The Amazing Grace .......2006-12-10

This is one of those corny, but charming, horror movies from the 1980s. It falls into the same category as Fright Night. But there is one element in this movie that sets it apart and makes it truly worth watching: Grace Jones. She gives a totally erotic performance as a female modern-day vampire. Gedde Watanaber also gave a very funny performance as a rich Asian-American college student named Duncan. Chris Makepeace and Robert Rusler were the stars, however, Gedde Watanabe and Grace Jones basically stole every scene that they were on. It's worth your time to watch this movie.

Pure 80's! You have to adore it!.......2006-11-15

I loved this movie when I saw it as a youngster and hadn't seen it since so I jumped at the chance to own it on dvd. And thanks to those nice people at Anchor Bay we can enjoy it in a beautiful crisp 1:1.85 transfer. Such a pity it didn't get the 5.1 or DTS remaster but even so, it's still a treat. Only films from this era could get away with being so camp. All the characters are likeable especially Duncan played by Gedde Wantanebe. You may be interested to know that director Richard Wenk is the co-writer of the recent movie 16 Blocks.
The extras are awesome including casting sessions and the directors first film. If you love 80's horror, and let's be honest those were the best years for horror, you MUST buy this.

VAMP has much more going for it than most of the 1980's wave of slashy trashy horror films.

This film is imaginative and quirky. First of all it stars Billy Drago as an albino thug. Secondly, it stars Grace Jones who was probably born to play the mute but imposing vampiric dancer.

The film is surprsingly stylish with stylish green and pinkish hues adding to a strange landscape. This film reminds me of Martin Scorcese's AFTER HOURS. Like AFTER HOURS this has a surreal world just around the corner from normality where oddballs lie in wait and strange events lead into other strange events.

The film is not without its faults. The acting can be suspect, though not bad enough to spoil the film, and it can be quite cheesey at times. But, then again, I think this adds to its charm. Buy it!

Here's a classic Hollywood star vehicle. What began as a screenplay based on the biography of troubled TV anchorwoman Jessica Savitch (Golden Girl, by Alanna Nash) took more than eight years to reach the screen, written and rewritten, on and off, over the years by husband-and-wife team John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion, mainly because they needed the work to qualify for the splendid Writers' Guild health-insurance plan. Although the considerable charisma of Pfeiffer and Redford go a long way, in many respects Nash's original nonfiction book (and even Dunne's peculiarly disingenuous "insider" account of the writing of the screenplay, Monster: Living Off the Big Screen) offers tales more compelling than the one that eventually made it to the screen. But, all things considered, that's a little like comparing apples and oranges, since the slick Up Close and Personal bears about as much resemblance to its gritty original source material as...well, an apple does to an orange. Critic Roger Ebert, who awarded the movie three stars, nevertheless said he was reminded of the time producer Samuel Goldwyn commissioned a screenplay about the Lindbergh kidnapping. Only, to quote Goldwyn, "it can't be about kidnapping, which is against the Code. For legal reasons, we have to change the name from Lindbergh. And the kid's father shouldn't fly." Robert Redford-Still Handsome At 60.......2007-01-05

I absolutely love this film. Not only does Robert Redford got the looks, but he's also got the talent. He's starred in numerous classics, like The Way We Were and The Natural.

Tally starts as a naive worker at Channel 9, and Warren keeps her around, but not giving her what she was hoping for. Eventually she does grow and mature, while also snagging the anchor position and Warren himself. Surprise ending that will have you leaving the room...

Another Redford recommendation is The Horse Whisperer, which is also a love story and costars a young Scarlett Johansen.

I must say I'm shocked this film was overlooked when it came to the big awards.

Why do the Oscar voters hate love so much? Is it because they're all shallow phonies out of touch with real human emotion? I think we all know the answer to those questions, right?

Heck, I don't go around calling people names and feeling good about it. But when a film of this caliber is called "drivel" by one critic and "horse manure" by another. It sort of gets my goat, you see where I'm going with this?

And another thing, just because something has a happy ending doesn't mean it's not an artistic success, understood? I could write all day about how real art needs to reflect life and be honest about the miserableness of life, but who wants to read realistic views like that, you follow?

Anyway, Redford really phones in a great performance and Michelle P. is radiant as a TV reporter with mad skills and a questionable attitude.

Redford Does it Again.......2006-07-28

Robert Redford starred in one of the undisputed great romance films of all time, The Way We Were. Up Close and Personal takes many aspects of this film plus many other great romance classics, like Pygmalion and A Star is Born.

Sally Atwater (Michelle Pfeiffer) is an ambitious woman who wants to break into the nightly news game. She fakes an audition tape and sends it every news department. She gets a bite from a small station in Miami. Channel 9 news is headed by veteran Warren Justice (Redford). He immediately sees through Sally's disguise but he sees something in her.

Sally keeps on trying and absorbing everything about the news. And one day, the weatherman walks off and Warren puts Sally on (but changes her name to Tally.) Tally is an unmitigated flop but according to Warren "the camera eats her up." Warren takes her under his wing and turns her into a first rate journalist. Eventually, she becomes an anchor.

During a sweeps story at a penitentiary, Tally gets caught up in a prison revolt. But this gives her a unique opportunity, she is the only reporter on the inside. Her coverage goes national and she becomes a media sensation. It's not long before the networks come knocking on her door but Warren has escaped that rat race and is not interested in returning.

With Tally a star, Warren decides that it is time to get back into the game but on his own terms.

This is the return of Redford, the romantic actor. He proves two decades later he still has it. Pfeiffer, like her character, was coming still coming up and this helped prove she could handle a romantic lead. This film also features two great supporting performances from Stockard Channing and Kate Nelligan as two of Warren's exes.

This is a great date film or to watch after a break-up. And it has the only great Celine Dion song - Because You Love Me.

This is an amazing action movie about bikers. Andrew Divoff is so incredibly sexy! Watch the movie just for him! It's got a romantic story, action, cool bikes, and a great storyline overall. Definitely a great watch! Again, Andrew Divoff is amazing. Not too many guys look so amazing in a pair of tight jeans. His buddy, Bubba, while having an expansive waistline, and lots of tattoos, has a very big heart. Buy this movie!

Bikers Get A Break.......2000-02-07

I thought Running Cool was a great movie. Bikers are always being displayed as outlaws. This movie comes together to show how bikers stick together as a family. The language is a little foul, but if you can look past that you will find that not all bikers are bad. They are everyday people just like you and me. You also have an added humor along with a romantic love story in here as well. It goes back to the old saying "You can't judge a book by it's cover".

A father (Charles Shaughnessy) enters into an affair the his daughter's friend (Charlotte Ross, who is actually the seducer in the relationship). When she ends up murdered, he goes into overdrive trying to keep the illicit affair a secret from his wife and daughter. The premise is okay, the acting passable... The storyline wouldn't be so disturbing had Ross not portrayed Shaughnessy's daughter for six seasons on "Days of Our Lives" ... ick! Plays occasionally on Lifetime Movie Network, so save your money.

DIRTY OLD DAD.......2005-03-14

A KISS SO DEADLY has so many things wrong with it, I find myself surprised to give it three stars. Overall, I found myself enjoying the premise, although it's fairly obvious early on what's going to happen. The scriptwriter throws in an obvious red herring, but once the movie picks up, it becomes pretty evident who the murderer is. Charles Shaughnnessy's character is so unlikeable, it's easy to overlook his character, and focus on the younger ones. Deedee Pfeiffer does a credible job as his daughter and Charlotte Ross as the vixen Amanda is quite good. Kerrie Keane does a good job as Shaughnessy's puzzled wife. Even with its erratic pacing and derivative context, it still manages to be okay entertainment.

A KISS SO DEADLY. Right there is words to describe the suspense. The only problem I had with this movie is that it wasn't long enough. Charles Shaughnessy plays a great dad who is always very overprotective of his daughter. It's hard to think that he would lure the best friend into his "world". There are many boyfriends that are linked into it that you think the Dad would have nothing to do with the murder. I recommend this movie if you like "living on the edge" as so to speak.-

Wow! What am amazing waste of time and money. This movie is awfull. There is a reason it only made $2 million. The only people who saw it were the extra's and their families so they could point themselves out in the film.

Great performance from Peter Faulk. Many familiar faces in the large cast. Most of the hilarious lines are uttered as part of the radio soap written by Faulk's character, Pedro Carmichael. Seems Pedro has issues with Albanians. Pedro has issues, period. Great scenes shot in and around New Orleans, fab music from Mr. Marsalis. Overlooked, underrated movie.

The movie is a bit of a mess, hard to follow at times, hard to know when to laugh, or if we are laughing, should we be?

Peter Falk stars as a 1950's script writer for a New Orleans radio station's soap operas. Apparently he dislikes Albanians and allows his radio soap operas to take strange detours into jokes at the expense of Albanians.

The movie also has a movie within a movie involving a romance between 36-year old Barbara Hershey and 21-years young Keanu Reeves.

The real star of the movie is the city of New Orleans and the amazing soundtrack of Wynton Marsalis. He really did a hell of a job with his compositions, but hey the guy is from New Orleans -- who better to set loose to write a soundtrack about his home city.

This movie is delightful to watch. Keanu Reeves is great in this movie - very charming and fun to watch. I like his character a lot as a 21-year old college boy (very believable). My favorite part in the movie is when Martin was w/ his aunt Julie in a cafeteria - telling her about his dreams, of Paris, etc. Barbara Hershey and Peter Falk are such great actors. I highly recommend this movie.

Couldn't even get through it........2007-05-11

This movie does not deserve too many words -- it's largely a forgetable, vanity project made by Susanna Hoff's mother, Tamar Hoffs, for her pop singer daughter. It's vacuous and difficult to sit throgh -- at least Beack Blanket Bingo had those Annette and Frankie duets interspersed between the weak plots. And that extended scene with a half-naked Susanna looking in the mirror while Aretha Franklin's Respect plays in the bckground. Respect? No wonder she never got any again after making this atrocious waste of celluloid.

This movie was not what I expected it to be. I'm an Ontkean fan, and well there just wasn't enough of him in this movie. Didn't enjoy it all that much.

The Allnighter Staring Susanna hoffs.......2006-06-19

Susanna Hoffs, the lead singer of the bangles, plays Molly, a college student, who on the last day is trying to find that one truely amazing love. Her friends, one played by joan cusack, who in this movie is hilareous, and slightly resembles boy george, but anyhow is hilareous, are there to help. At one point Molly is mislead by a singer in a band she likes, and her friends get accedentally arrested for something they didn't do.

Babes, one Bangle, Bikinis. . .how can you loose?.......2005-10-16

OK, for a start, this movie isn't the turd that some reviewers would have you believe. By that I don't mean to imply that it is a good film, far from it, but it certainly does not stink. Tamar Simon Hoffs wrote this film as a vehicle for her daughter, Bangle rocker Susannah Hoffs. I suppose it was supposed to propell Susannah to movie-stardom; it didn't.

However, all of the major cast members turn in perfomances that are actually quite good given the material they had to work with. Joan Cusack, likely the only person in this film that you could pick out of a line-up, as actually quite good as the film-obsessed Gina. Dedee Pfeiffer, sister to Michelle Pfeiffer, is super-cute as air-head Val. Killer (James Shanta) and C.J. (John Terlesky) are typical surfer dudes.

That brings us to Susannah Hoffs. I was Bangle obsessed when I was in graduate school (yes, I said GRADUATE school). I thought the Bangles were (are, actually) a fine band; sort of what the Beatles might have been if they had been girls. I really wanted to see this film when it first came out but somehow I missed it. So, in 2005, I saw it for the first time. I'll admit freely that if Bangle Susannah had not been in the film I wouldn't have bothered. Can she act? Yes. Is she very good? No. Again, that doesn't mean she stinks! Most actors in most prime time shows are not what I would call great! Could Susannah hold her own on a show like Friends? Sure.

Here's the plot in a nutshell: Molly (Susannah) loves C.J. but C.J. loves to surf. Molly tries to get through to C.J. but C.J. loves to surf. Frustrated, Molly goes after a washed-up '60s rocker from some band called the Rhinos. Surprisingly, the former Rhino has the moral fortitude not to take advantage of young Molly (who is seriously hot, by the way) but she ends up trapped on the balcony of his hotel room when a former lover shows up.

Molly calls Gina and Val for help but they are promptly mistaken for hookers and arrested. They don't look like hookers to me, they won't look like hookers to you, just go with it. Description

Addison Terrill (C. THOMAS HOWELL), a former district attorney now in a lucrative private practice, has what seems to be the perfect life. Putting this on DVD seems like a big enough waste of money. You can tell the film is going to be chintzy on the budget when the lead actress's wig looks like a Halloween prop at your local Party City; however, the beautiful house used for the main characters was the real star here. But this film's redeeming quality is how laughably bad it is. You will find yourself rewinding scenes to laugh again as you won't believe how cheesey it looked the first time - like when the hooker gets shot - a classic death scene! The cinematography never rises above a primetime episodic on a low budget giving it a shot on video feel. The dark night scenes were overlit, and the supporting cast were the real jewels here insuring they never work again. The mention of "Dr. Pepper" numerous times was so ridiculous - did the Texas-based Dr Pepper demand to be featured throughout this Texas production or were they offered some free publicity? Either way, Dr Pepper sure tastes good with Turkey.

An entertaining 94 minutes of "who done it" intrigue.
Was good to see Sean Young again.
C. Thomas Howell looked a bit ragged.... is his health OK ?

Admittedly we guessed the plot and the killer at around 30 minutes into the movie and at times the plot twists made us think we might be wrong.... but we were right.

Despite figuring it out so early, it was still entertaining

A Killer Within does a good job of coupling some original surprises with a character-driven plot. No easy feat for sure, and trust me, the script could have easily been turned into a lousy Lifetime Channel movie of the week without the right direction and cast.

Becky Terrill, played by Sean Young, leads the caricatured life of a stereotypical Dallas socialite. Her posh North Dallas house is ridiculous, her Mercedes is pristine and her dependency on alcohol is ravenous. The only thing that seems to bother Becky's Prada-clad existence is her 4 year-old son.

Becky's husband, Addison, played by C. Thomas Howell, is a high-powered corporate attorney with some codependency issues and a raging Dr. Pepper jones. Addison comes home from work to find Becky brutally murdered, apparently at the hands of someone targeting Addison. The lead detective fingers Addison as suspect number one and his investigation basically ends there.

But Addison, who has made some dangerous enemies during his climb to the top of the food chain, has a suspect of his own. In order to find the killer and protect his innocence, Addison reaches into his past and enlists the help of Jesus Vargas, a former cop played with enthusiasm by Giancarlo Esposito. Esposito's performance as the renegade ex-cop is the most authentic in the film. The lawman and the lawyer strike an uneasy alliance as they navigate the seedy side of Dallas in search of Becky's killer.

Director Brad Keller does a masterful job of introducing just about everyone as a suspect and the guessing continues to the very end.

A Killer Within.......2005-04-16

A Killer Within is a decent murder mystery. This indie flick isn't the next Million Dollar Baby, but it will keep you entertained for about an hour and half.

The plot is well written and there's a good ensemble cast (C. Thomas Howell, Sean Young and Giancarlo Esposito). The basic premise is that Addison (Howell) is a big-shot lawyer, who comes home one night to find that his wife Becky (Young) has been murdered and his young son is unconscious and badly injured. With the help of his business partner and an ex-cop, Addison goes on a search to find the real killer.

Ben Browder's performance as Addison's business partner is also worth mentioning. Sci-fi buffs will probably recognize Browder from Stargate SG-1 and Farscape.

If you're into murder mysteries, it's definitely worth taking a look at.

Imitation as Flattery.......2007-01-13

This film, when originally released, was meant to ride the coattails of Wes Craven's "Shocker", but wound up being released first. Craven's battle with the MPAA for a rating that wouldn't kill his film in theatrical release, resulted in the better-directed and acted, "the Horror Show" being released ahead of his "Shocker". I feel that, although the plot was basically a stolen one, it was better done. The suspense and terror build nicely, and there are frightening elements to it that were missing in its progenitor. The acting was flawless, and Max Jenke is a more frightening killer than Freddy even hoped to be. A true classic, and a must-have for the collector of horror/slasher flicks.

house 3 doesn't exist.......2006-10-21

they never made a house 3. last time i checked this was a great subject of embarassment for the maker of house 4. this has obviously been done recently to lessen that humiliation. this movie may be that old, but the name house 3 isn't.

THE HORROR SHOW.......2005-11-08

For everyone who thinks The Horror Show is the missing House 3 its not (1989) THE HORROR SHOW adopted the title House 3 in Australia and the UK so producers of House 3 retitled the film House IV to avoid confusion so House IV is actually House 3 just under a different title. The plot of the the Horror Show is about Detective Lucas McCarthy(Lance Henrickson)who has caught brutal serial killer Max Jenkie or Meat Cleaver Max (Brion James) exicuting Max was not the end of his reign of terror but actually gave him a new lease on life now he haunts the home of lucas and his family. Terry Alexander (Dawn of the Dead) plays Detective Casey and i actually ate at that restraunt in the movie when i was little. All in All this movie is pretty good i have not seen Wes Cravens Shocker yet but this film looks quite similer to it.

And in reality it is just that, a toss up. The movies are quite simular in many ways: but for my money I choose "The Horror Show" over Wes Craven's "Shocker" because I feel that the acting along with the special effects over rule "Shocker" by far. And for out and out scares, this one can do it. So with that much said I rate it a 4.

Watchable, but could have been better........2005-01-02

Lucas, a good cop and family man, caught serial killer Max Jenke. But after the murderer is put to death, he comes back to plague Lucas through various halucinations. It turns out Jenke is now inhabiting some alternative world, can use electricity to his advantage.
Henriksen is a strong, believable and sympathic character, and Jenke is a genuinely terrifying villain. Though this film contains truly dramatic and chilling moments, not to mention an atmospheric soundtrack, it is sadly let down by the fact that there are long periods in which nothing much happens. For example, the first five minutes or so seem to consist of aimless wandering through the killer's lair. Another problem is the dialogue. There are sometimes entire conversations which seem to be made up of little but f-words. Still, this is a watchable maniac-on-the-loose film.

but you'll have to see for yourself. However, if you don't find this movie at all interesting it's certainly not for a lack of ambience, the cinematography is as gorgeous as any I've ever seen. For fans of the 80's direct to video market.

Cannon Group SUCKS!!!.......2004-02-21

John Stockwell, a terrible actor with forgettable moments in movies like Losin' It and Christine were god awful. No wonder why this production company went under. Thank god that the like the passing of the 80's, so has the Cannon Group that makes such horrible films, with the exception of the cheesy Ninja Movies. Don't waste your money on this video, it will show sometime on HBO at 3:30 am when your when can't sleep, and trust me, this will have you sleeping in time. The movie is obviously a cheap rip off of the Keanu Reeves made for t.v. movie "Brotherhood of Justice," which is made a little better with the likes of Keither Sutherland.

For me DANGEROUSLY CLOSE is one of those films, which are absolutely underrated!
AVENGING FORCE, AMERICAN NINJA, AMERICAN GOTHIC... al those films are of the same class and contain some very cultic elements which make these films very worthy!

What happened to this movie?.......2002-12-27

So what if the plot is paper thin? There were still some imaginative moments in the first half of the film. However at precisely half way through the entire thing falls apart.
A student body security outfit called the Sentinels decides to put a stop to all crime at their high school. Every thing goes fine until they start letting their power run to their heads.
I liked the characters and the fast pace set at the start but then it took a nose dive. Cannon made good films. This one could have been great.

One of George Clooney's earlier efforts, RED SURF is about as exciting as doing dishes. Murky editing, tedious plotting and mediocre acting help in sinking this tale of drug dealers who decide to do one last job before trying out respectable lives. Joining Clooney are Doug Savant (Melrose Place), Deedee Pfeiffer (Grease 2 - she must like being in unintended disaster movies), and Philip McKeon (whose only purpose is to spout profanities in each line of dialogue). Nothing to recommend this forgettable flick.

What a piece of work this is. Watching George Clooney run around with long hair and pretend to be a drug runner? Come on... No wonder this movie never recieved a theatrical release.Bad acting lighting and really bad camera work sink this shipwreck. To bad the tides couldn't have washed this film out to sea.
