<B><I>The Night Stalker</I></B>
Wisecracking Carl Kolchak (Darren McGavin) is a rumpled news hound plucked from the fast-talking newspaper flicks of the 1940s and dropped into the swinging '70s. What makes the eccentric Kolchak even more unique, however, is his nose for the supernatural, a trait that leaves his editor (Simon Oakland) exasperated and the police less than amused. When he insists that a late-night Las Vegas serial killer (who leaves his victims drained of blood and sporting twin holes in the neck) is a modern-day vampire, he's practically run out of town by the local authorities. Naturally, he stalks the vampire himself, an unlikely Van Helsing armed with a silver cross, a wooden stake, and his ever-present tape recorder and flashbulb camera. Carol Lynley is his understanding girlfriend, and Ralph Meeker, Claude Akins, Kent Smith, and Charles McGraw costar as the Vegas cops and politicians Kolchak systematically alienates with his abrasive charm and smart mouth. Directed by Dan Curtis from a witty script by Richard Matheson, the quirky mix of horror and humor turned <I>The Night Stalker</I> into a ratings sensation that inspired a sequel (<I>The Night Strangler</I>) and a short-lived TV series (<I>Kolchak: The Night Stalker</I>). <I>The X-Files</I> creator Chris Carter acknowledges the show as a major inspiration, and has cast McGavin in a recurring role as a retired X-Files veteran with an acerbic personality and a familiar rumpled wardrobe. Kolchak lives! <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>
<B><I>The Night Strangler</I></B>
<I>The Night Strangler</I> finds down-on-his-luck investigator Carl Kolchak in Seattle, hot on the trail of a serial killer hiding in the underground city beneath the streets, a gas-lit fantasy world frozen in time (L.A.'s famous Bradbury Building--which has also appeared in <I>Blade Runner</I> and <I>DOA</I>--becomes the spooky city's architectural centerpiece). Exotic dancer and medical student Jo Ann Pflug tags along as partner and bait, and the exasperated Simon Oakland returns as Kolchak's harried editor. Genre fans will enjoy the appearances of popular character actors John Carradine, Margaret Hamilton, Wally Cox, and Al Lewis. Noted horror and science fiction author Richard Matheson scripted this meandering, low-key thriller with plenty of humor, which McGavin delivers with deadpan delight. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

THE NIGHT STALKER THE NIGHT STRANGLER
Customer Reviews:
A must see.......2007-06-17
This movie stands up to current films. The acting is good. The make up is not cheesy. Just a good film.
Night Stalker a must watch- Excellent.......2007-04-11
Watched the night stalker when i was a kid, so it bought back some great tv moments. Such a great watch with drama, action and of course many laughs with Darren McGavin. An absolute must watch.
X Files Fan, this was First.......2007-02-08
Dan Curtis, Producer of the Soap Opera DARK SHADOWS, created to television the likes of Carl Kolchak. This character, from a Jeff Rice novel, was played by Darrin McGavin (who later played Mulder's and Murphy Brown's father)who appears in both movies
Curtis made this hack Vegas newspaper reporter into a vampire hunter. It is pure 1973 TV horror, it will hold you, but still safe for the kiddies. Barry Atwater is great as the Vampire. With MASH's Larry Linville as the Medical Examine and Simon Oakland as Tony, Kolchak's editor. This TV movie is the stuff B-rated horror movies are made of.
The sequel the Night Strangler has Kolchak in Seattle searching for a strangler in the underground. Richard (Oscar Goldman from the six Million Dollar man & The Bionic Woman) Anderson as the Strangler and Oakland reprises the role of Tony
This is 35 years old and it still fun to watch these two films on DVD
So X-file fans, watch what Chris Carter had said was one of the inspiration for The X-files, Kolchak The Night Stalker
Bennet Pomerantz AUDIOWORLD
Does not age gracefully.......2007-02-07
I LOVED these shows as a kid. Scared the crap out of me. 30 years later they are like
a bad Love Boat episode with former film stars appearing in bad cameos.
Perhaps your 8 year old needs something to see....
A 70s Cult Classic!!!.......2007-02-06
Before there was X-files and all the rest those sci-fi shows involving the paranormal, we had Carl Kolchak intrepid reporter. The made for tv movies Night Stalker, and the sequel The Night Strangler were ratings blockbusters in their day and were shown over and over on the network and late night Creature Feature's television. The disc contains both episodes and the transfer is very good in my opinion for a 70 telepic. You do get a little fuzz, and some bleed through in some sequences but for the most part it is just great in both audio and video. In Night Stalker, follow Carl through the 70s era Las Vegas as he chases down Yanos Skorzeny a man with a thrist for blood and the nightlife. Carol Lynley as Carl's girlfriend gayle lends a more humanistic side to Carl that we really didn't get to see in the sequel and subsequent follow up series.
The second feature the Night Strangler finds Carl who has since moved on from the bright lights of Vegas to the pacific northwest of Seattle where once again he is on the hunt for someone who is no longer cxonsidered human. Richard Anderson of The Six Million Dollar Man series stars as Dr. Richard Malcom/Dr. Malcom Richards and Darren McGavin really sinks his teeth into the role. For the price you cannot go wrong with this disc if you are fan of the paranormal shows, or the Night Stalker in general. The entire series is available for sale, and the quality is just as good as the first two movies. Carl moves on once again to Chicago and proceeds to chase down the monster of the week. Some reports read that it got tedious for the star and others report that more creative control was wanted by the actor. Either way, sadly the show only lasted one season but the memories will last a lifetime for me. Enjoy!!!

Format: DVD MOVIE
Amazon.com essential video
Hands down, this is the best movie (and was one of the first) to come out of the seemingly endless cycle of disaster movies that dominated box offices during the 1970s. It could even be argued that <I>Titanic</I> owes some of its success to the precedent set by this 1972 blockbuster starring Gene Hackman as a priest who leads a small group of survivors to safety from the bowels of a capsized luxury liner. From its stellar cast to its cheesy, Oscar-winning theme song, <I>The Morning After</I>, the movie has all the ingredients of a popular classic, beginning with a New Year's Eve celebration aboard the ill-fated <I>Poseidon</I> and ending as a pop allegory when the Hackman character becomes a Christ-like martyr. Filmed on spectacular sets where everything down is up and the ship's thick hull points in the direction of salvation, this is "a waterlogged <I>Grand Hotel</I>" (in the words of <I>New Yorker</I> film critic Pauline Kael) that is as entertaining as it is unabashedly brainless. <I>The Poseidon Adventure</I> is filled with performances that rise above the limits of the screenplay. It's also the only movie--unless you count her underwater corpse in <I>Night of the Hunter</I>--that lets Shelley Winters strut her stuff as an aquatic heroine. Who could ask for anything more? <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Customer Reviews:
too much swearing.......2007-06-13
Among all of the swearing and foul language they should have closed the watertight doors. That would have given them more time to get out of the ship. Then the ship is upsidedown yet the catwalk lines up perfectly with the door to the propeller room. I find most of this realy hard to believe.
A classic ............2007-06-12
I saw this movie on television while I was a teenager ... quite an action-packed flick in its day and worth owning just because it was the first one made. I also own both of the remakes and enjoyed seeing how the years altered the basic plot here and there.
Highly recommended for nostalgia's sake ... watch all three Poseidon movies in order on a Sunday afternoon and see the boat always sink and the few passengers survive and escape (differently in each, and in all three equally entertaining). Fascinating! :-)
MORE than a simple disaster/adventure flick.......2007-05-03
Irwin Allen's 1972 "The Poseidon Adventure," based on the book by Paul Gallico, pretty much started the disaster film craze in the 70s (e.g. "Earthquake" and "The Towering Inferno"). Gallico's inspiration for the story reportedly came from his personal experience on a vessel that almost capsized.
THE STORY: After a tidal wave capsizes an ocean liner on New Years Eve, ten survivors struggle to make it to the hull (which is actually the bottom of the ship) to possibly find a way out through the stern. The fact that everything's upside down presents major obstacles.
WHAT WORKS: The picture features a stellar cast. The major protagonist is Gene Hackman (fairly young and with hair) who plays fiery rebel preacher Rev. Scott. Scott looks down on prayer and passive faith while advocating a get-off-your-butt-and-TRY-to-win philosophy. He's at odds with Detective Rogo, played by a fit Ernest Borgnine. They're at each other's throats the entire film because, as Rev. Scott points out, they're two of a kind and Rogo doesn't like what he sees when he looks at Scott.
Both Hackman and Borgnine are nothing short of outstanding in their roles.
Leslie Nielson is perfect in the serious (minor) role of the Captain of the ship. If you don't think Nielson can play a serious role, think again.
One of the definite highlights of the film for red-blooded males is the three scantily-clad damsels in distress: Pamela Sue Martin (i.e. "Nancy Drew"), Stella Stevans and the incredibly lovely Carol Lynley. Be attentive and you'll observe that Pamela's character (Susan) dearly loves Rev. Scott; it's attention to detail like this that makes for great films.
Also on hand are: Red Buttons, Roddy McDowall, Shelly Winters and Eric Shea as Pamela's likable little brother. All the characters are great and you really start to CARE for them.
The sequence where the vessel topples over showing the revelers fall/slide to the ceiling is superb. The sets of the slowly sinking, upside down ship are very realistic.
The score by John Williams is perfect and memorable.
WHAT DOESN'T WORK: I've heard people criticize that some of the dialogue is silly and even campy, but -- c'mon -- we all KNOW people that act and speak just like this (or worse).
COMMENTARY: If all you're looking for is a great disaster/adventure flick you'll definitely get that but, as my title blurb points out, "The Poseidon Adventure" offers much more. At the very heart of the picture is the universal question: Why does a good God allow suffering and tragedy? Rev. Scott is a strong believer in God and His absolute goodness, yet he witnesses unspeakable tragedies and death after death. At the beginning, when all is calm, you'll sense that he's ALREADY a bit on-edge, but as the story progresses and the misfortunes mount his personal anger slowly surfaces and comes to the boiling point. The ending is incredible, potent and tear-inducing: The surviving members are almost homefree and yet another obstacle presents itself. Rev. Scott suddenly turns his entire focus to God Himself and "has it out" while attempting to save the others.
Highly recommended and worthy of repeat viewings.
The Poseidon Adventure.......2007-04-07
Great classic TV film. A must have for all action film fans.
Still Seaworthy.......2007-03-05
For a film nearly thirty years old, Poseidon Adventure is still so effective that it would cause anyone planning to take a cruise to think twice. You probably know the plot--luxury liner capsized by a tidal wave. This synopsis is brought to life with suspense, drama, and sometimes, terrifying reality. One of the most effective cinematic touches is that in nearly every scene, the camera is slowly swaying back and forth to give us a sense that we really are at sea. We follow the journey of ten survivors through the inverted ship to their hopeful rescue--narrowly escaping fires, explosions, and flooding corridors every step of the way. The sets are epic and nothing less than spectacular. Especially the inverted dining room when the Atlantic Ocean comes crashing in, and the engine room which is now a horrifying twisted metal inferno. No, the movie is not perfect, and it is of course starting to look a bit dated. However the suspense and dazzling effects will keep you glued to your seat and you certainly won't be bored. Poseidon Adventure is a true classic. A must see for everyone--not just disaster movie fans.
I'd still watch Titanic over this one anyday - but it's still pretty good.

Customer Reviews:
romantic soap of the 50s.......2007-06-03
no lana turner but whit eleonor parker and mary astor.
romantic nice movie of the 50s
Great sequel to Peyton Place.......2007-02-15
Return to Peyton Place begins with Rosemary Clooney singing the beautiful title song,(she sings it faboulously, and she is featured here because her then husband Jose Ferrer is the director (also see his State Fair..a hilarious mess) the Franz Waxman melody that enhanced so much of the 1957 film, Peyton Place. Then you get a whole new cast, and Carol Lynley, writing a book about Peyton Place with Jeff Chandler. She and he are 'artists", and they have to deal with Mary Astor, a pillar of morality in Peyton Place. Her performance is not to be missed; it is a thorough lesson in screen acting, lessons she shared with Bette Davis years before. If you are curious about how to dominate a low end script, watch Ms. Astor do it.
Then there is Tuesday Weld, who should have been cast as Allison but is Salina Cross and very good in her scenes with Mary Astor. She(Weld) has some harrowing moments in trying to defend herself from charges of lustiness with certain folk in Peyton Place. Eleanor Parker is the new Connie and she is not as good as Lana Turner, but she has moments with Lynley that define a new kind of melodrammatic acting..so over the top Everest would be a mole hill here. . Also, Lucianna Paluzzi is here, with her Italian ways, her accent is so thick she is mostly incomprehensible, and she is driven to ,literally, the heights and depths of despair. Her scenes with Mary Astor are seering moments of sado-masochistic behavior. Bret Halsey, an actor with incredible limitations, is puddy for Mary Astor, who plays his mother. Robert Sterling as Parker's officious husband, and principal of Peyton Place High School, is an unintentional bore and has odd facial expressions and an aversion to E. Parker that makes one wonder.
The ending of Return To Peyton Place is a treasure of great and bad acting..terrible direction, and incredible style and talent, complments of Ms. Astor, on how to do the whole thing and take the film away from everyone.
There's a lurid quality to it all, and this sequel is not as polite as the first Peyton Place(a very good film). This sequel shows Peyton Place to be a really disturbed town within, like Black Rock in Bad Day At Black Rock.
The mentality of all of them is small and pornographic, and Allison's book about the past goings on is the sum total of the town itself, illiterate, mean spirited and low vibration, and Allison is like this herself, splitting infinitives, her verb tenses all mixed up, and her continuous pouting and constant referral in every crisis to sexual repression. The book (written in the film)is, in an odd way, the best the town could ever do in this regard. In this sense Allison is more Peyton Place than anyone else; she is proud of her bad book, and wants to build a new Peyton Place on it.
See this film on DVD, and enjoy all of its craziness. You will not forget Mary Astor. Also check out the talk shopw scene with Lynley and the dubbing of the host by Jose Ferrer..unbelievable, and this man worked with David Lean.
Good follow-up on its own merits.......2007-02-13
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It has a stellar cast & is an engrossing sequel to the original. The plots are interesting & the actors are talented & enjoyable to watch. It isn't fair to compare it to the original. The original was great, but then so is this contribution to the film series. I would recommend it to be watched back-to-back on a sunday afternoon, it would make for a fun marathon. Myself, I'm not at all a fan of sequels, but Carol Lynley, Jeff Chandler, Mary Astor & Brett Halsey deserve kudos for their meat & potatoes performances in this production. I'm very pleased it's finally on DVD.
Classic - Peyton Place.......2006-11-05
If you liked Peyton Place, you will love this movie. Jeff Chandler does a great job portraying "the publisher" of Allison's book as well as her lover for the moment. This also has a variety of things happening in Peyton Place that you will find interesting.
Gossip, Gossip, Gossip.......2005-11-07
It isn't mandatory that you watch Peyton Place before Return To Peyton Place as the actors are different and some of the characters did not reappear in the sequel. I watched both back to back and Return To... was just as glossy, trashy and colourfully slick as its predecessor. With a story like this, taking place in a small town full of characters, there are more than enough stories to interweave. The audio commentary of Sylvia Stoddard is a great supplement to this dvd. (see also The Best of Everything) She related stories about Tuesday Weld, Mary Astor and Grace Metalious among many others. This is a well-produced melodrama and I recommend it on that basis.

Otto Preminger presents The Cardinal, winner of a Golden Globe Best Picture Award and nominated for six 1963 Academy Awards, including Best Director. Typical of Preminger's films, The Cardinal is packed with stars and issues. Tom Tryon, Carol Lynley, Ossie Davis, Burgess Meredith and Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner John Huston are players in a rich storyline embracing interfaith marriage, abortion, racism and war.
Customer Reviews:
Morality wins the day.......2007-05-30
The Cardinal is a gripping portrait of a young man's rise from priest to cardinal overcoming obstacles of faith and politics. Always a rising star the young religious scholar has to face tough choices that test his faith. It is his decision to remain faithful to his vows even at the expense of his pregnant sister and his own personal demons. Despite politics of the Vatican he acheives the ultimate reward for his convictions. He avoids the hypocrisy of the church in matters of belief. He brings honor and honesty to a position that sometimes lowers itself to the least common denominator of expediency. It is a redeeming experience even for those with questionable belief in the church.
The catholic faith and the challenges of the princes of the church .......2007-05-12
Though this is a work of fiction, it is a well researched story on the catholic faith and the trials and tribulations of the catholic priesthood. It provides minute details of the efforts and frustrations of the American cardinals to participate in the election of th Pope owing to distance and constraints on travel and time during a period when travel to Rome took weeks. The film provides a good insight into the training of the priesthood. A must see for those wishing to learn more about the catholic faith.
Classical.......2007-05-12
A classical pre-vatican ll movie which grapples with isssues still faced today abortion, discrimination. The Austrian Church and it's involvement with Nazism is gently handled.
A good moral reminder movie
even christopher reeve was a more convincing priest.......2007-05-05
a huge sprawling overblown epic from director otto preminger that attempts too many story lines over too great a span of time. in the hands of a better director than the heavy-handed preminger, this might have worked better, but i doubt it: the source material probably is just as inflated. characters come in to the story and then disappear; you keep waiting for them to show up again, but they never do. and the lead performance by tom tryon (best remembered as texas john slaughter in a load of disney tv work of the late 50s & early 60s, then subsequently as author of a few good books like "the other") is wooden and unimpressive. i must note two strange cameos: bobby morse, fresh off "how to succeed" on broadway as a vaudevillian of sorts, and silent star great dorothy gish as the title characters mother -- neither is particularly memorable, but the casting of both is! coming as it did just before vatican 2 this could have been a far more fascinating artifact than it actually is.
The Epic That Isn't.......2005-12-28
In employing the central character from Henry Morton Robinson's book as a brush for painting a landscape mural of the 20th century, Otto Preminger attempted too much and consequently accomplished too little.
Preminger's Cardinal-in-the-making is a man who has just too much to do for a character in even such a long movie. [...]
In taking us along on the journey to Cardinal Fermoyle's fate, Preminger seemed compelled to demonstrate to us that the 20th century was awash in conflict between traditional values and a budding sexual revolution, that abortion debate was in our future, that Prohibition came and went, that the Western Hemisphere was earning the right to demand central billing on the world stage, that the Nazis were on the march (and, boy, were they a nasty lot).
In the end, Father/Monseigneur/Cardinal Fermoyle feels more like a tour guide than a man of deep faith who learns first to understand, then humanize, then telegraph that faith to others. One just has that feeling of pushing away from the table after a very big meal but still feeling hungry. We get close, so very close, to the feeling that Fermoyle is a truly remarkable man of faith . . . but the fullness of the sensation remains just out of our grasp.
The fault is primarily Preminger's, but just a wee bit of it might rest with Tom Tryon. While he was generally up to the role, I kept thinking about another tall, dark, handsome actor who perhaps could have pulled a bit more substance from the role: Cary Grant. The scene in which Father Fermoyle holds up his collared garb and decides on the spot to forsake his love of a woman and return to the active priesthood was poorly directed and/or edited. The revelation just sort of swooped in from somehwere off camera and went splat on the screen. By not giving the actor much of a moment with which to work, it called forth more power from an actor than Tryon could produce with his too-inexpressive face. Again, think Grant.
Now -- after all this -- I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Landscape murals are not usually high art, but they can be very colorful and are almost always worth at least one viewing. So it was with this movie. It's a good, old-fashioned story, full of heart and color that simply never should have aspired to be an epic. If we can forgive it for not being one, we might even find it worth watching again.

Bunny Lake is Missing.......2006-03-17
This is a classic movie from 1965 and I loved it then and I still think it is great.
Laurence Olivier's performance as the Scotland Yard Inspector is of course superb, but Noel Coward is great as the outrageous, lecherous landlord. "Bunny Lake is Missng" is one of those movies where you suspect everyone and it keeps you guessing until the end. I highly reccomend it and I hope that the upcoming remake is as good.
Dismaying missing child hoax.......2005-11-05
Otto Preminger deft direction and quality acting performances by the respected Laurence Olivier, Carol Lynley and Keir Dullea helped make the psychologically gripping "Bunny Lake is Missing" a lesser known classic of intrigue.
A young and attractive Carol Lynley playing Ann Lake has recently arrived in England with her 4 year old daughter Bunny. She is moving into an apartment with her nurturing but domineering brother Steven played by Dullea. They've registered the young child for nursery school and Lynley arrives early and is told to leave the child in the day room assured that the school's cook will keep an eye on her.
When Lynley returns to retrieve Bunny we find out that she's disappeared without a trace. Pretty soon the chaotic school full of toddlers is turned upside down at the urging of the crass and obnoxious Dullea who eventually calls the police.
At this point we are treated to the entrance of Olivier playing police Superintendent Newhouse who in a cool level headed manner assumes control of the investigation. In his impeccable acting style Olivier interrogates all the main and peripheral characters in the film. He comes to the conclusion that the upset Lynley might be delusional and imagining the very existence of the child.
The plot thickens as we get to more intimately become acquainted with the characters. We soon realize that there are deeper psychological ramifictions permeating through disappearance of the child. Special mention should be made of the role played by the eminent Noel Coward who is very effective playing the annoying, scurrilous alcoholic writer Horation Wilson, the lecherous landlord of the Lake's apartment.
Common Sense Is Missing.......2005-06-23
You know something is not right about this American brother (Keir Dullea) and sister (Carol Lynley) when they move into a 1960s London flat together. She cries endlessly, they comfort each other too lovingly, and she sits chatting on the bathtub while he's naked in it. But give Otto Preminger his due. The director has cleverly set up the plot and character twists and turns so that just how screwed up they actually are is almost believable. Of course, having an A-list supporting cast certainly helps.
Clive Revill and top-billed Laurence Olivier are the cool detectives who investigate the sister's claim that her child is missing on its first day in school. Mind you, we nor anyone else has seen the little girl; indeed, given the couple's behavior, whether the child exists at all is doubtful. Anna Massey and the incomparable Maritita Hunt operate the school, and no less a personage than the chi-chi playwright Noel Coward shows up as a seedy busybody pervert who voiceovers for the BBC. The casting director gets a gold star for this one.
Preminger is incapable of making a dull movie. His thriller is only slightly dated and has enough suspense and narrative thrust to mitigate the red herrings and occasional overacting. The jazzy score, the widescreen black-and-white cinematography, even the evocative Saul Bass titles (oddly rendered here in small screen), are first rate. The surprise ending only makes sense if you have not been paying attention. A remake is rumored, so try to catch this first DVD transfer to see how they change it. They always do, you know.
Wonderfully dreary.......2005-06-04
If you're in the mood for such things, this movie might interest you, though it's truly a second or third rate thriller and rather aimless. It's a black and white film, set in London and would be a perfect entertainment on a rainy afternoon or evening. Anyway, that's what I like about it. It also has a great supporting cast of aging and aged British character actors. I'd also like to note the excellent score by Paul Glass. The main theme is so lovely and even haunting that I wish it were available on CD.
A very good Panavision print is presented on DVD in anamorphic widescreen, but strangely the main title sequence is in stardard letterboxing and will play as windowboxed on 16X9 TVs. It's about as odd as the film itself.
Still swinging.......2005-03-27
Otto Preminger's "Bunny Lake Is Missing," his last good film and one of the last major black-and-white films to get a wide release, still has a kick to it after 40 years. The story about an American mom in Britain gets going right from the start as Kier Dullea, seeing to two moving men, tell them to wait, as the person moving in might be late. That person turns out to be ingénue Carol Lynley, who is moving into a London flat but who first drops her four-year-old daughter off at a private nursery school. She's in a hurry to meet the movers so she leaves the child (who we haven't seen on the screen) in the care of a cook who, although demonstrating she has some issues with the school management, promises she'll look after the girl until the school opens.
When Lynley returns for the child, she's missing. Soon she rings Kier Dullea who in turn rings Scotland Yard. Arriving shortly at the school, one that no child deserves to be left at for even 15 minutes, is Superintendant Newhouse, played brilliantly by Sir Laurence Olivier.
And the search for the child (is there really one or has she been invented?) heats up, as Lynley and Dullea are involved in the hunt while becoming entangled with an array of eccentric Brits, including Noel Coward, who does a marvelous turn as an alcoholic playwright-mask collector who has a show on the BBC.
The picture is creaky in spots, and some of the dialog (shall one of the characters be addressed as "Miss" or "Mrs.") is quaint, as are some of the attitudes. But it's a nice museum piece--a glimpse back at the very moment when the sixties were heating up and the age of black and white was coming to an end.

This surprisingly absorbing drama, based on Conrad Richter's novel, tells the tale of the re-assimilation of Johnny Butler, kidnapped as a child by Native Americans (in this 1958 film, of course, called Indians), into the "white man's world." Reluctant and unfamiliar with his biological parents (Jessica Tandy and Frank Ferguson), he's befriended by frontiersman Del Hardy (Fess Parker, basically looking handsome and playing his popular image), also raised by the Indians and now an Army man. Johnny also meets and fancies Shenandoe--his aunt and nasty uncle's indentured servant girl, (a positively luminescent Carol Lynley, 16, in her first role), whose family was massacred by another tribe. While this is an action film set in 1764, made in the still politically insensitive 1950s, it manages not to paint stereotypes. But <I>Light in the Forest</I> is, more than anything, a love story. Shenandoe, terrified of Johnny initially, grows to love him. Johnny, burdened by not feeling he belongs in either world, finds solace in Shenandoe's sweet friendship. (Ages 8 and older) <I>--N.F. Mendoza</I>
Description
The year is 1764, when a peace treaty between the Delaware Indians and the British requires that all white captives be returned to their people. Johnny Butler (James MacArthur), kidnapped by the tribe when he was a child and renamed True Son, is forced against his will to return to his white family in Pennsylvania. His escort, frontiersman Del Hardy (Fess Parker) and Shenandoe, a beautiful servant girl (Carol Lynley, in her feature film debut), try to help the boy adjust to his new way of life. But the white man's injustice and cruelty drive him back to the Delawares, where even greater dangers await him!

Aftermath of the French & Indian War.......2006-03-19
I think that this movie was well done and would be good for children to see to help them to understand F&I and life on the frontier.I would like to see it released on DVD.
The Light in the Forest BY: Jesika K........2004-12-23
The movie "The light in the Forest" And the book are absolutly different. I think the movie was alot better cause of all the action. I think the book was okah but not alot of action. In the book Cuylogo couldn't speak good english neither could True Son.
In the movie they spoke english very well. I really liked the movie. True Son meets a girl in the movie by the name as Shannan Doyie. In the book gordie was his brother but in the movie True Son didn't have a brother or any sisters.
The Light in the Forest.......2004-12-23
Here are some ways of telling how the novel and the movie is simular. One way they are simular is because they both have the same settings. Another way they are simular is because they had the same charactors. The last way I think they are simular is because True Son acted the same way in both the novel and the movie. These are some ways the novel and the book are simular.
There are also many ways they are different from each other.
One way they are different from each other is because in the story it said that True Son didn't know how to speak english he only knew how to speak Delaware. Another way they differ from each other is because in the story it said when True Son arrived the first time that his biological mother was sick. They are also different because in the movie True Son and Uncle Wilse got into two fights. The last way they are different is because in the story it never mentioned anything about True Son and Shenandoe falling in love but in the movie it did. Those were some ways they were different.
I really couldn't get into!.......2004-12-23
I really think you shouldn't get the movie. I would rather get the book even though it would be a long or medium book to read. I actually believe that instead of watching the boring movie you should read the novel. Why is because when you read the book it makes you not want to put the book down. But if you watch the movie it will put you right to sleep. Also if you read the book it will have interesting characters that are not even in the movie. The movie is nice but it has different events and characters. Another thing is it doesn't really bring the picture out on how that person should really look. The book and the movie are just like hot and cold-opposites.
The Light In The Forest.......2004-12-23
I have seen the movie and read the book. I liked the book better. The reason is because the movie was not like the book. I liked the book because the book does not have any love scenes in it. The movie has Shenandoe instead of Gordie. And in the book Cuyloga seems younger than he looks in the MOVIE. And Aunt Kate seems nicer in the movie than in the book. I would think that people should watch the movies then read the book.

<I>Flypaper</I> is a curious name for this shaggy-dog film about characters who continually cross paths as their lives careen out of control. Craig Sheffer is the ostensible lead, though his hotheaded, gun-toting criminal is hardly the picture's hero. He kick-starts the story by kidnapping meth lab chemist Lucy Liu, and then hunts down his junkie girlfriend, Sadie Frost, who is now under the care of her crotchety real estate mogul guardian (Robert Loggia). In the very next room is John C. McGinley, cheating on his jealous future bride, Illeana Douglas, with Talisa Soto, a dominatrix in tight leather. The film plays out these threads as if they are destined to intertwine in some improbable climax, but instead they merely crisscross in passing, finally fraying in a soft, anticlimactic conclusion. The performers try to have some fun with their familiar parts, and writer-director Klaus Hoch tosses in a few curve balls (my favorite is the knife sticking out of Sheffer's skull like a topknot, turning the homicidal heist man into a punch-drunk pussycat), but for all his offbeat humor and funky twists, nothing in <I>Flypaper</I> ever sticks. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>
Customer Reviews:
Great movie.......2007-01-20
Unscrupulous Californians will do anything to get their hands on a million bucks in this twisted tale, which intertwines three story lines. Bobby Ray (Craig Sheffer) abducts a meth-lab chemist (Lucy Liu) and sets off to find his druggie girlfriend (Sadie Frost), who's in the custody of her real-estate magnate dad (Robert Loggia) -- a man in danger of being kidnapped. Meanwhile, jealous Laura (Illeana Douglas) must deal with a philandering fiancé.
Fun!.......2006-08-23
Like most people, I've bought this movie because of one or two appealing things it contains. Watching it, though, was a nice surprise. There was lots of scenes where I coundn't stop laughing! Of course, those appealing things were there too but, in the end, the whole was worth much more than that.
INTERESTING !!!!.......2006-04-30
Yes,it borrows the crossed stories structure from Pulp Fiction,so what ? The technique made history and many films have used it without harm whatsoever to their plots/stories.Plus,you get to see Lucy Liu at her sweetest and youngest, with some nudity and sexual scenes. If you?re a fan of this hot asian chick, you?ll go nuts about this movie (I did).
Great Fun.......2005-09-02
I don't know what the Big Bureaucratic Studio's problem is, but it seems that this film, along with equally awesome "Judas' Kiss," has never seen the big screen in this here Republic.
This one bears little resemblance to the plotless, boring, mechanical, gratuitously and senselessly cruel pile of manure titled "Pulp Fiction." "Flypaper" is, of course, a parody of a parody, but, goodness, it celebrates life and, if you watch it closely (as you should when it comes to good complete movies) finds a comical angle in things one is expected to idolize these days (which especially appeals to my sense of humor).
Fun, talented, astoundingly good. I have watched it seven times over the past year, and there are very few movies, less than ten, in the entire history of cinematography, that I can watch more than once.
big kev.......2005-05-05
Awesome movie comparable (although better than) pulp fiction. This film revolves around a hand full of charactors all intertwined in some form or another. Lots of witty one liners and laughs (especially for those that find others misfortunes ammusing). Throw in one of the most bizzarest sex scene you will ever see and you have a film defenatly worth watching.

At once sprawling and intimate, Otto Preminger's coolly observed story of the education of a Catholic cardinal (Tom Tryon) spans 25 years of 20th-century social history, hops from Rome to Boston to Vienna, and confronts abortion, celibacy, and racism along the way. If those issues seem tame today, Preminger turns them into vivid drama in his hero's crisis and triumph of faith. Tryon is rather stolid and stiff, but the supporting cast helps liven scenes: Romy Schneider as a tempting Fräulein, Ossie Davis as an American priest who requests the Vatican take a stand against racism, John Huston's Oscar®-nominated performance as an irascible archbishop. It's a religious epic unlike any other of its time: thoughtful and serious, with a magnificent yet austere sense of composition and a graceful elegance. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>
Customer Reviews:
A Classic.......2007-01-19
This is a classic Catholic movie. I would recommend this movie to everyone. This movie is about the story of a priest who, after facing many difficulties becomes a cardinal. One of the reasons I enjoy this film so much is that portrays priest in such a positive light, which is a rarity in any movie.Even though this movie portrays priests positively, it does not paint an unrealistic all-priests-are-saints type picture either. The story spans several decades, beginning with world war one and ending just towards the end of world war two. The best performance in this film by far is that of John Huston. The film gets off to a slow start, but the ending is well worth the wait. There is some subject matter which might not be totally suitable to small children.
So what happened to Florrie Fermoyle.......2004-12-24
Having seen the Film The Cardinal, I am left wondering what happened to Maggie McNamara character Florrie Fermoyle we see her in the first part of th movie where she has a fight with her sister
then at her nieces 1st birthday party. in the second part of the film she is missing when the mother, brother and niece meet Stephen Fermoyle in new york and at the end where he is made a cardinal.
So what happen to this Character? it bothers me that she disappeared without a trace. In one review here her character is better, I see her as devotedly moral as she followed the morals of her faith.
Underrated Classic.......2004-11-03
This DVD is a brilliant transfer from the original negative and the film itself deserves its place in any top 100 but being a total religious epic it wouldn,t be considered by some, shame though, because its a fantastic drama, full of emotion and along side "Exodus" is Otto Premingers finest work. The novel was considered impossible to film at the time, but despite some alterations the film still grips. Leave your religious views aside for 3 hours and enjoy a masterpiece
Anthological film!.......2004-08-03
This picture is literally overwhelming . Deep , complex and extraordinary well written , The plot is merciless and disturbing . It is about the hidden web of the power ; but it goes too far in its proposal . Tom Tyron gave the rol of his life with this performance . Unforgettable direction , and superb edition and art direction . Sublime photograph and admirable cast . What else can I say about this one hundred stars film?
One masterpiece all the way .
If Forrest Gump had been a priest, he would be Fr. Fermoyle.......2004-06-28
Otto Preminger's The Cardinal was a movie that I hadn't seen in 23 years, since April 12, 1981 to be precise. It was a Palm Sunday, the Space Shuttle Columbia had just gone up on her maiden voyage and another good thing happened that day that made it special, but I'll keep that one to myself. Oh, and I watched it in Spanish translation, but still, The Cardinal left a vivid impression on my mind and I never forgot several of the key scenes: Stephen Fermoyle's (Tom Tryon), handling (mishandling?) of her younger sister's out of wedlock pregnancy, his encounter with good ol'e Irish church politics in Boston, his facing-down racism and KKK terrorism in Georgia, his inner vocational struggle, his experience with Nazi Germany and Austrian ecclesiastical stupor in the eve of the unification with the Third Reich.
Heck, if Forrest Gump had been a priest, he would've been Stephen Fermoyle.
The movie is a collection of vignettes in which Father (then Monsignor, then Bishop, then Cardinal) Fermoyle tests his moral certainties against a cast of characters of ambiguous morality. You may even say that everyone else was human but Fermoyle, who always came out as superhuman yet, paradoxically, frail. Each encounter with evil or moral ambiguity taxed Fermoyle's conscience, and yet he manages to come out of all them triumphant, yet wounded. Each encounter leads him inexorably to a promotion.
The picture is beatifully filmed on location, with great attention to meaningful detail. Note who, for example, when Monsignor Fermoy arrives in Georgia to investigate a church burning, as he exits the bus that brought him to town, is debarking through the back door. If you're not really watching, you'll agree that African-Americans in the segregated South were meant to be invisible but if you notice them, then this detail speaks volumes. More significantly, this scene was made wholecloth for the movie by Director Preminger; it wasn't in the original novel written by Henry Morton Robinson. You learn of this on the second DVD of this 2-disk set, which is all dedicated to the Director Preminger's cinematic trajectory.
This is a delightful movie. It brought back to me lots of good memories. And if there's such thing as "holy pride," through its characters and plot, I can say The Cardinal made me feel proud of being a Catholic even though "pride" in other contexts may be a sin.

Carol Lynley stars as the guileless young woman who becomes the sole heir to eccentric millionaire Wilfrid Hyde-White's fortune in this remake of the Paul Leni silent-film classic. But there's a catch: all the surviving relatives must spend the night in the old mansion. If she dies or is judged insane within the next 12 hours a new heir will be named, and, as if a house full of greedy relatives isn't enough, a homicidal maniac is on the loose, or so informs asylum director Edward Fox, making a dramatic swashbuckling entrance crashing through the library window like a British Zorro. Radley Metzger, best known for his elegant erotic dramas and racy romantic comedies, steps out of the genre that made his name since his debut film <I>Dark Odyssey</I>. With tongue firmly in cheek he refigures the old, dark house farce as a British comedy of manners, nicely capturing the clipped delivery and witty repartee of the drawing-room comedy at the expense of the thrills and chills that make Leni's original so memorable. It's a stylishly handsome and often clever film (the reading of the will, with brash Hyde-White hosting from beyond the grave through the magic of home movies, is an inspired highlight), but it never achieves any tension or terror. Honor Blackman, Wendy Hiller, Daniel Massey, and Olivia Hussey costar. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>
