The movie that put the Break into Spring, <I>Where the Boys Are</I> inspired thousands of college kids to seek sun, surf, and even s-e-x on the beaches of Florida. A bevy of co-eds (including foxy Yvette Mimieux and delightful Paula Prentiss, in her film debut) make for Fort Lauderdale, finding fun but also quite a bit of heavy-breathing drama. It's a little like a dressier, glossed-up version of the Problems with Today's Youth movies that were filling up the drive-ins of the era. The movie's actually pretty frank for 1960, although these days the lightweight stuff with Prentiss and Jim Hutton holds up best. There's also Connie Francis, who plays one of the college girls and croons the great title tune (which belongs on anybody's mix tape of classic teen-beach music). The film was remade, with vague Orwellian overtones, as <I>Where the Boys Are 84</I>, a truly dismal effort. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Description

A group of Midwest girls head down to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for spring break.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie.......2007-06-11

I've watched this movie so many times on TCM. I was glad to finally get a print. The extras alone (Commentary by Paula Prentiss, Connie Francis and Paula Prentiss in "Where the Boys Were: A Retrospective" and Fort Lauderdale premiere newreel) make the purchase price well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Paradise Remembered.......2007-05-17

Great, fun, movie with some usual (for the time) acting flaws. What a pleasure to see the "old" Ft. Lauderdale, when it was still a beautiful place to go and not miles of high-rise condos. Connie Francis is a gem and Frank Gorshin is the original "Jazz Nerd". When this movie first came out, I was 12, and had a huge crush on Dolores Hart. It's good to see George Hamilton before he "knew toasted". Towards the end, the budget must have been a little tight. When "Melanie" leaves the cheap motel and walks out on the highway (US 1?), the same 3 or 4 cars keep going by in both directions, most noticeably a 59 (60?) green Plymouth which is the car that finally hits her.

5 out of 5 stars Love Love Love This Movie.......2007-05-12

I have always loved this movie and bought it after telling my two teenage daughters about it. They could not believe that teenagers in 1960 acted pretty much the way they do (minor exception - I do not think girls today are so marriage-minded as they were then) now. I have not watched the movie in years and it was fun to see all the scenes that I had forgot about. Great Movie!!

4 out of 5 stars Beach Parties..........2007-03-19

A fun movie although it has a dark side to it which today may seem pretty tame to some. All the cast were good and Connie Francis is just great.

5 out of 5 stars Where the Boys Are - movie.......2007-03-08

This is one of my two top favorite movies of all time. It was still a time of innocence in movies when things were alluded to rather than shown. Kids go away for Spring vacation to Ft. Lauderdale and kick up their heels. Back then kicking up their heels consisted of drinking a lot and that was pretty much all. It's a great movie and I highly recommend it. Connie Francis was introduced in this movie and she sings the title song in her most beautiful velvet voice.

<I>The Adventures of Spin and Marty</I> premiered on <I>The Mickey Mouse Club</I> in 1955 and scored an instant hit. Like many of Disney's most successful creations, <I>Spin and Marty</I> was a simple story. Rich, coddled Martin Markham (David Stollery) arrives at the Triple R in his grandmother's limousine and dismisses the dude ranch for boys as "a dirty old farm." His comment angers everyone, especially Spin Evans (Tim Considine), the most popular boy on the ranch. Over the course of the summer, Marty learns to relax and make friends; he and Spin become best buddies. Humor and wisdom are dispensed by wrangler Ollie (Leonard P. Greer), "Well I'll be a blue-nosed gopher!"; Marty's fussy butler, Perkins (J. Pat O'Malley); avuncular foreman Bill Burnett (Harry Carey, Jr.); and George (Sammee Tong), the Chinese cook, who regales the boys with Western songs in Cantonese. The characters proved so popular Disney brought them back in <I>The Further Adventures of Spin and Marty</I> (1957) and <I>The New Adventures of Spin and Marty</I> (1957).

For Baby Boomers, <I>Spin and Marty</I> packs the kind of nostalgic wallop the "Andy Hardy" movies and <I>The Wizard of Oz</I> had for earlier generations. During the '50s, millions of kids dreamed of spending the summer at the Triple R. In <I>More Tales of the City</I>, Armistead Maupin suggests that whether you identify with Spin or Marty constitutes a key division in American society, comparable to who your favorite Beatle was. In the extras, a dismayingly old Considine and Stollery revisit the ranch in Newhall, CA, where the series was filmed. This set is a sure-fire gift choice for aging Boomers. (Unrated, suitable for all ages: minor violence) <I>--Charles Solomon</I>

Description

"Yipp-i, yipp-a, yippi-o!" THE ADVENTURES OF SPIN AND MARTY was an overwhelmingly popular series within THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB. Featured here is the entire first season (1955) about freckle-faced Spin and wealthy city kid Marty at the Triple R Ranch summer camp. Adding to the fun are exclusive interviews with the original cast members and a special tour of the original filming site. And, presented for the first time ever, is Tim Considine's screen test for the role of Marty -- the character he persuaded the producers not to cast him in. So saddle up and enjoy all the stories -- the ones you know and the ones you don't.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic nostalgia.......2007-05-13

I havent seen Spin & Marty since it first aired on TV in Australia back in the late 50's-60's and was over the moon to find this on DVD. As a young girl crazy about horses I wished I was able to go to that ranch to ride the horses, and so each afternoon after school I would get lost in the adventures that Spin & Marty had. Only now after watching it as an adult do you realise that there was underlying messages such as teamwork, co-operation, and importantly, tolerance of others.
The reproduction is quite good considering it is 50 years old.
I highly recommend any fan of the early Mickey Mouse Club series to have this in their collection and I can only hope they release the other two series.

This is a great Walt Disney collection. It brings back childhood memories of why I hurried home from school every afternoon.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous memories.......2007-03-17

This was my favorite show when I was a kid, and I'm happy to say that it stands up well. I watched it with my sister and my kids, and we all enjoyed it very much, even the kids who had never heard of it before.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2007-01-27

If you grew up with the Mickey Mouse Club this is a great DVD to own.

5 out of 5 stars More!!.......2007-01-24

This was a joy to watch. I watched Spin & Marty on the MMC when it re-ran in the 70s, and as usual, the set contains extra footage and some interesting interviews. I hope they release another series of this show!

Kevin Bacon stars in this quickie sports film that's really more a culture-clash comedy. He plays an assistant coach at the college-basketball level who's looking for that big, big recruiting score and finds it in a distant African village. But his quarry, a seven-footer (Charles Gitona Maina) he spots in an anthropology film, turns out to be the prince of his tribe who's in line for the crown and has no interest in becoming fodder for Sports Center. So it's up to the callous American to convince him that he wants to give this all up to live in a dorm and chase coeds (while, of course, honoring his ancestors). Unfortunately, the jokes are stale and the basketball footage is nothing to get excited about. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

Except for the presence of Kevin Bacon, whom I like a lot, this would have been a real loser. There were so many things wrong. Directed by Paul Glaser with no surprises, no depth of character, a too heavy-handed Hollywood scenario. You knew what was coming a mile away. There was good cinematography and music, and Kevin Bacon is always appealing, but that's the best I can say. Oh, and the nun. She was pretty good too. The lead black man was also engaging; the problem was really the script. Too pat, and too many unbelievable things that screamed "Hollywood". Like when the village burned down. They were ready to just up and leave where they'd lived for generations. As if it takes generations to rebuild their houses. And there were no signs of the burned buildings during the basketball game. And Bacon was supposed to climb this incredible mountain, get cut in the groin, then play basketball, all on a rotten knee. Please.

This has got to be one of the best movies I have watched in a long time! At some point in time, you have to get tired of all the synthetic and predictable stuff that hollywood spews and this movie is the break that hollywood needs ! The setting is spectacular, done in Kenya and I personally fell in love with Kenyan cheerleading; the maasai dances, the passion and energy of the people are all so refreshingly different ! I would recommend this to anyone who wants to watch a fantastic movie !

How did they do that? The most heart warming story about basketball ever. Did the actor really score or was it a basketball player that did a great job of acting? I guess we'll never know. Worth the price for the DVD. A must for your collection.

Anybody seen Keanu? The action star of Speed opted out of this overbearing sequel, which finds costar Sandra Bullock in love with another guy (Jason Patric) and in trouble aboard a cruise ship under the control of a mad extortionist (Willem Dafoe). Speed director Jan de Bont is back at the helm for part 2, but even he seems to have forgotten that what made the first film work was the simplicity of its hook (the bomb, the bus that can't drive below 50 mph, the handful of sympathetic passengers, etc.). Speed 2 is all about hugeness: big ship, lots of places to get into trouble, and so on. Even with an eye-popping, endless finale of the vessel crashing into port (and causing mondo destruction), there is nothing about this movie that is remotely as involving as its predecessor. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Oh no!.......2007-04-19

With a little more thought invested in the screenplay, 1997's "Speed 2" could have been another jewel in the crown of the series, instead of a death blow to the franchise. Keanu Reevves bowed out of this installment, so Officer Traven, Bullock's first boyfriend, is replaced by Alex Shaw (Jason Patric of "Rush" and "Sleepers"). Bullock's Annie thinks Alex is completely different than Traven, but finds out via an early crash course with Tim Conway (as her driving instructor) that Alex is also a cop on LAPD's "Suicide Squad." (She almost runs him over.)

To make up with one another, the two sign up for a cruise. Unfortunately Geiger (Willem Dafoe), a computer genius with a grudge, is on board, with plans of taking over the ship and crashing it into an oil tanker unless one of the passengers is able to define irony. Out of everyone here, it looks like Dafoe put the most effort into developing his character, like he's warming up to be Green Goblin.

Geiger has all sorts of resources at his disposal, like a bath of leaches to suck the copper poisoning from his veins, a remote controller for the ship's controls, and a nifty set of gadget golf-clubs. At one point he seems like he's even able to control the ship's crew with a "these aren't the droids you're looking for" Jedi (Sith?) mind trick. Maybe the filmmakers were just trying to show that he had planned so well that he knew exactly what they were going to command before they voiced it. This could've been a little clearer.

The only defense anyone seems to have are Annie and Alex, with Alex doing most of the fighting and Annie assisting and providing a few laughs.

The first hour of the film really held my interest for all the weird peripheral stuff going on: Bullock watching "Lolita" followed by a scene of a young deaf girl wearing pink glasses who keeps flirting with Jason Patric because he said "hello" to her in sign language. Later Patric has to rescue her from drowning in an elevator shaft. Reggae covers of popular songs pop up at eerie times, having little to do with the plot of the film. (This film, anyway.)

The second hour loses all focus and literally had me feeling seasick. Geiger is dispatched in the explosive fashion you'd expect given the budget and nature of the film, and all reasons for his commandeering the vessel disintegrate with him. Too bad, because he seemed to have a legitimate concern for the safety of future ship workers, and it would've been nice if the filmmakers had made Geiger less of a villain caricature, and more of a misguided soul who wanted to use the boat's destruction as a symbol to shake people out of apathy into action. Instead, Geiger's Syriana-ish demise is overshadowed by a finale of the ship crashing into a crowded pier with tourists dodging the craft in an awful slapstick montage that would've been more at home in "Airplane!" And I'm left sitting on my couch staring at the TV, mysteriously craving a Big Gulp.

3 out of 5 stars Stuck In Neutral.......2007-01-31

Hollywood does seem to be the one place where they don't believe in the law of diminished returns, given how many sequels to first-rate blockbusters keep coming at us year after year after year. SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL is a case in point.

The original SPEED, released in 1994, was that rarest of jewels in Hollywood--an action blockbuster of considerable suspense, involving a bomb-laden bus that will blow up if its speed should fall under 50 miles per hour at any given point. Made for a relatively inexpensive $30 million, it grossed something on the order of $150 million and actually won Oscars for sound effects and film editing. But with all that success, did it necessarily warrant a sequel?

This time around, the disaster-prone Annie (Sandra Bullock) and her new fiancé Alex (Jason Patric), like her last boyfriend an LAPD officer with a penchant for dare-deviltry, are on a Caribbean cruise aboard the Seabourne Legend, when the ship gets sabotaged by a deranged ex-employee (Willem Dafoe). What ensues is considerable mayhem of the 'PG-13' variety, courtesy of original SPEED director Jan De Bont and screenwriters Randall McCormack and Jeff Nathanson. But apart from Bullock (who is as appealing here the second time), Patric, and Christine Firkins as a deaf girl whom Patric saves in an elevator shaft in the bowels of the ship, SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL is generally a film stuck in neutral, what I tend to call a curiously frustrating flick. It's not nearly as bad as its many detractors say, but it also isn't nearly up to the standards of the original either. Dafoe, who was so tremendous in PLATOON and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER, does something of a Dennis Hopper rerun as the villain with a grudge, but he's even more over the top than Hopper was in the first film, and that's supposed to be hard to accomplish.

The other problem SPEED 2 has is in its basic notion that a large ocean liner can go as fast as this one does, and that it could create a great deal of damage when it slams into a marina as it does here. It's all good and fun, but it's not believable; and some of the acting and the dialogue are unintentionally funny at times too: not very promising, to say the least. One of the film's better moments, prior to Dafoe starting his mayhem, is a sequence of Bullock in her ship's cabin watching Stanley Kubrick's 1962 classic LOLITA on video--a sly reference not only to Kubrick, but to the fact that Firkins' deaf girl character has more than a few Lolita characteristics about her.

The end result is a would-be $170 million blockbuster that just seems to sit there a lot of the time--a fairly routine Hollywood piece where the action is delivered, but the payoff is only so-so.

2 out of 5 stars not so speedy.......2006-10-22

Really, the reason Speed 2: Cruise Control isn't a classic like the first one is because the speed storyline is not a bus, but a BOAT this time around. Do you really think a boat can go as fast as a bus? Even if a boat is fast, do you think that's more exciting than a bus avoiding danger in the city streets? I don't. What kind of amazing dangers can a boat avoid? OTHER boats? Ocean buoys?

A bus with a bomb underneath it is more rewarding to watch. Speed 2 feels more like a way to cash in on the original. I watched the movie twice and wasn't satisfied either time. It's an okay movie, though. But don't expect "speed".

5 out of 5 stars Action & Comedy on the High Seas.......2006-08-08

"Welcome to paradise. And the name's Dante!"

So begins Sandra Bullock and Jason Patric's harrowing adventure about the Seaborne Legend. The beautiful ship, friendly passengers, and attentive crew would ordinarily make a splendid cruise. Unfortunately, among the passengers is a madman who is bent on ruining everyone's vacation.

Though it would appear this film is not universally well-loved, it is actually one of my favorite action moves. I enjoyed the main setting: a cruise ship. The passengers are very funny. Among them are a couple who are selling a new diet regimen called Fat Busters, where "fat is your friend" (so the body won't try to hoard fat, making weight loss difficult). Their fellow shipmates, surrounded by the cruise ship's banquet-like meal, heartily agree. And the deaf girl who signs is wonderful.

The villain is entertaining. (Admittedly, the story behind his motivation to destroy the ship may be rather contrived.)

The action moves from the ocean-liner, to speedboat, to personal water-craft, to a propeller aircraft, then finally to a tower high atop an oil tanker. (If you've ever wondered what it would look like to see an oil tanker blow up, your curiosity will be satisfied by what happens next.)

In all, this movie is a little like a trip to an amusement park. There is lots of action in this movie, and no small amount of comedy.

    4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Wonderful.......2005-12-26

Clip shows tend to bore me, but this one is creatively edited from years of Christmas Specials. These mostly color vignettes are a delight for those who remember the performers as well as younger folks who may not have been around.

True variety abounds with song, including a German children's choir that sings in English more perfect than one hears from many American choirs, and delightful comedy bits. This collection is a charmer.

The brief 47 minutes flys along with not a dull moment. Included is a clip from Bing Crosby's original movie rendition of "White Christmas" disolved into a live performance. Rich Little gives a classic remembrance of George Burns, Jack Benny and Ed Sullivan himself. (Sullivan, who visually projected as very tall, was in fact not tall and we briefly see that as he stands alongside Little.)

Connie Frances, who knew how to take the time to "sell" a song, is featured in a show Sullivan took to Cuba to entertain our troops. Ventriloquists, Sheri Lews and Senor Wences are there as well as a couple of classic Muppet performances and Alvin and the Chipmonks. Lots of notstalgia and chock full of legends: Count Basie, Mahalia Jackson, Johnny Mathis, The Supremes. Each vignette is brief but satisfying with a perfect flow from one piece to another.

A genuine time capsule, delighful and uplifting. Nicely done. I'm so impressed, I'm ordering multiple copies to give as stocking stuffers next year.

3 out of 5 stars OK, Not Great.......2005-10-15

Best features: Quality of the clips is mostly good to excellent; same with the audio. It was good to see Bing Crosby singing portions of White Christmas. No lingering watermarks in the corner of the screen. Unexpected, delightful surprise: The Cowsills...this family could SING. Fun clip: Alvin and the Chipmonks.

Worst features: It's not an hour long, it's only 46 minutes. The scene menu is hard to figure out. Too many of the clips are just segments, not the entire act. Comedy acts?...boring and outdated. Joan Rivers singing. Rich Little doing imitations of people long dead (was it really necessary to include an impersonator??).

Bottom line: It's inexpensive, but on the boring side. It will definitely not be on my annual viewing list.

5 out of 5 stars CONNIE FRANCIS, QUEEN OF SONGS........2002-01-16

There will never be a singer like Connie Francis, not in this lifetime. Connie has made it through the difficult times, and yet still comes back on top. She has a voice of gold. Ms. Francis you are an inspiration to all of these young singers of today. They do not have the guts; nor the determination to beat all odds regardless of what difficulties that may lie ahead. Sal Ferrara,

5 out of 5 stars Connie Francis will always be at the top of my list!.......1999-06-16

How can anyone not admire this lady? Through thick and thin, she battled through and it shows in her performance, in her music, in her voice, in her stage presence. To Connie Francis: "Hundreds of thousands of people love you (myself included) and wish they could see more of you".
