Closer in spirit to a police procedural than a gory serial-killer flick, David Fincher's <I>Zodiac</I> provides a sleek, armrest-gripping re-invention of the crime film. It surveys the investigation of the Zodiac killings that terrorized the San Francisco Bay area in the late -60-early -70s; Zodiac not only killed people, but cultivated a Jack the Ripper aura by sending icky letters to the newspapers and daring readers to solve coded messages. But the film's focus isn't on the killer. We follow the reporters and detectives whose lives are taken over by the case, notably an addictive crime writer (a sartorially splendid Robert Downey Jr.), an awkward editorial cartoonist (Jake Gyllenhaal), and a hard-working cop (Mark Ruffalo). Fincher and his brilliant cinematographer Harris Savides are deft at capturing the period feel of the city, without laying on the seventies kitsch, and James Vanderbilt's script doles out its big moments to major and minor characters alike. Fincher's confidence is infectious; the movie glides through its myriad details with such dexterity that even the blind alleys and red herrings seem essential. The well-chosen cast includes unexpected people popping up all over: Anthony Edwards as a lunch-bucket homicide cop; Charles Fleischer as a mysterious suspect; Elias Koteas and Donal Logue as small-town policemen whose districts are hit by Zodiac; Chloe Sevigny as Gyllenhaal's sweet-natured wife; Brian Cox as the media-friendly lawyer Melvin Belli, so famous he once appeared on <I>Star Trek</I>; and the mighty John Carroll Lynch, as a supremely creepy suspect. The film is based on non-fiction books by Robert Graysmith (he's portrayed by Gyllenhaal), although Fincher and co. did extensive research on their own. The result is a propulsive whodunit without (thus far) an ending, but the uncertainty makes the film even more intriguing. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

4 out of 5 stars a good film.......2007-06-11

Zodiac is Fincher's most mature work to date. Whilst I enjoyed Se7en and Fight Club, they were a little showy--daring, but striving to be different. Zodiac is a more classical type of work; it's simply told, and Fincher let's the case draw the reader in rather than relying on effects. He draws two excellent performances from Robert Downey Jr and Jake Gyllenhaal. I can see why some critics think Downey is the best actor of his generation; his performance here is so real it's unnerving. Presumably drawing on his own addictions, Downey makes his character raw, and watching the performance is a moving experience. Gyllenhaal takes on the kind of role that Michael J. Fox did in Casualties of War--a kind of observer role (at least for a lot of the film). It's easy to overlook this kind of performance--it's super subtle and finely tuned. Fincher has never made a film this good, and I look forward to seeing what he does next.

5 out of 5 stars Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (Spoilers).......2007-06-10

Most unsuspecting movie-goers would have been falsely led into believing that this would be a slash-fest. Even more so, coming from the director of "Se7en". What most of them probably forgot that he was also responsible for 1999's most cerebral film: Fight Club.

As the tagline goes: There's more than one way to lose your life to a killer. It perhaps sums up the whole thesis or gist of the film. Even though this film is about the elusive Zodiac killings that plagued San Fransisco in the late 60s, well into the 70s; it is actually a by-the-book standard procedural investigative drama. It is not so much of a murder mystery that every Agatha Christie's fans will be anticipating. Even though the real identity of Zodiac remains the "Macguffin" of the whole movie.

This film is broken down into 3 main acts. The first act consist of flamboyant journalist, Paul Avery, played with equal flamboyance by ex-alcoholic Robert Downey Jr., whose initial disinterest and outward passiveness hides a dark and unhealthy obsession over the killings and the killer himself. Interestingly, the film managed to hide his obsession, well into the third act.

The second act plays out like a fly-on-the-wall docudrama CSI-style drama series. The focus here is on Mark Ruffalo's homicide detective whose persistence and perseverance is well commended but again, leads to a cul-de-sac.

The final act unravels itself with an understated role played by Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays the author of the book of which of the film was based on. Gyllenhaal imbues a subdued performance in the first act, only to shine out with an equal, if not surpassing Paul Avery's obsession, morbid obsession over the killer's identity. Even though not explicitly shown, his whole social and family life falls apart as his obsession deepens.

Throughout all these acts, the catalyst that glues all three characters is the Zodiac killer or suspect himself. The killings portrayed which are punctuated throughout all three acts, were no doubt stylish and even shocking. But the real deal comes from John Carroll Lynch, who plays the only prime suspect in the whole affair. Quite a remarkable intense, albeit brief performance.

David Fincher weaves a fine tale of obsession that probably put Brian DePalma's "Black Dahlia" in disgrace. All three protagonists' lives are intertwined with each other, all hurtling towards disappointment, delusions and ultimately, in Graysmith's case, a catharsis that is so anti-climatic that will leave the audience questioning themselves, whether all that effort was really worth it.

1 out of 5 stars Paramount Confirms NO EXTRAS!!!!!!!! = No Sale .......2007-06-09

Paramount has confirmed there are NO extras to be released on this DVD release. No word if we will ever see a Special Edition since the box office results were poor. But I WILL NOT buy a bare bones David Fincher DVD. No EXTRAS = NO SALE the Films would have 5 Stars This release 0 Stars

5 out of 5 stars Unnecessary Cover Art.......2007-06-05

Loved the movie, will buy the DVD, even though this single-disc release of a three-hour feature means there will be a later "Collector's Edition" release on the horizon. But what's with the terrible cover art? The original poster of just the bridge, the fog and the film's title was a thing of beauty. Granted, the marketing types feel it's absolutely necessary to have the actors' faces plastered on the DVD covers. But that image of Jake Gyllenhaal looks more like an artist's rendering of a fugitive suspect than an actual photograph of the actor (not to mention the fact that he looks more than a little cross-eyed and Neanderthal-ish).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2007-06-03

This is an excellent movie. Just fascinating. Even the music soundtrack is good - Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man is really kinda spooky. But this movie is more like Helter Skelter - not scary per se, as it focuses on the investigation - it's not a horror movie.

I highly recommend this movie.

The Bret Easton Ellis novel <I>American Psycho</I>, a dark, violent satire of the "me" culture of Ronald Reagan's 1980s, is certainly one of the most controversial books of the '90s, and that notoriety fueled its bestseller status. This smart, savvy adaptation by Mary Harron (<I>I Shot Andy Warhol</I>) may be able to ride the crest of the notoriety; prior to the film's release, Harron fought a ratings battle (ironically, for depictions of sex rather than violence), but at the time the director stated, "We're rescuing [the book] from its own bad reputation." Harron and co-screenwriter Guinevere Turner (<I>Go Fish</I>) overcome many of the objections of Ellis's novel by keeping the most extreme violence offscreen (sometimes just barely), suggesting the reign of terror of yuppie killer Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) with splashes of blood and personal souvenirs. Bale is razor sharp as the blank corporate drone, a preening tiger in designer suits whose speaking voice is part salesman, part self-help guru, and completely artificial. Carrying himself with the poised confidence of a male model, he spends his days in a numbing world of status-symbol one-upmanship and soul-sapping small talk, but breaks out at night with smirking explosions of homicide, accomplished with the fastidious care of a hopeless obsessive. The film's approach to this mayhem is simultaneously shocking and discreet; even Bateman's outrageous naked charge with a chainsaw is most notable for the impossibly polished and gleaming instrument of death. Harron's film is a hilarious, cheerfully insidious hall of mirrors all pointed inward, slowly cracking as the portrait becomes increasingly grotesque and insane. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-18

This is my favorite movie of all time. Christian Bale drew me in when I first saw this movie. Every movie he is in, he always seems to be on top of his game. Sure some of his movie havent been all too great, yet he still puts on a hell of a show. I love the book as well, which is more explict then this. Its a great move.

    5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-06-15

I've got more and more respect for Christian Bale the more I see his movies. This one is excellent.

2 out of 5 stars do you like phil collins?.......2007-06-13

I love this movie, I have since I rented about 5 years ago. I dont' really understand it, I guess I should read the book, but I think It's a really well done movie. Of course Bale is great, i love him as bateman and I also loved the period of the film. The special features on this edition are a different story. The version I already had only included one short featurette that was interesting, but short, and left me wanting more. So, naturally I thought I struck gold with the "uncut killers edition". Too bad most of the special features have NOTHING to do with the movie. A group of about 20 totally random people comment, one at a time, on new york in the eigthies for about an hour. I know that sounds weird, and it is, but its true. TOTALLY RANDOM people that had nothing to do with the movie (most of them). Honestly, I havent watched the movie yet, the special features were all I could handle at the time. There are 5 deleted scenes that add up to about 2 minutes, so this was barely worth it, only because I love this movie so much.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!.......2007-06-10

This is Christian Bale at his best, his performance oozes class. Classic performance in a classic movie. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough. Buy it. Now I must return some videos...

HBO caused a stir when it aired <I>If These Walls Could Talk</I>, a portrait of three women from three generations (all who occupied the same house at various times) who had unwanted pregnancies. HBO utilizes the same gimmick in the sequel, this time telling the story of women who love women.

The three stories of <I>If These Walls Could Talk 2</I> are uneven. Far and away the most powerful and moving story is the first, taking place in 1961, starring Vanessa Redgrave as a woman "widowed" when her partner of 50 years suddenly dies. Redgrave is phenomenal, and her piece alone makes this sequel worth watching. The 1972 portion stars Michelle Williams, who finds dealing with the sexual politics of the gay community increasingly more complex when she falls in love with a boyish woman (played by Chloë Sevigny). The most modern piece, taking place in 2000, portrays a contemporary lesbian couple (Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres) determined to have a baby. The light nature of the story detracts from the more serious issues of the earlier segments. Despite the mixed fare, HBO once again proves itself on the cutting edge of moviemaking, with this rather daring film that will both provoke and entertain. <I>--Jenny Brown</I>

5 out of 5 stars HBO Rocks Part 2.......2007-01-14

This was an HBO original movie broadcast in 2000. This movie follows three lesbian stories in three different time periods. Vanessa Redgrave stars as a lesbian widow in 1961. Chloe Sevigny and Michelle Williams star as feminists in 1971. Sharon Stone and Ellen DeGeneres star as a modern day lesbian couple trying to have a baby. I found the story of Vanessa Redgrave to be the most touching. It speaks to the need for legal rights for same sex couples and a need for understanding.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-11-23

A beautiful, touching movie. Well directed and acted. The first story with Vanessa Redgrave is very touching. All three stories have a completely different view of lesbians and are very good. The third story with Ellen & Sharon is very humorous. With stars like Vanessa, Ellen & Sharon, how can this be anything but a very worthwhile film and well acted.

5 out of 5 stars IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK 2.......2006-11-06

I LOVE THIS MOVIE A BIT MORE THAN #1 MOVIE "IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK", MAYBE CAUSE MORE UP TO DATE, AND MORE I COULD RELATE TO BEING IN MY LATE 40'S. BUT I COULD DEFINATELY RELATE WITH EACH OF THE PERIODS IN THIS MOVIE. THEY ALL SEEMED SO REAL TO ME. I COULD WATCH THIS MOVIE OVER AND OVER, WHICH I DO. ALL THE TIME.

4 out of 5 stars Two out of three ain't bad........2006-09-07

If These Walls Could Talk 2 explores female same sex relationships in different eras, but in the same house.

The first story deals with an old woman who loses her longtime lover due to a fall from a ladder and the eventual death. The dead woman's son and daughter-in-law and granddaughter show up and basically take what is lawfully theirs, the house and its possessions. The old woman is left with nothing and is forced to start over somewhere else despite being in her 60s. I kept thinking to myself, all of this could have been avoided had the dead woman made a will. This story basically deals with how same sex couples don't have the same legal rights. Vanessa Redgrave, who plays the left-behind lover, can't even visit her companion in the hospital room because she's not a relative or spouse. This was definitely the heartwrenching one of the three vignettes.

The second story takes place during the women's feminist movement. Some college lesbian girls go to a gay bar where one of them, Michelle Williams, meets Chloe Sevigny and a romance develops. The only thing, Sevigny's character is butch. And Williams' friends have a problem with a woman acting like a man in order to live the lesbian lifestyle. They see it as defeating the purpose of being a lesbian in the first place. Pretty good performances all around. Nia Long and Natasha Leonne are in the story: both who have played lesbians in other movies.

The third segment deals with a lesbian couple trying to have a baby. It stars Ellen Degeneres and Sharon Stone. This one is boring. All you see is frantic anticipation and turkey basters. There is a surprising steamy sex scene. It's surprising because I never thought a sex scene with Ellen Degeneres could be steamy. I applaud Anne Heche as a director for being able to pull that off. But, it's still a less compelling story than the other two.

All in all, If These Walls...2 is a good movie. It's certainly more tolerable than its predecessor.

Larry Clark's controversial film about New York City adolescents walking the AIDS tightrope is also an unblinking look at the dehumanizing rituals of growing up. But it really doesn't add up to more than the sum of its various shocks--virgin busting, skinny-dipping, male callousness--overlayed with middle-class disapproval. Clark is hectoring us for cutting kids loose at a terrible time in modern American history, but so are a lot of other people, who also offer alternatives and ideas. The film does nothing to push us toward new thoughts, new solutions, new dreams. It is more like a window onto our worst fantasies about what our children are doing out there on the streets. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

    Description

Powerful and passionate, colorful and compelling, Larry Clark's KIDS is 24 frenetic hours in the life of a group of contemporary teenagers who, like all teenagers, believe they are invincible. With breathtaking images from one of the world's most renowned photographers, KIDS is a deeply affecting, no-holds-barred landscape of words and images, depicting with raw honesty the experiences, attitudes and uncertainties of innocence lost. KIDS gets under the skin and lingers, long after it is viewed. The kids at the core of the story are just that: teenagers living the urban melee of modern-day America. But while these kids dwell in the big city, their story could, quite possibly, happen anywhere.<P>

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars sensationalistic nihilism.......2007-05-29

WOw, I would say that these kids are a carefully selected bunch of losers. They have nothing going for them but their reckless youth, meaningless promiscuity, and semi-affluence, combined with indifferent parents and a complete lack of interesting minds, not to forget low self esteem. Those are all the buzzwords designed to shock: all of the buttons are pushed, even rape and violence. Oh, then there is HIV/Aids. The execution of this film is also clunky, while some of the acting is good, though I suspect the actors may be exctly what they are portraying.

While there are certainly subcultures likes this - pseudo-sophisticated, selfish, and arrogantly fearless - I must admit that I doubt my kids hang out with kids like these or ever would. Of course, there but for the grace of God go we all, but we listen to our kids, they enjoy achieving, and they are developing interests that possibly are pointing in career directions; they rebel, they experiment, and we talk with them.

So I don't think the sick kids here reflect much about the youth of today, except for a very small group. Most kids understand basic limits, and it is our job as parents to make sure they do.

Not recommended, except for those parents who need this kind of shock, utterly lacking in nuance and subtlty as it is.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic niew of adolescence.......2007-05-21

Ever wonder what your kids are doing when they say they're staying at a friend's place over the weekend? Ever think to yourself "Im sure i had another $10 in there"....This movie is not only entertaining, but educational to both parents and adolescents. My only quam is that in some cases it glorifies the life these kids are living. No doubt in their own mind they are living in glory, however, the stark reality is quite the opposite, and i think this message gets blurred at times.

4 out of 5 stars where are you.......2007-05-16

this what happens when kids have no parents to raise them . all parents should see this if they have the guts

3 out of 5 stars Eh. I got fooled by the hype........2007-05-12

    Kids (Larry Clark, 1995)

Once all the furor has died down, Kids will be remembered as the movie that started the careers of Chloe Sevigny and Rosario Dawson. Of course, it's been twelve years, and the furor hasn't yet died down. I'm a little confused as to why.

The story, though it takes Clark a while to get around to it: Telly (Leo Fitzpatrick) and Casper (Justin Pierce) are skate kids in New York. Jennie (Sevigny) is a girl Telly had had sex with in the past. She accompanies her friend Ruby (Dawson) to the clinic so Ruby can get an HIV test; Ruby turns out negative, but Jennie is positive. The rest of the movie is Jennie trying to track down Telly before he can sleep with anyone else and tell him.

First off: watch the movie with subtitles on. It won't offer a complete translation, but it'll probably help. Telly and Casper's dialogue is often unintelligible. It may lend credibility to the characters, but sometimes you have to sacrifice a bit of credibility so as not to lose your audience. (Interestingly, almost every male in the movie talks in the same odd patois; I can't remember a single female in the movie doing so.) Second, the pace here is all over the map; it seemed as if Clark were working entirely without an idea of pace until the main story starts up (which happens far enough into the film that it seems as if it's going to be a plotless slice-of-life flick for a while), and once the main story does appear, the movie wanders off into tangents that sabotage the pace even more. Parts of the film that should have been minor scenes to advance the plot are dragged out, while valuable character-building scenes are jump-cut.

I got the feeling I was supposed to be shocked by the ages of the participants, as well. First off, that's a gimmick at best, and a transparent one; second, are there really people who don't know what teenagers are like these days? (And "these days" is a misnomer-- it's been a long, long time since I was a teen, and we were like this then, too.)

It's not bad, and does contain some good performances, but it's certainly not the groundbreaking masterpiece I'd been expecting given the twelve years of raves I'd heard about it. ** ½

    5 out of 5 stars Real.......2007-04-11

To all of the moms who are upset because they got tricked into buying this for their teens: This movie is not a parent. This movie is not for Kids (I know the title is deceiving). The movie is an accurate depiction of one side of life as it was experienced by inner-city youths in the early 90s. But maybe your kids need to watch it because the wildest kids i know are the ones who are sheltered from reality. Moms and dads do your jobs and let filmmakers make movies that actually mean something. HIV is real and that is the theme of this drama. But I guess that is what a parent is supposed to teach...

After its scandalous screening at the 2004 Cannes film festival, Vincent Gallo's <I>The Brown Bunny</I> was cut from 118 to 92 minutes, and that made all the difference. The film that critic and long-time Cannes attendee Roger Ebert originally called "the worst film in the history of the festival" was transformed, by Gallo's judicious editing, into a perfectly acceptable if not universally respected art-house curio, widely criticized yet ripe for cult status, able to stand beside Gallo's <I>Buffalo 66</I> as the work of a genuine artist with a singular vision. Yes, that vision is self-indulgent, narcissistic, and likely to turn off a majority of viewers with its glacial pace and endless shots of Gallo driving, driving, and driving some more. But in portraying a melancholy motorcycle racer who drives cross-country while mourning a private loss that remains secret until the final scenes, Gallo gives us a character, and a film, that feels spiritually akin to such early '70s classics as <I>Five Easy Pieces</I> and <I>Two-Lane Blacktop</I>. It's a flawed yet ultimately moving example of maverick, unconventional cinema, and while Chloe Sevigny's explicit oral sex scene with Gallo is completely unnecessary, it's just one more element that places <I>The Brown Bunny</I> firmly, and refreshingly, out of the mainstream. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Keep the FF button close.......2007-06-10

The premise of the movie is decent, and the ending is almost good, however it's a torturous ride to the end. 90% of this movie is the main character driving... Just driving, no dialog, no music, just road noise. I recommend hitting the FF button whenever the car is moving.

    2 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled: It's not even VG's virile member........2007-03-20

Notice the edit when the camera moves down to his nether regions. Such chutzpah: Using an amply endowed body double to stand him for him. I'll bet his conquests are disappointed.

Otherwise, pretty amatuerish, low-budget affair, e.g., a long single take of him driving with the camera mount crooked and his face forced out of frame. Good 10-minute shot of the back of his head and the backseat, though. Maybe an amateur can be a director, but not a DP.

Still, VG's bizarre personality offers some dark ironical humor (I think it's ironical). Anyway, better than Ron Howard or Spielberg.

3 out of 5 stars Edgy and racey and provacative.......2007-03-17

This film was interesting... It is not your typical Hollywood flick. It is worth watching at least once to form your own opinion. Mr. Gallo definitely has an edgy style and artistic ability. And for that infamous scene with Ms. Sevigny... every man's fantasy. I added this to my collection.

    2 out of 5 stars I will admit it.......2007-03-12

I got this movie orginally to see Vincent Gallo's schlong and that I did. That is why I did give this movie 2 stars. The story of this movie is very boring and it is a very dull movie all in all. The dialong is awful and it's actors are boring as well. I am sorry, but I will have to say don't even bother with this movie unless you want to see Vincent Gallo or Chloë Sevigny nude. Other than that, don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe even 6 out of 5 stars. So there........2007-03-09

Yes, well, of course most people don't like this movie. If people don't realize by now that Brown Bunny is aimed at a limited audience--especially after all the hullabaloos (hullabali?) raised by this film--I don't know what to say about the movie-viewing public. The following are the facts of the matter; let them serve as either a warning or invitation to prospective viewers.

    (1) The film is (materially) uneventful. By this, I mean that nothing much "happens" as far as dialogue, events, or otherwise obvious Hollywood razzmatazz. There are no car chases, explosions, fist fights, cute romantic foibles, jokes, sight gags, or secret government plots. What there is, is a lot of driving--of a van, across the U.S. There are minor, nearly wordless encounters scattered around, but the film is predominantly a mood piece, meditative, allusive, cathartic, evocative... If this doesn't sound appealing to you, then by all means save yourself the hassle and avoid this film like the plague. But to all those who think this is nth degree in a director's self-indulgence, this movie doesn't even come close. See a movie like Goodbye Dragon Inn or, for that matter, any of the major Taiwanese directors, and then you'll see a slow movie! (But not necessarily a bad one, however.)

    (2) The movie is brutally depressing. If you make it all the way through (and many will not), you'll unlikely be whistling a merry ditty or feeling particularly chipper. It is certainly not a feel-good movie; in fact, it might qualify as a feel-very-bad movie, which I prefer anyway. A lot of people complain about depressing movies--they would rather watch something light and diverting. But here's the discrepancy: this isn't the cinematic version of Muzak, here to pacify the populace; it is art--which may (fear or fears!) be distressing at times. Life's like that. Get used to it. We have more than enough "entertainment" around to neutralize us into thoughtless zombies... pop music, magazines, TV, sports, and (ahem) the internet, just to name a few.

    (3) Okay, here's another doozy, and this is the reason the movie has gotten any public notoriety whatsoever. There is an actual sex scene containing actual oral sex (apparently anyway) between Vincent Gallo and Chloe Sevigny. But, if you are visiting this page, you probably already know this. After all, why would 95% of people be visiting this page? If you are thinking of watching this film for the erotic factor, skip it. There are countless adult films better formulated to satisfy your needs. This scene is hardly what I would consider titillating. It's more sad, in a way. And, no, Chloe Sevigny hasn't destroyed her career by doing this, nor has she made an especially bad choice. (Notice that not many people accuse Vincent Gallo of destroying his career by doing the same thing. But of course many people strongly dislike Vincent Gallo anyway. I myself don't like his right-wing politics, but I still love this film.)

Okay, those are the three main obstacles preventing most casual viewers from "enjoying" (is that even the right word?) this film. If one or more of them seems unappealing to you, then save yourself the ninety minutes. It's as simple as that.

It was very appealing to me, however, and I imagine that some other people out in the world will find this film as important, moving, and meaningful as I have.

When Brandon Teena, a young man with an infectious, aw-shucks grin and an angelic face that's all angles, wanders into Falls City, Nebraska, he takes to the town like it's a second skin. In little time he's fallen in with a gang of goofy if temperamental redneck boys, found himself a girlfriend, and befriended enough people to form something of a small family. In fact, it's the best time Brandon's ever had. However, there are shadows looming over Brandon's life: a court date for grand theft auto, a checkered criminal record, and a seemingly innocuous speeding ticket that could prove to be his undoing. Why? Because as it turns out, Brandon Teena is actually Teena Brandon, a woman masquerading as a man.

This fascinating story was based on real-life events (as documented in <I>The Brandon Teena Story</I>) that occurred in 1993 and ended in tragedy: Brandon's rape and murder by two of his supposed friends. Despite this horrible outcome, however, in the hands of director Kimberly Peirce (who cowrote the unfettered screenplay with Andy Bienen), Brandon's story becomes not oppressive or preachy, but rather oddly and touchingly transcendent, anchored by Hilary Swank's phenomenal, unsentimental performance. Swank inhabits Brandon's contradictions and passions with a natural vitality most actresses would refuse to give themselves over to. Brandon's deception is doomed from the start, but Swank's enthusiasm is infectious, and when Brandon starts romancing the sloe-eyed Lana (a pitch-perfect Chloë Sevigny), he finds a soul mate who wants to transcend boundaries and fated identities as much as he does. The last part of the film, when Brandon's true identity is discovered, is truly painful to watch, but in between the agony there are touching moments of sweetness between Brandon and Lana, who wrestles with the truth of who Brandon actually is. You'll come away from <I>Boys Don't Cry</I> with affection and respect for Brandon, not pity. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

4 out of 5 stars Like Van Sant's early films, but maybe better........2007-06-20

I don't really know how "accurate" the film is in portraying the main character. Apparently there was some sort of controversy over this. I think it doesn't matter that much: it's a feature film, not a biography. Of course it stylizes its characters. Complaining about this just distracts from the substance of the film.

So, I don't know what Teena Brandon was really like. But, in the director's interpretation, she is a deeply confused and helpless person, the scatterbrained type who doesn't quite understand the world around her. She doesn't really know what to do with her life, she has no plan and nothing to look forward to. However, she is very imaginative, and invents a detailed biography for herself. She also calls herself Brandon Teena and attempts to pass herself off as a man, but she also fabricates other parts of her life that don't deal with her gender. For instance, she tells the other characters that she has a child, with no prompting on their part. She doesn't tell lies "on purpose," it's more like she needs to believe them herself. Her "sexual identity crisis" (her words, and she says them like she doesn't quite know what they mean) is part of a much larger, more general "identity crisis."

She commits theft, but she is essentially harmless to society. If she could find some kind of direction in life, she might find it easy to live normally, unlike the characters John and Tom, who really are genuine criminals, incapable of living any other way and unwilling to try. But more than anything, Brandon wants to be loved and accepted, instinctively. It doesn't really matter by whom. Consequently, she enters dangerous territory without understanding the risk to herself.

Long after the audience has realized that Brandon should leave town as soon as possible, she stays. Even after the first assault, it still seems like she doesn't understand her situation. Some critics complained about this aspect of Brandon's character, but I think it gives an air of genuine tragedy to the film. It's almost as if her fate is forcing her to stay.

The film reminded me a lot of Gus Van Sant's "My Own Private Idaho," which is also about a lonely drifter who is stuck in a desolate region and craves love more than anything else. "Boys Don't Cry" is much better, because it lacks Van Sant's Shakespearean pretensions. But like Van Sant's film, "Boys Don't Cry" is best at appearances. The script is barely there. Half the film just wanders through dingy trailers, houses, bars and convenience stores, with convincingly forgettable dialogue. Most scenes are shot at night, usually indoors, so nature is totally absent. There's very little exposition. We don't really learn anything about the characters, but this is perfectly accurate. There is nothing to learn about them, and there's really nothing interesting that they could talk about.

But we can look at their faces, which are all chosen very well for the roles. Chloe Sevigny, as Lana, is immediately recognizable. Every suburb or small town has a girl like this, with a sullen face and a deliberately abrasive attitude intended to conceal her naivete. Every other face in the film is just as archetypical.

There is a moment of foreshadowing early in the film when John first encourages Brandon to drive over the speed limit, and then threatens her after they get pulled over by police. The impulsive, unreasoning way he goes from friendly to hostile is all the more frightening because it's so unexpected. When he finds out about Brandon's gender, he screams his disgust, but his anger is motivated more by "traditional" sexual jealousy. He would have assaulted a male rival also. But another man, especially one similar to John, might have been able to defend himself, whereas Brandon's gender and personality combine to make her uniquely vulnerable and defenseless, and this is the saddest thing about the story.

I do have a few problems with the film. It's very noticeable that all of the men in the film are vile and callous, not just John and Tom, but also the cops and the guys in the bar. At the same time, all of the women are basically sympathetic, not just Lana, but also her friend and even Lana's mother. Even if the women feel disgusted at Brandon's cross-dressing at first, they quickly come to support her. But the men never feel any remorse or sympathy, just rage and fear, and they blindly victimize everyone. I guess I can accept this in these particular characters, but still, I wonder about the director's intent.

The inevitable, brutal ending drags on for about half an hour, long after the conclusion becomes obvious. And the very last scene has a screaming toddler for maximum gut-wrenching effect. These lurid scenes may be manipulative (a similar scene in "Brokeback Mountain" is effective but occurs much more quickly), but there is also something believable in them. These men don't know anything that might inspire them to listen to reason or to feel compassion. It is hopeless to beg them for mercy.

I also don't quite believe the tender love scene between Lana and Brandon right after the first assault. The director includes it for pathos, to make the audience hope for their salvation, and to underscore how happy they might have been. But I'd suppose that right after such a terrifying experience, one would be too severely traumatized to express one's passion.

But, for most of its duration, the film is perceptive and believable, with a sympathetic and tragic heroine undone by circumstances that are too much for her to handle. The film is well in keeping with the tradition of American stories about marginal youth. If you like that subject, or if you are willing to consider watching a film about it, "Boys Don't Cry" is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Well Directed, Incredible Performances.......2007-06-14

There's not much to say about this film that hasn't been said in the other reviews, but I do have a few extra comments.

Swank's performance really is incredibly brave and convincing. I was surprised not necessarily by how good her performance was, but how brave she was in really throwing herself whole-hog into the role and truly becoming a man. Her performance adds another vast dimension to the movie, particularly as I feel that in her performance alone does the character's motivation come through. You can sense just how exciting it is for her to flirt with becoming free of her gender, even if what she's doing is getting in a bar fight or doing stupid stunts on the back of a pickup. You can sense her euphoria at getting a taste of the experience of being a man. This creates the motivation for her character, as the man she wants to be IS the kind of guy who would get hurt and get into the kind of trouble she does. This is one case where the performance really IS one third of what the film as a whole is and I have no problem with Hilary Swank walking off with the best actress Oscar.

I am surprised that so many people at the time said the film was poorly directed. I think that Pierce has definitely watched her share of David Lynch films and uses what she's learned to cast an air of unreality and mythological significance to the events. I thought the sex scene was particularly good, because you see on Lana's face how Brandon is pleasing her in ways that her other boyfriends couldn't possibly. This is much more subtly done than in other lesbian films, where a character would probably have a line like "well everyone knows that only a woman knows what a woman wants" or something else-- this film is more powerful because it doesn't preach or be too heavy-handed. It is not without viewpoint, but it handles the matter subtly.

It's a little frustrating watching the movie just how stupid Brandon is, but hey, it's a true story and the film makes him out to be stupid and unstable from the start.

I'm gay, and as such I found this film's tagline upon release, "A true story about finding the courage to be yourself," entirely disgusting. This is not about finding the courage to be yourself, it's about messed-up people who are at the mercy of forces within themselves that are beyond their control. It's about people who are so undersocialized that they have no way of knowing how to deal with the emotions that they feel. I am so sick of the whole marketing slant of "Being-gay-is-just-such-a-heartwarming-growing-experience" that I truly want to vomit. I would like to think that someone out there could credit gay people with enough intelligence to accept that not everything about being gay or lesbian is a wonderful, warm, and affirming experience. I also think a tagline like that trivializes the emotions and experiences of the characters in a film like this. Luckily the film itself is free of such sentimentality.

i LOVE this movie.....its poignant, interesting, and just an overall treat...i recomment it to everyone, open your minds

    5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable story.......2007-04-02

This is the true story of Teena Brandon (Hillary Swank), a lonely teenage girl living as a man, "Brandon Teena." She's been in trouble with the law and has no roots. When she comes to a new town, she is befriended by a "family" of perpetually drunk low-lifes, and is especially attracted to Lana (Chloe Sevigny), who dreams of going to Memphis and being a karaoke singer. Brandon and Chloe fall in love, angering two men who begin to suspect Brandon's true identity.

Swank's performance as Brandon/Teena is simply remarkable. She conveys the heartbreak and misery of an outsider, a misfit, and the need for love that is universal; she won the Oscar in 1999 for this role. Sevigny is convincing as the girl who falls in love with both Brandon and Teena. Despite its low-budget (Swank earned only $3,000), this is an extremely well-made, thought-provoking, and deeply moving for adults. (There are sexual and extremely violent scenes.) A riveting, shocking, and very sad story with sensitive acting and direction.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, very heartfelt.......2007-03-22

I saw this movie on Lifetime and I just had to purchase it. It is a heartfelt movie and Hilary Swank does an excellent job in the lead role. I'm sure mny people can relate to this movie. You will not be disappointed with this purchase.

<I>Party Monster</I> is a curiosity: a fictional version of events already covered in documentary form (see <I>Party Monster: The Shockumentary</I>) by this film's co-directors, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, best known for <I>The Eyes of Tammy Faye</I>. <I>Party Monster</I>, theatrically released in 2003, also signals the return of Macaulay Culkin to films after a long absence. Culkin plays 1980s club kid-turned-killer Michael Alig, a small-town boy who arrives in New York in search of reinvention on the Ecstasy-fueled party scene. Alig ascends from rube to ringmaster, organizing Fabulous happenings and anointing, in Warhol-like fashion, various transvestites and studly naifs the era's new superstars. Seth Green plays Alig's arch but more reticent co-conspirator and roommate, James St. James. Green is more grounded in character than Culkin, though neither actor is convincing as a deluded drag queen. Despite interesting material, the directors never reveal what makes Alig a compelling figure in Manhattan's social history. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

    5 out of 5 stars Bitter Sweet.......2007-05-15

Okay, I'm going to sound contradicting here, but hear me out... This has to be, by far, the WORST acting I have ever seen in my whole thirty-six years of being, HOWEVER, it contains comedic genius from Marilyn Manson, charm, wit and strange intrigue of Macaulay Culkin, as well as a fantastic soundtrack that is worth putting-up with the bad acting, all in itself. I happen to be a big fan of the "Club Kids", including Michael Alig, James St. James and DJ Keoki, so it helps to know this is based on their whirlwind lives (although I honestly wasn't aware of that until I watched the additional features) (doh!)... Most definitely a cult classic!

3 out of 5 stars Rent it first........2007-04-16

It's worth seeing this movie if you like Seth Green. He's just adorable in it. It's an interesting movie that might be stuck in your head for a while after watching. Mostly you might be saying "Why did I watch that?". If you like watching different movies then go for this one. I wouldn't recommend buying it though.

    1 out of 5 stars Grossly unpleasant.......2007-03-02

To see Macaulay Culkin in a tight little shirt and short tight shorts is just revolting. This was just not for me. I've like Seth Green in every other role I've seen him in, but this was too much. Seemed like a well done movie overall, but I couldn't watch more than about 1/3 of it.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, disturbed and honest.......2006-12-19

These were the type of emotions that I had felt watching this movie. I have never was privilaged to view so much drug use in my life, but I was not a club kid. I was facinated to see the life of a club kid protrayed in such an honest way if this is the life it is. I felt very sorry for the people that were involved with each other and thier tattered, addicted lives. I am giving this movie 4 stars for the honesty and the acting of the actors in a way that it was believable.

    4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised.......2006-11-14

If you expect to watch a plot driven movie, this is not for you. This film uses a murder to draw you into the time of the Club Kids, a time when it only mattered if you were seen.

I sat down to watch this out of boredom. I am not a fan of Macaulay Culkin and did not think I would last the entire film. Instead, after writing this review, I will be watching Party Monster again.

This film is almost as much about the time as it is about the people. Michael Alig and James St. James happened to be the people who took us to the late 80s, early 90's pre-Giuliani New York night club scene in this film. My exposure to the Club Kids prior to viewing this film was limited. I had managed to see them on Joan Rivers and thought what they were doing was a cool idea, just living to be seen, in a sense. The young men and women were existing for the next party, the next person to give them attention and the next high (both natural and chemically induced).

This movie transports you to a time and place that most of us will never experience, and it manages to do it quite well. The beginning and end did not fit in with the rest of the film and the attempt to bookend the film did not quite work out well, although the end did tie in reminder that Alig only cares for attention in case we had forgotten what his driving force is. I still found these scenes to be tacked on. They did help me travel from now back to the time period of the film and back again but it still seemed a bit disjointed.

Make no mistake, this film is low budget. This was especially obvious in a couple of scenes that take place outside the club on the street. I could almost see the tape for the roped off area, the lack of natural foot traffic was obvious. The two main actors (Seth Green and Culkin) both had several scenes where it was clear they had not had time to work on practicing their lines, and that rehearsals were needed (the beginning of the first scene in the fast food joint comes to mind).

I was surprised at the performances by Chloë Sevigny (yes, gay men can have friends that are girls), Dylan McDermott (who played an excellent role in Wonderland -- another low budget gem, around the same time) and Marilyn Manson as Christina.

This is a good movie to view if you want to leave the world you are in for a couple hours, but a better budget would have really helped this film.

2 out of 5 stars It claws your senses, twists your logic, and murders your soul; and yet I can't look away. .......2007-05-23

Another reviewer said Gummo was "unlike anything else of TV." My Holy Goodness, how right they were. If a lunatic was voted mayor of a town, Gummo would be the film depicting the townsfolk who call such a place "home-sweet-home."

We are introduced to the following: two awkward, gangly teens who kill cats and sell the rotting corpses to a local grocery store for a dollar per pound; three sisters who are about as backwards as anything this side of Appalachian poverty; a seedy brother who pimps his retarded sister out to teenaged boys; a sinister-looking young lady who, obviously being on the slow side, enjoys walking around the town singing "Jesus loves me this I know" as well as the always depraved "A-B-C-D-EFG-" song. Along the way, we also meet a young man wearing nothing but some swim trunks and a pink bunny hat who has the habit of urinating on cars driving beneath a local underpass. Oh, and for fits and giggles, we meet a group of rowdy mullet-styled rednecks who get their kicks from wrestling kitchen chairs to the point of exhaustion.

Sound like fun? This is a messed-up movie about twisted people living in the aftermath of a tornado that has swepth through their little slice of heaven. Nothing runs together smoothly as scenes and storylines come and go without rhyme or reason. Even the David Lynch and Terrence Malick crowds out there will feel disoriented in about 90% of this film.

A word of caution: if you begin to watch Gummo, you will have trouble turning away. I would liken it to a drug addiction that you know will harm you in some if you keep using it, but you end up alleviating such a warning by telling yourself, "Hey, just a little more. Just a little bit mo...."

Here are some alternative suggestions to watching this movie:
    1) spend the hour and a half in a forest preserve out house...
    2) try making your own crystal meth and then doing it
    3) eat some spoiled chicken, get sick, puke and then role around in it.
    4) piss in your pants and don't change your clothes
Doing one or all of the above is a far better experience than sitting through this piece of vile trash.

I hated this trash. I'm so glad I saw it on IFC and didn't pay for rental. I can't ask for my money back. I do want that hour and a half back though. That so called writer/director(?) should go away.

3 out of 5 stars SMALL TOWN AMERICA FREAK SHOW........2007-05-19

    3 out of 5 stars Objective review--GUMMO.......2007-05-14

So I tend to look at things in terms of nuetrality. This movie is freakin wierd, but incredibly artistic, take from it what you will. Its touching in its entirity as it lends insight into the shattered lives of victims of a devistating tornado in the unrecovering town of Xenia, OH. This is skewed by sensless acts of animal cruelty and odd behavior by residents which is obviously apparent in their off color choice of spare time activities. The movie ends abruptly leaving questions unanswered but more importantly a sense of sympathy for those in similar circumstances. It offers a startling depiction of a life very different than most, and a state of living not easily fathomed by most. This is very much a make-you-think kind of movie, especially in relation to the nature of human condition itself. Its a movie worth seeing for perspective if nothing else. It will be what you make of it....
