Doris Day, the perky, chaste adult star of an odd collection of winking 1960s sex comedies, takes the Irene Dunne role in this remake of the comedy classic <I>My Favorite Wife</I>. As the survivor of a five-year ordeal on a desert island, she returns home the very day her husband has remarried. James Garner, trading his <I>Maverick</I> impish humor and con man cool for a mugging performance of double takes and pratfalls, is her overjoyed husband who is too cowardly to tell his neurotic bride (Polly Bergen). All of this, naturally, leads to a ridiculously complicated plot that combines door-slamming sex farce with mistaken identities (Day poses as a Swedish masseuse) and a goofy sped-up car chase. Chuck Connors, who costars as Day's hunky, he-man island mate "Adam," leads a topnotch supporting cast that includes sassy Thelma Ritter as Garner's no-nonsense mother, Don Knotts as a nervous shoe salesman enlisted by Day to impersonate Adam, Fred Clark at his indignant best, and John Astin and Pat Harrington in early roles. Edgar Buchanan practically steals the film as a gruff, irascible judge who growls through the legal circus that forms the film's chaotic climax. The cast for the most part rises above the tepid script and bland direction and Day sings two songs. James Garner substitutes for Rock Hudson in this hilarious Doris Day outing. Housewife Beverly Boyer (Day) happens by chance to give an executive of Happy Soap an honest appraisal of one of his company's products. Charmed by her forthright and honest manner, he makes Beverly the company spokesperson. When she becomes an advertising sensation, her husband (Garner) has to deal with the social ramifications of his wife making more money than he does. Day and Garner are both in good form, and Garner nicely portrays the mounting frustration of bewildered husband Gerald.
Gerald's refusal to accept that Beverly's new career infringes on her duties as housewife is, of course, outdated thinking today. Nevertheless, the film works and is sincerely funny. No wonder: comedian Carl Reiner cowrote the script. <I>--Mark Savary</I>

I love this movie! Have seen it before, but it is a classic Doris Day movie!
Excellent movie, but some of these other reviews are idiotic........2007-06-02
and I quote: "I can't believe that there was ever a time when women were expected to be housewives{sic} and not work!" This has to be one of the most asinine comments I have heard in a while. I myself can't believe there was a time when the housewife stayed home & actually watched her own children. (Instead of leaving them be to experiment with drug use, pre-marital sex or joining a street gang.) Not to mention, a household could get by on one salary in those days, which also led to less marital discourse, & the actual existence of a home life. I also can't believe there was a time when the divorce rate in America was below a whopping 50%.
Which I guess leads to another asinine comment: "Gerald's refusal to accept that Beverly's new career infringes on her duties as housewife is, of course, outdated thinking today." I guess the concept of a housewife is "outdated thinking." What is modern thinking? Work, work, work, while my marriage falls apart and there is no one to take care of the home or offspring. I would take the lifestyle of 50 years ago anytime, the way this disgusting world is today.

This is a great family movie. The kids are so adorable. This was one of my favorite movies as a child and my children are grown and it is still one of their favorite movies too.
Doris Day at her Best!!!.......2007-04-05
I can't believe that there was ever a time when women were expected to be housewives and not work! And furthermore this movie purports that women can't have it all, that the husband and children come first. However, the charm of this movie is the chemistry between Doris Day and James Garner and their comedic antics. I laughed myself silly throughout the movie. If laughter is what you're after, this is the perfect vehicle.

Doris Day fans will be dizzy with pleasure over <I>The Doris Day Collection, Volume 2</I>. This package of six Warner Bros. films covers the early phase of Day's movie career, including her debut picture, and is actually better and more of-a-piece than Warners' previous Day set. The box doesn't include anything from the later Rock Hudson stage of her career: This is the former Doris von Kappelhoff in full youthful sparkle, with her tomboyish attitude and freckled perkiness (and skillful singing, which is showcased in each film).
Her 1948 debut, <I>Romance on the High Seas</I>, actually presents Day in a different light from her subsequent well-scrubbed image. (Maybe this is what co-star Oscar Levant meant when he later quipped, "I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin.") She's a sassy, hep-talking band singer, drawn into an unlikely (and extremely silly) plot involving confused identity during a South American cruise. Michael Curtiz might not be a comedy director, but the script is fun and there's no mistaking the spectacle of a star being born.
The follow-up, <I>My Dream Is Yours</I>, returns Curtiz and leading man Jack Carson in a tale that has some parallels to Day's real life: she's a singer with a young child, looking for her breakthrough. The movie's a serviceable but humdrum backstage story with great vintage locations, and Bugs Bunny appears in a surreal dream sequence. The Technicolor shines here, as it does through much of the set; the only black-and-white film is <I>I'll See You in My Dreams</I>, an enjoyably low-key biopic of lyricist Gus Kahn (Danny Thomas), who wrote so many of the signature tunes of the 1920s. A great score ("Makin' Whoopee," "It Had to Be You") help this one past the conventions of the composer biopic; Doris plays Kahn's alpha-female wife.
Day's rising popularity was confirmed with the success of <I>On Moonlight Bay</I> and <I>By the Light of the Silvery Moon</I>, a pair of old-timey musicals based on Booth Tarkington's "Penrod" stories. Nostalgia for the WWI era runs high in these sugary confections, with Doris paired with Gordon MacRae and a batch of vintage tunes. The strong ensemble and the backlot re-creation of a bygone era are almost impossible to resist.
By her own account, Day was exhausted by her Warners contract at the time of <I>Lucky Me</I>, the latest film (1955) in this set. The lame showbiz story indicates as much, with Doris stranded in Miami and coming to the attention of composer Bob Cummings. The widescreen CinemaScope process gives some oomph to the musical numbers, and if Day herself was exhausted it doesn't show; America's sweetheart never failed to turn on the high beams, and it's easy to see why the moviegoing public needed her to twinkle. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

After her long and wholesome run as America's Sweetheart, Doris Day quit movies with this well-scrubbed picture. <I>With Six You Get Eggroll</I>--oof, what a title--caught the wave of blended-family comedies, coming just after <I>Yours, Mine and Ours</I> and just before TV's <I>The Brady Bunch</I>. Doris has three sons, and new beau Brian Keith has an 18-year-old daughter (the still-baby-faced Barbara Hershey). It's family-friendly sitcom stuff, with both Day and Keith doing their comfortable, patented thing; when the two of them are onscreen together it's like watching a couple of old sweaters mate. This one is straight formula for fans only, although connoisseurs of camp will enjoy the whiff of Aquarius in the otherwise square proceedings (it was 1968, after all) when Doris goes to a nightclub where the Grass Roots are playing. There's also a hippie gang (featuring Jamie Farr and William Christopher, before <I>M*A*S*H</I>) with ponchos and love beads. This 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can outshoot and outsing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane's secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honor, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not. This won an Oscar for Best Song--"Secret Love," by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. <I>--Rochelle O'Gorman</I>
