John Waters made his bid for PG respectability with this enjoyably trashy comedy about the racial integration of a teen dance show on Baltimore television in the early '60s. Waters, as always, makes a virtue of junk culture and the powerful emotional forces it can represent as kids vie to get on the show. Meanwhile, a parade of former stars (Pia Zadora, Debbie Harry, Sonny Bono) and pseudostars (Divine, Ricki Lake) cross the screen, playing freakish characters absorbed by thoughts of fame. (Waters himself turns up as a weirdo psychiatrist.) This transitional film for Waters is rough going at times and not as interesting or funny as his later features <I>Cry-Baby</I> and <I>Serial Mom</I>, but it's worth a look. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars Hairdo detention, integration angst, TV dancing competitions, kids who really knew how to tease and one great big campy YES !!!.......2007-06-13

Hairspray is one of John Waters' more mainstream movies in that it deals with the themes of racial tensions leading up to an integrated Baltimore, teen angst and first true loves, and those incredible dances and dance shows on TV from the late 1950s into the 1960s. Of course, with Hairspray being a John Waters movie, characters become grossly exaggerated for a humorous effect; you get a very funny, playful and harmless cast of both young and older people in Baltimore facing changing times as they try to live their lives as best they can.

Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) is an overweight teenage girl who can shake off jokes about her weight with a type of self-confidence that is truly remarkable. Tracy and her friend Penny Pingleton (Joann Havrilla) enjoy watching and dancing along to The Corny Collins TV Show in Tracy's living room at home; and one day Tracy sets her mind to trying out for the show with some support from her friend Penny. When Tracy does try out on the Corny Collins TV dance show for dancing teenagers, she wins a spot on the council almost immediately! This upsets the stuck up, racist reigning queen Amber von Tussle and her parents (Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry) who make their living running Tilted Acres, a segregated theme park in Baltimore. As Tracy's star rises she also charms the heart of Amber's boyfriend, Link Larkin (Michael St. Gerard). Of course, this means war. Amber and her parents must--I mean, must--find a way to disgrace Tracy so that Amber can remain the star of the show and ultimately win the highly coveted 1963 Miss Auto Show award. Of course, as this all happens, Hairspray pokes fun at the obsession some people had with getting their hair to be as high and as perfect looking as they thought it could or should be.

The movie moves along at an even pace and the action keeps your attention. Look for John Waters himself as the psychiatrist hired by Penny's parents when they find out she has a black boyfriend named Seaweed. Divine turns in quite a performance as both Tracy Turnblad's mother and Arvin Hodgepile, the TV studio owner who could can The Corny Collins Show if it becomes integrated against his will. As if that weren't enough, Ruth Brown plays the role of Motormouth Maybelle, a female record store owner who is a prominent integrationist in Baltimore and who also sometimes judges on The Corny Collins Show.

Overall, the acting exceeds my expectations for a John Waters flick; and the choreography shines in great scenes where large crowds must move about. I won't give away the plot; but if you want to see excellent choreography look not at just the complicated dance scenes they had to manage but also the race riot scene near the Tilted Acres segregated amusement park.

The cinematography works well; and each character is developed nicely as the movie goes along. The casting is flawless, too.

Hairspray earns its keep quite well; it will hold your undivided attention as you howl with laughter all the way through! The DVD also features commentary by John Waters and Ricki Lake.

When it comes down to it, Hairspray manages to do be funny, hold your attention and explore rather serious issues concerning racial tensions, segregation, integration and the first true love each teen inevitably experiences--all at the same time and all in the same movie. That's quite a feat; and I recommend this film for fans of John Waters movies but also for people who enjoy comedies that involve social commentary. Great!

5 out of 5 stars How is the new movie going to top this?.......2007-06-05

Honestly, I don't know.

I first became aware of Hairspray when I was 12-years-old(in the early 90's). It aired on Network television and I can't tell you how much I loved it! The music, the clothes, the dancing, and the poignant message of racial segregation had me riveted.

John Waters is notorious for making campy, sometimes just plain BAD, films. But Hairspray had the right amount of camp and attitude. I've seen the trailers for the new Hairspray film and I just don't see the flash and pizzazz of the original. I think I'll skip the theatre and pop in the DVD.

Fantastic!

Hairspray is a great movie. I don't think the new version coming up in the summer will reach its toes. The original Hairspray has the talented Ricki Lake who does an awesome part in this role. Great movie and talented actors!!

This is the movie that made John Waters famous, and quite possibly the film that made bad taste cool. Yes, Virginia, a large transvestite actually eats dog feces as a kind of dizzying denouement to this frequently illogical and intentionally disgusting movie, but by the time that happens, you're already numb ... and you've possibly laughed to the point of losing bladder control.

The plot revolves around two vile families laying claim to the title "The Filthiest People Alive." You've got pregnant women in pits, you've got grown men getting sexual satisfaction from chickens, you've got people licking furniture to perform trailer-park voodoo, and you've got classic lines like: "Oh my God! The couch ... it ... it rejected you!"

Waters, who went on to direct genuine pop-culture classics such as <I>Hairspray</I> and <I>Serial Mom</I>, made this celluloid sideshow with one aim--to make a name for himself. It worked. He does have a genuine eye for filmmaking (when the trailer burns down, you feel the white heat of Divine's pain and anger). On the other hand, you won't notice any disclaimers about stunt doubles and animals not being mistreated. There weren't, and they were. Welcome to the filthiest film in the world. <I>--Grant Balfour</I>

A WOMAN SCREAMING AS SHE'S BEING BRUTALLY RAPED WITH A LIVE CHICKEN BY A MANSONESQUE LUNATIC. HOW CAN ANYONE USE THE WORD "FUNNY" TO DESCRIBE THE TORTURE OF A POOR ANIMAL STRUGGLING IN VAIN TO FREE ITSELF BEFORE IT'S BEATEN TO DEATH? POLYESTER WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES. I DON'T THINK I CAN HANDLE WATCHING IT, OR ANYTHING ELSE BY WATERS AGAIN.

5 out of 5 stars Cotton! Cotton! Tell me about the egg man!.......2007-04-11

Not my favorite of John H2o's films but has some great one liners; "Babs Johnson? Sounds like a monkey on a tire swing!" Cuddles and the eggman...classic!

This page is clearly for the soundtrack CD but the reviews seem to be for the movie. I will comment on the CD. This is a great collection of songs that will get you moving. John Waters has an excellent ear for rock and pop songs. The sound quality is good, especially when you consider how old these recordings are. Whatever you may think of the movie the soundtrack is a lot of fun.

"PINK FLAMINGOS"

Filth to Be Judged By

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Pink Flamingos"--what memories come to mind!!!!!!!!!!!! Perhaps one of the most infamous films of all times shows how trash can be regarded as film---and we love it. This is the movie by which all other trash movies are measured. John Waters' early film has become a classic of bad taste. "Pink Flamingos" is a must see movie and for those of you who have not seen it, run to get a copy--you may never be the same afterwards.
"Pink Flamingos" is the film that called attention to John Waters and his sense of warped talent and this is his hallmark. Divine is "the filthiest person alive' as she says of herself (sexual identification not important). She plays Babs Johnson who lives in a trailer in the area near Baltimore with Cracker, her perverted son and with Edie, the Egg Lady who happens to be Babs's mother. Mom lives in a playpen and eats volumes of eggs dressed in her underwear. Also in the group is Miss Cotton, a pal.
Raymond and Connie Marble work a black market adoption agency in their basement and they want Divine's title of the filthiest person alive so they declare war on her. Babs goes into hiding and the Marbles find her and begin the battle of filth.
I have often wondered if Waters used the film as a ruler to see how far he could go. It is so tasteless and rude that we wonder why it was made and then we find ourselves watching it over and over. It is little more than an exercise in bad taste and is not for the queasy or the faint of heart. It really is not a movie made for review or summary as it is the penultimate bad joke. It is about everything perverse and is a tribute to that. No review can come near describing the movie as it is not just a movie but an experience starring a very fat and ugly drag queen that eats dog poop for no reason whatsoever. But the movie is real, there is no pretense. It manages to make the most disgusting character in film appear to be endearing in a really sick way.
Some say it is nothing more than distasteful while I say it is a sign of the times and the direction in which America was going. This is the one that says "we did it all" and nothing s left to the imagination. Waters has pulled all the perversity of the world into one film. It is hard to decide whether to laugh or to groan but I must admit that there is something about "Pink Flamingos" that Makes me watch every so often. Bad taste or not, I love this movie--I suppose I am as tasteless as the people that made the film and I am damned proud of that.

After forming a match made in trash-movie heaven in John Waters's <I>Polyester</I>, Tab Hunter and Divine reunited for this deliciously tasteless Western comedy, which borrows its title from the nickname for <I>Duel in the Sun</I>, the turgid Western that inspired director Paul Bartel's affectionate spoofery. With Hunter wearing two hats as hero and coproducer, the movie indulges its own outrageous excess while staying true to the dustiest traditions of the Western genre. It's just good enough to watch without shame, and rude enough to hide from more offendable members of the family.

Nothing's sacred in Chile Verde, the wild western town where lone gunman Abel Wood (Hunter) arrives after rescuing corpulent saloon singer Rosie Velez (Divine) from being defiled by Hard Case Williams (Geoffey Lewis) and his gang of misfit gunslingers. Saloon owner Marguerita Ventura (Lainie Kazan) gets hot 'n' heavy for Abel's wood, and passions flare up in a race for hidden treasure, the map to which is tattooed in two sections on Rosie's and Marguerita's ample posteriors. To reveal more would spoil the wretched hilarity; one needn't love Westerns to enjoy this pig-wallow of a comedy, but it helps if you know the legacy of screen villains like Henry Silva, who's riotous here while barely shifting his vile expression. No doubt, this is the wackiest Western that ever cooked under the "blistering, burning, blazing, scorching, roasting, toasting, baking, boiling, broiling, steaming, searing, sizzling, grilling, smoldering, very <I>hot</I> New Mexico sun." <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

I notice some seriously humor-impaired reviews here, but this is one of the movies I can watch over and over and never get tired of(Mad Mad Mad Mad World and anything by Laurel and Hardy are some others). Just fantastic-Cesar Romero and Lainie Kazan are great, as is the whole cast. IMHO the whole movie is about perfect.

4 out of 5 stars A Shicken.......2007-05-24

A Hysterical Romp that you have to watch over and over to truly appreciate. Divine is just that and Lainie Kazan is a treat.

1 out of 5 stars Rust In The Dust ~ Anything But Divine.......2006-09-20

'Lust in the Dust' released in '84 is an irreverent parody on spaghetti westerns that just doesn't hit the target. I did enjoy Tab Hunter doing his best Clint Eastwood impersonation in the role of gunfighter/drifter Abel Wood and Gina Gallego was a lovely addition as working girl Ninfa, however that is the extent of anything positive I have to say about this film. I'm not a prude by any means and can on occasion enjoy low brow humour as well as the next guy but this movie couldn't ellicit as much as one laugh out of me.

Lesson for Today: Irreverent and crude doesn't necessarily translate into funny and entertaining. For Divine fans only.

5 out of 5 stars How the West was Hilarious.......2006-07-03

This is one of the funniest Divine movies out there. It's tame compared to his other movies, but "Lust" is my favorite of all his movies. If you're looking for a good laugh, but this!

John Waters expands the definition of <I>female trouble</I> in this mutant tribute to good-girl-gone-bad drive-in melodramas. The girl is, of course, cross-dressing cult icon Divine, Waters's plus-sized muse. Divine is at her most gleefully outrageous as teenage brat Dawn Davenport, who runs away from home and into a life of wanton hedonism all because she didn't get cha-cha heels for Christmas. Almost immediately she's molested by a sleazy motorcycle thug (also played by Divine--is this Waters's idea of "love thyself"?), but she doesn't let motherhood interfere with her plans of stardom and turns herself into an unlikely fashion statement in an apocalyptic fashion show. Waters's fourth feature, a follow-up to the midnight movie hit <I>Pink Flamingos</I>, is just as cinematically primitive and even more gleefully vulgar, right down to the electric climax of Dawn's road to everlasting fame. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

Female trouble is the peak of john water's career.. it is his sergent pepper.. his mona lisa.. It is the movie divine was born to star in.. not quite the gross out fest as 'pink flamingo's' it is nevertheless as outrageous and fun to watch.. it features many of waters' flock from previous films.. including the sublime edith massey.. who's voice is as delightful as nails on a chalk board.. pure fun: excess, absurdity, and obscene glamor..

5 out of 5 stars My favorite From John h2o's.......2007-04-11

I still laugh out load to this one. By far my favorite of all his flicks. Devine at her pinnacle.

5 out of 5 stars Not on Christmas, Not on Christmas!!!!.......2007-03-06

Yes!! On Christmas or any other holiday. One of Divine's and Waters' best movies. Not for the faint hearted. However, if you are a fan of Divine or Waters, this is not to be missed.

Divine chews up the script and scenery with her portriat of Dawn Davenport acting like an overweight Liz Taylor.

The story line is great as well as all the other characters in this film.

In my opinion, this movie is up there with Citizen Kane and Rules of the Game. A must for any person who loves camp and trash.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give it more stars!.......2007-01-27

I know almost every line in this movie by heart. Divine chews up the screen as Dawn Davenport. The late and great Edith Massey is a scream as Aunt Ida. So sad that these two are no longer with us.

John Waters is one of the best film makers ever.

5 out of 5 stars Ever Since I've Watched This Movie, My Life Has Been Like a Vacation!.......2006-10-25

Tawdry and scandalous, John Waters creates the ultimate star vehicle for the incomparable Divine. Combining themes involving juvenile delinquency, celebrating holidays with the family, the perils of hitchiking, fashion, childbirth and single motherhood, the seduction of fame and glamour, robbery, murder, and ultimately, incarceration, Divine more than rises to the occasion, chewing the scenery right and left. She gives a fearless performance that equals and even surpasses Susan Hayward's in that other dramatic woman-behind-bars weepie, "I Want To Live!". Imagine a star vehicle with the both of them! Oh, if only Dawn Davenport and Barbara Graham could have been cell-mates to the bitter end, what a movie THAT would have been!

But I digress ...

Director John Waters broke new boundaries of bad taste with this hilariously trashy tale of suburban misadventure. His favorite leading lady, transvestite Divine, plays Francine Fishpaw, a dissatisfied suburban housefrau who longs for a little romance in her life because her husband and children drive her crazy. Salvation arrives in the form of Tod Tomorrow (Tab Hunter), a drive-in owner who sweeps Francine off her feet (a mean task, given Divine's girth). But he's not all he's cracked up to be. Filmed in the miracle of Odorama, video viewers now have to imagine the scents (actually, odors) that came on the Odorama scratch-and-sniff card during the film's theatrical release. It won't be too hard. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

5 out of 5 stars One of John Water's best.......2007-06-02

Not all of John Water's films are great, but this one is. Full of absurb humor a campy aesthetic. The Odorama card included is fun to scratch and sniff while watching the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Tad, be gentle!.......2007-04-11

This one ties with Desperate Living as my second favorite by John h20's. My favorite scene; Elmer Fishpaw driving around the neighborhood in a van with a loud speaker making announcements about his estranged wife. "She eats an entire cake in one sitting!"
Poor Francine, the main character played by Devine, even her mom is against her. She bursts into the bathroom where Francine is on the toilet; "I dont know why you bother, you've always retained your fluids!" Great cult flick.

5 out of 5 stars "For a quarter I will!".......2007-01-12

I love John Waters and will watch anything he creates. Polyester is one of my favorites. Silly, campy, and just a bit off and I love it. Hundred's of quotable lines and funny moments. If you like John Waters and haven't seen this, get it.

5 out of 5 stars A hillarious mockery of Americana!.......2007-01-08

John Waters is written all over the place in this one! Everything about suburban middle class Americana is lampooned in Polyester! Divine's mother sums up the whole thesis of this movie when she utters the epitome of the American Dream...-"Free, White, Rich and Happy!"

Divine plays Francine Fishpaw, a 30'ish housewife trying HIr best to live the American Dream. Except that HIr husband is a fat loudmouth pornographer! And HIr son is a glue sniffing foot fetishist! And HIr daughter is a punk whore who goes out with the slimiest guy in town! And HIr mother is a gold digging witch! And HIr dog hangs itself on the refrigerator! And HIr best friend is the deliciously ugly Edith Massey! And HIr new lover, Todd Tomorrow, (Tab Hunter) is in cahoots with HIr mother to inherit the house and Divine's American Dream!

My favorite scene is where Divine (Francine Fishpaw) goes to her first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting! The attendees mercilessly taunt and coach her to say the "Magic Words"---"I'm Francine Fishpaw! And I am an alcohoooooolic!" and they all cheer!

As if the theme and plot isn't zany enough for you, John Waters adds the spectacle of "ODORAMA" to the movie. At predictable times in the film a number flashes, to have you scratch and sniff the corrosponding number on you "odorama" card to enjoy, for the first time, SMELLEVISION! Smell all the delightful smells of Divine's life, from old moldy sneakers, to farts, to gasoline!

This is perhaps the only John Waters movie you can enjoy with your parents, providing your parents are from the Manson Family!

I get it that this is a cult movie for afficionados of John Waters.

None of that changes the fact that it has not aged well, despite the fact that Tab Hunter IS kind of cute.

Okay, I do kind of like the "odorama" gimmick. But that's not enough to redeem this seedy, pseudo-subversive film. I do understand that the obvious charges against it -- sad, sorry, sexist, stupid, stereotyped, shoddy, etc. -- are beside the point; the response from defenders can only be "DUH!" Of course that's the point. Outrage! (with a capital O!!)

But really is that enough of a point? No, I don't think so. This bizarre and tired film will deservedly sink to oblivion with (not very much more) time -- and good luck to it! I wouldn't wish watching it on my worst enemy. Life is too short to spend ANY of it on such low-budget dreck.

I definitely recommend against wasting your money here!

4 out of 5 stars Great bikini movies!.......2006-05-21

For what they are, BIKINI CHAIN GANG and BIKINI AIRWAYS (and yes, this is a double-feature, even though this is not obvious from the cover) are great soft-core porn movies. Is anyone going to rank these with SCHINDLER'S LIST? Boy, I hope not. If they do, they certainly have something to learn about the taxonomy of movies.

The forte of these movies is their preponderance of nudity; sexy strip teases, spontaneous scenes of women taking their shirts off, steamy sex scenes, etc. On all of these accounts, the film scores quite high. And, in fact, is this not why you would buy this DVD in the FIRST place?

There was only one girl whom I did'nt find attractive. Unfortunately, she's in both films. She has a nice body, but I didn't think she was very pretty. Kind of a biker chick with tatts. Even so, there are enough other hot babes to make up for her.

So, if you have an interest in pretty much any movie that begins with "Bikini" then these flicks are for you. If your expectations on acting, plot, direction and everything else but eroticism are kept low, then you'll be all-set!

5 out of 5 stars What's better than a bikini movie? Two bikini movies!.......2006-03-27

Bikini Chain Gang/Bikini Airways is a great DVD release from Retromedia. Bikini Chain Gang is the main feature and is one of the best bikini movies they've ever done. It adheres to the classic "girls in prison" formula almost perfectly. Jessie (Beverly Lynne) is arrested for a crime she didn't commit and sent to prison. Of course you've got the corrupt warden, the tough head guard (Nicole Sheridan), and a bunch of hot female inmates having sex with the guards and each other. The only thing missing was a shower scene.

There are six sex scenes. Four are boy/girl, one is boy/girl/girl, and one is girl/girl. All of them are excellent. All the women are attractive and hot and do a great job in the sex scenes. In addition to Beverly and Nicole, the rest of the female cast includes Belinda Gavin, Brooke Taylor, and Jassie.

Bikini Airways is the bonus feature. It wasn't as good as Chain Gang, but was still good softcore and really made this DVD a great value. Terri (Regina Russell) inherits an airline from a deceased uncle. In order to generate much needed revenue, she decides to use their only jet to throw a bachelor party for a rich guy.

There are seven sex scenes. Six are boy/girl and one is girl/girl/girl. The first two weren't very impressive and they were the only two scenes for the first half of the movie. But during the second half, the heat gets turned up for the remaining five, which were much better. The women here are also attractive and hot. In addition to Regina, we get Belinda Gavin again, Amy Lindsay, Loni Lynn, and Wendy Devine.

Two bikini films on one DVD at a good price. This is very recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Can't help liking this one.......2005-08-11

Ok, yes this is your typical late night cable cheesey soft-core. But for some reason I enjoy it more than most in it's genre.

I agree with the other reviewers here, the guys have annoying lobotomized looks on their faces and the sex scenes are definitely on the soft side, but some of the ladies are quite sexy and darn it, somehow that high school cafeteria-style humour just gets to me.

That's why I've got to give it 5 stars. Because this is a slightly funny, fairly sexy movie that doesn't take itself seriously, and doesn't resort to the tired cliche of random murder scenes as a plot frame.

After seeing the same soft-core murder-mystery plot re-done a million times, this goofy, half-baked sex romp is actually refreshing, in fact, it's almost endearing.

Hey at least they're trying to be creative!

3 out of 5 stars Warning: the ratio of comedy to sex is out of whack here.......2005-06-20

Terri (Regina Russell) inherits Janus Airways with its one airplane from her uncle Hugh Janus (say his name once or twice until you get the joke). She needs $25,000 to pay off the airlines debts and comes up with the idea of having girls in bikinis man the ticket counter to inspire clients. Many are inspired, but no one actually buys any tickets. Fortunately, rich guy Gary (Brad Bartram) has to get to his wedding in Miami to Francine (Wendy Divine), and since the girls in the bikinis were going to be the entertainment at his bachelor's party, Terri comes up with the bright idea of flying Gary to Miami and having his bachelor party on the flight (take a wild guess how much it will cost Gary).

This 2003 direct to video movie is your standard late night cable combination of soft core and soft comedy, the later provided by Captain Sam (Jay Richardson) and Dave (Sam Silver), who do their shtick with no concern for whether or not it is funny. Still, Richardson gets credit for being for nailing all of the bad jokes and being the only actor in the film totally at ease with his character and the story line, mainly because he does not have to do anything but watch the half-dozen sex scenes that are the main selling point of "Bikini Airways." The verdict is that the scenes involving the women (Kylie Biscayne as Vicki, Loni Lynn as Traci, and Julie Snow as Pam) are better than those involving the guys on the plane for the simple reason that the guys (Leland Jay as Jeff, Frankie Cullen as David, and Noah Frank as Jim) have this silly sophomoric grins on their faces before, during and after the sex scenes. I see those looks on their face and I do not think that these guys are lucky, I just think they are idiots, which is probably not the point and strongly suggests I am not this film's target audience.

There is an element of mystery here because we are pretty sure Terri and Gary have to end up together, since their names come first in the credits, and it only takes one phone call from Gary to his fiancé to convince us that the nuptials will not be taking place (although the incompetence of the pilots is potentially another reason there will be no wedding). This matters because Terri is part of the "serious" sex scenes that bookend "Bikini Airways." Everybody else is just having sex, but Terri is having sex with the man she loves (it just happens to be a different man at the end than it was in the beginning). The strange thing is that the humor is probably better in than the sex in this film, and you know that just cannot be right.

"Bikini Airways" might not be as titillating as you would like, but the kitchen sink approach with regards to the humor manages to save it from being an offensive example of this genre. The end title promised a film to be entitled "Bikini Frankenstein," but apparently the movie has yet to be made, and I have to admit I am ambivalent about such news...

1 out of 5 stars Who writes this stuff?.......2005-02-27

There is in no way anything in this film that could even remotely be mistaken for hard core content. It was with out a doubt one of the most disappointing films I've ever seen and wouldn't even classify this as soft core. My advice to anyone who's out shopping for films of a truly adult nature is that they ignore the reviews listed by wanna be film critics who wouldn't know a good film if it fell out of the sky, landed on their face, and started to wiggle. Go online and find real info about the films you are interested in, or narrow certain studios that you know turn out quality work. This piece just wasn't even worth the plastic it was re-mastered on.

Independent producer and author John Pierson (<I>Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes</I>) defines the 1970s American indie scene as "the three Johns: John Cassavetes, John Sayles, and John Waters." John Waters, Baltimore's king of sleaze, in such classy company? According to Pierson in this 1998 documentary, Waters had an even more profound impact on American cinema. Director Steve Yeager, a Waters intimate for decades (he plays a bit part in <I>Pink Flamingos</I>), gathers the surviving members of his stock company for a portrait of the director, from backyard puppet show impresario to the transgressive underground and exploitation director who grossed out America in the 1970s. A generous array of film clips is enriched with archival interviews with Divine, David Lochary, and Edith Massey, and a chorus of film critics and underground and independent directors.<P> Fully half of the film chronicles the making of <I>Pink Flamingos</I>, with actual behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot (including the most priceless direction ever captured on film: "David, act some more"). A plentiful portion pays tribute to Divine ("the Godzilla of drag queens"), whom Waters calls "my Elizabeth Taylor." The only real disappointment in this rich and highly entertaining documentary is that it ends with <I>Flamingos</I>, as if his entire career since is a mere coda to this cultural touchstone. But this portrait is so rich and detailed that it's a forgivable directorial choice. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

5 out of 5 stars The "Brain" behind the "Beauty!".......2007-04-14

All freaks and weird people have experienced, by now, the absolute beauty and glamor if the 300 lb monstrosity, "Divine!" But what kind of Frankenstein could have created "HIr?" This little movie provides the answer!

Of course, the answer is: the deliciously hillarious perverted mind of John Waters! William S. Burroughs coined him as "The Pope Of Trash!" Yet Waters was raised normally in an upper class Baltimore family! Is it his fault that he became as a child obsessed with car accidents, trials of murderers and sleasy "B" movies? How could such environmental influences create the most tastefully outrageous antics depicted in his earlier films? This movie provides the answer!

There is a difference between mere shocking bad taste and bad taste that is so good that it generates a cult following! Here we see the delicious Divine give interviews that are as shocking as HIr films! We see the deliciously ugly Edith Massey glory in her new roles of glamor and stardom in John's movies. We see the hours and hours of rehearsals that Divine and the Dreamlanders did in front of the perfectionist Waters' cameras. There was a lot of work and planning that went on in even the most notorious scene of "Pink Flamingos:" the infamous Dog-Spoor scene!

John Waters.... we all await the day that you can once again release the tiger in you that created your early works! We all are getting too old to be "pattycaked" by your newer works! SHOCK US AGAIN!

5 out of 5 stars Behind the Greatest Movie Ever Made.......2006-10-30

If your mind withstood "Pink Flamingoes", this is the movie for you. More than you ever wanted to know about John Waters and Divine (Peace Be Unto Him/Her).

5 out of 5 stars DIVINE Trash is another mans treasure.......2005-10-02

This is a gr8 documentary on John Waters & DIVINE. Very informative & well put together. Talks about how John got his start in his insane flicks, has a mini interview with Edith Massey, behind the scenes footage & of course this DVD would not be complete without "DIVINE". DIVINE Trash is simply the best garbage i've seen in years. Loaded with unseen video footage & surprises. DIVINE Trash is a MUST 4 any Waters/DIVINE fan. Check it out, U won't regret it!! Schroeder (DJ WACK "O") (ORBITAL TRAXX RECORDS & Cult Movies Magazine).

5 out of 5 stars Yeager is genius.......2005-06-29

I am a growing film maker, and currently belong to a film session, that is directed by this film's director, Mr. Steve Yeager, and he is a good friend of mine. All I'd like to say is that this movie is a great documentary, and if you havent seen it yet, i highly consider it. Steve also mentioned to me that it won "best documentary" in 1998 for the Maryland Film Fest. Pretty impressive! I also think that it is a great film that basically tells the story of the Baltimore-native film maker, John Waters. It includes so great early footage when John's film making was beginning to spark. Interviews with Water's parents, Steve Buschemi, and many more. Mr yeager is a great man, and this documentary is a great film.

5 out of 5 stars A deep meditation on the nature of success.......2004-04-14

First let me say how pleased I was to find this DVD at my local public library!

From there I will go on to say what an impressive piece of work this is. Having long been a fan of the movie Hairspray, which raised my curiosity about Divine in the first place, a natural progression enabled my curiosity about John Waters. This is primarily his story, the story of his work, with plenty of interview time with him. What an intriguing individual! What a creative time and place he lived in! How fortunate for all freedom loving Americans that such explorations were possible in that time and place. I doubt they could ever happen today.

True, the films do seem to be in questionable taste, with little, if any, socially redeeming value. But look closer, and you may find your own reflection. What is the value of shock value? What are its drawbacks? What have we gained? What have we lost?

John Waters was not shallow, nor was he untintelligent. He was creatively inspired, and no matter how we react to his work, react we do. Such is the nature of art.

I feel like I got to know the man just a little, which is exactly what I wanted to do. I understood a little more about his work, and its success. Do I approve? I still don't know, but I do know that whether I approve or not doesn't matter.

I do approve of freedom. I believe that no one was hurt, and that violence was not empowered through the message, which makes many of today's movies filthy in comparison.

John Waters is an interesting individual. It would have been intruging to have been in his entourage. One could not have escaped coming out a changed individual. He created a cocoon, a chrysalis, where larvae were nurtured and outrageous butterflies emerged. They loved what they were doing, and they were successful.

If nothing else, it is a deep meditation on the nature of success in a country that considers it a superior export.

    4 out of 5 stars Forgotten Glam.......2007-04-13

    "The Cockettes"

    Forgotten Glam

    Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

In the documentary "The Cockettes" we are taken back to San Francisco in the 1970's to learn about a theatre group who defied all of the odds and the conventions of society. They all lived together in a commune and they were gay, straight, bi, men, women, whites, blacks etc and they were wonderful. They put on shows that criticized everything and they were mean, sexual, vicious, hilarious and very, very smart. The documentary looks at them--those entertainers that have been unjustly forgotten. The movie will raise your spirits and how you a world most of us did not have the chance to know. Here is acid-trip theatre performed by an outlandish cast of characters who had a lot to do with opening the doors for freedom of expression. Without these characters around today, we are experiencing a great sense of loss--even if we weren't around to appreciate The Cockettes.
The film is an inspiration and even if you have no interest in hippies or drag queens, this is a film you will enjoy. The members of The Cockettes wanted to be stars and therefore they got dressed up in ridiculous outfits, dropped acid regularly and put on "shows" about whatever was of interest to them. They were crazies, had unbridled idealism and were articulate.
Habiscus was their leader. His first brush with fame when he stuck a flower in the barrel of the rifle of a member of the National Guard. He was an enigma in every sense of the word (he has been dead some twenty odd years now). He had a vision but that kind of vision could not be brought to the stage.
Try to imagine that you were told about a wonderful party--that is how you will feel when you se this film. You will just wish you had actually been able to go. The drag and hippie shows of The Cockettes were sensational and are an interesting look at life at that time. The vintage footage of the actual events is amazing. The Cockettes were the single group to bring n the ideas of gender bending and transgressive art. In fact what they really did was little more than have a good time and I had a good time watching them enjoy themselves.
Whether The Cockettes played a part in the gay sexual revolution has not been decided yet. There was then and still is nothing to compare to them. They had great times and it is fun to see them enjoying themselves. This s definitely a movie to see, even if you have no idea of who The Cockettes are. What a wonderful stroll down nostalgia lane.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspirational!.......2005-08-03

I have played this movie at least three times a week since purchasing it. I never tire of it. It gives me inspiration to go out and face an excruciatingly dull and dreary world--even without dropping acid!

5 out of 5 stars a moving view of an amazing period in US history.......2005-03-13

beautifully constructed of original 1960/70s footage and modern day reminiscences--great scenes and great, as well as realistic, view of hippie life and dreams--honestly showing the transformation that commercialization brought to a clearly doomed utopian experiment. If you were there, this is a great memory piece; if you weren't there, this might help you understand the power of that transforming time.

    5 out of 5 stars Capturing Magic!.......2005-01-23

I lived down the street from the Palace Theater in the early 70's and had a chance to see the Cockettes. They were, as the film shows vividly, fabulous! The clothes, the makeup, the in-your-face nonconformity! America has become so bland now in comparison. I love the music in the film, the silent movie quality, and the way they pop back and forth between the survivors and their remembrances. It's visually interesting and the characters draw you into their magical world. They may demonize welfare moms now, but, welfare did give the mentally disabled something creative to do with their time back in the 70's. This is proof positive. Much better than pushing a shopping cart and mumbling, I should say.

    5 out of 5 stars A Complete Surprise.......2003-06-17

As a result of purchasing a used video at a local chain, I saw the preview of this title on the video. Even though I was a young adult at the time, this documentary was a total surprise to me. I knew nothing about this subject, nor had I ever heard any reference to it. Of course I had heard of the "Hippies" and what San Francisco was like at the time.
The interviews with participants, while making this film years later, was fascinating. One can see the devastating result of drugs and AIDS on some of the participants.
I certainly thought it was interesting and very well done. I highly recommend it.
