A surprisingly engaging story of puppy love and friendship in a teen setting, this film focuses on the title character (Corey Haim), who is nerdy but winningly outgoing. He falls madly for a new girl in town (Kerri Green); since school is out for the summer, he becomes her only friend--until she meets his hunky pal (Charlie Sheen). Meanwhile, Lucas ignores the romantic yearnings of another female pal (Winona Ryder, in her screen debut). Written and directed by David Seltzer, this one is a charmer with substance, featuring strong, open performances by its young cast. It's also fascinating to watch today, more than a decade later, and consider what became of these performers: while Ryder grew to be one of Hollywood's brightest lights, Haim descended into substance abuse, as did Sheen, whose predilection for call girls also made him a talk-show punch line. --Marshall Fine

Description

At 14 years old, Lukas is a bit too small for his age, and far too smart for his high school classmates. He's more interested in symphonies and science fairs than food fights and football. But when Lucas finds himself falling in love with a cheerleader, who only has eyes for the school's top jock, he grows desperate for her attention, Even if it means risking his pride and his neck at the big game.

5 out of 5 stars "LUCAS" IS CLASSIC, CHARMING, POIGNANT TRIP BACK TO MID-1980'S TEEN CINEMA.......2007-06-06

Long before he was forced by obscurity and/or poverty to try selling his teeth on the Internet for cash, Corey Haim had a brief heydey in mid-1980's films.
(SEE HAIM ALSO IN "SILVER BULLET" AND "THE LOST BOYS.")
This charming film from writer/director David Seltzer is the best. I was delighted to find this on DVD at Amazon, com, and equally delighted to find, after all these years, that the movie retains all of its charm.

Haim plays Lucas, a scrawny geek who doesn't fit in anywhere. He covers his pain by being goofy and outspoken. We know little of his home life. We hear his dad is "alcoholic" and nobody knows where his mother is.
Lucas is smart and sensitive. Lucas loves insects and classical music. He soon falls in love with Maggie (Kerri Green) the new girl in town. The two begin a touching friendship, but things change a bit once school starts. Maggie cares for Lucas, but falls for sensitive/sexy football player Cap (Charlie Sheen). Meanwhile, Lucas never notices that Rena (Winona Ryder in her film debut) has a crush on him. Instead, he joins the football team in order to prove his "prowess" and attractiveness to females. Lucas nearly gets himself killed, but he gains the respect of the entire school.
There is one unfortunate moment in a football team locker room/shower scene where a negative term for "gay" (The Other "F" word) is used. That is unnecessary, but brief. This is almost compensated for by the fact that, even here at age 22. Charlie Sheen is smolderingly sexy. Sheen appears in a lengthy scene without a shirt on, and I say "Thank You, God!" for that. Gratuitous, yes, but I'm extremely grateful.
You could watch this movie and play a game of "Whatever Became Of..." ? as several members of the young cast, including Jeremy Piven, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Ryder, and Charlie Sheen went on to notably careers. I think Sheen and Green appeared together in another film at the same time period titled "THREE FOR THE ROAD". If anybody knows where I can pick that one up, please let me know; and, does anybody know whatever happened to Kerri Green? I'd like to know. And, say what you will about his messy private life or controversial political views, Sheen is a survivor who has worked for a stable, solid career. Whatever individual fates may have befallen the cast, and the sad fact that Haim has virtually vanished off the world radar, "LUCAS" holds up remarkably well; well enough, in fact, to achieve a poignant timelessness and be acknowledged as one of the "CLASSIC" teen films of the 1980's era.
The double sided DVD includes both Full Screen and Wide-Screen presentations of the film

5 out of 5 stars The Painful First Love.......2007-05-13

A beautiful history of a first love between two teenagers. This history is not far from actual love stories, a handsome men, whit an actual girlfriend, but he is falling in love from other girl, and thes girl has a fan too, who is falling in love... Corey Haim, Charlie Sheen and Winona Ryder looks very young in this excellent film.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Silly 80s Movie.......2007-04-01

The eighties were Hollywood's "Golden Age" when it comes to teen movies. For a few years you had a string of movies featuring realistic dialog and an accurate depiction of teenage angst caused by the belief that everything matters just a bit too much. Sure, the plots could be clichéd, but the characters and dialog were believable and nothing was too far-fetched or predictable. Of course, all good things come to an end and now the term "teen movie" refers to a comedy filled with one-dimensional characters, nudity, and shock humor. There's nothing wrong with an over-the-top comedy, but it's a shame that they've more or less wiped out the old teen dramas and coming-of-age stories.

When it comes to the eighties movies it seems like the Brat Pack/John Hughes films get the most attention, but the best movie of them all was David Seltzer's "Lucas."

Here's the basic plot: Maggie moves to town during the summer and gets noticed by a local nerd, Lucas. A friendship forms between them, even though he's younger, and he develops a crush on her, but things change when school starts. It's not that she doesn't want to be his friend--but she also meets new people, and Lucas is so busy trying to be a part of Maggie's world that he doesn't even notice the advances of another girl (a young Winona Ryder).

"Lucas" is melodramatic at times, but that just makes it more realistic. Teenagers DO tend to make everything into a life-or-death situation and they make crazy choices to get what they want. All of the characters in this movie defy stereotypes. Lucas isn't just nerd who can be written off--he's a sympathetic character. But so is Maggie...and the jock football player played by Charlie Sheen. Everyone makes tough choices due to their hormones. It's easy to think the movie is silly at time--it's been spoofed a hundred times I think--but it's also a movie worth seeing. It was pretty much the best thing Cory Haim or Kerri Green ever starred in.

5 out of 5 stars Lucus.......2007-03-10

This is a great movie especially for young teenagers. This story is about a small boy (Lucus, the underdog) trying to win the affection of a pretty red headed girl. Though Lucus has fallen in love with the red headed girl, she is in love with another boy. While Lucus tries to win her over, he is blinded that another girl cares deeply about him. This movie has several great teenage stars like Charlie Sheen, Winona Ryder and Corey Haim

Not nearly as raunchy as some of the other teen exploitation films that came out around the same time, Summer School is a feel-good movie in which all the characters are clueless, but also kind of likeable for some inexplicable reason. Mark Harmon stars as Freddy Shoop, a lazy physical education instructor who is forced by his nemesis (aka The Principal) to teach summer school. He's not lucky enough to get the overachiever kids who attend summer school because they want to; Shoop gets the students who have to attend because they've failed. As you might expect, his class is full of lazy losers who don't think of summer school as real school. Actually, Shoop kind of agrees with them. He's not as irresponsible as he would have them believe, although he's not above bribing them to do their best. Released theatrically in 1987, the film stars a very young Courtney Thorne-Smith (Melrose Place, According to Jim) as one of the students. And Kirstie Alley (Cheers) appears as Shoop's love interest. Directed by Carl Reiner, Summer School has an almost innocent feel. It's the silly movie trying to pass itself off as naughty, but really it's not. Summer School was released before filmmakers knew they needed to save good outtakes and bloopers for DVDs, so the special features aren't all that special. The most appealing is footage of some of the cast members while the film was being shot. But if you're curious about listening to the audio commentary offered by Harmon and Reiner, take a pass. Though both men are charming on talk shows, neither is particularly insightful here. --Jae-Ha Kim

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Still an enjoyable movie 20 years later.......2007-06-05

I never equated Summer School with anything remotely raunchy, so I was surprised to see that term brought up in the top review here in regard to this movie.

I loved watching this when it was first on cable nearly twenty years ago and I look forward to watching this again real soon. I enjoyed Mark Harmon's and Kirstie Alley's performances, and seeing the star review reminded me of Courtney Thorne-Smith's performance back when she was an unknown (I always love looking at, or thinking about, movies from the 80s and 90s and having those wide-eyed moments when you recognize someone who's very well-known today, yet you glanced over them back in the day). Dean Cameron's role as one of the main class clowns was memorable.

Even though the plot was funny and carefree, one can't help but think it's possible that kids who can't read, or who are dyslexic, or have seemingly insurmountable personal problems can't succeed if just one person or teacher took the time to show them they cared (minus the bribing - or did that help in the end?).

This is an enjoyable film that hasn't lost its touch after 20 years (wow, how time flies!). It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it, and, perhaps, a few memories for those of us who went to summer school to chuckle at. - Donna Di Giacomo

4 out of 5 stars Its hard to teach summer school.......2007-05-30

The kids minds on other things and people, like learining to drive, gving birth, learning to read again and so on!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome classic..........2007-05-12

Great classic, with some awesome stars in it. Truly a defining movie of the 80's period.

4 out of 5 stars This one's a keeper.......2007-02-22

Although my wife doesn't like this movie (for reasons she can't seem to articulate), I have seen this movie several times, and I laugh through it every time. Maybe I'm just ready to laugh at anything or maybe I'm just a Mark Harmon fan, because I haven't seen any of his movies that I don't enjoy. I recommend this one with the caveat that its humor may be too slapstick for some.

5 out of 5 stars "Happy that the world is upside down".......2007-02-14

"Summer School" surprised a lot of critics by bringing something new to a genre most people had already had enough of by the time of its release (1987). With a spunky screenplay and Carl Reiner's gift for comedic timing, the film fills in a gap neglected by the majority of the decade's other high school pics, whose styles were polarized between the rebellious, goofy sexcapades found in John Hughes' brat pack series, and more "mature," galvanizing films like "Stand and Deliver."

"Summer School" begins with Danny Elfman's song "Happy" playing as the clock counts down and students prepare for summer. Reiner himself portrays usual summer teacher, Mr. Dearadorian, who happens to win fifty thousand dollars in a scratch off lottery just as the last bell rings. His boss, Vice Principal Phil Gills (Robin Thomas) tries to tell him there is no Island, but he quits anyway.

Gills approaches Freddy Shoop (Mark Harmon), a gym teacher who is ready to spend the summer in Hawaii with his girlfriend -- "We got leis on and everything." Gills threatens his tenure, so he decides to stay. Shoop tries to get his girlfriend to stay by quoting "There's no place like home." She says she understands and will just go without him.

Mr. Shoop's class is made up of group of slackers and misfits who for a variety of reasons failed the English skills test required to graduate.

There are: Dave and Chainsaw, an inseparable pair, one is obsessed with Chainsaw, the other with the film, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"; There's Alan, the black-sheep of a genius family; Anna Maria, a buxom foreign exchange student brushing up on her English skills; Pam House, a spaced-out surfer girl with a thing for Mr. Shoop (I think it's funny the DVD's "Set-up" menu features a picture of her); Kevin, a football player kicked off the team for "being stupid"; Jerome, who spends most of the film in the bathroom; Rhonda, who is pregnant with either Sean Penn or David Lee Roth's child, Denise, a bad driver who suffers from dyslexia, and Larry who sleeps all the time because of his night job.

At first Shoop doesn't take his job seriously and takes the class on field trips to the beach, go-kart races, and theme parks. Then Dave and Chainsaw almost get arrested for drinking on the beach. Mr. Shoop says the booze was his, and gets arrested. Gills tries to fire him, but Dave and Chainsaw put on a Grand Guignol classroom show that scares away the replacement teacher, and the students demand Shoop returns. I'm probably revealing too much plot info here, but I mainly just wanted to note the blood and guts classroom scene doesn't seem as funny now in wake of all the school shootings. Though I know if I hadn't have made splatter films in high school I probably would've blown up the school, so maybe the film will help some people.

Anyway, Shoop seeks the aid of Robin Bishop (Kirstie Alley), who is teaching honor students who are spending their summer voluntarily in a classroom nearby. He likes her. She eventually likes him, even though she's seeing Gills.

Everything turns out okay in the end as you'd expect from this type of film; what's different is that there aren't any real bad guys, just a lot of miscommunication. Gills is presented in the worst light, but even he is spared the humiliation that similar characters in this genre of films usually receive (Ferris Bueller's Ed Rooney for example.) Here, Gills just loses the girl because he's intolerant and inflexible. Shoop and his students learn how to adapt.

Before "Summer School," I always resented Harmon for ruining the TV show "Moonlighting," but now I realize it's probably due more to the show's creators having a brain freeze after David and Maddie said two dirty words and finally slept together. "Summer School" was Harmon's first role after his "Moonlighting" appearances, and it's probably his most memorable and endearing (unless you like Ted Bundy).

There are a few dated references -- for instance, Dave and Chainsaw sing Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time" and Rhonda mentions Sean Penn's marriage to Madonna -- but the film should still entertain audiences young and old - it even includes an homage to "From Here to the Eternity," with Shoop and Robin kissing on the beach, joined by Shoop's dog, Wondermutt, and his favorite toy, a stuffed doll's head named Bob.

5 out of 5 stars FOR THE 90's BEACH VOLLEYBALL FAN.......2006-08-28

A MUST HAVE MOVIE FOR THE 90's BEACH VOLLEYBALL FAN. AN ENTERTAINING FAMILY FUTURE STARTING WITH MOST OF THE REAL BEACH VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS CAMEOS, INCLUDING THE KING OF THE BEACH DUO FOR THOSE TIMES, RANDY STOCKLOS AND SINJIN SMITH, AS THE UNBEATABLE RIVAL TEAM.

3 out of 5 stars NICE, IF UNREMARKABLE.......2006-07-15

"Side Out" is a breezy, if unremarkable film. If you love beach volleyball, you'll love this film. The "Rocky" of the sport.

2 out of 5 stars Happy crap...........2004-07-26

This is a pretty bad movie, but if you are in the mood for that, watch Side Out. If you have a hangover on a Sunday afternoon, this movie may fit the bill. The dialogue will make you squirm, and then crack up. The movie isn't mean-spirited, just painfully cheesy. Nothing happens in the flick that you wouldn't expect. The best part of the movie is the dialogue. It's priceless!

4 out of 5 stars An Absolutely Brilliant Piece of Filmmaking.......2004-05-18

Side Out is just an incredible film. From the moment Monroe Clark steps off the plane from Milwaukee and onto the hot sandy beach volleyball scene, the action just never stops. When Zack Barnes speaks you listen. Peter Horton's finest hour. C. Thomas Howell's career had nowhere to go but, downhill from here. How he got sunbbed by the Academny, I will never know. This is just a true classic and must have for any respectable movie collector.

4 out of 5 stars Laughable, yet, enticing.......2004-04-27

OK, for so many different reasons I could easily pan this. The volleyball action by a certain duo, namely horton / howell, really stinks! The acting is out and out crap, Stoklos and Smiths final film for a reason.
HOWEVER, I love this movie, if for no other reason that you get to see some of the classic players; Timmons, Stoklos, Smith, Mootheart, and of course OB. It is a fun romp through a sillier time, when anyone without a sponsorship deal could dream. Just don't expect too much.

Courtney Thorne-Smith delivers a natural ability to go beyond television in a dramatic capacity where she is able to show a whole new facet of her acting repetoire. The book based on a tragic true story also made me fall in love with Tracy Gold. It's a wonderful terrible murder story, if you know what I mean. And they wouldn't keep making them if we didn't watch them, and ladies, it is a love triangle thing, which makes it extra compelling.

Description

American Comedy Awards "Comedian of the Year," Craig Shoemaker, stars as himself in this uproariously funny film, which explores the life that led to becoming a stand-up comic. Craig was raised in an all-female household by his belly-dancing mother, pot smoking grandmother, and wore hand-me-down halter tops from his sisters. Out of necessity, he created his alter ego, the embodiment of what every man wants to be, and every woman wants to have--The Lovemaster!

I havew personally seen the "Lovemaster" live at a local comedy club in L.A. He is truely talented and I would compare him to the caliber of Jerry Lewis of old. You won't go wrong with this DVD. Plenty of laughs.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2000-03-17

This movie was absolutely great. I laughed soo hard. I had borrowed it from a friend and I couldn't wait to find a place to purchase it.

Real funny movie with great bits of Craig's act in between. Farrah Fawcett is hilarious as the dream girl. A very funny movie.

Edison (Carrot Top) is a surfing would-be inventor who makes goofy Rube Goldberg-style gadgets. Here's a taste: a drinking glass with a forehead heater to prevent brain freeze. They're all pretty much like that. The chairman of a large corporation (Jack Warden), who had shown interest in Edison's "ideas," dies and leaves Edison in charge of his company. Another would-be benefactor (Larry Miller), beaten out of his inheritance by Edison, makes it his evil mission to wrest control of the company from the ne'er-do-well with the shock of silly hair. A thin formula on which to hang some amazingly unfunny gags, all done in a broad cartoon-style, but with no flair. Puts the stupid in Stupid Comedy, then takes out all the comedy. Well, okay, not all. The videotaped will takes the form of a game show, presenting things to be inherited as prizes in the manner of Wheel of Fortune, complete with its own Vanna White. The rest is one lame attempt at a joke after another, with some time taken for Carrot Top to do pale imitations of Jim Carrey, possibly unintentionally. Highlights include Cindy Margolis. --Jim Gay

5 out of 5 stars Out of the park, clearly.......2006-07-30

I'd like to doff my hat to Carrot Top for single-handedly drawing attention to, and gaining some long-deserved respect for the red-headed people of the Earth. I'm not a redhead myself, but I still think it's pretty amazing. Those of us with black hair and dark eyes could really use someone like Carrot Top to champion our own cause and maybe squeeze a drop of d@*n respect from The Man too.

Chairman of the Board. CHAIRMAN of the Board. Not *lap monkey* of the Board. Not *yes sah, what I can get y'all sah* of the Board. Chairman. CHAIRMAN of the Board. Hear that Mr. Bush? Carrot Top's a knockin'.

And so was my funny bone when I stumbled across this treasure in VHS format on the clearance rack of Wal-Mart late one Wednesday night. It was a gamble, but I was very drunk, or something closely resembling that, and my friend, Eponu, convinced me it was a good idea. He was right. Righter than he'd been, even, about the chili-cheese Fritos the night before.

I'd always thought Carrot's TV commercials pretty much sucked. They always made me wonder "where's that guy's eyebrows, anyhow?" And seeing him get more muscular just made the mascara look even creepier. But this film is from before his almost-cross dresser period. And it's pretty obvious why the TV marketers scoured the depths of whatever bathroom he was probably living in at the time to get his name in ink on a shiny new contract. Mr. Top here shows that he is to cinema what Jerry Seinfeld was to television. It is a travesty that this movie is doomed to lie forever buried in obscurity, the world not having been ready to receive it when it was actually released.

So you'd better snap up a copy soon, because I seriously doubt there will be any future re-releases before they get around to doing some kind of comprehensive retrospective of films that changed the world. And even then, you'd have to sift through all that Bogart/Orwell/Hitchcock rubbish to get to the good stuff. Far and away one of the best titles you can have in your collection for those times when it's 3 in the morning and you and your friends have gone through 2 bags of chips and are working on that old box of cornflakes that never gets eaten.

I only regret I never had the chance to catch it in its true crowning glory on the big screen.

5 out of 5 stars A laugh a minute.......2006-04-25

I have just spent the last two hours watching Carrot Top's 'Chairman of the Board' for the first time. It was so good I watched it fifteen times. I love his crazy hair, his bucked teeth and big ears. My favourite bit was when Elmer was walking through the forest with his hunting gun and says "Be vewy, vewy, qwuiwet. I'm hunting wabbits! he! he! he! he!". The next thing you know Carrot Top leaps out of a hole and hollers "What's up Doc?" gnaws on a carrot and he dives back into the hole. This film has exactly three hundred and nine jokes and I laughed at three hundred and eight of them and that was only because I was out of the room every time that joke was executed.

Carrot Top's 'Chairman of the Board' is comedy genius, the jokes are fresh and ahead of their time. This film is so funny I think that it should be banned as I nearly died laughing.

I award this film five stars a WG Sinclair big double thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Carrot Top is a Delight.......2006-01-09

Just remember: Carrot Top cannot be equalled. This movie should have garnered an Oscar for every word of dialogue uttered within its parameters. I'm sure that giving out 32,684 Oscars for one movie would have bankrupted the gold industry, but it would been worth it.

5 out of 5 stars An artist at his peak.......2005-05-06

I have been lucky enough in my lifetime to see Michael Jordan at his peak, Tiger Woods at his finest and Ralph Macchio in Karate Kid. It is a special feeling when you know you are a witness to greatness at a historical level. This movie gives you that chance. Carrot Top is just brilliant and gifted. I think we can all agree on that fact. His prop gigs have revolutionized high level comedy at a level on Gallagher and Jeff Foxworthy can relate to. I've seen his stand up act 231 times and never fail to lose control of my bladder. That being said, Carrot Top on the big screen given an oscar level screenplay is just heavenly. Courtney Thorne Smith continues her trend of dating top level leading men like Jim Belushi and Lewis from Revenge of the Nerds. I bet a lot of ladies wish they had her agent. Larry Miller is, well, Larry Miller. Nothing more needs to be said. He's in that Hanks, Gibson, Freeman pantheon of great actors of our lifetime.

This story is just gripping and takes you on an emotional rollercoaster you could only simulate if your cat died, followed by intercourse with Pam Anderson, followed by an infomercial on Tony Robbins, topped off with a Pizza Party thrown at your house by Jay Leno. I was so emotionally spent after this film, I called in sick to work for the next 5 days. Do yourself a favor and see this masterpiece.

1 out of 5 stars This film could be used to torture people in foreign countri.......2004-12-20

Unspeakably bad! If you are a fan of movies like Werewolf and
Final Examination, you will probably love this. An act of Congress needs to be passed to prevent Carrot Top from ever working in show business again!

Great fun! Classic 80's teen movie. Long before I dated top actresses, had #1 hits and became a friend to nearly every star from Hollywood to London, I used my birth name to write a song for this film. Great memories. Fun for young teen and adults too ;-) Michael Penn does a tune on the soundtrack with his old band as well.

5 out of 5 stars This was my first song in a movie!.......2005-04-03

Great fun! Classic 80's teen movie. Long before I dated top actresses, had #1 hits and became a friend to nearly every star from Hollywood to London, I used my birth name to write a song for this film. Great memories. Fun for young teen and adults too ;-) Michael Penn does a tune on the soundtrack with his old band as well.
always happy to answer questions pertaining to this film. just email me.

A weak, lazy comedy about an easygoing teacher (Mark Harmon, whose movie career never had the kind of trajectory that his TV work did) who is forced to teach--you guessed it--summer school. What's worse, he gets exactly the kind of kids you'd expect: the losers and slackers who are forced to make up the work they didn't complete during the year. He tries to duck work and let them fend for themselves. But in this mushy Carl Reiner film, the teacher offers some life lessons to his band of delinquents and--surprise, surprise--the kids impart a lesson or two to their teacher, as well. Harmon coasts through the film on his good looks, which are considerable. --Marshall Fine

2 out of 5 stars Pretty bad.......2007-05-30

This movie is so bad it's good. I'll admit it's kind of fun to watch because it's very campy but the story itself is ridiculous. Peter Coyote stars as a lunatic Army colonel who regularly forces his junior officers' wives to have clandestine sex with him in his own private bunker. Courtney Thorne Smith stars as the wife who has the guts to say no.

The story has no basis in reality and shouldn't be taken seriously, but I'll admit it kind of has a trainwreck appeal.
