4 out of 5 stars The Matrix in HD.......2007-06-15

The pros and cons of the Matrix trilogy have been argued ad nauseum, so I will limit myself to the HD-DVD version.

The transfer to HD of these movies is astounding. The sound is crystal clear and the picture is stunning (in 1080). The reflections caught in Morpheus' sunglasses and the individual clarity of water drops brings these already visually stunning movies to another level.

My nitpick is with certain special effects, notably the bullet-time effect. When transferred to HD the bullet-time effect looks slightly grainy and pixelated compared to the rest of the film.

Nitpicks aside, this is still a very entertaining movie trilogy and the HD experience makes it exponentially better.

2 out of 5 stars Problem with the double-sided media..........2007-06-15

Ordinarily i would have given this box set 5 stars, but i've taken it down to a 2 because of the questionable quality of the double sided HD DVDs used. The Matrix plays fine, but Matrix Reloaded refuses to start up 80% of the time and Matrix Revolutions has never successfully played through the part of the movie where Jada Pinkett-Smith is trying to pilot the hovership to Zion whilst outrunning the sentinels (it always freezes and distorts). I own about a dozen other titles and these are the only two that give me problems. I should point out that all my other HD-DVDs are single sided.
I am using the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player.

5 out of 5 stars I love HD.......2007-06-13

This set gets a 5 purely on the fact that the movies have never looked or sounded better. I am only rating the Audio/Video quality not the actual movies themselves. I am not happy with the HD-DVD cases, I am not sure if Blu-Ray is the same but they don't stay closed. If you like Matrix this is truly the Ultimate set.

3 out of 5 stars two of three disks dont work in a Toshiba HD-A20.......2007-06-10

Dont know if it is the player's fault or the disks, but two of the three disks give a 4086 4203 error on my new Toshiba HD-A20 player. A check of various HD forums indicate many people are having issues (at least those using Toshiba players), and they are resolved by replacing the disks (sometimes many times).

5 out of 5 stars However you feel about the Matrix Trilogy , THIS IS HOW TO MAKE A HD-DVD!.......2007-06-06

My review is more centered on the technology on the discs and the extras and features, and less on the movies. Everyone heard of the Matrix, and I will leave you to your opinion. However, not everyone is familiar with the posibilities of the HD-DVD format. Frankly - to date the Matrix Trilogy is hands down THE BEST implementation of a movie using the HD-DVD format in my opinion. From the miniature overlay in the bottom corner of the making of WHILE YOU ARE WATCHING THE SCENES THEMSELVES IN THE MOVIE, to the amount of extras (not on extra discs thank you) they really took their time. The Video quality is noticeably sharper and cleaner than the DVD version. As a comparison - I have the Ultimate Neo Collection that comes with the Neo Bust and the 10-disc DVD Collection. This 4-DVD set has all the same material in a much more organized and easily viewable format and it is much easier to find and use the information. Even a casual viewer has to give credit to the ability to see the special effects in a mini-window during the movie - easily shut off is they do not want it.

Overall if you are a fan of the Matrix seris this is a no-brainer of a purchase. If not then I don't know what to tell you other than this might be worth the money just to be able to show-off what HD-DVD can do other than be more expensive than the original DVD sets of these movies.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Matrix Trilogy (HD DVD) Review by Justin Sluss.......2007-06-21

The Movies Themselves are the science fiction cult classics written, directed by The Wachowski Brothers and primarily star Keanu Reeves as "Neo", Laurence Fishburne as "Morpheus", Carrie-Anne Moss as "Trinity" and Hugo Weaving as "Agent Smith." If you're one of the of the few people who have never seen these films then you're in for "one hell of a high definition treat!" These films include some of the best action sequences and CG special effects since Star Wars. Don't get mad at me if you're a fanboy for that statement, I'm just saying that these flicks really have set the benchmark for this type of action in Hollywood. It's been copied time and time again but no one can do anything as incredible as these trilogy of films did in theatrical release. This is THE BEST HD DVD RELEASE YET, hands down.

Video Quality on this release is VC-1 encoded on three 30gb Dual-Layered HD DVD's, one disc for each film obviously. As stated above these films are by far probably some of the best films ever for action sequences and CG special effects. So this release obviously held high expectations from everyone to be an amazing video transfer not only on the first film but all three. Well they didn't let us down, this is some of the best "eye candy" in high definition available. The video transfer on the first film ( "The Matrix" ) isn't quiet as good as the second two films in the trilogy video-wise at points but it is definitely a transfer I would have rated at least a 4 1/2 if I reviewed the films seperately. This is kind of disappointing in a way but you have to realize that film probably wasn't shot on the same type of cameras and such. Because the second two films were shot planned back to back they really hold the same video quality feel. I'm not complaining though, don't get me wrong. This is a great release in terms of video quality!

Audio Quality on this release is in Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (which is by far the best choice and really going to blow you away) and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 @ 640kbps. These films aren't just known for being eye candy, so that being said I'd just like to state for the record "These are the best 5.1 surround mixes I have ever heard in my entire life." And I'm not just saying that to give this release even 5's for everything. You'll have to hear it to believe it obviously but take my word, it's nothing short of AMAZING!

Bonus Materials are by far the real highlight on this release and nothing short of breakthrough. The "In-Movie Experience" is included on all three films and are all the best "In-Movie Experience" features that Warner Brothers has yet to offer on HD DVD. The Wachowski Brothers have a written commentary (which is the same on each disc) but there's also 2 different commentaries by Philosophers and Film Critics across all three films as well. If you read the written commentary first by The Wachowski Brothers you'll understand why the 2 commentaries mentioned above are there. Also The first film features 2 more commentaries than the sequels, one that even includes some of the cast and crew. The special features go all the way to as far back as the "Enter the Matrix" video game and it's exclusive cut-scenes. Music videos for songs featured on the film's soundtrack, For instance Marilyn Manson's "Rock is Dead" and another music video by P.O.D. are there too. There's tons of "making of" documentaries on each film to keep you busy for at least a week. Then you've got the music from The Matrix in "Matrix Reloaded." This release is the cheaper version of the trilogy and I can honestly tell you that this version packs a lot of punch for the price tag. Now I'm sure that more expensive "Ultimate Matrix Collection" offers more bonus materials on it's extra HD DVD but you choose whatever version you want, you're going to be extremely satisfied either way.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Matrix HD Set.......2007-06-15

The Complete Matrix Trilogy is absolutely incredible and you get a free copy of The Animatrix if you have the Xbox 360 HD DVD player with Xbox Live access! This set already includes over 25 hours of extras and I feel there is no need to waste the extra cash on the Ultimate Matrix Collection unless you do not have The Animatrix and Xbox Live. Also you get to watch 'Enter The Matrix' (over 1 hr long) which are all the live action scenes from the videogame that shows what Narobi & Ghost were doing while Neo was battling his way thru The Matrix.

The picture quality of this HD DVD set is flawless and the first film (though 4 years older) blends in perectly with the final two Films. I know the Wachowski brothers are proud of this release! The In Movie Experience (picture in picture extras)is perfect and the Dolby TrueHD is astounding! Do yourself a favor and make this (along with Planet Earth -HD DVD) your first boxed set purchases on HD DVD. I was never that interested in Matrix Reloaded but now that the HD DVD picture has kept me glued to the screen, I've learned to appreciate the film and have watched it numerous times.

With your purchase, you can rest assured that Warner Brothers, with HD DVD, has delivered! You're going to absolutely love the picture quality and enjoy the sound when Neo takes on over 100+ Agent Smiths! Lastly you get a ton of commentaries from not only the actors, but philosphers such as Cornell West, and even critics that critized the film! The Complete Matrix Trilogy has tons of replay value from In Movie Experience to extras. If you own an HD DVD player buying this set is a must! It truly is the Look and Sound of PERFECT! Thank You Warner Bros.!!!

5 out of 5 stars What HD-DVD was designed for!!!!.......2007-06-15

As the high definition wars wage on the argument goes back and forth as to the future of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray (watch everyone's jaw drop when a third format comes out of left field and ends up winning). For those of us who are fortunate to have HD-DVD players, the faithful day that we get a really great movie that was MADE for HD has come. The Matrix Trilogy is a great storyline that comes equipped with killer special effects and beautiful scenery. In the HD-DVD installment, the picture is so precise and crisp that I spent half the time I was watching it trying to take in background items I was never able to see on the DVD version.

The sound is incredible and with uncompressed Dolby, the opening explosion scene of Matrix: Reloaded had my non-tech buddies giving an impressed "wow". The encoding has almost no flaws (on the discs I recieved they all played all the way through without stalling once) and the occassional grain found in 1st generation HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is non-existent on this boxed set.

Xbox 360 owners even get a free standard definition download of Animatrix, making this set definitely worth the price.

If you own HD-DVD, it's because of movies like these. Purchasing this boxed set should be a no-brainer (although I would avoid the ultimate collection on HD as only the movies are in HD, just like this boxed set).

NOTE TO XBOX 360 OWNERS: Make sure to get your system online and download the spring 07 update for your system (if you haven't already; you'll now have a "Marketplace" blade if you have) as well as the HD-DVD update patch that should download automatically once you play a newer HD-DVD (the Matrix definitely qualifies).

5 out of 5 stars Best HD movies yet, period.......2007-06-12

Just got my box set today and popped in part 1 on my A-2. It was glorious to see the matrix in HD. You wonder if they knew when they made this movie, that Hi def was lurking around the corner. It's magnificent, can it get any clearer any more real? I thought pirates on Blu was great, this just takes the cake.

5 out of 5 stars Get it again.......2007-06-12

If you own an HD DVD player its safe to assume that your into sharp images and clear powerful sounds. I own the original standard box set and like many, went ahead bought the HD version anyway. Well worth it.

The visual is incredible but for me the real difference is in the sound. Powerfull and crystal clear. I cant get enough of Trinity jumping out the building being chased by the Agent. Glass breaking and bullets flying are the perfect sound effects when listening to quality HD sound.

My opinion; HD is the better format right now. Blu-ray may have the most movies but HD has the better product.

With movies like <I>Chocolat</I>, it's always best to relax your intellectual faculties and absorb the abundant sensual pleasures, be it the heart-stopping smile of chocolatier Juliette Binoche as she greets a new customer, an intoxicating cup of spiced hot cocoa, or the soothing guitar of an Irish gypsy played by Johnny Depp. Adapted by Robert Nelson Jacobs from Joanne Harris's popular novel and lovingly directed by Lasse Hallström, the film covers familiar territory and deals in broad metaphors that even a child could comprehend, so it's no surprise that some critics panned it with killjoy fervor. Their objections miss the point. Familiarity can be comforting and so can easy metaphors when placed in a fable that's as warmly inviting as this one.

Driven by fate, Vianne (Binoche) drifts into a tranquil French village with her daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol, from <I>Ponette</I>) in the winter of 1959. Her newly opened chocolatier is a source of attraction and fear, since Vianne's ability to revive the villagers' passions threatens to disrupt their repressive traditions. The pious mayor (Alfred Molina) sees Vianne as the enemy, and his war against her peaks with the arrival of "river rats" led by Roux (Depp), whose attraction to Vianne is immediate and reciprocal. Splendid subplots involve a battered wife (Lena Olin), a village elder (Judi Dench), and her estranged daughter (Carrie-Anne Moss), and while the film's broader strokes may be regrettable (if not for Molina's rich performance, the mayor would be a caricature), its subtleties are often sublime. <I>Chocolat</I> reminds you of life's simple pleasures and invites you to enjoy them. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

Nominated for 5 Academy Awards(R) including Best Picture, Best Actress (Juliette Binoche -- THE ENGLISH PATIENT), and Best Supporting Actress (Judi Dench -- SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE), CHOCOLAT is the beautiful and captivating comedy from the acclaimed director of THE CIDER HOUSE RULES! Nobody could have imagined the impact that the striking Vianne (Binoche) would make when she arrived in a tranquil, old-fashioned French town. In her very unusual chocolate shop, Vianne begins to create mouth-watering confections that almost magically inspire the straitlaced villagers to abandon themselves to temptation and happiness! But it is not until another stranger, the handsome Roux (Johnny Depp -- SLEEPY HOLLOW), arrives in town that Vianne is finally able to recognize her own desires!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars bittersweet 'Chocolat' for me............2007-06-12

First, let me start this review by saying how much I adore chocolate (the food). I mean, there is a reason that women love this stuff. Personally, I would even be so bold as to say I prefer my chocolate dark and bittersweet (I can get more antioxidents from this, too--another incentive). Now, moving on to the movie. How would I describe CHOCOLAT if I were to compare it to a bar of the dark stuff? Well, I can't say it tastes authentic. My favorite type of chocolate isn't even European, or French, for that matter. It's Ecuadorian, with a cocoa count of [at least] 75%. CHOCOLAT wants to be this kind of chocolate. Instead, it ends being more of a blend of Hershey's milk chocolate (to please the American consumers) with the sensibility of a dash of French dark. In other words, not really smooth or memorable, but it wants to be!

I'll add in just a dash of synopsis, here, to get a sense of the recipe. For starters, director Lasse Hallstrom (or should I say "sous chef") paints the picture of a conservative little French town that Vianne Rocher (Juliette Binoche) swoops into, with her daughter, Anouk (Victoire Thivisol). This ultimately poses a great challenge to the Comte (Alfred Molina) and most everyone else. Why? Because Vianne has set up a Chocolaterie (chocolate shop) during Lent--an observance that the devoutly Catholic villagers strongly uphold. This is a time when they abstain from indulgences (especially foods like chocolate!). This also co-stars Johnny Depp.

Though, CHOCOLAT delivers in terms of visual beauty and spectacle, and the chocolates look divine, the storyline and most of the rest of this film leave a lot to be desired. Yes, a lot of you will think I am being harsh. Yet, while I sat there, watching this film (I won't even lie to you--I saw it twice), I couldn't help but feel that CHOCOLAT stole gimmicks from virtually every film genre focusing on mysticism, magical realism or food and claimed them as their own. The filmmakers desperately wanted to make the story something for everyone. We have a swashbuckling pirate (Johnny Depp), who is Irish, nonetheless. We have the mysterious stranger who sails into a town with her daughter, and no one knows her background. Is she a heretic? A witch with a cauldron of chocolatey sacreligious goodness--made to saturate and corrupt the palates of the unsuspecting villagers? We even have a subplot alluding to a battered wife (Lena Olin). Good lord! The gimmicks boggle the mind. Okay, dear readers. Thank you for sticking with me on this review. Those of you who were diligent enough to read it, I have a verdict for you. Skip this film and watch.....I am thinking LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE. Hey, it even has chocolate in the title, and you'll never look at wedding cake quite the same way again.

5 out of 5 stars Chocolat.......2007-05-12

I saw Chocolat at the theater when it was new, now I've bought it for my collection. I love Chocolat every time I watch it!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Message in this Movie.......2007-05-12

The philosophical sophistication of this movie is refreshing and welcome. Wonderful story, and an encouraging film for Agnostics and Freewill.

5 out of 5 stars the bitter & the sweet.......2007-05-12

i stayed away from this movie all this time because i was scared off by the "chick flick" aura it had, but if this is a CF, bring on more like it! set in a small french village in 1959, still not quite caught up with the modern world, juliette binoche stars as a single mother who wanders from place to place imparting the magical spells of chocolate, altering peoples lives while sadly not managing to alter her own. the townsfolk include a repressed mayor (alfred molina) who is her main foe with his reliance upon traditional catholicism, and a slew of fine actors (lena olin, judi dench, john wood, leslie caron -- & isnt it grand to see HER?, &c) all of whom are eventually won over, as well as johnny depp, her counterpart as an irish rover who manages to settle her down, as she does him. the movie is charming, funny, and gripping from end to end. plus, how can you NOT like a movie that hails the merits of chocolate?

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite romances.......2007-05-08

This is a nice, romantic story about being different, living well, and accepting the differences in others. Johnny Depp plays a fairly minor role, the real stars are Juliette Binoche Alfred Molina and Judi Dench.

By following up their debut thriller Bound with the 1999 box-office smash <I>The Matrix</I>, the codirecting Wachowski brothers--Andy and Larry--annihilated any suggestion of a sophomore jinx, crafting one of the most exhilarating sci-fi/action movies of the 1990s. Set in the not too distant future in an insipid, characterless city, we find a young man named Neo (Keanu Reeves). A software techie by day and a computer hacker by night, he sits alone at home by his monitor, waiting for a sign, a signal--from what or whom he doesn't know--until one night, a mysterious woman named Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) seeks him out and introduces him to that faceless character he has been waiting for: Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). A messiah of sorts, Morpheus presents Neo with the truth about his world by shedding light on the dark secrets that have troubled him for so long: "You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad." Ultimately, Morpheus illustrates to Neo what the Matrix is--a reality beyond reality that controls all of their lives, in a way that Neo can barely comprehend.

Neo thus embarks on an adventure that is both terrifying and enthralling. Pitted against an enemy that transcends human concepts of evil, Morpheus and his team must train Neo to believe that he is the chosen champion of their fight. With mind-boggling, technically innovative special effects and a thought-provoking script that owes a debt of inspiration to the legacy of cyberpunk fiction, this is much more than an out-and-out action yarn; it's a thinking man's journey into the realm of futuristic fantasy, a dreamscape full of eye candy that will satisfy sci-fi, kung fu, action, and adventure fans alike. Although the film is headlined by Reeves and Fishburne--who both turn in fine performances--much of the fun and excitement should be attributed to Moss, who flawlessly mixes vulnerability with immense strength, making other contemporary female heroines look timid by comparison. And if we were going to cast a vote for most dastardly movie villain of 1999, it would have to go to Hugo Weaving, who plays the feckless, semipsychotic Agent Smith with panache and edginess. As the film's box-office profits soared, the Wachowski brothers announced that The Matrix is merely the first chapter in a cinematically dazzling franchise--a chapter that is arguably superior to the other sci-fi smash of 1999 (you know... the one starring Jar Jar Binks). <I>--Jeremy Storey</I>

5 out of 5 stars "i'm going to enjoy watching you die, mr. anderson.".......2007-06-15

It is the movie that set new standards in the world of movie making. Terminator 2 did it in 1990, and the Matrix took it to the next level in 1999. Other films, such as Romeo Must Die, have tried to duplicate these wonderful effects, but have come up short. Not only is the Matrix a first in superb visuals and animation, but it is a dang good movie too.

If you haven't heard of the Matrix yet, this first installment explains everything. It might take a few viewings to understand every nook, but once it all fits into place it is a great theme, "is this world we live in real, or not, and what exactly defines "real". The Matrix will explain it all, in the eyes of Neo (aka Mr. Anderson as Agen Smith likes to call him), from his simple days as another man in the Matrix to becoming unplugged and becoming "The One".

The story is great. The characters are top notch and the visuals are to die for. Many even place this movie into martial arts category, as each fight scene displays true martial arts choreogrpahy intertwined with visual effects of animation. Truly though, the Matrix is a sc-fi action blast. Although there is the R rating, I have seen PG-13 films with more questionable content that this film. Most teenagers and above should be suitable for this.

Arguably the best in the trilogy, The Matrix is in my opinion that compared to the other two. Be sure to watch Reloaded and Revolutions, though not as good in story, the visuals are simplying mind-blowing, only expanding on what the first installment created.

4 out of 5 stars Beginning of a revolution.......2007-06-08

If one could rate a movie's greatness by how many other copy it, then the Matrix has to be one of the greatest movies of all time. This movie was the first US film to use "bullet time" whereby entire action scenes are filmed in slow motion slow enough to see bullets move across the air. This is also the first movie to copy martial arts fighting scenes from Chinese films, and incorporate them into an American film in totality, including freeze frame shots, 360 pans, and really high jump kicks. Combined with the great storyline, dialogue and casting, this movie became a trendsetter. Other movies like LOTR, Shrek, and even Animal Channel specials have copied this style of action films.

The storyline itself is incredible, probably the best plot of any movie released in 1999. But it is not wholly original. Earlier in the decade the sci-fi movie Dark City was released, and back-to-back viewings of both movies reveal many similarities in the story, setting and even cinematography.

The casting was great. This is by far the best movie for Keanu Reeves. This movie was also groundbreaking in having a black actor and black actress in key protagonist roles; these being Morpheus and the Oracle. The casting of Carrie-Ann Moss was also great. A younger woman would not have lent the emotional weight as Ms. Moss. The use of a sexier woman might have reminded fans more of the Pamela Anderson bomb, Barbed Wire. Carrie-Ann Moss was the perfect actress to play Trinity; athletic but not buff, attractive but not bombshell, mature but not old. Interestingly, the movie's basis on science and computers has kicked of a fashion trend in US cities with large populations of young East Asian women in the high tech fields such as Seattle or San Francisco. Walking through these downtowns one can notice the large number of hot Asian chics dressed in black in the style of Trinity.

This DVD is fairly simple; the same movie as in theaters, some special features but no extended scenes. The movie is a great watch, but since it shows so often on TV, I would not recommend buying this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars One of ten top ten films ever made.......2007-06-06

I mean how can you not list Matrix as one of the most extraordinary films in history, with one of the most intriguing storylines to ever hit the big screen. How utterly original, how truly amazed I am every single time I watch it. It is a movie that can sit in the background of a party, on multiple tv's and everyone is in tune with it. Visually brilliant and the sound is bar none. If you couldn't follow this one, or could not keep up with the fast paced and intricate plot, well then do not say you are too 'American' for a film such as this like the reviewer below. How shallow is that; instead go rent Fantastic Four, that should be trite, unmoving and American enough for you.

Matrix is one of the greatest, and always will be. Stunning, rich in depth and suspense, totally engrossing and mesmorizing.

5 out of 5 stars Comics, Comparative Religion and Kung Fu.......2007-06-05

Just about perfect, as long as you don't think too much.

In a world of nuclear ruin, I imagine your average intelligent computer could probably find a better fuel cell than a slightly warm, always hungry, constantly defecating comatose human, for whom they have to invent an elaborate mind warp, so as to, what, keep all their blood-slaves happy?

But Besides That...perfect in all regards.

With technical and martial arts grace, thanks to a long line of predecessors.

See the "Once Upon a Time in China" series (especially the first, with dvd commentary) for a great introduction to wire-fighting.

Next, pick up a concise guide to Hindu philosophy, a compendium of Dark Horse comics, and a pair of anti-gravity boots, and you've got it.

And Keanu? I'm tempted to say that making ineffectual look superhuman is the single greatest special effect, but that would undermine the great artistry that is painted all over the digital cells.

In the `nuked-world' scenes, the film looks like it was photographed in an Eastern European sewer system, and the actors let you feel the grit and mold.

A very good action movie, plus a high school treatise on comparative religion....who could ask for more?

1 out of 5 stars Too complicated.......2007-05-11

Maybe I'm too american and simple minded, but the plot twists and turns too often in the series. You have to remember every little plot twist or risk not understanding the next ones in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection for what you are paying for. .......2007-06-21

All aesthetics aside with the nice hologram box and interesting boxing it all comes in, this series of movies (or trilogy... *awaiting the e-bashing from star wars fans* )is a great collection to own.

Apart from the movies themselves, they all come with revisited discs which go into the background of each movie as well as a seperate box for documentaries on the background of character development, social/philosophical references, set design and visual technology make this a gem of a collection to own.

Top that off with the official animatrix all included in this boxset, you are left with the entire story and background from the movies seires.

To be honest with you, I dont feel the need to watch an entire movie over with commentary from the directors. I feel its a waste of time and if i do look for a particular scene's meaning I would just go to the scene instead of watching the whole thing. Each to their own though.

As are most of my reviews, a lot rides on the price of the boxset. I payed $37 dollars for it and i feel it was worth every penny. Definatly a set I will be holding onto for a while to watch with friends for a few years to come.

If you are looking to get the movies ONLY (which I'm sure a lot of the extras will come with on their extra's disc's) then maybe buying the movies seperatly is for you. However, the slight price difference gives you hours more of entertainment and a broader understanding of the saga.

5 out of 5 stars The Matrix Trilogy and Bonus DVDs.......2007-05-25

The trilogy is very good and Keanu Reeves is a good action actor in the trilogy.

4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-05-16

Very good. Obviously, towards the end they got worse and actually a little boring, but otherwise matrix and matrix reloaded were very good, and the first part of matrix revolutions was good. animatrix is very entertaining(some of them), but some are a bit strange for me.

5 out of 5 stars Great collectors item.......2007-05-12

In my opinion, there are the matrix fans, and THE MATRIX FANS. If you fall into the later, this is a must have item. All the movies, the inbetweens and production clips. Beautiful case.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Matrix Collection (The Matrix/ The Matrix Reloaded/ The Matrix Revolutions/ The Animatrix).......2007-05-07

This is a comprehensive collection of Matrix material intended for those interested in the entire breadth and depth of this artistic statement. Too often the Matrix collection is judged on the basis of the first film, which is an outstanding entertainment, but not the complete story in either content or artistic intent.

The most valuable additions this collection contains are the contrasting commentaries. One commentary is done by three film critics who give a review of the films from a view that generally doesn't see the deeper philosophical, theological, and intellectual elements of the full story. The other commentary is that of two philosophers who examine their interpretations of the deeper levels of the Matrix. This is an outstanding extra. The brothers have avoided giving their own interpretation of the story, and when asked to do a commentary for this collection, they came up with this unique set of contrasting viewpoints. It is invaluable if you are interested in the multiple interpretations of the Matrix.

Also included are the Animatrix shorts which fill in some of the pre-Matrix story. Most film is entertainment (often poor), but a few films rise to the level of art. If you have any doubts that the Matrix story is a work of art rich with multiple levels of interpretation, this collection will lay that to rest.

Guy Pearce (<I>L.A. Confidential</I>) and Joe Pantoliano (<I>The Matrix</I>) shine in this absolute stunner of a movie. <I>Memento</I> combines a bold, mind-bending script with compelling action and virtuoso performances. Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, hunting down the man who raped and murdered his wife. The problem is that "the incident" that robbed Leonard of his wife also stole his ability to make new memories. Unable to retain a location, a face, or a new clue on his own, Leonard continues his search with the help of notes, Polaroids, and even homemade tattoos for vital information.

Because of his condition, Leonard essentially lives his life in short, present-tense segments, with no clear idea of what's just happened to him. That's where <I>Memento</I> gets really interesting; the story begins at the end, and the movie jumps backward in 10-minute segments. The suspense of the movie lies not in discovering what happens, but in finding out <I>why</I> it happened. Amazingly, the movie achieves edge-of-your-seat excitement even as it moves backward in time, and it keeps the mind hopping as cause and effect are pieced together.

Pearce captures Leonard perfectly, conveying both the tragic romance of his quest and his wry humor in dealing with his condition. He is bolstered by several excellent supporting players, and the movie is all but stolen from him by Pantoliano, who delivers an amazing performance as Teddy, the guy who may or may not be on his side. <I>Memento</I> has an intriguing structure and even meditations on the nature of perception and meaning of life if you go looking for them, but it also functions just as well as a completely absorbing thriller. It's rare to find a movie this exciting with so much intelligence behind it. <I>--Ali Davis</I>

5 out of 5 stars You may want to watch it twice.......2007-05-23

Every so often, there's a movie where the hero has amnesia. Even with amnesia, a person can establish an identity in a few weeks, judge new people and surroundings, and function. In addition, such movie heroes are easy to identify with, because the audience seems to know as much as the hero.

Well, in this movie, our hero has the opposite problem, an inability to make new memories. And that kind of problem is indeed rare, and it merits some discussion.

What would you do if you couldn't form new memories? Well, you would probably be institutionalized, or cared for by family or friends. Without that, it would be important to be in familiar surroundings as much as possible, ones you would remember. You would remember your old house, your old car, and, of course, your old acquaintances. But you would not remember new possessions or friends. And you would be totally lost in a new town, while in your old one, you would know where your friends' houses were, where your bank was, where the restaurants were, and so on.

You would need to avoid strangers. And you would need a way to take notes, read and understand those notes, and keep a rough diary. Probably you would need to trust a few friends to keep a few key documents and help you update them occasionally. And you would also need a safety deposit box for notes, diary entries, money (even with a bank account, a safety deposit box would be very useful), and so forth.

The key problems would be taking notes, figuring out how to make sure you could and would read and understand those notes, going on "missions" (even a short errand would be a major event), and keeping your privacy.

For any important task, you would almost surely need to be backed up by a trusted friend, known by you from back when you were able to make memories. That friend would need to be with you at such occasions or as a minimum constantly available by phone.

You could write cryptic notes that only you could decipher, using your earlier memories. But it would be hard to be sure just what secrets you had divulged. Basically, you could keep your ideas private only by making sure nobody else saw them. And that would be tricky. That's one more place where a safety deposit box could help somewhat.

I'm writing all this in order to explain just how weird the situation is for our hero in this movie, who is basically, um, "open loop," and cut off from almost everything that is familiar. It's a fascinating and suspenseful movie, but one can see that the hero is at a tremendous disadvantage.

On the other hand, there are some things the hero knows quite well, and that makes the movie work. Rather than offer a spoiler, let me just say that I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Meeker Review.......2007-05-12

This movie was great! Absolutely crazy but awesome at the same time. You have to pay attention to what happens because the plot goes from past to present alot but its a great movie. You'll enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars I never thought this could be done.......2007-05-08

Time goes backwards but the plot goes forwards.
I think that only because of its unique structure, this movie would deserve 5 stars.
Appart from that, the production, acting, scripting, filming, etc. are very good.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing.......2007-04-27

Memento is a remarkable, one of a kind film that bears (and probably requires) multiple viewing. This film is utterly fascinating for its ability to put the viewer into someone else's head.

The DVD packaging is a bit too clever for those who just want the movie and supporting features, but it is well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Memento: The Freshmaker!.......2007-04-14

Having recently seen and enjoyed "The Lookout", another film which features a character trying to piece together his life after a traumatic head injury leaves him memory-challenged, I was inspired to go back and see its cinematic sire of sorts - the now-classic mindwarp that is Memento. And though I bought this DVD when it was released and had watched it twice (which is the minimum number of recommended viewings for this film), it's just collected dust for five years and I hadn't returned to it since.

Aptly enough, I had forgotten much of it, making much of Memento seem newly fresh yet oddly familiar, much like most of its main character Leonard's daily doings. Leonard, as we pretty much all know by now, is trying to get revenge for the killing of his wife, which is made somewhat more challenging (to say the least) by the fact that he suffers from extreme short-term memory loss and can't remember any more than ten minutes at a time. As Leonard himself will tell almost anyone he meets: "I can't make new memories - everything fades."

All of which would in itself make for an interesting movie. But what makes this film truly ingenious is the way it is constructed and edited. You know, one of my dearly-departed favorite author Kurt Vonnegut's Eight Rules for Writing Fiction is: "start as close to the end as possible." Well, Memento takes this rule - written by one of the ultimate storytellers - and pushes it to its extreme, actually starting AT the end and then working backwards - which makes for one of the all-time greatest stories.

Now, a lot of movies that are assembled in this kind of non-linear time-jumpy kind of way are gimmicky to a fault, and confusing for no good reason. But in Memento, this style of editing actually serves the story and makes it better, because - by showing us Leonard's perpetually-perplexing world out of sequence - it forces us to experience the movie in the same disoriented way that Leonard experiences the world. So as Leonard puzzles his way through his life, so do we. This makes us empathize and connect with the film's central character in a way few other movies have ever been able to achieve before or since (whichever way you happen to travel through time in your search). Of course, the fact the Guy Pearce's performance is so riveting helps us enormously with our empathy as well.

Anyway, there are about a thousand (or so) other reviews here that will tell you more about what happens in the movie, but I think that this story - more than most - relies on the surprise that each new/past detail reveals, so I don't want to ruin any of this film's revelations if you are lucky enough to be contemplating seeing this movie for the first time.

And if you are considering watching this picture for the first time (or even if you've already seen it), I would definitely encourage you to buy this DVD. Because the great thing about owning a movie like Memento, as my experience will attest, is that it rewards multiple viewings. And the depth and the detail (in addition to the design) of the film ensure that each viewing is made fresh with new insight and understanding.

In the end, Memento is so much more than just a non-linear, well-crafted crime thriller. It's also an exploration of what makes up a person's identity, and an examination of the malleability of experience. Ultimately, Memento shows us how all our memories are fallible, and - to some degree - we all have to use devices like Leonard uses to remember things: whether it's jotting down phone numbers, taking pictures on our vacations, or (in my case just now) watching a DVD to remind you of all the things you loved about a movie in the first place.

In <I>Red Planet</I>, the only thing thicker than the Martian atmosphere (which is breathable, by the way) is the layer of clichés that nearly smothers a formulaic beat-the-clock plot. Science fiction fans are sure to be forgiving, however, because the film is reasonably intelligent, boasts a few dazzling sequences, and presents fascinating technology in the year 2057. We don't know how the Mars-1 spaceship gets to Mars in only six months (newfangled propulsion, no doubt), but we do get some cool diagnostic readouts on tinfoil scrolls, an abundance of well-designed hardware, and a service-robot-turned-villain that's a high-tech hybrid of RoboCop, Bruce Lee, and a slinky panther with plenty of lethal attitude.

The oxygen in the Martian atmosphere has resulted from nascent efforts of terraforming, made necessary by Earth's overpolluted condition. Mars-1 has been dispatched to determine why the terraforming is failing, and upon arrival everything goes inevitably haywire. Nearly two hours, three deaths, and multiple crises later (including the discovery of a Martian life form), "space janitor" Val Kilmer and his ultracompetent commander (Carrie-Anne Moss from <I>The Matrix</I>) have collaborated to set things right, capped off by second dose of the wretched narration that bookends the movie. Hoary material, to be sure, and as a veteran of TV commercials making his feature debut, director Anthony Hoffman is clearly more comfortable with flashy visuals than depth of character. Still, he keeps things humming right along. A perfectly suitable companion to another 2000 sci-fi thriller, <I>Pitch Black</I>, Red Planet is a fine way to kill a couple of hours. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Where did we come from. Just watch this movie and learn about a very likely theory. Amazing movie.

5 out of 5 stars Space Adventure.......2007-02-15

Great movie, good actor's within, a real fun one for us who like the space type movies, worth to be added to your collection.

3 out of 5 stars It's Just O.K........2007-01-19

Plot line started out good and ended bad. Oh well, great special effects though.

2 out of 5 stars An empty Sci-Fi thriller.......2006-11-21

This is one of those movies where you're just waiting for something to happen but never does. It just meanders along and relies on its special fx, which are quite good, to give the movie any substance at all. A couple of good performances by the cast without being outstanding, but there was only so much they could do with a shallow script. They look lost and wanting to give more but are restricted. There are better, a lot better sci-fi movies out there than this one. Special features aren't very interesting either.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining SciFi.......2006-11-09

I found the movie entertaining and I'm not a hard core science fiction fan. It was somewhat cliche, but movies that come out of Hollywood are almost all "formula" productions because the studios feel that they'll make a profit if they do it that way.

On to the movie - the plot was interesting, the cinematography was excellent and the acting was good.

It's not going to blow sunshine up your skirt but it's an entertaining film.

<I>Matrix</I> writer-directors Larry and Andy Wachowski commissioned seven artists from Japan, America and Korea to make nine short films set in the world of their feature trilogy. Some of the top anime directors contributed to this anthology, including Yoshiaki Kawajiri (<I>Ninja Scroll</I>), Koji Morimoto (<I>Robot Carnival</I>), and Shinchiro Watanabe (<I>Cowboy Bebop</I>). Some of the films tie directly into the narrative of the live-action movies. Drawn in a style reminiscent of Jean "Moebius" Giraud, Mahiro Maeda's <I>The Second Renaissance</I> (Part I & Part II) depicts the human-machine wars that caused the enslavement of humanity and the creation of the Matrix. The duel between two flamboyantly costumed Kabuki warriors in Kawajiri's <I>Program</I> is an expanded version of the cybernetic training Neo (Keanu Reeves) undergoes in the first <I>Matrix</I> film. Watanabe evokes the look of old newspaper photographs in <I>A Detective Story,</I> which falls outside the storyline of the features. Fast-paced, violent and grim, <I>The Animatrix</I> is an uneven but intriguing compilation that represents a new level in the ongoing cross-pollination between Japanese animation and American live action. (Not rated, suitable for ages 16 and older: considerable violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol use) <I>--Charles Solomon</I>

5 out of 5 stars Great Backstory!.......2007-03-30

I might not like all of the animation from every story, but every story is truly amazing. It gives the back story to the movies and proves that we are to blame for everything. I'd say that most stories will have you glued to the screen, and even in tears. The final story is about humans capturing a robot and playing with it to make it friendly, and at the end, it tries to save one of the women's life. It is a sad story, overall, this is a thing that is worth getting if you are a fan.

5 out of 5 stars Animatrix is outstanding.......2007-01-25

Aside from the great animation, the stories have meaning and strangely speaks of string theory at its most interesting level. For those who find theMatrix movie meaningful, Animatrix fills in the gaps.

5 out of 5 stars A lot better than it's live action counterpart.......2007-01-02

-The shorts start with "Final Flight of the Osiris" which lets us know where the scans that we hear about from "Reloaded" came from. After it's over we move into what I think should have been in the movie which is the "The Second Renaissance". It lets us know the whole history of how the war between man and machine began, who struck first, and why the machines are so hostile to us. I would have loved to see a live action version of that for the movie but the version we see hear is also very nice. The other stories "Kid's Story", "Beyond", "A Detective's Story", "Matriculated", "Program", and "World Record" tell different stories that range from a kid that commits suicide only to wake up in the real world to a wheel chaired bound athlete that almost breaks out of the Matrix due to his will to push himself. Out of the nine stories I'd say I loved about 8 of them, the only one I can't stand and never watch is the weird one with the program that is trapped inside the matrix or something like that. It's just one big mess of a story and never really holds any interest.

-If I had to pick 3 stories out of the 9 to live on an Island with I'd go with "A Detective's Story", "Beyond", and "The Second Renaissance Part 2". All three have their own unique visual style and all have no connection to each other that I know of. I love "A Detective's Story" because it lets you know how desperate the machines are to capture Trinity and also lets you see Trinity in a completely different light. The Detective in the story is a very likable man who doesn't realize that he's being used by the machines till it's too late. It's a very nice story with a sad ending and one of the best in my opinion, "The Second Renaissance Part 2" is great because that's when you really get to see why the sky in the real world so messed up and also get the answer to the question that Morpheus asked in the first movie which is whether it was us or the machines that struck first. It's told in this mystical way computer way that feels like you're watching a documented history than a fiction animated story and it also helps explain some lines from the 3rd Matrix from the architect especially the line "What do you think I am, human?"

-My favorite story is "Beyond" which a very, very simple story of a girl looking for her cat that discovers a building that no gravity which some kids take full advantage of. I just love how mystical and dreamlike it is, the weird Hisashi like music also helps in creating that mystical aura. The trick to Neo's power is not that he's super human but that he can manipulate the codes in the Matrix and make it into anything he wants. If he wants to fly then he'll remove the codes for gravity and start flying or if he wants to stop bullets he'll just remove the codes that propel it and they stop. That concept is further explored in this story. It's a really great piece of writing because there's not a whole lot that goes on there but just rather you watch kids have fun in the with broken codes for gravity.

-One thing this does a lot better than the movies ever did was to show you the size and scope of the Matrix itself. In the movie you're confined to one city and that's it but in this we pretty much go all around to see what a vast and detailed program that the Matrix is. A couple of the stories should have definitely being in the movie too. "Second Renaissance" and "Flight of the Osiris" should have being in the movie instead of us watching Neo get into one long pointless fight scene after the other. I can understand why because of length they might have cut it but they could have at least given us a truncated version of it.

-I know "The Matrix" movies are suppose to be over but where the movies end that's where stuff like this can go on so I'm hoping that we get more short stories that are as engaging as the ones featured in this pack.

4 out of 5 stars The Animatrix.......2006-10-29

Over all great movie(s), however, in my opinion the live action movies are better.

5 out of 5 stars In some ways better than the three films.......2006-09-20

I like the Animatrix very much. It is a wonderful walk through the world of the Matrix and it provides us with a history of the world leading up to the creation of the matrix. Some of the stories work well and some work less well, but the diversity of the visions is engaging. All the visions are quite short.

In many respects, the Animatrix is better than the films, which seemed to get shallower and shallower as the story went on. The Matrix writers should have had a closer look at the works of William Gibson and other science fiction writers who have been dealing with VR worlds and realities for some years and doing it in a far more sophisticated way.

Some of the animations in the Animatrix would have been even better if they were "fleshed out" into longer films, some are just right and a couple, like "World Record" could have been dropped completely with no real loss.

I return to the Animatrix DVD often. The DVDs of the films, a lot less often.
