"Now you see it. You're amazed. You can't believe it. Your eyes open wider. It's horrible, but you can't look away. There's no chance for you. No escape. You're helpless, helpless. There's just one chance, if you can scream. Throw your arms across your eyes and scream, scream for your life!" And scream Fay Wray does most famously in this monster classic, one of the greatest adventure films of all time, which even in an era of computer-generated wizardry remains a marvel of stop-motion animation. Robert Armstrong stars as famed adventurer Carl Denham, who is leading a "crazy voyage" to a mysterious, uncharted island to photograph "something monstrous ... neither beast nor man." Also aboard is waif Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) and Bruce Cabot as big lug John Driscoll, the ship's first mate. <I>King Kong</I>'s first half-hour is steady going, with engagingly corny dialogue ("Some big, hard-boiled egg gets a look at a pretty face and bang, he cracks up and goes sappy") and ominous portent that sets the stage for the horror to come. Once our heroes reach Skull Island, the movie comes to roaring, chest-thumping, T. rex-slamming, snake-throttling, pterodactyl-tearing, native-stomping life. King Kong was ranked by the American Film Institute as among the 50 best films of the 20th century. Kong making his last stand atop the Empire State Building is one of the movies' most indelible and iconic images. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>
<b>DVD features</b>
Not surprisingly, the eighth wonder of the world's DVD treatment is nothing short of spectacular. The newly restored, digitally mastered print of the 1933 version of King Kong is sharp, well balanced, and given that this film is seventy years old, has very few scratches or blemishes. The restoration is nothing short of amazing. What may frustrate some is the audio. Though crystal clear, it is still in 2.0 Mono. The soundtrack on Kong is such an integral part of the film you really wished they could have pulled it out to at least 2.0 Surround; but this is a minor criticism. The bulk of the commentary track is by visual effects veterans Ray Harryhausen and Ken Ralston joyfully discussing the special effects of the film and discussing why King Kong is such a favorite and important film to the community of visual effects artists. Spliced between their commentaries are colorful and humorous anecdotes from director from Merian C. Cooper and Fay Wray. The two documentaries on disc two run over three and half hours long. <I>I Am Kong! The Exploits of Merian C. Cooper</I> is an engaging documentary on the renegade, Hemingway-like director. It is fascinating to learn that Cooper was every bit the adventurer that the fictional director Carl Denham in <I>King Kong was in the film. RKO Production 601: The Making of Kong, Eighth Wonder of the World is a two and a half hour documentary broken into 7 parts: "The Origins of King Kong," "Willis O'Brien and Creation," "Cameras Roll on Kong," "The Eighth Wonder," "A Milestone in Visual Effects," "Passion, Sound and Fury," "The Mystery of the Lost Spider Pit Sequence," and "King Kong's Legacy." Also included is complete footage of the legendary "The Lost Spider Pit Sequence." Presenting the segments are various film historians and filmmakers including Rudy Behlmer, Cooper biographer Mark Cotta Vaz, the Chiodo Brothers (of Team America: World Police special effects fame), and directors John Landis and Peter Jackson. Here you will learn everything you would ever want to know about the making and importance of King Kong, including that the producer/director team of Cooper and Schoedsack played the pilots who shoot Kong off the Empire State Building. The highly anticipated, long-awaited release of <I>King Kong will meet most viewers' expectations, and exceed everyone's else. --Rob Bracco
Description
Seeking a backer for his movie, Merian C. Cooper approached a top Hollywood mogul. "You know what a 50-foot gorilla would see in a five-foot girl?" the mogul asked. "His breakfast!" The studio chief wasn't buying but the public was. King Kong saved RKO from bankruptcy and became an all-time classic, ranking 43rd on the American Film Institute's list of Top-100 American Movies. King Kong teems with memorable moments: a moviemaking expedition on a fantastic isle filled with dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures; the giant simian's lovestruck obsession with the film shoot's blonde starlet (scream queen Fay Wray); Kong's capture; his Manhattan rampage; and the fateful finale atop the Empire State Building, where Kong cradles his palm-sized beloved and swats at machine-gunning airplanes. "It was beauty killed the beast." But in these and other great scenes, Kong lives forever.
Customer Reviews:
King Kong (1933).......2007-01-04
I now have all three versions of this story. I prefer the 1933 original
version. The last release was OK, but I felt overwelmed by the CGI stuff.
The 1976 version just did not produce. The original, projected the terror
and the love intrest of Kong.

IT WAS BEAUTY THAT KILLED THE BEAST..........2006-05-29
As a young child in the nineteen fifties, I used to watch this film whenever it appeared on TV on "Million Dollar Movie". I loved it then. I love it now. Time has not diminished the capacity of this film to mesmerize and hold the viewer in its thrall.
The story line is basic. Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong), a filmmaker and entrepreneur, leads an expedition to Skull Island where he discovers its deep, dark secret. It is a land where time has stood still, and prehistoric monsters still hold sway over the island and its inhabitants. There, the natives pay homage to the one whom they revere as "Kong", and who is, indeed, king of the island.
Denham, together with his beautiful, budding starlet, Ann Darrow (Fay Wray), as well as with the crew of the ship that brought him to Skull Island, investigates the strange ritual being performed on the island by its native population. Before she knows it, Ann finds herself captured by the natives. She is to become the bride of the mysterious "Kong".
When Ann discovers who the mysterious "Kong" is, she starts screaming and doesn't stop. The ship's first mate, Jack Driscoll (Bruce Cabot), who happens to be in love with Ann, manages to rescue her from the clutches of "Kong". Notwithstanding the fact that "Kong" has taken a shine to her, Ann is relieved to have been rescued by the man whom she loves.
Denham then arranges to capture the creature, whom he calls "King Kong" and takes him back to New York with them on the ship that brought them to Skull Island. There, King Kong makes his debut, one that movie lovers will long remember.
The special effects of this film were superlative for its time and still pass muster today. The relationship between the beauty and the beast still makes the viewer sit up and take notice. This is an attention grabbing film that is as exciting today, as when it was first released over seventy years ago. It is a truly timeless, cinema classic. Bravo!
The only one to see.......2006-04-27
While the 2005 version is a techno dream, this is the only version really worth watching or having. Never equaled.

The Duke Did It First!..........2005-11-19
"Shadow Of The Eagle"(1932)
Okay, we all love the scene in "North By Northwest" in which Cary Grant is being chased across a field by the crop duster plane. It is a nail biting, edge of your seat scene, and we want to yell, "Look out Cary, it's coming back at you!" I would never take anything away from that class act, but fans of The Duke, may remember that he did it first about 27 years earlier, in this wonderful mystery/serial. And not only was he being chased by a stunt plane, but was carrying an injured woman in his strong arms at the same time!!! That's our guy, even early on, quite the hero.
"Shadow of the Eagle" is a real treat for John Wayne fans. It's runs about 3 hours, and the action and adventure, the mystery and suspense is non stop. Wayne plays Craig McCoy, a stunt pilot and is part of a traveling fair. When a mysterious pilot known as The Eagle", starts making murderous threats with sky-writing, our guy jumps into action to try and find this villain. Suspect everyone, suspect no one, as for 3 hours, the upper hand and evidence jumps back and forth between the bad guys and the good guys. Keep in mind this was an originally a 12 chapter serial, so each chapter may be considered a kind of cliff hanger.
What is most fun about the story is that all the performers of the traveling fair get involved in one way or another. Some are prime suspects(for a while), others, like the strong man, and the ventriloquist use their talents to help catch the criminal.
This film can be found on a DVD released by Platinum Disc(who do all those fun Great American Westerns). Although it starts out a little scratchy, I was very surprised by the quality of both the sound and the picture. It didn't get a total restoration, but a very decent view, and the film plays completely through with no breaks between the chapters. There are 3 other films of Wayne's included on this DVD. "Rainbow Valley", "His Private Secretary", and "Paradise Canyon", all from the 30's, and they do show their age). The DVD is simply called John Wayne" Enter B0001I2C4I into the DVD search and it will take you there, if you are interested in it. It is also part of a 2 pack John Wayne collection(9 films in total)Enter B0001OGVBM. So lots of choices here.
Witness the early beginnings of a legend in action...and enjoy!....Laurie
okay, but not as good as Marengo Films previous version.......2005-08-25
Marengo Films decided to add back in the chapter stops to this latest version of 'Shadow Of The Eagle', and honestly, I have no idea why. What was a unique move on their part by eliminating the repetitive summaries between each chapter, is now back again...adding an unnecessary 40 minutes more to the viewing time. I'm glad I still have the original version they put out, as this version is just like every other one out there on the market. It's a shame they never put out 'The Hurricane Express' and 'The Three Musketeers' serials without the summary chapters as well. The first version of Marengo Films 'Eagle' is the one that really soars!
THE NEW IMPROVED PRISTINE VERSION HAS ARRIVED.......2004-12-25
MARENGO FILMS IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE NEW VERSION OF THE SHADOW OF THE EAGLE IS AVAILABLE NOW. THE COMPANY RE-MASTERED THE FILM INTO CHAPTER FORMAT IN ADDITION THEY DID ANOTHER SOUND DESIGN, COLOR CORRECTIONS AND NEW CHAPTER CARDS. THIS DVD IS NOW THE BEST VERSION OF THIS SERIAL ON THE MARKET.
A classic John Wayne.......2003-06-22
It is great to see John Wayne in the early years . It was both funny and action packed and comsidering it was 70 years ago it was of a great quality .

Wayne even went so far as to name his son Ethan after that character...The inscription on the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to him in 1979 reads, simply, "John Wayne, American."...After meeting the late Superman star Christopher Reeve at the 1979 Academy Awards, Wayne turned to Cary Grant and said "This is our new man. He's taking over."...Turned down the role of Marshal Dillon on "Gunsmoke" (1955) because he did not want to commit to a weekly TV series. He recommended his friend James Arness for the role, and gave the on camera introduction in the pilot episode...I would like to be remembered, well...the Mexicans have a phrase, 'Feo fuerte y formal'. Better than I expected........2006-08-10
A pretty good western I ended up watching again and again.George Chesebro, usually seen in lesser roles as a bad guy, steals the show here in a most heroic way and even tugs at the ol' heartstrings. Another big plus was the casting of a number of Arapaho Indian survivors of the actual Little Bighorn battle. That moved "Custer's Last Stand" w-a-a-y up on my list of must-have serials.
as history forget it,as family fun and adventure saddle up and ride with this one!.......2006-06-15
i love these old cliffhangers and i show them to my boys all the time. they love all the fast paced action and my wife and i love the fact taht we don't have to worry about bad words or any other problems with newer movies! we watched this one over the weekend and all i have heard all week is if we can watch it again. great family fun and a great way to spur(get it "spur",ok it's corny like the movie but i had to say it)your kids to read more about the history of thr period!

CLASSIC MASCOT SERIAL-ALPHA DVD........2007-06-02
...confusing, jarring, mind-numbing, yes it's a Mascot serial and one of their best!
Filmed in 1930 & released the following year this creaky early sound serial has a super realistic look and feel to it, almost as though someone captured actual events with a home movie camera. However, the events captured are anything but realistic and border on fantasy or make-believe. It's kind of like watching one of your dreams up on a motion picture screen. Characters and events come and go and return again in a dream-like state. For instance, the hero Jim Lester (Tom Tyler) is ambushed by a couple of thugs in Chapter 1. He has a big fight with one of them (Joe Bonomo), capturing this thug and turning him over to the sheriff. Forced to expose The Phantom's secret identity, Bonomo is shot and killed before he can talk. However in the very next chapter Bonomo is seen standing in the bar and gets in a fight with a drunk and continues appearing in the remaining chapters though he's already been killed off...and they don't even have him change shirts or put on a moustache. He's just there: same guy...like in a dream. And this kind of stuff goes on with the other characters as well, such as when the real Phantom is finally exposed we all know he cannot possibly be the villain because he was with others when The Phantom struck before!...only in a dream.
Now I'm not being critical here, I love this crazy movie. It was Mascot's first Secret/Phantom/Villain serial in which everyone in the cast is a suspect and/or in which Secret/Mysterious/Night riders also appear. Others to follow: THE VANISHING LEGION(1931), THE LIGHTNING WARRIOR(1931), FIGHTING WITH KIT CARSON(1933), MYSTERY MOUNTAIN(1934) and Gene Autry's THE PHANTOM EMPIRE(1935).
This is a fun serial and should be taken as such. It's great getting a look at the 1930 American landscape, a dream world in itself! As most of these Poverty Row serials could not afford to shoot on expensive sound stages they filmed mostly on actual (cheaper) locations, and so the result is a satisfying glimpse of a by-gone era.
The Alpha dvd is simply the best out there.
Another reviewer "Mr. Jim" is reviewing the VCI videotape.
I have both the VCI videotape and the ALPHA dvd and viewed them together. They both appear to be from the exact same film source, the same scratches, wash-outs, frame jumps etc...However, the overall quality is excellent! For the most part the image is clear and sharp and the sound quite acceptible. Remember, this is an early (1930) low budget serial. I am amazed PHANTOM OF THE WEST looks so good!
If you're just starting out with serials and want to see what they're all about go with the Republic's late 1930's-early 1940's crop: DICK TRACY(1937), DAREDEVILS OF THE RED CIRCLE(1939), MYSTERIOUS DR. SATAN(1940), SPY SMASHER(1942), there are lots to choose from. But if you want a good example of the roots of the sound serial then PHANTOM OF THE WEST(1930/31) is a great place to start.
Super Highly Recommended.

A sensation when it was released in 1968, this John Cassavetes film earned Oscar nominations for actors Seymour Cassel and Lynn Carlin. Improvised and shot in an edgy, hand-held fashion, the film examines the disintegration of the marriage of a couple in mid-life doldrums. Each seeks solace elsewhere: husband John Marley with prostitute Gena Rowlands, wife Carlin with a free spirit played by Cassel. But neither finds anything approaching the fulfillment they feel is missing from the marriage. Indeed, in Cassavetes's probe of raw emotions, these people discover that, just maybe, the problem lies not with their spouse but with themselves. You need to be a fan of Cassavetes's loose, actor-friendly style to appreciate this intriguing but sometimes rambling drama. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

Can't Face It.......2006-07-08
I had heard about the independent films of actor/director John Cassavetes when I was a teenager. I remember his acting in "The Dirty Dozen" and various other movies but I don't think I had the chance to see his work as a director until I watched "Faces" last night. After a sceptical start, I came away impressed with this movie.
"Faces" as I saw it, is a movie about the emptiness of life in some people. The film opens with a very particular movie producer going in for a screening of a new film. Afterwards, I came to understand that Cassavetes was "putting on" the film industry by suggesting that they were the very people he was trying to portray in "Faces". The first half hour or so of the movie I found to be rather awkward and difficult to follow. We see three inebriated people joking around. I guess I felt it was a pointless look at pointless lives. I thought the movie picked up when some wives went out on the town. They were looking for a good time although they didn't seem to have a common definition of what that would be. They stumble across a good-looking young guy who is full of fun and energy and they take him home. Despite the general drunkeness of the parties involved, the young guy, named Chet, manages to reach out to each of the four ladies and try to turn them on to his upbeat look on life. Each of them gets drawn in initially and then rebels their way back into their own deadend outlook on life; the last one in a most extreme way. Chet, the little blue bird of happiness, seems to be a contrast to the depressing reality everyone else finds themselves comfortable in. A switch to a different scene with John Marley and Gena Rowlands weakened the flow of the movie but served to give us a message that happiness is always temporary in an unhappy mind. The movie ends with two of the main characters drifting back into the boredom they have accustomed themselves to.
There were a lot of innovative angles to "Faces" that film junkies might enjoy. The wandering hand-held camera (held steadier than mine) gives an intimate sense of being a part of the party. The title, I thought, came from the near-constant close-ups of all of the characters involved. Some of the acting, particularly that of Lynn Carlin and Seymour Cassel, is very good. I mentioned that the beginning was a bit tedious. I was wondering if it was going to be worth the "effort" to watch the whole movie. However, the second half left me impressed with a look at a world where the only enjoyment seems to come out of a bottle. Heaven forbid we should have to deal with one another face to face. I did not enjoy the life "Faces" showed me but I certainly came away enjoying the life I live.
Very good, a bit inaccessible.......2005-10-21
John Cassavetes is certainly an interesting director (great actor too, but interesting director). Instead of directing films for entertainment, he directs them to present a "slice-of-life", so to speak, only one that is usually tumultuous and unkind. His movies are generally uphill battles to watch, but they're worth it.
In this film, an over-the-hill man and woman break up and persue other, younger paramours. While successful, they still have to deal with their own separate pain and fear of many things, amongst them age, loneliness, and friendship.
The writing and the acting are the most important parts. The writing is at times brilliant, the rest of the time brutal. Cassavetes tries for a more realistic, human approach, which means characters go off in tangents, talk unproductively, and are often really mean to each other. The acting complements the dialog so perfectly that one doesn't see actors on screen, but characters; only moreso than characters, one sees people, as if watching a home video with a disturbing and powerful plot.
Cassavetes was also one to specifically not care about structure. This makes the directing, editing, and cinematography rather jarring and condense. Luckily, it works with the themes of this movie well enough that the movie itself maintains a sense of entrapment and abuse.
It's a great film, though it's an uphill battle to watch. It's amazingly written but it's very inaccessible. I'd recommend it, but you must heed that it won't be something you can just sit down and escape into.

LOVE is a word that describes my affection to this wonderful film about PEOPLE being PEOPLE, John Cassevettes is my favorite writer, the most original lines i've ever heard, hilarious film that I can't wait to purchase and show the world, Come home girl, come home.
fascinating film, but look for the criterion edition.......2005-06-06
This is John Cassavettes' first film, that developed out of an improvisational acting workshop. For sheer power and authenticity (which are different from "realism") there is nothing like Cassavettes' non-studio films. Essential viewing for those who are interested in American cinema, especially the rise of auteur-based work that began in the '70s and continues (at least ostensibly, with a few films here and there) in the independent film scene today.
One note on this edition: there is a finer edition of this film available through the Criterion Collection, but you can't buy it "a la carte." You need to get it with the John Cassavettes collection, that includes this along with Shadows, Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Opening Night, and A Woman Under the Influence, and a solid (even if it could use some trimming and doesn't really work as a feature film in its own right) documentary on Cassavettes. The criterion version of Faces, along with a better transfer, also includes an alternate opening of this film (which was substantially altered after its initial release).
This is not a bad one to own as it stands. But if you really become captivated by this or have already become captivated by one of Cassavettes' other films, you'll be kicking yourself for buying this one and will really want to buy the bigger collection. (I know I was kicking myself until I broke down and bought the whole collection).

Special footnote, actor John Wayne once said, "Every country in the world loved the folklore of the West - the music, the dress, the excitement, everything that was associated with the opening of a new territory. It took everybody out of their own little world - The cowboy lasted a hundred years, created more songs and prose and poetry than any other folk figure - The closest thing was the Japanese samurai. Now, I wonder who'll continue it...His performance as Ethan Edwards in "The Searchers" (1956) is ranked #23 on Premiere Magazine's 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time...Of his many film roles, his personal favorite was that of Ethan Edwards from The Searchers (1956). Which means; he was ugly, strong and had dignity."
