If you were to argue that Mel Brooks's Young Frankenstein ranks among the top-ten funniest movies of all time, nobody could reasonably dispute the claim. Spoofing classic horror in the way that Brooks's previous film Blazing Saddles sent up classic Westerns, the movie is both a loving tribute and a raucous, irreverent parody of Universal's classic horror films Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Filming in glorious black and white, Brooks re-created the Frankenstein laboratory using the same equipment from the original Frankenstein (courtesy of designer Kenneth Strickfaden), and this loving attention to physical and stylistic detail creates a solid foundation for nonstop comedy. The story, of course, involves Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) and his effort to resume experiments in re-animation pioneered by his late father. (He's got some help, since dad left behind a book titled How I Did It.) Assisting him is the hapless hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman) and the buxom but none-too-bright maiden Inga (Teri Garr), and when Frankenstein succeeds in creating his monster (Peter Boyle), the stage is set for an outrageous revision of the Frankenstein legend. With comedy highlights too numerous to mention, Brooks guides his brilliant cast (also including Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, and Gene Hackman in a classic cameo role) through scene after scene of inspired hilarity. Indeed, Young Frankenstein is a charmed film, nothing less than a comedy classic, representing the finest work from everyone involved. Not one joke has lost its payoff, and none of the countless gags have lost their zany appeal. From a career that includes some of the best comedies ever made, this is the film for which Mel Brooks will be most fondly remembered. Befitting a classic, the Special Edition DVD includes audio commentary by Mel Brooks, a "making of" documentary, interviews with the cast, hilarious bloopers and outtakes, and the original theatrical trailers. No video library should be without a copy of Young Frankenstein. And just remember--that's Fronkensteen. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Mel Brooks' monstrously crazy tribute to Mary Shelley's classic pokes hilarious fun at just about every Frankenstein movie ever made. Summoned by a will to his late grandfather's castle in Transylvania, young Dr. Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) soon discovers the scientist's step-by-step manual explaining how to bring a corpse to life. Assisted by the hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman) and the curvaceous Ings (Teri Garr), he creates a monster (Peter Boyle) who only wants to be loved.

5 out of 5 stars you can laugh too much.......2007-06-11

Is this movie the product of a genius I don't know I'm not a genius but I did find it the funniest movie I ever saw.
Is this movie well made I don't know I don't make comedies but it is the funniest comedy I've seen in the last fifty years.
Does the story stick to the book yes. The book is rather simple in principle and without a lot of pedantry describes the power of a dream that comes true. Young Frankenstein takes not only the book Frankenstein and gives it some room to grow it gives vent to all those silly horror movies of the same names. Don't get me wrong please Young Frankenstein is silly but not stupid it comes from a lot of hard work I'm sure and the acting is the best I've ever seen like I say but the script they use does roll into the weeds from time to time.

The first time you see this one your sides hurt from all the timeless jokes scattered all the way through in what I'm sure the business calls perfect timing. I still don't know how they got the cast of stars to all fit on the same set to make this very funny movie but to this day after just seeing it again on TV I'm glad we have it around none the less as it is a classic even in it's own write and it's in black and white so you have to have been around long enough to have seen at least one of the early Horror movies we used to have to watch back in the good ol' days when every thing was in black and white and usually a horror on it's own don't you know.

The second time around you'll probably just laugh because it's a funny movie just that a very funny movie. Just the thing if you've seen everything before and perhaps need the last place you look for it to get you into the air.

This is a scary movie for kids though least I think so because the places the movie takes you can be a little foreign unless you've been to Transylvania and that's hardly likely for this audience but if you did come from there you never saw the places Young Frankenstein takes you I hope.

Frankenstein is a little over the top in this movie mostly from other old black and whites but almost believable in his complexity as a character I'm sure you'll admit.

His girlfriend has always been near the top of my most attractive women list and her acting is something you have to see for yourself to criticize .

There's a love interest in this one for Frankenstein and after a twist of fate more a thrust he gets the girl and the castle and the whole bowl of rice but with a lot of class that's rare and only found in this spoof of the Baron Von Frankenstein of many an imagination gone wild. She's played by Terry Garr the girl from Star Trek that ends up marrying the secret-agent from another planet with the cat that talked and the typewriter that doubled as secretary and the ... wasn't funny.

Egor the faithful servant of every Frankenstein we see on TV is played by Marty Feldman. A funny guy even in his own write Marty makes you laugh even when you're not looking and keeps the whole movie in the air all the time.

There's some cameos by most of the other funny men of the day and a whole lot of story for a comedy especially about such a difficult subject like Frankenstein so if you've got a book report to do you can always budget it as research because this movie made an awful lot of bigbucks and still does so there.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great comedy parodies ever!.......2007-05-22

Mel Brooks at his comedic best! A brilliant cast in a wonderfully funny movie.

5 out of 5 stars One of Gene Wilder's Finest.......2007-05-20

Young Frankenstein captures all the hilarious, and at times irreverant comedy that Mel Brooks is so well-known for. Done in the classic black and white, Young Frankenstein tells the story of the young Dr. Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) who strongly resents the work of his grandfather. Yet when he is summoned to the castle of his grandfather upon his death, he discovers that the twisted logic of his grandfather just might be plausible and resumes the work of his deceased grandfather. A hilarious comedy (with a few extra laughs if you understand German), this will easily become one of your very favorites. The finest of Gene Wilder and the best of Mel Brooks, Young Frankenstein is a must-have for any lover of classic comedy.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect Frankenstein.......2007-05-15

Is it necessary to comment on this film? The behind-the-scene interviews are great.

This simply irresistible first feature from the Muppets has Kermit the frog going from the swamps to Hollywood to be a star. As he travels and picks up his usual friends (Miss Piggy, Fozzie the Bear), Doc Hopper (Charles Durning) is in pursuit, looking for Kermit to be the spokesman for his frog-leg cuisine. A loose rendition of <I>The Wizard of Oz</I>, the film incorporates the same cagey humor as their breakout syndicated TV series <I>The Muppet Show</I>. This is one of the few times that a human cast (notably Steve Martin, Orson Welles, and Carol Kane) are integrated seamlessly with nonhumans. Worth noting is Paul Williams's score, which includes the Oscar-nominated "The Rainbow Connection." Williams's music, much like Howard Ashman's work on <I>The Little Mermaid</I> and other Disney films, provides more than atmosphere; there's a degree of magic here. Williams did not work on the future Muppet films until <I>A Muppet Christmas Carol</I>. His contributions made these films the best of the Muppet series. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

Jim Henson vaulted Kermit, the famous floppy-armed frog, and his Muppet pals to the big screen with this charming 1979 musical adventure. Like the TV show that inspired it, Henson and director James Frawley playfully acknowledge movie clichés and conventions and allow the characters to address the camera in asides, like a Hope and Crosby road film for the 1980s. The ambitious singing frog decides to leave his swamp and conquer Hollywood, gathering a group of friends along the way (Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and more) and bumping into oodles of guest stars making tongue-in-cheek cameos (my favorite is the tip-of-the-hat appearance by Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy). Meanwhile, despicable fast-food king Charles Durning pursues Kermit, hoping to make him the spokesfrog for his Frogs-Legs restaurant franchise. Austin Pendleton costars as Durning's sad sack henchman while guest stars include James Coburn, Dom DeLuise, Madeleine Kahn, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Carol Kane, Cloris Leachman, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, Elliot Gould, Orson Welles, and Big Bird. Paul Williams penned the bouncy, song-filled score. You'll believe a frog can sing! <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

4 out of 5 stars Brings back fond memories.......2007-02-12

Ah, something my children and I can watch together and not drive me insane.

This is the original muppet movie from 1979. I remember seeing it in the theater as a child. My kids like the singing, but get bored with the dialouge. But they are young (18 mo. & 32 mo.), so I am not suprised. I enjoy seeing all the big stars and comedians who took bit parts in this movie.

The only thing I don't like...most kids films with music/singing will have a bonus feature of the music scenes. It's a nice way to see the kids' favorite parts and only takes a few minutes if they want "just one more" show, song, story, etc. This DVD doesn't contain a music scene bonus feature.

Definately worth the money if you are a child from the 70s raising children today.

5 out of 5 stars First entire family enjoyable film........2006-07-17

The film which came out before I was even born! Is one that I enjoyed when I was growing up and also love to watch as an adult and will definitely share with my children one day! One day we'll find it, the rainbow connection that makes this film great for people of any age.

4 out of 5 stars DVD NOT "censored", but "The Muppets Go Hollywood" SHOULD'VE BEEN INCLUDED!.......2006-07-16

Let's clear up some confusion here....the "grasshopper" comment was on the movie soundtrack ONLY. It was NOT in the film. If you listen to the song "I hope that something better comes along" from the soundtrack recording, MOST of the dialog exchange between Rowlf and Kermit prior to the beginning of the song, is DIFFERENT than the movie (not just the "grasshopper" line). The different dialog on the soundtrack was to help make sense of the scene in which the song takes place, for those who hadn't seen the film.
I have an old VHS tape of The Muppet Movie from 1984, and the "grasshopper" line isn't on that either. Nothing was censored for the DVD.

I agree that the Muppets' 1979 TV special "The Muppets Go Hollywood" (which promoted the film's release), SHOULD have been included on this DVD. I'm deducting one star for that ridiculous omission.

5 out of 5 stars Best movie ever.......2006-04-24

This is only best movie ever made. I like all the Jim Hensons I've ever seen but those are nothing compared to this. I like the fact that Big Bird and Steve Martin were in this. It was funny, had oscar-winning rainbow connection and travels across the USA
A lot of people think Disney DVDs have few bonus features aren't very good ones. The only ones on here are Backstage Disney (which i dont watch) and pepe profiles. Pepe is so cool and I learned little known facts aboit kermit.

4 out of 5 stars Review of so-so 50th anniversary DVD of great movie.......2006-04-16

I would have given 3 and 1/2 stars if I could.

I have to agree with the reviewers disappointed with the DVD. The Muppet Movie is such a wonderful movie. Funny, smart, literate, warm...every reason to give it great packaging.

This new edition, unfortunately not only doesn't contain significant new material (Kermit featurette unsatisfying), it robs us of stuff on the previous release!

In the early DVD release, we got James Frawley's test footage. Also, we could choose to run the movie in French with captions in French. Although the words didn't match exactly, it was a great way to boost learning the language, particularly conversational French. In this edition, we have the spoken language only. I recognize that not a lot of people will be disappointed by this, but maybe some will.

The lost material is not enough to keep me from buying The Muppet Movie, but it is enough to make me scan e-bay for the earlier, superior edition.

This 1969 film has never lost its popularity or its unusual appeal as a star-driven Western that tinkers with the genre's conventions and comes up with something both terrifically entertaining and--typical of its period--a tad paranoid. Paul Newman plays the legendary outlaw Butch Cassidy as an eternal optimist and self-styled visionary, conjuring dreams of banks just ripe for the picking all over the world. Robert Redford is his more levelheaded partner, the sharpshooting Sundance Kid. The film, written by William Goldman (<I>The Princess Bride</I>) and directed by George Roy Hill (<I>The Sting</I>), basically begins as a freewheeling story about robbing trains but soon becomes a chase as a relentless posse--always seen at a great distance like some remote authority--forces Butch and Sundance into the hills and, finally, Bolivia. Weakened a little by feel-good inclinations (a scene involving bicycle tricks and the song "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" is sort of Hollywood flower power), the movie maintains an interesting tautness, and the chemistry between Redford and Newman is rare. (A factoid: Newman first offered the Sundance part to Jack Lemmon.) <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

Paul Newman and Robert Redford set the standard for the "buddy film" with this box office smash set in the Old West. The Sundance Kid (Redford) is the frontier's fastest gun. His sidekick, Butch Cassidy (Newman), is always dreaming up new ways to get rich fast. If only they could blow open a baggage car without also blowing up the money-filled safe inside... Or remember that Sundance can't swim before they escape a posse by leaping off a cliff into rushing rapids... Times are changing in the west and life is getting tougher. So Butch and Sundance pack their guns, don new duds, and, with Sundance's girlfriend (Katharine Ross), head down to Bolivia. Never mind that they don't speak Spanish - they'll manage somehow. A winner of four Academy Awards (including best screenplay and best song), here is a thoroughly enjoyable blend of fact and fancy done with true affection for a bygone era and featuring the two flashiest, friendliest funniest outlaws who ever called out "hands up!"

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful picture. It looks brand new........2007-06-21

I have loved this movie since I saw it at the drive-in when I was a kid. I watched it on t.v. over the years and felt sad as the film seemed to age.
The dvd was such a pleasant surprise, the picture was great/the colors were crisp. Even the sound seemed clearer and more brilliant. The interviews were so wonderful-I was so absorbed in all of the splendor.
As a kid, I decided that my favorite scene was the mountain scene (when Butch and Sundance are being chased by the law). I always laugh when Butch says, "The fall will probably kill you!" and then they both jump.
I am the author of-Dreams in August: Life, Love, and Cerebellar Ataxia

5 out of 5 stars The West at its Best.......2007-06-08

Among all Western movies, old or new, this ranks among the best.It is a classic:funny, sad and beautiful. And what beutiful phtographie of Utah landscape!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Western.......2007-05-31

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a modern western. It is more exciting and has more action than the typical slow western. Paul Newman and Robert Redford are an excellent duo. A great story with an even greater cast.

5 out of 5 stars Still a winner.......2007-05-16

The movie itself hasn't lost anything with age--still funny and sad and amazingly beautiful. The special features are outstanding; it's hard to imagine what the movie would have been with Steve McQueen as Butch and Paul Newman as Sundance, but that was the original casting. How it fizzled and why the studio fought so hard to find someone--anyone--in place of an unsuitable fill-in named Robert Redford are only a few of the inside stories packed on the features disc.

5 out of 5 stars Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.......2007-05-14

It's great to order from Amazon. I don't have to waste gas going all over town looking for a rare movie that most stores don't have in stock.
Thank you.

The Emmy-winning first season was an auspicious beginning. By its second season, the classic theme song "Love is All Around" has been revamped with an even more optimistic outlook: "You're gonna make it after all." In the sophomore season of this instant gold-standard sitcom, the ace writing staff and peerless ensemble begin to flesh out the iconic characters. Gruff Lou Grant (Ed Asner, enjoying his second Emmy-winning season) reveals his more loveable side when he discovers his son-in-law out with another woman in "The Six-and-a-Half-Year Itch." Vain Ted Baxter (Ted Knight) becomes a more sympathetic character in "Cover Boy," featuring the hilariously preening Jack Cassidy as Ted's competitive brother, and "And Now, Sitting in for Ted Baxter," in which a substitute anchor earns higher ratings than the vacationing Ted. Mary, the sweetheart of prime time, is still something of a pushover (in "Feeb," she feels compelled to write a letter of recommendation for an extraordinarily incompetent secretary), but she develops the backbone to stand up to an anti-Semite who disapproves of Rhoda in one of the season's best episodes, "Some of My Best Friends Are Rhoda." The indelible friendship between Mary and Rhoda (Valerie Harper, also earning her second consecutive Emmy) is sorely tested when they become temporary roommates in "Where There's Smoke, There's Rhoda." As with the most enduring shows, <I>The Mary Tyler Moore Show</I> eschewed topical humor that would date the series, and instead, mined its more universal and timeless humor from the wellspring of the characters. More than 30 years later, there is still, as ever, something about <I>Mary</I>. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

Description

Mary and the gang from WJM-TV return in another award-winning season. No longer the new girl in town, Mary has come to think of the newsroom staff as family. But along with the good times and close friendships come the often trying—and ultimately hilarious—situations every family faces. From Mary explaining the facts of life to Phyllis' daughter to going on a blind date (set up by Lou!) to attending her disastrous high school reunion, it's clear why this TV classic is one of the most beloved comedies of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Why can't sitcoms today be this good?.......2007-04-12

I can remember watching the Mary Tyler Moore show as a kid and I always enjoyed every episode. To now have the first four seasons on DVD means that I can pop in a DVD anytime and enjoy what is probably one of the best sitcoms every made.

Season Two finds the WJM newsroom staff developing their styles. Ted is still annoying (but Lou can't let him go no matter what) and Murray and Mary continue to develop their friendship. The episodes are always funny especially when Ted is forced to take a vacation only to find out his temporary "replacement" has WJM's ratings going sky high. Rhoda's mother plays a role in the season with her visits while another episode has Ted trying desperately to impress his brother by pretending to date Mary. Another episode has Ted interviewing a local City Councilman who is actually less intelligent that Ted!

You can't go wrong with the Mary Tyler Moore DVDs. They are family friendly, funny, well written and are an example of top notch sitcom writing that, for whatever reason, we just don't see anymore.

5 out of 5 stars MTM 2nd season.......2007-03-18

Like the first season DVD, I never get tired of seeing it. It's better than any sitcom currently running on TV.

5 out of 5 stars MTM.......2007-03-08

This show is a classic. It's funny and realistic. Great to see fashions from the 70's.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite sitcoms!.......2006-12-01

Although the show ran throughout the '70s, its appeal is still lasting today, in the story of Mary Richards and her eclectic co-workers in the WJM newsroom...

In the pilot, 30-year-old Mary has just moved to Minneapolis, eager to start a new life as a single careerwoman after her breakup with her fiance. She answers an ad seeking a secretary, and finds herself associate producer of the six o'clock news at WJM. There, she works for Lou Grant, a tough guy with a soft exterior and a ready bottle of booze, and alongside kindhearted news writer Murray and self-centered, idiotic reporter Ted Baxter.

On the home front, Mary decides to rent an apartment in the home of her college friend Phyllis Lindstrom...incurring the wrath of New York native Rhoda Morgenstern, who had her heart set on moving in. Despite their rocky start, the two opposite personalities quickly become best friends, creating the basis for much of the show's humor.

In Season 2, several episodes center around Bess, Phyllis' precocious adolescent daughter; Mary's dating hijinks; newsroom mishaps; and visits from Rhoda's stereotypically Jewish mother.

If you've never seen this show, I urge you to give it a try! You'll soon be looking for the rest of the seasons.

5 out of 5 stars Moore of the same, please!.......2006-11-05

In the golden years of Television - indeed in the golden years of Entertainment - quality was important. Performers on TV had honed their skills, during years of endeavour in halls and theatres across the country, perfecting their work. Musicians - of all forms of music - played proper instruments with virtuoso ability. Lyrics could be understood and the musical sound replicated - because it was written down and 'scored'. Actors, musicians, dancers, etc., all had 'great ability'.

Even in this milieu, some performers stood out as exceptional. When thoroughly competent TV directors and skilled television technicians were able to work with these outstanding performers, shows of exceptional quality and were produced.

Mary Tyler Moore had an ability and an aura about her that was rare. The 'situation comedy', a long cherished and much loved TV art-form, seemed to have been made for her and her many skills. Moore's first great TV success was in the Dick Van Dyke Show. Then, when she starred in her own shows, Moore was magnificent.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show was produced and directd by consumate experts. Add to this a particularly high standing of casting, which ensured only the best supporting actors, and the Mary Tyler Moore Show was destined to be in the 'Top Flight' of its gendre.

Importantly however, unlike the crass and peurile content of so much 'entertainment' today, the Mary Tyler Moore Show ( and other great shows of the era) contained no gratuitous violence, no explicit sex or nudity, and no foul or blasphemous language. The show was humourous without being coarse and was, truly, a delight to watch.

Like Easy Rider, Bonnie and Clyde, The Wild Bunch, and The Graduate, The Last Picture Show is one of the signature films of the "New Hollywood" that emerged in the late 1960s and early '70s. Based on the novel by Larry McMurtry and lovingly directed by Peter Bogdanovich (who cowrote the script with McMurtry), this 1971 drama has been interpreted as an affectionate tribute to classic Hollywood filmmaking and the great directors (such as John Ford) that Bogdanovich so deeply admired. It's also a eulogy for lost innocence and small-town life, so accurately rendered that critic Roger Ebert called it "the best film of 1951," referring to the movie's one-year time frame, its black-and-white cinematography (by Robert Surtees), and its sparse but evocative visual style. The story is set in the tiny, dying town of Anarene, Texas, where the main-street movie house is about to close for good, and where a pair of high-school football players are coming of age and struggling to define their uncertain futures. There's little to do in Anarene, and while Sonny (Timothy Bottoms) engages in a passionless fling with his football coach's wife (Cloris Leachman), his best friend Duane (Jeff Bridges) enlists for service in the Korean War. Both boys fall for a manipulative high-school beauty (Cybill Shepherd) who's well aware of her sexual allure. But it's not so much what happens in The Last Picture show as how it happens--and how Bogdanovich and his excellent cast so effectively capture the melancholy mood of a ghost town in the making. As Hank Williams sings on the film's evocative soundtrack, The Last Picture Show looks, feels, and sounds like a sad but unforgettably precious moment out of time. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The death of innocence in 1950's Texas.......2007-05-21

The Last Picture Show is a film adaptation by Peter Bogdanovich of Larry McMurtry's novel of the same name. The two-hour film follows Texas high school seniors as they graduate and move on to military service, college, or get stuck in the soon-to-be ghost town of Anarene. Anarene is an actual ghost town in Texas, but the movie was filmed 8 miles to the north, in McMurtry's hometown of Archer City, which was fictionalized as Thalia in his 1966 novel. The setting is evocative of many American small towns in the dust bowl during the Korean War. In fact, Bogdanovich chose the name Anarene for his film version to pay homage to Howard Hawks' 1948 Red River, set in Abilene, Kansas.

You can taste the dust and desolation as you view The Last Picture Show. Two high school seniors (Jeff Bridges and Timothy Bottoms) lust after the teenage temptress (Cybill Shepherd) and get advice from the old-time owner of the town's movie theater. The young generation of Anarene residents is confused about their future and jockeying for position in the social strata, while the older generation feels the desperation of life in a dying one-horse town. Reportedly, Orson Wells recommended that the movie be shot in black & white, and I can't imagine it any other way. As a younger viewer, I was surprised by the amount of full-frontal nudity and sexual scenarios in a film nominated for eight Academy Awards. It gives me hope to know that American cinema wasn't always as prudish as it has been in the recent past.

4 out of 5 stars Well made film but................ .......2007-05-20

Although this film is top notch in most respects it left me too sad and depressed to want to give it the full five star rating. The filmmakers certainly do an excellent job of portraying small town North Texas ( the Wichita Falls area is just below Oklahoma) life from the adults who obsess about the teenagers' football playing abilities to the petty cruelties and intrigues spawned by wind swept boredom. The actors are all well cast and bring their characters to life though I'll admit I was a little confused at first as to the family connections or lack there of for Duane, Billy, Sonny and Sam the Lion. It amazes me that when the film was released in 1971 it was portraying events that had happened only nineteen years previously (in 1952) since it seemed at the time it debuted it was all ready considered a movie about long gone days. One note it definitely does deserve the R rating.

5 out of 5 stars Do your self a favour - Check this out.......2007-05-08

Having just seen this film for the first time what can I say, I'm totally
totally blown away. I won't bother going into any details as the reviews below heap more than enough superlatives on this little beauty. The pity is that in Australia this film is unknown, certainly no one I know has heard of it, and I only became curious when I saw it featured on a Doco of 70's movies. One of those rare movies where all the elements of the film making craft stand out brilliantly. Sure don't make 'em like they used to.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies of All Time.......2007-03-11

When "The Last Picture Show" was first released, it was hailed as one of the best debut films by an American director since "Citizen Kane." Odd, since "Citizen Kane" is #1 on The American Film Institute's Top 100 list and "The Last Picture Show" is nowhere to be found. Since it is in the 400 nominees for the 10th anniversary edition of that list, maybe it will make it this time. It certainly deserves to. The film is based on a novel by Oscar winner Larry McMurtry (Best Adapted Screenplay, 'Brokeback Mountain') and is written by McMurtry and director Peter Bogdanovich. The movie takes place in a small, desolate Texas town where the only thing to do is go to school, play sports, and see a movie. No one knows this better than Sonny (Timothy Bottoms) and his friends. Sonny is a typical high school senior. He hangs out with his friends, usually Duane (Jeff Bridges), chills with his girlfriend, and worries about his future. Especially since almost no one in the town has much of a future. Bogdanovich hammers this message down, mostly with the black & white cinematography. Despite having a crush on Duane's slutty girlfriend Jacy (Cybill Shepherd), Sonny begins having an affair with his football coach's wife Ruth (Cloris Leachman, who deservedly won an Oscar her role). Probably the most memorable character in the film is Sam the Lion (Ben Johnson, who also won an Oscar for his role) the man who owns the movie theatre, the diner, and pool hall frequented by almost everyone in the town. Sam also, for the most part, acts as the moral conscience of the town. The character is given some of the best dialogue. The performances in this film are all so good. You can not imagine one other person playing the roles in the film. One thing I kept noticing while watching the film is how hot Cybill Shepherd was back in the day. "The Last Picture Show" is a masterpiece of cinema that deserves a lot more props for how good it is. It's regarded as a classic, but isn't a solidified one. The movie does everything so well to illustrate its story and the desperation of all the characters to get away. From the black & white atmosphere to the dull-ness of everything. Not a single scene in the film seems forced or un-needed (although it could be argued the film has gratuitous nudity, but who cares?). If you haven't seen "The Last Picture Show" you should, because it's a great film and it's very memorable, you won't regret watching it.

GRADE: A

5 out of 5 stars A classic piece of Americana .......2007-02-06

Directed by Peter Bogdanovich this is a true piece of Americana and what filmmaking is about. "The Last Picture Show" is truly a classic.

It stars Cybill Shepherd, Ben Johnson, Jeff Bridges and Cloris Leachmen. All of them would have tv and movie careers some more successful than others. Bridges plays Dwayne a country boy/ football player in a small country town. His best friend is Sonny, played by Timothy Bottoms, who is also a country boy/ football player. They're not really good football players (like the NFL players) and they get told that they're not good by their peers and friends in their small town.

Sonny's girlfriend Charlene resembles the easy, yet hard to figure out Anglo Saxon girl. He eventually breaks up with her to be with anolder woman. This older woman is actually the wife of his coach, but since his coach hardly gives her the time of day, she seeks a good younger man who can satisfy her.

Cybill Shephered playes Dwayne's girlfriend, J.C., a rich, insecure and often shallow white girl. She at first comes on as sweet as innocent, but that sweetness rapidly disappears when she goes to a nude swimming party with Lester a loser of a man played by Randy Quaid.

J.C. is just like her mom, bitchy in tone, gets mixed up with men that don't love them, and then complain later on why they're lives are messed up. This is a classic movie, in showing people in a small town sometimes act. However, most of the characters especially Sonny show heart and soul, along with Dwayne as they grow threw the tough times growing up, that would shape them up to be strong respectable men.

Dwayne joins the army to fight in Korea, and Sonny overcoming many obstacles begins to change for the better.

This movie is the classic coming of age story but really resembles so much more too, the 1950-1960's were a turning point in how Americans see themselves. The performances are all outstanding including Cybill Shepherd, Jeff Bridges, Cloris Leachmen and Timothy Bottoms. The DVD is packed with many special features and is well worth buying to see more information about this classic film.

Inspired by "Gulliver's Travels," the fantasy-adventure <I>Castle in the Sky</I> (1986) was Hayao Miyazaki's third feature, and helped to establish his reputation as a visionary in both Japan and America. The orphan Sheeta inherited a mysterious crystal that links her to the legendary sky-kingdom of Laputa. With the help of resourceful Pazu and a rollicking band of sky pirates, she makes her way to the ruins of the once-great civilization. Sheeta and Pazu must outwit the evil Muska, who plans to use Laputa's science to make himself ruler of the world. <I>Castle</I> echoes elements in Myazaki's earlier <I>Nausicaä</I>, and anticipates imagery in his later films, from <I>My Neighbor Totoro</I> to <I>Spirited Away</I>. Disney's new English dub, which features Anna Paquin (Sheeta), James Van Der Beek (Pazu), and Cloris Leachman (pirate matriarch Dola), is lively and close in tone to the original Japanese, if a bit talkier. The exciting flying sequences, appealing characters, and fantastic vision of a steam-powered future Jules Verne might have imagined make <I>Castle in the Sky</I> a must-have for fans of Japanese and Western animation. (Unrated: suitable for ages 10 and older: violence) <I>--Charles Solomon</I>

Description

The magic touch of master animator Hayao Miyazaki is visible from start to finish in CASTLE IN THE SKY -- an imaginative tale full of mystery and adventure. The high-flying journey begins when Pazu, a mining apprentice, finds a young girl wearing a glowing pendant and floating down from the sky. Together, they discover both are searching for the legendary floating castle, Laputa, and vow to unravel the mystery of the luminous crystal around her neck. Their quest won't be easy, however. There are air pirates, secret agents, and astounding obstacles to keep them from the truth -- and from each other. With spectacular animation, a fabulous musical score, and the voice talents of Anna Paquin (Sheeta), James Van Der Beek (Pazu), and Cloris Leachman (Dola), CASTLE IN THE SKY is an animated masterpiece you'll never forget!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies... that some kids won't understand.......2007-04-30

I actually wouldnt recommend Castle in the Sky or Nausicaa for kids. when i say kids... i mean below 10 years old. They're too complicated and, i dont personally, but some parents might find the content a tad too violent. I wouldnt see any problem with 10 or 12 year olds seeing them as they could understand most of the concepts. I dont think these movies weren't really made for kids though. aside from Totoro, most of miyazaki's movies are made to appeal to either a certain group (Kiki was a message to the young women of japan), or to teenagers and young adults not because of violence, but because of concepts. Spirited away is an excaption to this in that it appeals to all ages young and old. If you want anime for children, some of that fake american made anime like Avitar: the last airbender or the french made Code Lyoko is a better choice. America hasn't really quite gotten the concept of making cartoon-style shows that appeal widely to adults and teenagers... so most of them are safe.

5 out of 5 stars One of Miyazaki's best!.......2007-04-05

Pazu is a young boy who works in the mines of his town. One day he's going about his business as usual, when he sees a light above the large mine and runs to see what it is. To his surprise, it's a girl his age, with a crystalline pendant hanging around her neck!

This is the beginning of Castle in the Sky, an wonderful adventure with just the right amount of adventure and comedy. Pazu soon realizes that the girl, whose name is Sheeta, is being chased by a sort of FBI--bowler-hatted government agents who will stop at nothing to capture her. He finds himself on a rousing adventure, which culminates in the beautiful Castle in the Sky.

(A side note: I can't help but compliment Mark Hamill of Star Wars fame on his great voice acting here. He does a wonderful job on the head secret agent Muska, giving him a tone of very real madness. Great!)

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2007-03-05

If you want to have an exciting time just as you see the films like James Bond movies, or Indie Jones series Miyazaki animation film as this one is just for you. Miyazaki often uses similar settings, ploys used in previous works and Castle In The Sky is no exception.

PAZU AND SHEETA
Pazu and Sheeta are the pairs exactly like his 1978 TV animation series Future Boy Conan. Pazu became less superhuman than Conan who has incredible power. Sheeta, however, is almost the same as Lana. It is bacause the basic movie plot was originally prepared for the sequel of Conan.

ECOLOGICALLY MOTIVATED
Most of the animation works he was deeply involved are themed with human and nature. Takahata's Heidi series in 1974 sets viewers closer to simple life in alps full of nature. Future Boy Conan in 1978 promotes ecologically friendly ideal community Highharbor. Naussica of The Valley of The Wind finds the heroine who stands between the antagonistic nature and human world. Castle tries to conclude that civilization who forgets firm soil withers away.

BOND FILM LIKE ACTION
That's what the movie is all about. Miyazaki's animation is vivid with action and each action seem so real we are enchanted instantly.

LAPUTA SO DISTANT
Contrary to our expectation the stay in Laputa floating kingdom is so short and I wish I could see the castle a bit longer.

SUPERGRANNY DOLA
Miyazaki films have lots of impressive old women characters such as Yubaba in Spirited Away and Dola in this film. Her street-smart yet with warm-hearted character gives the film the depth.

Verdict: Typical Miyazaki film enjoyable to wide audience.
Rating: 90 out of 100
Recommended for: Wide range of moviegoers.

5 out of 5 stars The old good vs. evil in a new exciting setting.......2006-10-09

This review is based on the Disney version of the movie, voiced by James Van Der Beek, Anna Paquin, Cloris Leachman, Mark Hamill and others. The basic premise is extremely simple - it's the old good vs. evil, science vs. nature scenario, but the animation and imagination is so cool that it looks much more complicated than that.

In case you were wondering, this is not based on the book "Castle in the Air" by Diana Wynne Jones. "Castle in the Air" is the sequel to "Howl's Moving Castle", which was also done in anime by the master Miyazaki. "Castle in the Sky" has roots in the story of "Gulliver's Travels" where Swift wrote about a flying city named Laputa, upon which this film is based.

Sheeta is a young girl, now an orphan, who was given an amulet by her mother before she died. It seems that lots of people are after the amulet, and after Sheeta is taken aboard an airship by creepy Government agents, the ship is attacked by a family of pirates. During the fracas, Sheeta falls from the airship, and it becomes apparent that the amulet is much more than a nice piece of bling-bling. She is rescued by a young boy named Pazu, who is also an orphan and works as an assistant to a mining engineer.

Both the pirates and the army are going all-out to get their greedy hands on Sheeta, and we learn that she is a vital link to finding the mythical floating city of Laputa, which is said to be packed with both treasure and advanced technology, securely hidden within a huge storm cloud.

The main characters, other than Sheeta and the heroic Pazu are Colonel Muska, a secret agent with huge ambition, Dola, domineering matriarch of the Pirate clan, and the General, leader of the armed forces.

Although more than two hours long, this action-packed family movie is never boring, but it does contain some amount of violence.

4 out of 5 stars THE SHEETA IS FALLING! THE SHEETA IS FALLING!.......2006-10-06

Pazu, a young boy, is looking for something to take his mind off the drudgery of working in a mine all day. He has to work because he's an orphan and he has to take care of himself. Then one day, inexplicably, he sees a pretty girl his own age floating slowly down from the sky with a glowing pendant around her neck. The girl's name is Sheeta and she had fallen out of a airship trying to get away not only from sky pirates, but also the government agents that had kidnapped her from her home. Both parties want the power behind the strange pendant and are willing to put Sheeta's life at risk to get it. Sheeta's only friend and ally is you spirited Pazu, whose dream of finding the mythical sky island of Laputa has an odd link to Sheeta's lineage.

Castle in the Sky is a beautiful piece of work that belies the fact that it was made 20 years ago. I really held both Pazu and Sheeta close to me because of the fact that these two kids have somehow managed to survive and even have positive outlooks on life without the benefit of having parents or family. You have to admire the strength of both of them, however farfetched it is in reality. Luckily, they do finally find the family relationships they never had with each other. I could very easily see the two getting married and living happily ever after when they get a little older. The thing that impressed me the most with Miyazaki's work on this film was that he was never afraid to use comedy. It was nice to have a laugh when the director's message became too weighty or the action got ahead of the story. Characterization was great. Animation was great. The story was the only part that seemed a little average. Still a great movie.

This gentle reworking of Ted Hughes's 1968 novella was the unseen gem of 1999. Hogarth, a young boy who lives in the Maine woods during the cold war, befriends a giant robot. As with E.T., the iron giant is a misunderstood outsider who becomes a child's best friend, and Hogarth does his best to hide the massive figure from his mom (voiced by Jennifer Aniston) and the local scrap-yard beatnik (Harry Connick Jr.). Soon the suspicions of neighbors and a government agent (Christopher McDonald) spell trouble. <P> With no songs, no sidekicks, and no cheap ending, <I>The Iron Giant is a refreshing change-- like an off-Broadway production compared to the glitz of Disney's annual animated extravaganzas. Director Brad Bird may have <I>Family Dog and <I>The Simpsons to his credit, but this film doesn't have that brand of scatological humor. As with the best family entertainments, there are gags that adults will howl at while the kids are watching something else (see Bird's interpretation of cold war propaganda). And the star is one cool piece of animated magic. Voiced by Vin Diesel (<I>Saving Private Ryan's hulking Private Caparzo) and filled with more gadgets than a Swiss army knife, the giant is a grand thing to behold. And like another famous cinema tin man, our hero--and the movie--has heart. Superb entertainment for ages 5 and up. <I>--Doug Thomas

Description

A young boy rescues a huge robot which has rocketed to earth from space - and tries to protect the genial giant from a nosey government agent and the military. A captivating animated feature that's part metal, part magic and all heart.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Animated Film With Several Important Themes.......2007-06-16

This is a wonderful film that can be enjoyed by both adults and children. Though exciting in places the movie is never really scary since it soon becomes apparent that the giant is a friendly, helpful creation that needs to be protected by Hogarth not feared. The 1950's setting is well realized from the Cold War fears to the kids' obsession with superhero comic books. Several important themes are examined including the value of non-violence, the eternity of the soul and tolerance for beings that seem different. Some of these themes are presented subtly and others not so subtly. Despite the sometimes serious ideas presented there are many scenes that are "laugh out loud" funny.
The movie is welled voiced with Harry Connick Jr. perfect as Dean the beatnik/artist/scrap dealer and Jennifer Aniston as Hogarth's attractive mother. Hogarth is fully developed as a smart kid missing his dad, and enduring resentment from his less intelligent peers. The movie is adapted from Ted Hughes' children's novella of the same name and though both are well rendered they are vastly different from each other. As some other Amazon reviewers have noted this film is correctly rated PG not G for some mild cursing, intense moments and some humor involving a practical joke with a laxative.

5 out of 5 stars Good Movie - Still.......2007-06-14

It's been a while since I watched this movie with my son - who is now 24. When I watched it with my two young God children (6 and 3), they had the same reaction he did. They did not from the tv.

This is a good movie - not violent, no profanity, just good and clean.

I wish they would make a sequel!

4 out of 5 stars Fine for watching with older friends.......2007-06-04

I watched this flick three days ago after receiving the DVD.

I have to say that, compared to the silly pictures and cheapquels Disney was churning out during the same time period (except for the excellent Fantasia 2000), this is really good. It does not have talking animals, or stupid songs sung by the main characters, so it's safe to invite friends in their 30's or 40's to watch it.

It's true that it does have some violence, but it's not of the bloody kind, and most children won't be disturbed by it.

However, now that our minds are so used to eye-popping full-3D animation, and to much more action-packed animated movies, some might find this movie kinda slow and underwhelming. This was my case.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie- needs more advertising!.......2007-04-28

great movie! I don't know why it wasn't in the theaters. we just happened to run across a VHS several years ago and watched it for lack of something better. We found it was better than most! It's a fantastic story, with a hero's ending. A must see for adults as well as children. We're on our 2nd DVD (and we started with a VHS, this movie gets watched a lot!)

5 out of 5 stars "Suupperrrrmmaaaaaaaaaaaan!!!".......2007-04-18

I just LOVE this movie. It is my favorite animated movie and although a few good ones have come along since then, I can't see anything else ever topping this one. I owned it many years before my son was born. I had seen it on cable, fell in love with it and bought the DVD hoping that one day I would share it with my kids if I ever had any. My four year old son and I watch it together and he loves it as much as I do. I cried the first few times I watched it and dozens and dozens of viewings later, it still chokes me up. It's a good wholesome movie with a lot of heart.

In this third season, Mary Richards (Mary Tyler Moore), she of the "bright smile and infectious vivacity," got to display some of that celebrated "spunk" of hers. In the season-opener, "The Good-Time News," she demands to be paid the same amount of money as her predecessor. In "The Georgette Story," she defies her boss, Lou Grant (Ed Asner), and vainglorious anchorperson Ted Baxter (Ted Knight) by counseling Ted's new girlfriend, whom he takes for granted. And in "Romeo and Mary," she finally stands up to an overzealous suitor (guest star Stuart Margolin), which hilariously backfires on her.

<I>The Mary Tyler Moore Show</I> endures because its timeless comedy is drawn from the wellspring of its fully drawn characters, who were allowed to grow beyond one-note caricatures. Mary's best friend, Rhoda (Valerie Harper), who was in danger of becoming this series' Sally Rogers, really blossomed this season. In "Rhoda the Beautiful," the slimmed-down Rhoda is empowered to enter a beauty contest, and in "My Brother's Keeper," she catches the eye of Phyllis' (Cloris Leachman in an Emmy-nominated performance) brother, which devastates Phyllis, setting the stage for yet another disastrous Mary Richards party (and a dénouement that must have been daring in 1973). Wise-cracking Murray (Gavin McLeod) reveals new depths in "Murray Faces Life," in which he sinks into depression after hearing that a former college classmate has won the Pulitzer Prize. Even Ted manages to surprise. In "Operation: Lou," a hospitalized Lou Grant finds a new appreciation for Ted, who graciously and uncharacteristically, presents him with an expensive bottle of scotch. Moore, Harper, and Knight were each honored with Emmys this season. Joining this august core ensemble is Georgia Engel as Georgette, who makes a delightful first impression in "Rhoda Morgenstern: Minneapolis to New York." Even hard-boiled Lou softens in her presence. "You're a real cutie, you know that?" he tells her in "The Georgette Story." Despite Lou's insistence to the contrary in "The Good-Time News," <I>The Mary Tyler Moore</I>'s job was to make people laugh. But it could also be surprisingly moving, as in the laugh-free dramatic climax of "Remembrance of Things Past," in which Mary is reunited with an ex-boyfriend (Joseph Campanella), who has broken her heart in the past. This three-disc set contains no extras, but any of these episodes can take a nothing day and suddenly... well, you know the rest. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

Description

TURN THAT DIAL TO WJM-TV FOR A THIRD SEASON OF LAUGHTER! In its third season, this groundbreaking comedy explored topics previously taboo on network television. Deftly woven in with the hilarity of the busy newsroom and repeated outrageous attempts by Mary's friends to set her up with Mr. Right came episodes dealing with divorce, meddling parents, self-esteem, and the inevitable mid-life crisis when one fears that life has somehow passed them by. But this classic comedy pulled off these subjects with humor, style and wit, reminding viewers why they identified with—and loved—the WJM-TV gang so much.

or to at least give up the rights to Nickelodeon or some company with competent marketing staff who'll give proper treatment to this classic television sitcom.

It says more about the quality of Fox marketing staff than about Mary Tyler Moore that the first four seasons apparently were not big sellers. They did not effectively promote them (from the poorly designed covers to the almost total lack of extras). The MTM show is considered one of the top TV comedies of all time and has the number one ranked episode of all time in a TV Guide poll ("Chuckles Bites the Dust") in Season 6.

The MTM show is so enmeshed in culture that the theme song is in use in two commercials right now and the cast got a standing ovation at last year's Emmy Awards. But the Fox marketing "experts" dump the nearly bare bones first four seasons onto DVD with no promotion and then apparently kill the last three seasons because of "poor sales."

The quality of the actual video is very decent at least. The first four seasons are well worth buying here on Amazon. But people have been expecting some participation from Ms. Moore and other cast members, I think. There are also obviously people out there who will also wait and buy the whole set when it's released collectively.

Consider writing the editors of DVD review sites (there are many) and urge a petition to get Fox to relent and release the last three seasons or at least give up the rights to Nickelodeon or someone who knows how to do DVD correctly. Show some respect, Fox!

3 out of 5 stars Mary Tyler Moore Show Season 4.......2007-03-09

This season was not as enjoyable as the previous two or the fourth season, but still a nice addition to the collection.

5 out of 5 stars I'LL TAKE RHODA ANY WAY I CAN GET HER!!!!!!!.......2007-02-26

I have to admit that I bought the MaryTylerMoore show because I simply adore Valerie Harper as Rhoda! She absolutely stole every scene she was in and was the perfect gal pal for Mary. I'm so glad I started with purchasing season 3, considering MaryTylerMooore looked so much better with her hair cut shorter, the storylines were alot funnier, and Rhoda was finally set free from the dowdy plain jane look to a sensational chic beauty of the 1970's!!!

The MaryTylerMoore show set the standard of a truly great sitcom, which included a great cast (Loved Phyliss, Murray, and Georgette!), solid writing, and Rhoda!!! I just loved her colorful apartment, fashion style, and quick wit!!! I hope the executives in charge of dvd releases at Fox wise up and release the remaining seasons of the MTM show and bring out Rhoda!!! I wonder if Twentieth Century Fox realizes there are web sites selling bootleg copies of the complete series of Rhoda, MTM, and many other shows? Probably not, but I'll just wait in vain for the shows to become available on the open market, considering it's the safest way to purchase directly from retailers and Amazon!!!

The multi-Emmy-winning fourth season of <I>The Mary Tyler Moore Show</I> showed us the sassy side of Betty White and the softer side of Ed Asner's Lou Grant. Cast against type, White makes a memorable first impression in the season-opener as steely "Happy Homemaker" Sue Ann Nivens, who makes Martha Stewart look like June Cleaver. The episode "The Lars Affair" earned an Emmy for Cloris Leachman, and it is arguably her finest half-hour, as the ill-equipped Phyllis tries to domesticate herself after her husband has an affair with Sue Ann. Consider the bee, a dejected Phyllis tells Mary and Rhoda (Valerie Harper). "Once the male bee has... serviced the queen, the male dies. All in all, not a bad system." Sue Ann's debut is but one of this superb season's historic moments. The other is when "Ted Baxter Meets Walter Cronkite." "The big question," Murray (Gavin McLeod) asks, "is where do I sit to get the best view?" The event even exceeds the anticipation. "Let's talk shop," Ted (Ted Knight) tells the speechless Cronkite. "What words do you have trouble pronouncing?" The character who goes through the biggest changes this season is Lou. In the Emmy-winning episode, "The Lou and Edie Story," Lou is heartbroken when his wife moves out, leading to one of the season's funniest episodes, "Lou's First Date," in which an unwitting Mary sets Lou up with an 80-year-old woman to bring to an awards ceremony. Lou's difficulty handling displays of affection is put to the supreme test in "Happy Birthday, Lou!" in which Mary ill advisedly decides to throw him a surprise party.

Speaking of disastrous parties, the classic episode, "The Dinner Party" (the one with the Veal Prince Orloff) firmly establishes one of the series' best running jokes: Mary's disastrous track record as a hostess. That's Henry Winkler as an extra, unexpected guest forced to sit at his own table. Moore was honored this season with an Emmy for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy. No doubt her Emmy reel included "Best of Enemies" (co-written by Albert Brooks collaborator Monica Johnson), in which Rhoda's tactless revelation of one of Mary's secrets threatens their friendship, and "Two Wrongs Don't Make a Writer," in which Mary and Ted take the same creative writing class and Ted plagiarizes her story. Mary may be a bust as a hostess, but season 4, this classic series' best to date, is a real party. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

5 out of 5 stars A Real Gem.......2007-05-16

My boyfriend introduced me to this show and I can't thank him enough. I never knew that sitcoms could be this good! Before I had only heard of Mary and Rhoda as a joke on Romy and Michelle. I've seen all four released seasons now and it has become my favorite sitcom of all time.

Mary has to be one of the most endearing characters in television history. And the supporting cast is amazing. Valerie Harper, Cloris Leachman, and Betty White being my personal standout favorites. Not one episode of this series disappointed me. I only wish that more people would discover this treasure. Then perhaps the remaining seasons would be released.

5 out of 5 stars Please release the remaining three seasons!.......2007-05-13

It'sso frustrating. This is one of the great shows of all time and all we have are the first four seasons. This show ended 30 years ago! What is taking so long to get these released?..same with The Bob Newhart Show and Taxi..which ran five seasons and only three have been released.

When the production studios start putting out complete seasons of their shows, shouldn't they follow through with ALL of them? There are a lot of fans of MTM who would dearly love to have the entire series on DVD,extras or not..and yet to come(if it ever does)is the classic "Chuckles Bites the Dust"

Please...release the final three seasons!

5 out of 5 stars Asking Oprah for help to release the remaining seasons.......2007-05-11

I know this may seem like a strange thing to do, but I contacted the Oprah Winfrey show by e-mail and told them that there are fans like us here on Amazon who are really upset that FOX has stalled release of the remaining seasons.

Oprah is a HUGE fan of the Mary Tyler Show and has said on previous shows how much of an inspiration the show and Mary was to her when she started off in the News business in the seventies.

I thought if we let Oprah know what was happening with FOX and this delay that maybe she could do something to help the frustrated fans out there. Perhaps have a "Mary Appreciation" show and fill the audience with fans of the show, maybe bring Mary and the rest of the cast on, have them reminisce about the show and use that show as an opportunity to implore FOX to stop being ridiculous and release the remaining episodes, maybe even sign a petition by audience members and send it to FOX.

It might all sound crazy, but I love this show, and we the fans deserve to have the remaining seasons released!!!! I'm sure Mary Tyler Moore herself would be frustrated if she knew how much her fans were behind the show.

I have a question for FOX. How does a show with 29 Emmy wins not get a full series release on DVD???!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I miss Mary!.......2007-05-07

I don't think television has ever been as fun as it was when this show graced the airwaves. In my opinion, it was at it's best when they featured more of Betty White as Sue Ann Nivens, which came after the fourth season, but you still have the wonderful ensemble cast and the great scripts.

5 out of 5 stars WHERE ARE THE REST?!.......2007-04-13

I have all 5 series too and have waited and waited, only to read the disappointment. I've actually written NickatNite to see if THEY can buy the rights (they would probably do a better job) and release it themselves from FOX, but I know nothing about how those things work and never got an email back. Obviously, if MTM had 7 seasons, then there are still fans like us out there...maybe if they didn't wait so long to release the rest, then some ppl. wouldn't forget about ordering the other seasons. MTMshow also has a site if fans want to check it out.

Amazon.com essential video

This obligatory girls' version of <I>Stand by Me</I> begins with actors Melanie Griffith, Rita Wilson, Demi Moore, and Rosie O'Donnell doing a lousy job of playing adult versions of the film's youthful protagonists. The idea is that this quartet of characters is having a reunion, which serves as a preface to the main story about school chums who make a pact to stay close and supportive through thick and thin. The trouble is that Griffith, Moore, Wilson, and O'Donnell look like they've rehearsed their scenes for no more than a few minutes, and after boring us silly there's little reason to get excited about anything else. Still, it's nice to have a supporting cast that includes Janeane Garofalo and Bonnie Hunt, while among the girls are three young actresses who have been burning up the road in recent years: Christina Ricci (<I>The Opposite of Sex</I>), Thora Birch (<I>A Clear and Present Danger</I>), and Gaby Hoffmann (<I>Strike</I>). <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars Now and Then.......2007-05-17

Although it is something of a chic flick, "Now and Then" is a great movie. I would watch having a youngster see it as there are some adult topics discussed. Each child character and her adult counter part, look so similar that it is amazing! It is a very well told narrative of young ladies coming to terms with growing up and all that it involves and holding onto friendship in spite of it all.
