"The Bride" (Uma Thurman) gets her satisfaction--and so do we--in Quentin Tarantino's "roaring rampage of revenge," <I>Kill Bill, Vol. 2</I>. Where <I>Vol. 1</I> was a hyper-kinetic tribute to the Asian chop-socky grindhouse flicks that have been thoroughly cross-referenced in Tarantino's film-loving brain, <I>Vol. 2</I>--not a sequel, but Part Two of a breathtakingly cinematic epic--is Tarantino's contemporary martial-arts Western, fueled by iconic images, music, and themes lifted from any source that Tarantino holds dear, from the action-packed cheapies of William Witney (one of several filmmakers Tarantino gratefully honors in the closing credits) to the spaghetti epics of Sergio Leone. Tarantino doesn't copy so much as elevate the genres he loves, and the entirety of <I>Kill Bill</I> is clearly the product of a singular artistic vision, even as it careens from one influence to another. Violence erupts with dynamic impact, but unlike <I>Vol. 1</I>, this slower grand finale revels in Tarantino's trademark dialogue and loopy longueurs, reviving the career of David Carradine (who plays Bill for what he is: a snake charmer), and giving Thurman's Bride an outlet for maternal love and well-earned happiness. Has any actress endured so much for the sake of a unique collaboration? As the credits remind us, "The Bride" was jointly created by "Q&U," and she's become an unforgettable heroine in a pair of delirious movie-movies (<I>Vol. 3</I> awaits, some 15 years hence) that Tarantino fans will study and love for decades to come. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Uma Thurman, swords, kung-fu,& Quentin Tarrentino ... how can you go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars "That woman deserves her revenge... and we deserve to die.".......2007-06-01

All grown men have a little boy in their heart that still surfaces for playtime every now and again...some fellows more so than others, and it's always so much fun to go back. That is one of the many reasons I enjoy having a son waiting to greet me when I come home from a day of work or a long business trip. On the flip side, Quentin Tarantino gets to go back to being a boy every time he goes to work, and I say good for him.

The Kill Bill movies are a potent effusion of likely all the things Quentin grew up with. Westerns, Kung-Fu movies, Samurai movies and other action films that helped mold and create his robust imagination. Now, he can take the ideas that inspired him as a child and make them even better for the next generation of action-craving bloodthirsty little children. Kill Bill volume 2 is more than a derivitive tribute film, it is an elicitation of massive nostalgia, excentuated keenly by incredible dialogue. Other than function well as a conclusion to the series, it is actually quite different from Kill Bill volume 1 in a few ways. Kill Bill volume 1 contained mostly introductions, followed by bloody action as Beatrix Kiddo took on and took out Vernita Green, O-Ren Ishii, Go-Go Yubari and of course the Crazy 88 (yes, all 88 of them). But in Kill Bill volume 2, I felt like those were merely the supporting villains as Kiddo takes on the more resourceful and profound antagonists in this film; Elle Driver, Budd and of course Bill himself. The sequel, unintentionally perhaps as the two were written and filmed together, possesses more depth than the first part. There is more room for dialogue and that is of course a great thing because outrageous and unlikely dialogue is one of Quentin's strengths, and it serves here to make the characters even more unearthly and super-hero-like then in the first film.

Overall, in volume 2 we get to see how Beatrix learned her skills and we learn more about the relationship between her and Bill. It all leads up to an often criticized climax between Bill and Beatrix. Between the dialogue and David Carradine's performance, the climax helped me enjoy this film a bit more than volume 1. So, if you prefer action and violence you will like the first movie better, but if you just so happen to get caught up in the characters along the way and have an appreciation for the kind of concentrated cultural yearning crossed with mythical level characters that only a Tarantino film can deliver, then Kill Bill volume 2 is a great cap to the two films. For me, simply put, together they make one amazing movie.

5 out of 5 stars Vol 2 is better.......2007-05-27

You've seen vol 1 and thought do I really want to sit through another 2 hours of swords and kung-fu? Well vol 2 is the much better film, so the answer is yes.

Curiously enough although Vol 2 is longer, it seems to have a tighter construction. Some of the chapters are breath-taking, perhaps because they are shorter. The Pai-Mei chapter is simply marvellous. Uma Thurman gets her training with Pai Mei and Bill tells her "remember no sarcasm, no back-talk at least not for the first year or so, gonna have to let him warm up to you"! The Pai Mei chapter ties a lot of things together as well.

Oh yes in vol 2 we get to see Bill for the first time. David Carradine is great, very cool, and occasionally seems to become Kwai Chang Caine again all these years later.

I'd recommend seeing Vol 1 first, although it isn't quite as essential to do this, as it is to watch vol 2 after watching vol 1.

This is fabulous entertainment made by a master film-maker and I strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars kill bill vol. 2.......2007-04-19

i tend to bounce back-and-forth in my mind as to which half of the "kill bill" story i like better. as of writing this review, i'm going to have to go with "vol. 2", perhaps just because it's the one i've seen more recently, but i'm thinking there's more to it than that, so i'll try to get to those points instead.

first off, this really is like splitting hairs, picking which volume is better. now, believe all of those who point out how incredibly different the movies are because they are absolute night and day, but equally good and, more importantly, equally enjoyable.

i guess the one and only edge that i'd have to give "volume 2" is that the character's you get to spend time watching in this half (alongside the Bride, who is just as awesome here as in "vol. 1") are just more in-tune with what i like to see. for example:

-i LOVE the character of Bill, and found the scenes between he and the Bride to be among my favorite ever "ex-lover" face-off's in all cinema. they're is certainly a nastiness to the scenes, but you can SEE the two of them still deeply caring for another, despite themselves, esp. upon the conclussion of their showdown. it is just excellent.

-Michael Madsen's Bud is quite possibly the most difficult character to not like in any movie ever. despite his actions toward the Bride (no more detail. don't want to ruin anything in case you haven't seen it.), you just can't help but kinda feel for the guy. i mean, a dude that has to take junk off his boss, clean up nasty toilet water at a [...]-hole strip bar, then go home to his El Paso trailer to sit alone and listen to Johnny Cash records just kinda screams "feel bad for me" even if we really don't wanna. Bud is awesome, and i like having more of him, so yet another nod to "vol. 2".

-Pei Mei is freakin' awesome, esp. if you love the old kung-fu movies that the "kill bill" series was so lovingly created to replicate. awesome!

-Elle Driver is my absolute favorite member of the divas, so her being more prominant in this half alone makes me love it, love it, love it! just EXACTLY what a "bad guy" bad girl should be, man. all this, and the revelations made during the throwdown between she and the Bride just makes that fight (and the conclussion of said fight) SO much cooler it's just insane!

there is one more character in this movie that i thought was a really neat addition, but to talk about this is to REALLY ruin the movie, so just in case, i'll let you guys decide who you think belongs in this fifth spot.

overall, "kill bill" start-to-finish is outstanding in everyway, but i wanted to yack about "volume 2" today, so that's that. thanks for reading and enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars A Letdown.......2007-04-03

I liked the first volume, despite the fact that it was mostly plotless, because it was very pretty in all its carnage. Volume 2, however, spends a lot of time on a plot that bothered me more and more when I thought about it. In the end, I found it overly simplistic and irritating (trying not to give anything away here). I kept waiting for a twist that never came. While the first volume was mostly fluff, a lot of style with no substance, it was enjoyable as that at least. The second volume has more plot, but this does not end up as more substance. But in the second volume, the time that is spent on the plot takes away from the style and we end up with two and a half hours which are not very enjoyable.

Quentin Tarantino's <I>Kill Bill, Vol. 1</I> is trash for connoisseurs. From his opening gambit (including a "Shaw-Scope" logo and gaudy '70s-vintage "Our Feature Presentation" title card) to his cliffhanger finale (a teasing lead-in to 2004's Vol. 2), Tarantino pays loving tribute to grindhouse cinema, specifically the Hong Kong action flicks and spaghetti Westerns that fill his fervent brain--and this frequently breathtaking movie--with enough cinematic references and cleverly pilfered soundtrack cues to send cinephiles running for their reference books. Everything old is new again in Tarantino's humor-laced vision: he steals from the best while injecting his own oft-copied, never-duplicated style into what is, quite simply, a revenge flick, beginning with the near-murder of the Bride (Uma Thurman), pregnant on her wedding day and left for dead by the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad (or DiVAS)--including Lucy Liu and the unseen David Carradine (as Bill)--who become targets for the Bride's lethal vengeance. Culminating in an ultraviolent, ultra-stylized tour-de-force showdown, Tarantino's fourth film is either brilliantly (and brutally) innovative or one of the most blatant acts of plagiarism ever conceived. Either way, it's hyperkinetic eye-candy from a passionate film-lover who clearly knows what he's doing. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

The first, I really enjoyed... and the second didn't disappoint! Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars Love it or Hate it - I just happen to love it!.......2007-06-08

After reading the other reviews, good and bad, I just decided to chime in with my two cents.

To be quite honest, I love this movie. Tarantino must have had an amazing time making it, and that shows up in the final product. It's just fun to watch. It introduces those of us who aren't very familiar with the kung-fu genre to it and makes us want to go watch a bunch of them. Volume 2 does the same with spaghetti westerns. These movies are like a crash course in Grindhouse-type cinema. I noticed one reviewer who negatively critiqued the film commented on the black and white photography during the fight scene-Quentin had to do that to get it past the MPAA; the Japanese version is all color. Anyway, the movie was a blast, and if you can stop being a snooty cinephile for about 2 hours, you should have a blast too.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Not For Everyone However.......2007-05-29

My first viewing of this volume in the Kill Bill saga occurred at two in the morning, as I suffered from severe insomnia. I was desperate, hoping that it would help me drift off. Unfortunately, or rather, fortunately, this film did anything but. The action, cinematography, and witty script blew me away; I loved it. The next day, however, I was surprised to learn that many people I knew did not feel the same way as I did regarding this flick. Willing to form a better opinion of the movie and shrugging the fact that I loved it off to simply being overtired, I watched it again.

I still loved it. And herein was where I realized that this film is not for everyone. As it is a homage film, a tribute to Spaghetti Westerns and Kung-Fu flicks, one must look from this perspective. I myself enjoy these genres of film and lapped up Tarantino's unique and witty take on them. It is apparent (as it is in most of his work) that he is a great fan as well.

As mentioned numerous times by others, there is gore abound here. Ridiculous violence, blood spurting everywhere, and bodies flying constantly. But somehow Mr. Tarantino, and you may call him sick or twisted for it, made all the slicing and dicing humorous and never too serious, witty lines and funny visuals all the way through. True cinematic genius in my book.

On the surface it looks like a senselessly violent revenge movie, but underneath it is far more. Like most of Tarantino's films, Kill Bill is riddled with culture references and contains a wonderfully varied soundtrack; absolute joy for the pop culture buff. It is a cleverly written, and the wonderful talent of all involved is clearly exhibited.

On to the acting, Uma Thurman is a true standout. Prior to this film I hadn't thought much of her, even believing her to be overrated. This one role of hers changed my opinion completely. Thurman is brilliant as "The Bride"; her piercing eyes and intense persona portray a woman out for revenge amazingly. Lucy Liu is also impressive as a cold Yakuza headlady, and Vivica A. Fox and Daryl Hannah both provide great supporting roles as well.

Overall this film is most definitely not something that everyone will go for- in fact, most will find it odd for the first ten minutes or so, but stick with it. This film is one of the most brilliant in recent years, even though it might not hit you with its depth right away. Highly recommended.

**By the way, make sure to buy Volume 2 along with your purchase of Volume 1- the films were intended to be one but due to time constraints two were made, as you see them now. It will add for a more complete viewing experience, not to mention the cliffhanger at the end of the first.

5 out of 5 stars Is there ever going to be a deluxe director's cut version?.......2007-05-28

I've been waiting for the Director's Cut to be released so that I can see both films the way Tarantino originally imagined them....as ONE film!....Does anyone know if this is in the works??

1 out of 5 stars Over Appreciated..........2007-05-28

I felt as though Kill Bill was Quentin Tarantino's worst film. It seemed like a haphazard glorification of sadistic behavior. However, I do recommend the soundtrack -- otherwise, do not purchase this movie or its sequel.

Based on Robert Harling's play, this comedy-drama directed by Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) follows several years in the lives of women who regularly see one another at a beauty shop in their small Louisiana town. The story deepens as Julia Roberts, playing a serious diabetic and the daughter of Sally Field, goes downhill in her health. But as an ensemble piece, this is one of those enjoyably lumpy tearjerkers with many years' worth of stored truths suddenly being shared between the characters, lots of grievances aired, that sort of thing. Daryl Hannah and Shirley MacLaine assume the most eccentric roles, Dolly Parton the most fun, and Olympia Dukakis the most dignified, while Sally Field essentially provides the moral and emotional center of the movie. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Steel Magnolias is one of my very favorite movies. I am replacing my VHS tapes with DVDs and it was one of the first ones I replaced. I love the special edition DVD because it told the story of the writer's sister who died young. It gives the movie even more special meaning knowing that it's based on a real life situation rather than one that's completely fictitious. Five Stars!

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Movie!.......2007-05-26

This is one of my favorite all-time movies. It's set in Lousiana. Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Olivia Dukakis, Shirley Maclaine, Dolly Parton, and Darryl Hannah are the main stars of the movie. It starts out as a group of women in a beauty salon getting ready for Julia Roberts' character's wedding. We meet Darryl Hannah's character in the beginning as she comes by looking for work and a place to stay. The story goes over a period of time from Shelby's wedding to the birth of her son and her kidney transplant and her death. At the end of the movie, it shows Darryl Hannah's character heading off to the hospital to have her baby. During the movie, Darry's character went to beauty school, fell in love, got married, and became pregnant. Too bad that a sequel was not made.

5 out of 5 stars Endeering from beginning to end... don't miss it!.......2007-05-22

Steel Magnolias is a movie about family, love, and relationships. The plot revolves around a beauty parlor where the main characters go to become beautiful. The character of the beauty parlor owner is played by Dolly Parton.

At Truvy's Beauty Parlor in Louisiana we learn all about these close group of friends and soon learn the secrets these women carry in their hearts.

M'Lynn, played by Sally Fields is married to Drum Eatenton, a playful man who at the start of the film is busy shooting birds that are perched on a tree on his property. This drives us all crazy, especially those of us that firmly believe on the protection of the environment... but they have a very special reason as a motive.

Daughter of Drum and M'Lynn Eatenton, Shelby, superbly played by Julia Roberts is getting married and we soon see these women go to visit the beauty parlor in preparation for the big day. Annelle Dupuy Desoto, played by Daryl Hannah, has just joined the staff as a hair dresser, "a glamour technician," and soon the women are hard at finding all about "her past" because even though she is "the sweetest thing" just live through puberty and you must have a past.

Ouiser Boudreaux, a bitter, ill tempered and outspoken lady, played deserving of an award by Shirley MacLaine joins the women and she puts Annelle through a rather fun and entertainment interview.

Clairee, a recently widowed woman, played by Olympia Dukakis is the only person that truly understand Ouiser... and the give and take of these women is so endearing and captivating, that we soon find ourselves enchanted by this movie.

As the movie develops we find ourselves involved in the pain and heartache of the challenges these women face. We cried, we laughed, and we walked away wishing that our town would have the close relationships these families share. Indeed a movie worthy of becoming part of any collection. Don't miss it...

Adapted from the novel by Nicholas Sparks and transplanted from 1958 to the present day, this admirable teen romance recognizes that two 18-year-olds--Landon (Shane West) and Jamie (pop singer Mandy Moore)--can be smart, mature, and sensible about the very real love they share. He's a popular kid in the cool crowd. She's got a goody-goody reputation as the dowdy daughter of a local minister (Peter Coyote); her values and priorities aren't rooted in peer pressure, and Landon feels blessed by her self-assured nobility. Their mutual affection inevitably heads into <I>Love Story</I> territory, but the movie is honest enough to survive its own schmaltz, and its attractive cast (including Daryl Hannah as Landon's mom) embraces a tone of sincerity and mutual respect. Finally... a teen movie with teens you can admire. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars A heart-warming chick flick........2007-06-21

A Walk to Remember stars Mandy Moore and Shane West. I remember when it first came out, it was the "IT" movie to see. Even now, roughly 5 years after its initial release, teens are oogling not only over the eye candy, but also from the heartwarming storyline.

So what's this movie about? Basically, you have a popular guy, Landon, and a geeky girl, Jamie, who are obviously from completely different worlds. When the two are forced together due to a school play, things heat up between the two and they eventually fall in love. Unfortunately, something comes between them that tries to pull them apart.

So what's to like about this movie? First, I believe this was Mandy Moore's debut in acting. She does a pretty good job playing her role and Shane West does a superb job as usual. Second, this movie brings out a ton of different emotions. You feel sympathetic, you feel happy, you feel sad, and you feel the cockles of your heart warming up. A really good movie not only makes you think, but also strikes a chord with you and this movie certainly did. Third, this is just an overall entertaining film. If you've read the book, you know what's going to happen, but that won't stop you from enjoying the film.

And what's not to like? The storyline is nothing new. We've seen it with Never Been Kissed and She's All That. The ending is different from the majority of movies with the same storyline but it's still not a ground-breaking film.

If you're looking for a cute, chick flick-type movie to watch, this is a great example. But keep a tissue box handy. You might need it.

5 out of 5 stars Always Remembered.......2007-05-31

A very well written story of life in the high school years. Exactly as I remember it being when I was in school. From what Grandchildren say it still is.

5 out of 5 stars Love is like the wind. You can't see it but you can feel it........2007-05-25

A walk to remember is a story of Landon Carter, the rebellious trouble maker(Shane West)and Jamie Sullivan, the reverend's daughter (Mandy Moore), a quite good-natured girl but teased by Landon and his friends. When Landon finds himself playing the lead role in the highschool musical along side Jamie he turns to her seeking help with lines. As he spends more time with her the two become closer and closer. Jamie shares a list of life goals with Landon inspiring him to do more with his life. He begins his own list of goals. When he first learns Jamie has terminal leukemia he is shocked but then talks to his dad who pays for her home care. Landon helps Jamie complete many tasks from her list as she is too weak to do them herself. Jamie's number one is finaly completed when Landon and Jamie are married in the church where her parents were married. Jamie dies just one summer later but in that short time she had changed Landon's life.

This is one of my favorite movies! It has great charaters, story line, music, lesson...everthing about this movie is great!!! This is one of the very few movies I enjoyed more than the book!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-05-21

When i first saw this movie i was rather uneasy because most teen movie have sex and profanity, but this movie surprisingly had none of that! A very good movie for the whole family cause it teaches the real meaning of life and i liked that it had some God related parts that made me like it even more! I don't want to ruin the end for you but for sure it will make most of you cry! I cried more in this movie than in the Titanic which is famous as being a tear gerker. And you can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-04-09

this movie was incredible. it is for sure one of the most romantic movies i've ever seen. it is truely just an honest & heartwarming film. i recommend to all audiences!

Tom Hanks was a relatively unknown TV actor with a sitcom as his biggest credit when relatively unknown director Ron Howard (best known for his own sitcom acting) cast him in this surprise hit. It made stars of Hanks, Daryl Hannah, and John Candy and an A-list director out of Howard. Hannah is a mermaid who comes to Manhattan in search of Hanks, the guy she has twice saved from drowning. Hanks runs a business with his lovable blowhard brother (Candy), whose goal in life is to have a letter published in <I>Penthouse</I>. When this perfect woman shows up, Hanks can't believe his luck and plunges into a dizzyingly romantic relationship, unaware of her sea-water secret. But the mermaid needs to soak and unfurl her tail from time to time, which leads to complications, including her capture by the government for scientific study (what else?). Hanks is winningly charming and Hannah is a perfect match in this enjoyably high-spirited comedy, though the biggest laughs belong to Candy. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

5 out of 5 stars Splish Splash.......2007-05-24

This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I thought Daryl Hannah was the prettiest thing on earth and I wanted to be just like her. I used to swim in pools with my feet together and pretend I was a mermaid in the hopes that I could talk to marine life, sun myself on rocks, and be the object of mystery and myth. Seeing it again just recently with the commentary made it a new and wonderful experience all over again.

Tom Hanks, an unknown, in Ron Howard's directorial debut, plays Alan, a happless, somewhat bumbling EveryMan who was rescued by a mermaid as a child. He jumped off a boat in Cape Cod, and met the mermaid (later named Madison) underwater. Years later, she once again rescues him from drowning, and comes to New York City in search of him. As he and Darryl Hannah were unknowns, most of the heavy comedy routines were preformed by John Candy and Eugene Levy, who pay off everytime. Part of the hilarious and sweet nature of this movie is Madison's innocence in the meanest city in America, New York. Turning up naked at the Statue of Liberty and smiling so innocently at the crowd is just one of the hilarious scenes. Watching it again with the commetary is a wonderful experience, as they tell tales of near mishaps, story outline, and how they did the special effects (the mermaid tale). And even today, everytime I hear that a couple has named their new baby Madison, I remember that the name became so popular because of this movie.

This was made in an age where there was an E.T. formula for a lot of movies. In that the lead (Tom Hanks) takes on a poor, helpless creature and tries to introduce said helpless creature into their world. Eventually, like in E.T., an evil government force takes the helpless creature from the lead and they suffer. The lead rescues the helpless creature from the clutches of the evil government force, and releases them to their natural habitat. Unlike E.T., however, the lead goes with the creature. Perhaps because E.T. was a movie staring children characters and Splash was a movie with adult characters, but Ron Howard reveiled in their commentary that in the original ending Alan didn't go with Madison to the sea. But, his wife and others insisted to him that he had to change it and go with her.

Something that really hit home with me was something that John Candy said about love in this movie. Tom says to him that he was angry and disappointed that the woman he loved more than anything was a fish. People fall in love everyday, and look what he got! John Candy says "Oh yeah, look what you got! People fall in love everyday?! Most people will never be that happy! I'll never be that happy!". And that is certainly true. People throw things away. People make mistakes. And, the world's full of lonely people. Things don't always work out the way you want them to, especially with love. So what if the woman's a fish? Tom was pretty annoying too and she accepted him for what he was. Too bad some people don't feel the same way.

Enjoy it. Don't let this one get away.

4 out of 5 stars Such a good movie.......2007-04-11

This movie holds up good, and is timeless in so many ways. The DVD extras are resent and have background stuff you would not otherwise know about. Plus, that Daryl Hannah can swim like a fish.

4 out of 5 stars See it again!.......2007-03-30

I gave this to a nine year old godchild who is in love with mermaids. She was mesmerized! The movie still stands up today...a classic. I would give it five stars, except there weren't many extras in this DVD. I know that this movie originally was going to be longer because they had a lot more film of the underwater world of the mermaid that was left on the cutting room floor. Apparently, it's still there, because no deleted scenes made it to the DVD. Also, a word of caution if you are also planning on giving it to a young one...there are a few curses and adult language that I had forgotten about. Ooops. You might want to watch it first before you give it to your own kids.

5 out of 5 stars A Tom Hanks Classic.......2007-02-22

I bought this movies because I love Tom Hanks! And Daryl Hanna was a great match-up. I can watch this movie over and over. It's just a fun movie to watch when you need a comedic lift!!! AND not to forget ever John Candy & Eugene Levy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Perfection (once again)!!!.......2007-02-02

I waited awhile for this dvd to arrive, but was aware that it would take awhile. I was seriously expecting a used, battered copy, but this was brand new, not even opened, and I couldn't be happier. Well worth the wait!!!

If you have an appetite for Sicilian soapers, then you're like all those other people who made <I>Mario Puzo's The Last Don</I> the highest Nielsen-rated show for the week in mid-May 1997 when it originally aired. And who could blame you, since the story line of this TV miniseries is chock-full of all the familiar elements that make up a bestseller--power, money, sex, murder, gambling, madness, fame, Hollywood, loyalties made and broken. The story proper begins with a little <I>Romeo and Juliet</I> when Rose Marie, daughter of Don Domenico Clericuzio (Danny Aiello), falls for the youngest son of the warring Santadio family. On their wedding night, Rose Marie's new husband and the entire Santadio family are slaughtered by the Clericuzios to avoid further conflict between the two families, and Rose Marie goes completely insane and grows up to be Kirstie Alley. But not before she gives birth to another Santadio, Dante (so named because he has to live in Hell), in whom she invests all her hatred for her own family. So he grows up to be a psychotic hitman, played with sly and sadistic ingenuity by Rory Cochrane. The Clericuzios' chief executioner, Pippi (played with smooth aplomb by Joe Mantegna), is responsible for killing Rose Marie's husband, and wants his own son, metaphorically overburdened with the name "Cross," to follow in his footsteps. The sins of the fathers are visiting all over the sons in this picture, and naturally the two kids will have to resolve this inheritance. The acting is the main attraction here. Aiello in particular invests The Don with a stately grace that is just right. <I>--Jim Gay</I>

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Mafia Movie.......2007-06-09

I saw this on tv, and bought it as a gift to a Mafia fantatic, and he loved it!

5 out of 5 stars The Last Don by PK Reyes.......2007-05-13

Now this was a good Mafia Movie! Action, Action, and more Action. The acting was supuerb! Danny Aiello out done himself in this. This movie is about a mafia family, how father finally wanted the family to go legit. They were too far in to get out. Movie not for anyone under 13. The movie is rather long, but it won't matter because the action, drama, story keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time! This movie has a great group of actors. The movie is long, but the actions seems to never end. I tried to find this movie in the library, video stores, I had difficulty finding it. Oh I found the book, but I remember seeing the movie years ago as a mini series.Thank you Amazon for having it available. What other little treasures do you have??

3 out of 5 stars I've got space for this.......2007-04-26

Kept in suspense every minute. Danny Aiello finally displays his finer talent as the Don. Has the required skill. Kirsty Alley portrays dreadful hate and darkness toward the Don, the Clericuzio. Jason Gedrick, innocent from the start, a given for the future. Serious family business headed toward the flame. Ruthless to the point, perhaps wiser.
Never cross the Don. Ever.

2 out of 5 stars The Godfather it isn't...........2006-08-07

I remember this movie from when I was a kid...was a television min-series type deal. If you really like mafia movies, this one is adequate, but not spectacular. The characters come off almost goofy at times, and the acting is a bit over dramatic. It's certainly not close to Godfather quality...but taken for what it is, I've definitely seen worse movies too.

4 out of 5 stars Love "Godfather" type movies.......2006-07-04

I love these types of movies. To update the "Godfather" bring the family into the techno age, I like it.

Kids may enjoy the slapstick of this modern reworking of the old <I>Our Gang</I> comedies, but parents who grew up watching them on TV (or grandparents who saw them at theaters) will wonder why anyone would want to be involved in this pathetic remake. Directed by Penelope Spheeris, the film takes look-alike kids and casts them as Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, and the rest, minus any sense of what made the old Hal Roach comedies funny. Instead of kids being kids, these are kids doing shtick while recycling such old bits as the He-Man Woman Haters Club, the kids' go-cart race, and Spanky and Alfalfa dressing as girls. Devoid of charm or wit. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun for Kids of All Ages........2007-06-12

OK, yes, its a great movie for kids, but I think its even better for adults. Like all the great, classic "kids" humor (vintage Disney, Hanna-Barbera, Sponge Bob, etc.), its really targeted for adults, or at least I believe, you have to be an adult to get all of the fantastic humor.

This movie reminded me of my own kids at their funniest. The attitude seemed perfect. For this, I'm not sure who to credit other than Penelope Spheeris, but all of the kids acting in this movie seemed relaxed, fun-loving, and outrageously humorous. Not to take anything away form the "mature" actors - There were some fantasic cameos including Mel Brooks, Reba McEntire, Whoopi Goldberg, Darryl Hanna, George Wendt, and many others.

"If you were my children, I'd punish you."
"If we were your children, we'd punish ourselves."

"What is your bank account number?"
"Seven."
"Seven?"
"Four?"

"Quick! Call 911."
"But I don't know the number."
"Me neither."

When your kids aren't around, take it out, watch it yourself, and have a good laugh.

4 out of 5 stars Little Rascals review.......2007-06-02

I do Family Day Care and the children love this dvd. It has good comedy, especially when a couple of the boys get caught up in a ballet concert. The kids all have wonderful personalities and the antics they get up to, is entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Full of fun!.......2007-05-15

"The Little Rascals" has been my unrivalled favourite movie for the last ten years. I literally know it line by line and still have a good laugh everytime I watch it. It is the ONE movie that everyone in my family agrees on, so now that we are growing up and there's a new generation of kids coming along, I bought the DVD again so that they can be a true part of our family. Before agreeing to marry my fiancé, I had him watch the movie and I watched his response. Now I know that there's still a kid inside of him and the wedding is being planned. I couldn't marry someone who didn't admire Spanky's spunk and Alfalfa's audacity in bringing a GURL (yes, gUrl) into the clubhouse. This is a new classic and a must-have in your DVD collection!

In 1987, almost a hundred years after its first production, the romantic story of Cyrano de Bergerac found new life in a winsome film written by Steve Martin. <I>Roxanne</I> updates the tale with a smart '80s spin, yet writer-star Martin stays close to the old-fashioned heart of the matter. He plays a small-town firefighter named C.D. Bales, whose otherwise unremarkable existence is crowned by an amazingly long nose. He falls for the world's most beautiful astronomer (Daryl Hannah), but he is embarrassed by the size of his proboscis and prefers to stay on the sidelines. Like Cyrano, the shy C.D. instead helps a handsome friend (Rick Rossovich) woo the fair lady by providing flowery sentiments and soulful poetry. Not only does the story still work, but Australian director Fred Schepisi captures a dreamy grace in his visual design for the film (some of which will be lost without the widescreen format). Set in Washington State, but filmed in the hilly ski resort of Nelson, British Columbia, the location seems like a fairy-tale town, nearly as unreal as Steve Martin's nose. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

5 out of 5 stars Romantic Comedies Don't Come Much Better .......2007-06-07

"Roxanne," a 1987 film written by, and starring, the comic genius Steve Martin is yet another film from the fertile 1980's that more people should be happy to know. It's based on the 100-year old French play "Cyrano de Bergerac," by Edmond Rostand. And it costars the long-legged blonde Daryl Hannah, makes good use of Shelley Duvall, Fred Willard, and Michael J. Pollard in supporting roles, was directed by the talented Australian Fred Schepisi. It's set, supposedly, in a pretty Oregon skiing town; actually filmed in a pretty Canadian town; the cinematography presents us with many green and charming vistas.

Its plot follows the original. C.D.(Charlie) Bales (Martin), (note he's got the same initials as the original), is the intelligent, engaging fire chief of the small town; he's got quite a lot going for him, but also, unfortunately, an extremely prominent nose. But he's getting alone fine until astronomy student Roxanne (Hannah) comes to town on a cheap summer sublet. She falls for one of Bales's employees, dumb but handsome Chris (Rick Rossovich) in a big way; but, fortunately, she doesn't really go for dumb. Her friend Dixie (Duvall), tells her she wants Chris's looks with Charlie's brains. And, for a while, that's what she gets, as Charlie writes Chris's love letters and dictates his dialogue.

Many critics have lauded Martin's extraordinary gift for physical comedy, but you've got to see it to believe it. He opens the movie with an energetic strut across town, then has a wonderfully choreographed fight with two rude young male tourists: his tennis racket against their ski poles. He also spends a lot of time climbing up and around houses and trees; and falls down from a tree, claiming he was abducted by aliens, as per a puzzling scene in the original play. The movie also gets a gratifying amount of mileage out of Charlie's fire department: there aren't too many movies that give the viewer any feel for what a character supposedly does to make a living. One criticism: Dixie is not as young or beautiful as Roxanne, but does that mean she had to be turned into an asexual auntie type? Oh well. Romantic comedies don't come much better than this.

4 out of 5 stars Steve Martin was robbed!.......2007-05-31

Steve Martin deserved an Academy Award for "Roxanne", but Hollywood doesn't give Oscar to Comedians. At least he got nominated for a Glob(e). One of the great things about this movie is that there is no "bad guy" - you don't have to root for someone to go down in order for the hero to prevail.

5 out of 5 stars Roxanne.......2007-05-09

Funny, Funny!! This movie has so many one liners you will find yourself quoting them for days!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Steve Martin films.......2007-04-02

Steve Martin's LA Story and the remarkable Roxanne have to be the two best films from his huge body of work.

Having penned the screenplay, Martin cleverly adapts the Cyrano De Bergerac tale to a modern setting, however, manages to maintain the original story line and large personality of Cyrano in the character of C.D. Bales, a fire chief of a beautiful small town in the mountains of British Colombia.

C.D. Bales is an educated, romantic and modern swashbuckling man who can street fight and win with style, possess a sharp wit, can swing and climb rooftops with the agility of a cat and write poetry and love letters that will make any woman swoon with delight. Unfortunately, Bales like De Bergerac, has a nose the size of a small tree, resulting in his shyness in the matters of love.

C.D. falls head over heels for Roxanne, a visiting astronomer with alluring beauty and a keen mind but feels his appearance, a nose the size of Kansas, will prevent any relationship.

A handsome man, Chris, (Rick Rossovich) joins the fire station to help train the volunteer crew of town misfits but cannot talk to women. Bales' woos Roxanne through Chris with love letters and poetry, thus Chris wins her heart. This unusual situation turns complicated, (similar to De Bergerac) when the masquerade starts to come undone to hilarious results.

Australian director, Fred Schepisi, brings Martin's adaptation of De Bergerac together in an entertaining modern romantic comedy that even today, despite the dated soundtrack, continues to be funny.

Some movies deserve only to be seen once though Roxanne can be pulled from the cabinet and viewed time and again as it remains a classic tale of the 80's & the 18th century.

2 out of 5 stars Would be 5 stars, but............2007-06-12

First off, let me say that this movie is one of my all-time favorites. I was only 11 when I first saw it in theaters and I didn't quite "get it" at the time.

In my late teens, I revisited the movie again when it ran on cable and I was able to copy it onto video tape. With my slightly better educated teenage mind, I finally "got it". I had come to the conclusion that Blade Runner was a cinematic masterpiece.

The film was perfectly cast (many of the actors were relatively unkown at the time), the special effects were amazing (even rivaling some of today's effects standards), the costumes, sets, and lighting were extraordinary, the music (by Vangelis) was gorgeous and the cinematography was breathtaking.

So, why only 2 stars?

First off, the DVD transfer is horrible. It's not much better than the VHS copy I have. I know that the film was digitally remastered and re-released in late 2006, but I simply refused to buy it again because of my second point:

This is the director's cut. Call me crazy, but I much prefer the original theatrical version. I LIKED Ford's voice-over narraration. It reminded me of the classic detective serials. Crossing that over to the sci-fi genre was a brilliant move in my opinion.

The director's cut actually took scenes OUT (with the exception of Deckard's dream which gave a totally new interpretation of whether or not he was a replicant). Usually, a director's cut is LONGER and includes MORE scenes. Why go to all of the trouble to re-release a film if you're going to make it shorter and take scenes out? This was especially hard for me to take when Deckard's dream sequence replaced the scene where he is half-drunk and plinking away on the piano and we hear an alternate version of the beautiful "love theme". To me, that was an amazing scene and for some reason, Ridley Scott felt that he had to change or eliminate it.

Thirdly, the DVD contains no extras to speak of.

Rumors have been floating around for years that a definitive "final cut" of Blade Runner was to be released on DVD with a lot of extras and bonus features, including the original theatrical version, the director's cut and the final cut of the film. Due to legal problems and disputes, this never materialized.

Luckily, I found this movie for $2.50 in the bargain bin at a local store. Otherwise, I would not have paid any real money to own this movie, which is a real shame.

This film is a classic and deserves MUCH better treatment. Hopefully, 2007 (Blade Runner's 25th birthday) will prove to be the year that this definitve edition comes to fruition. If and when it does, I will gladly shell out my hard-earned money to own it.

Only time will tell.....

1 out of 5 stars DOES NOT HAVE EXTRA VERSIONS OF MOVIE BEWARE.......2007-05-19

VERY DISPOINTING SET HAS THE SAME DVD AVAILABLE ALL READY WITH JUST ONE VERISON, THERE WAS VHS VERSION THAT HAD THE NARRATION AND MORE GRAPHIC SCENES THAT WERE DELETED IN THE THEATRICAL VERSION FOR BEING TO GRAPHIC WHY CANT WE GET THIS VERSION ON DVD WHATS UP!

3 out of 5 stars interesting...........2007-02-18

I was very much conflicted over this movie. It is well directed and has depth to its themes but I had a hard time getting into this movie. At times the pace of the movie got so slow that it had a sedative effect on me. The backdrop of the futuristic world, is the real highlight of this movie. \

5 out of 5 stars Excelent film.......2007-01-17

I saw the film years ago, but this director's cut makes a big difference. I recommend Blade Runner to everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Ok dark future type movie.......2007-01-12

Harrison Ford was still hot after the Star Wars movies. Could never follow the "story" . Another overrated dark future beware of the evil robots movie done in noir style. Really, would anyone actually eat at one of those filthy outdoor noodle stands? And Harry always plays himself anyway. Skip this hokey, baloney crap and rent "The Day the Earth Stood Still" much better movie.

After the breezy successes of Grease and The Blue Lagoon, director Randal Kleiser made what can only be described as one of the greatest guilty-pleasure movies of all time. Summer Lovers is a bubble-brained movie if ever there was one, involving a love triangle between characters who have all the depth of a Calvin Klein commercial; but you don't care because the movie's so irresistibly alluring. Daryl Hannah and Peter Gallagher play a young couple vacationing in Greece when they meet one of the island locals, a gorgeous paleontologist (French actress Valérie Quennessen) who quickly proves that when it comes to love on a Greek island, three is better than two. This innocent flirtation endures a bit of ego-bruising animosity, but suspicion eventually subsides and blossoms into a sensuously delightful ménage à trois, accompanied by a soundtrack full of early-'80s pop by Chicago, Elton John, Blondie, the Pointer Sisters, and others. In addition to suggesting an interesting use of candle wax during foreplay and treating viewers to the vision of Ms. Quennessen cavorting topless whenever the impulse strikes her (and it strikes her frequently), Summer Lovers is like a time capsule from the earliest years of MTV. It's mindless entertainment, but on vacations like this, who wants to be an intellectual? --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Santorini.......2007-01-27

Who cares if the story is silly about a young American couple who go to Santorini, Greece for the summer and end up having a menage a trois with a young French Archaeologist ( Valerie Quennessen ). The movie is just a lot of fun and the scenery is spectacular. Will make you want to plan your next trip to Santorini. Too bad about Valerie Quennessen passing away years ago.

5 out of 5 stars ageless adventure in exploring one's life if you go with it.......2007-01-04

first viewed this 20 something years ago. what keeps me returning to it is what i saw as i kid that dared me to explore whats out there in the world. it explores sex, yes, it was filmed at a time whwn people didn't worry about AIDS., but more than this it has this urge to make you want to explore, go into the unkonwn, its ok. Yes i went to Greece that was 12 years ago. i've been discovering the world around me ever since. If you have money or not it doesn't matter. what matters is the confidence and possible humbleness we all have if we just detach ourselves and let ourselves have a moment(s) of clearity, enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Daryl Hannah's Best Work!.......2006-08-01

If you thought she was hot in Splash or Dancing at the Blue Iguanna, you've just got to see this film! This movie is all about being a free spirit and coming to terms with the complexity of our emotions and being able to overcome prior societal conditioning concerning right and wrong. As soon as they learned to just go with it, they were all so much happier and fully liberated. It's an early 80's film with a real 70's vibe. VERY cool. I also suggest a great Daryl Hannah film called Wildflowers.

4 out of 5 stars Adult Escapist Fun.......2006-02-04

How do you follow-up The Blue Lagoon? Nude adults on a Greek Island!

Michael (Peter Gallagher) and Cathy (Daryl Hannah) are childhood sweethearts. They have decided to go to a small Greek island for the summer. The location is exotic and makes the couple feel much freer than they normally would be. Then enter Lina (Valerie Quennesen) a beautiful French archeologist. Michael is taken by Lina but is with Cathy. Cathy meets Lina and they find that they have something in common. The three become a trio. Everything is going great until Cathy's mother (Barbara Rush) and good friend Barbara (Barbara Cook). This makes Lina think about the relationship and she decides to end it. Without Lina, Michael and Cathy decide to end their vacation.

This movie is beautiful. The cinematography by Dimitri Papaconstandis and Timothy Galfas is breathtaking. Director Randall Kleiser makes visual films in exotic locations. Yes the screenplay is slight but some films the visual is enough. And this is one of those films. Just sit back and enjoy!

DVD EXTRAS: None

5 out of 5 stars This film is more about friendship than about Threesomes and indulgence.......2005-12-27

I first saw this film on TV when I was in the 10th grade, I was at my friends house and it was on when I arrived, I asked him where the H___ is that, it is so beautiful. Anyway this film is really about friendship more so than about sex between a man and two beautiful women. Peter Gallagher is a great actor, I wish he was in more films today, he should be on the so called a lists.
Anyway when I finally went to Crete and Santorini in Aug 1990 and again 1991 it was even more beautiful than I thought. and so were the women.
I would love to see a sequel years later with the same actors to see how their lives turned out. There was nothing sleezy about this film at all despite what others may say. A great study in friendships and relationships
I would highly recommend this film to anyone.
