A big-budget summer epic with money to burn and a scale worthy of its golden Hollywood predecessors, Ridley Scott's <I>Gladiator</I> is a rousing, grisly, action-packed epic that takes moviemaking back to the Roman Empire via computer-generated visual effects. While not as fluid as the computer work done for, say, <I>Titanic</I>, it's an impressive achievement that will leave you marveling at the glory that was Rome, when you're not marveling at the glory that is Russell Crowe. Starring as the heroic general Maximus, Crowe firmly cements his star status both in terms of screen presence and acting chops, carrying the film on his decidedly non-computer-generated shoulders as he goes from brave general to wounded fugitive to stoic slave to gladiator hero. <I>Gladiator</I>'s plot is a whirlwind of faux-Shakespearean machinations of death, betrayal, power plays, and secret identities (with lots of faux-Shakespearean dialogue ladled on to keep the proceedings appropriately "classical"), but it's all briskly shot, edited, and paced with a contemporary sensibility. Even the action scenes, somewhat muted but graphic in terms of implied violence and liberal bloodletting, are shot with a veracity that brings to mind--believe it or not--<I>Saving Private Ryan</I>, even if everyone is wearing a toga. As Crowe's nemesis, the evil emperor Commodus, Joaquin Phoenix chews scenery with authority, whether he's damning Maximus's popularity with the Roman mobs or lusting after his sister Lucilla (beautiful but distant Connie Nielsen); Oliver Reed, in his last role, hits the perfect notes of camp and <I>gravitas</I> as the slave owner who rescues Maximus from death and turns him into a coliseum star. Director Scott's visual flair is abundantly in evidence, with breathtaking shots and beautiful (albeit digital) landscapes, but it's Crowe's star power that will keep you in thrall--he's a true gladiator, worthy of his legendary status. Hail the conquering hero! <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

A Roman Epic.......2007-06-20
This is a superb film from the opening battle scenes right through to the end. As it was directed by Ridley Scott this shouldn't surprise you, since he is one of the most consistent directors around.
Russell Crowe takes the leading role of Maximus, a Roman General who is betrayed by the son of the Emperor and he gives a commanding performance. The authority he gives off as a Roman General is spell-binding (not to mention his impressive physical condition) and if anything I would have given best Oscar for this role rather than A Beautiful Mind. In fact its a stellar cast all round with Richard Harris, Oliver Reed, Derek Jacobi and David Hemmings all playing good supporting roles. Joaquin Phoenix plays Commodus, the treacherous son of Marcus Aurelius and Connie Neilson his sister.
The cinematography and cutting is excellent, and although this was made 7 or 8 years ago now, the CGI efects still look good to this day. There are some brilliant scenes inside the Colloseum, noteably where the Tigers are released during a Gladiator fight, and during the scene involving the chariots.
Although the film is nearly 2 and 1/2 hours long, you'll never be looking at your watch during this. This is what cinema and film (and I include DVDs in this as well) were meant for. There is no basis of fact behind the story, but in the end who cares this is just great entertainment.

A Gladiator Review.......2007-05-17
Amazingly, interestingly, and surprisingly, the movie Gladiator received 5 Academy Awards because of its rich quality and Russell Crowe's perfect, pleasing, polished, prized performance. The movie Gladiator is a Ridley Scott film which is a Dreamworks and Universal production, and stars Russell Crowe as Maximus: the general who became a slave, who became a gladiator. Although Gladiator is rated R for intense, graphic combat, it is an excellent movie lasting a highly refreshing two hours and thirty-five minutes, and is a movie that most teenagers are permitted to watch along with their parents.
The movie Gladiator is about the Roman army's general by the name of Maximus who becomes a slave, and then is made a gladiator. When Rome's Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, begins to grow old and weak, he decides to crown Maximus as Emperor before he dies, because he had realized that his only son, Commodus, was unfit to become the next Emperor of Rome. Unfortunatly, Commodus was informed of his father's astute decision. Commodus brutally murdered his father. He became Rome's Emperor. Maximus fled for his life. Tragically, Commodus tried to have Maximus secretly slaughtered by his men in the wilderness. Escaping the Emperor and his men's wrath, Maximus hurries to his home to try and save his family before they can be killed. Across the rural terrain, Maximus rides his horse, treads the path on foot, and rests on the rocky ground until he reaches the outskirts of Rome.
Maximus faced his worst nightmare. Arriving at his home out in the wilderness, Maximus finds that he came too late, since the Emperor's men showed up before he did and they killed his wife and son, who were not warned of their fate. Hopelessly, Maximus trudged away from his beloved home and the life he used to have because there was nothing left for him there. While Maximus buried his beloved family near his homestead, he was slowly lossing his strength and losing the will to live. Along the edge of the road, he plodded on until he collapsed on the ground, unconscious. He laid there, motionless. Maximus was soon spotted by an ignominous slave caravan, was captured by the slave caravan, and was displayed for sale as a slave when he awoke. After a man came along seeking to purchase some slaves to become gladiators, Maximus was immediately and wisely chosen as one of the men. Maximus' life becomes a nightmare.
Since Maximus had plenty of experience in battle, because he was an army general, he fought surprisingly well in the arena. Defeating every opponent in the arena as easily as if he were swatting a fly, Maximus was prolific as a gladiator, and so he gained a wide reputation. Because of Maximus' great reputation, Commodus, (who is) now Emperor of Rome, not knowing that the great well-known gladiator is Maximus, decides one day to watch him fight. Angrily, Emperor Commodus realizes that Maximus had evaded the wrath of his men, that Maximus had survived all these years, and that Maximus was standing in front of him at that moment as the idolized and famous warrior himself. Commodus plots an evil scheme. Maximus is challenged to fight the Emperor for his freedom, and when they fight, the outcome is utterly shocking.
After reviewing the movie Gladiator, Jonathan Foreman of the New York Post stated, "Russell Crowe is simply magnificent!" Personally, I love the movie! Viewing, reviewing, and critiquing Gladiator, Andrew Johnston, who works for US Weekly, rates the movie as "****" because he, too, thinks that Gladiator is a wonderful movie.

Wes Anderson's follow-up to the quirky <I>Bottle Rocket</I> is a wonderfully unorthodox coming-of-age story that ranks with <I>Harold and Maude</I> and <I>The Graduate</I> in the pantheon of timeless cult classics. Jason Schwartzman (son of Talia Shire and nephew of Francis Coppola) stars as Max Fischer, a 15-year-old attending the prestigious Rushmore Academy on scholarship, where he's failing all of his classes but is the superstar of the school's extracurricular activities (head of the drama club, the beekeeper club, the fencing club...). Possessing boundless confidence and chutzpah, as well as an aura of authority he seems to have been born with, Max finds two unlikely soulmates in his permutations at Rushmore: industrial magnate and Rushmore alumnus Herman Blume (Bill Murray) and first-grade teacher Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams). His alliance with Blume and crush on Miss Cross, however, are thrown out of kilter by his expulsion from Rushmore, and a budding romance between the two adults that threatens Max's own designs on the lovely schoolteacher.
Never stooping to sentimentality or schmaltz, Anderson and cowriter Owen Wilson have fashioned a wickedly intelligent and wildly funny tale of young adulthood that hits all the right notes in its mix of melancholy and optimism. As played by Schwartzman, Max is both immediately endearing and ferociously irritating: smarter than all the adults around him, with little sense of his shortcomings, he's an unstoppable dynamo who commands grudging respect despite his outlandish projects (including a school play about Vietnam). Murray, as the tycoon who determinedly wages war with Max for the affections of Miss Cross, is a revelation of middle-aged resignation. Disgusted with his family, his life, and himself, he's turned around by both Max's antagonism and Miss Cross's love. Williams is equally affecting as the teacher who still carries a torch for her dead husband, and the superb supporting cast also includes Seymour Cassel as Max's barber father, Brian Cox as the frustrated headmaster of Rushmore, and a hilarious Mason Gamble as Max's young charge. Put this one on your shelf of modern masterpieces. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>
Description
RUSHMORE is the story of a gifted, rebellious teenager named Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a 10th grader at elite Rushmore Academy. Editor of the school newspaper, captain or president of innumerable clubs and societies, Max is also one of the worst students in the school, and the threat of expulsion hangs permanently over his head. Max's world is rocked when he falls for elegant 1st grade teacher Miss Cross (Olivia Williams) and he plans to erect an aquarium in her honor -- then finds himself competing for her affections with his friend, steel tycoon Mr. Blume (Bill Murray), the wealthy father of two of his classmates.
Customer Reviews:
One of the most original and entertaining comedies of the '90s..........2007-05-23
Since making his directing debut with the 1996 cult caper film "Bottle Rocket," Wes Anderson has established himself as one of film's most exciting young directors. His second film, "Rushmore," is a witty, heartfelt and often amusing film that features a hilarious performance by Bill Murray.
Anderson wrote the quirky script with his right-hand man, actor Owen Wilson, with whom he also collaborated on "Bottle Rocket" and "The Royal Tenenbaums." The story follows the trials and travails of high school student Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a sharp kid who focuses his attention on a plethora of offbeat extracurricular pursuits (fencing club, Latin, playwriting) rather than his studies.
In between attending to his various activities at Rushmore (the name of the private school he attends), Max develops a crush on Miss Cross (Olivia Williams), an elementary school teacher at his school. He also befriends Herman Blume (Bill Murray), an eccentric millionaire whose two sons attend school with Max.
Things soon fall apart for Max: The school expels him, Miss Cross denies his flirtations, and Blume begins courting Miss Cross himself. That sets up an extremely funny tete-a-tete between Max and Blume, highlighted by the scene in which Blume runs over Max's bike with his car.
As the intriguing love triangle of Max, Blume and Miss Cross plays out, Max finds solace in his caring father and a female student at his new school. The ending, which features all the characters coming together to watch Max's newest play, is entirely satisfying without being hokey or cynical.
Schwartzman, the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola ("The Godfather"), exhibits a great knack for comedy throughout "Rushmore." But Murray steals the show with a masterfully funny turn that scored him a Golden Globe Nomination and Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor. In one unforgettable scene, Herman suggests that his sons invite Max to their birthday party. "There's gonna be girls there," replies one. "Yeah," adds the other, "Get your head out of your a--." Murray's initial deadpan reaction will have you howling; his subsequent reach into the back seat to pummel his son will have you rolling on the floor.
Anderson, who captured the Independent Spirit Award for Best Director, exhibits a sense of craft that's rare for comedic directors. Rather than depend solely on physical gags or even amusing one-liners, Anderson uses set direction, art direction and music to enhance his vision. Even if your sense of humor doesn't jive with Anderson's, you'll walk away from "Rushmore" with an appreciation for his careful attention to detail.
You either love it or hate it........2007-05-12
You have to love the little moments because this movie is made of little moments. I watched this before I knew it was a comedy and when I found out it was I figured they just couldn't think of anywhere else to put it. This movie makes me feel like there are lots of things moving and changing that have nothing to do with me. A lot of people say they don't like the movie because they think Max is a prick. You're supposed to feel that way, I think. You're supposed to forgive him for that because he's got something special in him, or at least that in his case he knows about it. But it also seems like some people don't like the movie because it's different. I guess that if you're patient and you like the little things, you'll enjoy this movie. Also, if you feel like you're left out or sort of an outcast you might enjoy this movie. You know, the kind of person that doesn't have red or hammer as the first thing they think of when you ask them for a tool and a color.
Not really my cup of tea....*Spoilers*.......2007-03-20
2.5 stars. I'm not really sure how I feel about this movie. I truely didn't contect to Max. I, too, found him to be a pompous spoiled brat and often times bordered on the creepy side in his pursuit of Mrs. Cross. And I'm not sure where his air of entitlement came from. For a boy with such humble orgins, his character seems totally out of whack. Bill Murray surely has his middle-aged blues shtick down (Lost in translation/Broken Flowers). he, too, was not a character I could root for. I understand he was not happy with the direction of his life, but the whole affair thing just seems so typical...and I'm not sure if he and Mrs. Cross were going to pick up things where they left off or not. Max never does pick up his grades or cut back on the extracurriculum activies--so I'm not sure about his character arch. He's pretty much the same boy at the end of the film as he was in the begining. Oh, except, he does admit his father is a barber now. Overall, check it out at your own peril.
Great flick for nerds.......2007-03-11
OK...my title is a little mean, but I found this kid, whom we're supposed to "just love" a little mean and the fact that I lost sympathy for him early on (due to his meanness) kept me from rooting for him. This is defintely a film in which we are supposed to root for the hero (or the anti-hero)...the adorable short nerdy kid with a big nose and glasses. His mother died of cancer, his father is a poor-but-good hearted barber,
he got into this fancy prep school on a scholarship, he is so smart that he solved a math problem that stumped MIT profs in a matter of minutes, etc. And the school bully picks on him.
Well he isn't really that nice, himself. He's insufferably rude to the Chinese girl, destroys Blume's marriage without a second thought, disables Blume's car which could have killed him. But he's still "adorable nerdy Max" so we're supposed to overlook these quirks and love him. I found his egotism much more annoying than cute.
I suspect that guys who felt like nerds in middle school might like this film due to some sort of wish fulfillment but beware, he doesn't end up with the pretty school teacher in the end! Maybe if another, more naturally likable actor had starred I'd have more interest in him..(Leonardo DiCaprio captured our sympathy as a young kid, in spite of committing huge crimes in Catch Me if You Can and I think that a lot of that was due to DiCaprio's natural sweetness) Jason Shwartzman (whom I actually liked a lot in Marie Antoinette) just didn't grab my heart the way the script obviously intended. Only once, when he smiled in the end did he seem a little sympathetic. For most of the film he sails through his antics with a vague superior smirk on an opaque, masklike face. There's no light there except an evil glint in his eyes when he's seeking revenge.
He looks like a cross between Woody Allan and Groucho Marx (were those his real eyebrows?.) Maybe if you find those guys endearing, you'll love Max. Otherwise... well, I warned you.
On the plus side, Bill Murray was genuinely touching and funny and many of the supporting cast were very good. I liked the music too.

Too old for Hamlet and too young for Lear--what's an ambitious actor to do? Play the Devil, of course. Jack Nicholson did it in The Witches of Eastwick; Robert De Niro did it in Angel Heart (as Louis Cyphre--get it?). In The Devil's Advocate Al Pacino takes his turn as the great Satan, and clearly relishes his chance to raise hell. He's a New York lawyer, of course, by the name of John Milton, who recruits a hotshot young Florida attorney (Keanu Reeves) to his firm and seduces him with tempting offers of power, sex, and money. Think of the story as a twist on John Grisham's The Firm, with the corporate evil made even more explicit. Reeves is wooden, and therefore doesn't seem to have much of a soul to lose, but he's really just our excuse to meet the devil. Pacino's the main attraction, gleefully showing off his--and the Antichrist's--chops at perpetrating menace and mayhem. The film was directed by Taylor Hackford (<I>Against All Odds</I>, <I>Dolores Claiborne</I>), who provides alternate-track commentary for the movie itself, plus a dozen deleted scenes. Also note: due to a settlement with artist Frederick Hart over the movie's use of a sculpture resembling his <I>Ex Nihilo</I> in Washington's National Cathedral, future releases of the film will be altered. --Jim Emerson

Vanity..........2007-05-15
A very good movie, Devil's Advocate, brings to the screen the story of an unbeatable young lawyer from Florida who is invited to NY, along with his wife, in order to join one of the most prestigious law firms in the city. Things take a turn for the unexpected as NY is known for being a place where there's often much more than meets the eye...
Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, Charlize Theron and Connie Nielson (both of whom are GORGEOUS!), and the rest of the cast, have outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the music are all wonderful!
In short, Devil's Advocate is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!
Surely the Devil's work.......2007-04-20
I know I am up against many people here who have rated this move quite highly, with that I am willing to accept that I must of missed the point to this movie giving the fact that towards the end I hated it so much. I couldn't watch another second of it and turned it off with roughly 5 minutes to go, Pacino's last scene where he tells Keaunu the truth would have to be one of the worst written scenes I've ever seen. I found the first hour extremely boring, then it started to get a little bit interesting and then in the last half an hour it lost me again. Don't get me completely wrong the acting in this movie was A class from all actors, it's just a dam shame about the script. If I could give this movie 0 stars I would but seeing that I have to give it 1 the 1 star goes for the acting.
A Keeper !!!.......2007-04-09
So there isnt anything I can say that has not already been said, just know this is a great movie, a classic if I may say so my self. Its worth youre time!
Devil's Advocate..........2007-02-03
This movie was out there...but then again...what did you expect from anything where Mr. Mestophiles is concerned? Especially since if he's your boss? Mr. Pacino is nothing, if not brilliant! Keanu Reaves is in great form as the swaggering young attorney working for Mr. Pacino's firm. See for yourself (get yourself an inexpensive copy!) Five stars!!
Great triller.......2007-01-26
This is a brilliant movie. Everything about it screams class and whoever disagrees just isn't watching properly!
Kevin Lomax, (Keanu Reeves), plays a top attourney who is wooed by an elite law firm in New York. The Head of the company is John Milton, (Al Pacino), and he wants Kevin for more than just his talents in the court room.
Kevin and his wife Mary Ann, (Charlize Theron), move to New York and so begin their horrific journey into Hell! Everything seems perfect to begin with but slowly and surely things start going bad.
This is a brilliant tale of good vs evil, and you're never really sure whether Kevin and his wife are going to come out the other side. There are some very disturbing scenes and all are played to perfection. Charlize steals the show for me, she is such a great actress and she deserves more praise than she gets. Not many people could have played this role so convincingly.
The whole cast are fantastic and I applaud all involved in the making of this movie. If you fancy a good night in tucked up with a great film, then you should watch this one!

<I>--Mark Englehart</I>
Customer Reviews:
Great movie!!!.......2007-06-17

I wish I could give it 10 STARS.

If Brian De Palma directed <I>Mission to Mars</I> for 10-year-olds who've never seen a science fiction film, he can be credited for crafting a marginally successful adventure. Isolated moments in this film serve the highest purpose of its genre, inspiring a sense of wonder and awe in the context of a fascinating future (specifically, the year 2020). But because most of us have seen a lot of science fiction films, it's impossible to ignore this one's derivative plot, cardboard characters, and drearily dumb dialogue. Despite an awesome and painstakingly authentic display of cool technology and dazzling special effects, <I>Mission to Mars</I> is light years away from <I>2001: A Space Odyssey</I> on the scale of human intelligence.<P> After dispensing with a few space-jockey clichés, the movie focuses on a Mars-bound rescue mission commanded by Jim McConnell (Gary Sinise), whose team (Tim Robbins, Connie Nielsen, Jerry O'Connell) has been sent to retrieve the sole survivor (Don Cheadle) of a tragic Mars landing. During the sequence en route to Mars, De Palma's in his element with two suspenseful scenes (including a dramatic--albeit somewhat silly--space walk) that are technically impressive. But when this <I>Mission</I> gets to Mars, the movie grows increasingly unconvincing, finally arriving at an alien encounter that more closely resembles an astronomical CGI video game. But this is a $75 million Hollywood movie, and no amount of technical wizardry can lift the burden of a juvenile screenplay. Kudos to Sinise, his costars, and the special effects wizards for making the most of hoary material; shame on just about everyone else involved. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Description
From the director of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE comes the thrilling, eye-popping science fiction adventure MISSION TO MARS, starring Gary Sinise (SNAKE EYES) and Tim Robbins (HIGH FIDELITY). The year is 2020, and the first manned mission to Mars, commanded by Luke Graham (Don Cheadle, OCEANS 11), lands safely on the red planet. But the Martian landscape harbors a bizarre and shocking secret that leads to a mysterious disaster so catastrophic, it decimates the crew. Haunted by a cryptic last message from Graham, NASA launches the Mars Recovery Mission to investigate and bring back survivors -- if there are any. Confronted with nearly insurmountable dangers, but propelled by deep friendship, the team finally lands on Mars and makes a discovery so amazing, it takes your breath away. MISSION TO MARS is an action-packed rocket ride that will enthrall you with its stunning special effects and keep you on the edge of your seat.
Customer Reviews:
Why on Earth, or, uh, Mars, did this movie get so many negative reviews?!?! This is one of the best Sci-Fi films ever!! .......2007-05-17
You would think that the movie being reviewed here was a lame 50's or 70's B movie entitle "Attack of the Killer Blonde Bimbos" or something to that effect. I recently got a chance to view this entire film the other night and all I've got to say is "Man! This is a valuable lesson of not listening to the negative reviews before getting a chance to see the movie!! And, sad to say, this is exactly what kept me from seeing this movie for so long. I made the mistake of listening to all the negative ink about it. I can guarantee you that you will find this film at least very likable. The story is good and so is the acting, even though there may be a couple of hokey parts in the film. Most of it, though, is highly enjoyable and VERY believable. This has to be one best, as well as underrated, sci-fi films ever made. Definitely worth at least one viewing and definitely better than "Red Planet"!
Half of a good movie.......2007-04-12
I must say that the first half of the movie is very good. Great suspense, action and acting. The effects are good and the movie purrs like a porsche car after a tuning. Then they put cheap gas into it at the point of landing on Mars and this porsche starts to knock and ping like a pinto.(sorry just always wanted to use that analogy for a movie and it fits here)
The script goes flat as soon as the rescue party lands on Mars and instead of anything good it just dries up and becomes more and more a waste of time. Still it's an OK time passer.
A Very Good Sci-Fi Movie.......2007-03-28
Tim Robbins (Woody Blake) and Gary Sinise (Jim McConnell) star in this exciting and entertaining film about the first manned spaceflight to the planet Mars.
The mission is under the command of Luke Graham (played by Don Cheadle), and after six months of spaceflight, the group of astronauts finally lands on the red planet. However, the Martian landscape proves to be most inhospitable, as some unseen force from beneath the surface of the planet unleashes its fury on the small band of astronauts. Luke is the only survivor. He somehow manages to send a cryptic and garbled last message to NASA describing the events which befell his group.
NASA immediately launches the Mars Recovery Mission, led by McConnell and Blake, to investigate the mysterious happenings and bring back survivors, if there are any. Also along for the ride are Phil Ohlmyer (played by Jerry O'Connell), and Terri Fisher, Woody's wife, (played by Connie Nielsen).
During the flight, the ship encounters a micro-meteor shower, and the hull is breached. Working quickly, Jim and Woody manage to seal the punctured hull (or so they thought), but when they begin their descent to the Martian surface, a tremendous explosion rocks the ship. The crew is forced to abandon ship and try to reach a smaller scout ship which was inside the larger one. Due to poor calculations, the astronauts must navigate in space with jet packs to reach the smaller ship. Unfortunately, Woody overshoots the ship, but the others reach it safely and descend to the surface.
Once on Mars, the crew finds Luke and learns that he has made an amazing discovery; there is a large white face on the surface of the planet, but he doesn't know how it got there. When the astronauts go to investigate, they find that many of the secrets of the solar system are hidden inside. Will the crew make it back to earth safely?
This is a very good movie. The acting, especially by Sinise and Robbins, is excellent. I've always been a big fan of Gary Sinise and his movies, including "Apollo 13" and "Forrest Gump", and he's just as good in this movie. Robbins gives a performance on par with his "Bull Durham" role. The special effects are eye-popping, and the dance scene, complete with Van Halen's "Dance the Night Away", is one of the movie's best.
I recommend this movie very highly. Science Fiction fans will be sure to enjoy the secrets that lie on the Martian surface.
Mission to Mars.......2007-03-20
I think this is a great "space" sci-fi movie. We are getting nearer to the posibilty of travel to Mars so watching this story, you get the feeling that there is "plausibility" to the story. Good action, good "team-work". After having seen this movie as a TV broadcast, I knew I had to own it.
If your looking for any goo dripping, human mauling space monsters in this, you'll be disapointed. If your looking for good entertainment, this is for you.
DePalma's "2001" (or: 2020: The Year of Perfect Vision).......2007-01-29
Ok, this is a Brian DePalma film, let's establish that right off the bat. As I should've pointed out in any of my other reviews of DePalma's films, to appreciate (read "get") DePalma, one must be exposed to and appreciate films by filmmakers ranging from Michelangelo to Fellini, from Kubrick to Hitchcock, from Coppolla to Welles, from Hawks to Capra, from Donen to Lelouch, from Scorcese to Godard. Filmmakers who pioneered the art of visual storytelling, relying on great, strong, awe-inspiring, jaw dropping visuals coupled with good solid acting and a very enticing Human story; and not have to be "talked to death" with dialogue overflowing in EVERY scene. You have to, as a viewer, read facial expressions, eye movement, guess what's been said, guess what's going on, question where you may be in the movie as far as plot, keeping you almost in a state of utter confusion only to wrap everything together at film's end in a way that will have you feeling like the rug has just been pulled out from under you because it's done in such utter climatic fashion.
This film starts with a DePalma trademark crane tracking shot that goes on for the entire length of credits, starting with a rocketship launch that reveals itself to be only a bottle rocket as the film opens showing us that all is not what it appears to be from the start, and a back yard barbeque and all the characters that we'll need to know in this ten minute take. Then the shots of Mars, and the way scenes are done via telescreen depicting communication between the astronauts on Mars and the Space Station. The CGI in this film are amazing! Finally a great movie that uses CGI to serve the story instead of the other way around. The Martian Storm Funnel scene alone is worth viewing the film over and over for. The stunning way DePalma shows us a 'vortex' scene in so many different ways, or creating a 'vortex' mood in so many scenes. Ranging from the M&M's Phil (played brilliantly by the very talented Jerry O'Connel)has displayed as his ideal perfect woman to another scene where the M&M's are spilled and floating in a DNA form, to the scene where the micrometeroids hit the ship, and the Dr. Pepper and the leaking fuel are showing us the same DNA vortex. Or scenes showing the spaceship done in a whirling fashion. And I won't spoil the ending by saying that it is nothing short of an AWESOME vortex climax that will leave you breathless (with maybe a few tears slipping down your cheeks), then laughing lightly as the other ship goes SHOOTING by into the vortex and the words THE END popping up, as they did in movies of yore.
Now, let me note that the reason I'm doing a plot summary the way I am is because that this is a DePalma film that I was expecting to go in a different direction than it took when I first saw it when it first hit video. As a matter of fact, I let myself be led to believe that the film was building toward something sinister, like Tobe Hooper's "Invaders From Mars", or Phillip Kaufman's "Invasion Of The Body Snatchers", between what was happening on screen visually along with composer Ennio Morriconne's AWESOME score. So, when the four main characters meet the Martian alien, which I now realize upon subsequent viewings is an Ancient Martian Spirit, I initially hated this movie as it continued on from there until the final minute or two. I even found myself telling my friend I was viewing this with : "This s**ks! DePalma has finally made a movie that I HATE!", then as I was speaking, the final minute or two Paul Hirsch's edited flashback scene pops up from out of nowhere and I was stunned; and the other part of the ending all worked for me. I immediately watched it again as soon as I could, and I've loved it even more every time I've viewed it, which is very often.
When you realize the whole story revolves around Maggie and about going "Home", you may even realize why the Martian Spirit is crying a single tear when She appears (it's not just because She sensed the pain of their journey, and their pain of losing a friend/pilot along the way. She is also crying a tear for all Humanity). I used to have a bit of trouble with some of the dialgue in this scene, for I thought it somewhat unneccesary, but then realized that it's there so that the fact the Ancient Martian Spirit and Gary Sinise's character communicate telepathically for just a few seconds, in a very short moment that is done in a "visual storytelling" way, is more evident on subsequent viewings. You can almost hear the words: Martian-"You want to go Home?" and Sinise's reply-"Yes, I do." And, oh my god, the evolution scene is AWESOME! Yet, for any Christian viewers, this is a Disney film, so listen for a lot of nice references to God and Jesus, and a nice film free from any vulgar profanity. Not that profanity offends me ("Scarface" is one of my all-time favorites -another DePalma classic!- has f**k in it over 100+ times, but it serves the story of that film; in this one there's no need for it.)
As for film making techniques that I hinted at before, now that I've mentioned Maggie (SO perfectly played by the great Kim Delaney), a character that's not only seen but one time in the film (well, twice counting the flashback at the end), yet a character that is definetly no SMALL character; as there never seem to be any of those in any of DePalma's films - even the SMALLEST of roles are also most times some of the most key roles- is shown to us in a movie within a movie within a movie, and to me this movie is worth owning just for scenes like that alone, let alone all the other NUMEROUS scenes that are just awe-inspiring to any film student today. Yes, there's maybe some nonperfect dialgoue, and/or dialgoue in a scene that didn't need it, but overall this is a solid masterpiece of sci-fi! I would easily rank this on the same level as Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner", Spielberg's "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind", George Lucas' first 3 "Star Wars" films, or "Contact". No gory "Men In Black" type aliens, thank God. A simple story about a lonely widower that only wants to go "Home", even if it means leaving the world you're in now to get there, this is an AWESOME version of any "Odyssey" story ever told!

Kurt Russell hits new heights in laconic action heroes with his portrayal of Sergeant Todd, born and bred to be a soldier in a futuristic army. Raised to kill mercilessly, living only for battle, he finds himself at the twilight of his career (and so-called life) when a regiment of genetically enhanced warriors threatens to make his brand of soldiering obsolete. Despite his extensive skills, he is no match for the best of breed of the new order, and he's left for dead on a planet that serves only as a junk heap. There he encounters a ragtag group of castaways, and in his own strange and silent way slowly begins to learn how to be less a killer and more a human. All is disrupted, though, when the genetic regiment arrives on the trash planet and decides to eradicate the local human "trespassers." Though Todd had been overmatched before, this time he has more than ever to fight for--a home, and friends. <I>Soldier</I> is one of those rare sci fi movies that relies more on plot and action than special effects (though the trash planet is effectively wrought). The pace of action in the last half of the film is relentless and exciting, and Russell's portrayal of the old warrior as he warms to human emotions relies more on expression than words--in fact, he barely utters more than a half-dozen lines. <I>--Tod Nelson</I>

Much Maligned Film Deserves to Be Seen.......2007-06-18
Critically smashed at the time and DOA at the box office, Soldier was one a huge run of mega budgeted flops Warner Bros released in 1997 & 1998. But the suprise is how good this by the numbers sc-ifi actioner really is.
Kurt Russell gives one of his most phenomenal performances as the emotionally stunted lead character. It's a true tour de force of cinematic acting-he hardly says a word, but his eyes, expression and body language surge through the screen.
Paul WS Anderson's direction is efficient and tight, it's more his approach the the look and feel of the material that's the problem. David Webb People's script is terrific and you can't help but wonder what Ridley Scott or even John McTiernan might have be able to do with this.
This is kind of an 80's throwback that you could imagine being an absolute blockbuster for Schwarzenegger in his prime- but it's 10 years too late, despite the brillant work of it's star.
Kurt did a great job.......2007-06-10
Personally, I think that the lack of lines for Kurt enhanced this brilliant movie. The music of Loreena Mckennit is beautiful.
Fear and discipline.......2007-05-28
Not a huge budget killer movie, but definately a good movie to watch if you like future scifi movies. Kurt Russell does a really good job of playing the emotionless killing machine without feelings. Upon becoming "obsolete" and tossed with the garbage, he never loses the spirit of a hardened soldier. Cool effects and weapons, gotta love the chain gun in any movie. Worth buying on Amazon if you like future scifi and/or Kurt Russell.
Soldier.......2007-05-12
Great Si-Fi action flick. This movie will be for all whom love Si-Fi movies and Kurt Russell. The price was right.
Surprise for the box office bomb .......2007-04-07
Although this movie didn't do great at the box office, it continues to provide a strong multi-level entertainment.
Yes, the movie has good sci-fi action adventure complete with believeable sets, futuristic equipment and a Sparta like training regimine taken to a extreme end--but, we also find the emotional content of the soldier who was de-humanized from training become human again after meeting the loving family. We find a small tramatized child who shares a "quiet" in common with the soldier. The soldier is also dealing with "old age" after a fashion.
For me, this movie makes it into my personal top ten. However, as everyone has different tastes, I recommend that the reader go rent this video and then, I believe he or she will come back to Amazon and order it.

If you thought <I>The Recruit</I> was full of surprises, <I>Basic</I> will spin your head around. Assuming that cleverness is its own reward, this military mystery shares many of <I>The Recruit</I>'s strengths and weaknesses, offering multi-layered deception as its dramatic <I>raison d'etre</I>. Copping plenty of machismo attitude befitting a semi-effective thriller from <I>Die Hard</I> director John McTiernan, John Travolta stars as an ex-Army Ranger-turned-DEA agent, recruited by an Army investigator (Connie Nielsen) to solve the fratricide of a reviled Sergeant (Samuel L. Jackson) who was <I>allegedly</I> killed while commanding a Special Forces training mission in the hurricane-swept rainforests of Panama. Two survivors (Giovanni Ribisi in a showboat role, and Brian Van Holt) recall the ill-fated mission as the truth unfolds, <I>Rashomon</I>-style, in a series of repetitive flashbacks. Tricky enough to hold one's attention as it grows increasingly irrelevant, <I>Basic</I> is so enamored of its bogus ingenuity that its ultimate twist is a letdown. A second viewing might prove rewarding, if only to confirm that it all holds together. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Customer Reviews:
It keeps you guessing.......2007-05-16
I need to provide some backstory on my viewing experience of John McTiernan's 2003 military thriller "Basic". Is there such a thing as a "military thriller"? Ah, never mind. Anyway, I rented a copy of "Basic" and let it sit on the DVD player for a few days before I got around to watching it. Big mistake. Between the time when I picked up the disc and when I popped it in the player, I came down with a serious cold. I'm talking a SERIOUS cold. The type of cold that makes you wish they sold Kleenex by the metric ton. The sort of cold where you breathe through your mouth because your nasal passages feel like someone packed them full of cement with a cannon ramrod. I did the only sane thing a person could do: I loaded up with cold medication. Cough syrup, aspirin, anti-histamines, cough drops, nasal spray--you name it, I was taking it by the handfuls. The resulting effect of my medicinal intake, I must say, can only be described as kaleidoscopic. I felt like my head had turned into a balloon filled with laughing gas. It was in this state of mind that I viewed "Basic".
That was a big mistake, as we'll see shortly. "Basic" begins by showing us a routine military training mission in the jungles of Panama. Amidst a raging hurricane, Sergeant Nathan West (Samuel L. Jackson) runs his team of Army Rangers ragged. He's a tough guy, as tough as a steel pipe, and all of the members of his squad despise him. Then a tragedy unfolds out in the jungle, a tragedy that claims the life of West and several other members of the squad. Only two survive, in fact. In order to figure out what happened, the Army brings in crack investigator Tom Hardy (John Travolta) to solve the mystery. Tom's an ex-Ranger and a DEA agent currently under investigation for unethical behavior. The base's commander and Hardy's pal Styles (Tim Daly) teams Tom up with a southern belle, Lieutenant Osborne (Connie Nielsen), and the two start interrogating the first survivor, Dunbar (Brian Van Holt). Tom's a whiz at questioning suspects, and he gets Dunbar's story--which we see unfold in flashback--in quick order. It's a weird tale about murder and mayhem out in the jungle. Of course, several details don't really match up with the facts, so Hardy and Osborne must move on to the next survivor.
Kendall (Giovanni Ribisi) lies in a hospital bed recovering from his injuries when our two heroes show up to start the questioning. His story, which we also see in flashback, differs from Dunbar's tale of woe in significant ways. As Hardy and Osborne begin to examine the threads winding their way through the two stories, they uncover more than they bargained for. They keep going back and forth between the two, Dunbar and Kendall, trying to pry more information out of them after confronting each one with their inconsistencies. Most alarmingly, Kendall suddenly dies in his hospital bed after bleeding out of every orifice in his head. Is this an attempt by someone or several someones to get him to shut up? Yes, yes it is. It can't be Dunbar because he's still locked up in another room on the base. Could it have something to do with one of the base physicians, Dr. Vilmer (Harry Connick, Jr.)? Maybe Colonel Styles knows more than he's letting on. He's Hardy's friend, but that doesn't mean he shares everything with him. Heck, what about Osborne? She seems like a straight arrow, but she couldn't get Dunbar to talk (which necessitated the arrival of Hardy). Maybe that was all an act to hide something.
I'm not going forward with more plot points because I don't want to spoil the film for you. Not that I could, mind you, since "Basic" ranks highly on my "Most Confusing and Convoluted Films Ever to Emerge from Hollywood" list. McTiernan and writer James Vanderbilt offer the viewer so many flashback scenarios, red herrings, and numerous plot twists that my head started hurting. Even more confusing was the tendency to tell further stories in the middle of flashbacks. Ouch! I just bailed on the story, blew my nose a couple of times, and tried to focus on things that made sense, like the performances. They're good. Travolta plays smart aleck pretty well, and Sam Jackson knows how to play an overbearing jerk. Connie Nielsen does an acceptable job, but that southern accent has to go, like, yesterday! It's nice to see Tim Daly in a major motion picture, and Giovanni Ribisi goes over the top as Kendall. The movie's atmosphere works well for such a murky murder mystery/conspiracy story, but the wind and crashing rain tend to drown out the dialogue. I was always fiddling with the volume control trying to understand what the characters were saying. I fiddled in vain.
I highly recommend you don't watch "Basic" while under the influence of cold medicine. A confusing film like this one becomes nearly unwatchable on Nyquil and anti-histamines. Having said that, I actually like it enough to give it four stars. I enjoy watching Italian murder mysteries called giallo, which often achieve heights of confusion more labyrinthine in execution than what "Basic" offered, so it's all to the good. The DVD version of the film offers us several extras, none of them very interesting. We get a boring commentary track with director McTiernan, an extended interview with writer Vanderbilt, and a lengthy lovefest with the actors. You've seen this last supplement a million times. It consists of interviews with the cast where everyone heaps praise on the film and on their fellow actors. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Whatever. If you're feeling adventurous, give "Basic" a shot. I hope you like it.
Basic Incompetence By Everyone Across The Board!.......2007-01-25
This movie should be shown to classrooms of aspiring screenwriters and directors as an example of how not to be sucked into the Hollywood junk machine. The screenwriter of this movie obviously had some ideas about a coherent story that he wanted to tell about moral relativity and corrupt military officials. This film's story structure is mostly influenced by the classic film Rashomon. Well, so what happened? How did this ungracious disaster of a movie make it to the big screen? The biggest culprits are easily the movie stars, John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, using their bloated star egos to force the screenwriter to rework his material into something they ultimately found more suitable to their star personas. Disgusting! Travolta was supposed to be a bad guy and Jackson was supposed to bite the bullet, but no way would the two Hollywood jerks allow that!
SPOILER ALERT: Who in their right mind was surprised by the ending? I knew Sam Jackson was in on it from the get go and soon enough he would grace us with his presence. Lo and behold, his bald head emerges at the end of the movie wearing a white outfit like an angel of some sort. I hate this movie, it's an insult to the audience! John McTiernan, ( Predator, Die Hard ), the director of Basic should be ashamed of such a lackluster effort on his part. But what could he do when faced with the two morons who played the leads! A sad joke of a movie, avoid it unless you just love junk.
I DON'T KNOW WHY, BUT I LIKE THIS MOVIE!.......2006-11-24
My husband, ex-military and combat veteran , doesn't watch war movies, but a friend recommended this movie and, when it arrived, my "MAN" agreed to watch it with me. Well, Honey, what do you think? HE SAID: "HOLLYWOOD TRULY IS A LAND OF IMAGINATION AND FANTASY." I SAID: "THAT WAS A GOOD WAR MOVIE." HE SAID: "THAT WAS NOT A WAR MOVIE, IT WAS A MOVIE ABOUT PERSONALITIES: THERE WAS NO WAR IN THAT MOVIE." Well, he's right, but, I LIKED THIS MOVIE, AND, I THINK, MOST OTHER PEOPLE WILL TO.
A movie worth watching.......2006-04-30
Definitely a very good movie, Basic, is a military mystery that brings to the screen the story of a U.S. Ranger training mission gone awry in Panama. Subsequently, an ex-Ranger is teamed up with the base investigator to try and shed light on the mysterious circumstances that led to the near annihilation of the entire squad.
The film combines drama, mystery, action and adventure making it one of the best of its kind.
John Travolta, Samuel Jackson, Connie Nielsen, Giovanni Ribisi, Brian Van Holt, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
The plot, the setting, the dialogues, the special effects, and the music are all wonderful!
In short, it is a movie definitely worth watching! Strongly recommended along with Black Hawk Down, A Few Good Men, Rules of Engagement, and Courage Under Fire. 4 1/2 Stars
Enjoyable Thiller.......2006-03-07
Typically popcorn thriller. A little predictable, but nevertheless enjoyable with good performances from Jackson, typical Travolta overacting and Connie Nielsen is a little out of place playing an american captain with an exotic euro accent.
Good twists and turns, and fine editing. A nice Rashoshonan type tale where the same story is told from several point of views and the audience is challenged on which side is the real truth.

As played by Schwartzman, Max is both immediately endearing and ferociously irritating: smarter than all the adults around him,
