Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (<I>Return to Lonesome Dove</I> and <I>Dead Man's Walk</I>) and a TV series. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

5 out of 5 stars Lonesome Dove.......2007-06-08

This dvd starts off slow, but you get so attached to the characters. It is very authentic historically. You will laugh, cry, and think about the characters and story for a long time after viewing!!

5 out of 5 stars The real deal........2007-05-15

This is the second time I had purchased this Title. The first one had anything but the original actors. This one is the real deal and the movie is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Great Drama & Storytelling leaves you begging for more.......2007-04-29

this is without a doubt the best Western ever, and for Western Lovers, there's more, the whole Lonesome Dove series is worth owning. I recommend reading the books also,.... more than once

5 out of 5 stars Duval is an American treasure!.......2007-04-19

If I could have given this film 10 stars, I would have. This is an important film. Important in that every American should see it. The chemistry between Duval and Jones is superb. I watch the DVD about every six months or so. What can one say about Duval? His performance is the best he's ever done and puts him on my list of top five actors of all time. He's even said that this role was his finest. My only regret was that this was a TV mini series and not eligible for Oscar consideration. If it had been Duval would have walked off the stage with his second Best Actor statue. Please do not miss this.

5 out of 5 stars one of the greatest westerns adapted from a great novel.......2007-04-10

luckily this screenplay was not scripted by the author himself like 'dead man's walk', so all the unnecessary non-stop yammering of gus from page one until he died was so smartly omitted that making this 'lonesome dove' movie one of the greatest westerns ever made into movie. wonderful cast, terrific performance by all the actors in it. great screenplay, wonderful and appropriate sound track lingering behind, floating up in time to deepen the feeling of every specific moment. duvall did a better-than-oscar-nomination performance, amazingly made that unforgettable character alive and became a larger-than-life image. tommy lee jones was also the best choice playing call's role. wonderful cinematography footage and settings, not one inch wasted or misplaced.

A lot of taboos are broken in Loving Annabelle, even if the film itself remains remarkably tasteful--even demure. The central characters are two women, a teacher and her student, and the setting is an all-girls school (shades of Lost and Delirious). Annabelle (the smoldering Erin Kelly), a senior, is a rebellious rocker chick--the Beverly Hills version that is, i.e. highlighted hair, black eyeliner, and nose ring. Her senatorial mother ships her off to boarding school to shape up. Annabelle's hard-partying ways are starting to become an embarrassment. Miss Simone Bradley (the sympathetic Diane Gaidry) is a popular poetry teacher. She's a Catholic. Annabelle is not. Simone has a boyfriend, Annabelle is gay. Looks can be deceiving, however, and there's more to both than meets the eye. For one, Simone's relationship is not as secure as it appears. For another, Annabelle's ardor is so relentless it threatens to sway sympathy against her. She seems to have no regard for the damage an affair would inflict on her teacher's career. Nonetheless, Simone is not entirely resistant to her charms. Inspired by 1931's Mädchen in Uniform, writer/director Katherine Brooks preserves the forbidden relationship at the heart of the Weimar-era classic, but drops the political subtext. Consequently, she doesn't take on more than she can handle, but Loving Annabelle still feels a little slight. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Rising star Erin Kelly is Annabelle, a precocious Senator's daughter who falls for her Catholic school teacher, Simone (Diane Gaidry, The Dogwalker). After Simone is assigned to control the rebellious student, she instead finds herself drawn into Annabelle's world. As their attraction builds, the two women must cope with the reactions of those around them. Writer-Director Katherine Brooks unveils this smoldering tale of forbidden love with intelligence, wit and sensitivity.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet Story.......2007-06-14

I enjoyed it very much it was slow paced but not boring.

4 out of 5 stars Predictable but so great!.......2007-06-10

As other reviewers have mentioned, you don't have to be a lesbian to love this movie. Whether you're a lesbian, a straight chick, a straight guy, or a gay guy, you'll truly appreciate the raw emotion in this movie.

So what's to like about this movie? Well, the setting of this movie is in a Catholic school and one of the main characters is a lesbian.. and the other main character, a teacher, isn't a lesbian. We all know what's going to happen here. The questions are is it going to happen, and if so, when and how? These questions build some intensity and you just can't wait to see what happens in the next scene. And that's what makes a great movie.

What's not to like? Not much. The ending had me scratching my head a little bit but movies don't always end the way we want them to so that's not enough to make me dislike this movie.

As far as lesbian movies go, this movie is the best I've seen in its genre. In terms of movies in general, this is a good movie, not great. This is the reason why I gave it 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Loved "Loving".......2007-06-09

I loved this film. I really liked how Annabelle was gradual and kept her cool. This tension between Simone and her fiance added to the heat. This was not a film about lesbian sex, which (yes, even as a young horny guy) I really liked. The film focused on the forbidden aspects: Catholic school mixed with homosexuality and a teacher/student relationship equaled a great cocktail. Gotta see this film! I have half a dozen times now...and not just "the scene"!

3 out of 5 stars Loving Annabelle.......2007-05-25

The acting is terrific but the ending left many questions unanswered. Not unlike the movie it is based upon "Maedchen in Uniform."

5 out of 5 stars Totally Hooked.......2007-05-23

I've watched this movie at least ten times since I bought it. It's fantastic and I can't stop thinking about "that" scene.

Director Francis Coppola's adaptation of the popular S.E. Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centers on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C. Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, the film nonetheless features some fine direction from Coppola in a story that evokes memories of the classic coming-of-age films of the 1950s. <I>--Robert Lane

Amazon.com

No one was surprised when Francis Ford Coppola revisited Apocalypse Now, but his overhaul of The Outsiders raised a few eyebrows. Here was a modestly successful film better remembered for its Brat Pack cast than its Oscar-winning director, but The Complete Novel succeeds in bringing more of S.E. Hinton's young adult classic to the screen along with Coppola's epic vision. The story remains the same: The working class greasers and wealthy Socs ("Socials") of Tulsa, OK, circa 1966, are at war. Despite the bigger names in the cast--Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe--the friendship between C. Thomas Howell's Ponyboy and Ralph Macchio's doomed Johnny is still the focus. If anything, Tom Cruise, as an obnoxious greaser, gives the least promising performance, while Matt Dillon (Crash) as the unpredictable Dally and Diane Lane (Unfaithful) as the beautiful Cherry provide a taste of the mature work to come. Aside from 22 minutes of restored footage (including a prologue and epilogue), which add heart and grandeur, The Complete Novel includes several new rock and roll tracks, most by Elvis Presley. In the end, the revamped Outsiders still plays like a cross between Rebel Without a Cause and The Last Picture Show--and that's a good thing. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

2 out of 5 stars The Outsiders The Movie. .......2007-05-21

The movie version of the outsdiers wasn't as good as the book.
The book added alot more details, The book seemed to be alot more exciting. When I saw the movie I was really disappointed. I pictured everything in my mind how the people died and what everything looked like.
The movie was disappointing because There were things in the book that didn't even happen in the movie, for example the beggining the book, ponyboy is on his way out of the movies and he gets jumped by the socs, and in the movie he is writing his paper, by the way you never even find out why he is writing his paper, in the end of the book you find out that Pony and Soda don't go to the boys home, but in the movie you hear about them might having to go to the boys home but you never find out if they do. So I definitely liked the book better. It was way more exciting and you find out more. I think if they remade the movie today, it could be alot better.

4 out of 5 stars So Effin' Awesome.......2007-05-21

This movie, based of the novel "The Outsiders", totally rocks. It's about two teenaged boys, Ponyboy and Johnny, that find themselves in a scenario where lethal force is needed to save anothers life. See some punkfaced Socs got into a fight with Ponyboy and Johnny, and after a while of facing off each other, Bob (The leader of the punkfaced socs) gets Ponyboy and starts to drown him, the only way to save him is for Johnny to kill bob. So yeah, Bob gets shanked in the back and dies. So having killed Bob, Johnny and Ponyboy run to Dally for help. He sends them out to Windrixville, to stay in a knappy old abandoned church. After a week they go out for ice-cream, upon coming back they see the church burning, so... they pull the whole heroic superman crap and save like 5-6 kids from the church. Of coarse one of them has to get hurt, and it's Johnny, he gets a bunch of 3rd degree burns. Ponyboy, Dally and Johnny are now heros for what they did. Than the greasers kick the Socs tails and Johnny dies, Dally gets mad and than purposly kills himself, but in a tricky way thats hard to catch. And than Pony's teacher wants him to write an interesting paper because he's falling behind and he does. It's so ironicly called "The Outsiders." Wow isn't that nice. So yes the story is good, but when it comes to the acting, it was alittle teleprompter for me, you know that robot sound. So I rate it at 4 stars, thats all it deserves!--
Spanky Fherburger

3 out of 5 stars The Outsiders.......2007-05-21

This was a good movie and I enjoyed it, but I did think that the book was way better, but only because it explained things in detail in the book and it was filled with suspense, when the movie just zipped past everything and had not nearly as many deatils in it. The movie was ok but they couldve done better by using details and such, my main point is it couldve been better.

Katelyn Puro

3 out of 5 stars The Outsiders.......2007-05-21

I personally thought that them movie was disappointing. The book was so much better. The movie doesn't explain what the Curtis brother's life is like. Small details like what color somebody's hair is, do not bother me. But taking events from the book that effect other events. Make the movie very hard to pay attention to. Although the newer version of the movie with the deleted scenes is a very good movie, I enjoyed it very much. The newer version includes the events that were not in the original movie.
Sean L.

2 out of 5 stars make a new movie.......2007-05-21

I think this movie had a lot of potential but I don't think that it lived up to its expectations. This movie would be very confusing if someone did not read the book. I think they left a lot of essentials from the book. I was even confused and I actually read the book. if they remade the movie I think that it would be a really good movie.

Though she made her first movie at the age of 13, Diane Lane has only blossomed into a true star in her 30s, and <I>Under the Tuscan Sun</I> marks her full flowering. After a brutal divorce, Frances (Lane, <I>Unfaithful</I>, <I>A Walk on the Moon</I>) is persuaded by her friend Patti (Sandra Oh) to take a tour of Italy--where, on a whim that she hopes will rescue her from her desperate unhappiness, she buys a rundown villa and sets out to renovate it. Along the way, she gets advice from a former Fellini actress, meets a scrumptious Italian lover, and helps support Patti after her own relationship derails. The conclusion of <I>Under the Tuscan Sun</I> holds no surprises, but the deft turns and observations along the way are delightful. Lane carries the film effortlessly but surely, exuding both heartbreak and re-awakening passion. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

4 out of 5 stars An intelligent chick flick?.......2007-06-20

I got this DVD because it is my best friend's favorite movie. It was good & worth watching- funny & intelligent. Only four stars because I'm not crazy about chick flicks, and the movie keeps bouncing back and forth from drama to comedy- leaving me a little confused at times.

5 out of 5 stars Very good movie.......2007-06-17

We enjoyed "Under The Tuscan Sun" so much we decided to add the DVD to our home collection.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic Adaptation.......2007-05-17

Under The Tuscan Sun is a funny, sweet, and poignant romance. Every part is nicely translated from the book to the movie, but the romance is added. That is annoying at first. I love the many irresistible pockets of pleasure in this movie. Have fun with it, but don't expect the older, not single, cooking and cleaning lady of the book! Diane Lane is lovely.

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-16

I saw this movie on TV recently. I loved it so much that I am going to buy it!! Great Chick Flick....

Walter Hill's updated (1984), highly stylized take on biker movies still looks like a determinedly eccentric project that happens to work at times, but not at others. Michael Paré plays a biker who agrees to rescue his ex-girlfriend (a rocker played by Diane Lane) from kidnappers (led by Willem Dafoe). The ensuing battle against a nocturnal background of industrial blight, chrome, and loud music is like some fever dream of a Springsteen fan who listened to the song "Born to Run" far too often. The audacity of the film carries it a long way even after it becomes clear that Hill's experiment is crumbling under its own weight. Dafoe, who looked even spookier back then than he does now, is memorable, as are Amy Madigan and Rick Moranis. Music is by Ry Cooder, with an appearance by the Blasters. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, optional French soundtrack, optional Spanish subtitles. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars Streets of Fire Diane Lan .......2007-06-11

Amid a brooding rock & roll landscape, the Bombers motorcycle gang, led by the vicious Raven Shaddock (Willem Dafoe),kidnap diva Ellen Aim (Diane Lane). Her hope for rescue lies with unlikely heroes: soldier of fortune Tom Cody (Michael Pare) and his sidekick, the two-fisted beer-guzzling, McCoy (Amy Madigan). Joined by Ellen's manager,Billy Fish (Rick Moranis),the trio plunge headfirst into a world of rain-splattered streets, hot cars and deadly assassins.

Excellent Diane Lane as Ellen Aim - Top Movie
Streets of Fire is a rock & roll shotgun blast to the senses.

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie, the sets are fantastic, the dialogue is deadpan. .......2007-05-07

This is one of the classic B movies of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed Streets of Fire.......2007-03-27

This movie is great. This movie has a "dark" feeling to it. It reminds me of the "50's". It has a great deal of motorcycle stunts, and the music is very good. Again the music reminds me of the "50's also. The movie is not a real serious movie. It is sort of a tongue in cheek movie.
Michael Pare, Diane Lane, and Amy Madigan are good in it.

5 out of 5 stars An all time great movie.......2007-03-21

Maybe it's a bit of a cult movie, but I never get sick of it! I love the music, the characters, the lines, it will be one to watch with my grandkids!

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT ROCK AND ROLL FABLE IN THE 50's MOLD.......2007-03-20

This is a great film for any pure rock and roll fan. It's timeless with good acting. It's a good escape film.

The fact-based mystery of Hollywoodland takes place in 1959, when the death of <I>Adventures of Superman</I> TV star George Reeves cast a pall over the waning days of golden-age Hollywood. As written by Paul Bernbaum, this intriguing whodunit effectively evokes the tainted atmosphere that surrounded Reeves' death (officially ruled a suicide but never conclusively solved), and speculates on circumstances to suggest that Reeves may have been murdered. In combining the melancholy course of Reeves' career with the investigation of a down-and-out private detective into the possible causes of Reeves' death, the film evolves into an engrossing study of parallels between lives on either side of the Hollywood dream. Building upon a distinguished career in TV including episodes of HBO's The Sopranos, Rome and Six Feet Under, director Allen Coulter finds a satisfying balance between the tragic overtones of the Reeves case and the time-honored elements of the gumshoe genre, with Adrien Brody doing fine work as private eye Louis Simo, a fictional composite character who is our conduit to the desperate yearnings of Reeves' final months.

In a critically acclaimed performance, Ben Affleck plays Reeves in moody flashbacks, caught between Superman stardom and financial dependence on his lover Toni Mannix (Diane Lane), the somewhat predatory wife of Hollywood "fixer" and MGM honcho Eddie Mannix (Bob Hoskins), whose mob connections suggest foul play as Simo's investigation progresses. Reeves' subsequent lover (played by Robin Tunney) may also be culpable, and as Simo's own personal life unravels, his empathy for Reeves takes on added significance. In presenting its mystery as a set of plausible scenarios, Hollywoodland holds interest as a mystery that's refreshingly compassionate toward the fate of its characters. Warts and all, they're likable dreamers in a town where dreams don't always come true. --Jeff Shannon

always loved george reeves as superman. I wish the movie was a little more accurate.

2 out of 5 stars Who are all of these people.......2007-06-09

This was a mish mash of a film. The screenplay was poor to begin with but the film editing left it so choppy and disorganized that it was hard to determine what was going on. There is no background, motivation,or connection, the characters simply appear and disappear. The casting made sure that all of the actors and actresses looked alike so it was hard to distinguish who was who. The film starts with a group of people who are never really identified as to who they are or why they are there. This is a problem that persists throughout the film. The actors do the best they can but they have very little to work with. The connections between the various people are left to the viewer to sort out and some of them never did make any sense. Brody does his best but the character Simo is really the only central theme and in an attempt to give the film direction and some sort of continuity and plot, Simo takes on several subplots that only serve to distract further from the film and what apparently was the central plot.

I gave the film two stars because it does offer three logical theories regarding Reeves death, without actually endorsing any of them. I thought the touch of gray hair at the very end made a huge statement and lent a silent credibility to the suicide alternative. The actors all did well with a very poor screenplay.

4 out of 5 stars Great historical fictional film about a well known legend of tv.......2007-06-07

George Reeves will forever be known and best remembered as TV's Superman, but he actually tried his best to be a legitamate movie actor. This movie works through many different possible theories around his death, and how one P.I. hired by Reeves mother had a theory other than one the police came up with. Adrian Brody is great in his role as a struggling ex cop/private investigator trying to keep a grip on his family and his job. Even Ben Affleck does a descent job, but how could he not, this was a well directed and written screenplay. Worth a look at.

5 out of 5 stars Only my opinion..........2007-05-29

I've read the other reviews, and I can only comment on my impressions. I enjoyed it a lot, and I thought Adrien Brody did a fine job of centering this complicated scenario. Production values were fine and true, and the cast was excellent: Diane Lane, Bob Hoskins, Robin Tunney, Joe Spano and the always wonderful and always underrated Lois Smith. Ben Affleck was especially fine, given a chance to finally bare his acting chops, and deserving of the awards bestowed upon him. There were a few noir-type films this year; the dismal "The Black Dahlia" and Altman's fantasy "Prairie Home Companion", to name a few. I enjoyed "Hollywoodland" more than I thought I would, and that makes me content.

Structured as a star vehicle for country singer turned actor Kenny Rogers, Six Pack is an amiable little film that aims low but showcases the pleasant and easygoing charm of its star. Rogers (The Gambler) plays a down on his luck race car driver saddled with a half dozen delinquents. As he tries to resurrect his fledgling career, he bonds with the little waifs and they form a sort of family, even as they are pursued by a corrupt sheriff who wants to send the kids to an orphanage and ruin Rogers' comeback. A blatant knockoff of films like Smokey and the Bandit, this family-oriented movie works best as a breezy comedy of errors, with the hapless racer contending with his unruly brood as they stay one step ahead of the law. --Robert Lane

Description

Kenny Rogers Is Back On Track With A Half-Pint Pit Crew That Can't Be Beat! Kenny Rogers stars as Brewster Baker, a stock car driver chasing a comeback until a gang of expert thieves steals his new engine. The kids are on the run from a crooked Texas sheriff. Brewster needs a top team of fast mechanics. From small Southern speedways to the NASCAR Grand Nationals, can the most unlikely pit crew in racing history take Baker all the way to the checkered flag? Anthony Michael Hall (THE BREAKFAST CLUB, THE DEAD ZONE), Erin Gray (SILVER SPOONS), Barry Corbin (ONE TREE HILL) and Terry Kiser (WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S) co-star in this warm and funny family comedy featuring a hot soundtrack of country hits by Kenny Rogers, Crystal Gayle, Merle Haggard and more.

4 out of 5 stars Six Pack movie.......2007-05-16

I saw this movie when it was originally on Pay Per View eons ago. I loved it when I was a kid, but now, I think it's a cheesy romance movie. Erin Gray (from the comedy, 'Silver Spoons') was great in this movie, and it's also one of Diane Lane's first movies, although she made others. Anyway, we all know that Kenny Rogers isn't a strong actor, but pulls this one off well. The movie is full of cursing, all done by the children played in this movie, so I wouldn't recommend this movie to kids under 13. Unless they are used to hearing such words on a daily basis, as mine aren't. This is a rags to riches movie about homeless children stealing their way to the top. Until they steal from race car driver Kenny Rogers, who then makes them work as his crew to pay off their debts to him, do they sort of change their ways. At the end it's all fairy tales and kisses as they are adopted by Kenny Rogers and his new wife Erin Gray. Full of laughes, this movie is funny, but for adults. The acting is cheesy, but remember this is an old movie, so acting isn't like it is today. The kids were great on this movie, but I think they could of done it without all the swearing, and rude acting. I guess that's what makes and sells movies though. Gone are the good old days of "nice movies" that didn't need to be previewed before showing your kids!

Brewster Baker (Kenny Rogers) will steal your heart in this amazing story of how a child's love can completely turn your life around. I loved this movie as a kid and I still love it as an adult. I would recommend it to anyone with a love for kids and/or Kenny Rogers.

Setting out for the one last catch that will make up for a lackluster fishing season, Captain Billy Tyne (George Clooney) pushes his boat the <I>Andrea Gail</I> out to the waters of the Flemish Cap off Nova Scotia for what will be a huge swordfish haul. While his crew is gathering fish, three storm fronts (including a hurricane) collide to create a "perfect storm" of colossal force, and Billy's path back to Gloucester, Massachusetts, takes them right smack into the middle of it. Wolfgang Petersen's adaptation of Sebastian Junger's seafaring bestseller is a faithful if by-the-numbers true-story account of a monster storm that rocked New England in 1991, specifically Tyne's commercial fishing boat and its crew. Junger's tale fashioned a compelling if staid narrative out of seemingly disparate events, but this film adaptation tends to flatten out the story into a conventional if absorbing story of man vs. nature, as the crew fights for survival against the awesome waves the storm kicks up. The central part of the film, which cuts between the <I>Andrea Gail</I>'s fight to stay afloat and the attempts of the Coast Guard to rescue a yacht in peril, is suspenseful action of the first degree, aided by some awesome computer-generated waves.

Still, it's a long way to that action, with an extended first act that consists mainly of stoic men, crying women, and a fair amount of "don't go out into the sea" dialogue--in other words, a compelling story has been shoehorned into standard summer movie fare. It's too bad, as Peterson assembled an excellent cast--including Mark Wahlberg, Diane Lane, John C. Reilly, and William Fichtner among them--but seems to opt for only a surface exploration of these characters, though Clooney seems to have a touch of Captain Ahab in him. You may still be won over by the movie, but for a more in-depth portrait, go to Junger's book for the missing details. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

Description

It's Halloween, 1991. Near Gloucester, Massachusetts, the six members of the Andrea Gail, a swordfishing boat, head out to sea for their last trip of the season. Unbeknownst to them, a shockingly brutal storm is slowly gaining steam. Before the National Weather Bureau has a chance to inform the crew of the impending danger, it's too late. The resulting battle with three merging weather fronts--an unheralded natural disaster--is grueling and tragic. Based on the true-life best selling novel by Sebastian Junger, The Perfect Storm stars George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Diane Lane and is directed by Wolfgang Petersen.<P><b>DVD Features:</b>

4 out of 5 stars All Hands Lost.......2007-06-15

Even though this movie is fictional, taken from a book, no one seems to mention the fact that the Andrea Gail was an actual ship that was lost at sea and never found. A real world story intertwined with the fictional characters of those who were claimed by the sea.

3 out of 5 stars What a country!.......2007-04-18

Some amazing special effects, tense action sequences. Good acting marred by occasional screenplay hokeyness, and some bummers at the end. George should've known better when even the gal from the Abyss was telling him to scrap the mission. Mark Wahlburg is a hunk. I'm not sure why Karen Allen took such a small role.

4 out of 5 stars AT HOME, The Perfect place to be.........2007-03-03

5 out of 5 stars Just what I ordered and very quick delivery.......2007-02-08

Very fast shipping great product thank you

3 out of 5 stars not that perfect at all.......2007-01-28

A yawningly protracted prelude which fails to elicit much liking or sympathy for the crew followed by a disappointingly unrealistic storm at sea. Nearly 50 years after "The Cruel Sea" which so vividly portrayed the might and fury of the sea in storm this was comic book stuff.

Men frolicking in the rigging with blowtorches in a force 10 gale are just not convincing! Two good points, one was left feeling of the Coast Guard - why should good men risk their lives for fools like these and the ending at least was not corny. All in all, a good opportunity missed.

So, in two words, 2 hours of fighting and at end everybody dies. Not very funny film for our reality.

Although its tale of marital crisis unfolds a bit too cleanly, <I>A Walk on the Moon</I>--which was coproduced by Dustin Hoffman--offers a welcome relief from the juvenile assault of skull-throbbing blockbusters. The story is gently involving, the characters are authentic, and, best of all, Diane Lane is given a chance to show why she's one of the most genuine and underrated actresses of her generation. Here she plays Pearl Kantrowitz, a devoted housewife on a routine vacation in the Catskills with her TV repairman husband Marty (Liev Schreiber), 14-year-old daughter (Anna Paquin), and rambunctious younger son (Tovah Feldshuh).

It's the summer of 1969. Neil Armstrong has made his "one small step for man," Woodstock is about to happen nearby (leading to a barely plausible dramatic coincidence), and while her husband is away on business, Pearl is cautiously receptive to the seductions of "the blouse man" (Viggo Mortensen), a hippie salesman who offers the adventure and passion that Pearl sacrificed to young pregnancy and marriage. Once the stage for infidelity is set, <I>A Walk on the Moon</I> progresses predictably, but first-time screenwriter Pamela Gray stays true to the emotions of her characters, and actor Tony Goldwyn (making a smooth directorial debut) maintains precisely the right tone to downplay most of the movie's dramatic clichés. Add to this a sharp dynamic between Lane and Paquin, whose performances create a substantial mother-daughter relationship. Graced by stolen moments and fleeting expressions that speak volumes, this unassuming little film is eminently worthwhile. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

It's the summer of 1969 and Pearl (Lane) is spending yet another vacation with her family when she realizes that the freedom of the times is passing her by. 5 out of 5 stars one of Viggo's best.......2007-06-14

This is one of many excellent small films that starred the wonderful Viggo Mortensen, and gained him fans like me long before Lord of the Rings. A subtle, simple yet personal story, Diane Lane is great, too. In our dreams, we all run away with the sexy "blouse Man," but reality sadly sets in...

1 out of 5 stars Why can't we review the DVD instead of the FILM?.......2007-06-04

I think that is a very fair question, considering the gushing over the film and five star ratings for the DVD. Ordering it on a whim, I have to point out now that this disc has never seen so much as a frame of playtime on my 32" plasma set, and never will. The reason is abundantly clear during the opening credits. The jagged edges in the credit text, visible on a 19" CRT, leave one wincing at a bad viewing experience about to be had. A viewing on any PC software such as PowerDVD reveals why this disc is so hard to look at. Clearly taken from an interlaced source, a frame-by-frame viewing shows the line structure becoming visible whenever there is any kind of motion. In summation, this is a dog of a DVD, and even if you seriously dislike the film itself, you cannot argue that any film does not deserve better.

5 out of 5 stars Walk on the Moon.......2007-04-11

Wonderful movie. Just like it was in the 60'd when everyone kind of went crazy. I think she should have gone with Walker.

5 out of 5 stars Petting and Pawing in the Catskills.......2007-03-29

I get an emotional kick out of A Walk on the Moon, its double-entendre title aside. For me, the DVD is a winner for three reasons: 1) Viggo Mortensen plays a romantic (OK, lusty) leading man; 2) Diane Lane does her unfaithful best three years before her Academy Award-winning turn opposite Richard Gere in Unfaithful; and 3) I get to experience, albeit vicariously, a smidgen of the goings-on at summertime resorts in the Catskills. Let me work my way backward. ...

As a tween living on the East Coast in the mid-'70s, I recall my cousins' families and mine driving upstate to Sullivan County, New York, several weekends out of every summer. Destination: Great big country house a la The Waltons. With my cousins and I belting out every lyric to sunny songs such as The Captain and Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" and Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom" as their melodies bounced around the car and out of the open windows, life felt as if it could not get any better. Approaching the Catskills, we would read aloud the colorful billboards announcing the different summer resorts. One time I got up the nerve to ask the adults in the car why we never went to any of those resorts and was told matter-of-factly that we would not be accepted there. So as I got older, I always fantasized that the Catskills resorts had to be boatloads of fun to be so exclusive and all. Dirty Dancing (20th Anniversary Edition), while fictional, definitely gave me a glimpse into the exciting lifestyle behind those wonderful billboards. All of this to say that when watching A Walk on the Moon, I feel like an outsider looking into a life I never had the privilege to enjoy. ...

A Walk on the Moon also has many cinematic elements in its favor: breathtaking cinematography, a painstaking attention to time and place, and authentic regional dialects and vernacular. For those viewers who perceive the film's pacing as long and drawn-out, I challenge them with this paradigm shift: Think of the slow pacing as a metaphor for lust's fever running its course amid summer's sweltering heat. ...

Diane Lane is a force to be reckoned with when she portrays a character whose marriage just isn't working out. A Walk on the Moon predated Unfaithful (Widescreen Edition) by three years, so we viewers get a chance to see how she has perfected acting out the visceral female erotic response that perhaps many women envy. That pivotal scene in the van in which she and the Blouse Man seem totally oblivious to a major milestone in world history is no less intense than the scene in Unfaithful when she is on the train reminiscing about quivering beneath (hunka-hunka-burnin'-love luscious) Olivier Martinez hours earlier. Watching her squirming in her seat on that train, as she alternates between bliss and angst, I felt as if I had experienced the affair! In fact, I have had to hit the Pause button on the remote, leave the room and ice down my forehead.

Lane knows how to embody a free spirit, whether in Unfaithful, in which her character double-crosses her attorney husband -- who ironically stakes his career on loyalty -- in Under the Tuscan Sun (Widescreen Edition), where American divorcee meets Fellini's La Dolce Vita (Deluxe Collector's Edition), or here, in A Walk on the Moon. ...

Lastly, the No. 1 reason I love A Walk on the Moon is Viggo Mortensen. His gaze alone is intense. He possesses a certain je ne sais quoi, an erotically hypnotic, intangible quality that actors such as Clark Gable, Marlon Brando and Steve McQueen translated very well on screen. Serving as brilliant contemporary examples would be Robert DeNiro, Idris Elba and Clive Owen. Oh, and Daniel Sunjata (oh, sing a joyous, sweet Noel). Female actors who also have that seductive quality include Kathleen Turner and Faye Dunaway as past examples; Jessica Lange, Angelina Jolie and Vivica Fox as current examples.

This DVD, A Walk on the Moon, has the starpower and emotional depth of a retro classic. Oh, and by the way, if the Blouse Man does not inspire you to go shopping, please check your pulse.

5 out of 5 stars Diane Lane is a sexual goddess.......2007-01-14

Diane Lane stars in this great movie set in 1969 upstate New York. Pearl is the wife of Marty and mother of Pearl and she should be spending the summer relaxing at a Jewish camp while watching the kids. She meets a hippie salesman who awakens her inner sexual goddess. Her life falls apart though when her teenage daughter, trying to rebel herself, catches her mother. Pearl must then face the difficult decision of staying with her family or following her heart. Or maybe she can have both.

A group of unemployed Yorkshire steelworkers hopes to replenish their empty wallets and boost their flagging morale by following in the footsteps of the Chippendale's strippers. These guys are hardly what you would think of as buff, and few can even dance. They simply take these problems in stride, because these are men with a plan--displaced, unemployed, and feeling suffocated by the women in their lives, they just want to earn a little respect. The dialogue and interaction between these men will have you screeching with laughter, but of equal importance is their sense of camaraderie and caring. First-time director Peter Cattaneo is a name to watch for; he easily conveys the sheer humanity of these people in their small town with their sad stories and irresistible sense of optimism. --Rochelle O'Gorman </p>

Description

Six unemployed men, inspired by a touring group of male strippers, decide they can make a small fortune by putting on a striptease show of their own-but with one small difference. They intend to go the "full monty" and strip completely naked! In this hi

3 out of 5 stars "The Full Monty - Fully Exposed Edition".......2007-05-13

I thought with the title saying "FULLY EXPOSED" that there would be a different ending than the theatrical version. BOY, what a disappointment! It was exactly the same!

1 out of 5 stars FALSE ADVERTISING OF A (NOT) FULLY EXPOSED EDITION .......2007-04-18

I saw this movie in the theater, when it first came out, and thought it was a good movie! I bought it, advertised as an all-new, fully loaded and FULLY EXPOSED EDITION! What I saw, was the same movie, and if they showed anymore, then in the original movie, I never saw anything different! Checking to see that this is 2007, and on top of it, a European movie, one would expect to see, as the viewers in the movie itself saw, THE FULL MONTY!

But did I expect too much, to see, a fully nude male, from the front, which, at least in this country, the U.S. is like showing the Holy Grail. Women, of course, are fair game, showing them fully nude, dancing together or kissing each other!

Have men do any of this, and American audiences gasp, and giggle nervously. Show a few limbs and heads getting cut off, with blood spurting, and people clap for more!

Do we wonder why record breaking violence keeps increasing?

If you enjoy 2 discs that contain dated boring details, and don't own the original DVD release, you might have waited for nothing! The opportunity to update it, and show what we've all seen before, especially in this innocent and inspiring story line was missed! Yes, I truly felt ripped-off!
