Featuring three enjoyably "awful" movies from 1958-59, Cult Camp Classics, Vol. 1: Sci-Fi Thrillers</I> turns nuclear radiation into cause for celebration, especially if you enjoy movies with extra cheese. With the Cold War in full swing and society's worries blamed on the threat of nuclear annihilation, sci-fi buffs (like future filmmakers Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and John Landis) could see a new monster movie almost every week. Many of them came from Allied Artists, the low-budget B-movie production company (formerly Monogram) that rose from the ghetto of "poverty row" distribution to produce countless exploitation thrillers between 1946 and 1979. The '50s saw the rise of nuclear monster thrillers, and Allied popularized the trend with its own menagerie of giant, irradiated creatures. The key to Allied's success was its crowd-pleasing combination of exploitable ingredients, and what better way to combine sci-fi, sex, and horror than to unleash a towering babe with an attitude problem? That's exactly what Allied did with Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, a now-classic campfest in which a spurned wife (Allison Hayes) is irradiated by a glowing alien space-ball, grows to a height of (you guessed it), and exacts revenge upon her cheating husband (William Hudson). A year before she bared her shapely backside as Playboy's Playmate of the Month for July 1959, Yvette Vickers costars as Hudson's scheming mistress, giving the film an extra boost of sex appeal. With bargain-priced effects including a giant floppy-fingered hand, hilarious process shots, and cheesy models destroyed by the world's biggest bitch (for whom it is still possible to feel some sympathetic compassion), the movie's not as good as its celebrated poster (which now adorns movie-geek T-shirts around the world), but it's still a lot of fun.
The Giant Behemoth was director Eugene Lourie's obvious attempt to capitalize on his 1953 hit The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, starring a gigantic paleosaurus rising from the Atlantic with a bad case of atomic radiation. London is the monster's eventual stomping ground, but the lumbering lizard is camera-shy for nearly an hour; you can imagine Beaver Cleaver and his pals groaning through seemingly endless scenes of talky exposition, anxiously awaiting the climactic stop-motion creature effects supervised by the legendary Willis (King Kong) O'Brien. Scoring much higher on the camp-o-meter, and far more entertaining, is the cult classic Queen of Outer Space, which borrows props and costumes from Forbidden Planet, Flight to Mars and World Without End for its outrageously kitschy plot about manly astronauts who crash-land on Venus and discover an underground society of mini-skirted space-babes. Unfortunately the disfigured Venusian queen (Laurie Mitchell) is a man-hater supreme, so the spectacularly costumed Zsa Zsa Gabor (as a Venusian scientist, no less) leads a revolution against her. With a screenplay by Twilight Zone veteran Charles Beaumont and a story credited (almost incredibly) to legendary playwright/screenwriter Ben Hecht (who surely never suspected his idea would eventually yield this movie), Queen of Outer Space is exactly what you'd expect it to be: So bad it's good, and more than worthy of inclusion in this irresistibly priced triple-feature set. --Jeff Shannon
<b>On the DVDs</b>
Three feature-length commentaries accompany the sci-fi thrillers in Cult Camp Classics, Vol. 1. Two of the commentaries are hosted by Tom Weaver, a noted authority on sci-fi and horror films whose historical acumen is more casual than academic: While sharing the commentary on Queen of Outer Space with the film's titular star Laurie Mitchell (who became a mainstay at fan conventions at Weaver's invitation), Weaver fails to explain how the production came to use props and costumes from the classic Forbidden Planet, and that's a glaring oversight. He compensates as an amiable interviewer with the equally good-natured Mitchell, and it's a treat to hear them enthusiastically reading unfilmed scenes from the film's original screenplay. For the commentary on Attack of the 50-Foot Woman, Weaver is joined by the film's comely costar Yvette Vickers (another regular at sci-fi conventions), and their combined anecdotes provide an adequate oral history of this camp-classic production. Star Wars veterans and special-effects masters Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett provide the loose-and-lazy commentary on The Giant Behemoth, which consists mostly of Muren making sarcastic jokes about the film's glacial pacing. It's hardly the authoritative commentary that some fans might've hoped for, but Muren and Tippett are well-versed in special-effects history (Muren even owns the original stop-motion Behemoth creature model), and they share an infectious enthusiasm for the films that inspired them to excel in their profession. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
What a bargain!.......2007-06-08
If you enjoy 1950s campy B movies, then I don't see you going wrong here with this first set. For details just search each of the movie titles and you see each movie alone runs almost as much as this set and you will see from the reviews they are all kind of legends as far as the genre goes. They actually are some of the best of that period of B movies. I know I like all three of these in this set. I can say I compare the "50 ft Woman" to the "War of the Colossal Beast" and "The Giant Behemoth" to "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms". The last one with Zsa Zsa Gabor on the planet of women is not to be missed if nothing more than to see how far we had plunged into skimpily clad women with bad lines in B class SciFi moviedom. Hmmm does B stand for bad? Well even if it does these movies are entertaining for most fans of science fiction. I ordered my set immediately.

Amazon.com essential video
After dominating the teen-movie genre for the bulk of the 1980s, writer-producer (and sometimes director) John Hughes proved that he had at least one good movie left in him before squandering his talent on lame comedies throughout the 1990s. Like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful treated its teenaged characters like real people with real feelings, hopes, fears, and desire. Mary Stuart Masterson gives a great performance as a tomboy drummer named Watts who's secretly in love with her best friend, Keith (Eric Stoltz), an aspiring artist who is oblivious to her affection because he's got a crush on Amanda (Lea Thompson), the popular high school beauty. Watts will even go so far as to chauffeur a date for Keith and Amanda, if only to prove--after a lot of patient, emotional anguish--that she's better for Keith than Amanda could ever be. The movie's drama comes from Keith's gradual realization that there's more to love than surface attraction, and Hughes gets extra mileage out of the romantic confusion by allowing Thompson's character to be more than a shallow campus cutie. All three of the leads are good fits in their roles, and this was one of the few teen films of the '80s to add genuine depth to its mainstream appeal. It's one of the few John Hughes movies to stand the test of time. --Jeff Shannon
Description
A young tomboy, Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson), finds her feelings for her best friend, Keith (Eric Stoltz), run deeper than just friendship when he gets a date with the most popular girl in school, Amanda, (Lea Thompson). Unfortunately, the girl's old boyfriend, Hardy (Craig Scheffer), who is from the rich section of town, is unable to let go of her, and plans to get back at Keith.

One of my all time favorite's!.......2007-06-12
This movie is soooo AWESOME! I grew up a tomboy, had several guy friends and one I had a crush on. I've loved this movie since it came out all those years ago. Some Kind of Wonderful - Really is wonderful!.......2007-06-08
This movie has been a favorite of mine since it first came out. The characters are very well done and the actors perfectly matched to character. The music blends well. In the CD, the special features enhance the enjoyment with interviews of the actors and director in current time. I thought for awhile this film was out of print and was very excited to be able to purchase it!
Timeless classic.......2007-05-13
In this great high school through back does the guy get the girl, he gets the right one. He gets the no-so- popular one who has stuck by him. He also teaches the popular girl to be down to earth. And the jerk gets his in the end...by a girl and a bad guy. Just what high school should have been.
Some kind of wonderful.......2007-05-12
This movie is a very good teenage love story. I always get goosebumps when i wacth the movie. The actors are great and the stroy of two friends falling for each other is wonderful. If you like chick flicks then this one is a must.

Shirley Temple America's Sweet heart Collection, Vol. 1.......2007-06-13
I have always loved the Shirley Temple movies and enjoyed sharing them with my 3 older children when they would come on TV. I now have a 5 year old little girl and I love being able to buy these movies on DVD now. My daughter loves them as much as I do and goes around singing some of the songs from them sometimes. In Vol. 1 her favorite movie was "Heidi", she was on the edge of her seat most of the time hoping that "Grandfather would find Heidi. I highly recomend the whole collection!
The Shirley Temple Vol. 1.......2007-05-25
Great product very pleased with it would buy from Amazon again.
If you like Shirley Temple, you'll love these movies........2007-05-14
This volume includes all of the movies mentioned. Each DVD allows you to select whether you would like to watch it in black and white or color. My nephew who is a fourth grader actually really liked it, so I think that makes it wonderful. It's cute, really clean, and has lots of singing. If you look for movies like that, you'll love this collection. I have all of the volumes and recommend them all. The picture and sound quality are great!!!

A textbook example of '50s-era science fiction, <I>Earth vs. the Flying Saucers</I> boasts not only a solid script and competent performances, but some genuinely impressive stop-motion effects courtesy of one of the industry's uncontested masters, Ray Harryhausen. Scientist Hugh Marlowe (who faced a more benevolent invader from space five years earlier in <I>The Day the Earth Stood Still</I>) discovers that UFOs are responsible for the destruction of a series of exploratory space rockets launched by his space exploration project. The saucers' helmeted pilots land on Earth and deliver an ultimatum to humanity via Marlowe: fealty or complete annihilation.
Harryhausen's painstakingly intricate saucers and the destruction they wreak (particularly during an assault on Washington, D.C.) are the film's unquestionable highlights, but Marlowe and Joan Taylor (as his wife/partner) are capable leads, and veteran B director Fred F. Sears doesn't let the dialogue and expositional scenes fall apart in between the barrage of effects. <I>Earth vs. the Flying Saucers</I> is a fun and effective slice of sci-fi that should please younger audiences as well as nostalgic return viewers. Sears later reused some of the effects footage for his jaw-droppingly awful 1957 effort, <I>The Giant Claw</I>. <I>--Paul Gaita</I>
Customer Reviews:
Cool Popcorn, Coke Movie.......2007-05-24
Very good movie for a friday-late-night cuddling with popcorn & coke on a quiet, lonely wintery evening.
Its nicely directed, the special effects are good for that time, and the technology is cool for that time.
Only regret it is not in color.
Saucer Mania.......2007-05-13
I've seen almost every 50's sci fi movie in a movie theater when I was a kid. Yet, I never saw this one. I was very interested to see how much I'd like it.
It's better than I anticipated. The special effects are very good. Some great Harryhausen effects touches. The plot is fairly interesting, yet far from classic. I found myself enjoying it alot. It's one of the better B movie 50's sci fi's.
The DVD is definitely worth getting and watching.
Low-budget fun!.......2007-04-09
The plot of a flying saucer invasion is somewhat overdone, yet this movie is a unique addition to the collection of such films. Harryhausen's spaceships are very cool looking, and the plot was a lot of fun. This is a must-see for campy fifties sci-fi lovers.
Great for Its Time.......2007-04-03
Make no mistake, this is a cheesy 1950's style science fiction movie in which aliens are invading and a prominent US scientist is singled out to be a sort of liaison. The invaders are from a dying planet. They seek the help of the scientist but are rather heavy handed about it. Also heavy handed is the response by the US military. This results in a real shooting war. Now the scientist must come up with a secret weapon that will allow earth to defend itself.
The story is only mediocre but it is not really bad. The acting is fair but not spectacular. What are great are the special effects done by Ray Harryhausen.
Harryhausen was noted for using stop animation and this was one of his earlier efforts. The effects would be nothing special today but, in their time, they were considered amazing. The destruction of Washington DC is nothing like that from INDEPENDENCE DAY but it does get the point across.
This is not great art but it is a trip down memory lane. Be sure to check out the special features on Harryhausen. They are worth the price of the DVD.
Great movie!.......2007-03-22
Great movie! I recommend watching this movie back-to-back with EARTH VS. THE SPIDER.

Customer Reviews:
You can't help but watch.......2006-08-04
Guilty, guilty, the guiltiest of pleasures. I have to admit (and I'm not in any way shape or form proud of this) I love this movie. Yeah, the plot is contrived. The acting, when it isn't over the top is almost painfully stilted and forced but it is just great fun. However, on the up side, Gail O'Grady spends half the movie in a tight fitting swim suit.
Don't expect a masterpiece. This movie is straight off the Lifetime Movie Channel so, of course, the schmuck husband (Midkiff) is a no damn good cheating liar. This guy has almost no redeeming qualities at all. And his stupidly transparent efforts to juggle a clingy wife (O'Grady) and his new girlfriend (Rinna) are so inept you just can't help but get sucked in.
This movie is good fun to watch, especially on a rainy weekend when you have an hour or two to kill.
Another Woman's Husband.......2006-08-03
I love Lisa Rinna. Two best friends find out they are in love with the same man has to be heart breaking. They learned something from one another.
Nothing.......2005-12-31
Bad Movie, Bad action and you don't get to see almoust anything....
tho words : money waisted
Typical TV Movie.......2004-04-26
It is indeed. A boring housewife/swimming instructor, Gail O'Grady, makes friends with a Psychologist, Lisa Rinna (you know, the one with the lips) while teaching her to swim as she tried to come to terms with her brother drowning years before (phew). However, Rinna is dating O'Grady's husband, Dale Midkiff, in his usual husband gone bad role.
O'Grady is very good, Rinna is her usual stilted self and Midkiff plays his part admirably. Not a bad story. Both find out about each other and, in typical feminist style which really belongs to the early 90s, they kick the husband into touch, telling him to hit the highway while they go back to being best chums.
Not bad, but not really worth buying unless you're a bit fan of the three leads. Although saying this, would you kick Dale out of bed for eating potato chips? No, I didn't think so.
Lisa Rinna & Gail O'Grady share the same man (w/o knowing)!.......2002-04-27
Lisa Rinna and Gail O'Grady become best friends..not realizing that they share the same man! Both women perform very well in this movie...I have been a big fan of both of them since Melrose Place and NYPD Blue. Sally Kirkland also does a great job in this movie as Gail O'Grady's mother. This movie is filled with so many different ingredients: intrigue, lessons on overcoming fears, and it helps one become stronger in believing inside what can truly make your life happy. I've seen it a few times, and enjoy it more each time.

Cinema veteran Monte Blue (Orphans of the Storm) plays the sheriff. <P> ROBIN HOOD OF THE PECOS (1941) - Roy is a former Confederate soldier who has become a sort of Western Robin Hood and winds up becoming sheriff as he battles corrupt carpetbaggers. Cyrus Kendall (Crime School) is the main bad guy. <P> SHERIFF OF TOMBSTONE (1941) - In a change of pace, Gabby plays a judge who helps Roy clear his name after being mistaken for a ruthless gunslinger. Addison Richards (Boys Town) is Tombstone's corrupt mayor. <P> Disc Three <P> *HEART OF THE GOLDEN WEST (1942) - Roy, Gabby, Frog Millhouse (Smiley Burnette) and the Sons of the Pioneers help a group of ranchers who are being unjustly taxed for transporting their cattle. To circumvent the tax, Roy convinces an old riverboat captain (Walter Catlett of Bringing Up Baby) to let the cows ride down the river. <P> KING OF THE COWBOYS (1943) - Roy goes undercover to stop a gang of saboteurs who have been blowing up government warehouses to aid the Axis powers during World War II. Russell Hicks (The Bank Dick) plays the governor of Texas and Peggy Moran (The Mummy's Hand) is the damsel in distress. <P> *SILVER SPURS (1943) - Roy comes to the aid of a young widow who is being swindled out of her ranch by an unscrupulous opportunist (John Carradine of The Grapes of Wrath). Jerome Cowan (The Maltese Falcon) also appears and Trigger really gets a chance to strut his stuff in this one. <P> THE YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS (1944) - Roy goes undercover as an insurance investigator to solve a payroll robbery in this murder-mystery change-of-pace story. Dale Evans, in one of her first roles opposite Roy, plays the daughter of an escaped convict! <P> Disc Four <P> *HOME IN OKLAHOMA (1946) - Roy and Dale - in a sort of Western version of Tracy and Hepburn - are rival reporters trying to beat each other in getting the scoop on the murder of a millionaire rancher. Frank Reicher (Captain Englehorn in King Kong) appears as a lawyer. <P> MY PAL TRIGGER (1946) - Roy is unjustly blamed in the shooting death of Gabby's horse. Popular character actor Jack Holt (San Francisco) is the actual shooter. This film was reportedly a personal favorite of Roy's. <P> ROLL ON TEXAS MOON (1946) - Roy tries to stop a vicious range war between sheepherders and cattle ranchers that has been intentionally started by an unscrupulous businessman (Dennis Hoey, better known as Inspector Lestrade in the Sherlock Holmes series). <P> *APACHE ROSE (1947) - Roy is an oil prospector whose attempts to gain the drilling rights to a prize piece of land are thwarted by a gang of ruthless gamblers who operate from an offshore boat. George Meeker (The Roaring Twenties) leads the gambling gang. <P> THE BELLS OF SAN ANGELO (1947) - Roy is a border guard who suspects (correctly) that is smuggling silver out of a Mexican mine and "planting" it in his own worthless silver mine! John McGuire (Sands of Iwo Jima) is the culprit, and movie favorite Andy Devine (Stagecoach) plays the sheriff! <P> Disc Five <P> SPRINGTIME IN THE SIERRAS (1947) - Roy tries to stop a gang of poachers from killing deer in violation of local hunting regulations and winds up locking horns with the leader of the gang - who happens to be a very attractive woman (Stephanie Bachelor from Lady of Burlesque). Once again, Andy Devine plays the sheriff, and old timer Chester Conklin plays an Old Timer. <P> THE GAY RANCHERO (1948) - Sheriff Roy tries to stop a gang of crooks from taking over an airport by sabotaging the planes. Crooner Tito Guizar (Mexico's version of the singing cowboy) plays an ex-bullfighter who comes to America to find the girl of his dreams. <P> GRAND CANYON TRAIL (1948) - A gullible sheriff (Andy Devine again) is duped into investing in a worthless silver mine. Jane Frazee (Buck Privates) is the comic female foil, while Laurel and Hardy nemesis James Finlayson (Way Out West) plays another sheriff. <P> THE FAR FRONTIER (1948) - Where else can you see Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Annie Oakley and Jingles Jones, all in one movie? That's because Clayton Moore (The Lone Ranger), Gail Davis (Annie Oakley), and Andy Devine (The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok) join Roy in this timely story about the smuggling of illegals from Mexico into the U.S. <P> UNDER CALIFORNIA SKIES (1948) - Roy plays singing-cowboy movie star "Roy Rogers" in this "backstage" story about the celebration of Roy's ten years in movies, spoiled by the sudden kidnapping of Trigger. Child star Michael Chapin (Call Northside 777) is caught up in the danger. <P> * First Time on DVD

In 1992, <I>The Lawnmower Man</I> was hailed as a CGI (computer-generated image) breakthrough. It's fascinating to consider it in a historical context, knowing it came just a year after <I>Terminator 2: Judgment Day</I> and was followed by <I>Jurassic Park</I> a year later. Written and directed by Brett Leonard, <I>The Lawnmower Man</I> focuses on a scientist (Pierce Brosnan) trying to utilize technology for governmental gain. As with all top-secret government projects in the movies, it goes horribly wrong. Forced to progress from a chimp to a human subject, Brosnan secretly recruits local backwards boy and lawnmower pusher Jobe (Jeff Fahey). The increases in intelligence are alarming. He learns Latin in two hours, becomes an object of sexual desire (apparently all it takes is cowboy boots), and then develops telepathic and telekinetic abilities. What the film ought to be remembered and appreciated for are the visuals, which undoubtedly advanced the arcade and home computer game industry. <I>--Paul Tonks</I>

Where is the Director's Cut?.......2007-04-25
When this movie was first released on VHS I immediately noticed an inconsistancy. When you looked at the length of the movie on the video case it had the same length as is listed on amazon at 108 mins. However if you actually sat down and watched the VHS release, it was actually about 2 1/2 hours long. Then I bought myself a VHS copy of the film and again I found that it was a version far longer than indicated on the video case. When I bought this movie on DVD it again said that the movie was 108 minutes long, I assumed it was the same as the VHS had been with the same inconsistancy. I was very wrong. When I watched the DVD, it was not an extended or a director's cut of the film. It was the original 108 minute theatrical release of the film. I was so disappointed to see so much footage cut away from the film which I had seen on the VHS release, that I returned the DVD right away to where I had purchased it from. I am keeping my VHS copy of this film, and I am waiting for the extended director's cut to be released on DVD before I buy it in that format. If anyone knows anything about this, let me know.
Lawnmower Man .......2007-04-08
If you haven't seen this you should. Great movie. Never get tired of seeing it. I think any age could watch this.
Excellent movie! Great graphics for it's time!.......2006-11-19
'The Lawnmower Man' was an excellent, well made, entertaining sci-fi film on the subject of virtual reality and artificial brain enhancement gone wrong. It's pathetic that so many reviewers dis the film's graphics and effects, based on a comparative basis with recent technology and modern graphics. People, this film came out in 1992, not 2006! These WERE state-of-the-art graphics 14 years ago. Why compare? In any case, ignore the naysayers, and rent or buy this DVD. You won't regret it!
SHORT STORY AND MOVIE?? NOT THE SAME 'CUT'..........2006-04-29
I'm not going to do a synopsis of this movie since many reviewers already have... But I would like to point out one thing... The short story and the movie are to be related in the title name only... The content of the short story and the movie are so vastly different, one wonders why Mr. King's name is even associated with this movie except maybe for the title credit only... The short story and the movie are good in their own individual way but in no way shape or form can be compared to each other... I would think that if one were to see the movie and than take time to read the short story, one would see my point... I applaud the movie for it's own take on the story yet there is still very little relation... The lawn mower is the 'bad guy' in the story while the lawn mower man turns 'bad' during the course of the movie... Both are pretty good just different...
Virtual reality empowed the lawnmower man, and it can work for you as well.......2006-04-09
This movie inspired me.
It has beautiful computer-generated visual special effects.
The plot is about a guy who is not very smart. But he plugs into a virtual reality world and he becomes intelligent.
He tries all possible ways to gain access and finds a back door that allows him to ring all the phones in the world.
In a way, you can do the same thing with the internet.
You can find information about all things in life that interest you and become empowered, more intelligent and successful.
I strongly recommend this movie.

"It's Hep! It's Hot! It's Hilarious!" reads the tagline for <I>Orchestra Wives</I>, a frothy slice of celluloid made in 1942 and featuring the great Glenn Miller Band. And that tagline is, well, sort of true. As is often the case with films of this genre (musical comedy with the occasional touch of drama), the story is largely superfluous: a naïve, smalltown girl (Ann Rutherford) falls for a fast-talking, smooth-playing trumpeter (George Montgomery); he proposes after spending, oh, about fifteen minutes with her (and before he even knows her name); she joins the band on tour, where the female members of the troupe, wives and singers alike, while away the downtime gossiping and rumor-mongering; trouble ensues, but all ends happily (and predictably). The main attraction here is seeing Miller (going by the <I>nom du cinema</I> Gene Morrison), then at the height of his popularity, and some of his fine musicians in action. Though not an innovator on the level of Benny Goodman and some of his other peers, Miller had a band that could swing like mad, and performances of tunes like "At Last," "Kalamazoo," and the rockin' "Bugle Call Rag" are a definite gas. The musicians are virtually all uncredited, but they include singer Marion Hutton, saxophonist-singer Tex Beneke, singer Ray Eberle, and the great drummer Moe Purtill (also look for Jackie Gleason, the Great One himself, in a substantial role as the band's bass player), as well as the Nicholas Brothers, an amazing dance team. The black & white transfer is nice, the music has been remastered in stereo, and the fact that Miller disappeared during a plane flight over the English Channel in late 1944 makes <I>Orchestra Wives</I> (which includes a commentary track by Rutherford and Fayard Nicholas, along with a photo gallery) something of a collector's item. <I>--Sam Graham</I>
Description
A new bride faces the strain of life on the road in this musical romance that features the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Miller is featured as band leader Gene Morrison, who embarks on a whirlwind national tour with his orchestra. While on the tour, trumpeter Bill Abbott (George Montgomery) impulsively marries one of his many ardent fans, a naïve young women named Connie (Ann Rutherford). At first Connie is more than willing to put up with such problems as not spending time with her new husband and the malicious gossip of other wives. But when she comes to believe that Bill is still involved with an old flame, the ensuing quarrel threatens to end both the new marriage and the entire band.
Customer Reviews:
A promise of restored stereo falls flat.......2007-05-16
I won't go over the plot summary as many others have done so very well. A little audio history first:
Glenn Miller was an excellent band leader in the late 30's and early 40's and a proponent of using whatever the best available technology to create recordings of his incredible orchestra. His reputation for great sound was not just pulling together some of the best musicians of the period but also using early mulitrack recordings to capture his band's unique sound as faithfully as possible in the early 40's. This predated magnetic tape by several years. To do a multitrack recording in those days involved mastering to a multitrack optical recorder to capture each instrument section with fidelity pretty close to magnetic tape. Of course, back then, the final release audio for a film would be mixed down to a mono track printed optically on the film. The final quality of that mixed track would not be too good by today's standards but the original elements can be remixed on modern audio equipment to recreate a pretty good wide soundstage stereo image far exceeding the quality of old mono 78 RPM discs of the day. Back in 1992, Fox released a remastered version of Orchestra Wives and they took the trouble to find and remix the original multitrack optical tracks to create a good stereo soundtrack for their Laserdisc release. The sound was great on the band numbers with a full wide soundstage and crisp fidelity rivaling anything made years later.
Now, here's where I'm disappointed. I have the 1992 laserdisc and just got the new DVD release a few days ago. When I fired up the DVD, the audio sounded flat and dull. I checked the menus and found it had defaulted to the English Mono track so reset it for English Stereo. I tried again and it still sounded poorly equalized and lacking in the clarity and soundstage I was used to from the Laserdisc. On the Laserdisc, the dialog scenes are typical mono optical audio, limited bandwidth and pure mono. When the scene cut to a band performance, you could immediately hear the sound quality change to wide stereo with improved bandwidth and clarity in the highs. On the DVD, even the dialog tracks have a (fake) stereo effect added in so what I suspect is they took the mono track off the film print and passed it through a processor to add reverb to create a fake stereo effect. But if you play the Laserdisc and the DVD simultaneously and switch back and forth between the two, it is readily apparent the DVD tracks are not real stereo. They have the typical high frequency cutoff of an old optical release mono track.
Shame on Fox for this one. They have all the elements to do it right and to give the Glenn Miller Orchestra and their fans the kind of respect and treatment they deserve. Instead, Fox has taken the easy (and cheap) way out and created a fake.
Ann Rutherford shines in second-string Fox musical.......2007-04-21
The second movie to feature Glenn Miller and his Band (following 1941's "Sun Valley Serenade"), ORCHESTRA WIVES is a charming musical comedy, filled with one-line zingers and classic musical memories, not to mention an Oscar-nominated song.
Small-town gal Connie (Ann Rutherford) quickly meets and marries Bill Abbot (George Montgomery), trumpet player for the touring Gene Morrison Band (played by the Glenn Miller crowd). Connie joins the gang on tour, and comes up against Bill's old flame--and band singer--Jaynie (Lynn Bari). You can pretty much guess the rest. This is a lightweight musical comedy with plenty of sass and sparkle.
Ann Rutherford had just come to the end of her longterm contract with M-G-M (where she appeared as Careen in "Gone with the Wind", Lydia in "Pride and Prejudice", and Polly Benedict in the "Andy Hardy" franchise). Rutherford never found the same kind of fame (or roles) with Twentieth Century-Fox, and she retired seven years later. George Montgomery's career virtually ended after he was called up for World War II service shortly after this film, and he later floundered in B-movie territory ("Belle Starr's Daughter", "The Pathfinder", "Robber's Roost").
Lynn Bari steals this film with her catty performance as Jaynie. She's the epitome of the fast-talking, no-nonsense dame, and gets the lion's share of zingers; though her singing was dubbed--and obviously so--by Pat Friday.
Glenn Miller's Band performs several of their classic standards, joined by Tex Beneke and The Modernaires ("Serenade in Blue", "At Last", and the introduction of "I've Got a Girl in Kalamazoo", which was Oscar-nominated). The cast of ORCHESTRA WIVES also includes Mary Beth Hughes, Carole Landis, Cesar Romero, Jackie Gleason, Virginia Gilmore and The Nicholas Brothers (who perform a brief dance specialty at the very end of the film).
Entertaining Fox musical comedy with Glenn Miller Orchestra.......2006-04-20
I dont really think this movie deserved to be marketed on DVD as a "Fox Studio Classic." This 1942 showcase for the Glenn Miller band is amusing and well-made, but a minor entry in the musical comedy genre by Twentieth Century Fox.
The flimsy plot concerns Connie (Ann Rutherford), a small town girl who falls for Bill (George Montgomery), a trumpet player in the Glenn Miller Orchestra. They marry immediately, but problems ensue courtesy of a group of catty "orchestra wives" and the band's lead female singer (Lynn Bary), who tries to regain the affections of Bill, her former boyfriend, leading to the dissolution of the band.
The cast is serviceable, but unremarkable. Ann Rutherford and George Montgomery are attractive and play their parts well, but they lack the charisma of Fox's leading musical stars, like Alice Faye and Betty Grable. They're easily upstaged by the underrated Lynn Bari as the rival, Fox staple Cesar Romero as a womanizing pianist, and Carole Landis as a catty "orchestra wife".
The main reason to watch this film is to hear the musical numbers by the Glenn Miller Orchestra (all of them great) and also to see the superb dancing specialty number by the Nicholas Brothers (who sadly appear only once almost at the end).
Hot music, jiveCats n' Zootsuits!.......2006-03-31
starring the fabulous Glenn Miller Band -
i've played in Rock, Blues & CW bands & gotta say:
if you love music you've got to see this!
OW starts with a "band rehearsal", i almost fell out of my chair
when the gorgeous Marion Hutton sang w/ the boys in
"People like US", rich 40's Big Band harmonies-Yay!
so many good songs(shot "live") & the ~great~ Tex Beneke singing
"I got a Gal from Kalamazoo" with the Nicholas Brothers doing an
astounding "bounding off the walls" dance number.
Glenn plays the leader of this traveling Swing band, he
wasn't an actor-he just played himself(which works best);
a laid-back workaholic,it's a joy to see & hear his band,
back when they were establishing New Frontiers in music!
The film's storyline is tailored around the GM Band"s performances & is filled with an cast
of some of our favorite early 40's stars like:
handsome George Montgomery,perky Ann Rutherford,
classy Lynn Bari, blonde cutie Mary Beth Hughes.
Early roles for Jackie Gleason & Harry Morgan also!
but the 2 most interesting stars in this film are:
Cesar Romero - back when he was the most
handsome HepCat around town. When i think "Zootsuit",
Cesar comes to mind; he's great!
& beautiful Carole Landis as the "bitchy" band wife,
sexy & glamorous with a voice like honey;
Hollywood's never seen a woman
as gorgeous as Carole since!
You'd enjoy this film for the music(mostly) but it also
offers enjoyable glimpses of some of the best "musical/comedy"

Glenn Miller movie gives the orchestra full musical numbers.......2006-03-24
Don't buy this one for plot, but enjoy the period music by one of the best musicians of the era. This Glenn Miller vehicle allows the orchestra to play without voice-over interuption. Lots of great music throughout. And, towards the end, there is a bonus performance by the fabulour Nicholas Brothers. Their acrobatic tap-dancing is a highlight of the film.

Customer Reviews:
this film will make u sleep..........2007-03-30
i was very disapointed when i watch this film,i was using fast-forward all the time and i didn't find any good sex scene..
nothing was special here,..i just love to see a beautiful woman who played as the receptionist in the office (i don't know her name) but she didn't do any sex scene or nude scene...
save your money, the cover is hotter than the movie.
Best softcore title available.......2007-03-08
Finally a decent softcore DVD with a story and pretty good production values. Maverick Entertainment distrubuted it and its the first film from the Rock Candy Productions. Jamie Sweet, the tarty secretary, is the best thing about it. Great body, she's a Miss. Nude Pennslyvania. She has four romps including a good bedroom escapade with porn dude Dale Dabone. Kelly Brown who's done some Skinamax episodes on Sexapades at Cabo and Hollywood Sexapades, is the female lead. Brown teams up with Alana Evans and her real hubby Chris Evans to take down the cheats.
