After the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Elijah Wood could've opted for further big budget epics, but took a sharp left turn with this better-than-average B-movie. Released just after Everything is Illuminated, another offbeat entry, Wood plays journalism student Matt Buckner. In the prologue, he's expelled from Harvard when his over-privileged roommate sets him up to take the fall for his own misdeeds. With nowhere to go, Matt decides to visit his sister, Shannon (Claire Forlani), in London. He's already got a chip on his shoulder when he falls under the sway of Shannon's brother-in-law, Pete (Charlie Hunnam), head of West Ham's football "firm," the Green Street Elite. Matt soon gets caught up in their thuggish antics—to tragic effect. In her feature debut, German-born Lexi Alexander makes a mostly convincing case for the attractions of violence to the emotionally vulnerable, as opposed to the emotionally numb pugilists of the more satirical Fight Club. Unlike David Fincher (by way of Chuck Palahniuk), she plays it straight, except for the stylized fight sequences. Consequently, humor is in short supply, but the young Brit cast, especially Leo Gregory as the surly Bovver, is charismatic and Wood makes his character as believable as possible, i.e. he may seem miscast, but that's the point. Although there's no (direct) correlation between the two, Green Street makes a fine taster for Bill Buford's Among the Thugs, the ultimate dissection of the hooligan mentality. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars Good flick w/Scorsese-style ending.......2007-06-10

Hmmm...almost as morbid as that lovely cornfield scene in Casino, at least that's what it reminded me of. I think this is one of Elijah Wood's better roles. He's so good at projecting the dorky (...), that seeing him morph from spineless wimp to someone able to defend himself...and be convincing, was awesome. Good show, and so atypical of Hollywood fluff in that it isn't the most predictable film you'll ever see.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome........2007-06-04

I may not be a huge fan of Football but I have a great amount of respect for there sports Hooligans. Some might be drawned away becasue they see Elijah Woods' face in the cover but believe me he surprised alot of people in this film. The fight scenes here are pretty brutal at times but no where near the brutality of the famed Fight Club. Charlie Hunnam give a great performance in this film who helps Elijahs character learn that there are time that you have to stand your ground and fight. This a great Indi film and to me is not considered as a B-film it's a A-list indi film.

5 out of 5 stars Burl Film .......2007-05-14

Burly as huck. Fightin and football. A good film about football firms.

4 out of 5 stars Good........2007-04-10

I'm not a fan of violence, but this movie was successful in making me understand to some degree how men such as these could enjoy wich a brutal hobby. I thought the struggle the central character went through was convincing and fascinating. It was only too bad that a few hokey moments sneaked in at the end.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as I.D........2007-04-07

Similarly set up to the 1995 film I.D. (though not as good), Green Street Hooligans sheds light on organized crime and hooliganism in England.
A Harvard student and journalism major is framed by his roommate and expelled from college on allegations of narcotics possession. Flying to England to visit his sister he gets drawn to the world of football violence.
Elijah Wood, and most of the cast's acting is pretty good, but nothing great.
Claire Forlani was delightful as Shannon; let's see more of her!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the music, are overall good.
In short, though not as good as I.D., Green Street Hooligans is still a film that will provide for an evenings' entertainment.

Between his high-octane debut, <I>Bad Boys</I>, and 1998's wannabe blockbuster <I>Armageddon</I>, hotshot director Michael Bay forged his dubious reputation with this crowd-pleasing action extravaganza. In it a psychotically disgruntled war hero (Ed Harris) seizes the island prison of Alcatraz and threatens to wage chemical warfare against nearby San Francisco unless the government publicly recognizes the men who were killed under Harris's top-secret command. Nicolas Cage plays the biochemist who teams up with the only man ever to have escaped from Alcatraz (Sean Connery) in an attempt to foil Harris's terrorist scheme. As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, and climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. It's a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, and there's enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable. If you're ordering this movie on DVD, be careful with the volume knobs on your home-theater sound systems, because <I>The Rock</I> could cause partial hearing loss and structural damage to your home. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

3 out of 5 stars Lotsa action, but that's about it........2007-05-08

Soldiers dropping like flys, an improbable ending, and restrained acting are the unfortunate highlights of this film. To me at least, the storyline was too weak, or at least the location. Just didn't work for me.

5 out of 5 stars Why The Rock deserves to be Criterion.......2007-04-24

It is the age old question. The first time I ever saw this on a friend's DVD shelf, I though that it must be some old 1930s noir movie titled "The Rock", but no, it was Michael Bay's action movie.

And I love me some Criterion collection, though I have to wonder why they put out The Rock and yet have long neglected Orson Welles' films.

In any case, the reason this movie deserves Criterion status is that it's probably one of the best action movies ever made. If you are looking for slam-bang, hammy acting, bullets everywhere, bad puns, buddy-cop drama, pseudo-governmental double-crossing, well, this is about as good as it gets. Whether or not it's you cup of tea is a different issue. But you just have to read Ebert's review to see why this movie is so damn good.

So buy it, put on your best surround, get an HDTV and watch the flashy explosions.

3 out of 5 stars Stupid but slick.......2007-01-15

This is probably Michael Bay's second best film, behind the original 'Bad Boys' (the sequel to which is surely one of the very worst pieces of "cinema" I've ever had the displeasure of seeing). The reason 'The Rock' falls behind his debut is obvious: Bay can't, to my mind, produce any sort of convincing dramatic effect; what little emotion the movie does evoke comes courtesy of the outstanding cast -- primarily Cage, Connery, and (by far the most of the bunch) Ed Harris. 'Bad Boys', on the other hand, was much more suited to Bay's ludicrous, a.d.h.d mentality; it was bogus, but never strove to be anything more -- and it was fun, and funny.

The concept of 'The Rock' is intriguing and unique, but the problem that reveals itself fairly quickly is that Bay uses it as a catalyst to throw in action scenes around every corner. I personally don't have a problem so much with the sequences themselves being ridiculous. The car chase scene, for example, in which Cage just happens to handle a ferarri (or lamborghini -- not really sure) like a professional driver of whatever sort, making his way through a circus-esque obstacle course of insane proportions, is beyond unrealistic. But hey, Bay's sense of speed and excitement, alongside Hans Zimmers' adrenalized score, provide for good, stupid fun. It's that, following this scene, the action just does not stop, and it's usually far less creative and ambitious. It's just quarrel after quarrel, gun fight after gun fight, and though Bay employs neat tricks here and there that make him a unique director, most of it ends up becoming monotonous and stale.

I don't even know if the film deserves three stars, because it's so hokey and implausible, but, it must be said, 'The Rock' was one of my very favorite movies back in high-school. Bay was also one of my favorite directors at that point, in contrast to my general spite towards the man at the current place in time -- times have changed; it doesn't help that every film proceeding 'The Rock' has been fairly atrocious, either. But the fact remains the man has incredible talent at establishing a particular visual mood and is able to conduct a sequence of shots that provide a rousing, flashy response. The final standoff in the film, as well as the climactic scene of Cage injecting the holy needle into his heart as jets prepare to blow-up the island, is, in its own way, exhillirating and awesomely impressive. But you know what? 'Armageddon' has sequences as such laced with brilliance too, but in the end it doesn't matter much when the overall film is such a turd. 'The Rock' isn't a turd, but it's not one of the greater action flicks out there -- not by a long shot. To my 14 year old self it might be, but to my more evolved, rational brain, it ain't I'm afraid.

5 out of 5 stars Watched it OVER AND OVER!!!!.......2006-11-10

This is a great movie. You sense a lot of sarcasm and cockiness throughout the movie which makes it even more enjoyable. Moments like when Sean Connery comes strolling out saying he's always the one left to the enemy. I watched this movie 5 nights in a row and I laughed and tensed up at the same places every time. This is just an overall good movie. It can get a little gory at times, but nonetheless, a great movie to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars This Is One Hot Title!.......2006-09-21

The Rock features pulse pounding nail biting edge of your seat entertainment. With names such as Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage and Ed Harris, you know you are in for a treat. It has some FBI action, some military action, and delivers intense action for the action movie fan. Did I say action enough? That is because this movie is full of it. Highly recommended.

<I>Meet Joe Black</I> seemed almost fated to fail when it was released in 1998, but this romantic fantasy--a remake of 1934's <I>Death Takes a Holiday</I>--deserves a chance at life after box-office death. Although many moviegoers were turned off by director Martin Brest's overindulgent three-hour running time, those who gear into its deliberate pace will find that <I>Meet Joe Black</I> offers ample reward for your attention.

Brad Pitt plays Death with a capital D, enjoying some time on Earth by inhabiting the body of a young man who'd been killed in a shockingly sudden pedestrian-auto impact. Before long, Death has ingratiated himself with a wealthy industrialist (Anthony Hopkins) and pursues romance with the man's beautiful daughter (newcomer Claire Forlani), whom he'd briefly encountered while still an earthbound human. Under the assumed identity of "Joe Black," he samples all the pleasures that corporeal life has to offer--power, romance, sex, and such enticing pleasures as peanut butter by the spoonful.

But Death has a job to do, and <I>Meet Joe Black</I> addresses the heart-wrenching dilemma that arises when either father or daughter (the plot keeps us guessing) must confront his or her inevitable demise. The film takes its own sweet time to establish this emotional crisis and the love that binds Hopkins's semidysfunctional family so closely together. But if you've stuck with the story this far, you may find yourself surprisingly affected. And if <I>Meet Joe Black</I> has really won you over, you'll more than appreciate the care and affection that gives the film a depth and richness that so many critics chose to ignore. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie........2007-06-15

I watched this movie for the first time while surfing through my HD Channels. But I'll admit that I wasn't interested in watching this movie when it was first released or any other time it was available on premium channels. However, more recently I have become more intrigued by Brad Pitt and it's probably because of all the current media hype he's recently received as half of the hottest Hollywood couple. Aside from wanting to see more of Brad and his acting, the picture quality was quite amazing and enough to get me into the movie. Each scene was like still life photography. From the rooms of the Parrish mansion to the boardroom, the color and tone of the set was just beautiful. Even some of the elements such as the cake samples were unique and colorful and lend such timelessness to this film. Although the sound editing put me and my remote to work with its highs (Music) and lows (Voice), the video quality fared much better as HD made for some wonderful viewing, especially of Brad. The early scene of Brad's freak pedestrian accident was so unfortunate, but convincing enough to link him to his Death character. I anticipated every scene and found some scenes and acting a bit quirky (peanut butter), while other scenes, particularly the intimate one, simply enthralling. Needless to say, I became a willing hostage up to the party scene, at which time I had to pull myself away for another urgent commitment. However, I will have to savor the rest and probably the best parts of the film for when I purchase the DVD. I really look forward to viewing it again from beginning and to the very end.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2007-06-08

What a cast! Anthony Hopkins his usual professional self and Brad Pitt doing as well. It would have earned a 5 star rating but for the times that the musical background overwhelmed conversations, especially intimate ones. Not a problem if one uses close captioning.

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful, touching film!.......2007-06-03

Today is the first time I have seen this movie and I must say I am amazed at the depth of the story and the love in the family. I had no idea how deep and moving the story was. Admittedly, I had no interest in seeing this movie when it first came out because I am not a Brad Pitt fan, but I have to admit he puts on an amazing performance in his ability to show his love for Susan through his facial expressions...just breathtaking.

Sir Anthony Hopkins also delivered an amazing performance, as always. Regardless of what role he is playing in a movie, he always manages to take me breath away; I just love him. He is one of few actors in Hollywood would actually enjoy meeting.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-05-22

Nevermind what you hear about the length of this film. The beautiful and almost flawless acting on the part of all makes up for it. Especially moving are Brad, Claire and (of course) Anthony Hopkins. Not to forget to mention the music! Awesome! I would watch this movie over and over again. There is almost always something you miss that, when found or realized, makes the movie even more touching and awesome and you are able to appreciate even more the hard work that was put into it. Perfect movie for an evening at home. A true audio/visual conversational masterpeice.

Anyone who's ever been passionate about golf will find something to admire in <I>Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius</I>, a staidly reverent biopic about one of the game's greatest champions. In the title role, Jim Caviezel suffers almost as much as he did in <I>The Passion of the Christ</I>, portraying Jones--who made history by winning golf's elusive Grand Slam (four top tournaments in less than four months) in 1930--as a passionately committed golfer who silently endured chronic pain (a spinal disorder prompted his early retirement at age 28), stomach ailments, emotional torment, and borderline alcoholism while maintaining amateur status in the sport he so magnificently dominated. Jeremy Northam brings much-needed levity and rakish style as Jones' friend and rival golfer Walter Hagen, and Malcolm McDowell adds colorful character as Jones' friend and biographer O.B. Keeler while Claire Forlani suffers the typical biopic plight of the hero's wife, who offers compassionate empathy while wishing Jones had more time for family. With repetitive golf scenes and a somber tone of martyrdom, <I>Bobby Jones</I> was partially financed by Jones' estate, which may explain its respectable dullness and instant fate as a box-office dud. Still, director Rowdy (<I>Road House</I>) Herrington is clearly enamored of his subject, and some of that enthusiasm shines through the gloom. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Jones, Stroke of Genius.......2007-01-27

A great golf film ... if one loves golf you have to enjoy this movie ... the critics bashed it for the usual reasons .. story line, acting, etc., and true, there are NO car chases or car crashes, no buildings get blown up, and there are few if any four letter words ... but a very enjoyable movie .... which the whole family can watch in comfort ... highly recommended for the golf "nut" in the family.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Jones, Stroke of Genius.......2007-01-03

Excellent movie; my husband and I already owned the movie. Being raised in a golfing family (my dad and his brothers played with Sam Snead when they were kids), and went to see Bobby Jones play. We are golf fanatics, and have always been great fans of Bobby Jones. This movie is a very realistic interpretation of his life. I bought another copy to give to my remaining uncle (he's 90!) and he has watched it 5 times since we gave it to him. Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in a TRUE legend of golf whose talent outshines all there is today. Jim Caviezel gave a spectactular performance!

Filter a <I>Twilight Zone</I> vibe through Stephen King's brain and you get <I>Nightmares & Dreamscapes</I>, an uneven but generally entertaining collection of eight tales that originally (2006) aired on TNT. There is no unifying theme here; although King's short stories provided the source material, there are six directors and seven screenwriters represented, so the episodes offer a variety of looks and styles, with content ranging from monsters to mind games, from pure fantasy to pulp fiction, from genuinely scary to merely unsettling. Still, a certain ineffably "King-ian" sensibility, combining elements of horror, terror, suspense, and whimsy, is always in evidence, as are the popular writer's own preoccupations (with authors who may or not be stand-ins for King himself, rock 'n' roll, and guys who won't ask for directions while their wives complain, inevitably leading them into very nasty situations).

Among the highlights: In "Battleground," a merciless hit man (William Hurt) offs a toy manufacturer and then finds himself attacked in his own apartment by a battalion of indefatigable toy soldiers; directed by Brian Henson, the episode has no dialogue and some terrific effects work. In "Umney's Last Case," William H. Macy is amusing as a crime writer who cruelly toys with his literary alter ego, an arch, fedora-wearing gumshoe (also Macy); it's an acting <I>tour de force</I> and a story that takes some deft and intriguing turns. "The Road Virus Heads North," with Tom Berenger as a horror novelist who finds himself pursued by… well, by a painting (guess you had to be there), is perhaps the scariest of the lot; it's also the best shot, with a cool jazz soundtrack and a nifty ending. Less successful is "Crouch End," set in a sinister part of London where "thin spots" in the earth lead to creepy new dimensions (nice premise, but it's overwritten and fails to sustain its <I>Twilight Zone weirdness), while "You Know They Got a Hell of Band" is only fitfully effective in its depiction of Rock & Roll Heaven, Oregon, a town where Elvis is mayor and the rest of the living dead range from Hendrix and Joplin to Duane Allman and Buddy Holly. The three-disc set's decent if unexceptional special features include "inside looks" at the making of several episodes, actor interviews, and more. <I>--Sam Graham</I>

2 out of 5 stars Hit and Miss as with many "anthology" series . . . This one . . . Mostly a Miss.......2007-06-05

All anthology series like Twilight Zone: The Complete Definitive Collection and The Outer Limits - The Original Series, Season 1 have hits and misses and the endless parade of stars don't always promise a successful episode and don't compenstate for poor writing. I am a long time Stephen King fan and sad to say much of his work has translated poorly to the screen because adaptors of his work only seem to focus the the physical world of King and not his more thoughtful and moral side which doesn't always translate well to the large or small screen. This series typifies that criticism.

"Battleground" is the most engaging, facinating, and compelling episode of the whole 8 episode series and it's accomplished without a single word of dialogue. "Autopsy Room Four" is also very clever and different. However, the rest of the episodes range from mildly interesting and even funny, to silly and incomprehensible. It's not what it could have been and that is all too typical with Stephen King adaptations.

3 out of 5 stars not so nightmarish or a escape from dreams.......2007-05-08

I saw the previews for this quite a few times last spring, in the threatre, prior too its airing on tnt network(i think).Well I missed the whole series on tv debute,so when i seen it on sale in Amazons gold box I
jumped too it.I am sorry i did.The multple stories play like a cross between twilght zone and tales from the crypt. Without a host & lacking the suspence:that usally makes up for the gore in a tv series. It's been almost a month sence i struggled through this set of stories. Here are two show that stand out right now the best and the worst. What i thought was the best is"They have a Hell of a Band"This story is about a not so happy couple. The guy really diggs the 50's &60's rock era.He has the car&style too show for it.He's a real Manly/Man ,He shows his girl freind he don't need a map or direction too correct the wrong turn he made on there drive. This great sense of direction brings them too the town, rock and roll heaven-right out of a 50/60 show(think back too the futurish set).Relcutent girl gives in too the prositent guys wims. The plan grab a bite and a couple of slivoniers. This leads them too being trap for all time. The Idol look likes are pretty good to really good. The easyest reckonized
; I thought was:Buddy Holly. The worse was Elvis .Speaking of the worse. The show that gets this award is the one (forgot title)staring the guy who played johnboy on the waltons(whats his name). He's a big time office man in the big city, while in the back woods of a (think it was florida) golf course, hes bit by a snake-declared dead by a doctor who looks way too old too be praticing still. As a result he spends the day in the morgue.Fortunetly the woman in charge is more interested in the guys who are suppose too be her aids.We get too watch a half hour of two people in denile of there feelings-debate on what happened too this apparent dead guy,who in the meantime,is giving a rather droll narretive.Besides being bad this show deos not say much for small southern health care.Inconclusion I whould really give this series a 2.5 but out of almost a cross between fan & respect toward king's work in general i round it painfully up too a3.BUYER YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Stephen King adaptations........2007-03-15

Very well done series. Very good to the source material. These short films rock. They do the written works justice. Great performances by all, well written, well shot, and great execution. I would recomend this to all who like good Stephen King adaptations and to fans of this genre. You'll love it. I did.

3 out of 5 stars Hypocrites having a field day.......2007-02-22

This show has only one problem - but, to me at least, it's big enough to deserve a loss of two stars. In the interviews provided on the DVD you can listen to directors, screenwriters and actors alike who all praise Stephen King and his story-telling power. They all but fall on their knees when they talk about his short stories. Yet they're hypocrites because they felt the deep need to IMPROVE said stories. It's like: "Well, of course the stories are good, but look, WE can make them better!" Therefore, a true King fan will incredulously watch a different (and often WORSE) version of the story he knows, wondering why these changes were made and how anyone could possibly believe they could improve the author's original.
The ridiculous Rambo-doppelganger in "Battleground"? Not in the story. The wife driven to suicide, whose jump from a high building can mysteriously be seen in two worlds in "Umney's Last Case"? Not in the story. Or, worst of all, the completely brainless ending of "Crouch End", with a twist that is so senseless that you can only call it embarrassing. There's more: Kinnell's portrayal as a possible cancer patient gives "The Road Virus Heads North" a totally new direction not intended by King - this climaxes with the villain's words 'I'm what you don't know: I'm your fear' - if you believe it or not.
So why are there even three stars? Because the casting and the acting are great (with the exception of the nurse in "Autopsy Room Four", who I found to be completely unconvincing), the setups and the atmosphere are worthy of King and because I do support the idea of finally filming these great stories. I hope for a continuation of the series - but with the aim to film the stories, not to improve them for the worse.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool!.......2007-01-23

Having read a bunch of reviews which were less-than-complimentary, but being one who will try any Stephen King adaptation for the screen, I had to grab a copy anyway.
No, it is not the best bunch of King adaptations around, but it is entertaining, clever, and full of those King-isms that I for one have grown to anticipate and love, particularly when Mick Garris is behind the camera!

There are Eight stories here, all around 45min each. I am two-thirds of the way through the bunch, so I'll spare you any major breakdowns of each story. Many other reviewers have covered this ground already, anyway.

All I would like to really say is that if you are a fan of Stephen King's TV and big-screen adaptations, it would be a good idea to give this one a look!

Product Description

From Kevin Smith, the acclaimed director of Clerks, comes this outrageous story of two loafers, Jeremy London (The Babysitter) and Jason Lee (Kissing a Fool), who spend way too much time hanging out at the mall.

When Brodie (Lee) is dumped by his girlfriend, Shannen Doherty (Heathers, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun), he retreats to the mall with his best friend T.S. (London), whose girlfriend has also left him. Between brooding and visits to the food court, the unmotivated twosome decide to win their girlfriends back with the help of the ultimate delinquents, Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) and Jay (Jason Mewes), whose continuing adventures take the word nuisance to a whole new level.

Sophomore jinx hit hard in this second film by Kevin Smith, whose debut <I>Clerks</I> transcended the limits of its setting and budget to become something memorably funny. (Smith followed <I>Mallrats</I> with the wonderful <I>Chasing Amy</I>, so <I>Mallrats</I> definitely had the old curse.) A ramshackle comedy set in a mall, the film follows several story lines involving lovers, enemies, friends, goofballs, and Smith's own "silent" character, who also appeared in <I>Clerks</I> and <I>Chasing Amy</I>. A heavy self-consciousness weighs on everything, as if Smith forgot how to make obscenity funny instead of tedious. Still, it's nice to see some of the director's film family on screen, among them Jason Lee and Joey Lauren Adams. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars I threw her away like a parking ticket..........2007-06-07

This movie is by far the second best movie by Kevin Smith (first is Clerks II). Brody and T.S. are some of the most overlooked characters in Kevin Smith's world. Between Jay & Silent Bob's best jobs, the sailboat, the stink palm, and the other hysterical characters in this movie, you have to watch this one to understand some of the humor in some of Kevin's later movies.

I loved this movie, and if you arent into all the sex-related dialogue of Clerks and Jay & Silent Bob, this is THE movie to pick up to get into the series.

(I have watched it enough times to memorize all of the lines, and yet I still laugh at it, its just that good.)

    5 out of 5 stars fantatic.......2007-05-22

this is a really funny movie, with jay and silent bob at their best. Although it is probably kevins worst movie, it still is great, and definitley worth a buy.

5 out of 5 stars what can I say, its good.......2007-05-04

Not my fav of the Kevin Smith movies but one to see. I have seen it quite a few times. Good movie.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Underground Movie.......2007-01-14

Jay and Silent Bob often command a sort of cult following with their screenplays and this is quite possibly one of their best. Middle America can relate to the travesties of TS and Brodie all to well as our heros battle complacency and women. I love this movie, and stay away from escalators!!!

Ever wonder if there was a class system in the world of superheroes? After all the big names like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc., who were the supporting players? The folks assigned to the less-than-stellar gigs of saving only a small part of the world? According to this intermittently successful send-up of comic book heroism, there are indeed masked heroes who struggle and toil for their moment in the super sun. Based on the Dark Horse comic book series, <I>Mystery Men</I> follows the travails of three B-list avengers--Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller), the Shoveler (William H. Macy), and the Blue Raja (Hank Azaria)--as they fight to make themselves known to the citizens of Champion City, quite difficult to do when the flashy Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear, never better) takes all the cool gigs <I>and</I> has product endorsements up the ying-yang. According to them, it's all a matter of timing--never mind that Mr. Furious never rises above a snit, or that the Blue Raja wears green. Their big break comes when Captain Amazing is abducted by the evil Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush), and it's up to this motley crew to save Champion City.

Blessed with a wondrously gifted comic cast and full of droll details, <I>Mystery Men</I> struggles in fits and spurts towards its climax. Transcendently witty in parts, it's also woefully sophomoric in others. Literally, this is the kind of movie in which someone gets off a brilliant line and then sits on a fork. Still, when this movie is rolling, it's gleefully on target, thanks primarily to the mordantly cocky Stiller and Janeane Garofalo as a latecomer to the superhero gang; her secret weapon is a bowling ball in which her dead father's head is encased. The comic chemistry between these two is fierce, and when you add the dryly funny Macy and the endearing Azaria (who finally gets a chance to let loose with his comic gifts), it's a hilarious joyride. Too bad that the gas tank is only half-full; this stunning cast deserves a first-rate vehicle. With Tom Waits as a weapons expert, Claire Forlani as the requisite babe, and Paul Reubens as the Spleen, the world's most flatulent superhero. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

5 out of 5 stars Everything great about bad superhero movies.......2007-03-22

This movie characterizes just how bad the superhero movie industry was at one time and turns it into GinGOLD! Ben Stiller steals the show and does his serious ridiculous routine so well! Paul Ruben takes a little away from the movie but not enough to take away from dynamic performances of this group!

      4 out of 5 stars Disco Boys.......2007-03-09

Dude, it's all about the Disco Boys. Having Claire Forlani is a plus as well. They are the "real deal" heroes that don't get to play in the big leagues like Batman and Superman, but they still are heroic and get the job done. Even though they make fun of the superhero genre, at least they did it with pinache.

4 out of 5 stars it grows on you.........2007-01-05

The first time I saw this I didn't particularly like it. But, much like Galaxy Quest, after a couple more viewings I began to see things I'd missed and now it's high on my list of favorites. It would be higher but I really don't like Ben Stiller.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Campy Movie!.......2006-11-03

Mystery Men is one of my favorite movies! As an avid player of "Champions," a role-playing game based on comic book heroes, this movie is a blast! Bumbling wannabe heroes come through with panache - what's more fun than that? Campy villians, odd super powers, and goofy non-lethal weapons!! This movie has it all!

4 out of 5 stars My Kind Of Super-Heroes!.......2006-10-31

"Mystery Men" by all accounts is a failure at comedy to most everyone I know. And yet, every time I watch this film [a telling sign you like a film] I still find it hilarious. Now, to be honest I did not like the film when I first watched it. However, on second and subsequent viewings I found myself in stitches and realized I rushed to judgment on the film. These are my kind of superheroes! Faults and all. The film will not appeal to many viewers, but it appeals to me. I am the only one, so far as I know, who happens to like this film in my family. Therefore, caution must be taken when I view it. Curtains drawn, doors locked, and absolute quiet. No, it's not that bad, however, my wife tells me she will hide it if I attempt to watch it in her presence again. Can't help it--I like it.

As I have written before, comedy is a personal thing. People [friends and relatives] can rant and rave about all the funny films out there in filmland that they find funny. Most of which I find turgid. Therefore, I can understand how some people are turned off by this film. Comedy is a personal thing. Some of us like certain things we think are funny, others are totally different. And that is what makes comedy so unique. Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller) was pretty darn funny in this film. I especially really liked his interaction with The Sphinx (Wes Studi), whom he refers to as Mr. Conundrum. There were so many things in the film I missed the first time around, that I am glad I viewed it again.

And the rest of the eccentric characters in the film complimented this super-hero cast. However, the role portrayed by (Greg Kinnear) as Captain Amazing was really funny. The way he pokes fun of the others in a facetious way was hysterically funny. And he later pays the price too! And then finally there is Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush). What a name! His portrayal as the devious-minded criminal who matches wits with Captain Amazing was funny as hell. But it is the rest of the cast which makes this film enjoyable too. From The Bowler (Janeane Garofalo) The Spleen (Paul Reubens) The Shoveller (William H. Macy) and The Blue Raja (Hank Azaria), the entire film was a delight. Recommended. For required tastes only!

5 out of 5 stars Memories of My high School Years.......2007-01-04

I wish I saw this when I was in high school
