seduction not from 1 movie, but from 3.......2007-04-12
I'm a Milano fan so i have to go with number 2: Lily, as the best. Just a nice good old couple of young seduction stories with a few interesting personalities.
Andy
(sigh)(rolls 2d0) I shouldn't have to upvote this kinda stuff..........2007-04-12
IDGI... AMAZON RECCOMENDATIONS ARE USUALLY SO ON-TARGET.
whoever is responsible for recommending THIS to me must've had abou' as much empathic intuition as a bowling ball thas a liiiittle bit oerdosed on crack cocaine or sumethin', if ya' catch my drift..
IDGI...I've always been more of an Ally Sheedy, Short Circuit, Sentimentalist of sorts...(rolling 2d0 again) I only turn to this stuff to distract myself from solitude and mean-spirited, judgmental looks of others...(sigh), its enough to make a grown man...
Skin flicks, anyone?.......2007-03-28
While the first installment with Drew Barrymore is fairly good, the subsequent films are just reasons to get a couple of hot actresses naked. The storyline of Lily has nothing to do with the first one, and only mentions someone named "Ivy" in passing. New Seduction shows the main character being Ivy's sister, Violet. What the two sequels seemed to have missed is that "Ivy" was a nickname given to the main character in the first film and not her actual name...but I digress. Watch the first, then, as another reviewer said, turn down the volume for Parts 2 and 3.
Ignore the Non-Philistine Naysayers.......2007-03-12
It's simple - Jaime Pressly in the hottest thing she ever did. These kinds of films are often all gong and no dinner, but not in the case of "The New Seduction". You'll flip your toupee watching it, or I'll eat my shorts. Also, Ms. Milano makes the second entry watchable. What's that? Don't care for the plot, music, story, acting, etc.? Just turn the sound down and enjoy. Get'chr priorities straight, son.
3 terrible movies, 1 low price........2006-11-09
These 3 awful soft core erotic thrillers are some of the worst movies ever made.
The only reason to watch them is to see a 17 year old Drew Barrymore strut her stuff in the 1st film playing a very bad girl (though she doesn't do any actual nudity, her body double was Jamie Pressly ironically enough.)
The 2nd film has Alyssa Milano looking really nice in the buff.
And the 3rd film has Jamie Pressly discarding her clothing for most of the film.
But as for the films themselves? Terrible.
At least in the 1st film, they seemed to actually be reaching for something more artistic than just exploitative trash, but due to a pathetic script, they ended failing. Didn't register as a blip at all pretty much during it's original theatrical run after the whole Drew-Barrymore-sheds-her-good-girl-image press had run its course.
The filmmakers involved with the 2nd and 3rd films just didn't even try. They were also done as straight-to-video releases.
The films are all 3 shown in their unmatted full frame theatrical ratios, which actually helps as the full frame versions show some more flesh in some scenes.
These are also the more explicit unrated versions of all 3 versions as well. The pointless R rated versions available on the old DVD's have been jettisoned.
Only for super, super hardcore fans of the 3 actresses involved in the films.
There's nothing at all otherwise to be gained from watching these 3 cinematic abominations.

Danielle Steel"s Changes.......2006-11-04
If you have read Danielle Steel's books, you will recognise the style which is perfectly translated onto the screen - Michael Nouri and Cheryl Ladd are well cast together in this film about the trials and tribulations of merging two existing families into one, whilst also merging two people in love, but with demanding careers. The film is well crafted, and if you have not seen any of the other films of DS books, will definitely leave you wanting to see the others as well.
(:D).......2006-06-11
I'm not a Danielle Steel fan i would rather watch some of the book's turn TV movies ....CHANGES was a good movie i was hook on it its like the brady bunch 20 yrs later in a way with a little more romance..the ending was just sweet for me i'm a sucker for romantic endings....
Good Movie to Watch at Midnight.......2006-05-17
I caught this movie on the WE channel at midnight. It was a tear-jerking and at times annoying movie. I didn't care so much for the quick resolution of everyone making up, however, the twins at the end was an interesting touch. Typical Danielle Steel based movie. I've seen others.
I'm Glad That It's Finally on DVD!.......2005-10-07
This movie Changes is based on a book by Danielle Steele. I didn't read the book but I had seen this movie and I'm glad that it's finally on DVD. It's a dramatic romance movie and it stars Cheryl Ladd (Charlie's Angels) and handsome Michael Nouri (Flashdance) and they were both great!
Chick Flick.......2005-08-02
5 stars 'cause it's a great Saturday afternoon, I got the blues, nothin' else to do, kind of day. Total chick flick - which is a good thing! Get the chips and ice-cream, sit back and unwind with this movie.

They're back, they're beautiful, and they mean business--but in a sweet way. <I>Charlie's Angels: The Complete Third Season</I> finds Kris Munroe (Cheryl Ladd), sister of departed Angel Jill Munroe (Farrah Fawcett), well ensconced in the Charles Townsend Investigation agency. Jill, however, isn't entirely absent from the scene: Fawcett turns up in at least three episodes, not quite ready to shake her old job despite the lure of car racing and a handsome beau (Stephen Collins). But enough about her: the current incarnation of Charlie's team kicks off the season with a two-part mystery set in Las Vegas. Dean Martin plays a maverick casino owner who believes he's being "gaslighted," i.e., made the target of psychological harassment by an unknown enemy. Trouble is, some of his employees and friends are getting hurt and even killed by this same assailant. The girls, including brainy Sabrina Duncan (Kate Jackson) and streetwise Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith), plus mirthful supervisor Bosley (David Doyle), go undercover to root out a plot to ruin Martin's character. (Sure, Dino romances one of them: Sabrina.)
The rest of the season follows the usual <I>Charlie's Angels</I> formula of relying on the cast's appealing personalities and substantive, anti-bimbo characters, while also getting them (well, not Jackson so much) in various states of undress as quickly as possible. An accent on stories requiring the wearing of leotards and showgirl costumes certainly helps the cause, but there are plenty of non-exploitational episodes as well. Among the best programs is "Angel Come Home," in which Jill arrives at Charlie's by surprise after receiving a phony emergency cable in Europe from someone claiming to be Kris. Eager to investigate, Jill soon hooks up with an old friend (Horst Buchholz) developing a new car engine targeted by enemies. "Angels in Springtime" capitalizes on a creepy suggestion of lesbian incarcerators running an expensive spa for women. "Haunted Angels" is a spooky tale of a young man's demanding spirit being channeled, from beyond the grave, through a terrified woman. It could be real or it could be a scam; only the Angels can find out. "Counterfeit Angels" finds a trio of bank robbers claiming to be Kris, Kelly, and Sabrina; the girls fight for their innocence. Finally, a great episode from its era (1979), "Disco Angels," gets the ladies exactly where they belong: on a dance floor. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Golden Oldies Still The Best.......2007-05-13
I bought this dvd for a friend they said they loved the tv series and wanted to enjoy some nostalgia. This boxed set is well worth purchasing.
Charlies Angels Season 3.......2007-03-22
Great music played many different ways: The trick of the 1970s soundtracks that worked very well in Six Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman, and 3 other shows which WE NEED TO SEE RELEASED ON DVD: Man from Atlantis, Search (PROBE) and "The Magician". Hint hint product owners, take up this request and make some money.
Season 3 has original score for every episode, with the best version of the main theme played in the dramatic apprehension of villain scene in "Disco Angels".
Also enjoy guest return appearances of Farrah Fawcette (3 times), and well written stories like "Angel on my Mind" and "Terror on Skis".
Packaging is good, with airdates and episode synopses on the back of each slimline double DVD case cover.
Peter.
The Best Show Ever On Television.......2007-02-26
Once upon a time, three little girls went to the police academy. and they were each assigned very hazardous duties, but I took them all away from all that and now they work for me. My name is Charlie. Those famous words started the all time greatest TV show in history Charlie's Angels. When the pilot aired in March of 1976, it starred Farrah Fawcett Majors as Jill who was the athletic angel, Jaclyn Smith as Kelly who was the streetwise angel, Kate Jackson as Sabrina who was the cool smart, multilingual leader, David Doyle as John Bosley, David Ogden Stiers as Scott Woodville and John Forsythe as the voice of Charlie. The original concept of the Angels was to have one brunette, one red-head, and one blonde. Kate Jackson was aboard from the beginning of the project, and was set to play the lead angel. Farrah Fawcett was the next to join; filling the blonde role, but then the producers dropped the hair color concept and brought in Jaclyn Smith to complete the trio. The pilot for the 1976-1981 TV series focuses on the Angels' very first case. When a wealthy winegrower disappears, the three private investigators go undercover at the vineyard to track down the whereabouts of the body. Many of the scenes used in the opening credits of the show are from this pilot episode. Then in the fall of September of 1976 ABC introduce the three stunning, sexy and young former policewoman, private detectives working for the Charles Townsend Detective Agency with the entire crew back except David Ogden Stiers. In the opening sequence of the first season, the city where the Angels attended the police academy was never mentioned. The wealthy Charlie Townsend, their never-seen boss, relayed assignments via a speaker telephone. The Angels worked with their trusty male counter-part, John Bosley. It wasn't until the next season that we found out where the various Angels got their police training. After only 23 episodes, Farrah left the show at the end of the first season. When Farrah Fawcett left the series, her absence was explained by having her character Jill become a professional racing driver on the NASCAR circuit. Along with a new Angel, the show received a new time slot. The Angels remained on Wednesday nights, but moved from 10pm to 9pm. This change in time opened up a whole world of new viewers who wanted to know what the big fuss was all about and kept the "Angels" right where they belong - on top of the ratings! Kris was introduced in the second season opening two part series titled Angels in Paradise. The 1977-1978 season ended with high ratings, proved that Kris, Cheryl Ladd, was every bit as popular with the viewers as Farrah. The third year was the only season that there were no cast changes. It was also the second season when we found out that where the Angels graduate from the police academy. Jill, Kelly and Sabrina were all former members of the Los Angeles Police Department. Kris went to the police academy in San Francisco. In the 1979-1980 season, the answer came with Shelley Hack, a model who had been prominent in Revlon's "Charlie" Perfume ads and commercials. Shelley entered The Townsend Office as Tiffany Welles, an Ivy League scholar who also was a graduate from the Boston Police Academy. Spelling and Goldberg had the idea that with this new Angel/model at the helm, she could bring an elegant and classy touch to Charlie's trio! Kate Jackson''s absence was explained by having Sabrina getting married and starting a family. Shelley Hack who graduated from the police academy and worked as a police officer in Boston replaced Sabrina. The writers treaded lightly as they tried to figure out how to make Tiffany Welles the new "Sabrina Duncan". The 1979-1980 seasons' problem was the sudden decline in ratings. The series found itself in the top 20's instead of the top 10 were it had been for the last three years. The ratings drop was directed at the new Angel and at the end of the season, Shelley was let go of her detective duties. Thus, beginning, another hunt for a new Angel! By 1980, Charlie's Angels was beginning to feel its age and was declining fast. Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg wanted to go with a fresh new image. After careful consideration, they decided to hire virtually unknown actress, Tanya Roberts. This time around, the character would be a model-turned-detective, street-smart Julie Rogers. The new Angel showed her face in the three-hour 1980-1981 season premiere on November 30, 1980. High hopes were placed on Charlie's newest Angel to pull the series out its failing ratings. To help give it an added boost, the Angels were sent to Hawaii for the first six episodes. Hawaii wasn't only chosen to intrigue the audience but to keep the Angels scantily clad in swimsuits! Charlie's opening monologue has now undergone a complete overhaul. It begins, "Once upon a time, there were three beautiful girls. Two of them graduated from the police academy. The other graduated from a top school for models. And they each reaped the rewards of their exciting careers..." For her "reward," Julie is shown jogging on a treadmill while promoting a drink called Joggerade. Kelly drives her third different identical Mustang of the series after the previous one was blown up in"Toni's Boys". Bosley looks over brochures of Hawaii in anticipation of the Angels' possible assignment there. Charlie arranges for Julie to receive a probationary investigator's license and begin working with Kris and Kelly. My all time favorite Charlie's Angel show titled Waikiki Angels. The Angels are not pleased to learn that Bosley and Charlie have tried to arrange for them to teach a lifeguard course at a new hotel. Claiming that they need practice on their rescues, they throw Bosley into the pool. Unfortunately, at this point, the audience was no longer keeping up with the Angels antics. In February 1981, the show went on hiatus and wasn't shown again until June of 1981. Charlie's Angels was not winning any viewers in the summer of '81 with its remaining episodes. The show that had made women crime fighters popular during the 1970's was taken off the air. Charlie's Angels was a huge success the moment it hit the airwaves in 1976. The Angels were on gum cards, doll boxes, T-shirts, board games, puzzles and posters. They also graced the covers of Time magazine on November 22, 1976 and TV Guide on September 25, 1976. Charlie's Angels has appeared on TV Guide Cover four times, Sept, 25, 1976; Jaclyn, Farrah and Kate, February 18, 1978; Jaclyn, Kate and Cheryl, December 29, 1979; Jaclyn, Cheryl and Shelley and the last on December 18, 1993; Kate, Farrah and Jaclyn. If you wanted to hire the Angels you had to call the office phone number was 555-0267. Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith) was the only Angel to last the entire series. Kelly was an orphan. John Forsythe' was never on the set - his voice was recorded, and dubbed in later. The Angels all drove Ford automobiles. Jill (and later Kris) drove a Cobra, Kelly drove a Mustang, and Sabrina drove a Pinto. For the record, Bosley drove a Ford L.T.D. Although in most episodes Charlie was heard but never seen, he did actually appear in a couple of episodes, but his face was never shown. Kelly is the only Angel to have been shot throughout the run of the show. Sabrina was the only Angel that was previously married. She was married to a fellow officer when she was still a cop but the marriage ended in divorce.
Just WONDERFUL.......2007-01-11
Grazie
To love it is to own it........2007-01-09
This is a truly great buy for any Charles Angels fans. To have the whole season in 1 package. It is also the original Angels which I think were the best.

Jenkins (Left Behind series, Hometown Legend), Though None Go With Me is the heartwarming and inspirational story of Elizabeth Leroy Bishop (Cheryl Ladd, Las Vegas, Charlie's Angels), a remarkable woman whose faith is tested with each tragedy endured on an extraordinary life journey. It's 1951 and America is caught in the Korean War, but a world away in Three Rivers, Elizabeth Leroy (Amy Grabow, General Hospital) is caught in her own personal struggle. She longs to escape her small town life and set out in pursuit of a career but a twist of fate and the promise of true love forces her to stay. She meets the town's new handsome and devout minister with whom she quickly falls in love and plans to marry but when he leaves for Korea to do God's work, she is heartbroken. The events that follow alter Elizabeth's life forever and truly test not only her faith and inner strength but her resilience as well.

True Life.......2007-06-08
There are no villains in this movie. There are two nice men who are interested in the same wonderful woman. It is true to life. It is inspirational. It is an excellent movie. I recommend it to all persons and all ages.
Well worth watching ... ! .......2007-04-12
I took a chance with this movie, not knowing what to expect, and I was very pleasantly surprised at how wonderful it was! Such a touching and moving story ... I have to admit the acting was not the best (excluding Cheryl Ladd of course who's always wonderful), but actually, the script is so good it really didn't seem to matter ! Highly recommended for everyone !
A Mixed Review.......2007-01-20
I thought the acting was BAD; no one was believable. But, despite that, the story line was very moving. I will be thinking about the message for a long time to come.
Highly recommended.......2006-12-27
I would highly recommend this movie. It is a heartwarming family movie that focuses on what's important. It's well written and the actors and actresses are very convincing. It's also nice to see a movie that focuses on God and the importance of faith.
Uplifting and entertaining.......2006-12-17
I read the novel this film is based on years ago and I've never forgotten it. The movie stayed true to the novel's themes and is a wonderful, uplifting story that refutes the idea that bad things never happen to Christians. But it also shows how God can carry us through when tragedy happens and even use our lives as an example and an encouragement to others. Very moving and memorable, and a movie I wouldn't be ashamed to recommend to family and friends of any age.

Danielle Steel's Now & Forever.......2007-02-20
I was not particularly fond of this one movie and can't put my finger on it. Not sure if it was the actor/actress or just the story itself Sorry!
Danielle Steel's Now & Forever.......2006-11-10
A good story line and Cheryl Ladd is, as always, magic in this movie. She is a strong, loving wife who has been betrayed by her husband but she stands by him regardless and in the end love prevails. Great entertainment!
A Lesser Known Danielle Steel Movie.......2005-05-17
This film is not known as widely as some of the other films based on the novels of Danielle Steel most likely because it was not shown on commerical TV. Released in 1983, this film is rated PG-13 due to the subject matter (rape). I originally read the book when it first came out years ago and loved it! The film is very faithful to the novel. Cheryl Ladd is beautiful as ever and does a fantastic job portraying the 'wronged wife'- This is one of the darker stories by Danielle Steel, but does have the romantic story line that she is famous for. I would highly recommend this movie for the adult viewer.

Christmas in mid Summer.......2007-05-28
This is a well done, well written movie about finding Love and having a second chance to redeem it. My family will enjoy this story for many years.

Just Eve.......2007-02-17
I was really surpised on how this movie was so different-To go back in time & change your life, was really unpredictable. It was just great!!!
Heartwarming and good for an evening in................2007-02-16
For anyone who has ever longed for a second chance with the one they "gave away".....for anyone who has ever wished they could go back and do something over in a different way...have that second chance to say things that went unsaid or maybe to try and say them better...or even just the urge to re-experience a special point in time when "feeling" was what life was all about, this movie should be right up your alley.
It is a sweet and charming little love story that i have actually watched a few times.......and still like it!
Unwrap The Christmas Joy.......2007-02-12
I must say I enjoyed this movie very much. It is a retrospective of Eve's
choices. Sometimes an individual looks back on a situation wishing that they could reexamine a decision. This movie is a fine example that Christmas is a magical time. That a person can get what they wish for.
Eve looks for happiness in New York, but she has to go home to Oregon and the road lest traveled. She finds happiness with Scott by making her Christmas wish.

very heartwarming to see someone get a second chance from a terrible mistake she made the first time. she almost makes the same mistake, but love conquers all.

During the Vietnam War, a doctor and nurse meet and fall in love.
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorites!.......2007-05-21
I have always been a Ken Wahl fan but this movie goes beyond that. Why they don't put it on DVD has always been a mystery to me. There is even some very realistic feeling Vietnam footage in the film (yes, I was there). My wife and I both like this movie. Anyone who likes a good love story can't help but like this film.
An old-fashioned war film but set in Vietnam.......2007-03-12
I saw this video while visiting a friend and pleasantly surprised. Drama, action and human interest makes Purple Hearts an exceptional winner.
I came here to buy the DVD as I do not have a VCR and was equally surprised to discover that Purple Hearts is dying as a VHS. What a waste!
This movie would have been more at home in the post-WWII era with such films as From Here to Eternity. I thought the film held the utmost respect for military personnel in the war - the attention to technical detail was superb, and the final credits list no less than six military technical advisors. In addition, I was most impressed by the convincing battle scenes, easily in the same league of "Boys in Company C" and even "Platoon." Make no mistake: this is a war movie with a romantic story angle, not a romance movie with a war story angle, and I believe the writer and director makes this important distinction very clear.
I guess this movie was just released at the wrong time, when dope-smoking audiences wanted only angry, hard-hitting anti-establishment, social commentary.
Great love story!.......2007-01-25
This is both a love story and a war story. I'm not big on war movies, however, this is one of my favorite films. I wish they would bring it out on DVD.
This story is about a doctor (Wahl) that enlists in the service during war time in what seems to be an escape from the life that he was leading. He is engaged to be married and is set up to have his own practice when he gets home. She (Ladd) is a nurse that he meets after transporting a critical patient to the area hospital. There is instant attraction between them. He starts to take some risks in order to be able to see her. He also risks his life in order to spend some R&R time with her. He realizes that he never really loved his fiance and falls in love with her (Ladd).
It is a wonderful film and depicts some of the many hardships and heartbreaks of war. The acting is a little hammy at times, however the storyline is fabulous. I would highly recommend watching this film.
Most Memorable Films.......2005-08-14
I gave this film 5 stars and perhaps I did over-rate it. But not by that much if one takes into consideration how much staying-power a film can have. This poignant drama of war and love still resonates with me years later as one of the finest Vietnam era films ever made. As others have noted, this movie is long...long overdue to be put out on a dvd. Com'on Hollywood...Get on the stick!
Purple Hearts.......2005-03-21
This was a great flick. Why don't they make this on DVD?? Who would one call to get the ball rolling?
Thanks

Like the book it is named after and based on, <I>Permanent Midnight</I> is a chronicle of downfall. Jerry Stahl, the story goes, showed promise when doing shifts as a porn writer for <I>Hustler</I> and <I>Penthouse</I>, and his promise landed him in the exact center of television's hottest shows of the 1980s. Alas, Stahl also brought with him a gargantuan appetite for drugs, most damagingly heroin. The film begins with Stahl, played by Ben Stiller, working in a fast-food chain on his way back to society from the drug-addled skids and recovery. He's lured away from work, where in a hotel room with Maria Bello (as Kitty) he begins detailing his fall from TV's top (where he wrote for shows like <I>Alf</I> and <I>Moonlighting</I>, among others). Director David Veloz does great work in leading viewers through the episodes in addiction and excess, making the action seem naturally odd. There are priceless shots of Stahl and his coke-smoking buddy on an upper floor of a high-rise smoking and leaping into the windows--which don't break, of course. Stiller does a classy job of staying monochromatically zoomed in on scoring and shooting dope. He's sweaty and freaked out at the right times and grimy and desperate, too. The movie's a sad one, with Stahl's journey taking him through an arranged marriage (which benefited him enormously) to the couple's having a baby to getting busted on a rare occasion alone with the infant. It's a visceral script, replete with lots of intravenous drug use and Stahl/Stiller creating a recurring motif out of shooting the bloody drawback from the syringe onto the ceiling, making a mad little scribble. <I>--Andrew Bartlett</I>
Customer Reviews:
Maria Bello as Savior; Amen Brother!.......2007-03-29
This little movie, "Permanent Midnight," almost makes it. I had a four-star review going for it right until the final scene where what could have been a capstone moment, simply misses the mark. When Brad Delp, God rest his soul, former lead singer of Boston belts out in "Peace of Mind","Now everybody's got advice they just keep on givin' / Doesn't mean too much to me / Lot's of people out to make believe their livin' / Can't decide who they should be," I think he must have had a movie like "Permanent Midnight" in mind. The movie really has an identity crisis going...is it a redemptive tale, is it a cautionary tale that screams drugs just aren't all that great, or is it a love story? The last scene where Jerry Stahl, aptly played by Ben Stiller, leaves one lost wishing that the movie had at least been one of those stories...not vainly attempting, and failing, to be all of them.
The movie is cool enough. The soundtrack is steady, not stellar. Does it glamorize the LA drug scene? Not really. When Stiller's character shoots up heroin again and again in bathroom stalls or wherever he can score a hit, and then sprays the bloody backwash from the needle over the bathroom ceiling the message is pretty clear...no one you know, love, care about should be coming any where near the drug scene. Heroin and any other addictive illegal substances (and some legal ones too) has this innate potential to completely and utterly destroy lives. As a drug movie, "Permanent Midnight," falls just short of telling the tale of complete and other woe. Movies that come to mind that really hit home the cautionary aspect of powerful anti-drug messaging are, "Requiem for a Dream," which has several scenes that want to make you look away from the screen; Steven Soderbergh's excellent social and political commentary on America's drug war and drug culture, "Traffic," and lastly but not leastly the movie with Nicolas Cage and Elizabeth Shue in Las Vegas where Cage ends up drinking himself right to death. Those films work. Those films are clear in their message, powerful in their story. "Permanent Midnight," starts to work on several levels but ultimately falls short in them all.
Ben Stiller turns in a very engaging performance as the Jewish writer, brilliant in his writing, but with a habit the size of "Utah." When I first read that on the jacket descriptor..."the size of Utah," I thought it might be one of those Mormon-themed flicks that seem to be so popular of the last 2-3 years...but alas, "Permanent Midnight," has really nothing to do with Mormons and everything to do with drugs and love. Elizabeth Hurley is well Elizabeth Hurley. Maria Bello is one of the finest actresses out there continuing to score in powerful roles in minor films so her career flies under the radar but she seems to pick and choose roles that work for her. If the movie were a redemptive love story where Bello's ex-junky character creates some true catharsis for Stahl I would have been right there. But as it is...I say look somewhere else film buffs for your love story, drug story, and ultra cool hip story. "Permanent Midnight," tries to be all these things in doses but in the end leaves you searching for blue veins...not with needles mind you but to find a pulse. ...mmw
Episodic but riveting.......2007-01-11
Movies rarely hold the same allure as the books from which they arise and that's the case here. "Permanent Midnight" portrays the harrowing experinece of a television script writer that was also a heroin addict.
Ben Stiller stars as Jerry Stahl, whose autobiography is the basis for the film. Stahl appears in a brief role as a physician treating his own (through Stiller) addiction. This is an interesting insofar as the physician -- the real life drug addict -- is very downbeat about Stiller's chance of kicking heroin for its substitute.
Elsewhere, a lot of today's A-list actors -- Owen Wilson (who had a middle initial in the credits), Maria Bello (who got great reviews in "A History of Violence"), Elizabeth Hurley, Sandra Oh, Cheryl Ladd and Jeanene Garofolo -- lend a lot of credibility to this episodic treatment. Probably most riveting, and most revolting, are Stiller's regular scenes of drug use...during breaks in meetings at work, in the bathroom during parties, while taking care of his child. In another scene, he interviews for a job with a TV producer while high. The flick concludes with sound bytes from interviews Stahl did with TV talking heads (Morey and Tom Snyder) with Stiller digitally added to the scene.
I thought Stiller transformed himself into a serious actor for the role and the good supporting cast clearly helps; still the film is too episodic to score higher than average. This biopic is mature fare and sometimes very difficult to watch, especially a scene where Stiller, in the car with an infant, mainlines heroin through a vein in his neck. It also loses points since none of the actors show any signs of age as its chronology progresses.
Still, there's often something interesting going on or something you probably haven't seen before by such name actors. There was a lot more drug use here than in "Trainspotting" where the cast was compprised 100 percent of heroin addicts. So check this out if you're up to it; you might find it rewarding.
Permanent boredom!........2006-04-27
Ben Stiller stars in this independent drama film about a top Hollywood scriptwriter Jerry Stahl who appears to have the perfect life he has lots of cash, an attractive wife and a baby on the way but Jerry harbours a secret drug addiction and when things get realy bad he checks himself into a rehab clinic. Whilst there he meets Kitty (Maria Bello) and together they plan for the future, first of all we have all ready seen better movies about drug addiction that ruins a persons entire career and life so what makes this film better? well absolutely nothing the acting was realy bad and the storyline doesn't seem to go anywhere. The character Jerry Stahl is the same loser junkie at the end you think that this guy would learn a lesson by not making the same mistakes but it just seems pointless I'd rather watch Zoolander.
Requiem for a Permanent Midnight with Jesus' Son and the Drugstore Cowboys.......2005-12-05
Admittedly I'm guessing here, but it would seem that the lurid fascination of drug-themed films has diminished considerably in recent years. Or if I can only speak for myself, I guess I can say that their fascination for me has dwindled. When PERMANENT MIDNIGHT came out (to mixed reviews) in 1998, I made a mental note that, while I probably wouldn't want to pay theater prices to see the movie, I'd make a point to catch it when it came out on video.
Well, it's taken me over five years to get around to finally seeing it. Whether it was those mixed reviews or the fact that films about substance abuse have lost their ability to shock--or for that matter, to illuminate--I can't say. But this is one case where the (majority of the) critics had pretty much gotten it right. The movie IS worth seeing--mainly for the acting and for a few startlingly effective scenes--but it's probably not a must-see and certainly not a "must own" for most viewers.
As a supposed "breakthrough" role for Ben Stiller, the results are also kind of mixed. Yes, he did pull off this demanding role, impressively so; and no, he hasn't done all that much dramatically since. He's been in some very good films (ROYAL TENENBAUMS,especially) but hasn't had the chance to stretch significantly since PERMANENT MIDNIGHT. That's a shame, but that's also show biz. He keeps working, at least.
The rest of the cast is also impressive. Elizabeth Hurley also gets a chance to prove her acting ability for once, and Maria Bello who perhaps is still best known for her years on ER, is pretty impressive in an underwritten role. (She's essentially a framing device with a heart of gold.) Owen Wilson is always worth watching. (Am I the only one who thinks he looks like a young, blond Dennis Hopper? If anyone ever wanted to do a father-son junkie movie, they'd make for perfect casting.) Janeane Garofalo and Cheryl Ladd make effective cameo appearances. And there's even a pre-GLADIATOR Connie Nielsen on board here as a rich German junkie who seems to revel in "making love" to a Jew.
It's all a little disjointed, which given the story's source is a recovering junkie, makes a certain dramatic sense. Subplots--some kind of intriguing--are introduced, only to remain undeveloped. (I was curious, for instance, as to just how and when that marriage of convenience to Liz Hurley's character developed into a love match.) That kind of sketchiness also makes a certain kind of druggy sense.
I guess if you want the details, you need to check out the Jerry Stahl memoir on which the film is based. That is of course one measure by which we can evaluate any film from an unfamiliar literary source (and I must confess that I had never heard of the book before--leastwise not that I recall). If the film makes the viewer want to read the book, then it's more than done its job.
PERMANENT MIDNIGHT isn't a bad film. On the other hand, it did not make me want to read the book.
Permanent Classic.......2005-09-10
This movie is an excellent addition to my collection. Ben Stiller shows how good of an actor he really is. I've never seen him portray a character such as the one in this movie. Elizabeth Hurley looks hot as always. Whether you like independent films or not, you'll like this one.

Time-hoppers from the future, led by Cheryl Ladd, are abducting airline passengers about to crash, and transporting them a millennium hence in order to reseed a future blighted by environmental disaster. This is a dangerous business, plagued by the specter of accidentally creating time paradoxes, which could throw the future out of whack. Unfortunately, they've lost a couple of the stunners they use to subdue troublesome passengers, and these fall into the hands of a curious physicist (Daniel J. Travanti) and an investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board (Kris Kristofferson). Cheryl Ladd must retrieve these devices before a time paradox wipes out her world, but manages to complicate things by developing a romance with Kristofferson. All of which is very intriguing, having come from the short story, "Air Raid," by science fiction luminary John Varley, who also is credited with the screenplay. The part about airline abductions to save the disastrous future is straight from the original story, and the rest is expanded (you wouldn't say extrapolated) from it. The results are not very happy. About a third of the film is maddeningly wasted by repeating action from a different point of view. Seems natural when there are disparate timelines to deal with, but here nothing is added by the conceit. Only Travanti turns in a creditable performance as the physicist, bent on proving his theories about the future. He seems hungry for discovery, which is one of the things you want from a science fiction story, that sense of awe. But here it's just, "Aw, shucks!" <I>--Jim Gay</I>
Customer Reviews:
credible-incredible.......2007-05-17
Refer to the role of Smith! ( I did investigate marine accidents and incidents for 10 years.) One acquires a cynic and slightly morose attitude as this type Bill Smith when confronted daily with disaster, human errors, negligence and technical blunders. I think Kristofferson plays the role quite perfect and Smith has had no vacation for six years and no sleep for 30 to 35hrs so he has to be a little deferred. And then an exhausting night encounter. So he cannot be bright eyed and bushy tailed or could you?
Cheryl Ladd is stunning as ever but seems to be more concerned to cover her bottom than to show the emotions a woman would have when thrown back into a time that is different from hers and with an experience not known to the 4th millennium.
excellent story line.......2007-02-23
I really liked this movie when I first saw it , then again I had to watch it again to understand what I thought I first missed , then realized I didnt lol .
Its a interesting theory about the plane crashes and time travel of course this could only be done in a movie , because if this happens in real life , we're all in trouble !
A must see film go out and rent it or buy it !
Sherman, send the gate.......2006-07-10
We are medially confronted with a midair plain crash. In the confusion the navigator goes back into the cabin and is horrified by something. All we see is a staring device sliding along the floor "MILLENNIUM".
Bill Smith investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board (Kris Kristofferson) is dispatched to the crash scene. he must make since of things that do not add up to a normal crash. Meanwhile he is being asked about the anomalies by a physicist (Daniel J. Travanti) that seems to know moiré than he is letting on. And to make things more complicated he is being sidetracked by a female airline employee (Cheryl Ladd) that does not seem to do everything from driving to eating awkwardly.
Bill wonders if he is tired, paranoid or is there something that is just not normal?
The music and filming remind me of a Hallmark romance movie which just happens to have a sci-fi background.
This movie is off the cheese scale!.......2005-08-02
This movie took me back! I haven't seen this movie since I was a little boy..and it took me forever to find it on the internet. I give it 5 stars just because it was everything I was hoping for and more! Sadly..you might not feel the same way so don't get your hopes up. If what you're looking for is a cheesy 80's scifi flick with all the basics: action, drama, comedy, da bomb special effects, robots and a HOPELESS love story..BUY THIS MOVIE!
Interesting........2005-06-29
I would have never seen this movie had my girlfriend not have picked it out of the cheapie bin 'cause she saw it years ago and was surprised I'd never heard of it.
The plot is about a cop (Kris Kristoperson) who is investigating a plane crash finds some weird things from the crash site. Time travellers from the future come back to rescue people, but during one of there procedures, something goes wrong and one of them is killed, and accidentally drops a futuristic device. Once they return to there future, a paradox shift in the universe rumbles through them and they realise they must send someone back to retrieve the device before someone works out how to use it and 'causes more ripples in the universe. (Creating more paradox's) One of the time travellers is Cheryl Ladd (Charlies Angels) she is sent back to retrieve the device and also try to stop Kris from investigating the plain wreck on a certain day. However when she thinks she failed she returns to the future, but if she had of stayed 10 more seconds she would have succeeded, she `causes another ripple and must return once again. And she falls in love with Kris' character.
I thought it was interesting to question what would happen if time travel were possible. Then n depending on WHAT you change in the past, how does that affect the future? I must say it's not as funny as when Homer Simpson travelled through time with his toaster and kept changing things, but on a more serious level I thought it was interesting where this movie went with it's approach.
The special effects aren't too bad, considering it is a late 80's movie. A few people criticize the future scenes as being ugly.... There supposed to be! The future in this movie is a dirty place, polluted so badly that smoking cigarettes is a breath of fresh air. (Now do you get it?). The elders where being kept alive in there tubes and that future is erased by the end of the film so that it never happened anyway which is what every futuristic movie needs to do because anybody's vision of the future will always be highly criticised for numerous reasons.
BONUS FEATURES:
Look Ma, someone decided to talk about them!
The bonus features contain a trailer, a biography of the actors, and production notes. What I found to be very unique about the bios and notes was the text on screen is actually read to you! I've never seen that on any other DVD before, and I think more DVD's should have that on them.
On the production notes when you reach the last page there is an option to view the alternate ending. I give that bonus feature 1 star for the way it's shown. It spends 5 minutes showing the end scene again until they walk through the time portal to show 2 seconds of what they call the alternate ending. If anybody skips the production notes they wont even know there is an alternate ending on the DVD. And if they read the cover that says it's on there, they'd probably wonder where it is? Either the cover shouldn't have said it and it became an EGG or they should have made it a proper option.
People who criticise this film are just showing their lack of understanding a plot that went right over their heads. The idea to show scenes again from a different angle is interesting, and seeing a women come back from the future and she reacts to things she has never done before is also interesting... sure, they could have expanded further with all that, but this film is what it is and as long as you sit down with an open mind and stop concentrating on nitpicking how un-logical things are in this film (yet you probably think the Matrix makes sense) just watch the story unfold instead of worrying about how YOU would have directed things, why not just watch it for fun instead of looking for flaws, you might actually enjoy the film!

Sight unseen, it's tempting to dismiss <I>Poison Ivy</I> as a teen variation on your standard trashy erotic thriller, a genre born with such promise in <I>Body Heat</I> that has since been in steady devolution. But while <I>Ivy</I> is no <I>Heat</I>, it's better than virtually any of those movies that star someone named Shannon. Crisp directing is supported by a script that takes a smart look at dysfunctional family dynamics, but most of all, it's the performances. Much has been made of Drew Barrymore's perfect casting as the title character, but she also does a sneaky and subtle job of straddling the fence: is Ivy a desperate, lonely young woman, an evil barracuda, or both? Tom Skerritt matches her step for step, playing the fallen husband as both hopelessly vain boob and genuinely lost soul. Cheryl Ladd delivers a sharp, minimalist performance as his Beverly Hills trophy wife dying of emphysema--becoming the still-life center of everyone else's life. And Sara Gilbert does a fine job in a role that gives her all the heavy lifting, playing tortured straight man to this pathetic and compelling tree full of coconuts. This DVD features both R-rated and unrated versions. The latter shows a bit more skin, although it's still fairly tame compared to the average skin flick. It also leaves Ivy a bit more ambiguous, and is thus a bit more fun. <I>--Geof Miller</I>
Customer Reviews:
Big disappointment.......2007-05-26
After reading many reviews I thought that I will be seeing a movie similar or even better to the Poison Ivy - The New Seduction!
MAJOR disappointment!!!!!
The story Is interesting and on the paired but the body shots that make Poison Ivy - The New Seduction a great movie are completely missing.
So if you want to see Drew Barrymore in her true beauty then this is not the movie.
Poison Ivy - The New Seduction
I keep watching it even years later.......2006-12-22
This movie could never hold a candle to any teen thriller of today. It holds a magic that could never again be recaptured. Every time I watch it I am more and more mesmorized. I'm not gay but I do have to say that Drew Barrymore was hot in this movie! The music is amazing and very sexy. It's too bad they never put out a soundtrack. The composer is David Michael Frank if it helps any. I checked out some of his other music scores and there are some that sound similar to Poison Ivy. Although it will never be the exact score from the film we can always play the movie.
Here are some recommendations of sexy movie music to check out:
Theme From Body Heat
Sadness Part 1- By Enigma (Boxing Helena, Single White Female)
Wasted Time- By My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult (Showgirls)
I'm Your Man- By Leonard Cohen (Secretary)
Money Can't Buy It- Annie Lennox (Striptease)
Carly's Song- By Enigma (Sliver)
Never, never Gonna Give You Up- and every song By Barry White(Bruce Almighty)
Orane- By Les Negresses Vertes- (Bad Influence)
Taste- By Auto & Cherokee- (The Crush)
Life In Mono- By Mono (Great Expectations)
Theme From Taxi Driver

What Ivy Wants, Ivy Gets.......2006-11-11
Drew Barrymore, Tom Skerritt, Cheryl Ladd, and Sara Gilbert star in this seductive thriller about infidelity and murder.
Drew Barrymore stars as Ivy, a new girl in town. She befriends Sylvie (Sara Gilbert). Sylvie is shy, geeky, and doesn't have many friends, so she is happy that Ivy is showing her some attention. Sylvie invites Ivy over to her house. There, she meets Sylvie's parents, Daryl Cooper (Tom Skerritt) and his wife Georgie Cooper (Cheryl Ladd). Daryl is the manager of the local television station, while Georgie is suffering from emphysema. Georgie rarely comes out of her room and often thinks of suicide by jumping from the bedroom ledge. Georgie's mood seems to improve after meeting Ivy, and soon, Ivy is spending most of her time at the Cooper's home.
However, something strange is beginning to occur. Ivy has begun to take an interest in Daryl. Ivy volunteers to work at a party hosted by Daryl, and she dresses in one of Georgie's favorite dresses. While suffering from a drinking relapse, Daryl puts the moves on Ivy, and they begin to make out. These sessions between Daryl and Ivy become more frequent.
Ivy continues living in the Cooper home until one day, Ivy spots Georgie standing on the bedroom ledge. She puts her hand on Georgie's shoulder as if to comfort her, but instead, Ivy pushes her. Georgie falls to her death. The death is ruled a suicide, because everyone was aware that Georgie had contimplated killing herself before. Ivy goes on as if nothing ever happened.
Sylvie decides to shine up her mother's red Corvette convertible, hoping it will make her feel better and ease her pain of not being able to tell her mother her true feelings before she died. Ivy shows up carrying the urn containing Georgie's ashes and suggest that the "three" of them take a drive in the Corvette. While driving, Ivy begins humming a song. Sylvie recognizes the song as the one that her mother was listening to the morning she died. She accuses Ivy of killing her mother. The two are then involved in an accident. Ivy makes it look like Sylvie was driving, and she leaves Sylvie in the driver's seat. Sylvie is put in the hospital, while Ivy resumes her affair with Daryl. Convinced she's right about Ivy, Sylvie sneaks out of the hospital and hitches a ride back to her house. There, she catches Ivy and her father in the act. What will happen next? Will Ivy suffer the same fate as Georgie, or will Ivy get her wish and they all will become a family?
This is a very good movie. The plot is well-conceived, and the twists will keep you guessing throughout the movie. Drew Barrymore, Tom Skerritt, Cheryl Ladd, and Sara Gilbet all give fine performances, but Barrymore stands out in her sexy and seductive role of Ivy.
I give this movie my highest recommendation. If you're a fan of sexy and seductive thrillers, then this is a movie you won't want to miss.
Poison Ivy: A Classic.......2006-11-10
This is the classic "Bad-Girl Befriends Wallflower And Turns Her Family's Life Upside Down" Story. Good talent here too. This is to the Gen X's what "Lolita" was to the BabyBoomers. The "oversexed teen" movie of the generation.
