Something's wrong in the town of Santa Mira, California. At first, Dr. Miles Bennell (Kevin McCarthy) is unconcerned when the townsfolk accuse their loved ones of acting like emotionless imposters. But soon the evidence is overwhelming--Santa Mira has been invaded by alien "pods" that are capable of replicating humans and taking possession of their identities. It's up to McCarthy to spread the word of warning, battling the alien invasion at the risk of his own life. Considered one of the best science fiction films of the 1950s and '60s, this classic paranoid thriller was widely interpreted as a criticism of the McCarthy era (that's Senator Joseph, not actor Kevin), which was characterized by anticommunist witch-hunts and fear of the dreaded blacklist. Some hailed it as an attack on the oppressive power of government as Big Brother. However viewers interpret it, this original 1956 version of <I>Invaders of the Body Snatchers</I> (based on Jack Finney's serialized novel <I>The Body Snatchers</I>) remains a milestone movie in its genre, directed by Don Siegel with an inventive intensity that continues to pack an entertaining wallop. Look closely and you'll find future director Sam Peckinpah (an uncredited cowriter of this film) making a cameo appearance as a meter reader! The DVD release includes an interview with Kevin McCarthy, and for the first time on home video the film is presented in its original 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars A Story About One Man`s Resistance To Collectivism.......2007-06-16

The original version of The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is an absolutely wonderful tale of how one man first tries to save his community from falling into a collectivist society. When this fails he tries save the individual identity of himself and the woman that he loves. Then when she joins the collectivist community he is left with no other alternative but to escape from this community and try to warn those living in other communities.

This is a terrific story that very much captures the political and social environment of the time that this movie was made. I highly recommend The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Also if you enjoy this movie you might want to considering reading 1984 by George Orwell.

5 out of 5 stars A great Cold War classic.......2007-05-16

I bought this DVD intending to teach it in a community college film class, but they didn't have the funds so the class didn't get approved. However, I'm pleased as punch at the chance to own this gem of 50's SF film. To watch this film is to fully understand Cold War paranoia, and the mood of the US during that time. Also, it's one of the few 50's SF films that don't descend into VERY silly "special" effects. Worth watching repeatedly.

4 out of 5 stars Plants are not so "harmless" after all..........2007-04-24

This film horrified audiences in 1956. It still does. The idea of some plant, some pod-based life form assuming the identity of your mother, father, sister or brother, somehow transferring the consciousness of those so transformed into an emotionless shadow of their former selves is a disconcerting notion. This, the original version of the story, is especially creepy. Shot in black and white, the special effects are clumsy by today's standards but they still work. There's just something about fine tendrils reaching out for you while you sleep that gets under your skin (no pun intended). The term "pod people" has become a fixture in the vernacular of the free-spirited and is used to describe those brainwashed, robotic individuals who, promising bliss, blindly follow some bleak, emotionless, sheep-like dogma shared by all the rest of them; relinquishing individual freedoms for the sake of the greater good. These beings want you to conform, they want to absorb you; to make you one of them, to assimilate you for your own sake. Is there anything scarier than being absorbed by the group at the risk of our individualism? This film is as much a satire of social conformity as it is SF horror. It strums those sensitive chords of nonconformity in all of us with a sharp and nasty fingernail. Most of us rail against the absorbers; they scare us to death. In 1956, perhaps the safest way to express the sentiment was to do so metaphorically, with pods and soul-sucking tendrils: "They're after you, you're next!", Kevin McCarthy screams in panic at the close of the film. Just a few years later, though, and thanks to the 60's and all that free thinking, hippy-esque social change that accompanied those years, we could put up a cooler, more direct objection to the absorption, and today's highly tuned refrain is: "Not me, you pod-headed bastard, you." Pod people. Thank Jack Finney and his Collier's serial for the concept and Daniel Mainwaring for the screenplay -- a mere decade after WW II.

5 out of 5 stars Invasion of the Body Snatchers.......2007-04-04

This is the all time, great, original classic. The remake is .......ok
at best. Add this to your classic movie collection.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The First Is Still The Best.......2007-03-29

This is the original, black-and-white version of the movie. Unlike later movies that focus on gore, this one focusses on actual horror--the fear that one day you will wake up and the people you know will not be who they were, and you may not even know they are changed. Based on the book The Body Snatchers, it focusses on a small town doctor who begins hearing people say that their loved ones are not really their loved ones. From there he is introduced to a dead body that is slowly coming alive before his eyes, and a town...well, you should see it for yourself. This is first-rate speculative fiction, and a must-have classic for your film library.

How many movies offer the rare spectacle of a parasailing pink starfish flying over a crowd with a congratulatory pennant clenched between his buttcheeks? And that's only the tip of the iceberg--<I>The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie</I> is a freewheeling goof of a cartoon, full of surreal twists as its diminutive heroes head down a dangerous road to rescue the lost crown of King Neptune. SpongeBob (voiced by Tom Kenny), an arrested adolescent in the mold of Pee-wee Herman, works at a fast-food restaurant that serves something called Krabby Patties (as the restaurant owner is himself a crab, it's not clear what exactly they're made of). His best friend Patrick Starfish (Bill Fagerbakke) lives under a rock and has an IQ in the lower digits. Still, their friendship carries them through many a tight spot as they strive for manliness. Anyone seeking a coherent world will be disappointed; in this undersea adventure, things catch on fire or seem to be surrounded by air whenever it's convenient for a gag. The jokes are often more silly than actually funny, but there's an undeniably energetic joviality to the proceedings. Featuring the voices of Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Tambor, Alec Baldwin, and a fully fleshed appearance by David Hasselhoff. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

1 out of 5 stars Enjoyment of the series is no guarantee you'll enjoy the movie........2007-06-21

I'm an adult and a member of the "Spongebob Underground": adults who enjoy the cartoons but are afraid to say that to other adults. So, I'm a big fan and I've seen most all the cartoon episodes. I think Spongebob was the first great cartoon of the 21st century.

But the movie just doesn't work. It's like they had enough material for a typical 11 minute cartoon and they tried to spread it over an almost-hour-and-a-half movie. It was strained humor, tedious to watch, and mostly mindless slapstick stuff for little kids. The part that the parents enjoy, that the kids don't get, just wasn't there (except for the NPR joke that I thought was hilarious). But one great joke does not a movie make.

I really enjoyed this movie. When I first heard that they were making a Spongebob movie, I didn't want to see it as I imagined that it would just be a really long episode and I couldn't see how they could make the fun last for the length of time a movie lasts. But the story is well thought out and the fun does last the whole movie. I particularly love Spongebob consoling himself with ice cream sundaes when he doesn't get promoted, he and Patrick get a little out of control. The movie really was fun and I can watch it again and again and still laugh. Well worth the effort.

The first feature film to be photographed and projected in the panoramic three-camera Cinerama process, this epic Western is almost as expansive as the West itself, chronicling a pioneering family's triumphs and tragedies in numerous episodes spanning three generations and a half century of westward movement. Divided into five segments directed by veteran Hollywood filmmakers Henry Hathaway, George Marshall, and the legendary John Ford (and including uncredited sequences directed by Richard Thorpe), the film was one of the most ambitious ever made by the venerable MGM studio. Its stellar cast reads like a virtual who's who of Hollywood's biggest stars. Debbie Reynolds plays a sturdy survivor of many pioneering dangers, and the eventual widow of a gambler (Gregory Peck), who is later reunited with her nephew (George Peppard), a Civil War veteran and cavalryman who heads for San Francisco as the transcontinental railroad is being built. Many more characters and stories are woven throughout this epic film, which is dramatically uneven but totally engrossing with its stunning vistas and countless outdoor locations in Illinois, Kentucky, South Dakota, Monument Valley in Arizona, California, Colorado, and elsewhere. --Jeff Shannon

Description

From 1839 to 1889, this epic story follows four generations of a courageous New England farm family as they travel to the fertile Ohio Valley during America's westward expansion. This wondrous historical saga is set against the Louisiana Purchase, the Civil War, buffalo hunters, the Pony Express and the first transcontinental railroad. How The West Was Won won three Academy Awards for Best Screenplay, Best Sound and Best Editing.

1 out of 5 stars What Has Happened to Warners?.......2007-06-05

I didn't buy this, thank goodness, because I was suspicious after being burned by another recent Warner release. The double feature disc of "Kelly's Heroes/Dirty Dozen" has a similar issue with "Dirty Dozen" being incorrectly labeled as being a 16x9 transfer and containing special features that are not actually on the disc. It is also an old master with the Turner logo at the beginning.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Edition.......2007-06-02

This review is about the 2007 'John Wayne Collection' DVD edition of the film. New packaging, same sorry edition contained on other DVD (even Laserdisc) editions and further more the packaging claims "Enhanced for widescreen TVs" not true! The picture quality is terrible. Considering the DVD technology that exists today there is no reason the print couldn't have been cleaned up. Also, the two lines that appear in the middle of the screen (from being filmed in the Cinerama process) could have been eliminated. This is a great classic film that deserves a deluxe DVD edition. I expect more from WB with their long line of quality product not this horrible DVD transfer repackaged for an unsuspecting public! Avoid this until a better DVD edition comes along.

1 out of 5 stars Deceptive Advertising.......2007-05-26

If you have been anxiously awaiting the release of HTWWW in anamorphic wide screen - as I have been - the wait continues. The box for this latest (5/07) release claims the film is "Enhanced for widescreen TV's". Not true!! False advertising. In fact it's merely "letterboxed", and better yet, it's the same transfer used for the Laserdisc version years ago - including the old "Turner Home Video" tag when Turner controlled the MGM library. I'm returning my copy to Amazon for a refund!

1 out of 5 stars Deceptive Cover: Not Enhanced for Widescreen TVs.......2007-05-25

I took a chance on buying this DVD because it said it was enhanced for widescreen TVs, in other words, it was supposed to be anamorphic. It definitely is not. It is non-anamorphic, letterboxed on all 4 sides if you have an HDTV. It is also a very poor print. I took it back to Best Buy, arguing that the advertising on the box is a lie, and they gave me my money back with no questions asked - as if they had heard this story before. A shame, a real classic like this and it receives, once again, shoddy treatment.

3 out of 5 stars A pot-boiler: then and now.......2004-04-11

"How the West Was Won": an incorrigible pot-boiler. Like other "epics" of the 1960s (eg the Alamo) this movie is a product of Hollywood culture. This is an entertainment genre unto itself. As an example of Hollywood's looking-in-on-itself as a source of material, this movie has charm (but not in the way intended). But if you are looking for any trace of history or American culture, look elesewhere. If you are into Rat-pack era (Sinatra, Monro, Kennedy) pseudo-culture, this is a classic.

Alfred Hitchcock's 1956 remake of his own 1934 spy thriller is an exciting event in its own right, with several justifiably famous sequences. James Stewart and Doris Day play American tourists who discover more than they wanted to know about an assassination plot. When their son is kidnapped to keep them quiet, they are caught between concern for him and the terrible secret they hold. When asked about the difference between this version of the story and the one he made 22 years earlier, Hitchcock always said the first was the work of a talented amateur while the second was the act of a seasoned professional. Indeed, several extraordinary moments in this update represent consummate filmmaking, particularly a relentlessly exciting Albert Hall scene, with a blaring symphony, an assassin's gun, and Doris Day's scream. Along with Hitchcock's other films from the mid-1950s to 1960 (including Vertigo, Rear Window, and Psycho), The Man Who Knew Too Much is the work of a master in his prime. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars Good not Great!!.......2007-06-21

I like this movie and can watch it over and over but it isn't Rear Window or Dial M for Murder. You can't go wrong with Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day. I thought they were great together. I know some reviews don't like Doris in this part but I thought that it shows what a great actress that she is. I would recommend that you watch and rate yourself.

4 out of 5 stars "Don't you realize that Americans dislike having their children stolen?".......2007-04-26

"The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1955) is Alfred Hitchcock's own remake of his 1934 thriller about a married couple (James Stewart and Doris Day) on vacation in Morocco where they got caught up in a nightmare that include murder, espionage, assassinations and the worst of all, kidnapping of their 10-years-old son. The movie which Hitchcock himself considered superior to the original is a great fun. Stewart and Day have a good chemistry together. The film is filled with the wonderful comical scenes and dialogues as well as the scenes of chilling suspense.

The inclusion of "Que Sera, Sera" proved to be a stroke of genius because rarely the song fits the content and plays such an important role in the movie like "Que Sera, Sera" did in "The Man Who Knew Too Much".

Hitchcock also treats us to the live music playing from Arthur Benjamin "Storm Cloud Cantata" for almost ten minutes while scene in London's Royal Albert Hall where the assassination of a very important politician was attempted takes place and both, the scene and the cantata are simply marvelous.

4 out of 5 stars Good remake.......2007-03-05

Having seen both the original and the remake I found it difficult to decide which version I prefer and that shows the quality of this one. Classic Hitchcock, well directed and solid perfomances. The only , in my opinion, grey spot is the selection of Doris Day which seems not to work as well as the other leading ladies Hitchcock chose for his other films. However, to her credit, she makes a good couple with James Stewart.
All in all an intense thriller that will satisfy the viewer.

4 out of 5 stars One of Hitchcock's "entertainments," and a pleasant two hours it is.......2007-01-13

I like The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956; I've never seen the 1934 version) the same way I like To Catch a Thief. Both are big, fat, satisfying entertainments made by professionals at the top of their game but perhaps without much to chew on afterwards. This isn't much of a criticism; I just don't put the film in the same category of some of Hitchcock's other, greater films. One weakness (which also is a strength) is Doris Day. When she's sobbing and being hysterical she gets on my nerves. It's too much and too "actorly." Her strength in the movie is that for most of the time she's good company, and she's believable as a woman who will do what it takes to rescue her son. She paired well with Stewart in both star power and likable personality.

I do think the movie is too long, the curse of so many movies beginning in the Fifties. For me, this undermined some of the set pieces; I wanted Hitchcock to get a move on. The scenes I particularly liked were the unease and suspicion that developed in the church, the cocktail party chit chat, the build-up in the Albert Hall and the rescue of Hank.

And let's hear it for some fine actors who made appearances. I have a lot of admiration for Brenda de Banzie who played the wife of Bernard Miles. She was a fine actress; just see her in The Entertainer as Olivier's wife or in Hobson's Choice when she makes a man of John Mills and masters Charles Laughton (who detested her). Bernard Miles was a first class actor who could play just about anything but aristocrats. For those who like medals and honors, Miles was made a Sir in 1969 and became a lord in 1979 (the first actor to do so after Olivier). Not bad for the son of a farm laborer and a cook. The cocktail party had some old friends it was good to see. Among the familiar faces were Alan Mobray, Hillary Brooke and Carolyn Jones. And among the best of the best is Reggie Nalder, who played the assassin. According to IMBd, he was a handsome guy who, when a young man, was burned severely over the bottom third of his face. He was a chilling killer in The Man Who Knew Too Much who made the premise of the film -- a political assassination -- believable and dreadful.

4 out of 5 stars A thrilling climax at London's Royal Albert Hall..........2007-01-08

Many people have the irritating habit of dying before completing a vital message, thus confusing the hero, not to mention the audience...

Dr. Ben McKenna (James Stewart) and his wife Jo, a former musical star (Doris Day) are vacationing in Morocco with their son, Hank (Christopher Olsen), when they meet Mr. and Mrs. Drayton, a British couple (Brenda de Banzie and Bernard Miles). They are also befriended by a charming Frenchman, Louis Bernard (Daniel Gelin), who invites them to dinner but then cancels at the last minute...

The MacKennas go to a restaurant and end up having their meal with the Draytons, when they spot Louis Bernard...

The next day in the market place, they are caught in an assassination intrigue... While they are wandering in the local market, the crowds suddenly scatter to reveal an Arab fleeing from his pursuers... Dr. McKenna stands amazed as the Arab falls into his arms, a knife sticking out of his back...

Gulping his last breath, the dying man mutters some words and collapses... Dr. McKenna is completely taken aback when the Arab's hood falls from his head and he is revealed as Bernard in disguise... McKenna is left knowing too little, but as far as the assassins are concerned, too much...

To prevent Dr. McKenna from revealing what he knows, the conspirators kidnap his son as a hostage... The film is primarily concerned with the dilemma of kidnapping--how to get the little boy back safely... The subplot about the assassination is just the setup...

The film is a breathless escapade... The death of Bernard comes suddenly and points out that death comes when we least expect it...

Stewart is charged with emotion as the Midwestern doctor, accidentally involved in political intrigue... His perceptive facial expressions and indignant delivery made him convincingly human--a person we could easily identify with... It is his temperament that actually sets the pace for the entire film...

By 1956, the lovely Doris Day had won increasing esteem as an actress as well as a singer... She had been particularly strong opposite James Cagney in the Ruth Etting's biopic, 'Love Me or Leave Me,' but she was still unsure of her basic Thespian talents...

The casting of character actor Reggie Malder as the assassin, is brilliant... The man looks like a menace and his effusive portrayal radiates evil...

A sequel to the 1942 Disney classic, <I>Bambi</I>, is laden with expectations since audiences are justifiably protective of this beloved tale abounding with enchantment and nostalgia. Rest assured: <I>Bambi II</I> rises to the occasion, succeeding at every turn. Brian Pimental directs the 70-minute direct-to-video release, which seamlessly integrates the beauty, subtlety, and essence of the original film. The new tale is actually a "midquel" as it takes place in the middle of the original film's story line, exploring Bambi's coming-of-age challenges. The saga begins soon after Bambi's mother has died--and for viewers who shudder at the thought of having to relive that traumatic movie experience, you won't. With gentle inferences to her passing, Bambi (voiced by Alexander Gould, <I>Finding Nemo</I>) is left to the clumsy-though-well-meaning care of his father, the Great Prince (voiced by Patrick Stewart) who faces the difficult task of raising a son while silently mourning his own loss. Yet the weighty subject of death is soon overshadowed by the wonders of forest life. Through skillful storytelling, the film takes an early turn toward levity. After all, it's spring and Bambi's familiar friends, Thumper and Flower, are ready to play. Especially charming are the scenes where the forest animals give each other lessons in bravery and soon have a chance to test their mettle in scuffles with a newcomer to the mix, a blustering bully named Ronno (voiced by Anthony Ghannam). A strong soundtrack includes selections by Martina McBride, Michelle Lewis, Alison Krauss, and Anthony Callea. There is even a nostalgic nod to the original composer, Frank Churchill, with "Let's Sing a Gay Little Spring Song." The film's strength, however, is in its well-crafted humor: simple one-liners and animated antics that refrain from 21st century trends to cloak inappropriate innuendoes and double entendres in G-rated clothing, hoping to pander to an adult audience. This is vintage Disney; it panders to no one yet pleases all--delightfully worth the wait. The DVD's bonus material includes a "making-of" featurette, Bambi trivia, and a mini-tutorial with a Disney animator. (All ages) <I>--Lynn Gibson</I>

4 out of 5 stars A prince of a movie.......2007-05-07

Disney can still create movies without as much politically correct hoopla.

5 out of 5 stars a successful midquel.......2007-04-24

I was surprised that *Bambi II* turned out better than I had expected. It was a good "midquel". In fact, this was probably the first midquel I had even heard/seen.

*Bambi II* takes place right after the scary moment when Bambi gets himself in trouble. His mother was able to get him out of the situation. Scared and confused, Bambi takes off in a run. After a while, Bambi looks back and calls out for his mother repeatedly. Soon, his father, the Great Prince, informs him that his mother will no longer be coming back.

The Great Prince must look after Bambi. However, the Great Prince doesn't feel that it is fitting for him to raise Bambi. He consults the wise owl to seek a surrogate mother.

Bambi is lanky and naive. However, with the help of his friends, Thumper and Flower, he develops some of his skills and self-confidence. He does this to impress his father. The Great Prince can't help but notice and adore his son.

*Bambi II* is a wonderful movie. The best part for me was seeing everyone scaring off each other with "grr!". The "grr!" was started by Bambi and his 2 friends. Just simply adorable!

As always, this Disney film is filled with menacing characters. The characters put Bambi to the test to see if he'll be the next Great Prince. Rest assured that there are more good than bad...such as romance...well, at least, some flirting and blushing.

Simply an enjoyable movie that Disney does best.

2 out of 5 stars Bambi II was a sweet film that does try to live up to the original; however..........2007-04-20

I must commend disney for Bambi II's good points, such as it's stunning artwork and visuals, and it's timeworn characters, but there we are: the characters are timeworn. Bambi is a 65 year old cartoon, and to make a followup to such an old movie was a big risk on disney's part, but twisting the original story around for Bambi II was an even bigger one. Bambi II takes place between the time when Bambi's mother died and the time when Bambi grew into a buck.
One similarity that Bambi II shares with it's predecessor is that it has no real plot to it; it simply "moves along" from winter to early spring where Bambi begins to grow budding antlers.

The voice acting was not that bad, especially young Ronno's, which sounded fairly authentic to a 1942 film. However, though the target younger audience may not notice this, the rest of the characters sounded noticably different. Alexander Gould does a good job on Bambi's voice, but at times Bambi sounded very modern. I know that a lot of time has passed since 1942, but that is, no matter what the circumstances, no excuse for disney to stray away from the old style treatment that Bambi II's diologue should have recieved.

The songs were mainly sung by Alissen Crauss, thus none of the characters do any singing, thank goodness. Unfortunately, that kind of music just does not fit with Bambi. A nice chorus would have fit in much more nicely. All in all, the songs were a bit country oriented.

Now to Bambi II's strongest point: the animation. The forest visuals were stunning, and the animals were very smooth and polished, unlike many of disney's sequels. I was very pleased with this.

There are also three new characters in Bambi II: Mena, the porcupine, and a worrying groundhog. They added some nice charm to the story... but do deer really celebrate Groundhog Day? At least this gives us disney's perspective as to the time of year that Bambi's mother was killed. Mena makes a brief appearance as a doe willing to take care of Bambi, though I wont reveal the details as that would spoil the plot.
Ronno is actually not a new character; he is the deer that fought Bambi for Faline in the original. He is portrayed as being slightly older than Bambi with a spottless coat and two baby horns, which was very cute. He is obviously plays the part of the "bully", never missing a chance to pick on Bambi's spots to impress Faline.

To sum up Bambi II: The animation was beautiful, some of the best among disney animation, but the plot, though it had it's charming moments, was lackluster and too easily accessible.

1 out of 5 stars Oh, gimme a break.......2007-03-31

This movie wasn't better than Bambi. Far from it. And these guys are right, it's not a continuation of Bambi either. I just find it so hard to believe that after all the h*ll you people have raised over how BAD disney's sequels are just suddenly come and adore this new junk. Bambi ll was so dissapointing, it made me sick. It was bad enough seeing The Lion King 1 1/2 ruin the original LK's perfect plot, but disney making a similar add-on to Bambi is just unforgivable. This is my last straw: I'll never buy another cartoon from disney again.

Before his handlers convinced him to settle for the safety of a screen franchise, the young Elvis Presley harbored riskier dreams as an actor, not just a star. This 1958 drama, his fourth feature outing, hints at the underlying seriousness of that goal. Presley plays Danny Fisher, a New Orleans teenager struggling to graduate from high school while working in a sleazy French Quarter club to support his family. He's also characterized as a troubled youth with a dangerous temper and feelings of shame and resentment toward his meek, unemployed father (Dean Jagger). When Danny's gift for singing provides him with a potential career break (and the requisite excuse for Elvis's production numbers), his involvement with a ruthless gangster (Walter Matthau) and his sultry, alcoholic moll (Carolyn Jones) soon threatens both his future and his family.

That story line, with Danny torn between a budding romance with a good waitress (Dolores Hart) and the bad moll, Ronnie (Jones), proves as effective as it is predictable, hardly surprising given its source in an early Harold Robbins bestseller. But <I>King Creole</I> also boasts an impressive production pedigree (including the team behind no less a classic than <I>Casablanca</I>, producer Hal Wallis and director Michael Curtiz), and the supporting cast helps elicit one of Presley's most emotional performances. Jones in particular rises above her role's inherent clichés, her self-loathing and sexuality both palpable. Presley, still a few years away from the more sanitized image that would be integral to those franchise features, is young enough to be a credible teen, but more crucially he makes his rage and yearning largely convincing.

Ironically, the dramatic sparks prove all the more welcome in light of the largely forgettable music, which variously plunders Chicago blues ("Trouble," a knock-off of "Hoochie Coochie Man") and unconvincingly crosses Presley's Memphis rock with Crescent City jazz ("Dixieland Rock"), all to far less effect than Presley's two preceding movies, <I>Jailhouse Rock</I> and <I>Loving You</I>. <I>--Sam Sutherland</I>

3 out of 5 stars music is life.......2007-02-28

I'm 60+ and brought this for my male-friend who loved the music on the CD because he had seen the movie in his youth.

I had never seen the movie up until now, but I think of all the Elvis movies made, the DVD had the best music of all the films Elvis made. Up until his mention my favorite was G. I. Blues.

Musically I'd stick with Elvis's 68 Comeback DVD: the black leather program shown on TV way back when.

The only one that sticks in my memory that I don't have is "Jailhouse Rock," in black & white, I beleive.

4 out of 5 stars A very good movie(4 stars on the Elvis scale).......2006-07-28

Probably 3 on a standard scale. But lets face it, he gets an extra star because of his charisma!
Elvis had limited acting abilities at best. This is one of his better efforts. They made this one before the Colonel got him wrapped up in his Frankie and Annette style movies in the 60's.
This one isn't quite as good as Jail House Rock, but it is up there.
There are also several of his classic tunes in this one that are not to be missed!

4 out of 5 stars Good music, okay film.......2006-07-20

I just recently began to enjoy the music of Elvis Presley and, in doing so, decided to purchase a couple of movies to see how they were. I certainly didn't go in expecting a worthwhile film; I was pleasantly surprised at Elvis's ability to act. Don't get me wrong--he isn't worthy of notoriety based on his acting. But, in combination with his extraordinary ability to sing and captivate an audience (camera included), his movies probably shouldn't be totally ignored. I would consider them a great way to access a singing legend on film and enjoy something you can't see anymore--Elvis Presley singing songs. I particularly enjoy this movie as "Trouble" and "King Creole" are both pretty good songs (from a vocal standpoint, anyway) especially being movie tunes. Good, but not great.

5 out of 5 stars His BEST Movie.......2006-06-24

By far his best (together with Jailhouse Rock). If only he was able to continue his movie career in movies such as this - quality production values, good script, quality director. This movie makes you ask a lot of "what if" questions regarding his "Hollywood" career.

4 out of 5 stars ELVIS COULD ACT WHEN GIVEN A CHANCE..........2006-03-27

It's a pity Elvis didn't force the Colonel to help him get more roles that had some acting - he might have been known for that, other than the cheesy do-overs of the 1960s.

Elvis' good performance, plus performances by Dean Jagger, Walter Matthau, Vic Morrow, and Carolyn Jones make this worth having for any Elvis fan. Who knows what might have happened to the King of Rock n' Roll and his career, had he stepped up and demanded more real acting roles in his movies?

Inspired by Chris Marker's acclaimed short film <I>La Jetée</I> (which is included on the DVD <I>Short 2: Dreams</I>), <I>12 Monkeys</I> combines intricate, intelligent storytelling with the uniquely imaginative vision of director Terry Gilliam. The story opens in the wintry wasteland of the year 2035, where a virulent plague has forced humans to live in a squalid, oppressively regimented underground. Bruce Willis plays a societal outcast who is given the opportunity to erase his criminal record by "volunteering" to time-travel into the past to obtain a pure sample of the deadly virus that will help future scientists to develop a cure. But in bouncing from 1918 to the early and mid-1990s, he undergoes an ordeal that forces him to question his own perceptions of reality. Caught between the dangers of the past and the devastation of the future, he encounters a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe) who is initially convinced he's insane, and a wacky mental patient (Brad Pitt in a twitchy Oscar-nominated role) with links to a radical group that may have unleashed the deadly virus. Equal parts mystery, tragedy, psychological thriller, and apocalyptic drama, <I>12 Monkeys</I> ranks as one of the best science fiction films of the '90s, boosted by Gilliam's visual ingenuity and one of the finest performances of Willis's career. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-06-04

I really liked the movie. One of the best sci-fi movies I have seen. But I have a question. When Madeleine Stowe calls up the number that Bruce Willis is supposed to call, and she reaches a carpet cleaning company she is overjoyed thinking that the virus plague is a hoax after all. She nevertheless leaves a message in the voice mail of that number and recounts it to Bruce Willis who of course has heard it before and repeats the message verbatim even before Stowe could finish telling him. The whole point of the film is that Bruce Willis is reliving the past exactly as it had happened, with him as one of the main protagonist. So what actually happened in 1996? Did Stowe call up the carpet cleaning company? Did she leave a message? If she did and repeated that to Willis did Willis know beforehand what her message was? If he knew, then how did he know? He was NOT time travelling THEN. He was just a little boy of 8 years. And if it was not Willis (Cole) in 1996 who Stowe (Railly) met, then who was it? Because Cole was 8 years old in 1996. Can anybody throw any light?

5 out of 5 stars The Army of The 12 Monkey's Is Coming...Be Prepared.......2007-04-27

Terry Gilliam (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) takes a typical "time travel" theory and twists it into one heck of a psychological thriller. The premise of the movie is rather interesting (if you're into sci-fi). Cole (Bruce Willis) is in the future (30 or so years?) in a world where only 1% of the population lives - all underground. He's imprisoned for random acts of violence we're slightly hinted towards in a dark, gloomy, odd underground Philadelphia prison. He is hand picked by the top scientists of the underground world to travel back in time to 1996 to gather information on the super-virus that was released in December 1996 by the army of the 12 Monkeys. Unfortunately he is sent back to 1990 Baltimore and finds himself put into a mental institution because, lets be honest, anybody that randomly shows up and is going on about collecting information about the virus that wipes out 5 billion people is obviously going to be thought to be a little nuts. At the institution he runs into Jeffrey (Brad Pitt) who is very insane (Oscar-nominated role in this movie) and "befriends" Cole as eventually helps him escape. In the process, Cole's psychiatrist Kathryn (Madeleine Stowe) feels an odd connection with him on a more spiritual level. She is convinced she knows him from somewhere. To speed it up, he goes back to the future and then goes BACK to 1996...there the story goes on...

All throughout, the movie takes Cole and twists his (and your) mind and starts to make him (and you) doubt if his "time-travel" experiences have actually happened...or was he just really insane. The movie is pretty straight forward in making it clear that he did go back in time, but you really go "or did he?" the whole time. It is really cool how everyone plays together and ties together. It twists your mind a lot, and you'll be biting your nails the whole time trying to figure out what will happen. The whole "dream" sequence that is seen throughout finally comes together at the end and its a CLASSIC "Wow...." scene. I have to say it was the coolest twist on modern sci-fi mind thrillers to date.

If you've seen the movie The Prestige, you'll see some similarities...some.

I'm Will Black, and thats my review of 12 Monkeys.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie, lackluster HD DVD........2007-04-19

I've always loved the movie, and while it looks great in HD, it's very reminiscent of the first few DVDs that came out. It has quite a few defects just during normal playback, and the additional content is exactly the same as it is on the DVD... which looked bad on the original, and looks TERRIBLE now.

Unfortunately, there aren't many HD DVDs to choose from yet, but having your expectations set at a reasonable level can't hurt. :/ I suspect this one will be like the first Tron DVD release, and coming out a ways down the road (assuming the format survives) to compare against newer releases.

5 out of 5 stars Cinematic satisfaction.......2007-03-30

The variety within this action-packed, futuristic thriller is loaded with ever changing elements that will keep you glued to the screen. After your stomach's in knots, the separate goals eventually unite in a race against time that will pull you into the action. Packed with surprises and intellectual stimulation, this film is not predictable. The elements will leave you satisfied and the shockingly realistic possibilities revealed will leave you thinking. Superb acting, writing, directing and production only add to the exciting cinematic ride. Well worth the watch.

5 out of 5 stars A great, fun, intelligent film I highly reccomend........2007-03-21

I very bleak but fun look at a dystopian future. A killer virus. Surreal story line and great actors like Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. What's not to like?

A married man, left alone during a hot summer, fantasizes madly about the impossibly gorgeous woman living in the upstairs apartment. When the woman is Marilyn Monroe, such fantasies are the stuff of epics, and <I>The Seven Year Itch</I> is a memorable laugh machine. Tom Ewell, repeating his role from George Axelrod's Broadway hit, plays the itchy protagonist, whose vivid imagination gets the better of him. When Monroe finally comes downstairs and becomes friends (confiding, among other things, that she keeps her undies in the icebox in this hot weather), imagination meets reality in a merciless attack on the male libido. Ewell's crack timing is matched by Monroe's zesty comic flair, and the scene in which her white dress is blown skyward by a passing subway train has entered the encyclopedia of great movie images. Director Billy Wilder adapted the play with Axelrod; if the film is not one of Wilder's signature works (<I>Some Like It Hot</I> and <I>The Apartment</I> would soon follow), it is nevertheless a smoothly crafted comedy. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

5 out of 5 stars The "backstory" is the wrongstory.......2006-12-11

The movie commentary on the disc couldn't be more off-base. Comments by
self congratulatory "film critics" (Thanks Hugh Hefner) on the repressive
nature of the film board of the times belies the fact that this is a great
movie and the fact that despite the death of censership, a better movie of this
type (or a remake) has never been made. It's the restraint that gives the
movie its intensity and romantic appeal. Making a commentary on this movie
that simply critisizes censership does not do this movie justice.

5 out of 5 stars Mmmmmm Marilyn!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

movie is kind of boring and tedious. only the sight of MM makes it exciting. but get it to see the legend at her sexiest, cutest, most edible, luscious best!!!!!!!!!!!!! she is very beautiful in it. she should have really tried to stay looking this way. wow, what a persona/personality!!!!!!!! each word she says, move she makes is fascinating. she operates like no other woman, and no other woman operates like her!! lol. she is my idol!!

4 out of 5 stars Not Wilder's (or Monroe's) Best.......2006-11-09

"The Seven Year Itch" is a movie directed by legendary director Billy Wilder, that is probably the 2nd most famous Marilyn Monroe film behind "Some Like It Hot" (also directed by Wilder). The Seven Year Itch has been cited as one of Monroe's most enjoyable films and I enjoyed it to a certain extent, although it's far from a perfect film. The movie is about a man named Richard, who's wife and son go on vacation for the summer leaving Richard home all alone. Since it seems common practice for people to do this, Richard watches as his friends take advantage of the absence of their wives and drink and smoke, etcetera. Richard, himself, is a little bit neurotic and very paranoid so he tries his best to avoid doing things like that. That is until, fate steps in; It steps in, in the form of a tomato plant that smashes his lawn chair. It falls from the new tenant's window and the new tenant takes Richard aback. It's a beautiful woman, whom he learns is named The Girl (Monroe, who looks stunning). After some flirtation, he invites her down for a drink only to be consumed by the fear of the fact that he could be seen by his wife or someone else. When The Girl comes down, they drink and mess around; But Richard can't escape that nagging fear. When he goes to work, he learns of something called The Seven Year Itch. This is something that a man who has been married for seven years (Richard has) experiences for women around him. That's almost the entire movie summed up. Out of the other Wilder films I've seen (Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot, and Sunset Boulevard) this is without a doubt, my least favorite. The charm of certain actors, notably Monroe, can only carry a film so far. I found this movie charming, don't get me wrong, and it also had some humor and it was entertaining for the most part. But some scenes I found dull and wishing that they would end. This movie does, technically, feature one of the most famous scenes in movie history. This is, of course, the scene where Monroe's skirt is lifted up and she nervously pushes it back down. This scene, at least in this film, doesn't exist. Wind from a subway is blown up her dress, but we don't see it flying up or pushing it down. We see her kneecaps and the dress going up and then being pressed back down. Maybe it was just my copy (mine's an older one), but I didn't see it. Anyway, bottom line; Enjoyable movie, but no masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars The untiring blaze of seduction!.......2006-10-14

Wilder played hard with this delicious comedy, around a simple man who literally will become the most desired male sex symbol.

This movie is not only the most Fellinian of Wilder' s career; in its challenging proposal anticipated in twenty years to Woody Allen; its mordacious dialogues and suggestive homage to "From here to the eternity" focuses with delirious humor the collective unconscious around the eternal sex symbol per excellence; the mighty Aphrodite Marilyn Monroe in the most reminded and erotic scene of the movie, that would influence the well reminded remake "The woman in red."

Tantalizing, mesmerizing, funny, cynical and enjoyable film that enhances with the years as the good wine.

1 out of 5 stars very bad and pretentious movie.......2006-09-19

the screenplay was so bad that almost drove me crazy. like watching a badly directed drama on the stage, that guy kept talking to himself, tried to convey those no-big-deal thoughts. those monologues should never put into a movie but on a theatre's stage. monroe was specially pretentious under the guidance of billy wilder who, at that time was very good, but now all of his works are so difficult to be absorbed as good movies. almost every scene looked like a scene grabbed from a broadway show, so pretentious and so shallow. if this was a musical i might be able to stand it better.

<I>House of Wax</I> brought Vincent Price into the horror genre, where he fit as snugly as a scalpel in a mad scientist's hand. A remake of the 1933 film <I>Mystery of the Wax Museum</I>, this entertaining Gothic shocker casts Price as a sculptor of wax figures; his unwilling victims--er, "models"--lend their bodies to his lifelike depictions of Marie Antoinette and Joan of Arc. The film was one of the top 10 moneymakers of its year, thanks in part to the 3-D gimmick, which explains why so many things are aimed at the camera (why else would the paddleball man be there?). Footnote to history: director Andre De Toth was blind in one eye, and thus could not see in three dimensions.

Not at all a musty relic of the early-sound era, the original <I>Mystery of the Wax Museum</I> (shot in a soft, trial version of Technicolor) is saucy, pre-Code fun. As corpses disappear from the morgue, Lionel Atwill's wax museum adds to its displays. Coincidence, or the work of the hideously deformed fiend stalking the Manhattan night? Most of the snappy dialogue comes courtesy of reporter Glenda Farrell, a vintage wisecracking dame. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Description

Museum fire turns handsome man into human monster who steals bodies from morgue to create lifelike images in wax.

3 out of 5 stars PLEASE RELEASE THIS IN ANAGLYPH!.......2007-05-28

This movie was originally shot in 3D, and is one of the classic 3D movies with pretty good 3D when presented well-- I have an old VHS recording of House of Wax transmitted in anaglyph over broadcast TV from a decade or two ago, and it still looks pretty hot with red-blue glasses.

However, 3D with shutter glasses is now essentially useless. Most new TVs that people will buy will be LCD and most DVD players progressive scan, which just don't work with 3D. On the other hand, anaglyph should still work on LCD and computer screens. Since this is a black and white movie anyway, anaglyph isn't a bad choice for this movie (the only release I know of currently is "The Bubble" which isn't nearly as good as House of Wax). We need some good anaglyph 3D movies released on DVD, and this is a prime candidate. At any rate, this movie is well worth viewing in 3D anaglyph, and I'll keep watching my old VHS copy while waiting for it to be released in DVD anaglyph 3D.

At first I thought this was the new one and almost gave a bad review.
The new version is not worth watching.
Buy this one in 3D if you can still find it.
It is worth wearing the glasses.

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-01-11

A fantastic movie! One of the best Vincent Price movies, imo. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2006-12-01

This is such a fun, kinda spooky lil movie! I can't believe some crappy b-movie "remake" (yeah, RIGHT!!!) was made recently!! Vincent Price is awesome here! I LOVE Sue's unfortunate buddy, Cathy - "You got all the brains, and all I got is [giggles] what I got!"!! The moment when she "uncovers" the truth about Joan of Arc is chilling, along with its repercussions.

The bonus film, 1933's "Mystery of the Wax Museum", is quite good! I love that it is 20 years older than "House of Wax", yet it is set in then-present-day 1933, whereas "House of Wax" is set at the turn of the 20th century. I find the older film a bit spookier! Both are highly enjoyable, and I recommend you watch 'em :)
