5 out of 5 stars wally world.......2007-06-08

Every one should watch this documentary. Walmart's corporate policies are not in the best interest of the country. The Walton family should be ashame to be seen in public. To be so wealthy, and to do so little for the less fortunate is incredibly selfish. I haven't shopped at Walmart for many years and unless I see significant improvement in their policies, I won't be shopping there for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars well made and highly informative documentary.......2007-05-19

doesn't tell you much of what wal-mart is doing good, but does show you all the bad. wal-mart is a 'green' corporation, that's one good thing, but for the most part, wal-mart is just as evil as most of the corporations out there, it's all about money. i recommend seeing the documentary 'the corporation' first to get a broader perspectives of the evils of corporations, so that when you watch this you will know it's not only wal-mart contributing these types of injustices. it is the corporate capitalist mindframe, where capital/money takes priority over the life, health, and ultimate well being of consumers (all people, in general). anyways, i recommend this film and i no longer shop at wal-mart but i understand some don't really have a choice, and they do have cheap prices! lol. they definitely are a huge corporate evil tho, next time you go into one, if you do, check out ALLL the cameras they have everywhere. it's a joke! they are soo anti-union it's ridiculous.

5 out of 5 stars even more frightening when put altogether, here.......2007-05-17

Robert Greenwald outdid himself with this one, with more money and time to spend on the project. We all know a little of this Wal-Mart story, but when put together; it is deeply disturbing. Just yesterday I noticed at my chain grocery the McCormick garlic powder is a PRODUCT OF CHINA. 'Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars Must See For WalMart Shoppers.......2007-05-10

WalMart does offer low prices, but do you know how they can keep their prices low? Hiring illegal immigrant workers, setting up factories in China and paying the workers less than $3.00 A DAY! The stories of small town businesspeople having to close their family stores were especially poignant, as well as the interviews with exploited overseas workers in Walmart's sweatshops. Even one of the company's plant inspectors said he just cried when he went back to his hotel after his first inspection. We learn that because staff wages and benefits are so pitifully meager, thousands upon thousands of Wal-Mart employees in numerous states qualify for and regularly receive benefits from public assistance programs, even as they work.
As long as consumers think only of their own bottom line - buying everything they want at the absolute lowest price every time, never connecting the dots between low price, lousy service, substandard employment conditions, financial drains on the public sector, and the loss of fondly recalled small businesses - WalMart will continue to eat away at our culture, parasitically suck away on our national nutrient resources, all the while building up its corporate treasures into a war chest to combat any and all challenges to its destructive excesses. If you shop at WalMart, I really think you should see this video.

5 out of 5 stars A Luddite's Delight---Yet Remember,American Values are to Blame........2007-05-02

This is an interesting documentary. If i was to tell people ,throughout the hinterland, that the Chinese communists are taking over.People would freak out and seek them out for seditious acts. The best way someone can support a communist is simply to buy a product that states,'Made in China'.So all the fears of communism,if you buy goods that carry a label,'Made in China',are unfounded. The average communist worker gets very little for their labor input and are exploited by the party bosses. There's a 'Catch-22' here. The party bosses tell the workers that they must work harder to avoid being the slaves of sado-christian-capitalism.Yet,their cheap labor entices foreign investment and demand for their low-cost products. The Socialist labor bosses ,who arranged the exported shipments to America, are indifferent to the destruction of American owned stores and businesses. The Chinese socialists also do not care about the Arkansas protestant business people, who will be consolidated back with the Roman catholics anyway. So,if you want to see the last vestiges of America's Main Street disappear, than buy the label,'Made in China'.Documentary is of par excellence quality,'Made in the U.S.A.'.

Before Kevin Smith became a Hollywood darling with <I>Chasing Amy</I>, a film he wrote and directed, he made this $27,000 comedy about real-life experiences working for chump change at a New Jersey convenience store. A rude, foul-mouthed collection of anecdotes about the responsibilities that go with being on the wrong side of the till, the film is also a relationship story that takes some hilarious turns once the lovers start revealing their sexual histories to one another. In the best tradition of first-time, ultra-low budget independent films, Smith uses <I>Clerks</I> as an audition piece, demonstrating that he not only can handle two-character comedy but also has an eye for action--as proven in a smoothly handled rooftop hockey scene. Smith himself appears as a silent figure who hangs out on the fringes of the store's property. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

If you're in the market for wildly funny entertainment, CLERKS delivers with wholesale hilarity! It's one wacky day in the life of a pair of overworked counter jockeys whose razor-sharp wit and on-the-job antics give a whole new meaning to customer service! Even while bracing a nonstop parade of unpredictable shoppers, the clerks manage to play hockey on the roof, visit a funeral home, and straighten out their offbeat love lives! The boss is nowhere in sight, so you can bet anything can -- and will -- happen when these guys are left to run the store.

4 out of 5 stars Such a great value........2007-06-15

If you love, like, or kinda dig kevin smith films, or just his style of film making, this edition of clerks is a great buy. They cover almost every aspect of the films making, even listing expenses at one point. talking about cast disagreements, and all with the kevin smith tongue in cheek style. I am glad I bought it.

2 out of 5 stars Cult classic but probably best if you're on medication of some sort.......2007-05-11

Yes, this is deemed a cult classic however, it is full of poorly delivered dialogue and cheesy one-liners. I would imagine it would be far more entertaining under the influence. Silent Bob is the best actor in the whole thing ... imagine that.

2 out of 5 stars Funny, But Not Worth The Hype.......2007-04-07

Clerks has some funny moments, but overall, i felt like it was a bit too long for such a pointless plot (or lack of it). I don't see why this movie is so hyped, i was expecting to get more laughs from it. I dunno, i just didn't find it as hilarious as people make it out to be. It's just an okay, mediocre, decent comedy.

2 out of 5 stars Highly overrated.......2007-04-02

I seem to be one of the few people who didn't like this movie. People either seem to love or hate this movie. It's obvious in the reviews. Those that love it would be more likely to comment, so I suggest that if you are considering seeing this movie, look for the negitive comments to get a balance.
No one talks like they did in the film. I've met a broad spectrum of people from every conceivable profession and, none of them spoke the way the people in this piece-of-crap film do. This movie is so overrated its not even slightly funny.

5 out of 5 stars A cult classic by Kevin Smith.......2007-02-09

If somebody will tell you, that you can not make a good movie without a budget for sets, extras and special effects, show him this movie and proof him wrong.

90%+ of the whole movie happens within or in front of a small service store (just like the gas station stores, without the gas station). The rest happens on the roof of the store, the neighbouring video rental store and If I counted correctly one off site location for a single less than a minute scene.

The humor is hilarious and down to earth. The real aspect of the conversations makes the movie so great. The long awaited sequel Clerks 2 did fall a bit short regarding that.

The Jokes (verbal and practical) are for adults and not kids. Foul language is being used, but last time I checked on the street, it's being used there too :).

While it suffered a nearly unanimous beating from critics, <I>The Girl Next Door</I> attracted more than a few loyal defenders during its brief box-office lifespan. It pales when compared to its teen-comedy role model (the 1983 classic <I>Risky Business</I>), but you've got to admit that <I>any</I> movie about a teenager whose new next-door neighbor is a 19-year-old former porn star has bona fide cult-movie potential. To its credit, this rather schizoid blend of sleaze and comedy boasts an engaging pair of costars in Emile Hirsch (as the smitten, voyeuristic virgin) and <I>24</I>'s Elisha Cuthbert (as his sexy new house-sitting neighbor). And there are some good laughs in a script that takes unexpected turns when we learn that Cuthbert's character is trying to leave her porn-star past behind, to the chagrin of her pimp-like producer (Timothy Olyphant, in a scene-stealing role). Faring somewhat better than he did with the Rob Schneider non-comedy <I>The Animal</I>, director Luke Greenfield clearly recalls the turbulence that goes hand-in-hand with being young, horny, and confused. There's honesty and even (dare we say it?) maturity to be found in this raging-hormone fantasy, even if it's partially buried in a convoluted plot that's appalling or appealing, depending on your tolerance for good-natured prurience. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

Eighteen-year-old Matthew Kidman (Emile Hirsch) is a straight-laced overachiever who has never really lived life - until he falls for his hot new neighbor (Elisha Cuthbert). When Matthew discovers his perfect "girl next door" is a former porn star, his sheltered existence spins out of control. It's "Risky Business" meets "American Pie" (Premiere Radio Networks) in this "titillating, laugh-out-loud funny comedy!" (US Weekly)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Darker than I expected.......2007-06-15

When I picked up this movie, I was thinking it was going to a smutty comedy along the lines of American Pie / Risky Business / Porky's. It turned out to be a bit darker than I expected, with some not so funny parts and some downright grim realities coupled in with it.

Matt is a stereotypical "nice guy" who has an ordinary high school career, not very popular, not very exciting, and a bit on the dull side. One day, a beautiful girl moves in next door and he is smitten. Much to his surprise, he discovers Danielle is a 19 year old former adult film star. That is, she's every horny teenage boy's dream come true. She's running away from the life, and doesn't want anything to do with it anymore. But she's being stalked by ghosts from the past, her manager is looking to make his investment back and he'll stop at nothing to get her back into his movies. Soon he and his friends propose making their own movie to pay him off once and for all, and even offer some of the other popular boys to be in it. They get many offers, and suddenly things are looking up for Matt.

What a movie like this says about our culture cannot possibly be summed up in a review like this. There are so many layers to this. The porn industry, while it seems exciting and glamourous on the outside, is really a horrifying place where women are mislead, abused, and intimidated into preforming. Danielle wants nothing else but to escape, and she's being stalked by the monsters who have lured her in. Matt sees her on one hand as his ultimate object of desire, and ends up falling for her. (Fiction!) Matt seems to be a nice guy, but he seems to hold this porn star girlfriend closer to him for the fact that she's a former porn star and not just "the girl next door".

Perhaps the most telling of events is when they are going to film the porn movie in the library of their school. When they talk the popular boys into doing it, they jump at the chance thinking that it will enhance their status. And the one who seems the biggest and strongest of them all can't preform. Stuck in the situation, Matt at first volonteers to be the one, but he can't do it. He loves Danielle too much to degrade her again. So his friend volonteers (the biggest laugh of the movie, when he appears on camera with the fencing mask on). And I had the best thought of the entire movie when he did that. I just thought "Wow, what a good friend". Perhaps that was the most noble thing of them all.

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise.......2007-05-30

I first rented this so that I would just kill some time. I was expecting a silly movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. I had to buy it. The acting is excellent and the ages of the actors is very close to the ages of the characters. This is a teenage movie for adults. It has its crazy moments, but in the end it's a love story.

I'm glad that it didn't do well at the box office. If it did, a sequel would been made.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Flick for fans of John Hughes and 80's Growing Up movies!.......2007-05-24

So one night when the wife was away i decided to bring some easy on the eyes, hollywood pap, home with me from the video store where i worked. I picked the girl next door based purely on the picture on the cover. I didn't want something too involving. I had seen the trailer some time before and it seemed to be an 'American Pie' kind of movie....

Well, i was wrong. I sat in amazement the whole length of the movie, dumbfounded that it was so good. SO GOOD!. It takes alot of it's influence from another of my favorites, Risky Business. It's not a remake and it's not a sequel. it's more of an homage. It's far better than if it were a remake. It really is just a joy to watch. I told my wife about it when she got back, and she kind of rolled her eyes and said 'yeah, okay, lets watch it'. An hour and a half later of staring, jaw dropped, at the screen, she turned to me and said just one word: "GENIUS!"

Really, it's up there with Risky Business and Ferris Buellers Day Off. It's a movie about growing up that we can all relate to. This is the kind of movie that changes a persons perspective on life. Amazing cast. Amazing SoundTrack! All over, great film!

2 out of 5 stars The politically correct girl next door........2007-04-23

This movie never gets off the ground, due to "political correctness", i did see it's potential wasted in almost every scene.every scene had the chance to become outragesly funny but never takes off. theres almost no nudity, none by the female lead at all, all punchline and no joke with this movie. typical politically correct movie for these days.

4 out of 5 stars unexpected.......2007-03-10

You might think from the title and the commercials this movie is about a super sexy porn star slut...but it's actually the opposite. I really liked how the movie was done to portray the struggles some girls really have to go through in their carrers and mixed it with the toughness of high school.
This is definately a movie i would reccomend to people over like 16 but only if you want to watch a funny movie about the discovering and strength of two people...This movie is the real thing, i enjoyed it and i think many other people could too.

The recipe for <I>Blade</I> is quite simple; you take one part <I>Batman</I>, one part horror flick, and two parts kung fu and frost it all over with some truly campy acting. What do you get? An action flick that will reaffirm your belief that the superhero action genre did not die in the fluorescent hands of Joel Schumacher. <I>Blade</I> is the story of a ruthless and supreme vampire slayer (Wesley Snipes) who makes other contemporary slayers (Buffy <I>et al.</I>) look like amateurs. Armed with a samurai sword made of silver and guns that shoot silver bullets, he lives to hunt and kill "Sucker Heads." Pitted against our hero is a cast of villains led by Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), a crafty and charismatic vampire who believes that his people should be ruling the world, and that the human race is merely the food source they prey on. Born half-human and half-vampire after his mother had been attacked by a blood-sucker, Blade is brought to life by a very buff-looking Snipes in his best action performance to date. Apparent throughout the film is the fluid grace and admirable skill that Snipes brings to the many breathtaking action sequences that lift this movie into a league of its own. The influence of Hong Kong action cinema is clear, and you may even notice vague impressions of Japanese <I>anime</I> sprinkled innovatively throughout. Dorff holds his own against Snipes as the menacing nemesis Frost, and the grizzly Kris Kristofferson brings a tough, cynical edge to his role as Whistler, Blade's mentor and friend. Ample credit should also go to director Stephen Norrington and screenwriter David S. Goyer, who prove it is possible to adapt comic book characters to the big screen without making them look absurd. Indeed, quite the reverse happens here: Blade comes vividly to life from the moment you first see him, in an outstanding opening sequence that sets the tone for the action-packed film that follows. From that moment onward you are pulled into the world of Blade and his perpetual battle against the vampire race. <I>--Jeremy Storey</I>

1 out of 5 stars 1 and 1/2 hours of my life I'll never get back.......2007-05-28

dont even bother, unless you're just in it for the fashion and score (some nice techno sounds).

4 out of 5 stars Wesley Snipes is unbelievable in this movie.......2007-04-04

This is a great movie. Wesley is perfect in the role of Blade and Stephen Dorff makes an excellent baddie. It's fast paced, hard hitting from the very beginning and always has me gripped to the end. The fight scenes are brilliant as are the effects. I think the reason I liked it so much was the humor of the characters, it was done in a way that although the film is great it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Many films have been made with vampire subject matter being the main focus. It seems everybody has their take on vampire lore, be it the cross, the silver, the garlic, the aversion to sunlight, whatever. Some of those ideas are included here. The storyline is familiar... a group of vampires conspire to take over the world, with one person (mainly) standing in their way. Blade (Wesley Snipes) lives for the sole purpose of the destruction of the vampires masses, who have slowly but surely moved into the world, and share it with humankind. For the most part, the human race is blind to the fact that vampires exist all around them. The vampires have even taken familiars, people who aspire to be vampires and do the vampires' dirty work for them to show how worthy they are of eventually being "turned."

I just loved the special effects in this movie as well. From the blood-soaked vampire-style rave, all the way to the inevitable fight scene at the end. There's certainly enough blood and gore to go around, but after all, this is a vampire movie. The various shapes and sorts of weaponry Blade uses are fairly unique, and not generally used in contemporary action films. Snipes have more flair with a decked-out sword than he does with, say, a machine gun. Plus, there's so much more thought that goes into fighting with a blade than just blowing someone away. "Blade" isn't exactly like the comic books, but it is a great adaptation to this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Blade.......2007-03-22

I have bought all of the blade movies. I decided to watch it again the other day and had almost finished the movie when it quit and I had to eject the dvd. I had bought this used but never watched it. I threw it in the trash and ordered a new one. I love the blade movies and Wesley Snipes is great in all of them. I also like kris christofferson. This is a movie that is exciting from beginning to end. Pop you some popcorn, get a coke and sit back and enjoy this movie. This deserves a five star rateing.

5 out of 5 stars Blade is a must see!.......2007-02-21

You don't even have to like comic books to enjoy Blade, featuring Wesley Snipes! The first 10 minutes are more action packed than other blockbusters like Bad Boys, and that is partly what makes this movie a huge success.

After watching this movie again today, it struck me how many other action movies of that time period (late 90's) copy from Blade. There is a scene where Snipes meets Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff) in a park and Frost dodges bullets from Snipes assault weapon. Does the Matrix ring a bell?

Other than X-Men 2 & Spider Man 2, this is my favorite Marvel Comics movie adaptation! For every succesful film, seems like there are 3 or 4 duds from Marvel ie, Daredevil, Fantastic 4, Punisher, The Avengers, Ghost Rider, for example.

I've been a big fan of Wesley Snipes since Major League and he brings Blade, slicing to life!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-02-15

You gotta love Vampire movies, and this is the best of the blade series.

This love story made in 1955 and set against the backdrop of war is a many-splendored thing: it features a drop-dead gorgeous Eurasian doctor seeking meaning in her life (Jennifer Jones), a dashing but married American war correspondent who's macho yet not afraid to declare his love (William Holden), and a couple of murky subplots to give their relationship its oh-what's-going-to-happen-next edge (her Chinese heritage, his wife, the outbreak of the Korean War). One scene builds beautifully upon the next, accompanied by dialogue that often sounds like poetry: "I will make no mistakes in the name of loneliness," the doctor says near the beginning of their relationship. The movie also makes few mistakes as it combines thoughtful words with Oscar-winning costumes to tell its tale. It even leaves you with a hummable tune--the Academy Award-winning title song--as you reach for the Kleenex. <I>--Valerie J. Nelson</I>

Description

Newsman Mark Elliott is an American war correspondent temporarily staying in Hong Kong during the Korean War. While there he meets and pursues a beautiful Eurasian Doctor. But when they begin to fall in love, their friends and families pressure them to stop the cross cultural relationship.

....You won't ever find a more sincere or sensitive love story on film the likes of this one...it is singular...to its time in history [rampant prejudice-war-interracial love] all frowned upon by society the world over..it was a harbinger/film coming on like a typhoon that crashed through the angst of interracial love [then]...as we have accepted it and it is commonplace today...a wonderful extra feature is the talk-over by: Sylvia Stoddard-Michael Lonzo-John Burlingame that spells out the veracity related to the social aspects [then], that some viewers may overlook while taking in Jennifer Jones in that aqua/blue Chinese dress...WoW...and Bill Holden's captivating star appeal..screen/writer John Patrick at his very best makes all the sense to the message of this film on location in Hong Kong....add the utterly distinctive music arrangement by Alfred Newman, nonpareil...good strong character/supporting actors and actresses permeate to blend this entire love/story in the Far East to every viewer's rapt anticipation, and with the cusp of war breaking out in Korea adds to the whole engrossing story unfolding there in those times of yesteryear...a bitter-sweet love story and a haunting love song by Fain & Webster that will never fade away on any windy hill; in fact, the song won the Academy award as best song of the year and deservedly so...just a Terrific movie[DVD].......SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF

5 out of 5 stars Symbolism at its best... .......2007-04-10

This 1955 movie is about the struggle between honor, propriety, cross cultural relationships, and love. The story develops with two people who fall in love. Jennifer Jones plays the part of an Eurasian doctor, a widow, a woman who has resigned herself to the care of others and promises never to allow her heart to open up to another relationship.

William Holden plays newsman Mark Elliott, a dashing correspondent, a gentle and virile man who has the patience and the subtleness to spark the necessary fire for her to allow herself to find new meaning to her life. But, he is a married man.

As she says... "look at the faces of unhappy people who don't have the love we share!" There is much going on around this lovely couple, communism is surfacing all over China, the Korean War calls William Holden away, she travels back to China to visit her family and bravely confronts her relative with the news that she wants to marry out of her own culture, a foreigner, an American. He travels to ask his wife for a divorce, which she at first grants, only to later deny him his freedom.

Throughout the movie we are at the edge of our seat... what will happen next? The dialogue between these two human beings is superb, capturing the struggle and ending in poetic promises of honor and ardent love.

The costumes are simply magnificent as she wears silk Chinese suits, and he... simply continues to capture the hearts of audiences. My favorite part is the symbolism shared by this movie, with butterflies providing the essence of the transformation the characters undergo as they interface and fall in love with one another. And the theme music of this movie is unforgettable... you will find yourself humming away for days after you watch and enjoy... Love is a many splendorous thing!

This DVD offers additional features, and the biography of William Holden alone is enough for us to want to own this classic in our collection. It provides a rare and intimate view of the life of one of Hollywood's greatest actors, allowing us to see his wife and children. Did not know that Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelley, and Stephanie Powers had all been... leading ladies of William Holden... both on screen... and in real life. Don't miss this movie... we cried while watching... and loved every minute of it!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Touching Love Story.......2007-03-09

Jennifer Jones and William Holden are the epitome of CLASS! They are a couple you just continue to root for throughout the movie. The scenery and a peek into a different culture also impressed me. I am so happy this came out on DVD.

Director William Friedkin was a hot ticket in Hollywood after the success of The French Connection, and he turned heads (in more ways than one) when he decided to make The Exorcist as his follow-up film. Adapted by William Peter Blatty from his controversial bestseller, this shocking 1973 thriller set an intense and often-copied milestone for screen terror with its unflinching depiction of a young girl (Linda Blair) who is possessed by an evil spirit. Jason Miller and Max von Sydow are perfectly cast as the priests who risk their sanity and their lives to administer the rites of demonic exorcism, and Ellen Burstyn plays Blair's mother, who can only stand by in horror as her daughter's body is wracked by satanic disfiguration. One of the most frightening films ever made with a soundtrack that's guaranteed to curl your blood, The Exorcist was mysteriously plagued by troubles during production, and the years have not diminished its capacity to disturb even the most stoical viewers. Don't say you weren't warned! --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars it's a crime to miss this movie.......2007-05-13

Warning: Do not watch it if you are under 19. Secondly, do not watch alone or nighttime, or before going to sleep. Very powerful movie that scares to death.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Horror.......2007-04-17

This is simply a wonderful film. Everybody knows about the head-spinning and vomitting, but no-one ever mentions the brilliant direction, fabulous use of sound and stunning imagery, such as in the first 12 minutes of the film.

The next section of the film develops the characters, and until at 75 minutes in the film Mrs MacNeil meets Karras and begs him to see her daughter. This scene ("And, how do you go about getting an exorcism?") is very powerful. Ellen Burstyn is outstanding, and should have won the best actress Oscar in 1973 for this film rather than Glenda Jackson.

Most people will be familiar with the last section of the film and if the effects look a little dated it doesn't detract from the raw power of the film. There are great supporting roles from Max Von Sydow and Lee J Cobb.

The UK film critic Mark Kermode (who is always right!) claims this as the greatest film of all time. Whilst it wouldn't be my choice it is certainly amongst the best I've ever seen and I strongly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Eccccchhorcist!!!!.......2007-02-04

When this movie first premiered at my local hometown theaters, way back when, I recall seeing the massive lines to get in. I stayed away. In the meantime, I began to read articles on how people seeing the movie were becoming possessed themselves, by upset stomachs, fainting, and leaving.
When it came time for me to see the movie on the big screen, I was holding on to my seat with remorseful anticipation during the blank screen pre-movie showing, back in the day when in between movies was not bombarded by ads. I was wrong, and even surprised. As often as this movie has been punned by flicks like Repossessed, and horribly redone by movies like Beyond The Door, this movie almost needed no unduly jabs. You either found it repulsive, scary, or just plain funny. I felt the latter.
Unfortunitely, I was a Monster magazine devout reader, and they pretty much went into many articles concerning how scary movies are made. When I watched this movie, I kept analyzing how it was done, so much so, I forgot the terror I was supposed to feel. I enjoyed it, but its Ellen Burstyn, as the traumatized mother, that makes this movie really click.
She is the springboard for major concern, while the other actors play off of her situation. This movie didn't scare me, but it was well made and I like the original version best. Too much subliminal messages are incorporated in the additional scene footages, and they distract.
Tubular Bells score is simply awesome, even now!

5 out of 5 stars Both Wayne's World movies for the price of one? GAME ON!.......2006-09-26

Well, here it is, kiddies, the Wayne's World epic. The story of Chicago-area rock-loving slackers, the charismatic Wayne Campbell and the geeky Garth Algar, that went from SNL sketch to '90s pop culture staple.

Wayne's World has become a classic in the fourteen years since its release (okay, now I feel old). Who can listen to Bohemian Rhapsody and not think of the opening scene? Who can play street hockey and not say "GAME ON!" when the street is clear? Exactly. The movie also introduced many '90s slang words. Not! Scha-WING! That's what she said! Asphinctersayswhat? She/It will be mine. Oh yes. She/it will be mine. Party on! The movie never takes itself seriously, and is quotable from start to finish (SEEN SAH BEEN DO WAH!!!). This is the Caddyshack of the '90s.

Oh, yeah, and the sequel is very good as well. Christopher Walken shines as the sleazy record producer. "You want me to say what. Like, I don't get it." Not quite as good as the first, but still sweet, right down to the Graduate parody.

Bottom line: both movies are classics. They never take themselves seriously, they're funny as hell, you can quote them from start to finish, and they're both fun rides. For this price, there is no reason not to buy this set. None, whatsoever. Do you hear me? BUY IT. NOW. PARTY ON!

<I>Baywatch</I>, television's most-famous "jiggle series" and by some counts the most-watched show around the world, did more for slow-motion beach joggers than anything since <I>Chariots of Fire</I>--just replace the British Olympic athletes with young women in high-cut red swimsuits who look like <I>Playboy</I> models. The premise of <I>Baywatch</I> is straightforward: a Los Angeles-based team of lifeguards saves swimmers and occasionally fights crime, led by beefcake Mitch Buchannon (David Hasselhoff). And those <I>Playboy</I> models? Erika Eleniak turned a 1989 magazine spread into a role as lifeguard Shauni McClain for two-plus seasons alongside Billy Warlock's Eddie Kramer character (the actors themselves had a brief engagement), and most of the season's action revolved around the lives and loves of Mitch, Shauni, and Eddie. (The most famous <I>Baywatch</I> babe, Pamela Anderson, would arrive the following season.) When they weren't saving people on the beach, they were involved in movie shoots ("Money, Honey"), gang wars ("Point of Attack"), homeless girls ("Sandcastles") and stray pets ("Thin or Die"), a serious charge against Eddie ("The Trophy"), a <I>Gilligan's Island</I> hallucination ("Now, Sit Right Back and You'll Hear a Tale"), and chemical dumping ("The Big Spill"). Hasselhoff's real-life wife, Pamela Bach, appears in a recurring role as reporter Kaye Morgan, Wendie Malick (<I>Just Shoot Me</I>, <I>Dream On</I>) has a small role as Mitch's ex-wife, Gayle, and Tom McTigue plays lifeguard Harvey Miller.

Calling this set "season 1" is a misnomer. It's really the final 20 episodes of the second season (1991-92), which was the first season the series was in syndication after being dropped by NBC. (The first two episodes, the two parts of "Nightmare Bay," were previously released on DVD by another studio and are not included here.) In this season, Jeremy Jackson had replaced Brandon Call as Mitch's son, Hobie, and regular cast members Parker Stevenson (as Mitch's friend, Craig Pomeroy) and Shawn Weatherly (as lifeguard Jill Riley) were gone as well. However, the series pilot of the real season 1, called "Panic at Malibu Pier," is included as a bonus. Also, co-creators and executive producers Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, and Michael Berk discuss their favorite episodes from the second season in a 16-minute segment. Another drawback, however, is that much of the original music has been replaced, including "I'm Always Here," Jimi Jamison's theme song. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-04-10

I watched all 3 seasons and sometimes a little confused. I was really disappointed with them. At the beginning of the season it was almost as if I missed a whole season. There was nothing on Shawnie and Eddie wedding. The begining of the second season I remember Summer and Matt first meeting and that was not on that set. I did enjoy watching the episodes that I haven't seen in awhile because I am a big baywatch fan.

4 out of 5 stars Really Season 2, but so what!.......2007-03-11

Having loved this show, & having read Greg J. Bohannon's (one of the creators of the show) book about his memories of the show, it is easy to see why the NBC episodes are being tossed around, In 1989, NBC ran this show for one season, but then cancelled it, creators Bohannon, Micheal Berk & Douglas Swartz bought back the rights to air & produce it elsewhere, & along with Hasselhoff were able to make it their own, & get it picked up by an independent network, according to Bohannon, NBC just didn't get it, this season 1 is, as many have pointed out, season 2, but to Bohannon, Berk, & Swartz, it is their season 1, & it is so nice to see this show again, back when these aired, I missed quite a bit of episodes, it is so cool to now see them in order, yes the theme song is changed, like many have pointed out, the original theme song was better, & Hasselhoff tried to buy the rights to it, but was unsuccessful, you have all the illegal song downloaders to thank for that, I am amazed Universal got all the original songs for "Miami Vice", because record labels are playing hardball when it comes to DVD, that is why it took so long for this show as well as shows like "Beverly Hills 90210", "Melrose Place" as well as "Vice" to make their way to DVD, only Universal has been successful at securing the rights to the songs on "Vice", mainly because Universal is part of Universal Music Group, sadly "Baywatch" was not produced by a studio like Universal, despite this, this is a good show, the songs may be missing, but the show's magic is still intact, & with a total of ten seasons, the NBC episodes will likely be completed with each season, I like many reviewers here, I am not happy about it, but you have to look at it from the show's creator's point of view, NBC killed their show & told them more or less that it sucked & I am sure there is some bitterness there, if put in their shoes, any of us would most likely do it this way as well, but like one reviewer pointed out, that is one less season to buy!!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed........2007-02-05

Buyers, take heed. The series has been altered.
The series is indeed Baywatch, but they have taken out the opening song, "I'm Always Here." and closing song "Current of Love" both which were sung by David Hasselhoff.
I was looking forward to seeing this series again. But am disappointed that the music was tampered with. It's like taking the opening music out of the series CHiPs, or any other series that has it's signature opening.
And, as stated by other people, the seasons are being released out of order. And there are episodes missing.
If you want the series Baywatch, just to have it. Then get these. However, if you want the series in it's entirety, music included, then I would wait until they release the series correctly.
They need to go back to the drawing board on this one. :(

3 out of 5 stars Missing Episodes????.......2007-01-14

Okay - did anybody actually buy this thing & keep it? Because I got it & Season 2 & by the looks of it Eddie & Shauni's wedding is on NEITHER of them!!!! Same with that storm drain episode where Hobie (Jeremy Jackson) pulls that prank & Mitch yells at him for it later on. They showed clips of all this in the episode where Mitch almost dies because he free-style dived too deep - but I haven't seen them & Eddie & Shauni aren't in Season '2' so how the Heck am I to see their wedding!?!?!?!?! Or is their wedding in the REAL Season 1??? And has anybody else's DVDs skipped like a VHS tape would when the tracking is off??? Please Help!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Baywatch Season 1.......2007-01-10

If this was the correct seasons one this would of got a 5 star review. This is actually season two and season two is actually season three as "Summer" never joined Baywatch till season three. Also season one has "Jill" character as well as "Craig" Parker Stevenson and the famous shark episode where one lifeguard gets attack.
I enjoyed the dvd however as the first three seasons were my favourite, would of liked season one to be the original though. Good to see Australia companies got it right. I've already pre-booked my order for the complete "original" season one.

This season marked the debut of the quintessential <I>Baywatch</I> babe Pamela Anderson as C.J. Parker. Also debuting were Nicole Eggert as Roberta "Summer" Quinn, and Alexandra Paul as Mitch's old flame, Lt. Stephanie Holden. Future <I>Showgirls</I> star Elizabeth Berkley and surf champion Kelly Slater appear in a short-lived love triangle with Summer, Gregory Alan Williams continues to make appearances as Sergeant Garner Ellerbee, and David Charvet plays newcomer lifeguard Matt Brody. Throughout the season, Mitch and Stephanie dance around rekindling their relationship (but the attempt to use Mitch to evoke Bogie in <I>Casablanca</I> is just silly). Other events and encounters of the season include pirates ("Masquerade"), a basketball slaying ("Lifeguards Can't Jump"), a diamond smuggler ("Strangers Among Us"), a cruise hijacking ("Vacation"), an escaped convict ("The Tower"), a devastating injury to a key crew member ("Shattered"), and an Australian crew member (Trevor Goddard) in the season finale ("Fatal Exchange").

Just as with the previous set, calling this set "season 2" is a misnomer. It's really the final 20 episodes of the third season (1992-93), which was the second season the series had been in syndication. Noticeably absent are the first two episodes, the two parts of "River of No Return," which were previously released on DVD by another studio and are not included here. That's significant because those episodes marked the departure of former regulars Erika Eleniak and Billy Warlock, as well as the series debuts of Pamela Anderson and Nicole Eggert. However, the second and third episodes of the real season 1, "In Deep" and "Heat Wave," are included as bonuses. Also, co-creators and executive producers Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, and Michael Berk discuss the creation of the show and its move from NBC to syndication in a 13-minute segment. Another drawback, however, is that much of the original music has been replaced, including "I'm Always Here," Jimi Jamison's theme song. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

4 out of 5 stars The little things matter a lot.......2007-06-19

When I first popped disc one of season two into my dvd player, (I skipped season 1 because I never started watching the show reruns untill the mid 90's.)
I was confused by the theme song and credits music. I remember lazy summer afternoons when I was a teen lazing around the house in little denim shorts and bare feet and Baywatch would come on and I'd turn off my brain and enjoy it while sucking on one of those ice pops. For some reason,.. the theme music and music playing in the credits was really fitting for the show and had a good "summer on the beach" feel to it. It was almost comforting,.. and it stuck with me. (even though I hate music by Hasselhoff)

So it totally sucks that we will never have Baywatch exactly the way we saw it back in the 90's. Otherwise, the show is just as I remember it and I love the nostalgia. But that new theme music, man that sucks. Makes it so much harder to travel back in time to my happy teens when things aren't the same.

But,.. the theme song isn't the main part of the show,.. so I'm not going to rate it bad just for that.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing picture quality.......2007-04-21

The picture quality is worse than that of the reruns on TV [Analog Cable, "Low" definition]. The fact that the show is from the 90's isn't an excuse - I've bought DVDs of show from the 60's [some of them "colorized" B&W], and they look much better. I agree with all the criticisms about the theme - even if they couldn't get the rights to the original theme, they still could have found something much better.
Hopefully when they release the other seasons they'll do a much better job.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome TV Show, DVD releases could be better!.......2007-04-16

I think Baywatch is one of these shows that got so popular in the 90s that almost every person has already seen at least one episode of it. The good thing is the first seasons of the show are really gr8 and it's really nice to have the opportunity to see them again. I was so pleased to have them released on DVD but... yep, there's a Big But! The bad thing is how the DVD sets have been released. First of all, season #s have been changed. Season 1 on DVD is actually season 2 and season 2, 3 and so on. That doesn't make any sense but let's say I can still deal w/ that now I know. However, when I realized that the opening song was not the same, I got really disappointed. I mean, come on, how's that possible? That song was one very big part of the show! It was part of its success all the way. Another thing that ticks me off is that it seems only us, US people, got s*****d! German releases are just like aired! Yes they are! Opening theme, nothing's missing... So, here's my final say: if you don't really care about those little things, you can buy the US releases, but if you are a big fan, I do suggest you get the German releases (they have English, so no worries). You might also need a Region 2 DVD player. DVD sets are a little more expensive but better to my opinion and 7 seasons have been released so far! Isn't it amazing?

2 out of 5 stars A disappointment if the little things matter.......2006-11-21

I bought this season (which really should be season 3) of Baywatch episodes because I am a die hard fan of the show. However, this set of DVD's was very misleading and poorly made. If the show started in 1989, then this set is Season 3 not Season 2. The very first 2 episodes of this season which weren't on the DVDs should have been included. It was the episode where Mitch and Hobie got up to the river to go white water rafting gold country and Shauni gets kidnapped by some gold theives. Plus Eddie and Shauni get married at the very end of the 2nd episode. Very disappointing! The theme song, "I'm Always here" performed by Jim Jamison is not the title theme getting replaced by something very cheesy that doesn't even fit the show. None of the music video songs are the same because I remember every episode from that season like it was yesterday. I will buy the other boxed sets, but the only reason why is because Baywatch was my favorite television show. If First look entertainment is going to make more boxed sets, please bring the old theme song back and place some of the missing episodes on future discs or you will have more disappointed customers. I only gave this set 2 stars because it was my favorite show at the time.

3 out of 5 stars its not the same but it is.......2006-11-07

the seasons are out by 1 the 1st 2 episodes are missing and the original music has been replaced. and is total off the action of the credits.
But the video and audio is good, pitty you have to wait and buy all of the 10 syndicated seasons to get the full network one, and how long until the 1st 2 episodes from pack 1 and 2 and by the looks 3,4,5 are released, or are they just going to be released as movies

TV's Saturday Night Live has been like the evil twin of the legendary alchemist's stone, which supposedly could turn lead into gold. SNL usually does the opposite, taking rich comic premises from short skits and extrapolating them into overblown and unfunny full-length films. ("The Coneheads"? Puh-leeze!) But this film proved to be the exception, thanks to Mike Myers's wonderfully rude lowbrow humor and his full-bodied understanding of who his character is. Wayne Campbell (Myers) and his nerdy pal Garth (Dana Carvey) are teens who live at home and have their own low-rent cable-access show in Aurora, Illinios, in which they celebrate their favorite female movie stars and heavy-metal bands. When a Chicago TV station smells a potential youth-audience ratings hit, the station's weasely executive (Rob Lowe) tries to coopt the show--and steal Wayne's new rock & roll girlfriend (Tia Carrere) at the same time. It's filled with all kinds of knowing spoofs of movie conventions, from Wayne talking to the camera (and forbidding other characters to do so) to hilariously self-conscious product placements and labeling a moment a "Gratuitous Sex Scene." Dumb--and very funny. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>
