romance, his delivery needs a little work. Introduced byhis best friend, Rob (Tony Roberts), Alvy falls in love with the ditzy but delightful nightclub singer, Annie Hall (Diane Keaton). When his own insecurities sabotage the affair, Annie is forced to leave Alvy for a new lifeand lover (Paul Simon)in Los Angeles. Knowing he may have lost Annie forever, Alvy's willing to go to any lengthseven driving L.A.'s freewaysto recapture the only thing that ever mattered'true love. *1977: Picture; Actress (Keaton); Director; Original Screenplay

5 out of 5 stars Separating the "Horrible and the Miserable".......2007-06-17

Before 'Borat' Borat - Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (Widescreen Edition) confronted anti-Semitism, and Seinfeld Seinfeld - Season 7 did brilliant comedy about "nothing," 'Annie Hall' said a great deal about a lot of things of varying magnitude in this funny Woody Allen movie masterpiece. Taking place, of course, in New York City, Allen's nearly autobiographical alter ego, Alvy Singer, has an on-again, off-again romance with the titled character (Diane Keaton) who is his soul mate and counterpart to his own labored existence. Episodic to be sure, Allen's directing and co-writing take everything bothersome and makes it into an honest labor of love. (Alvy, too, is a stand-up comic who spars about anything from strained love relationships to Republican politics. Not to mention both have that eloquent obssession with "sex and death".) While Alvy always seems maladjusted, he is unable to cope without Annie who, while from Chippewa Falls, WI, can relate to him and help him through the shipwreck of his nuerotic life.

'Annie Hall' is exceptionally funny. In one scene Annie is relating a dream to Alvy where "Frank Sinatra is suffocating" her. Alvy, quick to psychoanalysis, immediately says that she is suffocating her career as a singer. She counters that her therapist says that it is he who is suffocating her because his last name in Singer. (And by all means psychology gets a comedic thrashing many times.) While thinking aloud on the street, Alvy stops a couple to ask them roughly why they seemed so happy. "Basically, I'm shallow," she confides. "I'm basically shallow, too," he adds. In another scene he talks to his friend (Tony Roberts), where he relates talking to a dinner guest. He talks about the meal and tells of a companion who said, "I had salad. Didjyou?" To which they both debate anti-semitism. There's also a split-screen scene where Alvie and Annie are each talking to their pyschiatrists and the differences are acutely funny. (One should also add that Allen did more in these few minutes than 'Conversations with Other Women' did in a whole movie.) Pet peeves are also confronted to provide creator and audience with plenty of therapeutic laughs.

'Annie Hall' is just delightful fun. Chockful of wit and candor, it is a sustaining comedic classic. (Also with cameo appearances by Shelly Duvall as a 'Rolling Stone' reporter and Paul Simon.)

    5 out of 5 stars One of Woody's Best.......2007-06-11

Annie Hall is one of the best Woody Allen movies out there. It features Dianne Keaton in one of her best performances, and is a thoroughly enjoyable movie with great wit and humor. If you are ever tempted to rent or buy one of the new below average movies put out so often by Hollywood nowadays, rethink the decision and watch this instead. Some great fun and the New York v. Los Angeles debate that is often a basis of Woody' humor, is in great form here. 5 Stars.

5 out of 5 stars A romantic comedy that's actually funny, moving, and original.......2007-06-05

Full of neuroses and classic comedy bits, Woody Allen's Annie Hall is that rare breed of movie: a romantic comedy that's actually funny, moving, and original.

Allen's character, a neurotic standup comic named Alvy Singer, meets free-spirited Annie Hall (played with superb wit and energy by a young Diane Keaton). Their on-again-off-again romance flows throughout the movie leading both of them on a roller coaster of emotions that they both want to stay on and get off of at the same time.

Annie Hall features cameos from several of today's stars, although when Annie Hall was filmed these actors were just dayplayers. It's a veritable who's-who of small parts. Jeff Goldblum as a party guest, Sigourney Weaver as one of Alvy's dates, Beverly D'Angelo as a character in a TV show, Truman Capote as a Truman Capote lookalike, and Christopher Walken as Annie's slightly off-kilter brother. Paul Simon also makes an extended appearance as musician Tony Lacey.

Annie Hall is the first Woody Allen movie I've seen, and now I can't believe I waited this long. If you're going to see one Woody Allen movie, or just one movie, make it Annie Hall. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Allen's genius.......2007-05-22

Annie Hall falls at a crucial juncture of Woody Allen's career - when he was switching from the laugh a minute, slapstick routines of his early films such as 'Take the Money and Run' and 'Bananas' to the more sombre, philosophical treatments of his later works. This film captures the best of both worlds. As a result, I think it is Woody Allen's finest.

From the off, the jokes are teriffic: the movie opens with a typically emotionally fraught Allen addressing the camera direct: 'There's this joke, two Jewish women at a Catskill mountain resort having dinner - one says 'the food here's terrible,' the other says, 'yeah, and such small portions' - and that sums up my view on life'. Annie Hall is Woody Allen's finest diagnosis on love and life. Annie is an endearing character in her men's shirts and ties, the grass smoking temptress who unwittingly draws the intellectually fraught Alvie Singer (Allen )into her seemingly innocent web - 'What, did you live in a Norman Rockwell painting or something?'. The couple poke fun at New York Intellectuals: 'Samuel Beckett - he just doesn't hit me at a gut level' - 'I'd like to hit him at a gut level'. And the transient curve of modern sexual relationships. The intellectual angst of New York against the Hollywood vapid glamour of LA and the West coast. It is a fine movie, packed with many jokes and superb life observations. Worth many a viewing.

4 out of 5 stars The Movie That Started It All!.......2007-05-22

About 15 years ago...I was at one of the local swapmeets in LA...and who did I run across, but Diane Keaton...I went through the usual, should I go say hi to her and tell her what an inspiration she is to our female generation? Instead, I opted to leave her alone and enjoy her day of shopping...but I hope that she understands what an influence she has had on young women, and part of it is because of Annie Hall...she and Annie have shown us that it's ok to be ourselves and be not follow the mainstream "ideal" that Hollywood usually portrays...This movie is funny and sweet and is a good start in watching any Keaton/Allen movie!

This simply irresistible first feature from the Muppets has Kermit the frog going from the swamps to Hollywood to be a star. As he travels and picks up his usual friends (Miss Piggy, Fozzie the Bear), Doc Hopper (Charles Durning) is in pursuit, looking for Kermit to be the spokesman for his frog-leg cuisine. A loose rendition of <I>The Wizard of Oz</I>, the film incorporates the same cagey humor as their breakout syndicated TV series <I>The Muppet Show</I>. This is one of the few times that a human cast (notably Steve Martin, Orson Welles, and Carol Kane) are integrated seamlessly with nonhumans. Worth noting is Paul Williams's score, which includes the Oscar-nominated "The Rainbow Connection." Williams's music, much like Howard Ashman's work on <I>The Little Mermaid</I> and other Disney films, provides more than atmosphere; there's a degree of magic here. Williams did not work on the future Muppet films until <I>A Muppet Christmas Carol</I>. His contributions made these films the best of the Muppet series. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

    Amazon.com

Jim Henson vaulted Kermit, the famous floppy-armed frog, and his Muppet pals to the big screen with this charming 1979 musical adventure. Like the TV show that inspired it, Henson and director James Frawley playfully acknowledge movie clichés and conventions and allow the characters to address the camera in asides, like a Hope and Crosby road film for the 1980s. The ambitious singing frog decides to leave his swamp and conquer Hollywood, gathering a group of friends along the way (Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and more) and bumping into oodles of guest stars making tongue-in-cheek cameos (my favorite is the tip-of-the-hat appearance by Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy). Meanwhile, despicable fast-food king Charles Durning pursues Kermit, hoping to make him the spokesfrog for his Frogs-Legs restaurant franchise. Austin Pendleton costars as Durning's sad sack henchman while guest stars include James Coburn, Dom DeLuise, Madeleine Kahn, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Carol Kane, Cloris Leachman, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, Elliot Gould, Orson Welles, and Big Bird. Paul Williams penned the bouncy, song-filled score. You'll believe a frog can sing! <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

4 out of 5 stars Brings back fond memories.......2007-02-12

Ah, something my children and I can watch together and not drive me insane.

This is the original muppet movie from 1979. I remember seeing it in the theater as a child. My kids like the singing, but get bored with the dialouge. But they are young (18 mo. & 32 mo.), so I am not suprised. I enjoy seeing all the big stars and comedians who took bit parts in this movie.

The only thing I don't like...most kids films with music/singing will have a bonus feature of the music scenes. It's a nice way to see the kids' favorite parts and only takes a few minutes if they want "just one more" show, song, story, etc. This DVD doesn't contain a music scene bonus feature.

Definately worth the money if you are a child from the 70s raising children today.

5 out of 5 stars First entire family enjoyable film........2006-07-17

The film which came out before I was even born! Is one that I enjoyed when I was growing up and also love to watch as an adult and will definitely share with my children one day! One day we'll find it, the rainbow connection that makes this film great for people of any age.

4 out of 5 stars DVD NOT "censored", but "The Muppets Go Hollywood" SHOULD'VE BEEN INCLUDED!.......2006-07-16

Let's clear up some confusion here....the "grasshopper" comment was on the movie soundtrack ONLY. It was NOT in the film. If you listen to the song "I hope that something better comes along" from the soundtrack recording, MOST of the dialog exchange between Rowlf and Kermit prior to the beginning of the song, is DIFFERENT than the movie (not just the "grasshopper" line). The different dialog on the soundtrack was to help make sense of the scene in which the song takes place, for those who hadn't seen the film.
I have an old VHS tape of The Muppet Movie from 1984, and the "grasshopper" line isn't on that either. Nothing was censored for the DVD.

I agree that the Muppets' 1979 TV special "The Muppets Go Hollywood" (which promoted the film's release), SHOULD have been included on this DVD. I'm deducting one star for that ridiculous omission.

5 out of 5 stars Best movie ever.......2006-04-24

This is only best movie ever made. I like all the Jim Hensons I've ever seen but those are nothing compared to this. I like the fact that Big Bird and Steve Martin were in this. It was funny, had oscar-winning rainbow connection and travels across the USA

4 out of 5 stars Review of so-so 50th anniversary DVD of great movie.......2006-04-16

I would have given 3 and 1/2 stars if I could.

I have to agree with the reviewers disappointed with the DVD. The Muppet Movie is such a wonderful movie. Funny, smart, literate, warm...every reason to give it great packaging.

This new edition, unfortunately not only doesn't contain significant new material (Kermit featurette unsatisfying), it robs us of stuff on the previous release!

In the early DVD release, we got James Frawley's test footage. Also, we could choose to run the movie in French with captions in French. Although the words didn't match exactly, it was a great way to boost learning the language, particularly conversational French. In this edition, we have the spoken language only. I recognize that not a lot of people will be disappointed by this, but maybe some will.

The lost material is not enough to keep me from buying The Muppet Movie, but it is enough to make me scan e-bay for the earlier, superior edition.

Whoopi Goldberg (<I>The Color Purple</I>) gives one of her earliest and finest film performances as Terry Doolittle, a computer programmer who unwittingly becomes embroiled in an international espionage scheme, forced to outmaneuver the CIA and KGB in this riotous 1986 Cold War comedy. Doolittle, the outspoken and irreverent employee of an international bank, is working overtime one evening when her terminal receives an encrypted message pleading for help from Jumpin' Jack Flash, code name for a British spy (Jonathan Pryce) trapped in Eastern Europe. At first reluctantly and then audaciously, Doolittle becomes privy to his predicament and essential to his escape while delivering a steady stream of ribald one-liners and witty slapstick—whether it's her Mick Jagger impersonation, police station meltdown, or infamous dress-caught-in-the-paper-shredder escapade at the British Consulate ball. A host of supporting talent includes Annie Potts, Jon Lovitz, Jim Belushi, the late Phil Hartman, and Stephen Collins (who shines as Marty, the mole), yet the film belongs to Whoopi. Though the plot is far-fetched and often flimsy, Penny Marshall (in her directorial debut) gives Goldberg enough latitude to showcase her immense talent in a role she obviously relishes—and audiences will too. Rated R for extreme profanity and mature themes. <I>--Lynn Gibson</I>

    Description

A computer operator (Goldberg) at a bank is plunged into an exciting world of international intrigue, danger and romance when her terminal gets an S.O.S. from "Jumpin' Jack Flash," a British spy stranded in Eastern Europe. She is soon matching wits with the deadliest members of the CIA to the KGB. Jon Lovitz and Jim Belushi co-star in this suspenseful, fast-paced and murderously funny comedy.

3 out of 5 stars Movie's a stretch, but ya gotta love Whoopi.......2007-04-01

Whoopi Goldberg is one of those people who could make me laugh just reading the phone book. I always enjoy watching her no matter what she's up to.

So, I definitely got a kick out of Jumpin' Jack Flash, even though the storyline is pretty unbelievable and the romantic element kind of tacked on perfunctorily. There are a bunch of fun bits that keep the movie entertaining, but the story line is really just something to hang Whoopi's immense talent upon. Fun but flawed.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Whoopi.......2007-01-10

Great movie....you fall in love with the character that Whoopi is trying to save. It's classic Whoopi humor.....I love the slippers.

<I>Joe Versus the Volcano</I> is a true early-1990s cult film. This fantasy-comedy was the first pairing of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, yet it polarizes viewers like a <I>Blue Velvet</I> or <I>Happiness</I>. As the only directorial effort from John Patrick Shanley (the Oscar-winning writer of <I>Moonstruck</I>), it is something special, and it's hard to resist the film's feather-light heart tugging. Joe Banks is having the life sucked out of him at a dead-end job. Miserable in his gray surroundings with stark fluorescent lighting, Joe dreams of being brave again. A visit to the doctor reveals that he has a "brain cloud." It's fatal, but he'll be fine for a few more months. An eccentric millionaire, Samuel Harvey Graynamore (Lloyd Bridges), hears of Joe's predicament and comes to him with a proposal: The people of the Pacific island of Waponi Woo need a human sacrifice to appease their gods. Why not live like a king for a few weeks, then throw yourself into a volcano? (Graynamore needs a sacrificial victim to offer in exchange for permission to mine the island for a rare mineral.) Joe accepts Graynamore's lavish proposal and on his journey meets three romantic possibilities (all played by Ryan). Joe embraces life; so does the movie. It's packed with smile-inducing supporting performances by Bridges, Ossie Davis, Robert Stack, and Dan Hedaya; playful songs ("Sixteen Tons," "Ol' Man River," Presley's version of "Blue Moon"); and amusing scenes (such as Joe buying luggage). Add the daring, imaginative production design of Bo Welch (<I>Edward Scissorhands</I>), Hanks and Ryan's chemistry, and Georges Delerue's romantic music and you have a film to fall for. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

    Description

Laughs erupt when Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan fall in love and fall in lava in Joe Versus the Volcano, a colorful, stylish laughquake written and directed by Moonstruck Oscar winner John Patrick Shanley. As Joe, Hanks adds to his phenomenal string of successes that includes, Splash, Big and Turner & Hooch. And Meg Ryan follows up her starmaking When Harry Met Sally...with three roles, playing each of the women in Joe's life. When we first meet Joe, he has the white-color blues. Every day is Monday, the boss is always in a bad mood and the cumulative stresses convince Joe he has a terminal condition called a "brain cloud." So when a zany jillionaire pops up and offers him a fleeting taste of the good life, Joe leaps at the chance. All he must do in return is leap into a volcano. But funny things happen on the way from the urban isle of Manhattan to the remote tropical isle of Waponi Woo... Out of the corporate frying pan. Into the fire. Is Joes doomed to be the last of the red-hot lovers? Not if the forces of courage, love and comedy have their way.<P><b>DVD Features:</b>

5 out of 5 stars the best of Tom and Meg!.......2007-05-27

oh. how I love this film! Joe is told by his doctor (a quack I might add) that he has a rare disease that will kill him in 6 months. so he decides (via being bribed) to go toss himself into a volcano in exchange for a vacation, and loads of fun. but what he didn't expect to find along the way was Love! and Meg ryan is Ultra Cute in this film and tom hanks is Hilarious and as always very comical in his acting (I laugh every time i watch him being diagnosed with his "New Disease" and then quitting his job! what hilarity buy this film you will not regret it! great for family friends and anyone else! its also cool seeing meg ryan as a redhead blonde and brunette! this movie is a classic like Big!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite movie.......2007-04-07

This movie has become my favorite movie of all time. I have given it a rating of E, which is the highest that I will give to a movie or book. To receive this rating, there has to be substance, meaning, consistency of story and plot, depth, and it must be unforgettable.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants not just entertainment, but a challenge to find the messages this movie is saying to each viewer. There is a connectivity throughout the movie that makes it well worth viewing several times to pick out. I will not go into details, for that would make it too easy and spoil the fun to be had in searching. They are there, words, moments of insight, pictures, and ideas. They are there, find them, and enjoy.

I think the choice of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan was the best choice for this movie. Both do very creditable acting. There is also a lot of frisson between these two characters which adds immeasurably to this movie.

One of the things that you will find in this movie is what simple love is and how important it is. By simple love I mean the power of the touch of hands, the giving of oneself to keep another safe and well, the look within the eyes that says "I care for you". These are all simple things, but powerful too. Hence, their meaning comes across powerfully within the framework of this movie.

I have seen this movie several times and I am still seeing things that connect throughout the movie. This makes it more fun to watch time and again, because you always will find something new missed before. Spielberg is an excellent director and he knows how to tell a story. The story presented in Joe vs the Volcano is done extremely well in this movie. There is much more to it within the movie than just the interplay of the two main characters. In addition, the music adds a depth to this, a surprising depth. I have tried to find the sound track and it is not available. Only 3500 CD's were made and these are gone to those who likewise found it to be something worth keeping.

There are unforgettable scenes throughout the movie too. One in particular I always see in my mind and thoughts. Tom Hanks (Joe)and Meg Ryan are on a raft after the sail boat that Meg was captain of sunk in a storm. Meg suffered a blow to the head and is unconscious so Joe gives her water to keep her well, denying any for himself because he does not know when they will be rescued. About the third night he sees the moon rise. At one point he struggles to stand and it then appears he is holding the moon up with his hands. It is touching, an unforgettable scene. Joe then says:
"Lord, who's name I do not know,
I Thank you for my life.
    I forgot... just how big...
    Thank you for my life."

My recommendation is to not miss this movie. It is worth the price, and then some, I believe sincerely. You will not forget it, you will find the movie refreshing everytime you see it. And you will find a smile or two on your face, and maybe a tear or two as you understand all the things this movis is saying to you.

    Joe

    4 out of 5 stars Just a fun movie.......2007-01-10

I missed it in the movies, but after seeing it it on STARS, I knnew I had to have it in my collection !!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Fairy Tail for Grownups.......2006-12-15

Stuck in the world of the corporate grind ... not sure how to break free ... not sure you can? Well, this wonderful little movie might just inspire you to FIND a way to break out of the "eternal gray" and create a wonderful life for yourself. And even if it doesn't ... it's a lot of fun.

4 out of 5 stars This film works best as a rainy-day appetizer.......2006-12-06

This is a artsy, stylized movie, full of quirky humor and subtle satire. If you love "The Princess Bride" and/or "O! Brother, Where Art Thou?", then you will understand this film. The characterization of personality archetypes (in English, he makes fun of odd people that we all know) is what sticks the most with me, along with Elvis signing Blue Moon and the large moonrise on the ocean.

It has enough adventure in it so that it is not strictly a chick flick, but it strikes a nice balance. I think this is the first paring-up of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

This film works best as a rainy-day appetizer, with hot cocoa and summer sausage. I recommend seeing it between 3:30 and 5:45 at the latest.

A gripping true crime yarn, a juicy slice of overheated New York atmosphere, and a splendid showcase for its young actors, Dog Day Afternoon is a minor classic of the 1970s. The opening montage of New York street life (set to Elton John's lazy "Amoreena") establishes the oppressive mood of a scorching afternoon in the city with such immediacy that you can almost smell the garbage baking in the sun and the water from the hydrants evaporating from the sizzling pavement. Al Pacino plays Sonny, who, along with his rather slow-witted accomplice Sal (John Cazale, familiar as Pacino's Godfather brother Fredo), holds hostages after a botched a bank robbery. Sonny finds himself transformed into a rebel celebrity when his standoff with police (including lead negotiator Charles Durning) is covered live on local television. The movie doesn't appear to be about anything in particular, but it really conveys the feel of wild and unpredictable events unfolding before your eyes, and the whole picture is so convincing and involving that you're glued to the screen. An Oscar winner for original screenplay, Dog Day Afternoon was also nominated for best picture, actor, supporting actor (Chris Sarandon, as a surprise figure from Sonny's past), editing, and director (Sidney Lumet of Serpico, Prince of the City, The Verdict, and Running on Empty). --Jim Emerson

This Sidney Lumet classic is the third in the trio of classic Al Pacino movies I love dearly and never get tired of watching. The other two are "Serpico", (which was also directed by Lumet), and "Scarface".

One hot sunny August afternoon in 1972, three bumbling and inept robbers attempt to take the First Brooklyn Savings Bank. Things start to go wrong within the first ten minutes of them entering the bank and in no time at all, the cops are out front, the media is out front and a noisy crowd gathers out front for good measure. A robbery that should have taken no longer than 10 minutes turns into an all-night sideshow and the hottest thing on live TV.

Pacino plays Sonny Wortzik, the leader of the two-man gang (there was a third man but he couldn't handle the pressure and scampered off less than five minutes into the raid) that needs the money for, among other things that are never made clear, Sonny's boyfriend (played by Chris Sarandon) who needs a sex change operation. Sonny and Sal (played by John Cazale) seem totally lost as their whole plan just seems to disintegrate around them. The action switches between the growing claustrophobia within the bank, where Sonny and Sal are holding bank employees hostage and the mayhem outside led by the corpulent and co-operative chief police negotiator, played by Charles Durning.

At times the movie is tense action thriller, at times comedy and at times pure farce. "Attica! Attica!" Sonny screams outside the bank at one point, alluding to an incident earlier that year at the infamous maximum-security prison where some prisoners had apparently been killed. The crowd goes wild, roaring their support for someone who has somehow become something of a local celebrity. At another point, Sonny asks to see his wife and kids. It's the boyfriend who's eventually brought by police escort. At another point we see gay activists waving banners of support. Brave people, considering this was New York City in 1972, just 3 years after Stonewall.

The movie earned six Oscar nominations in 1975 including Best Picture, Best Screenplay and one apiece for Al Pacino (his fourth) and Chris Sarandon. The movie is based on a magazine article by P. F. Kluge & Thomas Moore.

That day, August 22nd, 1972 will go down in history as one the 250 cops, the F.B.I., the 8 hostages and the 2,000 Brooklyn onlookers will never forget. You won't forget it either, once you've seen this unmissable Pacino classic.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Films Ever Made.......2007-02-17

"Dog Day Afternoon" is a great film that wowed me the first time I saw it and continues to be a great film that I enjoy even after my 4th time watching it. We all know what a fine actor Al Pacino is; he usually gets the most raves for his performances in "The Godfather" and "Scarface"
but I think that this film features the best Pacino performance. Nothing against Tony Montana, but Pacino's Sonny is such a great character that could've been played so many ways and Pacino does it just right. Sonny is naive, nervous, flamboyant, tough, and, occasionally, smart. The movie also happens to feature one of the most famous one-word lines of dialogue in cinema..."Attica!" The movie is directed by Sidney Lumet, a fine director whose credits include 'Serpico,' 'Network,' '12 Angry Men,' and more recently 'Find Me Guilty.' DDA is, in my opinion, his masterpiece. An energetic thrill-ride that truly deserves to be ranked as one of the finest movies ever made. Sonny, his friend Sal (John Cazale, who was killed Pacino in "The Godfather Pt.II"), and another accomplice barge into a small New York bank and try to rob it. It's established quickly how naive and unprepared the men are, especially after the third accomplice leaves right after the guns are revealed. Pretty soon, there's a phone call at the bank for Sonny and he realizes there are already police across the street. Within minutes, the scene becomes a media circus. Hundreds of cops, the FBI, the media, and onlookers have crowded around the bank leaving Sonny and Sal to hold the female bank tellers and the manager hostage. As Sonny desperately tries to get out of the jam and the cops slowly move in on him we, as the audience, realize...We're going to be in this bank for 124 minutes of film. I'm not fond of movies like this, movies that are set up almost as a stage play because it has only one setting. Oddly enough though, "Dog Day Afternoon" is incredibly entertaining throughout. Now, I'm willing to bet, most of the detailed reviews on this site reveal why Sonny is actually robbing the bank. I, myself, knew this little tidbit before watching it the first time. Watching the film with a friend recently (a friend who had never heard of the film), when the not-so-big revelation came he was shocked and surprised. He basically has the same reaction the cops, the media, and the onlookers have. Having said that, I highly recommend that you try not to know Sonny's reason for robbing the bank before you watch this. If Al Pacino had not already made his name with other films, "Dog Day Afternoon" would have made him a star. He proves here (especially when you look at his other performances) what a complete and total actor this man is. Never for a second is Sonny not completely believable in every aspect of the word. It's not a one-man show and there is a lot of great supporting work here, especially by Cazale and a brief appearance by Chris Sarandon. I also think that I wouldn't be saying anything new or saying anything false when I say this very well could be the best, most unique, bank robbery movie ever made. Even the hostages aren't cardboard cliches. Have there ever been cooler bank robbery hostages in a movie? Do yourself a favor, as a lover of cinema, and see "Dog Day Afternoon." You will not be disappointed.

    GRADE: A

    5 out of 5 stars Pacino's best performance!.......2006-05-28

Though brilliant in The Godfather (I and II), Pacino's best performance of his career was in this film. In the Godfather films, there was a lot of talent all around him. In Dog Day Afternoon, Pacino carried the movie. Admittedly, he did have some help from John Cazale, who was terrific though understated.

It's a great movie; a true classic. There have been lots of other movies about bank heists and hostage situations, but this is the king of them all.

5 out of 5 stars Based on a true story........2006-05-17

Al Pacino stars in this drama/comedy film directed by Sidney Lumet, the film is about Sonny (Pacino) who along with his partner Sal decide to rob a bank in one hot summer day in Brooklyn N.Y. but soon things go terribly wrong when its found out that all the money has been removed before his arrival so he kidnaps the bank employees and soon the whole thing turns into an absurd and huge media circus as newsreporters and what seems like the whole police station has arrived along with a crowd of people to see whats going on.
Al Pacino's performance is absolutely flawless and terrific he should have won an oscar for this role instead of Scent of a woman, Sonny's character is full of personality and charm who also happens to be hillarious and when he loses control of the heist situation you just can't help but feel sory for him.
His partner is a bit slow and doesn't seem to comprihend the situation that he is in, his male lover also arrives at the scene and soon things take another turn you'll just have to watch what happens. The film was also realistic as it is known that Sonny wasn't going to get away with it and nobody would have expected that. If you like this film then I also suggest you check out these other Pacino films Serpico, Scarface ,Donnie Brasco and Heat.

The brief 1980s mania surrounding "the Coreys" peaked with <I>License to Drive</I>, a modest but surprisingly still enjoyable adventure comedy. Les (Corey Haim, <I>Lucas</I>) has a chance to date his dream girl, Mercedes (Heather Graham, <I>Boogie Nights</I>, in her first significant movie role)--but he's just failed his driving exam. Motivated by a mixture of pride and hormones, he steals his grandfather's Cadillac and heads out on the town with Mercedes for a night that swiftly becomes an escalating series of disasters, made worse by the foolhardy antics of Les' best friend Dean (Corey Feldman, <I>Stand by Me</I>). Despite some egregious '80s fashion disasters (Graham gets the worst of them), <I>License to Drive</I> holds up surprisingly well--it's no work of genius, but it is a solidly made and entertaining teen comedy that's more coherent than most. The depiction of parent-teen relations is fairly honest and particularly well-played by Richard Masur (<I>Risky Business</I>) and Carol Kane (<I>In the Soup</I>) as the parents. The DVD includes a very funny and rambunctious audio commentary track by the screenwriter and director, as well as interviews with the grown-up Coreys. A must-have for fans of '80s nostalgia. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest movie ever..STILL!.......2007-02-17

I watched this movie back in the 80's when I was a kid, and here it is 25 years later and this movie is still the funniest movie of all time. Surprisingly, I actually like most (I won't say all) of the movies the 2 Corey's did in the 80's, but I would say that "The Lost Boys" is my absolute favorite semi-horror flick, and "License to Drive" is my favorite comedy.

4 out of 5 stars Good DVD, absence of subtitles in Language English........2007-01-14

The participation of Corey Haim is spectacular. The story is cool (good entertainment). The absence of subtitles in Language English and in other languages is lamentable.

Wow there are so many parts of this movie i just simply did not remember. But still a great movie, especially with the deleted scenes. They are not up to scratch but i am not holding it against afterall the movie is 18 years old. But still allot of fun to watch.

    5 out of 5 stars These two Corey's, definitely 80's teen idols!.......2006-08-24

This movie is totally an 80's flick, but non the less it always brings back feelings of nestalgia! It brings back memories of being that 16yr old that can't wait to get their license. Both Corey Haim and Corey Feldman are perfect for the role. Even though Corey Haim's character fails the written exam, this teen somehow prevails and the outcome is hilarious! And even though this movie is almost 18yrs old, all teen agers can relate to it! This movie is timeless!!

The idea is clever but the movie can't seem to pull its comic weight: Steve Martin plays a mob informer who is placed in the witness-protection program and doesn't fit into the suburban California life the Feds have picked out for him. Rick Moranis is the FBI agent assigned to protect him. Martin mugs his way through the role of an Italian wise guy from the New York streets, but his performance is never more than an impersonation. The script leaves a lot to be desired, as well. Director Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) brings some gloss to the production, but he can't seem to do much else with the material. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Steve Martin vehicle! Don't miss the gangster and his nerdy FBI handler (Moranis).......2006-01-15

My Blue Heaven is a movie I enjoyed as a kid (when my parents rented it) and have introduced to many of my friends in the ensuing years. If only comedy was still this good! Despite it's PG-13 rating, this movie is truly tam(er) compared to today's top-grossing comedy titles, and it still packs laugh after laugh.

There's no need for a detailed plot summary--Steve Martin is a NY Italian mafia member turned federal witness, so he's undercover in suburban San Diego with Rick Moranis as his straight-edge FBI babysitter (the man has a system for everything, including the eating of pancakes). Martin's monologues and pontifications and brilliant excuses for his petty thefts are worth the price of admission alone. Martin's mafia-cool influence on the nerdy Moranis is also absolutely priceless, full of laughs through-and-through. Joan Cusak gives an excellent performance as the uptight local DA (complete with Army shoes) who butts heads with Martin's petty crimes again and again.

Don't miss out on one of the most underrated and delicious comedy flicks of the 1980's (okay, so it did come out in 1990, but it rings 80's comedy all throughout). The DVD is certainly priced right!

5 out of 5 stars The funny sequel to GOODFELLAS.......2005-12-31

Steve Martin does an excellent work in what I believe to be his best inpersonation so far. My blue heaven could be a sequel for Goodfellas where he could portray Henry Hill (The character played by Ray Liotta) after he got in the witness protection program. This movie is hilarious and one of Steve Martin's best. One of my 10 best comedies but unfortunately largely underated.

4 out of 5 stars Actually, FBI men love this film!.......2005-11-23

My Blue Heaven is Director Herb Ross' fish out of water story of a New York mafioso (Steve Martin) relocated to suburban San Diego under the watchful eye of neurotic FBI agent Rick Moranis.
Martin, a broad actor, is perfectly suited to play the flamboyant ganster trying to adapt to the whitebread wholesomeness of suburbia and Moranis' comedic talents are well-suited to the role, as he and Martin learn from one another.

The film is consistently, continuously side-splittingly funny without ever descending into bad camp. Many critics thought the depiction of mafiosi and witness relocation was over the top but I've read interviews where FBI men involved in the program say this side-splitting tale is the most realistic.
This is an upbeat, cleverly-written, and nicely edited film with a light soundtrack and some subtle dynamics.

Don't miss a chance to put this one in your collection for regular viewings!
