The first <I>Saw</I> picture actually had an idea behind it, to say nothing of the ingenuity of its low-budget production; making a silk purse out of a bloody, maggot-ridden human ear, as it were. With <I>Saw III</I>, the franchise pretty much settles into gore for gore's sake, as it explores newer and better ways to traumatize the body--and the audience. Events from <I>Saw II</I> are sewn up at the beginning of the film, and a detective on the trail of mad killer Jigsaw is quickly trussed up and subjected to one of the villain's sadistic games (this one has escape possible only by means of a key sitting in the bottom of a beaker of acid). Then we catch up with Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) himself, as he awaits death from his debilitating illness; once again he's tended by helper Shawnee Smith. The movie follows parallel plots: Jigsaw blackmails a doctor (Bahar Soomekh) into keeping him alive, and tortures a vengeful soul (Angus Macfayden) into recognizing the futility of revenge. Original <I>Saw</I> creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell worked on the script of this one, and it fully buys into the series mythology, referring backwards to previous events and, for all we know, preparing us for future installments. But if future installments are as pointlessly repugnant as this one, there's not much to look forward to. <I>--Robert Horton</I>
Description
Jigsaw has disappeared. With his new apprentice Amanda (Shawnee Smith), the puppet-master behind the cruel, intricate games that have terrified a community and baffled police has once again eluded capture and vanished. While city detectives scramble to locate him, Doctor Lynn Denlon (Bahar Soomekh) and Jeff (Angus Macfadyen) are unaware that they are about to become the latest pawns on his vicious chessboard

A Truly Lousy, Mean-Spirited Sequel.......2007-06-22
What was great about the original Saw, was that there was a great twist ending and the gore was hinted at, not really graphic, leaving the viewer to conjure up the worst in their imagination. This was a similar tactic used in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, what was not seen seemed so much worse. With Saw 2, things took a little more graphic turn, there was still a nice twist ending, and the story wasn't as heavy handed, there was a "fun" element to the story. Saw 3 cranks up the gore, and slaps the viewer with a heavy, very melancholy storyline. Saw 3 is so depressive, there is really no one to cheer for, you really don't care who lives or dies as there is really no character development, and the two new main characters/victims are so unlikable you begin to lose interest. While I agree Saw 3 wraps up loose ends from Saw 2, it ends up presenting so many new questions that it doesn't feel like a complete film. Now you will have to see part 4 when it comes out to see how the storyline of part 3 wraps up. I don't care any longer, I am done playing Jigsaw's game. Unless your idea of entertainment is seeing broken bones being pushed through the skin, or toolbox brain surgery, stay away from this bloody mess of a film.
Saw III-The last Saw?.......2007-06-21
If you saw the first and second Saw, you'll be pleased with Saw III. Some may think that this particular film isn't as good as the original, but it still stands on its own.
So what's this movie about? If you've seen the original and the second Saw (and if you haven't, I suggest you do), you know what the basic storyline is about. I fear that no matter what I say, I'll be giving away spoilers so all I'll say is that Jigsaw is ill and a doctor is kidnapped to help him. The goal of her "game" is to keep Jigsaw alive. If he dies, she dies. Meanwhile, another man must go through a series of games and his ultimate goal is to forgive the man who killed his son.
So what's to like about this film? First, we have some of the same characters from the original and sequel. We have Shawnee Smith as well as more in depth appearances by Leigh Whannell (obviously only flashbacks). Of course we also have Tobin Bell, who plays Jigsaw. Second, those who love the traps will shriek in delight with the traps in this particular film. I actually had to turn my head during a couple of them because they were too painful (pun intended) to watch. Third, the storyline in this particular film is more in depth and emotional than the first two. Rather than just having people playing Jigsaw's "games" (although there are an abundance of those as well), there's a real (and personal) reasoning behind Jigsaw's antics.
And what's not to like? You should definitely watch the original and the second Saw before checking this one out. This film won't make sense if you haven't seen the two previous Saws. Second, one thing that sort of irritated me was how the writers attempted to make Amanda as sad as possible. That in itself isn't irritating however the writers had her continually saying and doing a lot of things to further prove the point that she was not happy with her life. Other than that, this movie is great.
If you've seen and liked the first two Saws, be sure to add this one to your collection. I fear that this may be the last movie in the Saw series.
All the pieces of the puzzle come together............2007-06-20
All I gotta say is that the Saw franchise continues to impress me. I mean, Tobin Bell can do no wrong as Jigsaw the killer!!! He is truly an amazing actor. Now as for the storyline, it is a simple yet very intense one. Jigsaw and Amanda have set up another twisted game for two people. One is a female doctor who is having an affair on her husband and the other is a man who hasn't come to terms with the death of his young son. Who was the victim of a car accident at the hands of a drunk driver. But the two of them will have to figure out their connection to one another, to survive Jigsaw's game and to make matters worse. Jigsaw may not have that long to live, as he too must fight to stay alive long enough to finish is his dangerous game.
Saw III.......2007-05-29
I thought this was the best out of all the Saw Movies, I personally thought this movie was more detailed and kept me on the edge of my seat. Usually, with most movies after the first one, the remaining movies go down hill, not this one.
Its all downhill from here........2007-05-29
Have you ever seen a sequel that was as good as the original? Certainly not. This time is no different. Saw I was decent. Saw II was an insult. Saw III was zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ... a snoozer ...

HD-DVD version.......2007-06-22
Okay folks, I am guessing you have seen this movie as it is quite a few years old now so I will not bother going into the details of it. If you wish to know more about the plot then check it out on imdb.
The big question is, how did it fare being transfered to HD-DVD? Well to sum it up I would say brilliantly. The video transfer is crisp and detailed, it does suffer a tad with film artifacts but this is the best we are ever going to see it that is for sure.
The audio transfer is absolutely superb.
You want HD-DVD? Well this is as good as it gets for this title.

The sacrifice of a beloved character is just one of many highlights in <I>Nemesis</I>, the 10th feature in the lucrative <I>Star Trek</I> franchise. Enigmatically billed as the beginning of "A Generation's Final Journey," this richly plotted <I>Next Generation</I> adventure maintains the "even number rule" regarding <I>Trek</I>'s feature quality, and it's one of the best in the series. It hits its brisk stride when Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his <I>Enterprise-E</I> crew encounter Shinzon (Tom Hardy), a younger clone of Picard, rejected by the Romulans as the human weapon of an abandoned conspiracy. Raised on the nocturnal Romulan sister planet Remus, Shinzon now plots revenge against Romulus <I>and</I> Earth but needs Picard's blood to carry out his scheme. A wedding, a childlike "duplicate" Data named B-4 (Brent Spiner), spectacular space battles, and uncommon acts of valor make this a tautly-paced action thriller, poised to pass the franchise (but not quite yet) to a new generation of Starfleet personnel. Die-hard Trekkers will <I>not</I> be disappointed. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Customer Reviews:
Not true to the series but..........2007-06-17
its not the worst film I've ever seen. (a few Spoilers below)
The main problems are that the story doesn't hold up to being made as a movie. I could have seen this as a special mini series or something. Everything seemed so THROWN together at the last minute and there were many gaps on continuity from DS9 and the original TNG. I hated the idea of Worf leaving his position with the Klingons to stay with Star Fleet knowing he can never move up in position, no possible way for him to be promoted ever...yet this movie makes it seem like he is doing just that. I liked the idea of him staying with the Klingons as was shown in the last episode of DS9.
What helped me give this movie 3 stars is that the deleted scenes made the movie better in my opinion, and should have been included. That shot with Spot and Worf answered my question as to what would be done with his things and what ever happened to Spot (though I can't see Worf keeping him...they should have had Deanna in the room with Spot and Spot going to her that would have been touching and more plausible). I liked seeing Admiral Janeway too, really helped bring the shows together.
Also it was nice how the extended ending had a new XO come on board and that joke with the captain's chair was nice.
Without the extras, however, I would only give this 2 stars. It was a disappointment for a true fan of the ST universe.
Dark, very dark for a Star Trek Movie.......2007-06-04
I'm not a fan of the dark movies, it may create an evil effect, but also makes it hard for the viewer to enjoy all that there is to be seen. This does live up to the Franchise history. Good battle scenes, conflict between good and evil, and true victory to the one that out thinks or out strategizes the other. I'm glad to see that they continue to bring the "technology" further into the future and that they allow the characters to grow and receive some "promotions" as side stories in it all. All in all, I have to say that I wasn't really disappointed with this movie and have added it to my collection. If you are a Star Trek fan, you should buy it. If you like Sci-Fi movies, you should at least watch it.
The Most Underapreciated Star Trek Film.......2007-05-15
The final Star Trek film is the most underapreciated in my opinion. I have and always shall be a trekkie. I have all the films and enjoy everyone of them though some are better than others. I have always enjoyed the Romulan stories and for the first time the Romulans are in one of the movies, and it just happens to be the final one. It was a very well done story and is one of my favorites.
Nemesis.......2007-05-06
This was the only S.T. movie I had not seen. Sure glad to have found it and enjoyed it!
PARAMOUNT RAPED THE ORIGINAL ENDING.......2007-05-01
I AM A AVID STAR TREK FAN AND I WAS REALLY DISAPOINTED TO SEE THAT THE DVD VERSION WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE THEATRE VERSION. THERE WAS A HUGE BATTLE SEEN THAT WAS CUT FROM THE DVD VERSION AND I ENJOYED WATCHING IT BUT IT WAS A DISAPOINTMENT ON THE ENDING.

In the first and finest <I>RoboCop</I> movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire--not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In <I>Starship Troopers</I>, Verhoeven and <I>RoboCop</I> cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cues from Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called "Melrose Place in Space," with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they've been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of <I>Beverly Hills 90210</I>. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequences (definitely <I>not</I> for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien "bugs" bent on planetary conquest. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But <I>Starship Troopers</I> is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein's underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It's an action-packed joy ride if that's all you're looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes <I>Starship Troopers</I> as smart as it is exciting. The DVD includes an above-average commentary by the director and Neumeier, several deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary and promotional featurette, cast bios, production notes, and more. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Customer Reviews:
The Movie Rips the Heart Out of the Story.......2007-06-22
Robert Heinlein's 1959 Hugo Award winning novel Starship Troopers is the inspiration for this very loose movie adaptation. Heinlein was a 1928 graduate of the Naval Academy and the author of over thirty science fiction novels. Starship Troopers encouraged the growth of the military science fiction subgenre.
Literature is a springboard for ideas, insights and intellectual growth but science fiction rarely aspires or reaches such heights. When I first read the novel as a teenager it provided insights into how a society might be organized and in the years since it has been a springboard for new ideas and growth. I'm not saying the novel is great literature but it is superior science fiction. It presents a plausible future society with an appropriate intellectual and philosophical framework. It is the philosophical aspect that is at the heart of the novel. This movie rips that heart out of the story.
Written during the height of the Cold War, the novel was the means by which Heinlein argued for a strong military. The story also is a vehicle to present his libertarian political ideas. While the story does contains more introspection, exposition, and character discussion than is common in the genre it has also been criticized as exceedingly pro-military and lacking in character depth and development. The story is pro-military but I do not agree that it lacks character development. However, one must remember that, unlike most science fiction, Heinlein was presenting ideas with the novel, not merely a story about killing alien bugs.
If the movie stood alone I might be able to recommend it based on some fine special effects, truly unworldly aliens and great action scenes but since I read and enjoyed the novel I could not enjoy this travesty of a movie.
Recommendation: Read the novel, skip the movie.
Kyle Pratt
Does Not Do The Book Justice.......2007-06-08
I was excited to learn that a movie was being made of "Starship Troopers", a favorite novel of my teen-years, and even more excited that Paul Verhoeven would be directing it since he had previously taken a much more mediocre story (Robocop) and made an excellent action film out of it. Unfortunately, the movie "Starship Troopers" does not live up to the promise of the original - highly controversial - novel.
Of course, it is hardly unusual to feel let down by film adaptations of favorite books. The screen-writer's need to compress into a couple hours a story that may have involved the satisfied reader for several days guarantees that something will be left out that one really wishes had been left in. Nevertheless, I felt that the screen writing took far too many liberties with Robert A. Heinlein's novel, and the film suffered as a result.
As one example, the original novel was full of observations about the responsibility of people to 'serve' society before becoming "citizens" with the right to vote and participate in the political process - and this aspect became controversial because of Heinlein's emphasis on military service. The movie touches upon this, but quickly simplifies it into a stilted fascist state divided between the non-participating "civilians" and the military veteran "citizens". While even that could have made for some interesting plot development, the film proceeds to ignore it completely to focus instead on soldiers in an interstellar war who frequently seem to treat combat more like a football match - even after they have suffered shocking casualties. (A more careful reading of the book, by the way, will find that many forms of service to society other than military were included among the things responsible people could do on their path to citizenship. I am afraid it would take too long to include that here, though, and suggest that anyone interested simply read the book.)
Finally, there is the matter of the characters. Heinlein had strong views on the utter pointlessness of racism. He chose to create a future in which racism was so completely extinct that no one at any point in the book ever comments, or even thinks descriptively about other characters in terms of race. But he does leave enough clues in the text so that you know that the central character - Rico - is Filipino, not the white guy (Casper Van Dien) presented in the film. Once again, I find it unfortunate that most of the book's more progressive ideas were erased by the film-makers and more so that having done this, they then fail to develop any storyline around the evidently fascist state they have created.
This does not mean the film was a total waste. As a low-brow action picture it is entertaining. But I really think the book furnished material that could have made a far better movie, with greater depth to both the characters and their situation, and I continue to hope that it will be re-made some day into a more faithful adaptation of Heinlein's original novel.
A little campy............2007-05-25
This is hard one to nail down. It is fun, campy, it makes you wonder what you would do if this was really real. A little on the gory side, but you can understand where the characters are coming from; I have felt like several of them. Lots of action, fun and friends that don't usually enjoy this kind of movie has watched and enjoyed it.
SC FI FUN.......2007-05-23
This movie is just fun, almost funny at times. Not to be taken seriously.
I was left to wonder if Starship Troopers is a satire of the entertainment industry........2007-05-22
The author, Robert Heinlein, was criticized for Starship Troopers. It was seen as pro-war, or pro-establishment. Some labeling the work fascism. Even 20 years later, there were still those, willing to say anything, true or not, to discredit Heinlein. Heinlein, the author of 20 or so other novels, was no raving fascist either, in his youth he'd been active in the Socialist party.
They're not afraid of the truth in Starship Troopers. . . When Rico (the Lead) is asked why he let a squad member take off their helmet during a training exercise, Rico says, "Because I wanted to win, Sir".
I watched Starship Troopers with a young friend. When the violence begins - when a Trooper gets killed during basic training - my friend was instilled with a sense of hero-worship I think. He was in awe of what these movie makers were allowed to show. And the Troopers still had those guns. . . I know if they were real guns. . . I'd be afraid. . . Isn't that the whole point - to pretend it's real? Is this fear, this brow-beating, what makes an action or horror movie popular? They do say, a near death experience - like a roller-coaster ride - or perhaps a horror movie - leaves us thrilled to be alive.
For the most part, Starship Troopers is filmed as an ordinary movie. In parts tho, it's as if this is a war-movie from the future. Or as if this is a documentary, used for recruitment purposes. Is that the same thing as a war-movie?
Late in the movie, Rico finds his friends all getting killed off, and he's promoted to Commander. Since this movie is done as if a recruitment-ad. . . I was left to wonder. . . is this what appeals to me? Do I secretly dream all my friends get killed, or fired, and then I'm made boss? Is this the standard movie plot? Is this the 'payoff' of a movie? I was left to wonder if Starship Troopers is a satire of the entertainment industry.
It's said that in wartime, a society takes on the imagined attributes of it's enemy. Here, it's soldiers vs giant deadly alien insects: Bugs. Soldiers are like Bugs in that both are part of a collective. A lot of soldiers get killed by Bugs but there's very little sentimentality. It's almost a good time. The society in Starship Troopers is more militaristic than our own - dare I say? more bug-like than our own. The citizens do seem somewhat dehumanized and disconnected from their feelings. Are they more cut off from their feelings, than we are from ours? I don't think so. Well, depends who you are in our society. Watch and decide for yourself if this is an ugly future, and if it's uglier than our present.
In the world portrayed in Starship Troopers at least there's honesty. When Rico's in high school, his teacher addresses the class, "Never forget, the supreme authority, thru which all other authority derives, is the barrel of a gun." Is this a truth we dare not admit? Hasn't this also become true in our world?

<I>Saw</I> opens with a gruesome scenario: Two men are chained to the walls of a grimy bathroom with a bloody corpse lying on the floor between them. Tape recordings tell them that one of the men has to kill the other, or his wife and child will die. The corpse is holding a gun in one hand, but it's out of reach...but whoever has locked these two up has thoughtfully provided a hacksaw that can't cut through the heavy chain, but might cut through a little flesh and bone. From there, <I>Saw</I> jumps back and forth as the two men slowly unravel how they know each other and that their tormentor is one of those all-knowing, all-capable serial killers (it goes without saying that <I>Saw</I> is hugely influenced by <I>Seven</I> and the movies of Dario Argento), a fellow known as Jigsaw who disguises his voice and lets a creepy puppet (lifted almost directly from the eccentric animations of the Brothers Quay) be his visual representative. But imitation isn't inherently bad; what puts <I>Saw</I> ahead of its horror compatriots is a gleeful enthusiasm that a dozen sequels to <I>Halloween</I> couldn't muster. <I>Saw</I> has problems--it's clumsily overwritten (every detail of what's going on, no matter how visually evident, will be explained by the characters); most of the situations are static and implausible; and though the cast includes talented veterans like Cary Elwes (<I>The Princess Bride</I>) and Danny Glover (<I>Lethal Weapon</I>), the acting has the depth of a puddle. The rapid pace and frequently frenzied camerawork keep things in motion and while the philosophical underpinnings of Jigsaw won't challenge Hegel or Schopenhauer, they do offer more food for thought than most contemporary horror. Discriminating fans of the genre who like their gore with a glimmer of an idea will embrace <I>Saw</I>.
The <I>Uncut Edition</I> differs only slightly from the theatrical release; it reinserts a little more gore that was cut to get an R rating and tightens up the editing (the uncut version is actually a teensy bit shorter than the theatrical release). The extras are plentiful (if a bit thin): Two audio commentaries (one by director James Wan, screenwriter/actor Leigh Whannel, and Elwes), one by the producers--thankfully, no one takes themselves too seriously. Also included are a trio of typically self-congratulatory making-of featurettes ("He was amazing to work with" etc.), an animated storyboard of a sequence they couldn't afford to shoot, a DVD-ROM game in which you can construct your own puppet, a couple of self-mocking Easter Eggs, and lots of promotional stuff for <I>Saw II</I>. There's a very curious faux-news show purporting to be an investigation of the "real" Jigsaw, which uses clips from the movie as if they were documentary footage--it's hard to say whether this is a misguided attempt to make the movie seem creepier or a bit of flimsy humor. Most fans will find the regular DVD release satisfactory; this special edition is largely for hardcore enthusiasts. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Brilliantly sick and twisted...if you can stomach it.......2007-06-20
After countless raves from nearly every one of my horror film loving friends, I decided one day it was time for me to watch "Saw," an indie slasher film premiering at the Sundance Film Festival as one of the "Midnight Movies" that is widely considered one of the greatest horror films of its generation. In no way does this film disappoint, no matter what you are looking for in a film.
Let's start with the story. Two young men--a doctor named Dr. Gordon, and a photographer named Adam--wake up chained to the wall in a dirty, old washroom. Neither of them know how they got there--and they don't know each other either. There is a slaughtered corpse between them eerily clutching a tape recorder and two tapes addressed to each of the men. The message is clear: one must find a way to kill the other by 6:00 that evening or they will both--along with Dr. Gordon's family--be killed.
Before long, they realize they are now victims of the Jigsaw killer--a known serial killer who captures people who do not appreciate life and force them to hurt themselves or others in order to save themselves from a bloody, gruesome, brutal, torturous death. In a series of flashbacks, ze discover more about Jigsaw, and experience previous encounters his victims' have had. We learn of Gordon and Adam's past, an obsessed detective dedicated to finding Jigsaw, and a young drug addict named Amanda who survived Jigsaw's sick "games" and is now mentally scarred. As the story unfolds, it suddenly explodes into a brilliantly twisted psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the credits roll after the shock ending and even for some time after that. Lots of hardcore gore and an INCREDIBLY SCARY atmosphere accompany this much-above-average slasher flick.
The acting is both great and dreadful at different times, but is always thoroughly realistic. Jigsaw is perfectly cast in his role. Adam was sort of an annoying character, but still managed to deliver, and Dr. Gordon seemed like some WAY overdramatic guy out of Star Trek, and was the only character in the small cast I was actually hoping to get killed.
The directing and editing is absolutely nothing to rave about and is solely why I didn't give Saw 5 stars. The flashbacks are adequetly done, sometimes poorly, but unfortunately, for a super psychological horror film like Saw, that is a huge failure and deserves negative feedback. Very fortunately, the strong storyline and sheer terrifying simple atmosphere holds the film together.
Overall--a very enjoyable movie watching experience, and it will scare the living daylights out of you if you watch it alone on a big screen with surround sound. Not one for the little kids however, as it is very violent in some select scenes (particularly the ending) but that shouldn't keep you from seeing it. Very good and much, much more and above and ultimately smarter and more brilliant the average super-violent slasher horror films that are out there today.
Wow - That was a surprise!.......2007-06-15
This was not as gory as I had been led to expect. The twists ARE NOT as predictable as most people think. No.. you don't really see the ending coming.
This is a psychological thriller and it's very good. Well done. There were discrepancies like someone having flash backs to someone else's memories. And some people acting pretty much annoying and the excuses for acting out of the very character templates are rather weak. A cop stays a cop. And if he's watching someone leave a building, he should have noticed when someone went in - or more specifically that he missed it when they went in and had an alarm go off in his head.
Characters are engines to further a plot but they need to be more or you end up with GhostShip where frankly you don't even bother remembering anyone's name - you already know their parts and purposes.
I will definately get the next one. This movie was such a pleasant surprise!
One of the best horror movies I've ever seen!!.......2007-06-01
If you like scary movies, you'd know that they're pretty much all the same. You have an inhumane killer that murders dozens and dozens of people either because they had a rough childhood or for no reason at all. If you've seen one scary movie, you've seen them all, right? Fortunately for horror movie fans, the creators of Saw have come up with a fresh and original concept that has spawned two sequels.
So what's this movie about? It starts out with two men passed out on opposite sides of a decrepit (and secluded) bathroom where they are chained to pipes. Oh and not to mention, there's a dead man lying down in a pool of blood in the middle of the floor. When they come to, they find a tape and upon listening to it, find out that they have to play a game in order to free themselves. The twist? This game is far from being fun. The reason? In order to free themselves, they must cut through their feet to escape. With a saw. The men must figure out why they were chosen to play the game, how, and what happens if they don't escape.
Horror movie fans, this is a must see. And if you don't like scary movies, you must see this anyway. Just turn your head during the gory parts. You'll still truly appreciate the mystery and surprise that surrounds this movie.
A Horror Classic.......2007-05-26
SAW is a true horror classic no doubt about it. Damn he {or she} who remakes this film...EVER. In the world of gore-porn and endless remakes or "re-imaginations", {I have to say this ~ Rob Zombie is pathetic for "re-imagining" Halloween...thanks for trashing it Rob} SAW stands alone as a film that is sick, very disturbing, scary, intense, frightful, mentally numbing, thrilling, avante garde, theatrical, spontaneous, evil, and macabre! This is a film where the villains recorded voice is as disturbing as his actions..and the villain is not even revealed until the last minute of the film...literally the final scene. The film cannot be compared to Se7en because we see most of the torture in the film and the villain takes up more time giving his monologue than Jigsaw's "Most people are so ungrateful to be alive...but not you...not anymore."
Two men wake up in a grimy abandoned bathroom chained and unable to escape. We see a dead man laying in the middle of the floor. His tape recorder reveals the two men are part of a deadly "game" in which only one of them will survive...if he can find the primal instinct..the "will" to survive. As the film progresses we learn about "Jigsaw" who tortures his "test subjects" in order to make them appreciate their lives they have apparently abused. Jigsaw's "test subjects" include: Jeff a man who attempted suicide but failed, Amanda the drug addict, Adam the voyeur photographer and loser, and Dr. Gordon a doctor who neglects his wife and daughter. Jigsaw makes them realize their blessings in his tortuous devices where the subject must maime his/her self or another to escape.
The films gives us clues to the identity of Jigsaw, directing attention to the orderly called Mr. Hindel aka "Zepp"...or is the killer one of the men chained in the bathroom? Dr. Gordon? Adam? The film is a Hitchcockian mystery to figure out 'who is doing this...and why?' that draws you to an intense and disturbing {not to mention disgusting} climax that will leave you stunned.
I like the film because like Se7en there is a sick twisted pathos that is plain and painfully clear in our times: "most people are so ungrateful to be alive...."
The Curse of Aleister Crowley: Descent into Lies and Madness
An Excellent Horror Flick.......2007-04-20
I'm not exactly sure why, but I hate to admit I liked this movie. It was blood, guts and gore at its very best. Halloween sets the standard in horror, as far as I'm concerned, and this is in no way on par with that movie, but it kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat. It's a simple plot filled with a lot of elaborate killings scenes. I liked it enough to rent two and three, and if a Saw four comes out, I'll rent it to. If you like horror with gore, you can't miss this movie.

Dragon Heart.......2007-05-30
Dragon Heart is a great entertaining movie. Dennis Quaid is great along with Sean Connery. The second movie is kind of corny
ONE good movie.......2007-05-30
Dragonheart is a great movie. Without the second movie, this review would've been a 5. I would rather have spent more money to just get Dragonheart alone, without the second one, than getting them both for such a great deal. The second Dragonheart was too stupid for adults, and too boring for little kids--it was complete crap.
Amazing!!.......2007-05-17
I have always loved dragons and this is a great movie about a kind-hearted dragon who tries to make the bonds between man and beast right again. This doesn't work however, and leads up to the whole point of the movie. It's great! Sean Connery has the best voice for the dragon!
Then, Part 2, is a really great followup, more of a bonus really. I like the first one better. But, for the price, UNDER $10, I had to have them both!!
Great for any fantasy movie collector!
5 for DH; 2 for DH2.......2007-05-17
Dragonheart is a classic, great mixture of action and satire fully deserving of 5 stars. DH2 is pretty much a lame feature that's only similarity to DH is the dragonology. It lacks both the humor and action of the first, and the acting isn't great. You won't miss anything if you only buy DH. Only get the double feature if you feel like splurging.
Marvelous entertainment.......2007-05-13
I had forgotten how entertaining this sequel was. I laughed and laughed when the young dragon was learning to breath fire and instead farted a fire stream.

<I>Saw II</I> brings back many features of the original <I>Saw</I>: elaborate sadistic scenarios designed to "test" the victims' will to live; Tobin Bell as the Machiavellian (yet doomed) serial killer Jigsaw; Shawnee Smith as Amanda, a survivor of one of Jigsaw's "games", forced to play again; Dina Meyer (<I>Starship Troopers</I>), whose role as a detective is considerably expanded; and the stunningly godawful dialogue of screenwriter Leigh Whannel. The set-up this time is even more preposterous than before, as a rough-and-tumble cop named Eric (Donnie Whalberg, <I>Band of Brothers</I>) watches, on video monitors, his son trapped in a house filled with nerve gas and a handful of other victims, all of whom are mysteriously connected. Eric has captured Jigsaw, but the implacable killer refuses to reveal where the cop's son is being held... unless Eric will play by Jigsaw's rules. Fans of <I>Saw</I> will love <I>Saw II</I>, as the tortures are more gruesome than before; viewers who found <I>Saw</I> either detestable or laughable won't like <I>Saw II</I> either, as the characters rarely behave like actual people (even when a moment's explanation would solve a conflict, no one bothers to communicate, even though their lives are on the line). It's a festival of body fluids, agonized grimaces, and shrieks of pain--and if that's your thing, this is your movie. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>
Customer Reviews:
Same game, different rules.......2007-06-21
If you saw the first Saw, you'll be pleased to hear that it has spawned two other movies using the same twists. Although some say that Saw II isn't as good as the original, it certainly stands on its own.
So what's this movie about? If you've seen the original (and if you haven't, I suggest you do), you know what the basic storyline is about. In this particular movie, we have a group of people stuck in a house. Their ultimate goal? To find out the combination to a safe that contains an antidote. What happens if they don't find out the combination? A gas will enter the house and they will eventually die.
So what's to like about this film? First, we have some of the same characters from the original as well as a couple actors/actresses that are familiar (including 7th Heaven's Beverley Mitchell, Donnie Wahlberg, and the lovely Shawnee Smith). We also have Tobin Bell, the character who at the end of the first Saw was discovered to be behind the "game". Second, those who love the traps will shriek in delight with the traps in this particular film. I actually had to turn my head during a couple of them because they were too painful (pun intended) to watch. Third, the storyline in this particular film changes a bit and provides the same shock that you experienced at the end of the first film.
And what's not to like? You probably should watch the original before checking this one out. I personally hadn't seen the first Saw before I saw the sequel and although I understood a good portion of it, a lot more would have made sense if I saw the original.
If you're into gory movies like Saw (and if you've seen the first one), be sure to add this one to your collection.
Not nearly as good as the original but enjoyable sequel........2007-05-05
Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is back! this time he traps a helpless group of several people people (Shawnee Smith, Erik Knudsen, Tim Burd, Franky G, Emmanuelle Vaugier, Glenn Plummer, Tony Nappo) in a booby-trapped filled house conducted by Jigsaw and his sick twisted ideas. Detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) discovers Jigsaw himself for he must play the game if his son and the other victims can survive.
Enjoyable and fairly grisly sequel to the suprise instant new horror classic "Saw" has writer-and-director James Wan as executive producer. The acting is good in some places but there is some more memorable moments of torture and gore such as the now infamous cringe-inducing "Pit of Syringes" and the gunblast to the eyeball boobie trap, though nowhere as great as the original this is still a fairly watchable and violent sequel.
This unrated uncut 2-Disc DVD set contains the alternate unrated cut not shown in theaters with excellent extras like two audio commentaries, theatrical trailer, a fun "Play Me" set top navigation game much like the one on the "Nightmare on Elm Street" boxset, The making of "Saw II" multi-featurette, "Zombie" a short student film from the director of this movie, and "The story behind the story" multi-featurette.
Unbelievable..........2007-04-28
Saw was unbelievable. Saw 2 is too, but for totally the wrong reasons. The original was... original! It was innovative. Edgy. A cool thriller. Suspenseful. Exceptionally well plotted. This... is derivative garbage. In all but title, it's nothing to do with the original really. Yes, the villain is resurrected. Yes, there are wondrous ways for people to die. Yes, people are trapped with only fiendishly clever ways for them to escape... but where's the gripping concept that kept you glued from the first minute with the original? Where are the clever twists, the intricate plotting, the "Ohhhh, didn't expect that!"? This is just one of those sequels that has no other aim but to cash in on the success of its predecessor. Such a waste. I bought this, unfortunately. I will not be rushing to watch it a second time.
WOW... awesome movie.......2007-04-04
this movie kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole 90 minutes... especially when the ending of the movie came around. all i can say is expect a big twist. when the movie was over, i had to sit for about 5 minutes and think about the ending.... and then i realized that i was an idiot for not noticing all the clues that showed up during the movie lol. anyway, this movie deserves a 5 star rating just for the ending itself.
Shockingly good sequel.......2007-03-27
Saw II is that rare movie that stays intriguing and believable the entire way through, while maintaining a cohesive storyline and gore to spare. The acting is solid, the scares are real, and the viewer is trying just as hard as Donnie Wahlberg's Detective Matthews to solve the mystery. What's most amazing is that all the clues really are right before your eyes.
At the beginning of the film, Jigsaw has committed another grisly murder, and left his calling card for Detective Matthews to track him down. Matthews reluctantly takes the case and quickly locates Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) in his warehouse lair. But this is only the beginning of another one of Jigsaw's intricate games.
Now eight people, including Matthews' son, are trapped in a house where deadly nerve gas is seeping through the walls and into their bodies. As the police try to locate the house and figure out a way to rescue the prisoners, they are also trying to figure their own way out together, while fighting amongst themselves to find out what connects them all.
The suspense in this film is palpable and Tobin Bell's Jigsaw is one of the best horror franchise "bad guys" in years. His twisted sense of morality: "Those that don't appreciate life do not deserve it" is the kind of terrible explanation that makes a psychopath real and frightening.
The twists that this film takes are surprising and show the kind of intelligence that the majority of horror schlock coming out these days is severely lacking.
The DVD extras are truly spectacular. The viewer gets a look at how the set designers laid out every one of the various traps in the film, from the needle pit to the furnace trap. All the props are also examined (the bat with nails in it, etc.). Overall, this is the kind of horror film that is watchable over and over again and the kind of film that makes a great addition to any collection.

Saw III-The final Saw?.......2007-06-21
Time For a Change?.......2007-06-17
I guess the most common question is, is Saw 3 better than the first two? I don't think there's a clear-cut answer to that. In some ways, I think the third film surpassed the first two. I thought it was more consistent and coherent in it's film-long development. I thought the suprise ending was done very well (for what it was). The movie presented a slightly more sophisticated set of ethical dilemmas this time.
On the other hand, there were some areas where I felt the film was lacking compared to the first couple. First, the actual kills are starting to lose their effectiveness. There is still tension, gore, and innovation in the tortureous situations. But the emotional and cognitive impact is somewhat diminished, IMO. I think we've gotten to the point where the killings will continue to diminish in effectiveness, unless we are given some type of substantial back story for the character that lets us connect with them, and the kill is either very prolonged (to add gut-wrenching tension) or very quick (for a shocking effect).
Another issue that I had with the film is that I found the reasoning of Jigsaw to be somewhat hypocritical. Jigsaw chided Amanda for her senseless killing, since her traps were unwinnable. This seems strange to me, in two ways. First, apparently it wasn't the actual loss of innocent lives that Jigsaw had a problem with, but just that Amanda's methods weren't the same as his. Murder is fine for Jigsaw, you just have to give the people a minute chance of survival. That's quite an ethical hair to split. Another problem I have with this is that Jigsaw allowed Amanda to set up the traps and kill the people just as a set up for a test. If Jigsaw was so against Amanda's methods, couldn't he have tested her while only making her *think* that her methods were being employed?
In any event, whatever I feel the short comings to be, I'd still say that this was a good movie for anyone who enjoys the horror genre. It seems that some changes will take place in the next Saw, and I have to admit that they've gotten me curious about where they are planning to go.
Completely Satisfied.......2007-05-09
Great film. More horrific than expected and definately the best of the trilogy. Absolutely sadistic. Cheers.
great movie.......2007-03-29
This was a very awsome movie. Anyone out there that wants to see a bloody flick but has a good script, saw is your movie.......
p.s. Strong violence and gore, kids under 14 shouldnt see it
Really good.......2007-03-28
I enjoyed this movie, in my opinion the best out of the three. Excellent, waiting for the next one......

Hardcore Thriller!!!.......2007-03-09
I really enjoyed this freaking movie. Interesting twists all through the movie and in some parts it was terrifying. If you liked the first two movies you will love this one. Pretty awesome... go on and buy it and enjoy the gore.
Still Creepy.......2007-03-08
While not as ground breaking as the first one SAW 3 still delivers some cringe worthy moments. It's not a scary movie, per se, but still makes you realize how weird some people are. A must see for anyone who has seen the first two.
Entertaining, but gory.......2007-02-27
I've seen all the Saw movies and this one is much like the first 2, but with more gore and less suspense or mystery. So I would have to say this was the least interesting of the three. But the movie provides closure, I just hope they don't make another-not sure what is left to tell. This was the first Blu Ray disc I watched on my PS3. I also own the Toshiba A1 HD DVD player so I've seen a lot of high def movies. As with most high def movies, the picture was very sharp and saturated in brighter scenes. In darker scenes, the picture was more noisy and looked like regular DVD. But I have seen this on all high def movies so I don't think Saw 3 was a bad transfer. If you liked the first 2, then you'll probably like this one too.
Saw III tha masterpiece!!.......2007-01-27
When I first seen SAW III at the movie theater, it is real gruesome and it was used by DLP projector with the best possible picture. So, I had to bought this movie from Wal-Mart... on Blu-ray because I was thinking it might will look better than how it look at the movie and most ppl say blu-ray looks awful... aww please, I believe they are not watching blu-ray on High Definition Television (HDTV). Watching blu-ray on SDTV or EDTV not going to surprise your eyes into HD...
I watched this movie with an Playstation 3 that plays blu-ray
Now, I seen all Saw movies.. I would like to say this movie has more gore than the first and second ones... It alot of disturbing images going on in this film, a lot of strange stories and flashbacks. If u like Saw 1 and 2.. then you would love this one far better.
By the way, there will be another Saw movie... Saw 4.. the same mastermind John will return but i am not sure if this is an sequel or prequel.
