Good Family Fun.......2007-01-21
Great movie for the family. Positive message about it not being what you have, but what you have inside you. Also the proverbial good guy wins theme
Macaulay Culkin's last movie for 9 years .......2006-09-03
This is what you might call as Macaulay Culkin's farewell to childhood, or his life as a child actor, by making this movie, and then not appearing in another movie for 9 long years, and even in that period of time, there might have been plenty of fans that forgotten him until he made and released Party Monster in 2003, but that movie really doesn't have much to do this movie, and I bet even at the end of 1994, that people where saying and thinking that this would be Macaulay Culkin's last ever movie or even as a child actor, even through he reached the age of 14 on August 26th, 1994. The movie is Richie Rich, where you might also see two cent signs in place of the two c's in the title. At the beginning of the movie Ritchie Rich is born to Richard (Edward Herrmann) and Regina Rich (Christine Ebersole) , and then 12 years later it looks like he has everything, he has his own butler Herbert Cadbury (Jonathan Hyde), and is the richiest kid in the world, but where are his friends? Oh yeah, he doesn't have any, not like he is mean, his father saved a company from going out of busines, but can't be at the grand re-openning so he sends Richie who even spends time playing baseball, and spots local kids playing baseball, but because of his busy schedule he is not allowed to even join in the game. So he decicees that this is the missing part of his life. And along being the heir to his family riches, he even has a cool satellite-driven Dadlink, that is acomputer system, that tracks down Richard from wherever he is, so Richie can chat with him as he wishes too, when his Dad is out on the road. And there is family inventor Professor Keenbean (Michael McShane), who is apart of Richie's life, and is his teacher in chemistory class. But then his whole family including Richie is invited to tea and crimpits with the queen of England, and his Dad's own presonal advisor (John Larroquette), has had enough of his employer's philanthropic investments and charitable contributions, and he wants to get to thier hidden vault, so he decides to kill the family by placing a gift in thier airplane with a bomb, but when Richie looks upset, about his lastest go round trying to make friends, Cadbury asks his Mom's premisson to keep him home from the trip, so he can keep his busy with a schedule and she agrees, and then they take off, unaware of wait is waitng for them on the plane. Cadbury even manges to convince a kids that they saw play basbeall, and tried to make friends, but they turned him down the day before, to play with Richie, and well you should get where the movie is going from here, but please if oyu want to watch the movie, watch it to find out what happens next, and if you like any of the cast member,s that is good enough reason to watch this film.
Funny as your friend getting kicked in the stones!.......2006-01-04
This movie moved me. It moved me to tears. The story of Richard Rich is a tragic one. A child and raised without knowing a mother's embrace or a father's guidance. This young lad had his father's love replaced with diamonds and his mother's care replaced with duckets.
While it is true that the movie almost makes light of these facts, I was able to see past the pseudo front act that this movie puts out to see what the producer was really saying.
This movie is dramatic, painful, and at times, depressing. Between this and Shindler's List, I am not sure how we got out of the 90's!
A Fine Film, If Not 100% True to the Cartoon.......2005-12-03
Richie Rich is the world's poor little rich boy. He's the richest kid on Earth, but all he really wants are friends (well, he's got everything else). He spends his days living by a meticulous schedule that sometimes even includes filling in for his father at public appearances. His wealthy schoolmates are just as busy as he is and not quite as desperate to do "regular kid things" as Richie. While filling in for his father at a public event, however, Richie takes notice of some inner-city, street-wise kids playing baseball in a vacant lot nearby and makes an attempt to join in. They soon make it clear that he does not belong, and poor Richie goes home in despair. Seeing his disappointment, Richie's protective and caring butler, Cadbury, makes arrangements for the kids to come to the Rich family mansion and spend a day with the boy, much to Richie's joy and surprise! The gang of kids have a ball riding Richie's rollercoaster, trying out his kid-a-pult, and eating in his own, personal McDonald's. At the end of the day, Richie's new friends have accepted him as being just another regular kid, though they more than appreciate the benefits that come with his friendship. Still, feisty redhead Gloria, self-appointed leader of the bunch, makes it clear that they like Richie more for who he is than for all the neat stuff he has. Richie doesn't have much time to be happy about that, though. Word soon arrives that Richie's parents, benign but sometimes clueless Richard and Regina Rich, were victims of an assassination attempt and are now lost at sea and assumed dead. As the Riches survive in a life raft on Perrier and champagne, Richie is forced to take over the family company and keep it safe from malicious top executive Lawrence Van Dough, who planned the attack on Richie's parents in the first place. Luckily, with his new friends' help, Richie turns out to be a business whiz! Richie has to become even more assertive when Cadburry is framed and locked up for the murder of Richie's parents though. Some help from in-house inventor Professor Keenbean allows Richie to break Cadburry out, but matters become even more complicated when the Rich parents finally are rescued by the villainous Van Dough and his cronies themselves, purely so they can open the voice-activated lock on the family vault in Mt. Richmore. Now, Richie and his crew must prove their mettle and save Richie's parents and fortune from a criminal desperate to do anything to have it all!
After the wonderful holiday films "Home Alone" and "Home Alone 2" turned child-actor Macaulay Culkin into an instant superstar, he sadly seemed incapable of having another success. 1994's "Richie Rich" was just one example of several films the young actor made after his big Christmas hits that failed to strike a chord with movie going audiences or critics. Sadly, "Richie Rich" is really a great film. While not a perfect adaptation of the comic and cartoon (the villainous Van Dough is an adult exec here rather than a rotten cousin, Gloria is unfortunately a cute but street-sassy tomboy with a last-name change rather than Richie's sweet and femininely dressed girlfriend, and Irona the robot maid/bodyguard is nowhere to be seen until the direct to video "sequel"), the performances, particularly the adult ones, are fantastic, fun, well developed and well fleshed-out considering their cartoon origins, and easily carry the very basic cartoon plot. The humor and emotion is well-written, even if it's an age-old story of the rich kid who just wants friends. And, of course, the sights are the icing on the cake, from the kooky inventions of Professor Keenbean to the glorious Rich Family Estate (actually the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina), not to mention the world's only Dollarmation, Richie's dog, Dollar! The DVD is in widescreen and includes one Bonus Feature, which is the theatrical trailer. Hey, "Richie Rich" isn't rocket science, but it's a feast for the eyes and a fun family fantasy from beginning to end that brings back childhood memories of Saturday morning cartoons and Harvey comics, and with actors like Edward Herrmann, John Larroquette, and Jonathan Hyde in a live-action cartoon, you know you're in for a treat!
Even for a Kid's Movie, This Film is Lame.......2005-10-11
Ouch! We can add another batch of compost to the trash heap that is Macaulay Culkin's career. While he may have been somewhat entertaining in HOME ALONE, by the time RICHIE RICH was made, Culkin's lack of real depth is on full display. While I won't say that this is the worst kid's movie I have ever seen, it is definitely up there.
I agree with other reviewers that speak about the film's mixed messages. For example, we are supposed to believe that a man who has singlehandedly built an empire that could topple other nations is completely disinterested in money & wealth, choosing instead to lock up his memories in his secret vault and spend all of his time canoodling with his wife. Moreover, there is a problem surrounding Richie's dilemma. It is an old one: the rich kid with no friends. Richie just wants to play baseball like everyone else. The movie is, to a large extent, a resolution of that problem. What's the solution? Have your father build a baseball diamond in your backyard, furnish your friends with uniforms, and allow you all to have a ball (complete with an in-house umpire). The message: money can't buy you love. But, oh boy, does it help!
I remember really enjoying the cartoon while I was a kid, but this film fails to recreate the "feeling" of those comics. Instead, it exploits the few talents Culkin has and goes for the classic, boring family movie. Don't bother with RICHIE RICH. You're better off sticking to other gems in Culkin's trash-pile, such as HOME ALONE or HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK.

James Toback's portrait of white and black culture mixing it up on the streets of Manhattan is like two films colliding. In the center of the swirl are a group of upper-class white teens (led by Elijah Wood and pop singer Bijou Phillips) who appropriate hip-hop culture to rebel against their affluent lifestyle, and a posse of gangstas and drug dealers (led by rap producer Oli "Power" Grant) who are themselves trying to get off the streets and into the business culture through their music. Aging indie filmmaker Toback has long shown an interest in character contradictions and quirks. Here the dynamic works: The two groups are genuinely curious about one another and mix with a cautious but untroubled ease. Less successful is the contrived drama that orbits this cultural mix but never quite meshes--such as Ben Stiller as a self-loathing New York cop who blackmails college basketball star Allan Houston into betraying his boyhood buddy turned street criminal.
Toback spices his Altmanesque style of restless camera work and impressionistic intercutting with attitude, nervous energy, and in-your-face sex. There's an interesting story to be told here, but the provocative cultural mix gets lost in the self-conscious melodrama and only periodically roars to life, notably in the edgy, unpredictable scenes with Mike Tyson (an inspired bit of casting that works marvelously). Also featured are rapper Raekwon, supermodel Claudia Schiffer, Brooke Shields, and Robert Downey Jr. --Sean Axmaker

Incoherent mix.......2006-03-16
I'm not an American so I don't know the relationships between whites and blacks, but I think both are presented at their worst in this movie. Some stupid impossible situations with no coherent flow, a lot of open sex, "nothing sacred" - nothing to aspire to in this movie. I bought it despite the bad reviews because I am a huge Elijah Wood fan, and I must tell you that he does shine as always, but only for a few short moments, so it's not worth your money - you will have to suffer to the end to see him kiss Brook Shields. I gave it 2 stars (and not 1)because it is not a mainstream movie, it is a bit different from everything i saw and maybe sometimes funny and interesting, but you know it's all not real.
Cooperate not segregate.......2005-12-27
Finally a movie that shows black and white unite and learn about each other's culture. There are various stars in this movie from comedians to athletes, and musicians to actors. Each actor or entertainer played a part. There should be more movies like this one to cut out the sterotype in our American society. I think white kids should stop loving rap, they will turn into negative people. I love seeing Mike Tyson play a small part in this film.
Worth Watching But This One is Not For Every One.......2005-11-04
I live in New York City and I could relate to this film. It was not a perfect movie but I think anyone who has some real experience in the New York area, especially in the hip-hop scene might find it interesting, but not necessarily totally accurate. I think Toback is trying to explore stereotypes though. I do not think that he is actually endorsing them here, but, instead, satirizing them - the drug dealer, the sports athlete, the macho male black sex fiend and the rapper. He has some moderate understanding of the peculiar way that blacks and whites are relating to each other in the new era, at least in New York. There are some really telling scenes when Mike Tyson castigates Brooke Shield's camera saying something like : "Wondering what the animal will do next?". I think Toback is trying to explore America's race-obsession but in a very subtle understated way. Hence, the looming camera of Brook Shields (i.e."the media") and the ridiculous questions she asks. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, much of the movie seems so contrived and over-acted. But I am glad he at least tried to explore this topic. I think it will definently appeal more, to strong Wu-tang fans, New Yorkers and younger folks though. He gets an A for effort; C for execution.

Black & White is mostly engaging and thought provoking, rarely boring, with a cast of complex characters. The most distinctive thing about the film is that there really is no star, no lead character, and that works for the film. It's also messy, and while offering some moments of insight, it left me with more questions than answers, and that's what I dislike about this film. Toback appears to have a genuine interest in racial/social issues, but is reluctant to commit to a perspective. The most puzzling moment was when the white girl calls herself a "nigga". Is she supposed to be a caricature, or a serious character? Does Toback believe this to be a common example of urban white kid behaviour? Does he know kids that do this? I'm assuming no. So why use such an extreme unrealistic device to drive home the point of white kids' admiration for hip-hop culture? Why not do it in a subtler more realistic way, so it doesn't have the jarring effect on the viewer, making you pause like "wtf did she just say?". Toback's languid commentary track offers no insight into what he was trying to do in the less comprehensible scenes, but it does make it clear that he takes himself and the movie very seriously. I don't know if I can call this film "good", but it is thought provoking and therefore worth watching. Maybe Toback would have had a better end product if he just made an actual documentary and let real kids speak for themselves.
A Review of the film "Black and White".......2005-04-01
"Black and White" works in obvious stereotypes, but it is nonetheless a compelling look at the interaction of black kids and white kids in hip-hop culture. It is brutally honest in many respects, including its use of language, drug use, and sexual situations. Everybody uses the word 'Nigga' with everybody else they're friends with. One of the white female characters even explains the difference between the more derisive 'Nigger' and the more hip, inclusionary 'Nigga' to the non-comprehending. The film also deals with the very real aspect of how some hip hop stars got their start dealing in illicit activities as real gangsters, so the gangerism is real and gritty. The acting is largely improvised, so it sounds spontaneous and fresh. Mike Tyson makes a brilliant but too short appearance as himself, turning in a startling performance that is worth seeing the movie for alone. The ensemble cast is filled with bright young lights although nobody hogs the show, but its always fun to watch Robert Downey Jr., this time as a gay man on the down low married to Brooke Shields, a wannabe filmmaker trying to make a documentary about white kids who love hip hop. There is a senseless murder and tintillating interracial sex along with the gangland thuggery. This is like "Jungle Fever" for 'Niggaz' and 'Wiggaz' on the hip hop tip, and features real hip hop artists who also turn in fresh performances. Highly recommended.

Best Workout Tapes - EVER!.......2007-05-18
I have owned all four of the Claudia Schiffer workout tapes since they come out over ten years ago. I'm a workout tape junkie, I have dozens, but these are my faves. Claudia is a pleasure to watch - very real, which is a nice break from some of the perky instructors on many tapes. She even struggles at times, which is encouraging for us non-models! There are frequent pop-ins of her trainer explaining correct form to keep it all professional. The workouts include target specific exercises, usually with 10-30 reps each, and a warm-up and cool-down. If you're a beginner, you may not be able to complete all the reps the first few times you do these workouts...and you will be sore!! But after a few times you will see and feel the results and you'll be hooked!! Highly, highly recommended!
Great arm workout!.......2006-02-26
I have used this tape a few weeks now, twice a week, and it still isn't easy to do. My arms and shoulders feel worked! I really like how this series of exercises works all three aspects of the deltoids, as well as the upper back, chest and arms. I'm getting ready for summer, none too soon. I'm sure this series will get me there. (I especially like the legs workout in this series as well.)
Great arm workout!.......2006-02-26
I have used this tape four weeks now, twice a week with 5 lb. weights, and it still isn't easy to do. My arms and shoulders feel worked! There are three sets of each exercise, which actually work my muscles to fatigue. I really like how this combination of exercises works all three aspects of the deltoids, as well as the upper back, chest and arms. I'm getting ready for summer, none too soon. I'm sure this series of tapes will get me there. (I especially like the legs workout as well.)
The best upper body workout EVER!!!.......2006-02-24
I started this tape in the beginning of January 2006. I started out with 3 lb weights and after three weeks I was up to 5 lb weights.
I cannot beging to describe how effective this is. After 2 months, I still sweat and I still push to do all the reps. When I first started out, I couldn't do a single push up now I can do all sets.
I was curious as to why this tape focuses so much on triceps and so little on biceps. My fiance (who is a weight-lifting buff) said that the upper arms are 80% tricep and only 20% bicep. Many people make the mistake of working out the bicep more than the tricep. Your triceps will HURT after the first day. After that, you will want to keep working them to get rid of that "jiggle."
Buy this tape - you will not be disappointed!
A very effective arm work-out.......2003-06-04
I really Love the Perfectly Fit series. They are a great way to tone up. What I really like is that there is not a distracting group of people behind the main person or trainer. I LOVE it. Thank you Kathy Kaehler and Claudia Schiffer.

Absolutely amazing.......2006-12-13
I finished doing this video for the first time exactly one minute ago, so I can't testify yet for long-term results. However, I have to say that I found it amazing. I have knee problems, and I liked to see that Kathy Kaehler not only made sure that each exercise (especially lunges, squats, hamstring stretches) was done in a way safe for the knees, but she repeatedly reminded me of the proper ankle-knee alignment.
I love floor leg work, and this is the most intensive I've ever experienced. It might not be as good for flexibility as Pilates, but it's also not jerky or bouncy -- just a steady variety of leg lifts that get your thighs and [...] burning in no time. (Yes, I was also frustrated with Claudia for not feeling the pain the way I was. Then again, she probably feels that pain every day.) Even the inner thigh lifts, if you really try to lift your leg high, produce an immediate effect.
The video is odd because you hear mostly Kaehler's lower, softer voice giving instructions, counts, and tips, with a few of the main instructions and encouragements from Schiffer. I kind of liked it though.
Love it - wish it were on DVD!!!.......2006-05-31
I have owned this tape for 10 years - bought it from a Newport News catalogfor $10 at the time. MAN do I wish I had been doing it for the past 10 years!! Now 38, I am really feeling the "approaching 40" expansion of my hips & thighs; and was devastated when I measured and found that my THIGHS were the size my WAIST was when I was 23. Boy does that suck.
So, I dragged this tape out with not very high expectations. I have been doing it roughly twice a week for about a month and a half. Lo & behold I have taken about an inch off of my hips & thighs, and my calves are quickly retoning themselves. I have much more energy as a result.
While following the tape, you may find yourself cursing out Ms Schiffer and Ms Kaehler (particularly when you realize neither of them are sweating, huffing or puffing one quarter the amount you are), but stick with it - you will not be sorry. I recently added the suggested ankle weights - completely worth the extra effort!
I really wish that all 4 of her workouts were on one DVD. I'd really like to give the others a try.
Solid workout for thighs and hips.......2006-02-02
This workout burns the side thighs and hips very nicely! The rhythm of the counting was off way too frequently, and that was distracting, but I now just turn down the volume so I follow the visual and count on my own. Three sets of ten for most exercises, easy enough. Doing the hamstring lifts are so much more efficient with added ankle weights, as they suggest. And I am sorry the stretching is so brief. I pause the tape to do a deeper stretch while I'm heated up so I can keep my muscles long.
I do like the exercises in this program, and they are effective. Though the tape isn't perfect, the burn is worth my time.
Get sleek, sexy, and shapely legs! I did!.......2006-02-01
I am a big fan of this tape. The moves are simple but effective and you will feel the burn. Doing these exercises along with cardio will get you results. My previously chunky legs are so beautiful. There is no chatty instructor. Kathy Kaehler, the trainer, will briefly show you how to do the exercises, and then you just hear counting, brief tips from Kathy and Claudia is shown in several different frames doing the exercise. The style of the video is kind of artsy, but nothing is too distracting not even the music.
You start out with a brief warm-up with includes plies and a few standing lunges along with stretches. Then the first segment includes squats and lunges. You do 3 sets with 10 repetitions of each. I could stand for a few more reps of lunges, hence the four stars instead of five.
The next segment entails hamstring curls and calf raises. (You use a chair for balance and leg weights are optional. You will still feel the burn without them.) In total you actually do 6 sets of calf raises with, three sets are slow and the other three are pulsing with 15 reps each. You change the position of your feet with each set (toes pointed out, in and then neutral.) Then you do three sets of hamstring curls. To end this segment you stretch the muscles you just worked.
The final segment is done on the floor and you can use optional leg weights and a mat. You do leg lifts and kicks to work your inner and outer thighs. You alternate between a set of slow repetitions and pulses for 3 sets each. This segment really burns. Ouch! But your legs will look so nice. You finish with a nice soothing stretch.
Overall this is very effective workout which I highly recommend! :)
This Tape Works!.......2005-06-07
I love reviews becuase it is real people talking about their experiences and I find them very helpful. Over the winter I put on a few pounds, especially in the hip and thigh area. I tried everything and got very frustrated. I started this tape and saw great results in only 2 weeks. My jeans started to hang on me and I felt great. It is easy to follow, not boring, and you have no annoying person trying to motivate you. Some of the reviews say Claudia looks awkward in some of the moves. I agree, but believe it is because she is tall, with long legs. I love the location and music. Try this one and I don't think you will be dissappointed.

Please, Please put these four Claudia Schiffer Perfectly exercise tapes on DVD. VCRs are outdated and if one goes out I am 100% certain that no one will buy another one. I agree with everyone. PLEASE put these on DVD. Surely you can do that!
DVD Please!!!!.......2006-04-24
I thik all 4 of her videos are amazing. The legs video is my favorite, because you see results within two weeks. I really would love to see them on DVD, they are the only reason I have a VCR still.
Please Please PLEASE release these all on DVD!! .......2006-04-16
I love these videos but it's a pain to hook up my VCR so I need them on DVD now. They're so great & effective, please put them on DVD already. I've been doing them for 9 years now and they are the best comprehensive home workout around. Judging by these Amazon reviews, I'm not the only frustrated Perfectly Fit-fan. So please put them on DVD ASAP and I will buy them all over again!!
The workout is good, Claudia isn't annoying, and the scenery is beautiful. The music is good and makes things go faster. The production of these videos rock and Kathy Kahler (sp) is quite the pro. No matter how many workouts I do, and gym classes I go to, I always come back to these.
Very Good For the Beginner.......2006-04-10
As a Pro Trainer, I always like to see programs for beginners - it is the population that needs the most help.
The exercises are basic with basic variations - & quite convenient, another good factor for beginners who may be time challenged.
Would like to see it in DVD if not yet available.

Feel the burn!.......2006-02-24
That's exactly what you'll feel when you do this tape! Your butt and legs will burn from these exercises! (In a good way of course)
I have been doing it for 2 months and I still find it extremely challenging. Some sets I cannot even finish.
I love all the videos in this series. It's the best workout you can get in only 30 minutes. The music is great, the scenery is great - you have no excuse to be lazy! Especially when your butt and tighs are nice and toned.

This is terrible........2006-06-05
Matthew Modine is a fantastic actor but lately it seems his fortunes have turned. He's rarely in anything decent and I guess his TV show "The Bedford Diaries" has been cancelled after 8 episodes. How low do you have to go to get cancelled from the WB?
Anyway, I was excited to find a film with Modine in the starring role that I had not seen.
This movie is terrible! I expected nothing and got it three-fold. I don't even know where to begin. The writing is bad and the characters just keep repeating their lines as though they can't believe the garbage they have to say. The plot is totally corny. I think the only reason I kept watching is because I don't recall ever seeing Modine so skeevy before and that was actually interesting.
But don't let that sway you.
Believe me, if I Could give this film negative stars, I totally would.
Ferrara one of the best American makers of foreign films.......2002-03-21
If you appreciate films by the likes of Antonioni, Lynch, Bunuel and Franju and you enjoy entering the inner worlds of characters then you'll probably find much to admire in this movie... it is unapolagetically dark, meandering, atmospheric, sometimes half baked, but ultimately haunting and utterly poignant. The DVD is bare bones with a decent transfer.
A deep dive into human loss and desperation.......2002-01-13
This movie is mainly about a guy who gets trapped into drug and alcohol abuse but manages to escape it. Somehow, as in real life, the your history will never be erased and he is trapped again in tragic circumstances with his new wife, pregnancy, memory loss from his 'wild days'. This film will not give much to viewer which has not experienced heavy drinking or drug use. For those which has bad experiences or any experience at all, will have a wake-up call and hopefully watch this film in awe. The film can be watched in the same session as 'Requiem for a dream', an uncredible film about drug abuse and the society that not only sells drugs 'illegally' but also a society in which one can get heavy drugs prescribed and legally.
ONE OF THE WORST MOVIES- MAYBE THE WORST!.......2001-12-03
I rented this film not expecting too much because it looked sleazy on the video cover. What an understatement! There is nudity throughout especially with the scenes with Dennis Hopper, but this is not the kind of nudity I find attractive in the least with women degrading themselves and most of the scenes seems out of place and unnecessary (trust me on this). Well, I have sat through many a "bad movie" on HBO late at night and found the movie satisfactory because of certain actors I enjoy
watching (Hopper comes to mind)or some type of interesting plot devices. Well, the actors are all shallow individuals and not worth the time to watch WITH THE EXCEPTION of Claudia Shiffer who is both beautiful AND a caring person (MY dream come true!), and what makes this picture deserving of LESS than 1 star is the character of Matthew Modine (the actor I like) who repeatedly fails to take control of his life EVEN WHEN HE HAS SOMEONE AS WONDERFUL AS CLAUDIA'S character helping him! (...). Anyway, this movie depressed me for days and left me feeling sad and empty- don't say you weren't warned!

Sarah Jessica Parker and Harry Connick Jr. star in this oddly sunny attempt at black comedy. (And yes, it stoops to Dick jokes.) Parker plays Colleen, a good girl with a bad boyfriend named Dick. This problem is solved when she kills him within the film's first few moments. The rest of the movie is filled with wackiness, some of which hits and some of which misses. The plot isn't a bad one, with bits of information cleverly revealed through flashbacks and at least one pretty good twist, and the terrific (and sadly underused) Teri Garr appears in a cameo that she could do standing on her head. Life Without Dick is best suited for Harry Connick Jr. fans, as he spends most of the movie being affably handsome, and the other characters repeatedly beg him to sing. This earnest little comedy probably won't ever find mass appeal, but its weirdness will doubtless find it a cult following somewhere. --Ali Davis

*****GROAN*****.......2006-06-04
Okay, granted this is probably one of Harry's first movies so we can excuse the fact that he simply cannot act in it.....BUT....what was Sarah Jessica Parker thinking of! She is the bright spot in this painfully dull movie and unfortunately she cannot carry the entire thing. I actually felt uncomfortable when Harry Connick Jr. attempted to say his lines. He was stiff and just plain bad. Even his gratuitous singing didn't fit in. And bear in mind that I LOVE Harry!! But this movie is a real groaner. Let's let it die a dignified death.....leave it on the shelf!
Hilarious.......2004-06-03
Fantastic movie. Sarah Jessica Parker is hot and histerical and with the likes of our Jackass star and the cheesy Harry Connick Jr., you really can't go wrong for this fun, popcorn flick.
TERRIBLE MOVIE!.......2003-12-02
DON'T SEE THIS MOVIE! What a waste of a good Saturday. The only reason I saw it was because I am related to one of the actors with a minor role. The plot is horrible and the actors act about as much as a beetle. The only good thing about this movie is that it was in focus.
HORRIBLE.......2003-03-31
I laugh at almost anything. This movie was supposed to be a comedy? The characters were annoying and it seemed like a kindergartner wrote it. Simple. There was not much too it. Do not buy or rent this movie for that matter. I couldn't stand to finish the movie. I shut it off before it ended...It was a failed attempt at comedy.
If you like "Sex In The City", then you'll love this..........2002-10-09
Ok, I admit it. I don't care much for "Sex In The City". Hey, I'm a guy, and it's not a guy show. But hey, if you're a fan of Sara Jessica Parker and her brand of humor, you will probably like "Life Without Dick".
Directed by Bix Skahill for Columbia Tristar pictures, this is a low-brow, romantic comedy starring Sara Jessica Parker and Harry Connick Jr. It runs aproximately 97 minutes on VHS.
The movie opens with Parker's character, Colleen, accidentally killing her boyfriend while attempting to scare him because she believed he was cheating on her. Unbeknownst to our heroine, her boyfriend was on a hit list of a local Irish Mafia kingpin, and the hitman is none other than Harry Connick Jr. Connick plays a would-be hitman who has a gift for singing and an inability to kill people. The plot then follows these two unlikely lovers as they find that Colleen actually is a better hitman than Connick.
Of course, in the end the bad guy gets caught, the odd couple really do fall in love, and life is grand.
Woven into all this unlikelyhood are ironic twists, dumb cops, and various parodies. Fairly typical for a movie of this type.
How would I rate this? I give it three stars, because you have to be a fan of the actors involved to even be interested in this movie. Not much intelligence is required to digest it, and it really is not that funny. It wanders, it meanders, it is hard to stay involved with, but then again, that's a Sara Jessica Parker trademark, isn't it? However, you gotta love Harry Connick Jr.'s voice.
My suggestion would be to rent a good Robin Williams movie instead.

Question.......2002-09-17
This Documentary was interesting, my question is
Does anyone have an update on these Models???
Will there be a Beautopia 2???
Behind the smiles.......2002-02-06
Many girls dream of becoming models, but perhaps if you showed them this video they would change their minds. The girls are young, most of them about 16. The four main characters are stunning, two are winners of modeling contests in foreign countries and sent to Manhattan to seek their fortunes. However, once in NYC they are lost in a sea of literally thousands of supermodel hopefuls. The suspence is in seeing whether or not they will claw their way up or if they will be sent back home poorer and disillusioned.
You watch them pretend to be big girls in the harsh Manhattan fashion world. At points they're crying, homesick, struggling through language barriers, and worrying about financial uncertainties. In the hopes of eventually getting paying work, they shell out hundreds each month on high rent and photographs to promote themselves. Everyday they pound the pavement interviewing with potential clients only to be rejected and insulted time and time again.
This documentary explores the dark depths of this shallow world and I recommend it to anyone who ever dreamed of being adored for being pretty.
Rocks the Face of the Modeling World.......2000-10-04
I have to say that I was skeptical of this movie and its topic. However, I found it an interesting sociological view of 20th century culture. It covers the modeling craze and many young girls' aspirations in different marketing enivronments and different worlds. Amazing!

Good Fun.......2007-01-19
Paget Brewster, (The Specials/Criminal Minds), hits all the notes. This DVD is a little INDIE that is pure Hollyweird. I wonder why it kinda got buried? The groove is good fun, and I know people who are as nuts as this cast! Christine Taylor (Dodgeball) is cute and the perfect friend. See this one ... SUPPORT THE INDIE!
Not Exactly Reckless + Wild.......2005-07-26
The title and the poster for this movie make it look like a teenage boy's dream come true. Actually, it's more of a movie for the ladies.
Christine Taylor plays Lili, from San Francisco, who comes to Los Angeles to visit her friend Frances, played by Paget Brewster. In case you are wondering who these two are, Taylor was also in Zoolander and Brewster was in Now You Know. Taylor is the more naive and straight-laced of the two; Brewster plays a Hollywood wanna-be starlet who hasn't advanced beyond extras on a film set. The occasion for their reunion is a wedding party, but Brewster (Frances) is so hapless that she has lost the address of the party. The movie follows them through an evening as they careen from party to party. Lili's real motivation for coming to L.A. is to meet a man that she encountered abroad, and thinks she is in love with. This movie is a comedy, though it's a little short on laughs. It seems to have sunk straight to DVD with hardly a trace, probably because it didn't define a target audience very well. It does manage to deliver some biting satire on the L.A./Hollywood "sophisticated" scene, but you probably have to be an insider to really appreciate it.
It's rated R, but it's a very mild R, probably due to language and references to drug use that went a little too far for PG-13. Don't watch this movie expecting nudity or violence.
Claudia Schiffer plays a singer/actress who keeps cropping up throughout the movie. Though her scenes are short, she manages to completely steal them from Taylor and Brewster. She has a much better presence in front of the camera, and it's not just about her looks.
The opening song, performed on-stage in a nightclub, was a great start to this film. I never heard it before, but it is a great start for a soundtrack.
The movie ends on an upbeat note--though it's a bit hard to say just when it ends, as you keep seeing additional short scenes as the final credits roll.
By the way, Claudia Schiffer was also in Zoolander.
The "bonus" features on this DVD are so skimpy, one has to wonder why they even bothered. I guess it's almost a prerequisite to putting out a DVD to say that it has "bonus features" nowadays.
If you are a fan of one of these 3 actresses, you would probably like the movie. Or if you want to watch a fairly harmless So. Cal romantic comedy, you might give it a try. Just don't expect a movie with a lot of skin, because that's not what it is about.
